Objectives: Nicotine usage is known to increase postoperative complications; however, studies show that the general population believes that non-tobacco nicotine delivery devices are a safer option compared to tobacco-based nicotine products. This study evaluates postoperative complications between non-tobacco nicotine dependent and non-nicotine dependent patients for intramedullary nailing in intertrochanteric femur fractures. Methods: Utilizing the TriNetX database, we retrospectively examined postoperative outcomes in patients aged 18 to 90 who underwent intramedullary nailing for intertrochanteric femur fractures between November 21, 2013, and November 21, 2023. Two cohorts were analyzed: Cohort A comprised nicotine-dependent patients without tobacco product usage (e.g. cigarettes or chewing tobacco) and Cohort B consisted of patients without any nicotine dependence. Propensity matching was performed for BMI, type 2 diabetes, alcohol/substance abuse, socioeconomic status, and demographic factors. Outcomes assessed included mortality, sepsis, pneumonia, revision, dehiscence, pulmonary embolism, nonunion, and deep vein thrombosis within 1 day to 6 months post-treatment. Results: A total of 2,041 non-tobacco nicotine dependent patients were matched with 22,872 non-nicotine dependent patients. Non-tobacco nicotine dependent patients experienced higher associated risk for numerous postoperative complications compared to non-nicotine dependent patients including increased risk for mortality within 6 months postoperatively (RR 1.386, 10.7% vs 7.7%, P = 0.001), sepsis (RR 1.459, 4.4% vs 3.0%, P = 0.027), and pneumonia (RR 1.751, 5.8% vs 3.3%, P = 0.001). Conclusions: Non-tobacco nicotine dependence increases postoperative complications for patients undergoing intramedullary nailing for intertrochanteric femur fractures. Our findings support the need for development of perioperative nicotine cessation guidelines for non-tobacco nicotine users. Level of evidence: Level III, Prognostic.

In mammalian hearts myocardial infarction produces a permanent collagen-rich scar. Conversely, in zebrafish a collagen-rich scar forms but is completely resorbed as the myocardium regenerates. The formation of cross-links in collagen hinders its degradation but cross-linking has not been well characterized in zebrafish hearts. Here, a library of fluorescent probes to quantify collagen oxidation, the first step in collagen cross-link (CCL) formation, was developed. Myocardial injury in mice or zebrafish resulted in similar dynamics of collagen oxidation in the myocardium in the first month after injury. However, during this time, mature CCLs such as pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline developed in the murine infarcts but not in the zebrafish hearts. High levels of newly oxidized collagen were still seen in murine scars with mature CCLs. These data suggest that fibrogenesis remains dynamic, even in mature scars, and that the absence of mature CCLs in zebrafish hearts may facilitate their ability to regenerate.

Placerias hesternus, a Late Triassic dicynodont, is one of the last megafaunal synapsids of the Mesozoic. The species has a tusk-like projection on its maxillary bone, known as the caniniform process. This process has been hypothesized to be sexually dimorphic since the 1950s, however this claim has not been thoroughly investigated quantitatively. Here, we examined maxillae, premaxillae, quadrates, and fibulae from a single population from the Placerias Quarry in the Blue Mesa Member of the Chinle Formation, near St. Johns, Arizona, USA to determine if the caniniform process is dimorphic. We made a total of 25 measurements from the four bones and used a maximum likelihood framework to compare the fit of unimodal versus bimodal distributions for each set of measurements. Our results from complete maxillae reveal that the caniniform process has two distinct morphs, with a shorter and longer form. This interpretation is substantiated both by strong statistical support for bimodal distribution of caniniform lengths, and by clustering analysis that clearly distinguishes two morphs for the maxillae. Clustering analysis also shows support for potential dimorphism in the shape of the quadrate. However, no measurements from elements other than the maxilla have a strong likelihood of bimodal distribution. These results support the long-standing hypothesis that the caniniform in Placerias was dimorphic. Alternative explanations to sexual dimorphism that could account for the dimorphism among these fossils include the presence of juveniles in the sample or time-averaged sampling of a chronospecies, but both have been previously rejected for the Placerias Quarry population. The lack of strong dimorphism in non-maxilla elements and increased variation in caniniform length of the large-caniniform morph suggest that the caniniform is a secondary sexual trait, possibly used in intraspecific competition.

