RESUMEN

The genus Cornus (Cornaceae) plants are widely distributed in Europe, southwest Asia, North America, and the mountains of Central America, South America, and East Africa. Cornus plants exhibit antimicrobial, antioxidative, antiproliferative, cytotoxic, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and immunomodulatory activities. These plants are exploited to possess various phytoconstituents such as triterpenoids, iridoids, anthocyanins, tannins and flavonoids. Pharmacological research and clinical investigations on various Cornus species have advanced significantly in recent years. Over the past few decades, a significant amount of focus has also been made into developing new delivery systems for Cornus mas and Cornus officinalis. This review focuses on the morphological traits, ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities and clinical studies on extracts and active constituents from plants of Cornus genus. The review also highlights recent novel delivery systems for Cornus mas and Cornus officinalis extracts to promote sustained and targeted delivery in diverse disorders. The overwhelming body of research supports the idea that plants from the genus Cornus have therapeutic potential and can be investigated in the future for treatingseveral ailments.

Introduction The Boston Naming Test (BNT) is a widely used US neuropsychological evaluation of confrontation naming for the examination of adults and children with learning disabilities and diagnosis of communication disorders, aphasia, dementia, and acquired brain injury or dysfunction. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the practicality of the original English version of the 60-item BNT (BNT-60) on an Arab population and the need for a new adaptive Arabic version sensitive to cultural biases and to offer normative data that can serve as a reference for researchers and clinicians in the Gulf region, especially the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Data relating to the familiarity degree of the BNT-60 were also collected. Methods This research involved 105 randomly selected and cognitively healthy college students who were native Arabic speakers recruited in Jeddah. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) was administered with a cutoff score of 26. The participants were examined for naming accuracy, naming agreement, and familiarity in using the BNT-60. The data were then analyzed and compared with the findings from studies conducted in the United States. Results The BNT-60 was administered to 105 university students from the KSA, and the results were compared with the BNT-60 booklet norms (second edition). Their average performance was noticeably below the norms established by the original test standards. Compared with the participants in the US studies, the participants made approximately 65% more errors on the items including pretzel, wreath, beaver, harmonica, acorn, stilts, harp, hammock, knocker, pelican, muzzle, unicorn, funnel, accordion, asparagus, tripod, yoke, and trellis and 25% more errors on the items including seahorse, dart, igloo, sphinx, palette, and abacus. The item "boomerang" was not compared with the US sample because of differences in the version of the BNT, but the errors in naming this item were as frequent as those in naming the other misrecognized items. The internal consistency among the items' degrees of familiarity was also very high (α = 0.966), and a significant connection (r = 0.837, P < 0.001) was observed between object familiarity and naming accuracy. The Arabic-speaking population in the KSA and English-speaking population in the United States showed very different levels of familiarity with numerous items. Conclusion The participants' familiarity with the BNT objects varied depending on their culture and impacted their naming accuracy and overall scores on the test. Accordingly, the possibility of cultural biases should be considered when administering the BNT to the population of the KSA and the possibility of making changes so that the test better reflects the Arab culture as suggested.

Abnormal aggregation and amyloid inclusions of TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) and α-Synuclein (α-Syn) are frequently co-observed in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease. Several reports showed TDP-43 C-terminal domain (CTD) and α-Syn interact with each other and the aggregates of these two proteins colocalized together in different cellular and animal models. Molecular dynamics simulation was conducted to elucidate the stability of the TDP-43 and Syn complex structure. The interfacial mutations in protein complexes changes the stability and binding affinity of the protein that may cause diseases. Here, we have utilized the computational saturation mutagenesis approach including structure-based stability and binding energy calculations to compute the systemic effects of missense mutations of TDP-43 CTD and α-Syn on protein stability and binding affinity. Most of the interfacial mutations of CTD and α-Syn were found to destabilize the protein and reduced the protein binding affinity. The results thus shed light on the functional consequences of missense mutations observed in TDP-43 associated proteinopathies and may provide the mechanisms of co-morbidities involving these two proteins.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical profile of a sample of Saudi patients with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). METHOD: A retrospective review of charts of FND patients seen from 2021-2023 at a neuropsychiatry clinic at an academic tertiary care center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. RESULTS: Out of 473 patients seen in the clinic, 52 (11%) had FND. Their mean age was 34 (standard deviation = 10.7), and 77% were female. Family disputes (39%) were the most reported risk factor, followed by sexual abuse (15%). The most common FND symptoms were nonepileptic seizures (61.5%) and abnormal movements (30.8%). Pain was reported by 57.7% and cognitive symptoms by 36.5%. FND symptoms were frequently attributed to supernatural causes (67.3%). During the last follow up visit, 53.9% of patients reported FND symptom improvement, whereas 21.2% reported no change, 10.2% reported worsening, and 15% were lost to follow-up. The proportion of patients without symptom improvement was higher among patients with cognitive symptoms (45.5% vs 18% respectively, X2 = 10.08, df = 3, P = .018). The mean number of visits was highest in patients reporting worsening and lowest among patients reporting no change (F = 4.21, P = .017). CONCLUSION: The role of family disputes in FND in the Middle East, the role of supernatural concepts in how FND is perceived, and the relatively high rate of subjective improvement within this sample of Saudi FND patients merit exploration. Cognitive symptoms may be a prognostic indicator. Prospective multicenter research using standardized assessment scales is needed.

