RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the potential reduction in contrast medium utilization using photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT). One PCD-CT scan (CT1) and three conventional (non-PCD-CT) CT scans (CT2-CT4) were performed using a multi-energy CT phantom that contained eight rods with different iodine concentrations (0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mg/ml). The CT values of the seven groups (CT1 for 40, 50, 60, and 70 keV; and CT2-4) were measured. Noise and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were assessed for the eight rods at various iodine concentrations. CT2 and CT1 (40 keV) respectively required 20 mg/ml and 5 mg/ml of iodine, indicating that a comparable contrast effect could be obtained with approximately one-fourth of the contrast medium amount. The standard deviation values increased at lower energy levels irrespective of the iodine concentration. The CNR exhibited a decreasing trend with lower iodine concentrations, while it remained relatively stable across all iodine levels (40-70 keV). This study demonstrated that virtual monochromatic 40 keV images offer a similar contrast effect with a reduced contrast medium amount when compared to conventional CT systems at 120 kV.

PURPOSE: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is characterized by necrosis of the jawbone with intraoral bacterial infection and has a significant negative impact on oral health-related quality of life. Risk factors for the onset are unknown, and definitive therapeutic approaches have not yet been defined. A case-control study at a single institution in Mishima City was conducted. The purpose of this study was to examine in detail the factors that contribute to the development of MRONJ. METHODS: Medical records of MRONJ patients who visited Mishima Dental Center, Nihon University School of Dentistry, during the period 2015-2021 were extracted. Counter-matched sampling design was used to select participants matched for sex, age, and smoking for this nested case-control study. The incidence factors were statistically examined by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Twelve MRONJ patients were used as cases and 32 controls were matched. After adjustment for potential confounders, injectable bisphosphonates (aOR = 24.5; 95% CI = 1.05, 575.0; P < 0.05) were significantly associated with the development of MRONJ. CONCLUSION: High-dose bisphosphonates may be a risk factor for the development of MRONJ. Patients who use these products require careful prophylactic dental treatment against inflammatory diseases, and dentists and physicians should maintain close communication.

Background/purpose: Bone resorption inhibitors, such as bisphosphonates (BPs) and anti-receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand antibodies (denosumab; Dmab), are used to treat osteoporosis and effectively reduce the risk of fracture. However, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) has been reported as a rare adverse effect. Invasive tooth extraction procedures are reportedly a factor in the development of MRONJ. In this study, we aimed to retrospectively observe and clinically examine the effect of medication status on MRONJ development after tooth extraction in patients receiving drug treatment for osteoporosis. Materials and methods: This study was conducted among patients who visited our hospital between December 2015 and December 2021. We collected and analyzed the medical information of patients who underwent dental extractions while using osteoporosis medications, including oral and injectable BPs and Dmab. Results: Among antiresorptive medication users, 40 patients (70 teeth) underwent extraction. The mean duration of BP/Dmab use was 40.4 months, and the mean duration of drug holiday was 6.9 months. MRONJ after tooth extraction was not seen in BP users, but we observed two cases in Dmab users. A significant difference in MRONJ development was confirmed with the use of injectable compared with oral medication administration (odds ratio=5.01). Conclusion: The use of injectable bone resorption inhibitors was associated with a higher risk of developing MRONJ. The route of administration, duration of medication, and withdrawal period should be carefully considered to prevent MRONJ after tooth extraction.

