RESUMEN

In order to maximally reduce the toxicity of fullerenol (the first derivative of C60, FD-C60), and increase its biomedical efficiency, the second derivative SD-C60 (3HFWC, Hyper-Harmonized Hydroxylated Fullerene Water Complex) was created. Several different methods were applied in the comparative characterization of FD-C60 and SD-C60 with the same OH groups in their core. FD-C60 as an individual structure was about 1.3 nm in size, while SD-C60 as an individual structure was 10-30 nm in size. Based on ten physicochemical methods and techniques, FD-C60 and SD-C60 were found to be two different substances in terms of size, structure, and physicochemical properties; FD-C60, at 100 °C, had endothermic characteristics, while SD-C60, at 133 °C, had exothermic characteristics; FD-C60 did not have water layers, while SD-C60 had water layers; the zeta potential of FD-C60 was -25.85 mV, while it was -43.29 mV for SD-C60. SD-C60 is a promising substance for use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

The human body contains 60-70% water, depending on age. As a body fluid, it is not only a medium in which physical and chemical processes take place, but it is also one of the active mediators. Water is the richest substance with non-covalent hydrogen bonds. Water molecules, by themselves (in vacuum), are diamagnetic but when organized into clusters, they become diamagnetic or paramagnetic. Also, biomolecules (DNA, collagen, clathrin, and other proteins) have non-covalent hydrogen bonds in their structure. The interaction, as well as signal transmission, between water and biomolecules is achieved through the vibrations of covalent and non-covalent hydrogen bonds, which determine the state and dynamics of conformational changes in biomolecules. Disruptive conformational changes in biomolecules, cells, and tissues lead to their dysfunctionality, so they are a frequent cause of many disorders and diseases. For example, the rearrangement of hydrogen bonding due to mitochondrial disease mutation in cytochrome bc1 disturbs heme bH redox potential and spin state. In order to prevent and repair the dysfunctional conformational changes, a liquid substance was developed based on the second derivative of the C60 molecule (SD-C60), which has classical and quantum properties. The characterization of SD-C60 by UV-VIS-NIR, FTIR, TEM, and AFM/MFM was performed and it is shown that SD-C60 water layers generate vibrations with near-zero phase dispersion which are transmitted through Fibonacci's water chains to biomolecules. In comparison with previously published SD-C60 derivate (3HFWC, size until 10 nm, and 1-5 water layers), the improved formulation (3HFWC-W, size 10-25 nm, and 6-9 water layers) showed multiplied cytotoxic activity against melanoma cell lines of different aggressiveness. Apart from this, the mode of action was preserved and based on an induction of senescence rather than cell death. Importantly, high selectivity towards malignant phenotypes was detected. Observed effects can be ascribed to a machinery of hydrogen bonds, which are generated in SD-C60 and transmitted through water to biomolecules. This approach may open a new field in science and healthcare-a "water-based nanomedicine".

CONTEXT: Benzene and other aromatic groups, as planar groups with [Formula: see text] electrons cloud, tend to form stacking interactions which have an important role in various chemical and biological processes. In order to have a better insight in the nature of these interactions, we have performed a fractal analysis on patterns of electron density and electrostatic potential for two benzenes in stacking interaction. The calculated fractal dimension follows the trend of the calculated interaction energy for the interplanar distances of 4.0 to 6.0 Å, which partially coincides with the strongest attractive stacking interactions. The fractal dimension vs. energy dependences were fitted with the logistic curve, and the fitting coefficient was 0.96 up to 1.00. METHODS: For the benzene stacking interaction energy, with a range of conformations and distances between two benzenes, DFT calculations at the B3LYP+D3/aug-cc-pVDZ level were performed with the TURBOMOLE software. The fractal analysis for electron density and electrostatic potential has been done by python scripting.

