Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is an important cause of death in cats. Thoracic manifestations are less common than abdominal manifestations, and FIP-associated respiratory disease is poorly documented. This study aimed to investigate pathological findings in the respiratory tract of cats with FIP and the occurrence and distribution of feline coronavirus antigen in the respiratory tract using immunohistochemistry. A retrospective study was carried out on 112 cats with FIP, of which 66 had inflammatory histological lesions in the respiratory tract (58.9%) and were included in this study. Three major gross patterns were defined: marked fibrin deposition in the thoracic cavity with lung atelectasis; marked fibrin deposition in the thoracic cavity with lung pyogranulomas; and lung pyogranulomas without thoracic effusion. Histological analysis revealed primary lesions in the visceral pleura and lung parenchyma at a similar frequency, with multifocal to diffuse presentations. Marked lesions were commonly observed. Five major histological patterns were defined: pleuritis; pleuritis and vasculitis/perivascular injury in the lung parenchyma; pleuritis and pneumonia; perivascular injury in the parenchyma without pleuritis; and pneumonia without pleuritis. In the pleura and pulmonary parenchyma, FIP virus antigen was detected in perivascular and peribronchial macrophages and in macrophages within bronchial-associated lymphoid tissue and foci of necrosis and inflammation in the pleura and lung parenchyma. Co-infections with retroviruses were detected in 47 cats (71.2%), mainly with feline leukemia virus (62.2%). Although FIP is a systemic disease, some cats developed significant lesions in the thoracic cavity, including involvement of the upper respiratory tract and presenting respiratory signs, without other classic signs of FIP. This work advances our knowledge of FIP in the respiratory system, helping veterinarians to recognize the various presentations of this disease.

Streptococcus didelphis was once reported as related to severe infections in opossums. Thus, we present the first comprehensive whole-genome characterization of clinical S. didelphis strains isolated from white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris). Long-read whole-genome sequencing was performed using the MinION platform, which allowed the prediction of several genomic features. We observed that S. didelphis genomes harbor a cluster for streptolysin biosynthesis and a conserved genomic island with genes involved in transcriptional regulation (arlR) and transmembrane transport (bcrA). Antimicrobial resistance genes for several drug classes were found, including beta-lactam, which is the main antimicrobial class used in Streptococcus spp. infections; however, no phenotypical resistance was observed. In addition, we predicted the presence of 33 virulence factors in the analyzed genomes. High phylogenetic similarity was observed between clinical and reference strains, yet no clonality was suggested. We also proposed dnaN, gki, pros, and xpt as housekeeping candidates to be used in S. didelphis sequence typing. This is the first whole-genome characterization of S. didelphis, whose data provide important insights into its pathogenicity.

Among vector-borne helminths, filarioids of the genus Dipetalonema (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) localize in several tissues and body cavities of several animal species, causing mild to moderate lesions. The pathological findings associated with Dipetalonema spp. infection in Neotropical monkeys from southern Brazil are herein described, along with a fatal case due to filarial polyserositis and entrapment of an intestinal segment. At necropsy, nematodes were observed in abdominal and thoracic cavities, or in the pericardium of 37 (31.3%) out of the 118 individuals examined (i.e., 35 Alouatta guariba clamitans and two Sapajus nigritus). In addition, at histology, 27.0% of positive animals presented microfilarie (inside blood vessels of lung, spleen, liver, and brain) and 8.1% presented adult nematodes in the heart, lung, and liver. In two cases, cross-sections of filarioids were associated with areas of epicardial thickening with intense fibrosis and pyogranulomatous inflammation in the brain, heart, liver, lungs, or spleen. The DNA fragment was amplify using the cox1 gene, sequenced and analyzed to identify the nematode species collected; presence of Wolbachia was assessed in the filarioids using the 16S rRNA gene. At BLAST analysis of the cox1 gene, 10 sequences showed 91.7% nucleotide identity with Dipetalonema gracile, and two with D. gracile (98.5%) and Dipetalonema graciliformis (98.3%). Phylogenetic analyses clustered sequences of the cox1 obtained in this study in two clades corresponding with the host species. Wolbachia sp. endosymbiont was detected in four samples. Data herein reported provide a description of pathological lesions associated with the infection by Dipetalonema spp., suggesting that they may cause disease in Neotropical monkeys. In addition, a better understanding of diversity and biology of Dipetalonema spp. in South America is needed to assess the impact they may cause in native non-human primates from Brazil.