Introduction With the growing acceptance of transgender individuals, the number of gender affirmation surgeries has increased. Transgender individuals face elevated depression rates, leading to an increase in suicide ideation and attempts. This study evaluates the risk of suicide or self-harm associated with gender affirmation procedures. Methods This retrospective study utilized de-identified patient data from the TriNetX (TriNetX, LLC, Cambridge, MA) database, involving 56 United States healthcare organizations and over 90 million patients. The study involved four cohorts: cohort A, adults aged 18-60 who had gender-affirming surgery and an emergency visit (N = 1,501); cohort B, control group of adults with emergency visits but no gender-affirming surgery (N = 15,608,363); and cohort C, control group of adults with emergency visits, tubal ligation or vasectomy, but no gender-affirming surgery (N = 142,093). Propensity matching was applied to cohorts A and C. Data from February 4, 2003, to February 4, 2023, were analyzed to examine suicide attempts, death, self-harm, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within five years of the index event. A secondary analysis involving a control group with pharyngitis, referred to as cohort D, was conducted to validate the results from cohort C. Results Individuals who underwent gender-affirming surgery had a 12.12-fold higher suicide attempt risk than those who did not (3.47% vs. 0.29%, RR 95% CI 9.20-15.96, p < 0.0001). Compared to the tubal ligation/vasectomy controls, the risk was 5.03-fold higher before propensity matching and remained significant at 4.71-fold after matching (3.50% vs. 0.74%, RR 95% CI 2.46-9.024, p < 0.0001) for the gender affirmation patients with similar results with the pharyngitis controls. Conclusion Gender-affirming surgery is significantly associated with elevated suicide attempt risks, underlining the necessity for comprehensive post-procedure psychiatric support.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use elevates the incidence of postoperative complications and remains a key modifiable risk factor of perioperative surgical optimization. It remains unclear whether non-tobacco nicotine dependence confers an increased risk of surgical complications. This study evaluates postoperative complications in patients with non-tobacco nicotine dependence for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). METHODS: We queried the TriNetX health database using Current Procedural Terminology and International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) codes and identified two cohorts for evaluation. Cohort A was defined as patients who had a TKA; had a dependence on nicotine; did not have nicotine dependence to cigarettes, chewing tobacco, other tobacco products; and were between the ages of 35 and 90 years. Cohort B was defined as patients who had a TKA but did not have a dependence on nicotine or a personal history of nicotine dependence and were between the ages of 35 and 90 years. RESULTS: This study analyzed a total of 10,594 non-tobacco nicotine-dependent patients and 175,079 non-dependent patients who underwent TKA. In the analysis of propensity-matched cohorts, non-tobacco nicotine-dependent patients demonstrated an increased rate of various postoperative complications within 90 days. Dependent patients saw a significantly increased risk of infection after a procedure (P < 0.001), deep vein thrombosis (P < 0.001), pulmonary embolism (P < 0.001), sepsis (P = 0.0065), and prosthetic joint infection (P = 0.0361) and a higher 3-year revision rate (P = 0.0084). DISCUSSION: Non-tobacco nicotine dependence demonstrated an increased associated risk of postoperative surgical complications for patients undergoing TKA. Orthopaedic surgeons should consider evaluating non-tobacco nicotine dependence within their surgical optimization protocol. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, Prognostic.

