Viticulture is characterized by substantial pesticide applications, impacting natural enemies. New pest control strategies and management of plant diversity into agrosystems acting as reservoirs of natural enemies are assumed to limit pesticide use. Various studies support this hypothesis but gaps exist on the effect of diversification on Phytoseiidae mites, generalist predators reported as prevalent and efficient natural enemies in vineyards. This study focuses on the effect of cover crop management (no cover crop, spontaneous cover crops with or without agroforestry) and grape variety (resistant cv. Artaban and cv. Syrah) on predatory mites and prey communities, in a newly planted experimental vineyard in South-East France. Samplings were carried out three times a year on vine, cover crops, and co-planted trees. Phytoseiidae, Tydeiidae, Eriophyidae mites and thrips were characterized. Nine Phytoseiidae species were identified on vine, the main ones being Kampimodromus aberrans, Typhlodromus exhilaratus, Phytoseius finitimus and Euseius gallicus. Kampimodromus aberrans was prevalent on the cv. Syrah, highlighting a strong effect of variety. The low unexpected effect of system management observed outcome could be due to several factors, such as the experimental plot size or the influence of vine stress on Phytoseiidae communities in vines with cover crops. All phytoseiid species present on vine were identifed at least once on cover crops and co-planted trees, suggesting their potential role as reservoirs. Further studies should be performed investigating the evolution of communities in this newly-planted experimental system, as well as potential differences in trophic network interactions.

During subaperture tool grinding and polishing, overlaps of the tool influence function can result in undesirable mid-spatial frequency (MSF) errors in the form of surface ripples, which are often corrected using a smoothing polishing step. In this study, flat multi-layer smoothing polishing tools are designed and tested to simultaneously (1) reduce or remove MSF errors, (2) minimize surface figure degradation, and (3) maximize the material removal rate. A time-dependent convergence model in which spatial material removal varies with a workpiece-tool height mismatch, combined with a finite element mechanical analysis to determine the interface contact pressure distribution, was developed to evaluate various smoothing tool designs as a function of tool material properties, thicknesses, pad textures, and displacements. An improvement in smoothing tool performance is achieved when the gap pressure constant, h¯ (which describes the inverse rate at which the pressure drops with a workpiece-tool height mismatch), is minimized for smaller spatial scale length surface features (namely, MSF errors) and maximized for large spatial scale length features (i.e., surface figure). Five specific smoothing tool designs were experimentally evaluated. A two-layer smoothing tool using a thin, grooved IC1000 polyurethane pad (with a high elastic modulus, E p a d =360M P a), thicker blue foam (with an intermediate modulus, E f o a m =5.3M P a) underlayer, and an optimized displacement (d t=1m m) provided the best overall performance (namely, high MSF error convergence, minimal surface figure degradation, and high material removal rate).

The tool influence function (TIF) during sub-aperture belt-on-wheel polishing has been evaluated as a function of various process conditions (belt use/wear, dwell time, displacement, belt velocity, and wheel modulus and diameter) on fused silica glass workpieces using C e O 2 polishing media. TIF spots are circular or elliptical in shape with a largely flat bottom character. The volumetric removal rate varies significantly with belt use (or wear), stabilizing after ∼15m i n of use. A modified Preston model, where the pressure dependence is adjusted using a different scaling of the wheel modulus (E w0.5), largely predicts the volumetric removal rate over the range of process conditions evaluated. The relatively high volumetric removal rate of 30-60m m 3/h using a fixed C e O 2-in-resin-host belt offers a rapid, and hence, more economical, initial polish of aspheric and freeform optics.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with Down syndrome (DS) are two to three times more likely to be obese than their typically developing peers. When preventing or treating obesity, it is useful for clinicians to understand an individual's energy intake needs. Predictive resting energy expenditure (REE) equations are often recommended for general use in energy intake recommendations; however, these predictive equations have not been validated in youth with DS. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of seven commonly used predictive equations for estimating REE in adolescents who are typically developing to REE measured by indirect calorimetry in adolescents with DS. METHODS: Adolescents with DS participated in a 90-min laboratory visit before 10:00 a.m. after a 12-h overnight fast and a 48-h abstention from aerobic exercise. REE was measured via indirect calorimetry, and estimated REE was derived using the Institute of Medicine, Molnar, Muller and World Health Organization equations. Mean differences between the measured and predicted REE for each equation were evaluated with equivalency testing, and P-values were adjusted for multiple comparisons using the Holm method. RESULTS: Forty-six adolescents with DS (age: 15.5 ± 1.7 years, 47.8% female, 73.9% non-Hispanic White) completed the REE assessment. Average measured REE was 1459.5 ± 267.8 kcal/day, and the Institute of Medicine equations provided the most accurate prediction of REE with a 1.7 ± 11.2% (13.9 ± 170.3 kcal/day) overestimation. This prediction was not statistically different from the measured REE [P-value = 0.582; 95% confidence interval (CI): -64.5, 36.7], and the difference between the measured and predicted REE was statistically equivalent to zero (P-value = 0.024; 90% CI: -56.1, 28.3). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the Institute of Medicine equation may be useful in predicting REE in adolescents with DS. Future research should confirm these results in a larger sample and determine the utility of the Institute of Medicine equation for energy intake recommendations during a weight management intervention.