Several viruses have been described to infect sugar beet (Beta vulgaris var. saccharifera L.), but virus yellows disease is one of the most important diseases in many sugar beet growing areas. It is caused by four viruses either in single or mixed infection, including the poleroviruses beet western yellows virus (BWYV), beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV), and beet chlorosis virus (BChV), and a closterovirus beet yellows virus (BYV) (Stevens et al. 2005; Hossain et al. 2021). In August 2019, five samples of sugar beet plants showing yellowing on interveinal leaf tissue were collected in a sugar beet crop in the Novi Sad locality (Vojvodina Province, Serbia). Double-antibody sandwich (DAS)-ELISA commercial antisera (DSMZ, Braunschweig, Germany) were used to test the collected samples for the presence of the most common sugar beet viruses: beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), BWYV, BMYV, BChV, and BYV. Commercial positive and negative controls were included in each ELISA test. BYV was serologically detected in all sugar beet samples, but no other viruses tested were found. The presence of BYV in sugar beet plants was further confirmed by conventional reverse transcription (RT)-PCR. Total RNAs were extracted using the RNeasy Plant Mini Kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany), according to the manufacturer's instructions, and used as template in the RT-PCR. Total RNAs extracted from healthy sugar beet leaves and molecular-grade water were included as negative controls in the RT-PCR analysis. RT-PCR confirmed the presence of BYV in all naturally infected plants using four sets of specific primers (Kundu and Rysánek 2004), whereas no amplification products were obtained in the negative controls. The RT-PCR products derived from isolate 209-19 were purified and directly sequenced in both directions using the same primer pairs as in RT-PCR (accession numbers OQ686792 to OQ686794). Multiple sequence alignment of the L-Pro and N-terminal part of the MET genes showed that the Serbian BYV isolate had the highest nucleotide identity (99.01% and 100%, respectively) with several BYV isolates in GenBank originating from different parts of the world. Sequence analysis of the HSP70 gene showed the highest similarity (99.79%) with the BYV-Cro-L isolate found in Croatia. In a semi-persistent type of transmission test, aphids (Myzus persicae Sulzer) were allowed to feed on BYV-infected leaves of an ELISA-positive sample (209-19) for 48 hours, and then the aphids were transferred to five plants each of Spinacia oleracea cv. Matador and B. vulgaris ssp. vulgaris cv. Eduarda for a three-day inoculation access period. All test plants were successfully infected and exhibited symptoms in the form of interveinal yellowing up to three weeks postinoculation. RT-PCR confirmed the presence of BYV in all inoculated plants. A study by Nikolic (1951) suggested a possible presence of BYV based on symptoms observed on sugar beet plants in fields, but to our knowledge this is the first report of BYV in sugar beet in Serbia. As sugar beet is one of the most important industrial crops in Serbia, the presence of BYV could lead to significant losses, considering that aphid vectors are widespread under Serbian environmental conditions. The discovery of BYV on sugar beet should prompt a more detailed survey and subsequent testing of susceptible hosts to determine the distribution and incidence of BYV in Serbia.

INTRODUCTION: In early cervical cancer (EEC), 10 to 15% of patients without nodal metastasis (N-) will suffer from recurrences with further similar survival as N+ patients. However, no clinical, imaging or pathological risk-factor is today available to identify them. In the present study, we hypothesized that the N- histologically characterized patients who present a poor prognosis could be patients for whom metastasis are missed by classical procedure. Therefore, we propose to research HPV tumoral DNA (HPVtDNA) in pelvic Sentinel Lymph Nodes (SLN) biopsy using ultrasensitive droplet-based digital PCR (ddPCR) to detect eventual occult metastasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty HPV16, HPV18 or HPV33 positive EEC N- patients with available SLN were included. In SLN, HPV16 E6, HPV18 E7 and HPV33 E6 gene were respectively detected using ultrasensitive ddPCR technology. Survival data were analysed using Kaplan-Meier-curves and log-rank-test to compare progression-free survival (PFS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) in two groups according to their HPVtDNA status in SLN. RESULTS: More than half (51.7%) of the patients finally showed HPVtDNA positivity in SLN initially diagnosed as negative by histology. Two patients with negative HPVtDNA SLN and 6 with positive HPVtDNA SLN group presented recurrence. Finally, all of the 4 deaths listed in our study occurred in the positive HPVtDNA SLN group. CONCLUSION: These observations hint that the use of ultrasensitive ddPCR to detect HPVtDNA in SLN could allow the identification of two subgroups of histologically N- patients that may have different prognosis and outcome. To our knowledge, our study is the first one to evaluate the detection of HPVtDNA in SLN in early cervical cancer using ddPCR highlighting its interest as a complementary tool for N- specific early cervical cancer diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating metastatic cervical cancer from another primary tumor can be difficult in patients with a history of cervical cancer and a distant lesion. The use of routine HPV molecular detection and genotyping tests could help in these cases. The objective of this study was to identify if an easy-to-use HPV molecular genotyping assay would allow differentiating between HPV tumor metastasis and a new independent primary non-HPV-induced tumor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2010 and 2020, we identified patients with a primary cervical carcinoma who also had another secondary lesion. This identification included a clinical and histologic differential diagnosis of metastatic cervical cancer versus a new primary cancer or metastatic cancer from another site. We used a routine multiplex real-time PCR (rt-PCR) AnyplexTM II HPV28 (Seegene, Seoul, Republic of Korea) to detect the high-risk (HR)-HPV genome in the distant lesions in these patients. RESULTS: Eight cases of cervical cancer with a new secondary lesion were identified. In seven, HR-HPV DNA was detected in the biopsy of the distant lesion, which confirmed the diagnosis of cervical cancer metastasis. In the remaining case, no HPV was detected in the secondary lung biopsy, confirming the diagnosis of new primary lung cancer. CONCLUSION: Our results pave the way for HPV molecular genotyping use in cases of newly diagnosed distant lesions in patients with a history of HPV cervical neoplasia by using a routine diagnosis process to complete the clinical and histologic differential diagnosis when confronted with ambiguous situations.

