RESUMEN

The goal of this study was to determine the genetic parameters for growth traits in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) fish of similar age and weight. The data set included monthly measurements of body weight and length from120 fish for a year (1,440 measurements). The study found that weight gain had a heritability estimate of 0.01, while length gain had a heritability estimate of 0.27. There was a high positive correlation (0.84) between weight and length gains. The genetic variance and heritability of body weight decreased with age. This study suggests that breeding programs should select for body weight and weight gain to promote genetic gain in tambaqui. Selecting younger animals can also help reduce costs while still achieving genetic gains.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate patterns of mortality by road transport injury (RTI) in Brazilian municipalities, focused on deaths of motorcyclists, between 2000 and 2018, and their relation with population size and economic status. STUDY DESIGN: This was an ecological epidemiological study with a descriptive and analytical nature. METHODS: The age-standardized RTI mortality rates were calculated for the Brazilian municipalities, referring to the 3-year periods of 2000/2002 (T1), 2009/2011 (T2), and 2016/2018 (T3). The rates were stratified according to macroregion and population size and were compared in terms of percentage variation from one 3-year period to another. The Moran Global and Local indices were used in the spatial point-pattern analysis of the rates. To verify the association with the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, the Spearman correlation coefficient was applied. RESULTS: A decline in RTI mortality rates was found between 2000 and 2018, with the most significant declines observed in municipalities from the South and Southeast regions of Brazil. However, increases were observed among motorcyclists. Clusters of municipalities were detected, which presented high mortality rates among the motorcyclists in the Northeast region and in some states of the North and Midwest regions. The mortality rates showed a negative correlation with the GDP per capita of the Brazilian municipalities. CONCLUSIONS: Although there were decreases in RTI mortality rates between 1990 and 2018, there was a significant increase in deaths among motorcyclists, especially in the Northeast, North, and Midwest regions of the country. Such differences can be explained by unequal growth in the size of the motorcycle fleet in those regions, by less law enforcement capability, and by the implementation of educational actions.

RESUMEN

Introduction. Central pontine myelinolysis is characterized by the occurrence of acute demyelinating lesions of cells in the pons secondary to abrupt oscillations of serum osmolarity. Its exact incidence is not well defined, but studies show a prevalence of 0.25 to 0.5% in the general population, 2.5% in the intensive care unit, and up to 10% in patients with risk factors, such as chronic liver disease and hepatic transplantation, alcoholism, malnutrition, diuretic therapy, electrolyte imbalance, hypoglycemia, and hyperglycemia. Case Report. A 70-year-old white female with extranodal diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (extensive mass on the left anterior chest wall), stage IVA, developed pontine myelinolysis secondary to hypovolemic acute hypernatremia, which occurred due to diarrhea caused by chemotherapy (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and vincristine). Discussion. Pontine myelinolysis occurs most often due to the rapid correction of chronic hyponatremia. But here, we describe a case of the disease secondary to the occurrence of hypovolemic acute hypernatremia in a patient with a hematological malignancy under treatment, who was on chronic treatment with thiazide diuretics and who presented with other electrolyte disturbances as risk factors for the development of pontine myelinolysis.

We studied the clinical, EEG and MRI findings in 19 patients with epilepsy secondary to congenital destructive hemispheric insults. Patients were divided in two groups: 10 with cystic lesions (group 1), and 9 with atrophic lesions (group 2). Seizure and EEG features, as well as developmental sequelae were similar between the two groups, except for the finding that patients of group 2 more commonly presented seizures with more than one semiological type. MRI showed hyperintense T2 signal extending beyond the lesion in almost all patients of both groups, and it was more diffuse in group 2. Associated hippocampal atrophy (HA) was observed in 70% of group 1 patients and 77.7% of group 2, and it was not correlated with duration of epilepsy or seizure frequency. There was a good concordance between HA and electroclinical localization. The high prevalence of associated HA in both groups suggests a common pathogenesis with the more obvious lesion. Our findings indicate that in some of these patients with extensive destructive lesions, there may be a more circumscribed epileptogenic area, particularly in those with cystic lesions and HA, leading to a potential rationale for effective surgical treatment.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study is to characterize the demographic configuration of nursing personnel involved with the Family Health Program (FHP) in three municipalities of the state of São Paulo and analyse their perception about the expected professional profile in order to work in the FHP. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews and the software ETHNOGRAPH was used for initial data analysis, followed by thematic analysis. The themes identified by the subjects in their narratives point to the following "expected profile": there is a perception that workers must be communicative, dedicated, involved, sympathetic and tender. They should be easy to get along with, available and helpful to the population. Although, the results points to a professional profile which contemplates a "condescending" type of assistance, at the same time they point to a new type of health assistance based on humanization and integrality, as well as the construction of citizenship.

RESUMEN

This article is part of an integrated research project called The Organization of Primary Health Care (a perspective for nursing practice). Its objective is to investigate the perception of nursing personnel concerning their practice in family-centered primary health care. This article presents a case study focuses on nursing personnel workers from the Family Health Program (PSF), in the city of Batatais. Data collection was done through semi-structured interviews with those professionals. Thematic analysis of the data was realized in which initial categorization was done with the help of the Ethnograph software. The topics identified in the workers' narratives were: comprehensiveness, health care, bonding and active case-frading. These themes suggested that the work in family-centered care is difficult, therefore it leads to a more comprehensive health care practice in which decision-making is shared with clientele.

RESUMEN

In this article, we examine the effects of classroom characteristics on the interracial friendliness of students in desegregated classrooms. We argue that social psychological processes that affect cross-race sociability are set in motion by the classroom climate, the organization of instruction, and the class racial composition. The effects of these variables on the likelihood of cross-race friendships are observed in longitudinal data from 455 students in 16 fourth- through seventh-grade desegregated classrooms. The results show that classroom characteristics associated with "status-leveling" effects operate differently for black and white students. Ability grouping influences the interracial sociability of white students more than that of blacks, while the academic status of peers affects the cross-race friendships of blacks more than of whites. Race differences in the effects of classroom climate on interracial friendships are also observed.

RESUMEN

Symptoms of motion sickness are sometimes experienced during exposure to optokinetic stimulation. Two experimetns were performed to compare the symptoms of motion sickness elicited when subjects were exposed to incremental changes in optokinetic stimulation while sitting passively and while continuously executing shoulder-to-shoulder head movements. In the first experiment, a fixed head-movement frequency (20 cpm) was used, wheras in the second the subjects varied the frequency of their head movements in order to maintain suppression of illusory self-rotation. In both experiments, subjects in the head-moving condition had fewer and less severe symptoms of motion sickness and experienced illusory self-rotation after longer exposure times and at higher optokinetic velocities than in the head-stationary condition. Subjects in th- head-movement condition of the second experiment increased the frequency of their head movements as the velocity of optokinetic stimulation increased. The symptoms of motion sickness elicited during optokinetic stimulation tended to be dizziness, headache, eye-strain, and stomach awareness appearing in no fixed order. The pattern and constellation of symptoms are unlike those elicited by vestibular stimulation.
