RESUMEN

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is a key factor in stress adaptation and avoidance of a social stress behavioral response. Recent studies have shown that brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in stressed mice is brain region-specific, particularly involving the corticolimbic system, including the ventral tegmental area, nucleus accumbens, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. Determining how brain-derived neurotrophic factor participates in stress processing in different brain regions will deepen our understanding of social stress psychopathology. In this review, we discuss the expression and regulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in stress-sensitive brain regions closely related to the pathophysiology of depression. We focused on associated molecular pathways and neural circuits, with special attention to the brain-derived neurotrophic factor-tropomyosin receptor kinase B signaling pathway and the ventral tegmental area-nucleus accumbens dopamine circuit. We determined that stress-induced alterations in brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels are likely related to the nature, severity, and duration of stress, especially in the above-mentioned brain regions of the corticolimbic system. Therefore, BDNF might be a biological indicator regulating stress-related processes in various brain regions.

To investigate the associations of fundamental movement skill (FMS) proficiency with family factors, including socioeconomic status (SES) and caregiver characteristics, by sex in young children in China. Participants included 1,207 Chinese children aged 3-6 years in this cross-sectional study. Children's FMS, consisting of locomotor skills and object control (OC) skills, were assessed. Information on family SES and caregiver characteristics was reported by the parents. Sex differences in outcomes and the associations of FMS with family factors by sex were examined using SPSS 26.0. Boys scored significantly higher than girls in terms of overall FMS and OC skills (both p < 0.01). There were significant and negative associations between children's FMS and parental education level and parental body mass index (BMI), which varied by sex. Boys who were regularly cared for by parents had higher FMS and OC skill scores than did those who were primarily looked after by grandparents (both p < 0.01). This complex interplay between sex and family factors (i.e. parental education level, parental BMI, and the identity of primary caregiver) on FMS proficiency in young children underscores the urgent need for developing sex-tailored, family-involved, and socio-culturally adapted interventions to enhance FMS proficiency at the preschool stage.

Bi3+ doped Ti/Sb-SnO2/PbO2 electrode materials were fabricated by electrodeposition to improve their electrochemical performance in zinc electrowinning. The surface morphology, chemical composition, and hydrophilicity of the as-prepared electrodes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angle. An electrochemical measurement and an accelerated lifetime experiment were also conducted to investigate the electrocatalytic performance and stability of the electrodes. The results show that the Bi3+ modification electrode has an important effect on the coating morphology, the crystal structure, the surface hydrophilicity, the electrocatalytic activity, and the stability. The electrode prepared from the solution containing 2 mmol·L-1 Bi(NO3)3 (marked as the Ti/Sb-SnO2/2Bi-PbO2 electrode) exhibits the best hydrophilicity performance (θ = 21.6°) and the longest service life (1196 h). During the electrochemical characterization analysis, the Ti/Sb-SnO2/2Bi-PbO2 electrode showed the highest oxygen evolution activity, which can be attributed to it having the highest electroactive surface (qT* = 21.20 C·cm-2) and the best charge-transfer efficiency. The DFT calculation demonstrated that the doping of Bi3+ leads to a decrease in the OER reaction barrier and an increase in the DOS of the electrode, which further enhances the catalytic activity and the conductivity of the electrode. Moreover, the simulated zinc electrowinning experiment demonstrated that the Ti/Sb-SnO2/2Bi-PbO2 electrode consumes less energy than other electrodes. Therefore, it is expected that the Bi3+ modified electrode will become a very promising electrode material for zinc electrowinning in the future.

Two new sulfur glycosides, bursapastoris A-B (3-4), were extracted and isolated from shepherd's purse seed, along with two new natural products, 11-(methylsulfinyl)undecanoic acid (2) and 10-(methylsulfinyl)decanoic acid (1). Their structures were determined though infrared spectroscopy, one-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C), and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Additionally, the structures of 3-4 were further identified by two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (HMBC, HSQC, 1H-1H COSY, and NOESY). Compounds 1-4 showed relatively favorable docking to NF-κB. Unfortunately, we only discovered that compound 1-4 had weak anti-radiation activity at present. Therefore, further research regarding the biological activity of these organosulfur compounds is required at a later stage.