Functional pheochromocytomas secrete catecholamines and have been associated with cardiovascular lesions in dogs. This study aimed to describe the postmortem pathological findings in the cardiovascular system of dogs with pheochromocytoma and to evaluate the expression of cardiac troponin C in these dogs using immunohistochemical analysis. Twelve cases were identified, with a mean age of 10.6 years. The heart of all dogs was enlarged and with concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricular myocardium. Histological analysis showed cardiomyocyte necrosis and degeneration in the myocardium, with frequent bands of contraction, fibrosis, inflammation, and thickening of the medium-caliber arteries in the myocardium. There was a marked decrease or absence of immunolabeling in necrotic cardiomyocytes. We conclude that IHC for troponin C can be a useful tool for detecting myocardial necrosis in dogs with pheochromocytomas, including early cases of necrosis with only incipient cardiac changes where overt histologic abnormalities are not immediately apparent in the cardiomyocytes.

The aim of this study was to characterize the pathological and immunohistochemical aspects of pancreatic carcinoma in cats, through a retrospective study. From January 2010 to December 2021, 1,908 cat necropsies were performed, in which 20 cases of exocrine pancreatic neoplasia were diagnosed (1.04%). Affected cats were mature adults and seniors, except for one 1-year-old cat. In 11 cases the neoplasm was a soft, focal nodule on the left (8/11) or right (3/11) lobe. In nine cases there were multifocal nodules throughout the pancreatic parenchyma. The size of the single masses ranged from 2 to 12 cm, and the multifocal masses from 0.5 to 2 cm. The most frequent tumour type was acinar carcinoma (11/20), followed by ductal carcinoma (8/20), undifferentiated carcinoma (1/20) and carcinosarcoma (1/20). On immunohistochemical evaluation, all the neoplasms were remarkably reactive to pancytokeratin antibody. The ductal carcinomas were strongly reactive for cytokeratins 7 and 20, which proved to be a good marker for pancreatic ductal carcinoma in cats. The main form of metastasis was abdominal carcinomatosis, with a marked invasion of blood and lymphatic vessels by neoplastic cells. Our findings reinforce the fact that pancreatic carcinoma should be rated highly in the differential diagnosis in mature adult and senior cats with abdominal masses, ascites and/or jaundice.

We describe an unusual case of prostatitis caused by Streptococcus canis evolving to endocarditis and splenic, renal, and cerebral thromboembolism in a dog, associated with a Sertoli cell tumour in a cryptic testis and diffuse prostatic squamous metaplasia. A nine-year-old, intact male, mixed-breed dog was presented to a veterinary teaching hospital with abdominal pain and prostration. Physical examination and abdominal ultrasonography revealed an atrophic right testicle located in the subcutaneous tissue. The left testicle was in the abdominal cavity with increased dimensions and irregular contours. Complete blood count analysis showed marked neutrophilic leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia. After clinical worsening, euthanasia was performed, and the dog was submitted to post-mortem examination. The main gross findings included testicular malposition with one cryptic and one ectopic testis, enlarged prostate with purulent content, distension of the urinary bladder with cloudy urine, vegetative valvular endocarditis in the mitral valve, and spleen and renal infarcts. Histological examination showed a Sertoli cell tumour in the abdominal testis, diffuse prostatic squamous metaplasia with marked keratinization associated with bacterial prostatitis, fibrinonecrotic cystitis, bacterial endocarditis with marked myxomatous degeneration in the mitral valve, and splenic, renal, and cerebral thromboembolism. Microbiological analysis identified Streptococcus canis in the prostate and mitral valve. Sertoli cell tumour of cryptic testis increases oestrogen production and leads to squamous metaplasia of the prostate, which should be considered as predisposing factors for ascending S. canis infection from the urogenital tract to the prostate. Then, haematogenous spread of S. canis from the prostate to mitral valve cause endocarditis and subsequent thromboembolism and infarcts, all decisive to poor prognosis in this case.

