BACKGROUND: This study aims to analyze the longitudinal variation of occlusal force distribution prior to and after fixed restoration for molar full-crowns with T-SCAN III which provide reference for occlusal adjustment and long-term maintenance. METHODS: We enrolled a total of 20 patients who received conventional restorative treatment for molars. The occlusion examination was conducted in 3 stages (before placement, immediately after placement, and 3 months after placement) using T-SCAN III (Tekscan South Boston, MA, USA, 10.0) to examine and measure the occlusal contact areas of the full dentition. RESULTS: The results indicated that the occlusal force distribution in the molar region of the patients changed before and after the fixed restoration, but the percentages of occlusal force in the dental arch of the molar did not differ significantly before and after the restoration (P > 0.05). Three months after the fixed restoration, the percentage of occlusal force in the restored dental arches of lateral teeth increased significantly (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicated that the occlusal forces of the patients changed with tooth movement and adaptation, which is mainly reflected in the increasing occlusal force. Quantitative occlusal force analysis using T-SCAN III occlusal analyzer can provide more objective and accurate data to effectively guide clinical occlusion adjustments.

RESUMEN

Sirtuins, also called silent information regulator 2, are enzymes that rely on nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to function as histone deacetylases. Further investigation is warranted to explore the advantageous impacts of Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a constituent of the sirtuin group, on lipid metabolism, in addition to its well-researched involvement in extending lifespan. The regulation of gene expression has been extensively linked to SIRT1. Sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP) is a substrate of SIRT1 that has attracted significant interest due to its role in multiple cellular processes including cell cycle regulation, DNA damage repair, and metabolic functions. Hence, the objective of this analysis was to investigate and elucidate the correlation between SIRT1 and SREBPs, as well as assess the contribution of SIRT1/SREBPs in mitigating lipid metabolism dysfunction. The objective of this research was to investigate whether SIRT1 and SREBPs could be utilized as viable targets for therapeutic intervention in managing complications associated with diabetes.

Prophages, which enables bacterial hosts to acquire novel traits, and increase genetic variation and evolutionary innovation, are considered to be one of the greatest drivers of bacterial diversity and evolution. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is widely distributed and one of the most important multidrug resistant bacteria in hospitals. However, the distribution and genetic diversity of S. maltophilia prophages have not been elucidated. In this study, putative prophages were predicted in S. maltophilia genomes by using virus prediction tools, and the genetic diversity and phylogeny of S. maltophilia and the prophages they harbor were further analyzed. A total of 356 prophage regions were predicted from 88 S. maltophilia genomes. Among them, 144 were intact prophages, but 77.09% of the intact prophages did not match any known phage sequences in the public database. The number of prophage carried by S. maltophilia is related to its host habitat and is an important factor affecting the size of the host genome, but it is not related to the genetic diversity of the prophage. The prediction of auxiliary genes encoded by prophage showed that antibiotic resistance genes was not predicted for any of the prophages except for one questionable prophage, while 53 virulence genes and 169 carbohydrate active enzymes were predicted from 11.24 and 44.1% prophages, respectively. Most of the prophages (72.29%) mediated horizontal gene transfer of S. maltophilia genome, but only involved in 6.25% of the horizontal gene transfer events. In addition, CRISPR prediction indicated 97.75% S. maltophilia strains contained the CRISPR-Cas system containing 818 spacer sequences. However, these spacer sequences did not match any known S. maltophilia phages, and only a few S. maltophilia prophages. Comparative genomic analysis revealed a highly conserved and syntenic organization with genomic rearrangement between the prophages and the known related S. maltophilia phages. Our results indicate a high prevalence and genetic diversity of prophages in the genome of S. maltophilia, as well as the presence of a large number of uncharacterized phages. It provides an important complement to understanding the diversity and biological characteristics of phages, as well as the interactions and evolution between bacteria and phages.