Functional neurological disorder (FND) is characterized by neurological symptoms that lack congruence with traditional neurological diagnoses. Historically viewed through a Freudian psychoanalytic lens, FND has been conceptualized as a purely psychogenic disorder. However, the contemporary biopsychosocial perspective on FND emphasizes contributions of cognitive and neural circuit dysfunction and the disabling and involuntary nature of the illness. In Saudi Arabia, evidence suggests the prevalence of FND is significant. However, clinical programs and research focused on FND have been lacking. Studies from the region indicate that practitioners may have outdated views of FND. To address this, this narrative review provides an updated perspective on FND that is relevant to Saudi Arabia and the region. It delves into the evolving perception of FND, its underlying pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical presentations, and recent diagnostic and management advances. Unique features of FND in Saudi Arabia may include a significant role for family disputes as a risk factor, prevalent supernatural perceptions of FND, high prevalence of somatization, and cognitive dysfunction, and a potential favorable prognosis. The article concludes by providing the following recommendations related to FND in Saudi Arabia and the region: i) building educational programs to update clinicians about contemporary biopsychosocial perspectives on FND; ii) emphasizing a positive diagnostic approach based on clinical findings in FND; iii) instituting multidisciplinary programs to care for FND patients; iv) supporting systematic research efforts to explore culture-specific FND risk factors, patient outcome measures, and attitudes toward the disorder; v) developing national FND clinical practice guidelines; and vi) launching awareness campaigns to reduce FND stigma.

BACKGROUND: The burden of behavioral and psychiatric symptoms in dementia (BPSD) has not been characterized in Saudi patients with Alzheimer disease (AD). Moreover, the Saudi version of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (SNPI) has not been validated. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to validate the SNPI and describe frequency and determinants of BPSD in Saudi AD patients. METHODS: The SNPI and BEHAVE-AD instruments were administered to community-dwelling Saudi AD patients and their caregivers. RESULTS: The sample size was 192. The first 59 constituted the validation cohort. Cronbach alpha of the SNPI and BEHAVE-AD were 0.91 and 0.79, respectively. There were significant correlations between: (1) the total SNPI and BEHAVE-AD scores ( r =0.84, P <0.001); (2) analogous SNPI and BEHAVE-AD symptom subscores ( P <0.05); (3) SNPI and BEHAVE-AD caregiver distress ( F =22.6, P <0.001). Inter-rater reliability of the SNPI was excellent (kappa=0.74). Ninety percent of patients experienced 4 SNPI symptoms or more. Patients with stroke and prior psychiatric history were most likely to experience BPSDs. The most common symptom was apathy (82%). Caregiver distress was determined by the total NPI score and impulsiveness subscale score. CONCLUSIONS: The SNPI is valid and reliable for assessing BPSD in Saudi AD patients. Longitudinal studies of BPSDs in Saudi specialized dementia clinics are needed.

