RESUMEN

Controlled aggregation is of great significance in designing nanodevices with high electrochemical performance. In this study, an in situ aggregation strategy with cyclodextrin polymer (CDP) was employed to prepare polyaniline (PANI)/MXene (MX) composites. MXene served as a two-dimensional structure template. Due to supramolecular interactions, CDP could be controllably modified with PANI layers, effectively preventing the self-polymerization of PANI. As a result, this integration facilitated a more uniform growth of PANI on MXene and further improved the capacitance performance of CDP-MX/PA. In a three-electrode system, the specific capacitance of MX/PA at 1 A g-1 was 460.8 F g-1, which increased to 523.8 F g-1 after CDP-induced growth. CDP-MX/PA exhibited a high energy density of 27.7 W h kg-1 at a power density of 700 W kg-1. This suggests that the synthetic strategy employed in this study holds promise in providing robust support for the preparation of high-performance energy-storage device.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to explore the impact of L-arginine (Arg) on the development of resistance to Alternaria tenuissima (A. tenuissima) in blueberries. The metabolism of reactive oxygen species, pathogenesis-related proteins (PRs), and jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis pathways were analyzed, including changes in activity and gene expression of key enzymes. The results indicated that Arg treatment could prevent the development of Alternaria fruit rot in postharvest blueberries. In addition, it was also found to induce a burst of hydrogen peroxide in the blueberries early on during storage, thereby improving their resistance to A. tenuissima. Arg treatment was observed to increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase) and related gene expression, as well as the total levels of phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanin in the blueberries. The activity and gene expression of the PRs (chitinase and ß-1,3-glucanase) were elevated in Arg-treated blueberries, boosting their resistance to pathogens. Additionally, a surge in endogenous JA content was detected in Arg-treated blueberries, along with upregulated expression of key genes related the JA biosynthesis pathway (VcLOX1, VcAOS1, VcAOC, VcAOC3, VcOPR1, VcOPR3, VcMYC2, and VcCOI1), thereby further bolstering disease resistance. In conclusion, Arg treatment was determined to be a promising prospective method for controlling Alternaria fruit rot in blueberries.

RESUMEN

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have emerged as a promising energy storage system, but their practical application is hindered by the polysulfide shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics. To address these challenges, we have developed CoO/MoO3@nitrogen-doped carbon (CoO/MoO3@NC) hollow heterostructures based on porous ZIF-67 as separators in LSBs. CoO has a strong anchoring effect on polysulfides. The heterostructure formed after the introduction of MoO3 increases the adsorption of polysulfides. The carbon coating outside the heterostructure improves the ion transmission efficiency of the battery, leading to enhanced electrochemical performance. The modified LSB demonstrates a low-capacity decay rate of 0.092% over 500 cycles at 0.5C, with a high discharge capacity of 613 mAh g-1 at 1C. This work presents a novel approach for the preparation of hollow heterostructure materials, aiming for high-performance LSBs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the effect of 6, 12, and 24 h short-term anaerobic treatment on kiwiberry quality and antioxidant properties at 5 °C. RESULTS: Short-term anaerobic treatment was found to delay ripening and softening in kiwiberries, evident from changes in ethylene release, total soluble solids, starch, protopectin, and fruit texture. The 24 h treatment group exhibited the lowest decay rate of 12% on day 49, a 38% reduction compared with the control group. Anaerobic treatment reduced flesh translucency and decay in the fruit. The 12 h and 24 h treatments enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase, and increased the level of total phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and ascorbic acid. Moreover, it lowered oxidative damage in cell membranes, evidenced by reduced malondialdehyde content and relative conductivity. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that anaerobic treatment maintains the fruit quality by stimulating its antioxidant defense system. Therefore, short-term anaerobic treatment emerges as a promising method for kiwiberry storage. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The Gibberellic Acid-Stimulated Arabidopsis (GASA) gene family is widely involved in the regulation of plant growth, development, and stress response. However, information on the GASA gene family has not been reported in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis). RESULTS: Here, we conducted genome-wide identification and analysis of the GASA genes in Chinese cabbage. In total, 15 GASA genes were identified in the Chinese cabbage genome, and the physicochemical property, subcellular location, and tertiary structure of the corresponding GASA proteins were elucidated. Phylogenetic analysis, conserved motif, and gene structure showed that the GASA proteins were divided into three well-conserved subfamilies. Synteny analysis proposed that the expansion of the GASA genes was influenced mainly by whole-genome duplication (WGD) and transposed duplication (TRD) and that duplication gene pairs were under negative selection. Cis-acting elements of the GASA promoters were involved in plant development, hormonal and stress responses. Expression profile analysis showed that the GASA genes were widely expressed in different tissues of Chinese cabbage, but their expression patterns appeared to diverse. The qRT-PCR analysis of nine GASA genes confirmed that they responded to salt stress, heat stress, and hormonal triggers. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, this study provides a theoretical basis for further exploring the important role of the GASA gene family in the functional genome of Chinese cabbage.