Wood-inhabiting fungi have important economic values as well as playing a major ecological role in forest ecosystem cycles. The Dabie Mountains, at the junction of Henan, Hubei, and Anhui Provinces, Central China, provide an ideal climate and favorable niches for the speciation and diversification of various forms of life including fungi. We studied the species diversity and community phylogenetics of wood-inhabiting basidiomycetous fungi that revealed 175 wood-inhabiting basidiomycetous species, of which 20 represented unidentified species, based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses of 575 specimens collected from ten sampling sites. These species belonged to two classes, 11 orders, 42 families, and 106 genera of Basidiomycota, and included 12 edible species, 28 medicinal species, four poisonous species, and seven forest pathogens. Four types of fungal distribution pattern at the genus level were recognized for 65 genera, while another 41 genera could not be placed in any known distribution pattern. The five sampling sites in the eastern part of the Dabie Mountains had significantly higher species diversity and phylogenetic diversity of wood-inhabiting basidiomycetous fungi than those in the western part, and thus deserve priority in terms of conservation. The community of wood-inhabiting basidiomycetous fungi in the Dabie Mountains is generally affected by a combination of habitat filtering and competitive exclusion. This study provides a basis on which to build actions for the comprehensive recognition, utilization, and conservation of wood-inhabiting basidiomycetous fungi in the region.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the accuracy of implant placement assisted by a dynamic navigation system, as well as its influencing factors and learning curve. METHODS: At Macao We Care Dental Center, 55 cases of implant placement using dynamic navigation were retrospectively evaluated. To evaluate their accuracy, the apex, tip, and angle deviations of preoperatively planned and postoperatively placed implants were measured. The effects of the upper and lower jaws, different sites or lateral locations of dental implants, and the length and diameter of the implants on accuracy were analyzed, as well as the variation in accuracy with the increase in the number of surgical procedures performed by dentists. RESULTS: The implant had an apex deviation of 1.60 ± 0.94 mm, a tip deviation of 1.83 ± 1.03 mm, and an angle deviation of 3.80 ± 2.09 mm. Statistical differences were observed in the tip deviation of implants at different positions based on three factors: jaw position, lateral location, and tooth position (P < 0.05). The tip deviation of the anterior teeth area was significantly greater than those of the premolar and molar areas. There were no statistically significant differences in apex deviation, tip deviation, or angle deviation between the implants of different diameters and lengths (P > 0.05). There were significant differences in the angle deviation between the final 27 implants and the first 28 implants. Learning curve analysis revealed that angle deviation was negatively correlated with the number of surgical procedures, whereas the regression of apex deviation and tip deviation did not differ statistically. CONCLUSIONS: The accuracy of dynamic navigation-assisted dental implants meets the clinical needs and is higher than that of traditional implants. Different jaw positions, lateral locations, and implant diameters and lengths had no effect on the accuracy of the dental implants guided by the dynamic navigation system. The anterior teeth area had a larger tip deviation than the posterior teeth area did. As the number of dynamic implantation procedures performed by the same implant doctor increased, the angle deviation gradually decreased.

BACKGROUND: Probiotics are commonly used after bariatric surgery. However, uncertainty remains regarding their effects. The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the effect of probiotics in patients with morbid obesity undergoing bariatric surgery. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Science Direct, and Web of Science were searched from inception to April 4, 2023. No language restrictions were applied. Relevant randomized controlled trials and controlled clinical trials were included. We used the aggregated data extracted from the trials and assessed the heterogeneity. When severe heterogeneity was detected, a random effect model was used. All stages of the review were done by independent authors. RESULTS: We screened 2024 references and included 11 randomized controlled trials and controlled clinical trials. Compared with the protocol groups, probiotics showed significant effects on regulating aspartate amino transferase level (MD = -4.32 U/L; 95% CI [-7.10, -1.53], p = 0.002), triglycerides (MD = -20.16 mg/dL; 95% CI [-34.51, -5.82], p = 0.006), weight (MD = -1.99 kg; 95% CI [-3.97, -0.01], p = 0.05), vitamin B12 (MD = 2.24 pg/dL; 95% CI [-0.02, 4.51], p = 0.05), dietary energy (MD = -151.03 kcal; 95% CI [-215.68, -86.37], p < 0.00001), dietary protein (MD = -4.48 g/day, 95% CI [-8.76, -0.20], p = 0.04), dietary carbohydrate (MD = -34.25 g/day, 95% CI [-44.87, -23.62], p < 0.00001), and dietary fiber (MD = -2.17 g/day, 95% CI [-3.21, -1.14], p < 0.0001). There were no severe side effects related to probiotics. CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis suggested that probiotics may delay the progression of liver function injury, improve lipid metabolism, reduce weight, and reduce food intake, although the effects on other indicators were insignificant. Probiotics may be helpful for patients undergoing bariatric surgery. The review was registered on PROSPERO (International prospective register of systematic reviews): CRD42023407970. No primary source of funding.

