RESUMEN

Rotifers possess complex morphologies despite their microscopic size and simple appearance. Part of this complexity is hidden in the structure of their organs, which may be cellular or syncytial. Surprisingly, organs that are cellular in one taxon can be syncytial in another. Pedal glands are widespread across Rotifera and function in substrate attachment and/or egg brooding. These glands are normally absent in Asplanchna, which lack feet and toes that function as outlets for pedal glandular secretions in other rotifers. Here, we describe the ultrastructure of a pedal gland that is singular and syncytial in Asplanchna aff. herricki, but is normally paired and cellular in all other rotifers. Asplanchna aff. herricki has a single large pedal gland that is active and secretory; it has a bipartite, binucleate, syncytial body and a cytosol filled with rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi, and several types of secretory vesicles. The most abundant vesicle type is large and contains a spherical electron-dense secretion that appears to be produced through homotypic fusion of condensing vesicles produced by the Golgi. The vesicles appear to undergo a phase transition from condensed to decondensed along their pathway toward the gland lumen. Decondensation changes the contents to a mucin-like matrix that is eventually exocytosed in a "kiss-and-run" fashion with the plasma membrane of the gland lumen. Exocytosed mucus enters the gland lumen and exits through an epithelial duct that is an extension of the syncytial integument. This results in mucus that extends from the rotifer as a long string as the animal swims through the water. The function of this mucus is unknown, but we speculate it may function in temporary attachment, prey capture, or floatation.

A scalable platform to synthesize ultrathin heavy metals may enable high-efficiency charge-to-spin conversion for next-generation spintronics. Here, we report the synthesis of air-stable, epitaxially registered monolayer Pb underneath graphene on SiC (0001) by confinement heteroepitaxy (CHet). Diffraction, spectroscopy, and microscopy reveal that CHet-based Pb intercalation predominantly exhibits a mottled hexagonal superstructure due to an ordered network of Frenkel-Kontorova-like domain walls. The system's air stability enables ex situ spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) measurements that demonstrate charge-to-spin conversion in graphene/Pb/ferromagnet heterostructures with a 1.5× increase in the effective field ratio compared to control samples.

Contact engineering on monolayer layer (ML) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is considered the most challenging problem toward using these materials as a transistor channel in future advanced technology nodes. The typically observed strong Fermi-level pinning induced in part by the reaction of the source/drain contact metal and the ML TMD frequently results in a large Schottky barrier height, which limits the electrical performance of ML TMD field-effect transistors (FETs). However, at a microscopic level, little is known about how interface defects or reaction sites impact the electrical performance of ML TMD FETs. In this work, we have performed statistically meaningful electrical measurements on at least 120 FETs combined with careful surface analysis to unveil contact resistance dependence on interface chemistry. In particular, we achieved a low contact resistance for ML MoS2 FETs with ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV, 3 × 10-11 mbar) deposited Ni contacts, ∼500 Ω·µm, which is 5 times lower than the contact resistance achieved when deposited under high-vacuum (HV, 3 × 10-6 mbar) conditions. These electrical results strongly correlate with our surface analysis observations. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed significant bonding species between Ni and MoS2 under UHV conditions compared to that under HV. We also studied the Bi/MoS2 interface under UHV and HV deposition conditions. Different from the case of Ni, we do not observe a difference in contact resistance or interface chemistry between contacts deposited under UHV and HV. Finally, this article also explores the thermal stability and reliability of the two contact metals employed here.

Diapausing embryos encased within cladoceran ephippia result from sexual reproduction and increase genetic diversity. They are also important means by which species bypass harsh environmental conditions and disperse in space and time. Once released, ephippia usually sink to the benthos and remain there until hatching. Using the Sars' method (incubating sediments to identify cladoceran hatchlings), ephippial egg bank biodiversity can be evaluated. Yet, even when samples are incubated under a variety of conditions, it is not possible to warrant that all have hatched. Few keys are available that facilitate the identification of cladocerans by using only ephippial morphology. Our goal was to analyze some cladoceran ephippia from Mexico, to develop a means to identify them using easily recognizable characteristics. Ephippia of 23 cladoceran species from waters in Aguascalientes (México) in 11 genera (Alona, Biapertura, Ceriodaphnia, Chydorus, Daphnia, Dunhevedia, Ilyocryptus, Macrothrix, Moina, Pleuroxus, and Simocephalus) were analyzed. In our analysis six morphological features were selected that permitted the identification of ephippia to species(-group) level. The results demonstrate that with a proper catalog of features, some ephippia can be identified.