Background Approximately 50 million people globally suffer from epilepsy. The prevalence of epilepsy in Saudi Arabia has been reported at 6.5 per 1,000 persons, affecting nearly 1% of the entire population. However, limited data is available in the country regarding the sociodemographic factors affecting epilepsy and its associated postictal symptoms, which may lead to stigmatization and negatively impact patients. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH) in a survey format. Ethical approval was obtained from the Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine at King Abdulaziz University. The study population included patients with epilepsy who visited King Abdulaziz University Hospital's outpatient neurology clinics from October 2021 to March 2022. Results The study participants' average age at the time of the first seizure was 16.5 years, with patients experiencing seizures as early as within the first year of life and as late as 70 years of age. Patients who had had their first seizure during the first year of life did not have any schooling (p<0.0001) and had learning difficulties (p<0.00001). Focal onset impaired awareness seizures were significantly associated with motor weakness (p=0.023) and mood alterations (p=0.014), while postictal fear, anxiety or panic, and sleep disruption were statistically significant for focal onset aware seizures (p=0.015 and p=0.050). Conclusion This study highlights the sociodemographic differences between patients in Saudi Arabia and in other areas. It may also point to novel findings regarding the postictal symptoms associated with the various seizure types.

Early diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to positively affect patients' lives. To save time and costs associated with clinical investigation, deep learning approaches have been used widely to predict MCI. This study proposes optimized deep learning models for differentiating between MCI and normal control samples. In previous studies, the hippocampus region located in the brain is used extensively to diagnose MCI. The entorhinal cortex is a promising area for diagnosing MCI since severe atrophy is observed when diagnosing the disease before the shrinkage of the hippocampus. Due to the small size of the entorhinal cortex area relative to the hippocampus, limited research has been conducted on the entorhinal cortex brain region for predicting MCI. This study involves the construction of a dataset containing only the entorhinal cortex area to implement the classification system. To extract the features of the entorhinal cortex area, three different neural network architectures are optimized independently: VGG16, Inception-V3, and ResNet50. The best outcomes were achieved utilizing the convolution neural network classifier and the Inception-V3 architecture for feature extraction, with accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve scores of 70%, 90%, 54%, and 69%, respectively. Furthermore, the model has an acceptable balance between precision and recall, achieving an F1 score of 73%. The results of this study validate the effectiveness of our approach in predicting MCI and may contribute to diagnosing MCI through MRI.

Alzheimer Disease (AD) constitutes a major global healthcare problem. Standard AD pharmacotherapies offer only modest transient cognitive and behavioral benefits. Aducanumab, an amyloid monoclonal antibody, was the first disease modifying agent to be approved for AD treatment. However, concerns about its efficacy and side effects led regulatory institutions around the world to restrict its use. Lecanemab was the second amyloid antibody to receive accelerated approval for use in early AD. This review and consensus statement was prepared by the Saudi Chapter of Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology to review the current developments in AD immunotherapies from a Saudi perspective. We outline recommendations with regards to offering aducanumab and other future immunotherapies to Saudi AD patients. We describe resources, infrastructure, research, and clinical practice changes that must be attained to transform the patient journey and clinical pathways of AD in Saudi Arabia to enable offering AD immunotherapies in Saudi Arabia.

Purpose: Calls have been made to integrate concepts and practices derived from Muslim culture into medical professionalism in Muslim societies. Little is known about how these religious cultural concepts (RCCs) influence medical practice and education. This study explored the influence of RCCs on medical professionalism in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This was a qualitative study that implemented a constructivist, grounded theory approach. Semi-structured interviews about RCCs and medical professionalism were conducted with 15 Saudi physicians at a single academic medical center. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants of different genders, generations, and specialties. Data collection and analysis were iterative. A theoretical framework was formulated. Results: Key findings: (i) the role of RCCs in medical professionalism is perceived to be constantly evolving due to the evolution of societal interpretations of RCCs; (ii) participants described applying two standards to judge what is professional: a medical standard and a religious cultural standard. Participants shifted between these two standards variably and non-linearly. This variable shifting altered the values shaping medical professionalism, at times unpredictably. Discussion: Academic Saudi physicians argued against assuming a stable traditional interpretation of RCCs, emphasized the evolving contribution of RCCs to medical professionalism, and indicated that the process of merging religious cultural and medical standards in medical practice is variable and may alter medical practice values. Therefore, these physicians perceived RCCs to be useful as supplements to but not as a backbone for medical professionalism. Careful consideration of the potential impact of RCCs on the values of medical professionalism is warranted.

