RESUMEN

We probe the separation of ligands from iron tetracarbonyl methyl acrylate (Fe(CO)4(C4H6O2) or Fe(CO)4MA) induced by the interaction with free electrons. The motivation comes from the possible use of this molecule as a nanofabrication precursor and from the corresponding need to understand its elementary reactions fundamental to the electron-induced deposition. We utilize two complementary electron collision setups and support the interpretation of data by quantum chemical calculations. This way, both the dissociative ionization and dissociative electron attachment fragmentation channels are characterized. Considerable differences in the degree of precursor fragmentation in these two channels are observed. Interesting differences also appear when this precursor is compared to structurally similar iron pentacarbonyl. The present findings shed light on the recent electron-induced chemistry of Fe(CO)4MA on a surface under ultrahigh vacuum.

RESUMEN

2-Bromo-1-(3,3-dinitroazetidin-1-yl)ethan-1-one (RRx-001) is a hypoxic cell chemotherapeutics with already demonstrated synergism in combined chemo-radiation therapy. The interaction of the compound with secondary low-energy electrons formed in large amounts during the physico-chemical phase of the irradiation may lead to these synergistic effects. The present study focuses on the first step of RRx-001 interaction with low-energy electrons in which a transient anion is formed and fragmented. Combination of two experiments allows us to disentangle the decay of the RRx-001 anion on different timescales. Sole presence of the electron initiates rapid dissociation of NO2 and HNO2 neutrals while NO2- and Br- anions are produced both directly and via intermediate complexes. Based on our quantum chemical calculations, we propose that bidirectional intersystem crossing between π*(NO2) and σ*(C-Br) states explains the experimental spectra. The fast dynamics monitored will impact the condensed phase chemistry of the anion as well.

A crossed molecular beam, velocity-map ion-imaging apparatus has been used to determine differential cross sections (DCSs), as a function of collider final internal energy, for rotationally inelastic scattering of NO(A2Σ+, v = 0, j = 0.5f1) with N2, CO, and O2, at average collision energies close to 800 cm-1. DCSs are strongly forward scattered for all three colliders for all observed NO(A) final rotational states, N'. For collisions with N2 and CO, the fraction of NO(A) that is scattered sideways and backward increases with increasing N', as does the internal rotational excitation of the colliders, with N2 having the highest internal excitation. In contrast, the DCSs for collisions with O2 are essentially only forward scattered, with little rotational excitation of the O2. The sideways and backward scattering expected from low-impact-parameter collisions, and the rotational excitation expected from the orientational dependence of published van der Waals potential energy surfaces (PESs), are absent in the observed NO(A) + O2 results. This is consistent with the removal of these short-range scattering trajectories via facile electronic quenching of NO(A) by O2, in agreement with the literature determination of the coupled NO-O2 PESs and the associated conical intersections. In contrast, collisions at high-impact parameter that predominately sample the attractive van der Waals minimum do not experience quenching and are inelastically forward scattered with low rotational excitation.

Details of electron-induced chemistry of methyl methacrylate (MMA) upon complexation are revealed by combining gas-phase 2D electron energy loss spectroscopy with electron attachment spectroscopy of isolated MMA and its clusters. We show that even though isolated MMA does not form stable parent anions, it efficiently thermalizes the incident electrons via intramolecular vibrational redistribution, leading to autodetachment of slow electrons. This autodetachment channel is reduced in clusters due to intermolecular energy transfer and stabilization of parent molecular anions. Bond breaking via dissociative electron attachment leads to an extensive range of anion products. The dominant OCH3- channel is accessible via core-excited resonances with threshold above 5 eV, despite the estimated thermodynamic threshold below 3 eV. This changes in clusters, where MnOCH3- anions are observed in a lower-lying resonance due to neutral dissociation of the 1(n, π*) state and electron self-scavenging. The present findings have implications for electron-induced chemistry in lithography with poly(methyl methacrylate).