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have been increasingly recognized as a promising candidate for the next-generation energy-storage systems. This is primarily because LSBs demonstrate an unparalleled theoretical capacity and energy density far exceeding conventional lithium-ion batteries. However, the sluggish redox kinetics and formidable dissolution of polysulfides lead to poor sulfur utilization, serious polarization issues, and cyclic instability. Herein, sulfiphilic few-layer MoSSe nanoflake decorated on graphene (MoSSe@graphene), a two-dimensional and catalytically active hetero-structure composite, was prepared through a facile microwave method, which was used as a conceptually new sulfur host and served as an interfacial kinetic accelerator for LSBs. Specifically, this sulfiphilic MoSSe nanoflake not only strongly interacts with soluble polysulfides but also dynamically promotes polysulfide redox reactions. In addition, the 2D graphene nanosheets can provide an extra physical barrier to mitigate the diffusion of lithium polysulfides and enable much more uniform sulfur distribution, thus dramatically inhibiting polysulfides shuttling meanwhile accelerating sulfur conversion reactions. As a result, the cells with MoSSe@graphene nanohybrid achieved a superior rate performance (1091 mAh/g at 1C) and an ultralow decaying rate of 0.040 % per cycle after 1000 cycles at 1C.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of inappropriate gestational weight gain (GWG) on pregnancy outcomes in twin pregnant women with in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 2992 twin pregnant women and categorized the participants as follows: (i) they were classified into spontaneous conception (SC) or IVF groups based on whether they received IVF treatment, and (ii) they were categorized into inadequate, optimal, or excessive GWG groups according to the International Organization for Migration Twin Pregnancy Guidelines. Initially, the study investigated the separate effects of IVF treatment and different levels of GWG on the outcomes of twin pregnancies. Subsequently, after adjusting for confounding factors, multifactorial logistic regression analysis was performed to further investigate the impact of IVF treatment and high GWG on twin pregnancy outcomes. Based on this, the analysis was stratified by whether IVF was used to explore the effects of different GWG levels on each subgroup (those who underwent IVF and those who conceived spontaneously). Finally, potential multiplicative interactions between IVF and different GWG categories were examined to identify their combined effect on pregnancy outcomes. RESULTS: The results showed that women with twin gestations conceived via IVF exhibited significantly higher maternal age, pre-pregnancy body mass index, and a greater incidence of GWG beyond recommended guidelines compared to the SC group. Furthermore, both IVF treatment and inappropriate GWG increased the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, respectively. Following adjustments for confounding variables through multifactorial logistic regression, it was demonstrated that both IVF treatment and high GWG significantly elevated the risk of adverse outcomes in twin pregnancies, such as admission to the neonatal intensive care unit. It is noteworthy that inappropriate GWG, combined with IVF treatment, will stepwise increase the incidence of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, respiratory failure, respiratory distress, pre-eclampsia, maternal intensive care unit admission, and postpartum hemorrhage risk. However, these outcomes were less affected by inappropriate GWG in the SC group. Lastly, this study did not unveil a significant interaction between the IVF procedure and disparate levels of GWG in relation to the adverse outcomes. CONCLUSION: A high incidence of inappropriate GWG in twin pregnancies with IVF treatment and inappropriate GWG conferred more adverse twin pregnancy outcomes in the IVF group relative to the SC group. This study indicates that proper management of GWG may be a breakthrough in reducing adverse outcomes in twin pregnancies associated with IVF. Therefore, implementing proactive interventions such as supervised exercise programs, prescribed physical or dietary plans, enhanced weight management, or personalized counseling, holds promise for lowering the risks associated with inappropriate GWG in twin pregnancies resulting from IVF.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) can be categorised into aquaporin-4 antibody (AQP4-IgG) NMOSD or seronegative NMOSD. While our knowledge of AQP4-IgG NMOSD has evolved significantly in the past decade, seronegative NMOSD remains less understood. This study aimed to evaluate the predictors of relapses and treatment responses in AQP4-IgG NMOSD and seronegative NMOSD. METHODS: This was a multicentre, international, retrospective cohort study using the MSBase registry. Recurrent relapse risk was assessed using an Andersen-Gill model and risk of first relapse was evaluated using a Cox proportional hazards model. Covariates that putatively influence relapse risk included demographic factors, clinical characteristics and immunosuppressive therapies; the latter was assessed as a time-varying covariate. RESULTS: A total of 398 patients (246 AQP4-IgG NMOSD and 152 seronegative NMOSD) were included. The AQP4-IgG NMOSD and seronegative NMOSD patients did not significantly differ by age at disease onset, ethnicity or annualised relapse rate. Both low-efficacy and high-efficacy immunosuppressive therapies were associated with significant reductions in recurrent relapse risk, with notably greater protection conferred by high-efficacy therapies in both AQP4-IgG NMOSD (HR 0.27, 95% CI 0.15 to 0.49, p<0.001) and seronegative NMOSD (HR 0.21, 95% CI 0.08 to 0.51, p<0.001). Longer disease duration (HR 0.97, 95% CI 0.95 to 0.99, p<0.001) and male sex (HR 0.52, 95% CI 0.34 to 0.84, p=0.007) were additional protective variables in reducing the recurrent relapse risk for the AQP4-IgG NMOSD group. CONCLUSION: Although further studies are needed to improve our understanding of seronegative NMOSD, our findings underscore the importance of aggressive treatment with high-efficacy immunotherapies in both NMOSD subtypes, regardless of serostatus.