BACKGROUND: Invasive lobular breast cancer (ILC) is the second most common type of breast cancer after invasive breast cancer of no special type (NST), representing up to 15% of all breast cancers. DESIGN: Latest data on ILC are presented, focusing on diagnosis, molecular make-up according to the European Society for Medical Oncology Scale for Clinical Actionability of molecular Targets (ESCAT) guidelines, treatment in the early and metastatic setting and ILC-focused clinical trials. RESULTS: At the imaging level, magnetic resonance imaging-based and novel positron emission tomography/computed tomography-based techniques can overcome the limitations of currently used imaging techniques for diagnosing ILC. At the pathology level, E-cadherin immunohistochemistry could help improving inter-pathologist agreement. The majority of patients with ILC do not seem to benefit as much from (neo-)adjuvant chemotherapy as patients with NST, although chemotherapy might be required in a subset of high-risk patients. No differences in treatment efficacy are seen for anti-human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) therapies in the adjuvant setting and cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 inhibitors in the metastatic setting. The clinical utility of the commercially available prognostic gene expression-based tests is unclear for patients with ILC. Several ESCAT alterations differ in frequency between ILC and NST. Germline BRCA1 and PALB2 alterations are less frequent in patients with ILC, while germline CDH1 (gene coding for E-cadherin) alterations are more frequent in patients with ILC. Somatic HER2 mutations are more frequent in ILC, especially in metastases (15% ILC versus 5% NST). A high tumour mutational burden, relevant for immune checkpoint inhibition, is more frequent in ILC metastases (16%) than in NST metastases (5%). Tumours with somatic inactivating CDH1 mutations may be vulnerable for treatment with ROS1 inhibitors, a concept currently investigated in early and metastatic ILC. CONCLUSION: ILC is a unique malignancy based on its pathological and biological features leading to differences in diagnosis as well as in treatment response, resistance and targets as compared to NST.

Background: We have addressed health equity attained by fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) and primary colonoscopy (PCOL), respectively, in the randomised controlled screening trial SCREESCO conducted in Sweden. Methods: We analysed data on the individuals recruited between March 2014, and March 2020, within the study registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02078804. Swedish population registry data on educational level, household income, country of birth, and marital status were linked to each 60-year-old man and woman who had been randomised to two rounds of FIT 2 years apart (n = 60,123) or once-only PCOL (n = 30,390). Furthermore, we geo-coded each study individual to his/her residential area and assessed neighbourhood-level data on deprivation, proportion of non-Western immigrants, population density, and average distance to healthcare center for colonoscopy. We estimated adjusted associations of each covariate with the colonoscopy attendance proportion out of all invited to respective arms; ie, the preferred outcome for addressing health equity. In the FIT arm, the test uptake and the colonoscopy uptake among the test positives were considered as the secondary outcomes. Findings: We found a marked socioeconomic gradient in the colonoscopy attendance proportion in the PCOL arm (adjusted odds ratio [95% credibility interval] between the groups categorised in the highest vs. lowest national quartile for household income: 2·20 [2·01-2·42]) in parallel with the gradient in the test uptake of the FIT × 2 screening (2·08 [1·96-2·20]). The corresponding gradient in the colonoscopy attendance proportion out of all invited to FIT was less pronounced (1·29 [1·16-1·42]), due to higher proportions of FIT positives in socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. Interpretation: The unintended risk of exacerbating inequalities in health by organised colorectal cancer screening may be higher with a PCOL strategy than a FIT strategy, despite parallel socioeconomic gradients in uptake. During sub-aperture tool polishing of glass optics, mid-spatial surface ripples are generated because of material removal non-uniformities during tool linear translation (resulting in feed ripples) and tool pathway step overlaps (resulting in pitch ripples). A variety of tool influence function (TIF) spots, trenches, and patches were created to understand and minimize such ripples on fused silica workpieces after polishing with cerium oxide slurry using a rotating hemispherical pad-foam tool. The feed ripple amplitude can be decreased by reducing the non-uniformities in the pad texture and/or by minimizing a derived feed ripple metric (rf=Vmax0.5Vf/Rt) via adjustments in processing parameters. Pitch ripples can be minimized by reducing relative step distance to spot radius ratio (xs/at) and by achieving a flat bottom trench shape cross section or by reducing the material removal per pass. Using the combined methods, an overall ripple error of ∼1.2nm rms has been achieved.

