This work investigated the cryoprotective effect of trehalose (TH) and sodium pyrophosphate (SPP) alone and in combination on myofibrillar protein (MP) oxidation and structural changes in silver carp surimi during 90 days of frozen storage (-20 °C). TH combined with SPP was significantly more effective than single TH or SPP in preventing MP oxidation (P < 0.05), showing a higher SH content (6.05 nmol/mg protein), and a lower carbonyl (4.24 nmol/mg protein) and dityrosine content (1280 A.U.). SDS-PAGE results indicated that TH combined with SPP did not differ significantly from TH and SPP in inhibiting protein degradation but was more effective in inhibiting protein crosslinking. Moreover, all cryoprotectants could stabilise the secondary and tertiary structures and inhibit unfolded and aggregation of MP, with the combination of TH and SPP being the best. It's worth noting that TH combined with SPP had a synergistic effect on inhibiting the decrease in α-helix content and gel-forming ability, and the increase in surface hydrophobicity. Overall, TH combined with SPP could significantly inhibited MP oxidation and structural changes in surimi during frozen storage and improve the gel-forming ability, which was significantly better than single TH or SPP.

Ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted considerable interest in the last two decades owing to their unique fluorescent properties. Herein, N-octylpyridine hydrogen sulphate ([OP]HSO4) was synthesised and characterised using 1H NMR and infrared spectroscopies. In addition, the fluorescence spectra of [OP]HSO4 in water, methanol, ethanol and acetonitrile were studied. In a single solvent, as the concentration of the solvent (methanol, ethanol or acetonitrile) increases, the fluorescence intensity of the IL first increases and then decreases. A similar trend was observed in their mixed solvents with water. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity of [OP]HSO4 decreases with increasing temperature. A fluorescence intensity reduction of only 4.46% for [OP]HSO4 after continuous scanning for 40 cycles under the maximum excitation state was analysed. The lack of photobleaching observed in [OP]HSO4 indicates its good photobleaching resistance.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The contribution of individual and combined inflammatory markers for the prognosis of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remains elusive. This study investigated the effect of systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), and neutrophil to high-density lipoprotein ratio (NHR), which is mediated by fasting blood glucose (FBG), on 90-day prognosis of patients with AIS. METHODS: In this pre-specified substudy of an observational cohort study, 2828 patients with AIS were enrolled from the Nanjing Stroke Registry between January 2017 to July 2021. Peripheral venous blood was collected from patients fasting for at least 8 hours within 24 hours of admission to gather information on the following parameters: neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, monocyte count, HDL level, and fasting blood glucose level. Then, the SIRI and NHR values were calculated. Following this, the correlation among SIRI, NHR, and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores 90d after onset was examined via univariate and multivariate logistic analyses. Lastly, mediation analysis was performed to examine the relationship between systematic inflammatory response and study outcomes mediated by FBG. RESULTS: SIRI and NHR were both negatively correlated with clinical outcomes (p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that SIRI and NHR were independently associated with poor outcomes after adjusting for potential confounders. Subgroup analyses further validated these correlations. Meanwhile, mediation analysis corroborated that FBG partially mediated the associations between SIRI and a poor prognosis at 90d (indirect effect estimate = 0.0038, bootstrap 95% CI 0.001 to 0.008; direct effect estimate = 0.1719, bootstrap 95% CI 0.1258 to 0.2179). Besides, FBG also played a mediating role between NHR and poor outcomes (indirect effect estimate = 0.0066, bootstrap 95% CI 0.002 to 0.120; direct effect estimate = 0.1308, bootstrap 95% CI 0.0934 to 0.1681). CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that SIRI and NHR are positively associated with poor clinical and mortality outcomes at 90d in AIS patients, which was partially mediated by FBG.