INTRODUCTION: Asthma is the most common non-communicable chronic lung condition across all ages. Epidemiological data indicate that many asthma patients in Serbia remain undiagnosed and untreated. The implementation of recent global advances in asthma management is limited due to the lack of a systematic approach, drug availability and regulatory affairs. In addition, the global coronavirus disease pandemic has posed a significant challenge, particularly in resource-limited settings. AREAS COVERED: In this paper, we propose an algorithm for treating adult asthma patients in Serbia. We performed PubMed database search on published asthma clinical trials and guidelines from 1 January 2015 to 10 March 2020. The consensus process incorporated a modified Delphi method that included two rounds of e-mail questionnaires and three rounds of national asthma expert meetings. We focus on 1) objective diagnosis of asthma, 2) the implementation of up-to-date therapeutic options, and 3) the identification and referral of severe asthma patients to newly established severe asthma centers. EXPERT OPINION: Regional specificities and variations in healthcare systems require the adaptation of evidence-based knowledge. Practical, clinically oriented algorithms designed to overcome local barriers in healthcare delivery may facilitate timely and adequate asthma diagnosis and the local implementation of current advances in asthma management.

All water-water contacts in the crystal structures from the Cambridge Structural Database with d OO ≤ 4.0 Šhave been found. These contacts were analysed on the basis of their geometries and interaction energies from CCSD(T)/CBS calculations. The results show 6729 attractive water-water contacts, of which 4717 are classical hydrogen bonds (d OH ≤ 3.0 Šand α ≥ 120°) with most being stronger than -3.3 kcal mol-1. Beyond the region of these hydrogen bonds, there is a large number of attractive interactions (2062). The majority are antiparallel dipolar interactions, where the O-H bonds of two water molecules lying in parallel planes are oriented antiparallel to each other. Developing geometric criteria for these antiparallel dipoles (ß1, ß2 ≥ 160°, 80 ≤ α ≤ 140° and T HOHO > 40°) yielded 1282 attractive contacts. The interaction energies of these antiparallel oriented water molecules are up to -4.7 kcal mol-1, while most of the contacts have interaction energies in the range -0.9 to -2.1 kcal mol-1. This study suggests that the geometric criteria for defining attractive water-water interactions should be broader than the classical hydrogen-bonding criteria, a change that may reveal undiscovered and unappreciated interactions controlling molecular structure and chemistry.