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of superior labral anterior to posterior (SLAP) tears remains controversial. Current management utilizes 2 well-established procedures: biceps tenodesis and SLAP repair. This study evaluates the complications associated with arthroscopic SLAP repair vs. an open or arthroscopic biceps tenodesis to further elucidate optimal surgical management. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, the TriNetX database was utilized to evaluate patients who underwent repair of SLAP lesions (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision code: S43.43) from May 15, 2003, to May 15, 2023. Three patient cohorts were evaluated: those who underwent arthroscopic SLAP repair (Current Procedural Terminology [CPT] code: 29807), those who underwent arthroscopic biceps tenodesis (CPT code: 29828), and those who underwent open tenodesis of the biceps (CPT code: 23430). Cohorts were propensity matched for type 2 diabetes, nicotine dependence, alcohol-related disorders, body mass index, and demographic factors such as age at event, ethnicity, race, and sex. The outcomes evaluated were disruption of surgical wound, deep vein thrombosis, mononeuropathy of upper limb, shoulder contusion, humeral fracture, sepsis, deceased, acute postoperative pain, revision, shoulder stiffness, and rotator cuff strain. All outcomes were evaluated within 1 year postprocedure. RESULTS: A total of 11,081 arthroscopic SLAP repairs, 9960 arthroscopic biceps tenodesis, and 9420 open biceps tenodesis were matched. Compared with patients who underwent arthroscopic biceps tenodesis, those who underwent arthroscopic SLAP repair were 1.8 times more likely to undergo revision (2.9% vs. 1.6%, P < .0001). Compared with those who underwent open biceps tenodesis, patients who had SLAP repair performed were 1.4 times more likely to undergo revision (3.1% vs. 2.3%, P = .013) and 1.6 times more likely to have a subsequent rotator cuff strain diagnosis (5.1% vs. 3.2%, P = .0002). Compared with patients who underwent SLAP repair, those who underwent arthroscopic biceps tenodesis exhibited 1.3 times more instances of acute postoperative pain (5.2% vs. 4.0%, P = .011). Similarly, open biceps tenodesis exhibited 1.8 times more instances of acute postoperative pain (6.9% vs. 3.8%, P < .0001) and 1.3 times more shoulder stiffness (11.8% vs. 9.0%, P < .0001). CONCLUSION: In the last 20 years, patients who underwent SLAP repair were associated with higher risk of revision surgery and subsequent rotator cuff strain diagnosis. Conversely, patients who underwent biceps tenodesis were associated with higher rates of acute postoperative pain and shoulder stiffness.

A vast array of pseudosuchian body plans evolved during the diversification of the group in the Triassic Period, but few can compare to the toothless, long-necked, and bipedal shuvosaurids. Members of this clade possess theropod-like character states mapped on top of more plesiomorphic pseudosuchian character states, complicating our understanding of the evolutionary history of the skeleton. One taxon in this clade, Shuvosaurus inexpectatus has been assigned to various theropod dinosaur groups based on a partial skull and referred material and its postcranium was assigned to a different taxon in Pseudosuchia. After the discovery of a skeleton of a shuvosaurid with a Shuvosaurus-like skull and a pseudosuchian postcranial skeleton, it became clear Shuvosaurus inexpectatus was a pseudosuchian. Nevertheless, a number of questions have arisen about what skeletal elements belonged to Shuvosaurus inexpectatus, the identification of skull bones, and the resulting implication for pseudosuchian evolution. Here, we detail the anatomy of the skeleton Shuvosaurus inexpectatus through a critical lens, parse out the bones that belong to the taxon or those that clearly do not or may not belong to the taxon, rediagnose the taxon based on these revisions, and compare the taxon to other archosaurs. We find that Shuvosaurus inexpectatus possesses similar anatomy to other shuvosaurids but parts of the skeleton of the taxon clarifies the anatomy of the group given that they are preserved in Shuvosaurus inexpectatus but not in others. Shuvosaurus inexpectatus is represented by at least 14 individuals from the West Texas Post Quarry (Adamanian holochronozone) and all Shuvosaurus inexpectatus skeletal material from the locality pertains to skeletally immature individuals. All of the skeletons are missing most of the neural arches, ribs, and most of the forelimb. We only recognize Shuvosaurus inexpectatus from the Post Quarry and all other material assigned to the taxon previously is better assigned to the broader group Shuvosauridae.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporotic fractures lead to significant decreases in the quality of life with increases in morbidity, mortality, and disability. Treatment with a variety of anti-epileptic drugs, such as phenytoin, has been understood to cause a decrease in bone mineral density. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cohort A was identified as patients that were 18-55 years old that had epilepsy and recurrent seizures that were also prescribed phenytoin. Cohort B was identified as patients that were 18-55 years old that had epilepsy and recurrent seizures but were not prescribed phenytoin or other anti-epileptic medications. Cohorts were matched for relevant confounding pathologies and demographic factors. Outcomes were evaluated from 1 day to 5 years after the indexed event. RESULTS: A total of 35,936 patients with epilepsy that were prescribed phenytoin were matched with 109,335 patients with epilepsy that were not prescribed phenytoin. Patients on phenytoin therapy were at significantly higher risk for osteoporosis without pathological fracture, fracture of metatarsal bone, fracture of shoulder and upper arm, fracture of distal radius, fracture of thoracic vertebra, fracture of cervical vertebra, fracture of lumbar vertebra, fracture of femoral head or neck, pertrochanteric fracture, femoral shaft fracture, and distal tibia fracture (all outcomes p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Epileptic patients on phenytoin therapy that were 18-55 years old exhibited higher associated risk of osteoporosis and osteoporotic-fragility fractures of various regions. Patients that undergo phenytoin therapy for epilepsy treatment should be educated on the increased risk of bone fractures and have appropriate lifestyle and diet modifications.

