RESUMEN

AIM: In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the secondary traumatic stress and coping experiences of psychiatric nurses who care for people who have experienced psychological trauma with a phenomenological approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 psychiatric nurses residing in Turkey using the phenomenological research method. The criterion sampling method was used to reach the sample group. Interviews continued until data saturation was achieved, and all interviews were audio-recorded and then transcribed. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The study was conducted and reported using the COREQ checklist. FINDINGS: In the analysis of the data, three themes (difficulties in caring for people who have experienced trauma, the effects of caring for people who have experienced trauma on the individual and coping, reflections of secondary trauma on the profession) and seven sub-themes (mental, physical, social, psychosocial difficulties and coping, quality of care, professional and organisational aspects) were identified. CONCLUSION: As a result of the study, it was determined that secondary traumatic stress was observed in psychiatric nurses caring for individuals who experienced psychological trauma. It was determined that caring for people who have experienced psychological trauma can negatively affect nurses psychosocially, and individuals have difficulty coping. In line with the results of the study, it is thought that necessary intervention programs should be created for nurses experiencing secondary traumatic stress.

RESUMEN

Background: Cultural beliefs significantly shape societal attitudes toward mental illness, and these social attitudes profoundly impact help-seeking behaviors. Therefore, it is important to focus on understanding and addressing these social behaviors. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chronic mental illness interpretations based on culture and religious beliefs on non-medical help-seeking behaviors among patients in Türkiye. Methods: The study was conducted from September to October 2023 using an inductive qualitative approach. In-depth face-to-face interviews were carried out with individuals diagnosed with chronic mental illness and their relatives, registered in a state-owned Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) in Türkiye. Using purposive sampling, 13 individuals who met the criteria were interviewed. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes. Results: Three main themes and eight sub-themes were identified, including the reasons for seeking non-medical help (psychological challenges, subjective norms, physical requirements), factors contributing to seeking non-medical help (predisposing factors, enabling factors, and myths), and reflections on the benefits of non-medical practices (perceived physical benefits, perceived psychological benefits). Conclusions: It was concluded that individuals with chronic mental illness and their relatives living in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye engaged in non-medical help-seeking behaviors and mostly turned to traditional religious practices. Culture and religious beliefs emerged as primary factors leading patients to seek non-medical treatment approaches. Consequently, there is a perceived need to explore non-medical alternative methods across various mental health settings and with diverse samples in future research endeavors.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The enduring impact of children being subjected to sexual abuse is characterized by lasting traumatic effects. AIMS: This study aims to assess the influence of perceived parental attitudes on the incidence of sexual abuse in children who have experienced such abuse, comparing them with a control group. METHODS: The research took place at the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) of a hospital in northern Turkey and in the pediatric outpatient clinics of the same institution. The study evaluated 101 children who were exposed to sexual abuse and 100 children who were not. Data collection took place between November 2022 and August 2023. The study employed a 'Descriptive Information Form' and the 'Parental Attitude Scale' for both case and control groups. The t-test for independent samples, descriptive statistics, and logistic regression analysis were used for data analysis. RESULTS: Analysis of scores from the Parental Attitude Scale revealed significantly lower mean scores in acceptance-involvement and strictness-supervision in the case group (p < .05). The mean scores for 'acceptance-involvement' (X¯ = 22.82 ± 6.26, X¯ = 25.71 ± 3.89) were highest in the case and control groups. Neglectful attitude (38.6%) was more prevalent in the case group, while the control group exhibited a higher frequency of democratic attitude (37%). In terms of predictors, acceptance-involvement (OR = 1.091, p = .005) and maternal employment (OR = 4.410, p < .001) were identified as the most significant predictors of exposed to sexual abuse. The study's Cronbach's alpha value for the scale was α = .743. CONCLUSION: The study's findings on parental attitudes suggest a potential connection between children's exposure to sexual abuse and inadequate parental acceptance, involvement, supervision, and control.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the metaphorical perceptions and cognitive structures of Turkish nursing students related to the impact of the global climate crisis on their profession. METHODS: Researchers adopted a qualitative approach centered on metaphor analysis and involved 40 Turkish nursing students enrolled in programs in Türkiye during October 2023. Using metaphor analysis and techniques involving writing and drawing, the study uncovered how these students perceive and cognitively structure the influence of the global climate crisis on their nursing careers. The interview form featured the metaphor expression "The reflection of the global climate crisis on nursing is like … because …," while the drawing component prompted students to determine their perspectives on the climate crisis's impact on nursing through concept drawings. The research adhered to the COREQ checklist. RESULTS: The study revealed that nursing students generated 22 metaphors each through written and drawing techniques. Written metaphors were grouped into five categories: psychosocial challenges faced by nurses, patient populations, diseases and coping, burdens on the health system, and the growing importance of various fields within nursing. Drawing technique metaphors were grouped into four categories: nurses and the difficulties they face, the impact of the global climate crisis on the world, the impact of the global climate crisis on the healthcare sector, and the roles and responsibilities of nurses. CONCLUSIONS: While nursing students expressed diverse opinions, their concerns about the reflection of the global climate crisis on nursing yielded similar emotional responses. Metaphors are mostly focused on psychosocial challenges faced by nurses, the patient population, diseases, and coping mechanisms. The findings underscored nursing students' concerns about the global climate crisis's impact on both their profession and the broader community.