RESUMEN

The postharvest quality of blueberry fruit is largely limited by deterioration. l-arginine (Arg) is a functional nontoxic amino acid with high biological activities. This study investigated the positive effects and the underlying mechanism of Arg treatment on the quality of postharvest blueberries. Arg effectively mitigated fruit decay and improved the quality of blueberries, including weight loss, firmness, and soluble solid content. Mechanistically, Arg-mediated activation of the anti-oxidative defense system reduced reactive oxygen species-mediated oxidative damage. Moreover, Arg treatment decreased the activities and gene expression of phospholipase D, lipoxygenase, and lipase-inhibiting membrane lipid peroxidation during the prolonged storage of blueberries. Meanwhile, Arg treatment increased nitric oxide (NO) content and NO synthase activity. Furthermore, correlation and principal component analyses revealed the enhancement of Arg treatment on antioxidant capacity. This study suggests that Arg treatment can maintain the postharvest quality of blueberries by improving antioxidant capacity.

RESUMEN

Intrauterine adhesion (IUA) is a common gynecological disease caused by endometrial injury, which might result in abnormal menstruation, miscarriage, and even fetal deaths. Nevertheless, existing treatment strategies such as intrauterine device and uterine cavity balloons only provide a physical barrier, and not circumvent inflammation of endometrial microenvironment and retrograde infection. In this study, a slow-controlled bifunctional nanostructure was developed via encapsulating hyaluronic acid (HA) on surface of silver-metal organic framework (Ag-MOF), and then loaded in poly lactic-co-glycolic acid scaffold to prevent IUA. In therapy, macro-molecule of HA provided anti-inflammatory function by the adjustment of signal transduction pathways of macrophage surface receptors, whereas Ag-MOF inactivated bacteria by destroying bacterial membrane and producing reactive oxygen. Significantly, the coated HA effectively avoided burst release of Ag+, thus achieving long-term antibacterial property and good biocompatibility. Antibacterial results showed antibacterial rate of the scaffold reached 87.8 % against staphylococcus aureus. Anti-inflammatory assays showed that the scaffold inhibited the release of inflammatory cytokines and promoted the release of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, in vitro cell tests revealed that the scaffold effectively inhibited fibroblast growth, indicating its good ability to prevent IUA. Taken together, the scaffold may be a promising candidate for IUA treatment.

RESUMEN

The neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which acts as a transducer, is responsible for improving cerebral stroke, neuropathic pain, and depression. Exercise can alter extracellular nucleotide levels and purinergic receptors in central nervous system (CNS) structures. This inevitably activates or inhibits the expression of BDNF via purinergic receptors, particularly the P2X receptor (P2XR), to alleviate pathological progression. In addition, the significant involvement of sensitive P2X4R in mediating increased BDNF and p38-MAPK for intracerebral hemorrhage and pain hypersensitivity has been reported. Moreover, archetypal P2X7R blockade induces mouse antidepressant-like behavior and analgesia by BDNF release. This review summarizes BDNF-mediated neural effects via purinergic receptors, speculates that P2X4R and P2X7R could be priming molecules in exercise-mediated changes in BDNF, and provides strategies for the protective mechanism of exercise in neurogenic disease.

RESUMEN

Heavy waterlogging and high temperatures occur frequently in North China, yet the effects of changing environments on photochemical reactions and carbon metabolism have not been described in ginger. To determine the impact of waterlogging and high temperature on ginger, in this study, treatment groups were established as follows: (a) well-watered at ambient temperature (28 °C/22 °C) (CK), (b) well-watered at moderate temperature (33 °C/27 °C) (MT), (c) well-watered at high temperature (38 °C/32 °C) (HT), (d) waterlogging at ambient temperature (CK-WL), (e) waterlogging at moderate temperature (MT-WL), and (f) waterlogging at high temperature (HT-WL) during the rhizome growth period. We analyzed the effect of different treatments on the photosynthetic performance of ginger. Here, our results showed that waterlogging and high temperature irreversibly decreased the photosynthetic pigment content, increased the ROS content of leaves, inhibited leaf carbon assimilation and limited PSII electron transport efficiency. In addition, waterlogging in isolation and high temperature in isolation affected photosynthesis to varying degrees. Taken together, photosynthesis was more sensitive to the combined stress than to the single stresses. The results of this research provide deep insights into the response mechanisms of crop photosynthesis to different water and temperature conditions and aid the development of scientific methods for mitigating plant damage over time.