Cysteine-water cluster cations Cys(H2O)3,6+ and Cys(H2O)3,6H+ are assembled in He droplets and probed by tandem mass spectrometry with collision-induced activation. Benchmark experimental data for this biologically important system are complemented with theory to elucidate the details of the collision-induced activation process. Experimental energy thresholds for successive release of water are compared to water dissociation energies from DFT calculations showing that clusters do not only fragment exclusively by sequential emission of single water molecules but also by the release of small water clusters. Release of clustered water is observed also in the ADMP (atom centered density matrix propagation) molecular dynamics model of small Cys(H2O)3+ and Cys(H2O)3H+ clusters. For large clusters Cys(H2O)6+ and Cys(H2O)6H+ the less computationally demanding statistical Microcanonical Metropolis Monte-Carlo method (M3C) is used to model the experimental fragmentation patterns. We are able to detail the energy redistribution in clusters upon collision activation. In the present case, about two thirds of the collision energy redistribute via an ergodic process, while the remaining one third is transferred into a non-ergodic channel leading to ejection of a single water molecule from the cluster. In contrast to molecular fragmentation, which can be well described by statistical models, modelling of collision-induced activation of weakly bound clusters requires inclusion of non-ergodic processes.

Metronidazole belongs to the class of nitroimidazole molecules and has been considered as a potential radiosensitizer for radiation therapy. During the irradiation of biological tissue, secondary electrons are released that may interact with molecules of the surrounding environment. Here, we present a study of electron attachment to metronidazole that aims to investigate possible reactions in the molecule upon anion formation. Another purpose is to elucidate the effect of microhydration on electron-induced reactions in metronidazole. We use two crossed electron/molecular beam devices with the mass-spectrometric analysis of formed anions. The experiments are supported by quantum chemical calculations on thermodynamic properties such as electron affinities and thresholds of anion formation. For the single molecule, as well as the microhydrated condition, we observe the parent radical anion as the most abundant product anion upon electron attachment. A variety of fragment anions are observed for the isolated molecule, with NO2- as the most abundant fragment species. NO2- and all other fragment anions except weakly abundant OH- are quenched upon microhydration. The relative abundances suggest the parent radical anion of metronidazole as a biologically relevant species after the physicochemical stage of radiation damage. We also conclude from the present results that metronidazole is highly susceptible to low-energy electrons.

Protein posttranslational modifications add great sophistication to biological systems. Citrullination, a key regulatory mechanism in human physiology and pathophysiology, is enigmatic from an evolutionary perspective. Although the citrullinating enzymes peptidylarginine deiminases (PADIs) are ubiquitous across vertebrates, they are absent from yeast, worms, and flies. Based on this distribution PADIs were proposed to have been horizontally transferred, but this has been contested. Here, we map the evolutionary trajectory of PADIs into the animal lineage. We present strong phylogenetic support for a clade encompassing animal and cyanobacterial PADIs that excludes fungal and other bacterial homologs. The animal and cyanobacterial PADI proteins share functionally relevant primary and tertiary synapomorphic sequences that are distinct from a second PADI type present in fungi and actinobacteria. Molecular clock calculations and sequence divergence analyses using the fossil record estimate the last common ancestor of the cyanobacterial and animal PADIs to be less than 1 billion years old. Additionally, under an assumption of vertical descent, PADI sequence change during this evolutionary time frame is anachronistically low, even when compared with products of likely endosymbiont gene transfer, mitochondrial proteins, and some of the most highly conserved sequences in life. The consilience of evidence indicates that PADIs were introduced from cyanobacteria into animals by horizontal gene transfer (HGT). The ancestral cyanobacterial PADI is enzymatically active and can citrullinate eukaryotic proteins, suggesting that the PADI HGT event introduced a new catalytic capability into the regulatory repertoire of animals. This study reveals the unusual evolution of a pleiotropic protein modification.

Electron attachment and its equivalent in complex environments, single-electron reduction, are important in many biological processes. Here, we experimentally study the electron attachment to favipiravir, a well-known antiviral agent. Electron attachment spectroscopy is used to explore the energetics of associative (AEA) and dissociative (DEA) electron attachment to isolated favipiravir. AEA dominates the interaction and the yields of the fragment anions after DEA are an order of magnitude lower than that of the parent anion. DEA primary proceeds via decomposition of the CONH2 functional group, which is supported by reaction threshold calculations using ab initio methods. Mass spectrometry of small favipiravir-water clusters demonstrates that a lot of energy is transferred to the solvent upon electron attachment. The energy gained upon electron attachment, and the high stability of the parent anion were previously suggested as important properties for the action of several electron-affinic radiosensitizers. If any of these mechanisms cause synergism in chemo-radiation therapy, favipiravir could be repurposed as a radiosensitizer.