Over the last 15 years, the area planted with soybeans (Glycine max) in Serbia has increased drastically, from 131,000 hectares in 2005 to 230,000 in 2019, and the average yield reached 3.2 t/ha in 2020. The Province of Vojvodina is the most important soybean production region with 95% of the total soybean area in Serbia (www.stat.gov.rs). During the 2021 growing season, soybean seeds with various kinds of symptoms including colour changes, light and dark brown spots, blotching, necrosis, and shriveling were collected from soybean field before harvest of soybean cv. Dukat in the Tamis locality (South Banat District, Vojvodina Province: GPS: 44°56'12.936"N 20°43'24.216"E) in Serbia. The incidence of symptomatic seeds was estimated at 6.4%. Symptomatic soybean seeds were surface disinfected with 2% NaOCl for 2 min, rinsed in sterile water, dried on sterile filter paper, placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and were incubated at 25°C in the dark for 10 to 14 days. The identification of fungi at the genus level based on morphological characteristics revealed the presence of species of Macrophomina, Botrytis, Cercospora and Alternaria, which were previously reported as pathogens of soybean seed in Serbia (Krsmanovic et al. 2020). Also, seven white to slightly creamy colonies with yeast-like morphology were observed around seeds expressing discoloration and necrotic and sunken spots. Ten days later, microscopic observations of yeast-like colonies revealed the presence of globose budding cells (diameter of 20 to 28 µm) mostly single or rarely in short chains. Also, two to eight needle-shaped ascospores (52 to 80 µm in length) were arranged lengthwise in many cylindrical to naviculate asci (60 to 96 x 8 to 12, avg. 72.4 x 9.2 µm). Ascospores were with a unilateral, slender, flexuous, whip-like appendage. The morphology of the different fungal structures indicated that the pathogen was Eremothecium coryli (Pelgion) Kurtzman and it was further supported by molecular identification. Total DNA was extracted directly from fungal mycelium with a DNeasy Plant Mini Kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany) and PCR amplification performed with primers ITS1F (Gardes and Bruns 1993) and ITS4 (White et al. 1990). Sequence analysis of ITS region revealed that the Serbian isolate ND2/21 (GenBank Accession No. OL958602) shared the highest nucleotide identity of 100% with E. coryli isolate (Accession No. KY103387). For pathogenicity test, fresh soybean seeds (cv. Sava) were surface-disinfected with 2% NaOCl and rinsed in sterile water before inoculation. The seeds were pierced 3-4 times with a sterile insect pin through a drop of yeast suspension (concentration 106 ascospores/ml) of one selected single-spore isolate (ND2-21). Similarly, control seeds were pierced with sterile insect pins through a drop of sterile distilled water. Five inoculated seeds and control (five replicates per treatment) were arranged uniformly in a Petri dish (9 cm diameter) and incubated at 22 to 25°C in the dark and kept under >95% relative humidity during the first 48 h. Twenty days after inoculation, small brown necrotic lesions were visible on the soybean seeds. Re-isolation from symptomatic seeds on PDA dishes yielded yeast-like colonies with the same morphological characteristics as those used for inoculation, thus confirming Koch's postulates. The control seeds had no symptoms. This fungus is widely known as a pathogen of yeast spot disease on soybean seeds (Heinrichs et al. 1976; Kimura et al. 2008), but to our knowledge, it has never been reported in Serbia. Considering that invasive species Nezara viridula L. and Halyomorpha halys (STÅL, 1855), the vectors of this fungus, were reported in our country (Keresi et al. 2012; Seat 2015) and that their mass appearance has been documented in recent years (Konjevic et al. 2020), the presence of this pathogen has the potential to cause considerable damage and severe yield losses, resulting in significant economic impact on soybean production in Serbia.