OBJECTIVE: Postmenopausal women are at increased risk of metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Therefore, the chemoprevention of postmenopausal changes in health via dietary supplements is important. Syringic acid (SA) is a phenolic compound present in the fruit of the assai palm, Euterpe oleracea, and in the mycelium of the shiitake mushroom, Lentinula edodes. This compound shows no affinity for estrogen receptors and may exert disease-preventive effects. Reportedly, dietary SA ameliorates high-fat diet-induced obesity in mice; however, its effects on estrogen deficiency-induced obesity are still unclear. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether and how dietary SA affects these factors in ovariectomized (OVX) mice. METHODS: Ten-week-old OVX mice were fed SA-containing diets (100 mg/kg body weight/d) for 12 weeks. Their body weights, food intake, and uterus weights as well as other parameters were measured and comparisons were made with mice in the control group. RESULTS: Dietary SA did not affect the body weight, food intake, or uterus weight of OVX mice over the study period; however, the SA-fed group showed lower fat mass (ie, visceral, subcutaneous, and total fat) than the OVX-control group (11.1 ±â€Š3.3 vs. 8.3 ±â€Š2.4, P < 0.05; 7.9 ±â€Š1.1 vs. 5.9 ±â€Š1.6, P < 0.05; 19.0 ±â€Š4.2 vs. 14.1 ±â€Š3.8, P < 0.05, respectively). Furthermore, blood analysis revealed that SA-treatment resulted in a dose-dependent decrease and increase in serum triglyceride (59.2 ±â€Š8.3 vs. 43.9 ±â€Š12.2 mg/dL P < 0.05) and adiponectin (7.7 ±â€Š0.3 vs. 9.5 ±â€Š0.6 µg/mL, P < 0.05) levels, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the SA diet improves lipid metabolism without affecting the uterus in OVX mice. Therefore, dietary SA has potential applicability for the prevention of postmenopausal obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The effect of ellagic acid (EA), a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound, on the secretion of apolipoproteins from human hepatocytes, HepG2, was investigated. The levels of apoB and apoA-1 secreted in the cell culture medium were determined by sandwich ELISA. EA did not affect cell viability at the tested concentrations (up to 50 µM). EA suppressed the secretion of apoB and enhanced that of apoA-1 from HepG2 cells. However, cellular apoB levels were increased, suggesting that EA inhibited the trafficking of apoB during the process of secretion. In contrast, the increase in the cellular levels of apoA-1 was consistent with its secreted levels. These results indicate that EA inhibits the secretion of apoB from hepatocytes and increases the secretion of apoA-1. Both of these effects are beneficial for lipoprotein metabolism in the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases. The detailed mechanism underlying these effects of EA on lipoprotein metabolism should be elucidated in the future, but this naturally occurring polyphenolic compound might be antihyperlipidemic. Based on these results, EA is suggested as a candidate food-derived compound for the prevention of hyperlipidemia.

In this study, we fed obese model mice black soybean seed coat powder (BSCP) and evaluated the antiobesity effects. As a control, normal yellow soybean seed coat powder (YSCP) was used. C57BL/6J, a high-fat diet-induced obesity model mouse, was fed a high-fat diet containing BSCP or YSCP (20% fat) to induce obesity. The results showed that in the BSCP group, it caused significant suppression of body weight gain and suppression of white adipose tissue weight compared with the YSCP group. Moreover, it significantly decreased serum leptin levels, which correlated with visceral fat mass, and increased antidiabetic adipocytokine and adiponectin levels. Therefore, this suggests the pigmented components contained in BSCP have an antiobesity effect in obese model mice. It is suggested that this material, which can be prepared without extraction with an organic solvent and is suitable for use as a food material, could be a functional food material with a practicable antiobesity effect.

Influences of depression symptoms on the sweet taste threshold were investigated in healthy college students (30 males and 40 females). Depression symptoms were scored by SDS (Self-Rating Depression Scale), and anxiety levels by STAI (State- and Trait-Anxiety Inventory). Recognition thresholds for sucrose were determined. In female students, the menstrual phase on the day of the experiment was self-reported. Depression symptoms, anxiety levels, and the recognition threshold for sucrose were not different among the 3 groups, i.e. males, females in the follicular phase, and females in the luteal phase. Depression symptoms were positively correlated with state and trait anxiety in all groups. The sweet taste threshold was inversely correlated with depression symptoms (r=-0.472, p=0.031) and trait anxiety (r=-0.506, p=0.019) in females in the luteal phase. In males as well as females in the follicular phase, however, no correlation between sweet taste threshold and depression was found. The results show that the recognition threshold for sucrose reduces with increased depression in females with a higher anxiety trait, but only in the luteal phase. It is hypothesized that brain regions, which spatially overlap and are responsible for both aversive emotions and gustatory processing, are susceptible to periodic changes in gonadal hormones due to the menstrual cycle.

We have previously reported that state anxiety scores were positively correlated with postural sway while standing upright and gazing at a visual target (Ohno et al., 2004 [16]). The present study examines the effect of anticipatory anxiety and visual input on postural control in healthy individuals. An unpredictable aversive sound (100dB SPL) was delivered in order to induce anticipatory anxiety. Participants were asked to stand upright on a force plate with their eyes open and closed, and their center of pressure (COP) was measured. Analysis of the postural parameters revealed that the path lengths of the COP and the enveloped areas were greater in the anticipatory situation with the aversive sound than in the silent situation. Fast Fourier transform analysis showed that the frequency component related to vestibular inputs (0.1-1.0Hz) was increased during the anticipatory situation. The lower frequency (<0.1Hz) component was decreased in the medio-lateral axis during anticipation with the eyes closed due to shifting mean power frequencies to high frequency. The results suggest that anticipatory anxiety in healthy participants amplified the sway regardless of whether the eyes were open or closed, and that the vestibular inputs greatly influenced the amplification of postural sway.