The MEGANE instrument onboard the MMX mission will acquire gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy data of Phobos to determine the elemental composition of the martian moon and provide key constraints on its origin. To produce accurate compositional results, the irregular shape of Phobos and its proximity to Mars must be taken into account during the analysis of MEGANE data. The MEGANE team is adapting the Small Body Mapping Tool (SBMT) to handle gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy investigations, building on the demonstrated record of success of the SBMT being applied to scientific investigations on other spacecraft missions of irregularly shaped bodies. This is the first application of the SBMT to a gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy dataset, and the native, three-dimensional foundation of the SBMT is well suited to MEGANE's needs. In addition, the SBMT will enable comparisons between the MEGANE datasets and other datasets of the martian moons, including data from previous spacecraft missions and MMX's multi-instrument suite.

Common variable immunodeficiency disorders (CVID) are multi-system disorders where target organ damage is mediated by infective, autoimmune and inflammatory processes. Bronchiectasis is probably the most common disabling complication of CVID. The risk factors for bronchiectasis in CVID patients are incompletely understood. The New Zealand CVID study (NZCS) is a nationwide longitudinal observational study of adults, which commenced in 2006. In this analysis, the prevalence and risk factors for bronchiectasis were examined in the NZCS. After informed consent, clinical and demographic data were obtained with an interviewer-assisted questionnaire. Linked electronic clinical records and laboratory results were also reviewed. Statistical methods were applied to determine if variables such as early-onset disease, delay in diagnosis and increased numbers of infections were associated with greater risk of bronchiectasis. One hundred and seven adult patients with a diagnosis of CVID are currently enrolled in the NZCS, comprising approximately 70% of patients known to have CVID in New Zealand. Fifty patients (46·7%) had radiologically proven bronchiectasis. This study has shown that patients with compared to those without bronchiectasis have an increased mortality at a younger age. CVID patients with bronchiectasis had a greater number of severe infections consequent to early-onset disease and delayed diagnosis. Indigenous Maori have a high prevalence of CVID and a much greater burden of bronchiectasis compared to New Zealand Europeans. Diagnostic latency has not improved during the study period. Exposure to large numbers of infections because of early-onset disease and delayed diagnosis was associated with an increased risk of bronchiectasis. Earlier diagnosis and treatment of CVID may reduce the risk of bronchiectasis and premature death in some patients.

The influence of workpiece curvature on the tool influence function spot during polishing of fused silica glass with cerium oxide slurry, while using a rotating hemispherical pad-foam tool for a wide variety of process conditions (tool displacement, inclination angle, and rotation rate), has been investigated. (Workpiece curvature ranged from 500 mm radius concave to 43 mm radius convex.) The TIF spot decreases in diameter and increases in the peak removal rate on more convex workpieces. In contrast, the TIF spot increases both in diameter and peak removal rate on more concave workpieces. For the range of workpiece curvatures investigated, both the spot size and the peak removal rate changed significantly, as much as 2 times. An elastic sphere-sphere contact mechanics model, which utilizes both a modified displacement (that leads to a change in the applied load) as well as a mismatch factor (that influences the pressure distribution shape), has been developed. The model was validated using both offline load-displacement measurements and finite-element analysis simulations. The model quantitatively describes the measured change in the relative contact diameter and relative pressure distribution, as well as semiquantitively describes the change in the relative volumetric removal rate on a large variety of TIF spots. The change in the volumetric removal rate for convex workpieces is a result of the balance between a decreasing spot size (reducing removal) and an increasing peak pressure (increasing removal), which usually results in relatively small changes in volumetric removal. In the case of concave workpieces, the volumetric removal rate change is also governed by a similar balance, but the spot size increase contribution dominates, resulting in a significant increase in volumetric removal rate. Understanding these trends can enable methods to add greater determinism during the fabrication of freeform optics by adjusting polishing parameters (such as dwell time) while the tool translates along a workpiece surface with different local curvatures.