In this paper, we will propose a perspective that patients with increasing symptoms of AD show a change in the awareness of subjective versus objective representative axis of reality thus consequently move to a more internal like perception of reality. This paradigm shift suggests that new insights into the dynamicity of the conscious representation of reality in the AD brain may give us new clues to the very early signs of memory and self-awareness impairment that originates from, in our view the microtubules. Tomato production worldwide is affected by numerous plant virus species. The early and accurate detection of viruses is a critical step for disease control. However, the simultaneous detection of the most known tomato viruses can be difficult because of the high number and diversity of tomato-infecting viruses. Here, we have identified four new viruses in Serbia by applying target-independent small RNA high-throughput sequencing (HTS). HTS was applied on pools of samples and separate samples, in total comprising 30 tomato samples that exhibited (severe) virus-like symptoms and were collected in Serbia during three annual surveys (2011 to 2013). These samples had previously tested negative for the presence of 16 tomato viruses using targeted detection methods. Three divergent complete genome sequences of Physostegia chlorotic mottled virus were obtained from different localities, indicating for the first time that this virus is widespread in Serbia and might represent an emergent viral pathogen of tomato. The tomato torrado virus was detected at one locality with devastating yield losses. The southern tomato virus was detected at two localities, and the spinach latent virus was detected at one locality. In addition, we detected the presence of one already-known virus in Serbia, the tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus. All the HTS results were subsequently confirmed by targeted detection methods. In this study, the successful application of post hoc HTS testing of a limited number of pooled samples resulted in the discovery of new viruses. Thus, our results encourage the use of HTS in research and diagnostic laboratories, including laboratories that have limited resources to resolve disease etiology.[Formula: see text] Copyright © 2021 The Author(s). BACKGROUND: Establishing a regional/national/international registry of patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is essential for both research and healthcare, because it enables collection of comprehensive real-life data from a large number of individuals. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe characteristics of COPD patients from the Serbian patient registry, and to investigate actual differences of those characteristics among the COPD phenotypes. METHODS: The Serbian registry of patients with COPD was established in 2018 at University of Kragujevac, Faculty of Medical Sciences, based on an online platform. Entry in the Registry was allowed for patients who were diagnosed with COPD according to the following criteria: symptoms of dyspnea, chronic cough or sputum production, history of risk factors for COPD and any degree of persistent airflow limitation diagnosed at spirometry. RESULTS: In the Serbian COPD registry B and D GOLD group were dominant, while among the COPD phenotypes, the most prevalent were non-exacerbators (49.4%) and then frequent exacerbators without chronic bronchitis (29.6%). The frequent exacerbator with chronic bronchitis phenotype was associated with low levels of bronchopulmonary function and absolute predominance of GOLD D group. Anxiety, depression, insomnia, hypertension and chronic heart failure were the most prevalent in the frequent exacerbator with chronic bronchitis phenotype; patients with this phenotype were also treated more frequently than other patients with a triple combination of the most effective inhaled anti-obstructive drugs: long-acting muscarinic antagonists, long-acting beta 2 agonists and corticosteroids. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the data from the Serbian registry are in line with those from other national registries, showing that frequent exacerbators with chronic bronchitis have worse bronchopulmonary function, more severe signs and symptoms, and more comorbidities (especially anxiety and depression) than other phenotypes. Other studies also confirmed worse quality of life and worse prognosis of the AE-CB phenotype, stressing importance of both preventive and appropriate therapeutic measures against chronic bronchitis.

BACKGROUND: Hyper Harmonized Hydroxyl Modified Fullerene Substance (3HFWC+ ) establishes hydrogen bonds with the surrounding water molecules and organizes them in clusters with the liquid crystalline state, similar to the properties of water surrounding the biomolecules. AIMS: To investigate the moisturizing properties of hyperharmonized fullerenol-3HFWC+ as an emulsion O/W ingredient on the skin. PATIENTS/METHODS: We have analyzed the reflexion of the blue light from the skin, in vivo, with different levels of moisturization and compared the influence of three groups of cosmetic products (with various active ingredients, 3HFWC+ or water in same percentage in the "vehiculum") on skin moisturization by measuring paramagnetic/diamagnetic properties by Optomagnetic Imaging Spectroscopy. RESULTS: Regenerating Cream and Body Lotion have shown statistically significant increase of diamagnetic features predominantly in all 3 types of creams, while the Hand Cream formulations have not shown statistically significant results after 4 weeks of treatment. Anti-aging cream with 3HFWC+ demonstrated statistically significant increase of paramagnetic properties of the skin (p+ /p- from 0.90 to 0.62) and showed beneficial effects on information transfer and water content in stratum corneum. CONCLUSION: Although it does not act as a classical moisturizing agent on the skin, 3HFWC+ can increase moisturization as a result of hydrogen bonds established among 3HFWC+ and water or biomolecules, liquid crystalline state of water in 3HFWC+ resembling the properties of water surrounding the biomolecules, and finally, liquid crystalline state of water in the products.

The planarity and the appropriate size of the porphyrin ring make porphyrin derivatives ideal ligands for stacking to guanine quartets and they could thus be used as anti-cancer drugs. In this contribution we analyzed complexes of a guanine quartet with a porphyrin molecule, magnesium porphyrin and calcium porphyrin. As magnesium and calcium ions are located in the center and above the porphyrin ring, respectively, the two metalloporphyrins are expected to have different impacts on the target. The optimized structures of the three systems revealed geometrical changes in the guanine quartet upon complexation: while stacking of porphyrin and magnesium porphyrin does not induce significant changes, calcium porphyrin considerably distorts the quartet's structure, which has significant implications for the binding properties among guanine molecules. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the systems perform small fluctuations around the equilibrium structures. The largest atom displacements are performed by the calcium ion. The interacting quantum atoms methodology enabled analysis of the binding properties in the studied complexes. Interestingly, although the proximity of the calcium ion is responsible for the quartet's pronounced deformation and weakening of guanine-guanine binding, it also enables stronger binding of the metal ion to the quartet, resulting in a more stable complex. These results imply that metalloporphyrin-like ligands with out-of-plane central ions might represent promising drug candidates in anti-tumor treatment.