We report a dissociative electron attachment study to 2-furoic acid (C5H4O3) isolated in a gas phase, which is a model molecule consisting of a carboxylic group and a furan ring. Dissociation of furan by low energy electrons is accessible only via electronic excited Feshbach resonances at energies of incident electrons above 5 eV. On the other hand, carboxylic acids are well-known to dissociate via attachment of electrons at subexcitation energies. Here we elucidate how the electron and proton transfer reactions induced by carboxylation influence stability of the furan ring. Overlap of the furan and carboxyl π orbitals results in transformation of the nondissociative π2 resonance of the furan ring to a dissociative resonance. The interpretation of hydrogen transfer reactions is supported by experimental studies of 3-methyl-2-furoic and 5-methyl-2-furoic acids (C6H6O3) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

The reduction of 4-nitrothiophenol (NTP) to 4-4'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) on laser illuminated noble metal nanoparticles is one of the most widely studied plasmon mediated reactions. The reaction is most likely triggered by a transfer of low energy electrons from the nanoparticle to the adsorbed molecules. Besides the formation of DMAB, dissociative side reactions of NTP have also been observed. Here, we present a crossed electron-molecular beam study of free electron attachment to isolated NTP in the gas-phase. Negative ion yields are recorded as a function of the electron energy, which helps to assess the accessibility of single electron reduction pathways after photon induced electron transfer from nanoparticles. The dominant process observed with isolated NTP is associative electron attachment leading to the formation of the parent anion of NTP. Dissociative electron attachment pathways could be revealed with much lower intensities, leading mainly to the loss of functional groups. The energy gained by one electron reduction of NTP may also enhance the desorption of NTP from nanoparticles. Our supporting experiments with small clusters, then, show that further reaction steps are necessary after electron attachment to produce DMAB on the surfaces.

This prospective single-centre study describes the patient-reported outcomes following open in situ decompression for cubital tunnel syndrome. The Quick version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire and patient satisfaction scores were collected over a 3-year period. Outcomes were available for 77 patients at a mean of 17 months (11-27 months) postoperatively. The mean scores improved significantly from 39 to 30 postoperatively. The score change correlated strongly and significantly with postoperative satisfaction. Sixty-six patients (86%) were satisfied. Patients with clinical evidence of weakness at presentation had significantly lower satisfaction scores than those without. By reporting functional improvement and high levels of patient satisfaction in a large series, this study supports the use of in situ decompression for cubital tunnel syndrome. The outcomes for the patients with weakness and atrophy of ulnar nerve innervated muscles before surgery are less satisfactory. Level of evidence: III.

Populus euphratica Oliv. is a widespread phreatophytic tree species that forms riparian forests in (hyper-)arid regions of Central Asia. Its recruitment strongly relies on vegetative propagation from 'root suckers' that emerge from underground root spacers. The water transport through the spacers, although decisive for emerging ramets, has only rarely been quantified, but is crucial for the vegetative regeneration of the forests. In root spacers with different diameters collected from a mature poplar forest in northwest China, we calculated the hydraulic conductivity (kc ) from anatomical investigations on the basis of a modified Hagen-Poiseuille equation and measured it (km ) with a perfusion solution in the laboratory. The km values were compared with the water use by young and mature P. euphratica trees determined in previous studies. We obtained a significant correlation between km and kc (which, however, was higher by at least one order of magnitude). Due to the extensive occurrence of tyloses, particularly in older conduits and thicker spacers, and because the conduit area did not increase with spacer diameter, neither kc nor km increased with an increase in spacer diameter. The water supply through the spacers would be sufficient to meet the water demand even of mature trees. Our results provide a mechanistic explanation for the observed occurrence of P. euphratica clones across large areas and, provided that they are also valid for stands with larger distances to the water table, for the sustained growth and vegetative reproduction of P. euphratica stands growing at larger distances from the groundwater.

This prospective single-centre study describes the functional outcomes, satisfaction and health-related quality of life after open revision carpal tunnel decompression for recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome. The QuickDASH, patient satisfaction and EuroQol-5 dimensions questionnaires were collected preoperatively and postoperatively over a 5-year period (2013-2018). The median time to revision was 13.3 years (range 3.9-35.4 years; interquartile range 7.2-15.9 years). Outcomes were available for 14 hands in 13 patients at a mean of 20 months after revision surgery. The mean preoperative and postoperative QuickDASH scores were 55 and 29, respectively, and the mean improvement in QuickDASH was 26. The mean improvement in EuroQol-5 dimensions score was 0.1, and 13 of the 14 patients were satisfied. The net promoter score was 85. This study confirms that patients undergoing revision open carpal tunnel decompression for recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome experience a significant improvement in function and health-related quality of life. We study the reactivity of misonidazole with low-energy electrons in a water environment combining experiment and theoretical modelling. The environment is modelled by sequential hydration of misonidazole clusters in vacuum. The well-defined experimental conditions enable computational modeling of the observed reactions. While the NO 2 - dissociative electron attachment channel is suppressed, as also observed previously for other molecules, the OH - channel remains open. Such behavior is enabled by the high hydration energy of OH - and ring formation in the neutral radical co-fragment. These observations help to understand the mechanism of bio-reductive drug action. Electron-induced formation of covalent bonds is then important not only for biological processes but may find applications also in technology.

