RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy target receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 1 (ROR1) is broadly expressed in hematologic and solid tumors, however clinically-characterized ROR1-CAR T cells with single chain variable fragment (scFv)-R12 targeting domain failed to induce durable remissions, in part due to the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). Herein, we describe the development of an improved ROR1-CAR with a novel, fully human scFv9 targeting domain, and augmented with TGFßRIIDN armor protective against a major TME factor, transforming growth factor beta (TGFß). METHODS: CAR T cells were generated by lentiviral transduction of enriched CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and the novel scFv9-based ROR1-CAR-1 was compared with the clinically-characterized ROR1-R12-scFv-based CAR-2 in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: CAR-1 T cells exhibited greater CAR surface density than CAR-2 when normalized for %CAR+, and produced more interferon (IFN)-γ tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-2 in response to hematologic (Jeko-1, RPMI-8226) and solid (OVCAR-3, Capan-2, NCI-H226) tumor cell lines in vitro. In vivo, CAR-1 and CAR-2 both cleared hematologic Jeko-1 lymphoma xenografts, however only CAR-1 fully rejected ovarian solid OVCAR-3 tumors, concordantly with greater expansion of CD8+ and CD4+CAR T cells, and enrichment for central and effector memory phenotype. When equipped with TGFß-protective armor TGFßRIIDN, CAR-1 T cells resisted TGFß-mediated pSmad2/3 phosphorylation, as compared with CAR-1 alone. When co-cultured with ROR-1+ AsPC-1 pancreatic cancer line in the presence of TGFß1, armored CAR-1 demonstrated improved recovery of killing function, IFN-γ, TNF-α and IL-2 secretion. In mouse AsPC-1 pancreatic tumor xenografts overexpressing TGFß1, armored CAR-1, in contrast to CAR-1 alone, achieved complete tumor remissions, and yielded accelerated expansion of CAR+ T cells, diminished circulating active TGFß1, and no apparent toxicity or weight loss. Unexpectedly, in AsPC-1 xenografts without TGFß overexpression, TGFß1 production was specifically induced by ROR-1-CAR T cells interaction with ROR-1 positive tumor cells, and the TGFßRIIDN armor conferred accelerated tumor clearance. CONCLUSIONS: The novel fully human TGFßRIIDN-armored ROR1-CAR-1 T cells are highly potent against ROR1-positive tumors, and withstand the inhibitory effects of TGFß in solid TME. Moreover, TGFß1 induction represents a novel, CAR-induced checkpoint in the solid TME, which can be circumvented by co-expressing the TGßRIIDN armor on T cells.