Background: Lower density of carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin (L/Z) in the macula (i.e., macular pigment) has been linked to greater risk for age-related eye disease. Objectives: We evaluated whether macular pigment optical density (MPOD) was associated with manifest primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) among older women in the Carotenoids in Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (CAREDS2). Methods: MPOD was measured with customized heterochromatic flicker photometry in women who attended CAREDS2 (2016-2019) and CAREDS1 (2001-2004) study visits. Manifest POAG at CAREDS2 was assessed using visual fields, disc photos, optical coherence tomography, and medical records. Age-adjusted linear and logistic regression models were used to investigate the cross-sectional association between POAG and MPOD at CAREDS2, and MPOD measured 15 years earlier at CAREDS1. Results: Among 426 CAREDS2 participants (mean age: 80 y; range: 69-98 y), 26 eyes with manifest POAG from 26 participants were identified. Glaucomatous eyes had 25% lower MPOD compared to nonglaucomatous eyes [mean (SE): 0.40 (0.05) compared with 0.53 (0.01)] optical density units (ODU), respectively (P = 0.01). Compared with MPOD quartile 1, odds for POAG were lower for women in quartiles 2-4 (P-trend = 0.01). After excluding eyes with age-related macular degeneration, associations were similar but not statistically significant (P-trend = 0.16). Results were similar for MPOD measured at CAREDS1. Conclusions: Our results add to growing evidence that low MPOD may be a novel glaucoma risk factor and support further studies to assess the utility of dietary interventions for glaucoma prevention.

Iron is an essential micronutrient that is necessary for proper cognitive function. However, the dose-response relationship between body iron status and cognitive function remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between serum ferritin concentrations, an indicator of body iron status, and cognitive function in older adults. Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999 -2002 in the United States, nationally representative data was collected from 2,567 adults aged 60 years and older who had objectively measured serum ferritin levels and cognitive performance. High ferritin levels were defined as a serum ferritin level >200 ng/mL in women and >300 ng/mL in men. Low ferritin levels were defined as a serum ferritin level <30 ng/mL. The digit symbol substitution test (DSST) was employed to assess cognitive function. Multivariable logistic regression analyses with survey weights were performed after the DSST was dichotomized at the median score. The weighted prevalence of adults with normal, low, and high serum ferritin levels were 73.98%, 9.12%, and 16.91%, respectively. A U-shaped association between serum ferritin concentrations and cognitive task performance was observed. After adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle, and C-reactive protein factors, the odds ratio (95% confidence intervals) for lower cognitive performance was 1.39 (1.11, 1.74) in adults with high ferritin levels and 1.38 (0.86, 2.22) in adults with low ferritin levels, compared with those with normal ferritin levels. The association between serum ferritin levels and lower cognitive performance was stronger in adults aged 60 to 69 years old than those aged 70 years and older. In conclusion, in a nationally representative sample of older adults in the United States, a high serum ferritin level was significantly associated with worse cognitive task performance. Thus, the relationship between low serum ferritin concentrations and cognitive task performance warrants further investigation.

Bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) comprises >10% of total adipose mass in healthy humans. It increases in diverse conditions, including ageing, obesity, osteoporosis, glucocorticoid therapy, and notably, during caloric restriction (CR). BMAT potentially influences skeletal, metabolic, and immune functions, but the mechanisms of BMAT expansion remain poorly understood. Our hypothesis is that, during CR, excessive glucocorticoid activity drives BMAT expansion. The enzyme 11ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11ß-HSD1) amplifies glucocorticoid activity by catalysing intracellular regeneration of active glucocorticoids from inert 11-keto forms. Mice lacking 11ß-HSD1 resist metabolic dysregulation and bone loss during exogenous glucocorticoid excess; thus, we hypothesised that 11ß-HSD1 knockout mice would also resist excessive glucocorticoid action during CR, thereby restrining BMAT expansion and bone loss. To test this, we first confirmed that 11ß-HSD1 is expressed in mouse and human bone marrow. We then investigated the effects of CR in male and female control and 11ß-HSD1 knockout mice from 9 to 15 weeks of age. CR increased Hsd11b1 mRNA in adipose tissue and bone marrow. Deletion of Hsd11b1 did not alter bone or BMAT characteristics in mice fed a control diet and had little effect on tibial bone microarchitecture during CR. Notably, Hsd11b1 deletion attenuated the CR-induced increases in BMAT and prevented increases in bone marrow corticosterone in males but not females. This was not associated with suppression of glucocorticoid target genes in bone marrow. Instead, knockout males had increased progesterone in plasma and bone marrow. Together, our findings show that knockout of 11ß-HSD1 prevents CR-induced BMAT expansion in a sex-specific manner and highlights progesterone as a potential new regulator of bone marrow adiposity.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who lack traditional cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, such as young females, are observed to experience adverse CVD outcomes. Whether women with IBD have increased CVD risk after the menopause transition is unclear. METHODS: We conducted a survival analysis of Women's Health Initiative (WHI) participants and excluded those with missing IBD diagnosis, model covariate data, follow-up data, or a baseline history of the following CVD outcomes: coronary heart disease (CHD), ischemic stroke, venous thromboembolism (VTE), peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Risk of outcomes between IBD and non-IBD women was performed using Cox proportional hazard models, stratified by WHI trial and follow-up. Models were adjusted for age, socio-demographics, comorbidities (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, etc.), family history, and lifestyle factors (e.g., smoking, alcohol, physical activity, body mass index, etc.). RESULTS: Of 134,022 WHI participants meeting inclusion criteria, 1367 (1.0%) reported IBD at baseline. Mean baseline age was 63.4 years. After adjusting for age and other confounders, no significant difference was observed between IBD and non-IBD women for the risk of CHD (HR 0.96, 95% CI 0.73-1.24), VTE (HR 1.11, 95% CI 0.81-1.52) or PAD (HR 0.64, 95% CI 0.28-1.42). After adjusting for age, risk of ischemic stroke was significantly higher (HR 1.41, 95% CI 1.06-1.88) in IBD than non-IBD women. With further adjustment, the excess risk of ischemic stroke among IBD women was attenuated and no longer statistically significant (HR 1.31, 95% CI 0.98-1.76). CONCLUSIONS: Among postmenopausal women with IBD, risk of ischemic stroke may be higher than in non-IBD women.

In the face of global species loss, it is paramount to understand the effects of human activity on vulnerable species, particularly in highly diverse, complex systems. The Greater Madidi Landscape in the Bolivian Amazon includes several biodiverse protected areas that were created with the goal of sustaining healthy and diverse ecosystems while not impeding the livelihoods of local indigenous peoples. In this study, we sought to use camera trap data and single-species occupancy analysis to assess the impacts of different forms of human activity on four species of small felids: ocelots (Leopardus pardalis), margays (Leopardus wiedii), jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi), and oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus). We modeled both human variables (proximity to indigenous communities, roads, and tourist camps) and non-human variables (terrain ruggedness, proximity to rivers, canopy height, prey availability, and large cat abundance). Margay occupancy was unaffected by any of these human variables and ocelots showed only weak evidence of being affected by tourism. Ocelots were particularly pervasive throughout the study area and were consistently estimated to have high occupancy probability. We did not obtain sufficient data on jaguarundi or oncilla to reliably model these effects. Our results indicate that small cats successfully coexist both with each other and with the surrounding human activity in this unique landscape, which serves as a model for global protected area management.