BACKGROUND: Philosophical beliefs regarding the origin of mental illness may underlie resistance to psychiatric treatment and affect attitudes toward the mentally ill. AIM: The present study sought to: (1) identify characteristics of medical students who hold mind-brain dualism (MBD) beliefs and (2) determine relationships between MBD beliefs and perceptions of mental illnesses. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study that asked medical students questions about mind-brain beliefs and religiosity. Three fictitious vignettes (schizophrenia, antisocial personality disorder [APD], and depression) were presented and then students asked about how much participants felt the patients in these scenarios bore responsibility for their illness. A MBD score was calculated to measure MBD beliefs, and a total responsibility score (RS) was used to measure patient blameworthiness. Mediation analysis was used to examine whether MBD beliefs explained the relationship between religiosity and perceived patient responsibility for their illness, and whether this was moderated by gender. RESULTS: The questionnaire was completed by 106 Saudi medical students. The average RS was highest for the APD scenario and lowest for schizophrenia, whereas depression fell intermediate between those two (ANOVA F (1.82, 219.83) = 27.21, P < .001). Religiosity was positively correlated with RS, a relationship that was mediated by MBD in all three vignettes. CONCLUSION: Mind-brain dualism beliefs among medical students in Saudi Arabia were associated with greater perceptions of self-infliction, preventability, controllability, and blameworthiness for patients with mental illness, moderated by gender. Greater emphasis on the neurobiological aspects of psychiatric disorders might help to change this attitude.

Neuronal damage in iron-sensitive brain regions occurs as a result of iron dyshomeostasis. Increased iron levels and iron-related pathogenic triggers are associated with neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Ferritin is a key player involved in iron homeostasis. Major pathological hallmarks of AD are amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and synaptic loss that lead to cognitive dysfunction and memory loss. Natural compounds persist in being the most excellent molecules in the area of drug discovery because of their different range of therapeutic applications. Bryostatins are naturally occurring macrocyclic lactones that can be implicated in AD therapeutics. Among them, Bryostatin 1 regulates protein kinase C, a crucial player in AD pathophysiology, thus highlighting the importance of bryostatin 1 in AD management. Thus, this study explores the binding mechanism of Bryotstain 1 with ferritin. In this work, the molecular docking calculations revealed that bryostatin 1 has an appreciable binding potential towards ferritin by forming stable hydrogen bonds (H-bonds). Molecular dynamics simulation studies deciphered the binding mechanism and conformational dynamics of ferrritin-bryostatin 1 system. The analyses of root mean square deviation, root mean square fluctuations, Rg, solvent accessible surface area, H-bonds and principal component analysis revealed the stability of the ferritin-bryostatin 1 docked complex throughout the trajectory of 100 ns. Moreover, the free energy landscape analysis advocated that the ferritin-bryostatin 1 complex stabilized to the global minimum. Altogether, the present work delineated the binding of bryostatin 1 with ferritin that can be implicated in the management of AD.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Epilepsy is a nervous system disorder. Encephalography (EEG) is a generally utilized clinical approach for recording electrical activity in the brain. Although there are a number of datasets available, most of them are imbalanced due to the presence of fewer epileptic EEG signals compared with non-epileptic EEG signals. This research aims to study the possibility of integrating local EEG signals from an epilepsy center in King Abdulaziz University hospital into the CHB-MIT dataset by applying a new compatibility framework for data integration. The framework comprises multiple functions, which include dominant channel selection followed by the implementation of a novel algorithm for reading XLtek EEG data. The resulting integrated datasets, which contain selective channels, are tested and evaluated using a deep-learning model of 1D-CNN, Bi-LSTM, and attention. The results achieved up to 96.87% accuracy, 96.98% precision, and 96.85% sensitivity, outperforming the other latest systems that have a larger number of EEG channels.

Background Epilepsy puts an enormous burden on the physical and mental health of patients and can negatively impact their Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). Previous studies have identified multiple factors impacting patients' HRQoL; however, a consensus has not been reached, as these factors vary among different populations. This has not been sufficiently investigated in Saudi Arabia. Thus, this study aims to assess the HRQoL of epilepsy patients, as measured by the Quality Of Life In Epilepsy-31 (QOLIE-31) questionnaire, to determine the effects of demographics, disease characteristics, and antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) on patients in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods This was a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study of adult epilepsy patients receiving AEDs who followed up at the epilepsy clinic at King Abdulaziz University Hospital between April 2018 and June 2018. Recruited individuals participated by phone interview. Results A total of 200 participants fulfilled our inclusion criteria and consented to participate; 57.4% were males. The average age was 32.8 years. The total average score on the QOLIE-31 was 61.56 (±17.52). QOLIE-31 scores correlated inversely with seizure frequency (p<.000) while the class of medication used, and the number of drugs administered did not correlate with HRQoL. Conclusion Whereas previous work has suggested a better quality of life when using newer generation AEDs, our study found no significant difference between the class of medication and whether monotherapy or polytherapy is used. Our findings suggest that efforts to improve HRQoL should be directed toward proper control of seizures regardless of medication class, as the frequency of attacks has the most detrimental effect on patients' quality of life.