Generalized and fatal felid alphaherpesvirus-1 (FeHV-1) natural infection with liver involvement is rarely reported in cats, and the occurrence of herpesvirus viraemia with internal organ histologic lesions in adult cats is unknown. A 1.5-year-old cat, female, mixed breed, positive for feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) presented in a veterinary teaching hospital with sneezing, nasal discharge, anorexia, and diarrhoea after two weeks, evolving to inspiratory dyspnoea. Complete blood count and serum biochemistry analysis showed marked leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. After clinical worsening and lack of treatment response, the cat was euthanized. Pathological findings included hepatic necrosis, fibrinonecrotic tracheitis, and bronchointerstitial pneumonia. Marked amounts of coccobacillary bacteria were observed covering the necrotic tracheal and bronchial mucosa, at the cytoplasm of alveolar macrophages, and free in alveoli lumen, mimicking a primary bacterial tracheitis and pneumonia. Both lung and tracheal bacteria exhibited marked immunolabeling in anti-Escherichia coli immunohistochemistry. In addition, rare epithelial cells of bronchi contained round, eosinophilic, intranuclear viral inclusion bodies (4-7 µm) that marginate the chromatin, characteristic of FeHV-1 infection. Strong multifocal anti-FeHV-1 immunolabeling was observed in necrotic epithelial cells of the liver, trachea, and lungs. Generalized herpesvirus infection with the occurrence of acute hepatic necrosis and severe respiratory illness is a potential differential diagnosis in FeLV-positive cats with respiratory signs. The immunodepression in these cats probably favours a FeHV-1 viraemia in addition to the development of opportunistic bacterial infections, such as Escherichia coli, and it is associated with a poor outcome.

BACKGROUND: Anthropogenic disturbances are the main threats to nonhuman primates conservation, and infectious diseases may also play a key role in primate population decline. This study aimed to determine the main causes of death in neotropical primates. METHODS: A retrospective study of post-mortem examinations was conducted on 146 neotropical primates between January 2000 and December 2018. RESULTS: Conclusive diagnoses were obtained in 68.5% of the cases, of which 59 corresponded to non-infectious causes and 41 to infectious diseases. Trauma was the main cause of death (54/100), with anthropogenic stressors caused by blunt force trauma injuries (collision with vehicles) and puncture wound injuries associated with interspecific aggression (dog predation) were the most common factors. Other causes of death included bacterial diseases (27%), followed by parasitic diseases (12%), neoplasms (2%), and viral diseases (2%). CONCLUSIONS: Free-ranging primates were mostly affected by non-infectious causes, while captive primates were by infectious conditions.

Pneumonia in cats may cause severe lung injury and consequent death. We describe the post-mortem findings and aetiologies of naturally fatal pneumonia in 78 domestic cats, using gross and histopathological examinations, immunohistochemistry and microbiological techniques. Morphological patterns found were bronchopneumonia (27/78), interstitial (15/78), bronchointerstitial (13/78), granulomatous (8/78), aspiration (8/78) and pyogranulomatous (5/78) pneumonia, and pleuropneumonia (2/78). Bacterial pneumonia was identified as the most common cause (32/78), followed by viral (15/28 feline calicivirus, 10/28 felid alphaherpesvirus 1 and 3/28 both viruses), aspiration (8/78), fungal (5/78) and parasitic pneumonia (5/78). Co-infection with feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukaemia virus was found in 54 cats. Viral infections involved cats of all ages, indicating the importance of investigating viral causes in cats with respiratory diseases, including in adult and ageing cats.

Metal injection molding (MIM) has become an important manufacturing technology for biodegradable medical devices. As a biodegradable metal, pure iron is a promising biomaterial due to its mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In light of this, we performed the first study that manufactured and evaluated the in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility of samples of iron porous implants produced by MIM with a new eco-friendly feedstock from natural rubber (Hevea brasiliensis), a promisor binder that provides elastic property in the green parts. The iron samples were submitted to tests to determine density, microhardness, hardness, yield strength, and stretching. The biocompatibility of the samples was studied in vitro with adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ADSCs) and erythrocytes, and in vivo on a preclinical model with Wistar rats, testing the iron samples after subcutaneous implant. Results showed that the manufactured samples have adequate physical, and mechanical characteristics to biomedical devices and they are cytocompatible with ADSCs, hemocompatible and biocompatible with Wistars rats. Therefore, pure iron produced by MIM can be considered a promising material for biomedical applications.