RESUMEN

Parabens (p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters) commonly used preservatives (in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and foods) can pose potential effects on environmental health. In this study, seven parabens were quantified in marine fish samples using an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (UHPLC-MS/MS) system. Parabens in the fish samples were extracted and purified by a rapid, simple, and effective procedure comprising sample homogenization with solvent, solid-phase extraction clean-up, and solvent evaporation. Results demonstrated that the recoveries of seven compounds (with relative standard deviation < 15%) were 88-103% in matrix-spike samples and 86-105% in surrogate standards. The method detection limits and method quantification limits of seven parabens were 0.015-0.030 and 0.045-0.090 ng/g-ww (wet weight), respectively. The optimized method was applied to measure the concentration of parabens in the 37 marine fish samples collected from Vietnam coastal waters. The concentration ranges of seven parabens found in round scad and greater lizardfish samples were 6.82-25.3 ng/g ww and 6.21-17.2 ng/g-ww, respectively. Among parabens, methylparaben accounted for the highest contribution in both fish species (43.2 and 44.9%, respectively). Based on the measured concentrations of parabens in marine fish samples, the estimated daily intake was calculated for children and adults with the corresponding values of 0.0477 µg/kg/day and 0.0119 µg/kg/day, respectively. However, the presence of parabens in Vietnamese marine fish may not pose a significant risk to human health.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the social support (SS) and colorectal cancer (CRC) care utilization of patients in the central region of Vietnam. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional cohort study in which the cohort was defined as all residential patients diagnosed with CRC in a tertiary hospital, Hue Central Hospital (HCH), in central Vietnam from 2013 to 2019. Social support was considered the main independent variable and was evaluated using the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS), a self-administered 19-item SS survey. MOS-SSS is a widely used scale for assessing social support in CRC patients because it is brief, easy to use, reliable, and valid. In this study, we considered a data framework with a multilevel structure that included the patient level and duration of diagnosis as the second level. We estimated the magnitude of SS and CRC-specific treatment modalities using multilevel mixed-effects (MM) models under a hierarchical approach. RESULTS: The findings indicated that CRC care utilization rates were 89.9%, 48.5%, and 30.6% for surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, respectively. The overall trend of SS decreased significantly and affected the CRC care utilization. We found a positive effects of overall SS, as well as emotional and tangible support, on the number of hospitalization admissions and chemotherapy utilization. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the use of the MOS-SSS should be continued in the long term for CRC patients to enhance medical accessibility and care utilization.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Over the past 2 years, the COVID-19 pandemic has placed enormous pressure on the health care industry. There has been an increase in demand and, at the same time, a shortage of supplies. This has shown that supply chain management in the health care industry cannot be taken for granted. Furthermore, the health care industry is also facing other major challenges, such as the current labor market shortage. In the literature, the Internet of Things (IoT) is highlighted as an effective tool to build a more resilient and efficient supply chain that can manage these challenges. Although using IoT in supply chain management has been extensively examined in other types of supply chains, its use in the health care supply chain has largely been overlooked. Given that the health care supply chain, compared to others, is more complex and is under growing pressure, a more in-depth understanding of the opportunities brought by IoT is necessary. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to address this research gap by identifying and ranking the drivers of and barriers to implementing IoT in the health care supply chain. METHODS: We conducted a 2-stage study. In the first, exploratory stage, a total of 12 semistructured interviews were conducted to identify drivers and barriers. In the second, confirmatory stage, a total of 26 health care supply chain professionals were asked in a survey to rank the drivers and barriers. RESULTS: The results show that there are multiple financial, operational, strategy-related, and supply chain-related drivers for implementing IoT. Similarly, there are various financial, strategy-related, supply chain-related, technology-related, and user-related barriers. The findings also show that supply chain-related drivers (eg, increased transparency, traceability, and collaboration with suppliers) are the strongest drivers, while financial barriers (eg, high implementation costs and difficulties in building a business case) are the biggest barriers to overcome. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study add to the limited literature regarding IoT in the health care supply chain by empirically identifying the most important drivers and barriers to IoT implementation. The ranking of drivers and barriers provides guidance for practitioners and health care provider leaders intending to implement IoT in the health care supply chain.

RESUMEN

Distribution patterns of 10 phthalic acid diesters (PAEs) and four cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes (cVMSs) were investigated in fine particulate matter (PM0.1 and PM0.5) collected from Bac Ninh, an industrial province in Vietnam during September-October in 2021. Total concentrations of PAEs found in PM0.1 and PM0.5 were in the ranges of 1.76-372 (median: 34.0 ng/m3) and 2.23-895 ng/m3 (median: 15.4 ng/m3), respectively. Among PAEs, di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) was the most abundant compound found in PM0.1, whereas, di-2-(ethyl)hexyl phthalate (DEHP) was measured at the highest concentration in PM0.5. Total concentrations of cVMSs measured in PM0.1 and PM0.5 were in the ranges of method quantification limit (MQL)-203 (median: 2.10 ng/m3) and MQL-537 ng/m3 (median: 0.389 ng/m3), respectively. Among cVMSs, decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) was found at the highest concentration in both PM0.1 and PM0.5 fractions of particulate matter. The concentration ratios between PAEs and cVMSs in PM0.1/PM0.5 were greater than 1 (except di-n-octyl phthalate: DnOP), suggesting that these chemicals tend to sorb to PM0.1 more preferentially than PM0.5. Among sampling locations, high concentrations of PAEs and cVMSs were found at traffic intersections (Que Vo district) and a craft village (Tu Son city). Relatively stronger correlations existed between cVMSs pairs in PM0.1 and PM0.5 (correlation coefficient: 0.73-1) than those of PAEs (-0.83-0.90). The human exposure doses to PAEs and cVMSs through inhalation of particulate matter were estimated based on the measured concentrations in PM0.1 and PM0.5 fractions. The estimated exposure doses of PAEs and cVMSs for infants (7.1 ng/kg-bw/d and 2.5 ng/kg-bw/d) were higher than those for adults (2.6 ng/kg-bw/d and 0.9 ng/kg-bw/d).