OBJECTIVES: It has been suggested that the time of day when cardiovascular surgery is performed may affect the surgery outcomes. This study investigated whether there was a difference in risk-adjusted mortality and morbidity outcomes between patients undergoing acute aortic dissection (AAD) during the day or the night. METHODS: Consecutive patients who had undergone Stanford A AAD surgery were enrolled between 2016 and 2020. In the daytime group, surgery was performed between 08:00 and 20:00, and in the nighttime group between 20:00 and 8:00. The primary outcome was in-hospital overall mortality, and the secondary outcomes were overall mortality within a median follow-up time of 35.2 (17.0, 53.5) months and the occurrence of re-entry tears and major bleeding. RESULTS: A total of 925 patients were enrolled. The primary outcome of in-hospital overall mortality did not differ significantly between patients who received daytime or nighttime surgery. Similarly, the secondary outcomes of overall mortality during the follow-up and incidence of re-entry tears and major bleeding did not differ significantly between the groups. Subgroup analysis was also performed according to the surgery type (modified triple-branched stent graft implantation or frozen elephant trunk implantation) and surgical approach (partial upper sternotomy or full median sternotomy) confirming that the time of surgery did not significantly influence the outcomes. Cox regression analysis showed that time from onset to admission (P = 0.036) and time from the onset to surgery (P = 0.045) were significant risk factors for increased mortality during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The time of day when thoracotomy was performed did not significantly affect the clinical outcome and is therefore not a consideration for the improvement of outcome in Stanford A AAD patients.

The genus is a special and crucial taxonomic rank compared with others above the species level, because a species has to be placed in a certain genus instead of any other higher ranks. With more and more new species being described, the placements of their generic position are sometimes incorrect due to the simple phylogenies resulting from inappropriate sampling. Here, we focus on the taxonomy of a small wood-inhabiting fungal genus Hyphodermella. With the most comprehensive sampling to date, the phylogenetic position of Hyphodermella within Phanerochaetaceae is rearranged by employing the same ITS and nLSU regions as in previous studies and also the ITS, nLSU, rpb1, rpb2 and tef1α regions. Three species are excluded from Hyphodermella: H. poroides is placed in a newly introduced monotypic genus Pseudohyphodermella, while H. aurantiaca and H. zixishanensis are transferred to Roseograndinia. Hyphodermella suiae is described as a new species from South China and Vietnam. Keys to eight species in Hyphodermella and five in Roseograndinia are provided. Beyond solving the taxonomic issue of Hyphodermella itself, the current study also aims to suggest that all fungal taxonomists especially beginners should keep in mind to sample as many comprehensive taxa as possible in phylogenetic analyses.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in foods has been associated with severe infections in humans and animals worldwide. In the present study, the molecular characteristics of livestock-associated MRSA (LA-MRSA) and human-associated MRSA (hMRSA) isolates obtained in China, as well as MRSA isolates obtained from raw milk in 2018, were investigated. In total, 343 (20.38%; 343/1,683) S. aureus isolates were obtained from 1,683 raw milk samples from 100 dairy farms in 11 provinces across China. Among these, 49 (2.91%; 49/1,683) were mecA-positive MRSA. All LA-MRSA isolates were resistant to penicillin and highly resistant to erythromycin, sulfisoxazole, and clindamycin. Bioinformatic analysis the 49 genomes of LA-MRSA and 71 previously published hMRSA genomes isolated from Chinese individuals in 2018 indicated that blaZ, erm, ant(6)-Ia, aph(3')-III, tet(K), cat, and aph(2″)-Ia were more prevalent in MRSA from raw milk (P < 0.05) compared to hMRSA. Additionally, hMRSA isolates were more significantly associated with ST5 (P < 0.01) compared to LA-MRSA; in contrast, ST338 was more prevalent among LA-MRSA isolates (P < 0.01). Likewise, the SCCmec type II was only detected in hMRSA isolates, whereas SCCmec type V and IV were more prevalent among LA-MRSA (P < 0.01). Furthermore, core-genome phylogenetic analysis showed the endemic characteristics of LA-MRSA in local provinces, as well as the close evolutionary relationships between MRSA from cattle and humans. Finally, homology analysis of mecA and blaZ genetic contexts revealed a high possibility of horizontal transmission of MRSA resistance genes among raw milk-associated and hMRSA strains, which increases the risk for public health. IMPORTANCE Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is considered a public health concern as it is resistant to multiple antibiotics, thus being in zoonotic transmission of antibiotic resistance genes. MRSA causes serious public health issues and leads to hard-to-treat infections in humans and animals; therefore, it was meaningful to determine the prevalence of MRSA in raw milk samples and investigate phenotype and genotype of antimicrobial resistance and molecular characteristics in livestock-associated MRSA (LA-MRSA) and human-associated MRSA (hMRSA) in China, which could provide a theoretical basis for preventing and controlling the spread of MRSA between livestock and humans.

