RESUMEN

Job demands and employee motivations are studied through a challenging-disruptive needs framework. However, studies on challenging demands show mixed results due to the difference in the level of demand and effect of moderating variables. In this study, based on the Yerkes-Dodson law and conservation of resources theory, the non-linear relationship between challenging demand and work engagement, linear relationship between hindrance demand and work engagement, and moderating effect of stress were verified. A total of 3914 people were surveyed. The results showed that hindrance demand had a negative linear relationship with work engagement. Moreover, challenging demand had a positive effect on work engagement till a certain level, but had an inverted-U relationship with a negative influence thereafter. Stress mindset moderated these relationships and the negative effects of challenging and hindrance demands weakened for a stress-enhancing-mindset. Based on these results, theoretical and practical implications and future research directions were proposed.

Organizational conflict was proposed by dividing it into task conflict and relationship conflict. However, conflict is dynamic and therefor, the conflict transformation is recognized as an important topic in organizational conflict. In particular, task conflict can be easily transformed into relationship conflict due to emotional expression and misattribution in the process of conflict. In addition, task conflict can negatively affect employees' attitudes if it is transformed into relationship conflict even though task conflict can function properly. This transformation of conflict can become more active under certain conditions, and leaders play an important role in this transformation because leaders have an important influence on conflict management. Therefore, this study examined the effect of the transition from task conflict to relationship conflict on burnout and the moderating effect of leaders in the relationship between task and relationship conflict. To this end, surveying 721 employees in 15 departments, and multilevel mediation and moderation analysis were performed. As a result of analysis, employees' burnout increased when task conflict transformed into relationship conflict. In addition, greater the LMX differentiation of leader, greater the effect of task conflict on relationship conflict. Finally, theoretical and practical implications were discussed for leadership and conflict management.

The HEXACO Personality Inventory-Revised (HEXACO-PI-R) has become one of the most heavily applied measurement tools for the assessment of basic personality traits. Correspondingly, the inventory has been translated to many languages for use in cross-cultural research. However, formal tests examining whether the different language versions of the HEXACO-PI-R provide equivalent measures of the 6 personality dimensions are missing. We provide a large-scale test of measurement invariance of the 100-item version of the HEXACO-PI-R across 16 languages spoken in European and Asian countries (N = 30,484). Multigroup exploratory structural equation modeling and confirmatory factor analyses revealed consistent support for configural and metric invariance, thus implying that the factor structure of the HEXACO dimensions as well as the meaning of the latent HEXACO factors is comparable across languages. However, analyses did not show overall support for scalar invariance; that is, equivalence of facet intercepts. A complementary alignment analysis supported this pattern, but also revealed substantial heterogeneity in the level of (non)invariance across facets and factors. Overall, results imply that the HEXACO-PI-R provides largely comparable measurement of the HEXACO dimensions, although the lack of scalar invariance highlights the necessity for future research clarifying the interpretation of mean-level trait differences across countries.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored how much variance in college student negative drinking consequences is explained by descriptive norm perception, beyond that accounted for by student gender and self-reported alcohol use. METHOD: A derivation sample (N=7565; 54% women) and a replication sample (N=8924; 55.5% women) of undergraduate students completed the Campus Alcohol Survey in classroom settings. RESULTS: Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that student gender and average number of drinks when "partying" were significantly related to harmful consequences resulting from drinking. Men reported more consequences than did women, and drinking amounts were positively correlated with consequences. However, descriptive norm perception did not explain any additional variance beyond that attributed to gender and alcohol use. Furthermore, there was no significant three-way interaction among student gender, alcohol use, and descriptive norm perception. CONCLUSIONS: Norm perception contributed no significant variance in explaining harmful consequences beyond that explained by college student gender and alcohol use.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the relationships between college student gender, alcohol use, protective strategies and harmful drinking consequences. METHOD: A derivation sample (N = 3,851; 54% women) and a replication sample (N = 4,151; 55% women) of undergraduate students completed the Campus Alcohol Survey (CAS) in classroom settings. RESULTS: Although women drank less than men and were less likely to experience harmful consequences, they were more likely to use protective strategies. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that students who consumed at least six drinks when they partied--especially men-were less likely to experience more common consequences (e.g., poor academic performance, property damage, unconsciousness, riding in a vehicle with others who have been drinking) if they engaged in self-protective strategies. Such strategies also helped students who exceeded the median number of drinks to moderate the effect of drinking on less common consequences (e.g., vehicular accidents, class failure, conflicts with authorities). CONCLUSIONS: These findings add to the growing literature on contextual events that protect students from harm while drinking.

RESUMEN

Norms developed by Colligan, Osborne, Swenson, and Offord (1983) and others at the Mayo Clinic for the MMPI overcome criticisms that the MMPI is not useful in 2003 and representative. This study ascertained the classification of MMPI profiles of clinicians. Mayo Clinic norms are warranted in view of the similar classifications made using both methods based on the same MMPI data.