During pregnancy, the physical and mental states greatly change. We investigated the influences of pregnancy and anxiety on postural control in pregnant women (P) standing upright in the late trimester. An analysis of posturograms revealed that the area of body sway and length of antero-posterior body sway were greater in P than those in non-pregnant controls (NP). No difference was found in the medio-lateral body sway between P and NP. Fast Fourier transform analysis of body sway showed that the percentile power of the 1.0-10.0Hz band in the medio-lateral axis was smaller in P than in NP irrespective of whether the eyes were open or closed. P were divided into a high (HA) and low (LA) anxiety group on the basis of state anxiety scored by Spielberger's State- and Trait-Anxiety Inventory. A positive correlation was identified between state anxiety and the area of body sway in HA standing with eyes open. This correlation was diminished when the eyes were closed. Body sway of over 1Hz is generally stabilized by somatosensory input, therefore, the results show that body sway in the medio-lateral axis is stabilized in P by increasing the sensitivity to somatosensory cues. High anxiety during pregnancy destabilizes the standing posture when the eyes are open. The correlation between anxiety and body sway revealed by our previous studies in college students was also confirmed in P, suggesting that humans with high anxiety abstract visual cues differently from those with low anxiety.

Underground water in volcanic areas contains vanadium when the basalt layer exists among igneous rocks. The concentration of vanadium in drinking water sometimes exceeds 0.8 microM in these areas, however, the physiological effects of vanadium, especially non-toxic effects, at concentrations lower than 1 microM are unknown. In the present experiments, we examined the effect of pentavalent vanadium and tetravalent vanadium at 0.8 and 8.0 microM concentrations on the recognition threshold to taste substances in healthy college students. Pentavalent vanadium, ammonium vanadate, lowered the sweet taste threshold to glucose at 0.8 and 8.0 microM as well. Tetravalent vanadium, vanadium sulfate, did not alter the threshold to glucose either at 8.0 microM or at 0.8 microM. Ammonium vanadate also decreased the sweet taste threshold to L-proline at 8.0 microM. Ammonium vanadate did not influence the sour taste threshold to hydrogen chloride. Neither ammonium sulfate nor ammonium bicarbonate altered the sweet taste threshold to glucose. Therefore, the effect of ammonium vanadate on the sweet taste threshold is attained by vanadium but not by ammonium. It was concluded that pentavalent vanadium at 0.8 microM intensifies the sweet taste sense to glucose rather specifically. We have first shown the physiological effect of vanadium at the concentration of the underground water level.

To examine the possibility that anxiety affects the control of postural balance, state anxiety, and body sway during orthostatic standing were measured twice in college students with an interval of 1 month. Correlations between the changes in state anxiety and the parameters of body sway were examined by Pearson's correlation analysis. The changes in the enveloped area of body sway and in the maximum length of the antero-posterior body sway showed a positive correlation with the changes in state anxiety (r = 0.543 and 0.659, respectively). The data showed that an increase in anxiety caused instability in the control of postural balance. These correlations were abolished when the eyes were closed. In conclusion, anxiety affects the processing of visual input and influences the net performance of postural control.

We examined the possibility that lumbar skin warming can increase gastrointestinal motility by investigating the electrogastrogram (EGG), blood pressure, and heart rate with psychometric ratings in healthy humans. Scores of mood state profiles showed that lumbar skin warming (42 degrees C, 20 min) decreased tension-anxiety, depression, anger-hostility, fatigue, and confusion of the participants. A multiple bandpass filter analysis of EGGs showed that a postural transition from orthostatic to supine for measurement caused an increase in dominant frequency of 25-29% towards the frequencies of the normal interdigestive migrating motor complex (IMC). The spectral power of the IMC band, 2.55-3.05 cycles/min, was increased by 20 min-warming, reflecting the increase in gastric contractility. No increase in the spectral power was observed in the time-matched control group without skin warming. Therefore, an increase in contractility is a characteristic of lumbar skin warming. The systolic blood pressure increased by 15% during warm stimulation. Interbeat intervals were not influenced by warm stimulation. An analysis of interbeat intervals by a fast Fourier transform method showed that the cardiac sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves did not play a major role in raising the blood pressure. Vasoconstriction of the mesenteric artery was therefore considered to cause a blood pressure increase during warming. It is hypothesized that vasoconstriction of the visceral arteries by lumbar skin warming increases the blood pressure and gastrointestinal contractility.