Introduction: The occlusal force of the teeth in the dental arch and the remaining adjacent natural teeth will change after implant restoration with a free-end missing tooth. This study intends to use the T-SCAN III scanner to collect dynamic quantitative data before and after the restoration of free-end implants and to explore the application of the T-SCAN III in redistributing the occlusal force of free-end implants. Methods: In this study, 24 patients with free-end implant restoration were selected, and their occlusion was tested before, immediately after, and 3 months after implant restoration. Results: In all 24 cases, the bite force of the first natural tooth adjacent to the implanted tooth after restoration changed from 19.12% ± 9.48%-12.93% ± 11.47% (p < 0.01). For additional data analysis, all cases were further subdivided by single implant and fixed bridge restorations. In 17 cases, there was a successful follow-up after 3 months. The percentage of the total bite force of dental arch with implant increased from 41.92% ± 10.78%-53.06% ± 10.71% (p < 0.01). Discussion: This study shows that the free-end implant restoration protects the remaining natural teeth, and the patient's missing dental arch bite force improves within 3 months of implant restoration.

It comprises a database linking data files to metadata and electronic laboratory notes; a module collecting data from multiple laboratories into one location; a protocol for searching and sharing data and a module for automatic analyses that populates a website. These modules can be used together or individually, by single laboratories or worldwide collaborations.