RESUMEN

Synergistic degradation of chitosan by discrete ultrasonic and H2O2 was investigated. The effects of ultrasonic time, ultrasonic power, chitosan concentration, and H2O2 concentration were evaluated. The results revealed that ultrasonic power, H2O2 concentration and ultrasonic time were positively correlated with degradation rate, while chitosan concentration was negative. The results of degradation kinetics revealed that the synergistic degradation process was consistent with the first-order reaction. Changes of characterization of chitosan were analyzed by FTIR, 13C NMR, XRD, SEM, and AFM analysis. The results indicated that the synergistic degradation did not destroy the pyranose ring. The crystal structure of degraded chitosan was destroyed, and the molecular conformation changed significantly. The antioxidant activity of the original and degraded chitosan was determined by DPPH and reducing power assays. The degraded chitosan had higher antioxidant activity. All results showed that the synergistic degradation of discrete ultrasound and H2O2 was a feasible method for large-scale low molecular weight chitosan production.

RESUMEN

Solution plasma process (SPP) was employed to degrade chitosan. The effects of the initial pH value and the distance between the electrodes on the steady shear flow behavior, structural characterization, molecular conformation, and antioxidant activity of chitosan were investigated. The results revealed that a lower initial pH value and a narrower distance between the electrodes were beneficial to the decrease in viscosity and increase in shear-thinning capacity. Structural characterization of the chitosan by FT-IR and 1H NMR showed that chemical structure of chitosan was not destroyed at different process parameters. The results of XRD, HPSEC-MALLS, SEM, and AFM indicated that SPP degradation clearly decreased the crystallinity, molecular weight, molecular size, and molecular aggregation of chitosan. At initial pH values of 2.8 and 5.8, the molecular weight was 27.16 and 44.25 kDa, at the distance between the electrodes of 4 and 8 mm, it was 35.88 and 66.17 kDa, respectively. The results of DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays demonstrated that a lower initial pH value and a narrower distance between the electrodes enhanced the antioxidant activity.

RESUMEN

Umami and aroma are important flavor qualities of edible mushrooms, and packaging can maintain or improve the flavor during storage. This study explored the effects of light-proof packaging (LPP), light-transparent packaging (LTP), vacuum light-proof packaging (VLPP), and vacuum light-transparent packaging (VLTP) on umami taste and aroma of dried Suillus granulatus. Monosodium glutamate-like amino acid content, equivalent umami concentration, and electronic tongue umami sensory scores in VLTP were higher at 2, 4, and 6 months and higher in LTP at 8 and 10 months. Principal component analysis of aroma components showed that the comprehensive scores were higher for the transparent packaging. Ketones and pyrazines were more abundant in transparent packaging. Flavor quality was better at 4-6 months, based on the equivalent umami concentration and the concentration of eight-carbon compounds that contribute to aroma. Transparent packaging is a promising way to optimize the flavor of dried Suillus granulatus.