INTRODUCTION: Food delivery drivers represent a rapidly growing occupational group in China in recent years. Their unique work patterns such as a complex work environment and high time-pressure may subject them to more severe tobacco use issues compared to other professions. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of tobacco use within this group and examine the underlying reasons behind it. METHODS: A cross-sectional, multistage sampling design was conducted to select 1879 food delivery riders from Guangzhou and Shenzhen. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data from August to December 2022. Chi-squared analysis and binary logistic regression analysis, adjusted for factors including gender, education level, type of employment, alcohol use, job-related uncertainty stress, and emotional exhaustion, were used to explore the key factors associated with smoking among this occupational group. RESULTS: Altogether, 65.5% of individuals in this sample were smokers, with 69.5% among males and 26.2% among females. Factors found to be significantly associated with smoking behavior were male sex (AOR=5.48; 95% CI: 3.74-8.02), education level of junior high school or lower (AOR=1.60; 95% CI: 1.21-2.11), education level of senior high school (AOR=1.52; 95% CI: 1.18-1.95), full-time job (AOR=1.39; 95% CI: 1.18-1.80), alcohol use (AOR=3.91; 95% CI: 3.14-4.87), moderate level of job-related uncertainty stress (AOR=0.58; 95% CI: 0.42-0.81), high level of emotional exhaustion (AOR=1.57; 95% CI: 1.17-2.10) and moderate level of emotional exhaustion (AOR=1.52; 95% CI: 1.00-2.30). CONCLUSIONS: Demographic factors like gender, education level, job type, and substance use should be considered in designing smoking cessation campaigns for this group. Improving work conditions, reducing emotional exhaustion, and managing stress may also reduce smoking and enhance the well-being of these riders.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Jiegeng decoction (JGD), consisting of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Platycodonis Radix at the ratio of 2:1, is a classical Chinese medicine prescription firstly recorded in "Treatise on Febrile Diseases". JGD has been extensively utilized to treat sore throat and lung diseases for thousands of years in China. However, the pharmacological effect and mechanism of JGD on acute pharyngitis (AP) remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: Our research aimed to reveal the pharmacological effect of JGD on AP and its potential mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The chemical components of JGD were analyzed based on the UPLC-MS analysis. The anti-inflammatory effect of JGD was evaluated by NO production using the Griess assay in RAW 264.7 cells. The mRNA expression of iNOS, IL-1ß, IL-10, TNF-α, IL-6 and MCP-1 was determined by qRT-PCR in vitro. A 15% ammonia-induced AP model was established. The histopathology, the inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and MCP-1 in serum and the apoptosis-related genes caspease-8 and caspease-3 were determined by H&E staining, ELISA and qRT-PCR, respectively. The expression levels of p-p65, p65, p-JNK, JNK, p-p38, p38, p-ERK1/2, ERK1/2, and COX2 were measured through western blotting. RESULTS: Nine compounds, including liquiritin, liquiritin apiosde, liquiritigenin, platycodin D, platycoside A, licorice saponin J2, licorice saponin G2, glycyrrhizic acid, and licochalcone A, were identified. JGD significantly inhibited NO production and regulated the mRNA expression levels of cytokines in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. The results of in vivo experiments confirmed that JGD ameliorated AP through improving the pathological state of pharyngeal tissue, decreasing the serum levels of IL-6 and MCP-1 and preventing the tissue mRNA expression of caspease-8 and caspease-3. Furthermore, JGD also inhibited the NF-κB and MAPK pathways in the AP model. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested that JGD could alleviate AP through its anti-inflammation via NF-κB and MAPK pathways, which supported the traditional application of JGD for the treatment of throat diseases.

α-Dicarbonyl compounds (α-DCs) are commonly present in various foods. We conducted the investigation into concentration changes of α-DCs including 3-deoxyglucosone (3-DG), glyoxal (GO), and methylglyoxal (MGO) in fresh fruits and decapped commercial juices during storage at room temperature and 4 °C, as well as in homemade juices during storage at 4 °C. The studies indicate the presence of α-DCs in all samples. The initial contents of 3-DG in the commercial juices (6.74 to 65.61 µg/mL) are higher than those in the homemade ones (1.97 to 4.65 µg/mL) as well as fruits (1.58 to 3.33 µg/g). The initial concentrations of GO and MGO are normally less than 1 µg/mL in all samples. During storage, the α-DC levels in the fruits exhibit an initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease, whereas, in all juices, they tend to accumulate continuously over time. As expected, 4 °C storage reduces the increase rates of the α-DC concentrations in most samples. From the viewpoint of the α-DC contents, fruits and homemade juices should always be the first choice for daily intake of nutrients and commercial juices ought to be mostly avoided.