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds come from a wide range of sources and are highly toxic, posing a serious threat to biological health and the environment. Herein, a high-efficiency and energy-saving photothermal synergistic catalytic oxidation method was developed for the removal of 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE). Compared to traditional thermocatalysis, the 1,2-DCE conversion over Ru-U6S in photothermal synergistic catalysis at 340 °C increased by approximately 44% not only reducing energy consumption but also avoiding the instability of MOF structure caused by high reaction temperature. The excellent photothermal catalytic oxidation activity was derived from the synergistic effect of photo- and thermocatalysis. Ru-U6S demonstrated excellent 1,2-DCE adsorption capacity and stronger light utilization and could produce more reactive oxygen species (•OH and •O2-) after light illumination, which participated in the oxidation reaction, promoting the release of the active site of the catalyst. The results of H2O-TPD and NH3-DRIFTS exhibited that the use of S-containing ligands in the synthesis process increased the hydroxyl groups and Brønsted acid sites, significantly improved the selectivity of CO2 and HCl in the oxidation process, and reduced the release of chlorine-containing byproducts. This work provides a high-efficiency and energy-saving strategy for removing chlorinated volatile organic compounds and increasing the selectivity of ideal products directly with MOFs directly.

BACKGROUND: Research is increasingly highlighting the intricate relationship between mental and physical health. However, longitudinal studies investigating the interplay between chronic diseases (CDs), depression and anxiety are still relatively scarce. This study aimed to delve into the longitudinal connections among these variables. METHODS: This study conducted a 4-year prospective survey involving 486 participants from rural communities in Shandong Province, China. The relationships among these variables were analyzed using multiple linear regression, cross-lagged path analysis, and multiple-group analysis. RESULTS: Our analysis revealed that the number of CDs reported at wave 1 significantly predicted anxiety levels (ß = 0.126, p < .01) at wave 2, while depression symptoms also predicted anxiety (ß = 0.220, p < .01) at wave 2. Furthermore, anxiety levels at wave 1 significantly predicted both the number of CDs (ß = 0.219, p < .01) and depression symptoms (ß = 0.160, p < .05) at wave 2. However, the study did not find support for a relationship between CDs and depression. CONCLUSION: The study uncovered a bidirectional association between CDs and anxiety, depression and anxiety, but found no direct longitudinal relationship between CDs and depression. Research has indicated that CDs indirectly affect depression through anxiety.