RESUMEN

The study aimed to evaluate the ethical dilemmas faced by nurses who provide care to patients with hematologic cancer and determine their coping mechanisms using a phenomenological approach. This qualitative study was conducted with 35 nurses employed in clinics specializing in hematologic cancer patient care, living in diverse regions of Turkey, using semistructured, in-depth interviews through the WhatsApp mobile application. The snowball sampling technique was utilized to identify participants, and interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were recorded and subsequently transcribed. Data analysis was conducted using Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method, with the study adhering to the COREQ (Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research) checklist for reporting. In the analysis of the data, 2 categories (ethical dilemma situations and coping experiences) and 6 subthemes (treatment, care, professional values and beliefs, emotions, struggling with emotional burdens, and psychosocial approach) emerged. According to the results, nurses responsible for hematologic cancer patients struggle with ethical dilemmas in healthcare delivery and face challenges in effectively addressing them, which could potentially impact the quality of healthcare provided by nurses.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to reveal the effect of the motivational interviewing on the quality of life and self-efficacy behaviors of individuals with chronic diseases. MATERIAL-METHOD: For this meta-analysis study, PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and YÖK Theses databases were searched in January-May 2021 without year limitation. As a result, 38 studies were included in the study: 23 for the quality of life variable, and 21 for the self-efficacy behaviors variable (in 6 studies, both variables were examined together). The data were synthesized with meta-analysis and narrative methods. The total sample size of the studies is 25,425. RESULTS: This meta-analysis study showed that the motivational interviewing applied to individuals with chronic diseases changed their quality of life (SMD: 0.296, %95 CI: 0.054-0.537, Z = 2.402, p = .016, I2 = %95). The type of chronic disease, measurement tool, sample group, disease group, age range, and whether the motivational interviewer was a nurse or not changed the effect size of the motivational interviewing on the quality of life. The self-efficacy score average of the experimental group to which motivational interviewing was applied was statistically similar to that of the control group (SMD: 0.141, %95 CI: -0.065, 0.347; Z = 1.346, p = .178, I2 = %87). CONCLUSIONS: As a result of the meta-analysis, it was determined that the use of motivational interviewing increased the quality of life level of individuals with chronic diseases. However, it is thought that more research is needed because some studies were conducted with small sample size and prepost test design. The results of the study may provide guidance on the interventions to be used in improving the quality of life of individuals with chronic diseases.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of nurses' psychosocial interventions for addressing sensory deprivation in intensive care units (ICUs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, CINAHL, Embase, Cochrane Library, and YÖK Thesis Center databases was conducted from August 2023 to May 2024, without any temporal restrictions. In addition, a physical search was made in the university library for grey literature. RESULTS: The study revealed that nurses' psychosocial interventions significantly improved patients' level of consciousness (SMD = 1.042, %95 CI = 0.716 to 1.369; Z = 6.25; p < .05) and sleep quality in ICUs (SMD=1.21, 95% CI= 0.232 to 1.810; Z = 2.49; p < .05). The effectiveness of psychosocial interventions varied based on the type of intervention, patient age, ICU type, patient group, and intervention duration. Notably, auditory stimuli and aromatherapy demonstrated particularly high effect sizes, significantly enhancing patients' levels of consciousness and sleep quality. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, psychosocial interventions aimed at reducing sensory deprivation in intensive care units exert beneficial effects on individuals, notably enhancing their level of consciousness and improving sleep quality.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Violence against women has numerous devastating effects. Exposure to violence not only impacts women but also affects their children both physically and psychosocially. AIMS: The study aimed to evaluate the psychosocial problems of children living with their mothers in women's shelters from the mothers' perspective with a phenomenological approach. METHODS: Utilizing the phenomenological research method, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 individuals in a women's shelter in a province in northern Türkiye. The criterion sampling method, a purposive sampling technique, was employed to select participants. Interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were audio recorded and then transcribed, and thematic analysis was applied to analyze the data. The study adhered to the COREQ checklist for reporting. RESULTS: The data analysis