RESUMEN

Background: Dorsal arachnoid webs constitute abnormal formations of arachnoid that tend to occur in the upper thoracic spine and can lead to spinal cord displacement. Patients typically present with back pain, sensory disturbances, and weakness. It may also obstruct the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow, leading to syringomyelia. In magnetic resonance (MR) studies, the "scalpel sign" is a classical finding, and it may also be accompanied by syringomyelia attributed to CSF flow. Definitive surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment. Case Description: A 31-year-old male presented with mild weakness in the right leg and diffuse lower extremity sensory changes. The MR showed the typical "scalpel sign" at the T7 level consistent with diagnosing a spinal arachnoid web. He underwent a T6-T8 laminotomy for lysis of the web and decompression of the thoracic cord. Postoperatively, his symptoms improved markedly. Conclusion: Surgical resection is the treatment of choice when an arachnoid web is documented on an MR and correlates with the patient's clinical symptoms/signs.

RESUMEN

This research combined ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) and natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) to recover phenolic and flavonoid components from mangosteen rind. The antioxidant activities were determined using DPPH, ABTS+, and hydroxyl assays. NADES prepared from lactic and 1,2-propanediol had the highest extraction efficiency based on the total flavonoid content (TFC) and phenolic contents (TPC). Single-factor experiments were employed to assess the influence of UAE conditions (liquid-to-solid ratio, temperature, water content in NADES, and time) on TFC, TPC, and antioxidant activities. NADES-based UAE conditions were optimized using response surface methodology with the Box-Behnken design model on five dependent responses (TPC, TFC, DPPH, ABTS, and OH). The optimal conditions for the lactic-1,2-Propanediol-based UAE process were 76.7 ml liquid/g solid with 30.3% of water content at 57.5 °C for 9.1 min. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to examine the surface morphology of mangosteen rind before and after sonication. This study proposes an efficient, green, and practical approach for recovering phenolics and flavonoids from mangosteen rinds.

RESUMEN

In the present study, distribution characteristics of ten typical phthalic acid esters (PAEs) were investigated in 90 air samples collected from the urban areas in Hanoi, Vietnam from May to August 2022. The total concentrations of PAEs in indoor and ambient air samples were in the range of 320-4770 ng/m3 and 35.9-133 ng/m3, respectively. Total concentrations of PAEs in indoor air were about one order of magnitude higher than those in ambient air. Among PAEs studied, di-(2-ethyl)hexyl phthalate (DEHP) was measured at the highest levels in all air samples, followed by di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP). The PAEs concentrations in air samples collected from laboratories at nighttime were significantly higher than those during daytime (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the distributions of PAEs in various micro-environments in the same house are no statistically significant difference. The median exposure doses of PAEs through inhalation for adults and children were 248 and 725 ng/kg-bw/d, respectively. These exposure levels were still lower than the respective reference doses (RfD) proposed by the US EPA for selected compounds such as diethyl phthalate (DEP), DnBP, and DEHP.