Scleromochlus taylori is one of the most enigmatic members of the herpetofauna from the Lossiemouth Sandstone Formation (Upper Triassic) of Elgin (Moray, Scotland). For many years it was thought to be closely related to pterosaurs and dinosaurs, but the anatomy of this animal is difficult to interpret because of the notoriously poor preservation of the six available specimens, which comprise void space in the sandstone after the bones were destroyed by diagenesis. Historically, these fossils have been studied using physical molds, which provide only incomplete, and potentially distorted, information. Due to these uncertainties, interpretations of the anatomy, phylogenetic relationships, and paleobiology of Scleromochlus taylori have remained contentious. Here, we use microcomputed tomographic (µCT) techniques to redescribe and illustrate the osteology of Scleromochlus in detail, building upon a short redescription of keystone features of the anatomy that we recently published. We digitally visualize, describe, and figure previously inaccessible-and thus unaltered-portions of its skeleton, as well as providing new observations on the exposed parts of each specimen. This work reveals many novel features of the skull, mandible, trunk, tail, girdles, forelimb, and hindlimb (particularly of the manus, femur, and pes), demonstrating that historic molding techniques failed, in some cases, to accurately capture the anatomy of Scleromochlus. Our review sheds light on some of the most controversial aspects of Scleromochlus morphology showing that this taxon retains plesiomorphic features of Avemetatarsalia in the postcranial skeleton, alongside a suite of synapomorphies diagnostic of pterosauromorphs (the broad clade of pterosaurs and taxa more closely related to them than dinosaurs), particularly one subgroup, the lagerpetids. Consistent with recent work, our updated phylogenetic analyses (Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian Inference) demonstrate that Scleromochlus taylori is an avemetatarsalian archosaur that is recovered firmly in an early diverging position within Pterosauromorpha, as a member of Lagerpetidae, thus shedding important information on the origin of pterosaurs, the first group of vertebrates to evolve powered flight.

Patients frequently turn to the internet to learn about their orthopedic procedures. This study evaluates the readability and quality of first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint fusion information found online. We evaluated websites based on classification, search term, readability, HON code, DISCERN score, Journal of the American Medical Association benchmark criteria, and an author-created MTP fusion index (MFI). The average readability of websites was 8.48 ± 1.99, above the recommended sixth- or eighth-grade reading level. Almost half of all websites (48.98%) provided "poor" information. Keywords had no significant impact on the readability or quality of information. Academic/governmental websites had the highest quality of information, with the highest DISCERN and second highest MFI. Most websites (52.04%) were commercial and were the easiest to read, but had the second lowest DISCERN and MFI scores. Our results suggest that inappropriate information on the MTP joint fusion procedure is abundant online. Academic/governmental websites have the highest quality of information, but may be difficult for patients to comprehend. Many websites do have readable and relevant information. We recommend that physicians create a list of websites with accurate, relevant information for patients to circumvent the misinformation they may find while navigating and reading online.

The anatomy of the braincase and associated soft tissues of the lagerpetid Dromomeron gregorii (Archosauria: Avemetatarsalia) from the Late Triassic of the United States is here described. This corresponds to the first detailed description of cranial materials of Lagerpetidae, an enigmatic group of Late Triassic (c. 236-200 Million years ago) animals that are the closest known relatives of pterosaurs, the flying reptiles. The braincase of D. gregorii is characterized by the presence of an anteriorly elongated laterosphenoid and a postparietal, features observed in stem-archosaurs but that were still unknown in early members of the avian lineage of archosaurs. Using micro-computed tomography (CT-scan data), we present digital reconstructions of the brain and endosseous labyrinth of D. gregorii. The brain of D. gregorii exhibits a floccular lobe of the cerebellum that projects within the space of the semicircular canals. The semicircular canals are relatively large when compared to other archosauromorphs, with the anterior canal exhibiting a circular shape. These features of the sensory structures of D. gregorii are more similar to those of pterosaurs than to those of other early avemetatarsalians. In sum, the braincase anatomy of D. gregorii shows a combination of plesiomorphic and apomorphic features in the phylogenetic context of Archosauria and suggests that the still poorly understood early evolution of the braincase in avemetatarsalians is complex, with a scenario of independent acquisitions and losses of character states.