BACKGROUND: The association of total energy intake (EI) with all-cause mortality is uncertain as are the dependencies of this association on age and weight change history. OBJECTIVES: To identify an EI biomarker suitable for use in epidemiologic association studies and to study EI associations with total mortality in a Women's Health Initiative (WHI) cohort of postmenopausal United States females (1993-present). METHODS: EI biomarkers were developed based on doubly labeled water (DLW) total energy expenditure (TEE) and weight variation during the 2-wk DLW protocol period using the energy balance method in an embedded feeding study (n = 153). This along with 2 earlier WHI nutrition biomarker studies having TEE assessments (n = 1131 total), with 14.6 y (median) follow-up, constituted a prospective cohort for the study of EI and all-cause mortality. RESULTS: An empirical biomarker for log(EI) was developed that had a correlation of 0.73 with log(feeding study-consumed EI). The overall association between EI and mortality was nonsignificant. The association, however, depended on age (P = 0.009), with lower EI associated with lower mortality at younger ages, and also on preceding weight change history (P = 0.03). Among participants with stable or increasing weight, mortality hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals [CIs]) for a 12% lower EI were 0.66 (95% CI: 0.51, 0.87) at age 60, 0.84 (95% CI: 0.72, 0.98) at age 70, and 1.06 (95% CI: 0.87, 1.29) at age 80. Corresponding values for participants having preceding weight loss were 0.83 (95% CI: 0.61, 1.12) at age 60, 1.05 (95% CI: 0.87, 1.26) at age 70, and 1.33 (95% CI: 1.08, 1.63) at age 80. A previously considered EI biomarker, using a theoretical model for variation in body fat and fat-free mass components over time, gave similar results following rescaling. CONCLUSIONS: Lower EI is associated with lower all-cause mortality among younger postmenopausal females with stable or increasing weight and with higher mortality among older females with weight loss. In recent decades, human food consumption has led to an increased demand for animal-based foods, particularly chicken meat production. The state of Georgia, USA is one of the top broiler chicken producers in the United States, where animals are raised in Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). Without proper management, CAFOs could negatively impact the environment and become a public health risk as a source of water and air pollution and/or by spreading antimicrobial resistance genes. In this study, we used metagenome sequencing to investigate the impact of the application of the CAFO's litter on adjacent soils and downstream creek waters in terms of microbial diversity and antimicrobial resistance profile changes. Our data indicate that while a few microbial groups increased in abundance within a short period of time after litter application, these populations subsequently decreased to levels similar to those found prior to the litter application or to below the detection limit of our metagenome sequencing effort. Microbial taxonomic composition analyses, relative abundance of Metagenome-Assembled Genomes (MAGs) and detection of Antimicrobial Resistance Genes (ARGs) allow us to conclude that this practice of litter application had a negligible effect on the microbiome or resistome profile of these soils and nearby waterways, likely due to its dilution in the field and/or outcompetition by indigenous microbes, revealing a minimal impact of these poultry facilities on the natural microbial communities.

BACKGROUND: Frequent premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and nonsustained ventricular tachycardia (NSVT) have been associated with cardiovascular disease and mortality. Their prevalence, especially in ambulatory populations, is understudied and limited by few female participants and the use of short-duration (24- to 48-hour) monitoring. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to report the prevalence of frequent PVCs and NSVT in a community-based population of women likely to undergo electrocardiogram (ECG) screening by sequential patch monitoring. METHODS: Participants from the Women's Health Initiative Strong and Healthy (WHISH) trial with no history of atrial fibrillation (AF) but 5-year predicted risk of incident AF ≥5% by CHARGE-AF score were randomly selected to undergo screening with 7-day ECG patch monitors at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. Recordings were reviewed for PVCs and NSVT (>5 beats); data were analyzed with multivariate regression models. RESULTS: There were 1067 participants who underwent ECG screening at baseline, 866 at 6 months, and 777 at 12 months. Frequent PVCs were found on at least 1 patch from 4.3% of participants, and 1 or more episodes of NSVT were found in 12 (1.1%) women. PVC frequency directly correlated with CHARGE-AF score and NSVT on any patch. Detection of frequent PVCs increased with sequential monitoring. CONCLUSION: In postmenopausal women at high risk for AF, frequent PVCs were relatively common (4.3%) and correlated with higher CHARGE-AF score. As strategies for AF screening continue to evolve, particularly in those individuals at high risk of AF, the prevalence of incidental ventricular arrhythmias is an important benchmark to guide clinical decision-making.