There are few pathological and immunohistochemical descriptions of thyroid neoplasms in cats. We investigated neoplasms of the thyroid in 31 cats (average age 15.6 years) in Southern Brazil. Most (96.8%) of these cases were classified as follicular adenomas and were predominantly unilateral and multinodular. Histologically, macrofollicular adenomas were the most common type observed. Carcinomas represented 3.2% of the investigated tumours. By immunohistochemical labelling, thyroglobulin was expressed more commonly than paired box gene 8 or thyroid transcription factor 1 in the follicular adenomas. One carcinoma was immunopositive for thyroglobulin, pancytokeratin, chromogranin A and synaptophysin, suggestive of a calcitonin-negative neuroendocrine carcinoma.

Biodegradable metallic materials (BMMs) are expected to corrode gradually in vivo after providing the structural support to the tissue during its regeneration and healing processes. These characteristics make them promising candidates for use in stents. These endoprostheses are produced from metal alloys by casting and thermomechanical treatment. Since porous alloys and metals have less corrosion resistance than dense ones, the use of powder metallurgy becomes an option to produce them. Among the metals, iron has been proposed as a material in the manufacturing of stents because of its mechanical properties. However, even then it is unclear what toxicity threshold is safe to the body. Thus, the objective of this research was to verify the biocompatibility of sintered 99.95% and 99.5% pure iron by powder metallurgy in vitro with Adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ADSCs) and in vivo with a Wistar rat model. Herein, characterizations of iron powder samples produced by the powder metallurgy and the process parameters as compression pressure, atmosphere, sintering time and temperature were determined to evaluate the potential of production of biodegradable implants. The samples obtained from pure iron were submitted to tests of green and sintered density, porosity, microhardness, hardness and metallography. The biocompatibility study was performed by indirect and direct cell culture with iron. The effects of corrosion products of iron on morphology, viability, and proliferation of ADSCs were evaluated in vitro. Hemolysis assay was performed to verify the hemocompatibility of the samples. In vivo biocompatibility was evaluated after pure iron discs were implanted subcutaneously into the dorsal area of Wistar rats that were followed up to 6 months. The results presented in this paper validated the potential to produce biodegradable medical implants by powder metallurgy. Both iron samples were hemocompatible and biocompatible in vitro and in vivo, although the 99.95% iron had better performance in vitro than 99.5%.

A ten year-old Holstein cow had an intermittent bloody diarrhea, evolving to anorexia and recumbency, followed by death. Mycotic segmental enteritis was diagnosed based on the pathological and immunohistochemical findings. Rhizopus microsporus was identified as the causal agent through fungal culture and PCR analysis. Intestinal mucormycosis is poorly described in cattle and should, therefore, be included as a differential diagnosis in cases of diarrhea and death in ruminants, especially when there is disruption of the normal balance of the alimentary microbiota.

Gastrointestinal neoplasms (GIN) are uncommon in dogs, but they mainly show malignant behavior and poor prognosis. The types of GIN in dogs and their frequency, as well as their epidemiological and histopathological characteristics were analyzed through a retrospective study of biopsies from 24.711 dogs from 2005 to 2017. Additionally, histological sections of neoplasms were subjected to immunohistochemistry (IHC) using antibodies against pancytokeratin, vimentin, smooth muscle actin, c-Kit, S-100, CD31, CD79αcy, and neuron-specific enolase. Of the total samples from dogs analyzed, 88 corresponded to GIN. Neoplasms occurred more frequently in purebred dogs (64.8%, 57/88), males (53.4%, 47/88), with a median age of 10 years. The intestine was affected by 84.1% (74/88) of the cases. Of these, the large intestine was the most affected (67.6%, 50/74). Most of the neoplasms had malignant behavior (88.6%, 78/88). Regarding the classification of neoplasms, 46.6% (41/88) of the diagnoses corresponded to epithelial, 46.6% (41/88) were mesenchymal, 5.7% (5/88) were hematopoietic, and 1.1% (1/88) was neuroendocrine. The most frequently diagnosed neoplasms were papillary adenocarcinoma (19.3%, 17/88), leiomyosarcoma (17.0%, 15/88), gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) (12.5%, 11/88), and leiomyoma (5.0%, 8/88). Adenocarcinomas were located mainly in the rectum, whereas leiomyosarcomas and GISTs developed mainly in the cecum. Epithelial neoplasms showed a greater potential for lymphatic invasion whereas mesenchymal neoplasms appeared to be more expansive with intratumoral necrosis and hemorrhage. Immunohistochemistry was found to be an important diagnostic technique for the identification of infiltrating cells in carcinomas and an indispensable technique for the definitive diagnosis of sarcomas.(AU)