Incipient diagnosis and noninvasive forecasts using urinary biomarkers are important for preventing diabetic kidney disease (DKD) progression, but they are also controversial. Previous studies have shown a potential relationship between urinary tubular biomarkers (UTBs) and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome in patients with DKD. Thus, we further evaluated the clinical significance of combined detection of urinary biomarkers in noninvasively predicting the extent of renal damage in patients with early DKD with kidney qi deficiency syndrome, and preliminarily explored the potential biological link between UTBs and TCM syndrome in DKD. We categorized 92 patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus into three groups as follows: 20 patients with normoalbuminuria, 50 patients with microalbuminuria, and 22 patients with macroalbuminuria. We found that, in all groups, 24 hr urinary albumin (24hUAlb) and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) showed stepwise and significant increases. Urinary cystatin C (UCysC), urinary N-acetyl-ß-d-glucosaminidase (UNAG), and urinary retinol-binding protein (URBP) synchronously increased gradually, consistent with the degree of albuminuria in all groups. Moreover, 24hUAlb and UACR were positively correlated with UCysC, UNAG, and URBP, respectively. In 72 patients with Type 2 DKD with albuminuria, a positive correlation was observed between UNAG and URBP, UCysC was also positively correlated with UNAG and URBP, respectively. Additionally, TCM syndrome distributional characteristics in all patients were consistent with clinical manifestations of kidney qi deficiency syndrome. Therefore, the combined detection of UCysC, UNAG, URBP, and UAlb may be used as a practical clinical technique to noninvasively forecast the extent of renal injury in patients with early Type 2 DKD with kidney qi deficiency syndrome. UTBs may be one of the biological bases of the specific TCM syndromes in DKD.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the combined effects of frailty and cognitive impairment on adverse outcomes, including new falls and new activities of daily living (ADL) dependency over a 1-year follow-up. Patients and Methods: A total of 311 older hospitalized patients participated in this retrospective observational study and completed a 1-year follow-up. Frailty was assessed by the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS). Cognitive function was evaluated by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). All participants were classified into four groups: 1) the healthy group (n=180); 2) the cognitive impairment group only (n=38); 3) the frailty group only (n=44); and 4) coexisting frailty and cognitive impairment group (n=49). The follow-up data of adverse outcomes include the incidences of new falls and new ADL dependence. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to explore the associations of frailty and/or cognitive impairment with adverse outcomes. Results: The prevalence rates of frailty, cognitive impairment, and co-occurring frailty with cognitive impairment were 29.9%, 28%, and 15.8%, respectively. Among these four groups, there was a statistical difference in the incidence of new ADL dependence during the follow-up period (9.5% vs 11.4% vs 35.9% vs 61.9%, P < 0.001). After adjusting the confounding variables, older hospitalized patients with frailty and cognitive impairment had a higher risk of new ADL dependence when compared with the healthy group (OR: 4.786, 95% CI: 1.492-15.355), but frailty only or cognitive impairment only was not associated with new ADL dependency. Conclusion: Elderly inpatients with comorbid frailty and cognitive impairment on admission were significantly associated with an increased risk of new ADL dependency 1 year after discharge. Therefore, it is necessary for the early identification of frailty and cognitive impairment, and effective interventions should be implemented.

The genus Sanghuangporus is well-known for its edible and medicinal values. In this study, the most comprehensive occurrence records of Sanghuangporus with accurate species identification are subjected to MaxEnt, to model the current geographic distribution and future range shifts under multiple climate change scenarios in China. The current potential distribution model of Sanghuangporus is excellently predicted as indicated by the value of Area Under Receiver Operator Characteristic Curve. The current potential distribution basically corresponds to the known occurrence records of Sanghuangporus, and provides clues to new suitable habitats. The critical environmental variables to the distribution are annual precipitation, host plant, annual mean temperature and elevation. Host plant is not the most critical contribution to the model, but it indeed plays a decisive role in restricting the distribution of Sanghuangporus. This role is further confirmed by the distribution area of the highly suitable habitat increasing by 155.468%, when excluding host plant from environmental variables. For future scenarios, generally the area of highly suitable habitat for Sanghuangporus extremely increases, but the locations do not change a lot. In conclusion, this study provides important ecological information for the utilization and conservation of the edible and medicinal fungus Sanghuangporus.

E-learning is increasingly evidenced as a conduit for social support exchange among students and protects them against mental health issues, however, the cognitive process of how social support is exchanged remains unclear. This study uses a cognitive theory approach to achieve a more nuanced explanation of students sharing or giving social support in e-learning. Specifically, we adopted the Norm of Reciprocity and Expectation Confirmation Theory to reveal the interconnection between students' perceived social support and giving social support in learning. The model is empirically validated based on survey data of 512 respondents from college students across China regarding their e-learning experience during the first wave of Covid-19. Our findings suggest that the relationship between perceived social support and giving social support is significant and positive, and this relationship is partially mediated by confirmation of social support. These findings imply that e-learning can foster a self-reliant environment for social support exchange among college students. Under such an environment, students' cognitive process in their seeking and sharing social support is majorly following the norm of reciprocity and secondary expectation confirmation theory.