The high contact resistance of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based devices is receiving considerable attention due to its limitation on electronic performance. The mechanism of Fermi level (EF) pinning, which causes the high contact resistance, is not thoroughly understood to date. In this study, the metal (Ni and Ag)/Mo-TMD surfaces and interfaces are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, and density functional theory systematically. Ni and Ag form covalent and van der Waals (vdW) interfaces on Mo-TMDs, respectively. Imperfections are detected on Mo-TMDs, which lead to electronic and spatial variations. Gap states appear after the adsorption of single and two metal atoms on Mo-TMDs. The combination of the interface reaction type (covalent or vdW), the imperfection variability of the TMD materials, and the gap states induced by contact metals with different weights are concluded to be the origins of EF pinning.

Bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF) are increasingly used to replace bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine-disrupting chemical with putative obesogenic properties; whether and how BPS and BPF affect adiposity in humans remains to be determined. Therefore, we examined the association of BPA, BPS, and BPF with body composition among US adults. We included 1787 participants aged 20-59 years old in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2016 who had information on urinary BPA, BPS, and BPF concentrations, and body composition measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. After full adjustment for potential confounders in linear regression models, BPA was significantly associated with the % body fat of the whole body, arm, and leg, with the ß (95% CI) for the highest quartile vs. the lowest quartile of 1.34 (95%CI [0.11, 2.58], P = 0.03), 1.60 (95%CI [0.20, 3.00], P = 0.03), and 1.63 (95%CI [0.24, 3.02], P = 0.02), respectively. No association between BPA and lean mass was found. For BPS, significant associations were found for % body fat of the whole body (ß [95% CI] = 1.42 [0.49, 2.36], P = 0.004), trunk (ß[95% CI] = 1.92 [0.86, 2.97], P = 0.001), and arm (ß [95% CI] = 1.60 [0.49, 2.70], P = 0.01), as well as lean mass of the whole body (ß [95% CI] = 2610.6 [1324.3, 3896.8], P < 0.001), trunk (ß [95% CI] = 1467.0 [745.3, 2188.7], P < 0.001), arm (ß [95% CI] = 113.4 [10.3, 216.5], P = 0.03), and leg (ß [95% CI] = 431.5 [219.6, 643.4], P < 0.001), comparing the third quartile vs. the lowest quartile. No significant association was observed between BPF and % body fat and lean mass. Results suggest that higher BPA levels were significantly associated with greater % body fat of the whole body and limbs, and there was suggestive evidence that BPS levels were associated with both % body fat and lean mass of the whole body and body parts in a nonmonotonic relationship.