Sub-aperture tool polishing of precision optics requires a detailed understanding of the local material removal [tool influence function (TIF)] at the contact spot between the workpiece and tool to achieve high removal determinism and hence precision of the optic relative to the desired/design surface figure. In this study, the mechanisms influencing and the quantitative prediction of the removal rate and shape of TIF spots during polishing of fused silica glass with cerium oxide slurry using a rotating hemispherical pad-foam tool for a wide variety of process conditions (including tool properties, kinematics, and applied displacements) are investigated. The TIF volumetric removal rate can be estimated utilizing the average relative velocity and contact area using a simple analytical model. In addition, stability of the volumetric removal rate for fixed process conditions is shown to be greatly dependent on the pad preparation and amount of tool use (affecting both pad topography and slurry buildup), whose general behavior shows an increase in removal rate followed by stabilization with polishing time. The determination of the TIF removal shape is more complex. An extended version of the Preston removal model is developed to explain a comprehensive set of measured TIF removal shapes to within ∼22%. This model incorporates a number of phenomena impacting the TIF removal shape including: (a) temporal and spatial dependent relative velocity between the workpiece and tool; (b) an elastic mechanics based, as well as hydrodynamic, pressure distribution; (c) a spatially dependent friction coefficient possibly caused by both reduced slurry replenishment in low velocity regions and pad slurry islands (100 µm scale) and porosity (millimeter scale); and (d) a shear-based removal mechanism on the periphery of the contact spot.

INTRODUCTION: Peer review is frequently incorporated within radiographer reporting services. The aim of this study is to establish peer review systems used for radiograph reports provided by reporting radiographers in London. METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey of NHS diagnostic imaging departments was performed. Reporting radiographer demographics (number, frequency of reporting, scope of practice) and systems used to provide peer review of radiograph reports (review frequency, case selection, volume, outcome measure, practitioner performing the review) were collected. RESULTS: Thirteen eligible responses were received (61.9% response rate). Variability was found between Trusts in the number of reporting radiographers, frequency of reporting sessions and scope of practice. Most Trusts (9 of 13, 69.2%) have active peer review systems for radiographer reporting. All peer review systems use random case selection, most often performed on a monthly basis. Both a fixed number or a percentage of cases reported were used, with true positive, true negative, false positive, false negative the most frequent outcome measure. Of the 12 Trusts that have or are planning a peer system, all currently or plan to use reporting radiographers to conduct the review, with five (41.2%) also using consultant radiologists. CONCLUSION: Peer review of radiographer reporting is common in London NHS Trusts although there is variation in the methods used. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Radiographer reports frequently undergo peer review. Standardisation of reporting radiographer peer review systems should be considered, and a standardised systematic peer review system has been proposed.

OBJECTIVES: Radiographer reporting is an essential component of imaging across the United Kingdom. Since the previous policy and practice guidance in 2004 the role and contribution of reporting radiographers has changed significantly. The move to imaging networks further reinforces the need for consistency in scope of practice and clinical governance for radiographer reporting. KEY FINDINGS: This guidance provides a consistent, evidence-based template for planning a reporting service, resourcing, clinical governance, preceptorship, volume and frequency of reporting, a peer learning framework and expected standards. CONCLUSION: Developed for North Central and East London, this framework and standards will help reduce unwarranted variation. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Consistency in practice could help maximise the contribution of radiographer reporting.