Neoplasmas gastrointestinais (NGI) são pouco comuns em cães, mas possuem principalmente comportamento maligno e prognóstico reservado. Os tipos de NGI em cães e sua frequência, bem como características epidemiológicas e histopatológicas foram analisados por meio de um estudo retrospectivo dos exames de biópsias de 24.711 cães entre os anos de 2005 a 2017. Adicionalmente, cortes histológicos de NGI foram submetidos à técnica de imuno-histoquímica (IHQ), utilizando os anticorpos anti-pancitoqueratina, vimentina, actina de músculo liso, c-Kit, S-100, CD31, CD79αcy e enolase neurônio específica. Do total de cães analisados, 88 corresponderam a NGI não linfoides. Os neoplasmas ocorreram com maior frequência em cães de raça pura (64,8%, 57/88), machos (53,4%, 47/88), com mediana de idade de 10 anos. O intestino foi acometido em 84,1% dos casos (74/88). Destes, o intestino grosso foi o segmento mais afetado (67,6%, 50/74). A maior parte dos neoplasmas tinha comportamento maligno (88,6%, 78/88). Quanto à classificação, 46,6% (41/88) dos diagnósticos corresponderam a neoplasmas epiteliais, 46,6% (41/88) mesenquimais, 5,7% (5/88) hematopoiéticos e 1,1% (1/88), neuroendócrino. Os neoplasmas mais frequentemente diagnosticados foram adenocarcinoma papilar (19,3%, 17/88), leiomiossarcoma (17,0%, 15/88), tumor estromal gastrointestinal (GIST) (12,5%, 11/88) e leiomioma (12,5%, 8/88). Adenocarcinomas localizavam-se principalmente no reto, enquanto leiomiossarcoma e GISTs desenvolveram-se principalmente no ceco. Os neoplasmas epiteliais demonstraram um potencial maior de invasão linfática enquanto que os mesenquimais aparentaram ser mais expansivos, com necrose e hemorragia intratumorais. A imuno-histoquímica mostrou ser uma técnica diagnóstica importante para a identificação de células neoplásicas infiltravas no caso dos carcinomas e uma técnica indispensável para o diagnóstico definitivo de sarcomas.(AU)

ABSTRACT: Hypercortisolism is a common endocrinopathy in dogs; however, in a few cases, bilateral functional adrenocortical adenomas cause spontaneous disease, and thrombotic events are considered uncommon complications. The aim of this report was to describe a case of bilateral adrenocortical adenoma in a dog with hyperadrenocorticism associated with distal aortic and iliac thrombosis, with emphasis on clinical and pathological aspects. A 15-year-old spayed female Dachshund with a previous clinical history of hyperadrenocorticism presented with acute bilateral hindlimb paraparesis. A vertebral thoracolumbar radiography was performed and did not present any evidence of intervertebral disk disease or vertebral abnormalities; however, abdominal ultrasound and vascular Doppler evaluation revealed bilateral adrenal enlargement in addition to an aortic and external iliac artery thrombus. The animal was euthanized. At necropsy, both adrenal glands were enlarged by well-demarcated neoplastic nodules in the parenchyma, and a thrombus caudal to the abdominal aorta bifurcation within the external iliac arteries that extended to the left external iliac artery was noted. Histological evaluation revealed a well-differentiated neoplastic proliferation of cortical epithelial cells, consistent with bilateral adenoma, and muscular necrosis in the pelvic limbs was also observed. Bilateral functional adrenocortical adenoma; although, very rare, should be considered as a cause of hypercortisolism, and aortic thrombosis in dogs should be considered as a possible consequence.