RESUMEN

Plant disease limits crop production, and host genetic resistance is a major means of control. Plant pathogenic Ralstonia causes bacterial wilt disease and is best controlled with resistant varieties. Tomato wilt resistance is multigenic, yet the mechanisms of resistance remain largely unknown. We combined metaRNAseq analysis and functional experiments to identify core Ralstonia-responsive genes and the corresponding biological mechanisms in wilt-resistant and wilt-susceptible tomatoes. While trade-offs between growth and defence are common in plants, wilt-resistant plants activated both defence responses and growth processes. Measurements of innate immunity and growth, including reactive oxygen species production and root system growth, respectively, validated that resistant plants executed defence-related processes at the same time they increased root growth. In contrast, in wilt-susceptible plants roots senesced and root surface area declined following Ralstonia inoculation. Wilt-resistant plants repressed genes predicted to negatively regulate water stress tolerance, while susceptible plants repressed genes predicted to promote water stress tolerance. Our results suggest that wilt-resistant plants can simultaneously promote growth and defence by investing in resources that act in both processes. Infected susceptible plants activate defences, but fail to grow and so succumb to Ralstonia, likely because they cannot tolerate the water stress induced by vascular wilt.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: We undertook this study to examine the functional basis for epistasis between endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase 1 (ERAP1) and HLA-B27 in experimental spondyloarthritis (SpA). METHODS: ERAP1-knockout rats were created using genome editing and bred with HLA-B27/human ß2 -microglobulin-transgenic (HLA-B27-Tg) rats and HLA-B7-Tg rats. The effects of ERAP1 deficiency on HLA allotypes were determined using immunoprecipitation and immunoblotting, flow cytometry, allogeneic T cell proliferation assays, and gene expression analyses. Animals were examined for clinical features of disease, and tissue was assessed by histology. RESULTS: ERAP1 deficiency increased the ratio of folded to unfolded (ß2 m-free) HLA-B27 heavy chains, while having the opposite effect on HLA-B7. Furthermore, in rats with ERAP1 deficiency, HLA-B27 misfolding was reduced, while free HLA-B27 heavy chain dimers on the cell surface and monomers were increased. The effects of ERAP1 deficiency persisted during up-regulation of HLA-B27 and led to a reduction in endoplasmic reticulum stress. ERAP1 deficiency reduced the prevalence of arthritis in HLA-B27-Tg rats by two-thirds without reducing gastrointestinal inflammation. Dendritic cell abnormalities attributed to the presence of HLA-B27, including reduced allogeneic T cell stimulation and loss of CD103-positive/major histocompatibility complex class II-positive cells, were not rescued by ERAP1 deficiency, while excess Il23a up-regulation was mitigated. CONCLUSION: ERAP1 deficiency reduced HLA-B27 misfolding and improved folding while having opposing effects on HLA-B7. The finding that HLA-B27-Tg rats had partial protection against SpA in this study is consistent with genetic evidence that loss-of-function and/or reduced expression of ERAP1 reduces the risk of ankylosing spondylitis. Functional studies support the concept that the effects of ERAP1 on HLA-B27 and SpA may be a consequence of how peptides affect the biology of this allotype rather than their role as antigenic determinants.

RESUMEN

Comprehensive studies on emerging contaminants like volatile methyl siloxanes in settled dust from different micro-environments are still limited. In this study, concentrations and distribution of cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (CVMSs) including D3, D4, D5, and D6 were examined in indoor dust samples collected from various micro-environments in northern and central Vietnam. Concentrations of total CVMSs in the dust samples ranged from 86.0 to 5890 (median 755) ng/g and decreased in the order: waste processing workshops (median 1560; range 329-5890) > common houses (650; 115-1680) > university classrooms (480; 86.0-1540) > vehicle repair shops (295; 126-1950) ng/g. This observation suggests that informal waste processing activities are sources of CVMSs. Among the studied CVMSs, D5 was the most predominant compound (41 ± 14%), followed by D6 (26 ± 13%), D4 (23 ± 12%), and D3 (11 ± 11%). Moderate positive correlations between D3/D4, D4/D5, and D5/D6 were found. Median daily intake doses of D3, D4, D5, and D6 through dust ingestion were 0.016, 0.051, 0.11, and 0.054 ng/kg/d, respectively, which were comparable to water consumption and markedly lower than the air inhalation pathway.