Guanine self-assemblies are promising supramolecular platforms for optoelectronic applications. The study (Hua et al., J. Phys. Chem. C 2012, 116, 14,682-14,689) reported that alkaline cations cannot modulate the electronic absorption spectrum of G-quadruplexes, although a cation effect is observable during electronic relaxation due to different mobility of Na+ and K+ cations. In this work, we theoretically examined whether divalent Mg2+ and Ca2+ cations and hydration might shift excited charge-transfer states of a cation-templated stacked G-quartet to the absorption red tail. Our results showed that earth alkaline cations blue-shifted nπ* states and stabilized charge-transfer ππ* states relative to those of complexes with alkaline cations, although the number of charge-separation states was not significantly modified. Earth alkaline cations were not able to considerably increase the amount of charge-transfer states below the Lb excitonic states. Hydration shifted charge-transfer states of the Na+-coordinated G-octet to the absorption red tail, although this part of the spectrum was still dominated by monomer-like excitations. We found G-octet electron detachment states at low excitation energies in aqueous solution. These states were distributed over a broad range of excitation energies and could be responsible for oxidative damage observed upon UV irradiation of biological G-quadruplexes.

The linker of the endoglucanase from Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris ((PT)12) has a specific sequence, a repeating proline-threonine motif. In order to understand its role, it has been compared to a regular sequence linker, in this work-the cellobiohydrolase 2 from Trichoderma reesei (CBH2). Elastic properties of the two linkers have been estimated by calculating free energy profile along the linker length from an enhanced sampling molecular dynamics simulation. The (PT)12 exhibits more pronounced elastic behaviour than CBH2. The PT repeating motif results in a two-mode energy profile which could be very useful in the enzyme motions along the substrate during hydrolytic catalysis.

The geometries of the contacts between monosaccharides and aromatic rings of amino acids found in X-ray crystallography structures, in the Protein Data Bank (PDB), were analyzed, while the energies of the interactions were calculated using quantum chemical method. We found 1913 sugar/aromatic ring contacts, 1054 of them (55%) with CH/π interactions and 859 of them (45%) without CH/π interactions. We showed that only the carbohydrate/aromatic contacts with CH/π interactions are preferentially parallel and enable sliding in the plane parallel to aromatic ring. The calculated interaction energies in systems with CH/π interactions are in the range from -1.7 kcal/mol to -6.8 kcal/mol, while in the systems without CH/π interactions are in the range -0.2 to -3.2 kcal/mol. Hence, the binding that does not include CH/π interactions, can also be important for aromatic amino acid and carbohydrate binding processes, since some of these interactions can be as strong as the CH/π interactions. At the same time, these interactions can be weak enough to enable releasing of small carbohydrate fragments after the enzymatic reaction. The analysis of the protein-substrate patterns showed that every second or third carbohydrate unit in long substrates stacks with protein aromatic amino acids.

Amyloids are proteins of a cross-ß structure found as deposits in several diseases and also in normal tissues (nails, spider net, silk). Aromatic amino acids are frequently found in amyloid deposits. Although they are not indispensable, aromatic amino acids, phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan, enhance significantly the kinetics of formation and thermodynamic stability, while tape or ribbon-like morphology is represented in systems with experimentally detected π-π interactions between aromatic rings. Analysis of geometries and energies of the amyloid PDB structures indicate the prevalence of aromatic-nonaromatic interactions and confirm that aromatic-aromatic interactions are not crucial for the amyloid formation.

RESUMEN

Water molecules from crystal structures archived in the CSD show a relatively large range both in the bond angle and bond lengths. High level ab initio calculations at the CCSD(T)/CBS level predicted a possibility for energetically low-cost (±1 kcal mol-1) changes of the bond angle and bond lengths in a wide range, from 96.4° to 112.8° and from 0.930 Å to 0.989 Å, respectively.