Proterosuchidae represents the oldest substantial diversification of Archosauromorpha and plays a key role in understanding the biotic recovery after the end-Permian mass extinction. Proterosuchidae was long treated as a wastebasket taxon, but recent revisions have reduced its taxonomic content to five valid species from the latest Permian of Russia and the earliest Triassic (Induan) of South Africa and China. In addition to these occurrences, several isolated proterosuchid bones have been reported from the Induan Panchet Formation of India for over 150 years. Following the re-study of historical specimens and newly collected material from this unit, we erect the new proterosuchid species Samsarasuchus pamelae, which is represented by most of the presacral vertebral column. We also describe cf. proterosuchid and proterosuchid cranial, girdle and limb bones that are not referred to Samsarasuchus pamelae. Phylogenetic analyses recovered Samsarasuchus pamelae within the new proterosuchid clade Chasmatosuchinae. The taxonomic diversity of Proterosuchidae is substantially expanded here, with at least 11 nominal species and several currently unnamed specimens, and a biogeographical range encompassing present-day South Africa, China, Russia, India, Brazil, Uruguay and Australia. This indicates a broader taxonomic, phylogenetic and biogeographic diversification of Proterosuchidae than previously thought in the aftermath of the end-Permian mass extinction.

Dinosaurs and pterosaurs have remarkable diversity and disparity through most of the Mesozoic Era1-3. Soon after their origins, these reptiles diversified into a number of long-lived lineages, evolved unprecedented ecologies (for example, flying, large herbivorous forms) and spread across Pangaea4,5. Recent discoveries of dinosaur and pterosaur precursors6-10 demonstrated that these animals were also speciose and widespread, but those precursors have few if any well-preserved skulls, hands and associated skeletons11,12. Here we present a well-preserved partial skeleton (Upper Triassic, Brazil) of the new lagerpetid Venetoraptor gassenae gen. et sp. nov. that offers a more comprehensive look into the skull and ecology of one of these precursors. Its skull has a sharp, raptorial-like beak, preceding that of dinosaurs by around 80 million years, and a large hand with long, trenchant claws that firmly establishes the loss of obligatory quadrupedalism in these precursor lineages. Combining anatomical information of the new species with other dinosaur and pterosaur precursors shows that morphological disparity of precursors resembles that of Triassic pterosaurs and exceeds that of Triassic dinosaurs. Thus, the 'success' of pterosaurs and dinosaurs was a result of differential survival among a broader pool of ecomorphological variation. Our results show that the morphological diversity of ornithodirans started to flourish among early-diverging lineages and not only after the origins of dinosaurs and pterosaurs.

Mass extinctions change the trajectory of evolution and restructure ecosystems. The largest mass extinction, the end-Permian, is a particularly interesting case due to the hypothesized delay in the recovery of global ecosystems, where total trophic level recovery is not thought to have occurred until 5-9 million years after the extinction event. Diapsids, especially archosauromorphs, play an important role in this recovery, filling niches left vacant by therapsids and anapsids. However, the nature of lineage and ecological diversification of diapsids is obscured by the limited number of continuous, well-dated stratigraphic sections at the Permian-Triassic boundary and continuing through the first half of the Triassic. The Karoo Basin of South Africa is one such record, and particularly the late Early Triassic (Olenekian) Driefontein locality fills this gap in the diapsid fossil record. We collected a total of 102 teeth of which 81 are identified as diapsids and the remaining 21 as identified as temnospondyls. From the sample, seven distinct tooth morphotypes of diapsids are recognized, six of which are new to the locality. We used a combination of linear measurements, 3D geomorphometrics, and nMDS ordination to compare these morphotypes and made inferences about their possible diets. Although the morphotypes are readily differentiated in nMDS, the overall morphological disparity is low, and we infer five morphotypes are faunivorous with the other two potentially omnivorous or piscivorous based on their morphological similarities with dentitions from extant diapsids, demonstrating an unsampled taxonomic and ecological diversity of diapsids in the Early Triassic based on teeth. Although ecological specialization at Driefontein may be low, it records a diversity of diapsid taxa, specifically of archosauromorph lineages.