revealed four main categories (effects of violence on the mother, actions taken to protect children from violence, effects of violence and staying in a shelter on the child, and psychosocial needs for the protection of the child's mental health in the shelter) and 10 sub-themes (psychological effects, physical effects, social effects, domestic actions, organizational actions, psychological effects, physical effects, social effects, support system, and coping). CONCLUSION: The study concluded that violence significantly impacted the mental, physical, and social well-being of both women and children, posing challenges to their ability to cope with the aftermath. Women exerted considerable effort in protecting their children from violence, and they needed psychosocial support to ensure the well-being of their children's mental health during their stay in shelters.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To determine the practices and coping experiences of the relatives of patients with pressure injuries (PIs). METHODS: The authors used a qualitative, phenomenologic research design. They interviewed 20 relatives of patients with PIs face-to-face using an in-depth semistructured interview form. The data were analyzed using the Colaizzi phenomenologic method. RESULTS: Three categories, 8 main themes, and 22 subthemes emerged from the interviews. The category of "the impact of the need for care on the lives of the patient's relatives" was analyzed according to psychological, social, and physical effects. In the category of "practices to prevent pressure injuries," two themes emerged: practices toward the patient and the environment. Relatives of individuals with PIs have psychological, physical, and social needs. CONCLUSIONS: Providing care to a patient with PIs has psychological, social, and physical effects on the patient's relatives. The care burden mostly affects these caregivers negatively, and they mainly need time for themselves and moral and companion support.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the perspective of nurses in Turkey towards the global climate crisis and its impact on mental health using a qualitative approach. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This study was conducted from August to September 2023 with 35 nurses living in seven regions of Turkey using an inductive qualitative approach. The researchers employed the snowball sampling method to select participants. Interviews with the participants were conducted until data saturation was reached. Thematic analysis was used to emerge themes. RESULTS: The findings revealed five main themes (perception of the global climate crisis, effects of the global climate crisis, effects of the global climate crisis on mental health, reflections of the global climate crisis on nursing and nurses' views on prevention and intervention studies for the global climate crisis). Also, the findings revealed 12 sub-themes (physical outcomes, mental outcomes, direct and indirect impacts, psychosocial effects and personal, national and international-based reflections). CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that nurses exhibit genuine concern for the global climate crisis and experience psychological effects related to this pressing environmental issue. Nurses are keenly aware of their responsibility to safeguard the planet and demonstrate a strong sense of concern for the state of the world. IMPACT: It is evident that nurses, being prominent advocates for sustainability, are cognizant of their responsibility to protect the planet and demonstrate genuine apprehension for the state of the world. IMPLICATIONS: Nurses play a crucial role, as they make up 60% of the global healthcare workforce and are often the frontline healthcare professionals during natural disasters. It is vital to elucidate and clarify the terminology concerning the relationship between the climate crisis and the mental health of nurses, to determine the scope of this relationship and to make recommendations for future research areas. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or Public Contribution.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: It was aimed to determine the effect level of nonpharmacological methods applied by nurses to patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit on the duration of delirium. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this study, relevant studies were accessed by searching in July-October 2022. After the necessary exclusions were made, 14 studies were included in the study. The total sample size of the studies was 1123. RESULTS: According to the results, nonpharmacological interventions applied by nurses to intensive care patients were found to reduce the duration of delirium (SMD: - 0.625, 95% CI: - 1.1040-0.210; Z = - 2.950, p = 0.003, I2 = 93.119%). The country of the study (SMD: - 0.047, p = 0.001) and the types of nonpharmacological interventions used (SMD: - 0.062, p = 0.000) influenced the effect size of modulators on the duration of delirium in ICU patients. CONCLUSION: Nonpharmacological interventions applied by nurses, who have significant responsibilities in the protection and promotion of health, were found to reduce the duration of delirium in intensive care patients. This study shows that nurses, one of the main components of the multidisciplinary team in intensive care, are successful when they apply nonpharmacological interventions well.