Approximately 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The disorder is four times more common in males than in females. Zinc deficiency and mutations in SHANK2 and SHANK3 (members of a family of excitatory postsynaptic scaffolding proteins) are all risk factors that may contribute to the pathophysiology of the disease. The presence of shankopathies (loss of one copy of the SHANK3 gene) can lead to the development of Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMDS)-a rare genetic disorder characterized by developmental delay, intellectual disability, poor motor tone, and ASD-like symptoms. We reviewed the relationship between zinc, ASD, and PMDS as well as the effect of zinc supplementation in improving symptoms of ASD and PMDS based on 22 studies published within 6 years (2015-2020). Zinc deficiency (assessed by either dietary intake, blood, hair, or tooth matrix) was shown to be highly prevalent in ASD and PMDS patients as well as in preclinical models of ASD and PMDS. Zinc supplements improved the behavioral deficits in animal models of ASD and PMDS. Clinical trials are still needed to validate the beneficial therapeutic effects of zinc supplements in ASD and PMDS patients.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a global health issue, and ischemic stroke is among the most common strokes affecting many people worldwide. Throughout ischemic stroke, various immune cells counter its effect by releasing cytokines, chemokines, and angiogenic molecules. These molecules can work as potential biomarkers in the diagnosis and monitoring of the progress of ischemic stroke. The current study investigated the use of angiogenic molecules as biomarkers in ischemic stroke patients. METHODS: The samples were obtained from twenty healthy subjects and nineteen patients with ischemic stroke. Multiplex assay was used to measure the serum levels of angiogenic biomarkers, including endoglin, VEGF-A, endothelin-1, G-CSF, and angiopoietin-2. All data were analyzed using an unpaired Student's t-test. Correlations between measured parameters were made using Pearson correlations. RESULTS: Angiopoietin-2, VEGF-A, endothelin-1, and endoglin levels in stroke patients were significantly higher compared to healthy controls. Nevertheless, G-CSF level showed a non-significant increase in patients compared to controls. The correlation coefficient of measured angiogenic biomarkers among patients showed significant correlations between endoglin, angiopoietin, VEGF-A, and endothelin-1. DISCUSSION: The angiogenic factors were significantly increased in patients with ischemic stroke, which may help in the early detection of ischemic stroke and consequently prompt treatment and better prognosis.

Atypical antipsychotic drugs are commonly associated with undesirable side effects including body weight gain (BWG) and metabolic deficits. Many pharmacological interventions have been tested in an attempt to minimize or prevent these side effects. Preliminary evidence suggests that antidiabetic drugs may be effective in attenuating antipsychotic-induced BWG. In the current study, we examined the effect of an antidiabetic drug empagliflozin (EMPA) on BWG induced by anatypical antipsychotic drug olanzapine (Ola) in female and male Wistar rats. Rats were divided into six groups based on the dose they received: group 1 (female control), group 2 (female EMPA, 20 mg/kg; IG), group 3 (female Ola, 4 mg/kg; IP), group 4 (female Ola, 4 mg/kg; IP + EMPA, 20 mg/kg; IG), group 5 (male control), and group 6 (male Ola, 4 mg/kg; IP). Ola induced sustained increase in BWG. The subsequent treatment of Group 3 and 4 with EMPA attenuated the Ola-induced BWG in female Wistar rats. In terms of the gender difference between female and male Wistar rats, the male control group 5 gained more weight throughout the study as compared to the female control group 1. Similarly, the male Ola group 6 gained more weight throughout the study as compared to the female Ola group 3. However, Ola did not cause any weight difference between male rats treated with Ola in comparison with male control group, thus showing a significant gender difference regarding body weight between male and female Wistar rats regardless of Ola administration. In addition, the present findings showed that EMPA effectively attenuates the Ola induced BWG in female Wistar rats. These novel findings should help to better understand the underlying molecular and behavioral mechanisms contributing to the observed increase in body weight after treatment with Ola and other atypical antipsychotic drugs across male and female rats.