The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term outcome of simple trapeziectomy by a single surgeon and to compare this with pre-operative function. Two hundred and five patients completed the shortened disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand questionnaire (QuickDASH) and the EuroQoL five-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D) scores at a mean of 8.2 (range 3.5-17) years after simple trapeziectomy. There were no pre-operative scores available, so case controls were selected from our prospective database to compare pre- and post-operative patient-reported outcome measures. The mean QuickDASH score of the post-operative matched group was 37 (SD 17.0) and the mean EQ-5D was 0.56 (SD 0.31). The mean QuickDASH score of the pre-operative group was 54 (SD 17.0). The mean difference in QuickDASH between the pre- and post-operative groups was 17 (95% CI: 8 to 26, p = 0.0003). This study demonstrated a significant and sustained improvement in patient-reported function after simple trapeziectomy. It supports that simple trapeziectomy is a simple, safe and effective treatment for advanced trapeziometacarpal joint arthritis. Level of evidence: IV.

Stereodynamic descriptions of molecular collisions concern the angular correlations that exist between vector properties of the motion of the participating species, including their velocities and rotational angular momenta. Measurements of vector correlations provide a unique view of the forces acting during collisions, and are a stringent test of electronic-structure calculations of molecular interactions. Here, we present direct measurement of the four-vector correlation between initial and final relative velocities and rotational angular momenta in a molecular collision. This property, which quantifies the extent to which a molecule retains a memory of its initial sense of rotation, or handedness, as a function of scattering angle, yields insight into the dynamics of a molecular collision. We report non-intuitive changes in the handedness for specific states and scattering angles, reproduced by classical and quantum scattering calculations. Comparison to calculations on different ab initio potential energy surfaces demonstrates this measurement's exquisite sensitivity to the underlying intermolecular forces.

We have performed a crossed molecular beam velocity-map ion imaging study of state-to-state rotational energy transfer of NO(A2Σ+, v = 0, N = 0, j = 0.5) in collisions with N2 and have measured rotational angular momentum polarization dependent images of product NO(A) rotational levels N' = 3 and 5-11 for collisions at an average energy of 797 cm-1. We present an extension of our previously published [T. F. M. Luxford et al., J. Chem. Phys. 145, 174 304 (2016)] image analysis which includes the effect of rotational excitation of the unobserved collision partner and critically evaluate this methodology. We report differential cross sections and angle-resolved angular momentum alignment moments for NO(A) levels N' = 3 and 5-11 as a function of the rotational excitation of the coincident N2 partner. The scattering dynamics of NO(A) + N2 share similarities with those previously reported for NO(A) + Ne and Ar, although with detailed differences. We use comparison of the measurements reported here to the scattering of NO(A) with Ne, and the known NO(A)-Ne potential energy surface, to draw conclusions about the previously unknown NO(A)-N2 potential.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the outcomes of cemented sockets in young patients (<50 years) requiring a total hip replacement (THR) compared to older patients (>50 years) having the same procedure, under the same surgeon between June 2005 and May 2009. METHODS: Prosthesis survivorship rates, patient outcomes and radiological findings were compared between a consecutive series of 56 young patients (mean 42, range 25-49) and 56 older patients (mean 69, range 53-81) that underwent a primary THR using a cemented Stryker® Exeter™ Contemporary™ flanged cup. The minimum follow-up was 5 years. RESULTS: No significant difference was observed between the groups' Oxford Hip Scores (p = 0.078) or satisfaction scores (p = 0.67). Worst case scenario analysis for revision, failure or lost to follow-up showed 94.6% survival in the <50 year olds and 92.9% survival in the >50 year olds at 5 years. This study demonstrates no significant difference in patient outcomes, survivorship or radiographic findings at a minimum of 5 years between patients <50 years old and those >50 years old undergoing THR with a cemented socket. CONCLUSIONS: We believe the current trend towards uncemented cups may be driven by marketing rather than by evidence of improved outcomes. Cemented sockets provide very good outcomes for patients of all ages.