Exploring nutrient limitation in forest soil holds significant implications for forest tending and management. However, current research on nutrient limitation status of microorganisms in Robinia pseudoacacia plantations within the Loess Plateau remains insufficient. To investigate soil microbial nutrient limitation of R. pseu-doacacia plantations on the Loess Plateau, we selected R. pseudoacacia plantations with different afforestation time series (15, 25, 35, and 45 years) and a pile of barren slope cropland (control) in Yongshou County, Shaanxi Province as the research objects. We analyzed the contents of soil organic matter, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus, and the activities of ß-1,4-glucosidase (BG), cellobiose hydrolase (CBH), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), ß-1,4-N-acetylglucoside (NAG) and phosphatase (AP). We analyzed the soil nutrient limitation by stoichiometry and enzyme metrology. The results showed a shift in soil pH from alkaline to acidic during vegetation restoration process, and that total phosphorus exhibited a gradual decrease over the course of 0 to 25 years. Soil orga-nic matter, total nitrogen and enzyme activities exhibited an increasing trend during the same time frame. However, between 25 and 45 years of age, soil total phosphorus, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, AP and LAP gradually declined while NAG, BG, and CBH initially increased and then decreased. Notably, the values of (BG+CBH)/(LAP+NAG), (BG+CBH)/AP and (LAP+NAG)/AP in R. pseudoacacia plantations were higher than the global average throughout the process of vegetation restoration. In the study area, the vector length was less than 1 and gradually increased, indicating that a progressive increase in microbial carbon limitation during the process of vegetation restoration. The vector angle exceeded 45° and exhibited an overall decreasing trend, suggesting that soil microorganisms were constrained by phosphorus (P) with a gradual deceleration of P limitation, without any nitrogen (N) limitation. The restoration of R. pseudoacacia plantation resulted in significant change in soil physical and chemical properties, while the time series of afforestation also influenced nutrient limitation of soil microorganisms.

The remediation of organic wastewater through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on metal-free biochar/persulfate systems has been extensively researched. In this work, boron-doped alkali lignin biochar (BKC1:3) was utilized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of sulfamethazine (SMZ). The porous structure and substantial specific surface area of BKC1:3 facilitated the adsorption and thus degradation of SMZ. The XPS characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that -BCO2 was the main active site of BKC1:3, which dominated the occurrence of nonradical pathways. Neither quenching experiments nor EPR characterization revealed the generation of free radical signals. Compared with KC, BKC1:3 possessed more electron-rich regions. The narrow energy gap (ΔEgap = 1.87 eV) of BKC (-BCO2) promoted the electron transfer to the substable complex (BKC@PMS*) on SMZ, driving the electron transfer mechanism. In addition, the adsorption energy of BKC(-BCO2)@PMS was lower (-0.75 eV → -5.12 eV), implying a more spontaneous adsorption process. The O-O (PMS) bond length in BKC(-BCO2)@PMS increased significantly (1.412 Š→ 1.481 Å), which led to the easier decomposition of PMS during adsorption and facilitated the generation of 1O2. More importantly, a combination of Gaussian and LC-MS techniques was hypothesized regarding the attack sites and degradation intermediates of the active species in this system. The synergistic T.E.S.T software and toxicity tests predicted low or even no toxicity of the intermediates. Overall, this study proposed a strategy for the preparation of metal-free biochar, aiming to inspire ideas for the treatment of organic-polluted wastewater through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs).