Fear-potentiated startle (FPS) can be used to measure fear and safety learning-behaviors affected by trauma that may map onto posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Therefore, FPS could be a candidate biomarker of trauma-related psychopathology and a potential identifier of trauma-exposed youth in need of focused treatment. We enrolled n = 71 (35 females, Mage  = 12.7 years) Syrian youth exposed to civilian war trauma. Eyeblink electromyogram (EMG) data from a differential conditioning FPS paradigm were obtained 2.5 years after resettlement. Youth provided self-report of trauma exposure (Harvard Trauma Questionnaire) and PTSD symptoms (UCLA PTSD Reaction Index). While FPS during conditioning was not associated with symptoms, associations with psychopathology emerged in fear extinction. Probable PTSD was associated with FPS in the last block of extinction, such that FPS to threat cue was significantly greater in the PTSD+ group compared to the PTSD- group at the end of extinction (F = 6.25, p = .015). As with adults, we observed a deficit in extinction learning but not fear conditioning in youth with PTSD. These results support the use of trauma-informed cognitive behavioral therapy based on the learning principles of extinction in youth with PTSD.

BACKGROUND: Constitutional periorbital dark circles (PDC) are common in skin of color and represent a therapeutic challenge. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the experience of the International Peeling Society on the safety and effectiveness of deep chemical peeling in the treatment of constitutional PDC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Multi-institutional, retrospective case series (1990-2020) of constitutional PDC treated by deep chemical peeling. Descriptive analysis by age, sex, Fitzpatrick phototype, phenol-croton formula, degree and durability of improvement, and complications. RESULTS: Fifty-five phenol-croton oil peels were performed in 52 patients: 3 patients received a second peel for periorbital rhytids 72 to 84 months after the first peel. 92% (48/52) of patients were women; the median age was 46 years (range, 23-68 years). 89% (46/52) of patients were Fitzpatrick III-IV. Most common formula included phenol 60% to 65% and croton oil 0.6% to 0.7%. 89% (49/55) of peels demonstrated >50% clinical improvement. The median duration of improvement was 24 months (range, 1.5-168 months), and 69% (36/52) of patients demonstrated ongoing improvement at the last follow-up. 4% (2/55) of peels exhibited complications of persistent erythema that resolved without scarring. CONCLUSION: Based on its safety and effectiveness, deep chemical peels are a treatment of choice for constitutional PDC.

The femora of diapsids have undergone morphological changes related to shifts in postural and locomotor modes, such as the transition from plesiomorphic amniote and diapsid taxa to the apomorphic conditions related to a more erect posture within Archosauriformes. One remarkable clade of Triassic diapsids is the chameleon-like Drepanosauromorpha. This group is known from numerous articulated but heavily compressed skeletons that have the potential to further inform early reptile femoral evolution. For the first time, we describe the three-dimensional osteology of the femora of Drepanosauromorpha, based on undistorted fossils from the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation and Dockum Group of North America. We identify apomorphies and a combination of character states that link these femora to those in crushed specimens of drepanosauromorphs and compare our sample with a range of amniote taxa. Several characteristics of drepanosauromorph femora, including a hemispherical proximal articular surface, prominent asymmetry in the proximodistal length of the tibial condyles, and a deep intercondylar sulcus, are plesiomorphies shared with early diapsids. The femora contrast with those of most diapsids in lacking a crest-like, distally tapering internal trochanter. They bear a ventrolaterally positioned tuberosity on the femoral shaft, resembling the fourth trochanter in Archosauriformes. The reduction of an internal trochanter parallels independent reductions in therapsids and archosauriforms. The presence of a ventrolaterally positioned trochanter is also similar to that of chameleonid squamates. Collectively, these features demonstrate a unique femoral morphology for drepanosauromorphs, and suggest an increased capacity for femoral adduction and protraction relative to most other Permo-Triassic diapsids.