Neocortical feedback is critical for attention, prediction, and learning. To mechanically understand its function requires deciphering its cell-type wiring. Recent studies revealed that feedback between primary motor to primary somatosensory areas in mice is disinhibitory, targeting vasoactive intestinal peptide-expressing interneurons, in addition to pyramidal cells. It is unknown whether this circuit motif represents a general cortico-cortical feedback organizing principle. Here we show that in contrast to this wiring rule, feedback between higher-order lateromedial visual area to primary visual cortex preferentially activates somatostatin-expressing interneurons. Functionally, both feedback circuits temporally sharpen feed-forward excitation eliciting a transient increase-followed by a prolonged decrease-in pyramidal cell activity under sustained feed-forward input. However, under feed-forward transient input, the primary motor to primary somatosensory cortex feedback facilitates bursting while lateromedial area to primary visual cortex feedback increases time precision. Our findings argue for multiple cortico-cortical feedback motifs implementing different dynamic non-linear operations.

The characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the influent and secondary effluent from 6 municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were investigated with a size exclusion chromatogram (SEC) coupled with multiple detectors to simultaneously detect ultraviolet absorbance, fluorescence, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) as a function of molecular weight (MW). The SEC chromatograms showed that biopolymers (>6 kDa) and humic substances (0.5-6 kDa) comprised the significant fraction in the influent, while humic substances became the abundant proportion in the secondary effluent. Direct linkages between MW distribution and hydrophobicity of DOM in the secondary effluent were further explored via SEC analysis of XAD resin fractions. DON and DOC with different hydrophobicity exhibited significantly distinct MW distribution, indicating that it was improper to consider DOC as a surrogate for DON. Different from DOC, the order of averaged MW in terms of DON was hydrophobic neutral ≈ transphilic neutral > hydrophobic acid > transphilic acid > hydrophilic fraction. Fluorescence spectral properties exhibited a significant semi-quantitative correlation with MW and hydrophobicity of DOC, with Pearson's coefficients of -0.834 and 0.754 (p < 0.01) for biopolymer and humic substances. Meanwhile, regional fluorescence proportion was demonstrated to indicate the MW and hydrophobicity properties of DON at the semi-quantitative level. The fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) could be explored to provide a rapid estimation of MW distribution and hydrophobic/hydrophilic proportion of DOC and DON in WWTPs.

Pro-environmental behaviors are rooted in values, and understanding the initial values among college students is pivotal in developing educational strategies to improve their pro-environmental behavior. However, most pro-environmental behavior studies fail to consider the social values and personal values as different dimensional or even conflicting values. This study integrated two distinct values, namely perceived social values and perceived personal values, with the technology acceptance model (TAM) to examine how different values shape college students' pro-environmental behavioral intentions. The proposed model was then empirically validated using survey data from 245 responses from freshmen students at a University in Chongqing. The findings reveal that while perceived social values and perceived personal values are both positively related to behavioral intention, the effect sizes of the former are much larger. Our findings highlight that higher institutions and instructors should continue shaping the prosocial values among college students and create personal values from pro-environmental behavior to reduce the detrimental impact on the environment and achieve sustainability.

Coronavirus disease 2019 was first discovered in December 2019 and subsequently became a global pandemic with serious political, economic, and social implications worldwide. We urgently need to find drugs that can be effective against COVID-19. Among the many observational studies, ivermectin has attracted the attention of many countries. Ivermectin is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug that also has some antiviral effects. We reviewed studies related to ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19 over the last 2 years (2019.12-2022.03) via search engines such as PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCOhost. Seven studies showed a lower mortality rate in the ivermectin group than in the control group, six studies found that the ivermectin group had a significantly fewer length of hospitalization than the control group, and eight studies showed better negative RT-PCR responses in the IVM group than in the control group. Our systematic review indicated that ivermectin may be effective for mildly to moderately ill patients. There is no clear evidence or guidelines to recommend ivermectin as a therapeutic agent for COVID-19, so physicians should use it with caution in the absence of better alternatives in the clinical setting, and self-medication is not recommended for patients.