INTRODUCTION: Apples, an important contributor to total dietary phenolic intake, are associated with cardiovascular health benefits. Determining the phenolic composition of apples, their individual variation across varieties, and the phenolic compounds present in plasma after apple consumption is integral to understanding the effects of apple phenolics on cardiovascular health. METHODS: Using liquid chromatography we quantified five important polyphenols and one phenolic acid with potential health benefits: quercetin glycosides, (-)-epicatechin, procyanidin B2, phloridzin, anthocyanins, and chlorogenic acid, in the skin and flesh of 19 apple varieties and 72 breeding selections from the Australian National Apple Breeding program. Furthermore, we measured the phenolic compounds in the plasma of 30 individuals post-consumption of an identified phenolic-rich apple, Cripp's Pink. RESULTS: Considerable variation in concentration of phenolic compounds was found between genotypes: quercetin (mean ± SD: 16.1 ± 5.9, range: 5.8-30.1 mg per 100 g); (-)-epicatechin (mean ± SD: 8.6 ± 5.8, range: 0.2-19.8 mg per 100 g); procyanidin B2 (mean ± SD: 11.5 ± 6.6, range: 0.5-26.5 mg per 100 g); phloridzin (mean ± SD: 1.1 ± 0.6, range: 0.3-4.3 mg per 100 g); anthocyanins (mean ± SD: 1.8 ± 4.4, range: 0-40.8 mg per 100 g); and chlorogenic acid (mean ± SD: 11.3 ± 9.9, range: 0.4-56.0 mg per 100 g). All phenolic compounds except chlorogenic acid were more concentrated in the skin compared with flesh. We observed a significant increase, with wide variation, in 14 phenolic compounds in plasma post-consumption of a phenolic-rich apple. CONCLUSION: This information makes an important contribution to understanding the potential health benefits of apples.

BACKGROUND: Patients with rectal cancer who present with sarcopenia (low muscle mass) are at significantly greater risk of postoperative complications and reduction in disease-free survival. We performed a subanalysis of a randomised controlled study [the REx trial; www.isrctn.com ; 62859294] to assess the potential of prehabilitation to modify muscle mass in patients having neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NACRT). METHODS: Patients scheduled for NACRT, then potentially curative surgery (August 2014-March 2016) had baseline physical assessment and psoas muscle mass measurement (total psoas index using computed tomography-based measurements). Participants were randomised to either the intervention (13-17-week telephone-guided graduated walking programme) or control group (standard care). Follow-up testing was performed 1-2 weeks before surgery. RESULTS: The 44 patients had a mean age of 66.8 years (SD 9.6) and were male (64%); white (98%); American Society of Anesthesiologists class 2 (66%); co-morbid (58%); overweight (72%) (body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2). At baseline, 14% were sarcopenic. At follow-up, 13 (65%) of patients in the prehabilitation group had increased muscle mass versus 7 (35%) that experienced a decrease. Conversely, 16 (67%) controls experienced a decrease in muscle mass and 8 (33%) showed an increase. An adjusted linear regression model estimated a mean treatment difference in Total Psoas Index of 40.2mm2/m2 (95% CI - 3.4 to 83.7) between groups in change from baseline (p = 0.07). CONCLUSIONS: Prehabilitation improved muscle mass in patients with rectal cancer who had NACRT. These results need to be explored in a larger trial to determine if the poorer short- and long-term patient outcomes associated with low muscle mass can be minimised by prehabilitation.