PURPOSE: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has evolved into a worldwide pandemic and continues to escalate exponentially in many countries across the globe. Recently, higher rates of psychological distress have been reported in several countries during the pandemic. Accordingly, the study aim was to investigate the relationship between public mental health and immune status during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Participants of this cross-sectional study were 2252 national and foreign residents of Saudi Arabia. We used a web-based self-rated questionnaire to measure the association between psychological distress (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales [DASS-21]) and immune status (Immune Status Questionnaire [ISQ]) during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also investigated predictors of reduced immune status using binary logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: Data from 1721 respondents showed that 17.5% of participants scored below the immune status cutoff (ISQ ˂ 6). Mean (± standard deviation) depression, anxiety, and stress scores in the reduced immune status group (ISQ ˂ 6) indicated moderate depression, anxiety, and stress (19.1 ± 11.4; 15.0 ± 9.6; 21.8 ± 11.2, respectively) and were significantly higher than scores in the normal immune status group (ISQ ≥ 6) (8.6 ± 9.1, P ˂ 0.0001; 5.0 ± 6.7, P ˂ 0.0001; 9.3 ± 9.3, P ˂ 0.0001, respectively). The regression analysis showed that age, anxiety, and stress were the only factors that significantly predicted the presence of reduced immune status. CONCLUSION: There is an association between mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic and immune response in the public, especially in elderly people.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread to over 150 countries worldwide. Since the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Saudi Arabia, cases have continued to escalate exponentially. The COVID-19 outbreak has had a negative effect on mental health and well-being. The study aimed to investigate the effects of the strict national regulations associated with the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of a convenience sample of Saudi residents. Saudi residents aged 18 years or older were invited to complete an online questionnaire after one month of a nationwide 24-h curfew between May 6, 2020 and May 13, 2020. We measured psychological distress using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). We ran binary logistic regression analyses to detect variables that significantly predicted DASS-21 scores. Results: A sample of 2252 participants was recruited from the general population of Saudi Arabia. The DASS-21 score means and standard deviations for depression and anxiety for the whole sample (10.73 ± 10.29 and 6.98 ± 8.30, respectively) were in the range of mild depression and anxiety. In contrast, the mean DASS-21 stress score was within the normal range (11.97 ± 10.80). The mean stress score for healthcare workers was within the normal range (13.70 ± 10.68) but was significantly higher than the mean score for the public (11.56 ± 10.89; P = 0.0006). Several variables (e.g., age, gender, and history of contact with confirmed COVID-19 cases) were significantly associated with higher DASS-21 scores. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic has created a psychological burden. Therefore, there is an urgent need to implement emergency public health interventions that ameliorate the risk perception of COVID-19 through the dissemination of adequate and targeted health information that could be a successful measure to mitigate the psychological impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

AIM: The primary aim of this study was to standardize the correlated effective dosage of the antidiabetic drug empagliflozin (EMPA) and the antipsychotic drug olanzapine (Ola). BACKGROUND: Atypical antipsychotics are associated with BWG and metabolic disturbances for which many approaches have been used to minimize these issues, including antidiabetic drugs. The antidiabetic drugs have been quite effective in reversing BWG induced by the administration of antipsychotic drugs in patients who have psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to standardize the correlated effective dosage of EMPA and Ola. METHODS: The study was carried out for 28 days to represent the chronic effect of Ola on female Wistar rats. Rats were divided into three groups based on the dose they received: control (vehicle), Ola-4 and Ola-8 (4 and 8 mg/kg/OD, respectively), and EMPA-10 and EMPA-20 (10 and 20 mg/kg/OD, respectively). RESULTS: Both doses of Ola produced a significant increase in the percentage of BWG, however, Ola-4 produced a higher BWG. Also, both the doses of EMPA were able to reverse the effect of Ola-induced BWG; however, EMPA-20 produced a higher reversal in BWG and normalized the rat's body weight. CONCLUSION: We conclude that Ola-4 and EMPA-20 were the most effective dosage for experimental purposes in female Wistar rats. The findings of this study standardized the effective correlated dosage of olanzapine and empagliflozin in female Wistar rats that will help understand the underlying molecular and behavioral mechanisms.