RESUMEN

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many buildings in northeast China have had clusters of infected cases in the vertical layout. There is speculation that vertical aerosol transmission occurs. The houses in northeast China are airtight, and range hoods may be used for a long period of time when cooking. The pathway and factors influencing vertical aerosol transmission are worth studying. To elucidate a viral aerosol transmission pathway, we selected a multistory apartment and a high-rise building in Changchun city, Jilin province, China, to conduct an in-depth investigation and on-site simulation experiments. According to epidemiological investigation information on infected cases, building structures, drainage, ventilation, etc., we used fluorescent microspheres to simulate the behaviors of infected people, such as breathing and flushing the toilet after defecation, to discharge simulated viruses and track and monitor them. The field simulation experiment confirmed the transmission of fluorescent microsphere aerosols to other rooms in two types of buildings using a vertical aerosol transmission pathway of toilet flush-sewage pipe-floor drain without a water seal. Our study showed that, in the absence of a U-shaped trap or floor drain water seal whether in a multistory apartment or high-rise residential building, there is a transmission pathway of "excretion of virus through feces-toilet flushing-sewage pipe-floor drain without water seal," which will cause the vertical transmission of viral aerosol across floors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the negative pressure generated by turning on the range hood when closing doors and windows increase aerosol transmission. Based on this negative pressure, prevention and control measures for residential buildings in northeast China during the COVID-19 pandemic were proposed.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the role of various active species (OH, O, and H2O2) under solution plasma process (SPP) degradation based on the influence of different radical scavengers on the degradation effect and ESR spectra. The structures of oligochitosan with different radical scavengers were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, and XRD analysis. The results indicated that OH, O, and H2O2 played important roles in SPP degradation. The degradation effect of the O was even higher than that of the OH. The physical effects (e.g. UV light and shockwaves) of SPP method or Fenton's reaction might contribute to the degradation treatment. Furthermore, the different scavengers could adjust the degradation effect of the corresponding free radicals. FT-IR, 1H NMR, and XRD analysis revealed that the primary chemical structure of chitosan was not changed by the scavengers. This study found that the controlled degradation by addition of a radical scavenger is feasible. Therefore, this study provided a straightforward analysis of the role of the free radicals and the controlled degradation of chitosan under SPP treatment, which will be beneficial to further develop SPP techniques for chitosan degradation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation of serum vitamin A and vitamin E levels with the occurrence and severity of preeclampsia. METHODS: The clinical data of 5,000 pregnant women in our hospital were retrospectively studied. Five hundred and sixty-five pregnant women with preeclampsia were divided into a mild group (259 cases) and a severe group (306 cases). The rest 4435 healthy pregnant women were classified as the healthy group. The concentrations of serum vitamin A and vitamin E in each group were compared to analyze the risk factors for preeclampsia. RESULTS: The levels of vitamin A and vitamin E were negatively correlated with the severity of preeclampsia (P<0.001). The logistic regression analysis showed that older age (OR=1.674), vitamin A deficiency (OR=2.463) and vitamin E deficiency (OR=2.206) were independent risk factors for preeclampsia (all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Older age, vitamin A deficiency and vitamin E deficiency are the risk factors for preeclampsia. The concentrations of vitamin A and vitamin E are negatively correlated with the severity of preeclampsia. Vitamin A and vitamin E deficiencies in preeclampsia can increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, which needs timely intervention.

RESUMEN

Chinese herbs have been used as dietary supplements to improve exercise performance. However, evidence-based studies for the use of Chinese herbs in sports remain scarce. Traditional Chinese therapy (TCT), a form of traditional Chinese non-pharmacological intervention, has remained in use for thousands of years in sports medicine. TCT is beneficial for sports injuries and in enhancing skill development, and is becoming increasingly popular among athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and individuals who regularly exercise. The therapeutic effects of TCT have been demonstrated by clinical and experimental studies, but using these modalities still is associate with potentially adverse effects. Further well-designed studies are necessary to confirm the efficacy of TCT in sports medicine. This review aims to summarize the application of TCT, discuss the issues surrounding TCT clinical research, and provide suggestions for applying traditional Chinese methods in the field of sports medicine.

RESUMEN

Pleurotus geesteranus has recently been gaining popularity due to its strong umami taste. In the present study, umami taste, energy level, and energy metabolism-related enzymes activity in harvested P. geesteranus, stored at 20, 10, 5, and 0 °C, were investigated to evaluate the relationship between umami taste and energy status. Results showed that the mushroom at 5 °C exhibited significantly higher (p < 0.05) equivalent umami concentration (EUC), higher content of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), adenosine diphosphate (ADP), adenosine monophosphate (AMP), and higher activity of succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) in late storage. AMP, associating umami taste with energy, presented a significantly positive correlation with EUC and umami determined by electronic tongue at 5 °C. Furthermore, there were better correlations between umami taste and energy status of mushroom at 5 °C. The results suggest that higher energy status of post-harvest P. geesteranus contributes to better umami taste.

RESUMEN

Live poultry markets are a source of human infection with avian influenza A (H7N9) virus. On February 21, 2014, a poultry farmer infected with H7N9 virus was identified in Jilin, China, and H7N9 and H9N2 viruses were isolated from the patient's farm. Reassortment between these subtype viruses generated five genotypes, one of which caused the human infection. The date of H7N9 virus introduction to the farm is estimated to be between August 21, 2013 (95% confidence interval [CI] June 6, 2013-October 6, 2013) and September 25, 2013 (95% CI May 28, 2013-January 4, 2014), suggesting that the most likely source of virus introduction was the first batch of poultry purchased in August 2013. The reassortment event that led to the human virus may have occurred between January 2, 2014 (95% CI November 8, 2013-February 12, 2014) and February 12, 2014 (95% CI January 19, 2014-February 18, 2014). Our findings demonstrate that poultry farms could be a source of reassortment between H7N9 virus and H9N2 virus as well as human infection, which emphasizes the importance to public health of active avian influenza surveillance at poultry farms.