RESUMEN

Settled dust samples from Vietnamese end-of-life vehicle (ELV) processing, urban, and rural areas were analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and other current-use brominated flame retardants (BFRs). PBDE levels found in dust samples collected from ELV workshops (median 390; range 120-520 ng/g) and nearby living areas (110; 36-650 ng/g) were generally higher than those in common house dust (25-170 ng/g). BDE-209 was the most predominant congener detected in almost all the samples, indicating extensive application of products containing deca-BDE mixtures. The dust samples from ELV workplaces showed a more abundance of lower brominated congeners (e.g., tetra- to hexa-BDEs) that may originate from car interior materials treated by penta-BDE formulations. Concentrations of other BFRs decreased in the order urban > rural > ELV dust, reflecting the current use of these compounds in new consumer products. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) were the major alternative BFRs. Daily intake doses and hazard indexes of PBDEs and some other BFRs through dust ingestion were estimated and showed acceptable levels of risk. However, more comprehensive risk assessment considering multiple exposure pathways should be performed, especially for ELV workers and children in the ELV processing and urban areas.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Parenteral penicillin G (PENG) and oral amoxicillin (AMOX) are recommended as treatment for pediatric community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). With recent epidemiologic penicillin susceptibility data for Streptococcus pneumoniae, the most common etiology of CAP, the objective of this study was to evaluate optimal dosing regimens of PENG and AMOX based on population pharmacokinetics linked to current susceptibility data. METHODS: Using NONMEM v7.3, Monte Carlo simulations (N = 10,000) were conducted for AMOX 15 mg/kg/dose PO every 8 h (standard-dose), AMOX 45 mg/kg/dose PO every 12 h (high-dose), and PENG 62,500 units/kg/day IV every 6 h using six virtual subjects with ages spanning 3 months to 15 years old. The probability of target attainment (PTA) was determined for both serum and epithelial lining fluid (ELF) to achieve free drug concentrations above the minimum inhibitory concentration (%fT>MIC) across the population of pneumococci for 30%-50% of the dosing interval. RESULTS: In 2018, all 21 (100%) pneumococcal isolates were susceptible to both PENG and AMOX based on Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI; MIC at 2 mg/L) breakpoints, and 15 of 21 (71%) were susceptible based on EUCAST (MIC at 0.5 mg/L) breakpoints. As compared to CLSI, EUCAST breakpoints consistently achieved higher PTA for all antibiotic regimens. At 50% fT>MIC in the serum at the susceptible MICs, standard-dose AMOX achieved >4% PTA (CLSI) and >86% PTA (EUCAST); high-dose AMOX achieved >73% PTA (CLSI) and >99% PTA (EUCAST); and PENG achieved 0% PTA (using CLSI) and 100% PTA (using EUCAST). Standard-dose AMOX, high-dose AMOX, and PENG achieved >71%, >93%, and 100% PTA, respectively, in the serum at 30%-50% fT>MIC when each patient was stochastically linked to an MIC based on the frequency distribution of national susceptibility data. The PTA was consistently lower in ELF as compared with serum for all regimens. CONCLUSION: Based on the recent rates of resistance, antibiotic doses evaluated provide appropriate exposure for pediatric CAP based on the serum and ELF data associated with predicted clinical and microbiologic success for pneumococcus. High-dose AMOX may still be required to treat pediatric CAP, especially if using CLSI breakpoints. Ongoing surveillance for resistance is essential.

RESUMEN

Splenic vein thrombosis (SVT) is a well-recognized complication of acute and chronic pancreatitis. It is associated with complications of significant gastrointestinal bleeding and high morbidity if the thrombus propagates. There is a need to consider several factors in choosing whether to anticoagulate the patient. We report a case of SVT in a patient with a previous history of pancreatitis who presented with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting to the hospital. At the hospital, a CT scan revealed SVT. This case highlights the importance of undergoing further studies regarding anticoagulation for treating SVT in patients at risk for gastrointestinal bleeding.

RESUMEN

During the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Zika Virus Response, birth defects surveillance programs adapted to monitor birth defects potentially related to Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy. Pregnancy outcomes occurring during January 2016 to June 2017 in 22 U.S. states and territories were used to estimate the prevalence of those brain and eye defects potentially related to ZIKV. Jurisdictions were divided into three groups: areas with widespread ZIKV transmission, areas with limited local ZIKV transmission, and areas without local ZIKV transmission. Prevalence estimates for selected brain and eye defects and microcephaly per 10,000 live births were estimated. Prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Poisson regression for areas with widespread and limited ZIKV transmission compared with areas without local ZIKV transmission. Defects with significantly higher prevalence in areas of widespread transmission were pooled, and PRs were calculated by quarter, comparing subsequent quarters to the first quarter (January-March 2016). Nine defects had significantly higher prevalence in areas of widespread transmission. The highest PRs were seen in intracranial calcifications (PR = 12.6, 95% CI [7.4, 21.3]), chorioretinal abnormalities (12.5 [7.1, 22.3]), brainstem abnormalities (9.3 [4.7, 18.4]), and cerebral/cortical atrophy (6.7 [4.2, 10.8]). The PR of the nine pooled defects was significantly higher in three quarters in areas with widespread transmission. The largest difference in prevalence was observed for defects consistently reported in infants with congenital ZIKV infection. Birth defects surveillance programs could consider monitoring a subset of birth defects potentially related to ZIKV in pregnancy.

RESUMEN

Utilizing beneficial microbes for crop improvement is one strategy to achieve sustainable agriculture. However, identifying microbial isolates that promote crop growth is challenging, in part because using bacterial taxonomy to predict an isolate's effect on plant growth may not be reliable. The overall aim of this work was to determine whether in vitro functional traits of bacteria were predictive of their in planta impact. We isolated 183 bacterial endophytes from field-grown roots of two tomato species, Solanum lycopersicum and S. pimpinellifolium. Sixty isolates were screened for six in vitro functional traits: auxin production, siderophore production, phosphate solubilization, antagonism to a soilborne pathogen, and the presence of two antimicrobial metabolite synthesis genes. Hierarchical clustering of the isolates based on the in vitro functional traits identified several groups of isolates sharing similar traits. We called these groups 'functional groups'. To understand how in vitro functional traits of bacteria relate to their impact on plants, we inoculated three isolates from each of the functional groups on tomato seedlings. Isolates within the same functional group promoted plant growth at similar levels, regardless of their host origin or taxonomy. Together, our results demonstrate the importance of examining root endophyte functions for improving crop production.