RESUMO: Hipercortisolismo é uma endocrinopatia comum em cães, no entanto, apenas em poucos casos adenomas adrenocorticais funcionais bilaterais são a causa de doença espontânea, e eventos trombóticos são considerados complicações incomuns. O objetivo deste relato foi descrever um caso de adenoma adrenocortical bilateral em um cão com hiperadrenocorticismo associado a trombose aórtica distal e ilíaca, com ênfase nos aspectos clínicos e patológicos. Um cão, Dachshund, fêmea castrada, de 15 anos, com histórico clínico prévio de hiperadrenocorticismo, apresentou paraparesia aguda dos membros posteriores. Foi realizada radiografia toracolombar vertebral, a qual não mostrou nenhuma evidência de doença do disco intervertebral ou anormalidades vertebrais; no entanto, ultrassonografia abdominal e Doppler vascular revelaram um trombo na aorta e artéria ilíaca externa, e adrenomegalia bilateral. O animal foi submetido à eutanásia. Na necropsia, ambas as adrenais estavam distendidas por nódulos neoplásicos bem delimitados no parênquima e notou-se um trombo caudalmente à bifurcação da aorta abdominal às artérias ilíacas externas, estendendo-se à ilíaca externa esquerda. Na avaliação histológica observou-se proliferação neoplásica bem diferenciada de células epiteliais corticais, consistente com adenoma bilateral; também foi observada necrose muscular nos membros pélvicos. O adenoma adrenocortical funcional bilateral, embora muito raro, deve ser considerado uma causa de hipercortisolismo, e a trombose aórtica em cães deve ser considerada uma possível consequência.

Astroviruses are a common cause of gastroenteritis in children worldwide and can also cause infection in a range of domestic and wild animal species. Canine astrovirus (formally named as Mamastrovirus 5, MAstV5) has been reported worldwide, and its role as an enteric pathogen is still controversial. Herein, we describe the genomic characterization of a MAstV5 (strain crab-eating fox/2016/BRA) identified in a wild canid (Cerdocyon thous) diagnosed with canine distemper virus (CDV) as causa mortis. The nearly complete genome comprised 6579 nt in length and displayed the archetypal organization of astroviruses. The present report is the first evidence of MAstV5 infection in an animal species other than the dog and highlights a possible natural astrovirus spillover between domestic and wild canids. Moreover, these results show the first evidence of extra-intestinal MAstV5, suggesting a virus systemic spread. This work is expected to contribute to a better understanding of the astroviruses biology and their interactions with the wildlife health.

Realizou-se um estudo retrospectivo com o objetivo de determinar os tipos de neoplasmas em bovinos e a sua frequência. Foram analisados os casos de necropsias e biopsias de bovinos com diagnóstico de neoplasia, submetidos ao Setor de Patologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (SPV-UFRGS), entre janeiro de 2005 e dezembro de 2014. De um total de 4.188 exames realizados em bovinos, 154 foram diagnosticados como neoplasmas. Destes, 100 casos foram a causa da morte, 41 foram achados de frigorífico e 13 casos eram biopsias de cirurgias realizadas por veterinários de campo. Os neoplasmas ocorreram com maior frequência em bovinos adultos (96/154), fêmeas (125/154) e a raça mais acometida foi a Holandesa (79/154). Os neoplasmas mais frequentes foram linfoma (73/154), carcinoma de células escamosas (28/154), papiloma (9/154), melanoma (6/154) e feocromocitoma (6/154). Os sistemas mais acometidos foram o hemopoiético (75/154) e tegumentar (25/154). Conclui-se que o linfoma e o carcinoma de células escamosas são os neoplasmas mais frequentes em bovinos diagnosticados no SPV-UFRGS, Brasil.(AU)


A retrospective study has been conducted with the objective of determining the types of bovine neoplasms and their frequency. Necropsy and biopsy cases with diagnosis of neoplasm in cattle submitted to the Setor de Patologia Veterinária of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (SPV-UFRGS) from January 2005 to December 2014 were analyzed. A total of 4,188 exams were performed in cattle, and 154 were diagnosed as neoplasm. From these 154 occurrences, 100 cases of neoplasm were the cause of death, 41 were collected from cattle in slaughter house and 13 were biopsies sent by field veterinarians. Neoplasms occurred more frequently in adult cattle (96/154), females (125/154) and the most affected breed was Holstein-Friesian (79/154). The most common neoplasms were lymphoma (73/154), squamous cell carcinoma (28/154), papilloma (9/154), melanoma (6/154) and pheochromocytoma (6/154). The most affected systems were hemopoietic (75/154) and integumentary (25/154). We concluded that lymphoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common neoplasms in cattle diagnosed in SPV-UFRGS, Brazil.(AU)