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study was carried out to determine the effect of burnout and moral sensitivity levels of surgical unit nurses on their job satisfaction. DESIGN: A descriptive and correlational design study. METHODS: The population consisted of 268 nurses working in health institutions in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey. The data were collected online between 1 and 30 April, 2022 using a sociodemographic data form, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale, and the Moral Sensitivity Scale. Pearson correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate the data. FINDINGS: The nurses' moral sensitivity scale mean score was 105.2 ± 18.8, and the Minnesota job satisfaction scale mean score was 3.3 ± 0.7. The participants' mean emotional exhaustion score was 25.4 ± 7.3, the depersonalization score average was 15.7 ± 4.6, and the personal accomplishment mean score was 20.5 ± 6.7. The factors affecting the job satisfaction of nurses were found to be moral sensitivity, personal accomplishment, and satisfaction with the unit they worked. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses had high levels of burnout due to emotional exhaustion, one of the subdimensions of burnout, and moderate levels of burnout due to depersonalization and personal accomplishment. The moral sensitivity and job satisfaction of nurses are moderate. As the nurses' accomplishment and ethical sensitivity levels increased and their emotional exhaustion levels decreased, their job satisfaction levels increased.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the level of impact of post-disaster psychotherapeutic interventions. MATERIAL METHOD: For this systematic review and meta-analysis study, the studies were accessed through the databases of PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and YÖK Thesis Center in July-September 2022 without any year limitation. As a result of the examinations, 27 studies were included in the study. The data were synthesized by meta-analysis and narrative methods. RESULTS: According to the results of this systematic review and meta-analysis, post-disaster psychotherapeutic interventions were found to be effective (SMD:-0838, %95 CI: -1,087- 0.588; Z = -6588, p = 0.000, I2 = %95,249). Individuals who have undergone psychotherapeutic interventions experience either no or fewer post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. The country/continent of the research, the types of psychotherapeutic interventions, the type of disaster, and the measurement tool used influence the effectiveness of the psychotherapeutic interventions. Psychotherapeutic interventions applied especially after earthquakes, one of the types of disasters, were found to be effective. In addition, EMDR, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, and exposure method were found to reduce posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in individuals in the post-disaster period. CONCLUSION: Post-disaster psychotherapeutic interventions have positive impacts on people and improve their mental health.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out in a cross-sectional and correlational design to explore the relationship between anxiety levels and anger expression styles of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The sample of this cross-sectional and correlational type of study consisted of 618 nurses calculated with the snowball sampling method. The data were collected using a questionnaire developed by the researchers, the state anxiety inventory, and the trait anger and anger expression scale and was conducted between May 10 and 20, 2020 using an online questionnaire form. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, the Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to evaluate the data. RESULTS: The mean age of nurses was 34.98 ± 8.36 years (min: 20; max: 53), 87.4% were women, and 81.7% experienced a high level of anxiety. The anger scores of the participants were found to be 20.04 ± 4.43, the anger-in score was 15.55 ± 3.34, the anger-out score was 14.01 ± 2.87, and the anger control score was 22.93 ± 3.6. Being married, the presence of chronic disease, living in the Marmara region, working shifts, presence of an individual over 65 years of age at home, and having a COVID-19 test were found to be risk factors that significantly increase nurses' anxieties. A significant positive relationship was found between the anxiety scores, trait anger (r = 0.249, p = 0.000), anger-in (r = 0.174, p = 0.000) and anger-out (r = 0.205, p = 0.000) scores of nurses, and a significant negative relationship was found between the anxiety scores and anger control (r = 0.249, p = 0.000) score. CONCLUSION: The study revealed that in the COVID-19 pandemic the anxiety levels of the nurses were high and that the high anxiety level negatively affected the style of anger expression, but the nurses were successful in maintaining anger control. In line with these results, it is important that nurses develop effective coping strategies to reduce their anxiety levels and that they receive increased levels of support in managing anger expression.