RESUMEN

A novel, to the best of our knowledge, method of wet chemical etching of sapphire workpieces (such as optics, wafers, windows, and cones), called the sapphire advanced mitigation process (or sapphire AMP), has been developed that exposes sub-surface mechanical damage created during the optical fabrication process and significantly enhances the surface laser damage resistance ($ \gt {2{\times}}$>2×) and mechanical strength (up to $\sim{2.6{\times}}$∼2.6×). Sapphire AMP involves first treating the workpiece with a mixture of sulfuric and phosphoric acid $([{\rm H_{2}{\rm SO_{4}}}]:[{\rm H_{3}{\rm PO_{4}}}]=1:3)$([H2SO4]:[H3PO4]=1:3) at 220°C, followed with phosphoric acid at 160°C, then with sodium hydroxide base (NaOH) and surfactant at 40°C, and finally with a high-pressure deionized water spray rinse. Sapphire AMP has been demonstrated on both A- and C-plane sapphire workpieces. The mechanism of this etch process involves the reaction of the sapphire $({\rm Al_{2}}{\rm O_{3}})$(Al2O3) surface with sulfuric acid $({\rm H_{2}}{\rm SO_{4}})$(H2SO4) forming aluminum sulfate $[{{\rm Al}_2}{({{\rm SO}_4})_3}]$[Al2(SO4)3], which has low solubility. The high phosphoric acid content in the first and second steps of sapphire AMP results in the efficient conversion of ${{\rm Al}_2}{({{\rm SO}_4})_3}$Al2(SO4)3 to aluminum phosphate $({\rm AlPO_{4}})$(AlPO4), which is very soluble, greatly reducing reaction product redeposition on the workpiece surface. Sapphire AMP is shown to expose sub-surface mechanical damage on the sapphire surface created during the grinding and polishing processes, whose etched morphology has either isotropic or anisotropic evolution depending on the nature of the initial surface damage. Sapphire AMP was also designed to remove the key known surface, laser absorbing precursors (namely, foreign chemical impurities, the fracture surface layer of preexisting sub-surface damage, and reaction product or foreign species redeposition or precipitation). Static and sliding indention induced surface microfractures on sapphire are shown after sapphire AMP to have a significant decrease in the fast photoluminescence intensity (a known metric for measuring the degree of laser damaging absorbing precursors). In addition, the onset of laser damage (at 351 nm 3 ns) on sapphire AMP treated workpieces was shown to increase in fluence from $\sim{4}$∼4 to $ \gt {9}.{5}\;{{\rm J/cm}^2}$>9.5J/cm2. Finally, biaxial ball-on-ring mechanical tests on sapphire disks showed an increase in the failure stress from 340 MPa (with pre-existing 28 µm flaws) to $\sim{900}\;{\rm MPa}$∼900MPa after sapphire AMP, which is attributed to the blunting of the surface microfractures.

Transient hypogammaglobulinaemia of infancy (THI) is a relatively rare disorder where there is an exaggeration of the physiological nadir of immunoglobulin (Ig)G between loss of transplacentally acquired maternal IgG and production by the infant. Patients may be vulnerable to infections during the period of hypogammaglobulinaemia. The precise time to recovery in all infants is currently unknown. We sought to determine the clinical features and time-course of recovery for patients with THI. We reviewed our experience with THI over the last three decades in order to describe clinical and laboratory features, as well as the time-course of recovery. Forty-seven patients were identified with THI. Only thirty-seven per cent remitted by 4 years of age, while some patients did not recover until the third or fourth decade. In keeping with previous studies, the majority (25 of 47) presented with recurrent infections, nine had a family history of immunodeficiency and 13 had adverse reactions to food as their dominant clinical manifestation. Chronic tonsillitis developed in 10 patients and symptoms improved following surgery. The group with food allergies recovered sooner than those presenting with infections or with a family history immunodeficiency. Eight patients failed to respond to at least one routine childhood vaccine. Two have IgA deficiency and four individuals recovering in adolescence and adulthood continue to have borderline/low IgG levels. None have progressed to common variable immunodeficiency disorders (CVID). THI is a misnomer, as the majority do not recover in infancy. Recovery from THI can extend into adulthood. THI must be considered in the differential diagnosis of adolescents or young adults presenting with primary hypogammaglobulinemia.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to assess modifiable risk factors in patients at high risk for colorectal cancer (CRC) and their experience of lifestyle advice. METHODS: A questionnaire study was conducted in high-risk CRC patients attending for surveillance colonoscopy. Current lifestyle behaviours [smoking, alcohol, diet (fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, red meat, processed meat), physical activity and bodyweight] related to CRC were ascertained, and experience on receiving, seeking and desire for advice was queried. RESULTS: In total, 385 study invitations were sent and 208 (54%) questionnaires were returned. The majority of participants (72%) were estimated to have a body mass index beyond the healthy range, 89% achieved a fibre score indicative of a low plant-based diet and 91% reported eating processed meat. Overall, 36% were achieving at least four recommendations and 2% were adhering to all recommendations examined. The main area in which participants reported receiving advice on was body weight (33%) and 31% reported that they had personally sought information on this topic, although the data suggest that 72% of people may benefit from such guidance. Fewer participants reported receiving (18-26%) and seeking (15-17%) dietary advice on fruits, vegetables and wholegrains. Many participants said they would find lifestyle information useful, notably in relation to body fatness (43%) and physical activity (38%). CONCLUSIONS: The development of a process for supporting lifestyle change in this patient group, comprising individuals who are already engaging in positive health practices (regular colonoscopy surveillance), could usefully be identified and tested.