RESUMEN

Beginning in 1955, when the saline injection was first described to prevent transmural injury during polyp fulguration, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) has grown exponentially, both in scope and in practice. Because EMR is an organ-preserving technique even for large polyps, this allows for comparable outcomes to surgery, but substantially improved cost savings and significantly reduced morbidity and mortality. To achieve this, however, one must master the 4 fundamental components that are critical to the success of EMR- time, team, tools, and technique. This article aims to provide a compendium of state of the art updates within the field of endoluminal resection.

RESUMEN

Pollution status and distribution characteristics of ten typical phthalic acid esters (PAEs) were investigated in 36 sediment samples collected from three rivers in Northern Vietnam from June to October 2020. The total concentrations of PAEs in sediment samples collected from the To Lich River (n = 9), the Nhue River (n = 12), and the Day River (n = 15) were in ranges of 11,000-125,000 ng/g-dwt (mean/median: 50,000/42,200 ng/g-dwt), 2140-89,900 ng/g-dwt (mean/median: 29,300/20,700 ng/g-dwt), and 1140-43,100 ng/g-dwt (mean/median: 13,800/10,400 ng/g-dwt), respectively. Among ten PAEs studied, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was found at the highest levels in all samples meanwhile dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), and dipropyl phthalate (DPP) were detected at low frequency and concentration. Significant correlations have existed between the median-chain (C4-C7) PAE pairs in sediment samples. Due to the high accumulation in the sediments, the median-chain PAEs had a higher ecological risk than the short-chain (C1-C3) PAEs. These contaminants may present a longstanding influence on organisms and ecosystems.

RESUMEN

Seven parabens including methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), iso-propylparaben (iPrP), butylparaben (BuP), benzylparaben (BzP), and heptylparaben (HepP) were determined in bottled water, tap water, river water, lake water, and wastewater samples collected from Hanoi, Vietnam, using solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The highest total concentration of parabens were measured in wastewater (range, 27.3-1050 ng/L; mean/median, 268/175 ng/L), followed by lake water (range, 18.0-254 ng/L; mean/median, 51.7/58.5 ng/L), river water (range, 16.5-52.1 ng/L; mean/median, 32.1/42.6 ng/L), tap water (range, 5.01-54.3 ng/L; mean/median, 28.6/41.1 ng/L), and bottled water (range, 1.56-39.9 ng/L; mean/median, 6.92/9.19 ng/L). Methylparaben and propylparaben were the predominant compounds found in all samples. The mean estimated human exposure dose of parabens through drinking bottled water was 0.27 ng/kg-bw/day, which is 6 orders of magnitude below the safety threshold recommended by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additive in 1974 (10 mg/kg-bw/day). Concentrations of parabens measured in river water, lake water, and wastewater samples were assessed to pose low to moderate ecological risks to aquatic organisms (0.1 < RQ < 1). Methyl, ethyl, and propyl parabens exhibited significant correlations in water samples.

RESUMEN

In this report, four cVMSs including hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3), octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) were determined in 85 sediment samples collected from three rivers in northern Vietnam during the period from May to November 2020. Total mean concentrations of cVMSs ranged from 75.4 to 15,000 ng/g-dw. The highest levels of cVMS were found in sediment samples collected from the To Lich River (range, 260-15,000 ng/g-dw; median, 2840 ng/g-dw), followed by the Nhue River (range, 188-6800 ng/g-dw; median, 1370 ng/g-dw), and the Day River (range, 75.4-4600 ng/g-dw; median, 666 ng/g-dw). Among cVMSs, decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) was found at the highest levels in all samples and ranged from 9.00 to 11,000 ng/g-dw. Significant correlations exist between the concentrations of D4/D6 and D5/D6 pairs in river sediment samples. Although the calculated ecological risk was not high, the presence of cVMSs in the sediment raises concerns about the impact on aquatic life because of their long-term accumulation capacity.