BACKGROUND: Many approaches to quantifying air pollution exposures have been developed. However, the impact of choice of approach on air pollution estimates and health-effects associations remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: Our objective is to compare particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5µm (PM2.5) concentrations and resulting health effects associations using multiple estimation approaches previously used in epidemiologic analyses. METHODS: We assigned annual PM2.5 exposure estimates from 1999 to 2004 derived from 11 different approaches to Women's Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS) participant addresses within the contiguous US. Approaches included geostatistical interpolation approaches, land-use regression or spatiotemporal models, satellite-derived approaches, air dispersion and chemical transport models, and hybrid models. We used descriptive statistics and plots to assess relative and absolute agreement among exposure estimates and examined the impact of approach on associations between PM2.5 and death due to natural causes, cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, and incident CVD events, adjusting for individual-level covariates and climate-based region. RESULTS: With a few exceptions, relative agreement of approach-specific PM2.5 exposure estimates was high for PM2.5 concentrations across the contiguous US. Agreement among approach-specific exposure estimates was stronger near PM2.5 monitors, in certain regions of the country, and in 2004 vs. 1999. Collectively, our results suggest but do not quantify lower agreement at local spatial scales for PM2.5. There was no evidence of large differences in health effects associations with PM2.5 among estimation approaches in analyses adjusted for climate region. CONCLUSIONS: Different estimation approaches produced similar spatial patterns of PM2.5 concentrations across the contiguous US and in areas with dense monitoring data, and PM2.5-health effects associations were similar among estimation approaches. PM2.5 estimates and PM2.5-health effects associations may differ more in samples drawn from smaller areas or areas without substantial monitoring data, or in analyses with finer adjustment for participant location. Our results can inform decisions about PM2.5 estimation approach in epidemiologic studies, as investigators balance concerns about bias, efficiency, and resource allocation. Accurate identification of species is key to understanding their ecological roles and evolutionary history. It is also essential in cataloging biodiversity for comparisons among habitat types, responses to climate change, effective management practices, and more. The paucity of taxonomic expertise is increasing and with it the ability to competently identify species, this is particularly true for small taxa including rotifers. In an effort to improve this situation, we collated information on morphological characters from the literature on all valid species of sessile Gnesiotrocha (phylum Rotifera) currently assigned to two orders and four families. We review Order Collothecaceae, which comprises families Atrochidae (3 spp.) and Collothecidae (50 spp.) and Order Flosculariaceae, which includes families Conochilidae (7 spp.) and Flosculariidae (71 species). Based on that information, we provide dichotomous keys to the Families, monospecific species in Flosculariidae, and species of Atrochidae, Conochilidae, and Limnias. These keys will aid researchers to identify species in these families and lead to a better understanding of freshwater biodiversity and eco-evolutionary processes.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD) are leading causes of death among older adults in the United States. Efforts to understand risk factors for prevention are needed. METHODS: Participants (n = 146,166) enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative without AD at baseline were included. Diabetes status was ascertained from self-reported questionnaires and deaths attributed to AD/ADRD from hospital, autopsy, and death records. Competing risk regression models were used to estimate the cause-specific hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the prospective association of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with AD/ADRD and non-AD/ADRD mortality. RESULTS: There were 29,393 treated T2DM cases and 8628 AD/ADRD deaths during 21.6 (14.0-23.5) median (IQR) years of follow-up. Fully adjusted HRs (95% CIs) of the association with T2DM were 2.94 (2.76-3.12) for AD/ADRD and 2.65 (2.60-2.71) for the competing risk of non-AD/ADRD mortality. DISCUSSION: T2DM is associated with AD/ADRD and non-AD/ADRD mortality. HIGHLIGHTS: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is more strongly associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD)/AD and related dementias (ADRD) mortality compared to the competing risk of non-AD/ADRD mortality among postmenopausal women. This relationship was consistent for AD and ADRD, respectively. This association is strongest among participants without obesity or hypertension and with younger age at baseline, higher diet quality, higher physical activity, higher alcohol consumption, and older age at the time of diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Elevated psychosocial stress has been linked with accelerated biological aging, including composite DNA methylation (DNAm) markers that predict aging-related outcomes ("epigenetic age"). However, no study has examined whether stressful life events (SLEs) are associated with epigenetic age acceleration in postmenopausal women, an aging population characterized by increased stress burden and disease risk. METHODS: We leveraged the Women's Health Initiative, a large muti-ancestry cohort of postmenopausal women with available psychosocial stress measures over the past year and epigenomic data. SLEs and social support were ascertained via self-report questionnaires. Whole blood DNAm array (450 K) data were used to calculate five DNAm-based predictors of chronological age, health span and life span, and telomere length (HorvathAge, HannumAge, PhenoAge, GrimAge, DNAmTL). RESULTS: After controlling for potential confounders, higher SLE burden was significantly associated with accelerated epigenetic aging, as measured by GrimAge (ß: 0.34, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.59) and DNAmTL (ß: -0.016, 95% CI: -0.028, -0.004). Exploratory analyses showed that SLEs-GrimAge associations were stronger in Black women as compared to other races/ethnicities and in those with lower social support levels. In women with lower social support, SLEs-DNAmTL associations showed opposite association in Hispanic women as compared to other race/ethnicity groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that elevated stress burden is associated with accelerated epigenetic aging in postmenopausal women. Lower social support and/or self-reported race/ethnicity may modify the association of stress with epigenetic age acceleration. These findings advance understanding of how stress may contribute to aging-related outcomes and have important implications for disease prevention and treatment in aging women.