Land cover classification (LCC) is of paramount importance for assessing environmental changes in remote sensing images (RSIs) as it involves assigning categorical labels to ground objects. The growing availability of multi-source RSIs presents an opportunity for intelligent LCC through semantic segmentation, offering a comprehensive understanding of ground objects. Nonetheless, the heterogeneous appearances of terrains and objects contribute to significant intra-class variance and inter-class similarity at various scales, adding complexity to this task. In response, we introduce SLMFNet, an innovative encoder-decoder segmentation network that adeptly addresses this challenge. To mitigate the sparse and imbalanced distribution of RSIs, we incorporate selective attention modules (SAMs) aimed at enhancing the distinguishability of learned representations by integrating contextual affinities within spatial and channel domains through a compact number of matrix operations. Precisely, the selective position attention module (SPAM) employs spatial pyramid pooling (SPP) to resample feature anchors and compute contextual affinities. In tandem, the selective channel attention module (SCAM) concentrates on capturing channel-wise affinity. Initially, feature maps are aggregated into fewer channels, followed by the generation of pairwise channel attention maps between the aggregated channels and all channels. To harness fine-grained details across multiple scales, we introduce a multi-level feature fusion decoder with data-dependent upsampling (MLFD) to meticulously recover and merge feature maps at diverse scales using a trainable projection matrix. Empirical results on the ISPRS Potsdam and DeepGlobe datasets underscore the superior performance of SLMFNet compared to various state-of-the-art methods. Ablation studies affirm the efficacy and precision of SAMs in the proposed model.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Yuanhu Zhitong Prescription (YZP) is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula for neuropathic pain (NP) therapy with a satisfying clinical efficacy. However, the underlying pharmacological mechanism and its compatibility principle remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to investigate the analgesic and compatibility mechanisms of YZP on neuropathic pain (NP) at the gene and biological process levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The chronic constriction injury (CCI) rats were intragastrically administrated with extracts of YZP, YH and BZ separately, and then mechanical hypersensitivity were measured to evaluate the analgesic effects between YH and BZ before and after compatibility. Then, RNA-seq and bioinformatics analyses were performed to elucidate the potential mechanisms underlying YZP's analgesia and compatibility. Finally, the expression levels and significant differences of key genes were analyzed. RESULTS: Behaviorally, both YZP and YH effectively alleviated mechanical allodynia in CCI rats, with YZP being superior to YH. In contrast, we did not observe an analgesic effect of BZ. Genetically, YZP, YH, and BZ reversed the expression levels of 52, 34, and 42 aberrant genes in the spinal cord of CCI rats, respectively. Mechanically, YZP was revealed to alleviate NP mainly by modulating the inflammatory response and neuropeptide signaling pathway, which are the dominant effective processes of YH. Interestingly, the effective targets of YZP were especially enriched in leukocyte activation and cytokine-mediated signaling pathways. Moreover, BZ was found to exert an adjunctive effect in enhancing the analgesic effect of YH by promoting skeletal muscle tissue regeneration and modulating calcium ion transport. CONCLUSIONS: YH, as the monarch drug, plays a dominant role in the analgesic effect of YZP that effectively relieves NP by inhibiting the spinal inflammation and neuropeptide signaling pathway. BZ, as the minister drug, not only synergistically enhances analgesic processes of YH but also helps to alleviate the accompanying symptoms of NP. Consequently, YZP exerted a more potent analgesic effect than YH and BZ alone. In conclusion, our findings offer new insights into understanding the pharmacological mechanism and compatibility principle of YZP, which may support its clinical application in NP therapy.

C-H carboxylation of furoic acid (FA) with CO2 is an atom-efficient strategy to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (2,5-FDCA) from lignocellulose. The existing carbonate-promoted CO2 carboxylation processes rely on the use of large amounts of expensive Cs2CO3 as a deprotonating reagent and molten salt. Substitution of Cs with other cheap and abundant alkali ions (such as K and Na) can reduce the use of Cs, but it faces the problem of a low yield of 2,5-FDCA. This study found that the addition of catalytic amounts of ZnCl2 as a Lewis acid can increase the yield of 2,5-FDCA in the CO2 carboxylation reaction of Na/K-FA in a molten salt reaction system. 1H NMR analysis and DFT calculations confirmed that ZnCl2 coordinates with the furan ring through electron transfer from the conjugated furan ring to Zn2+, thereby activating the H at the C5 position of Na/K-FA. This coordination lengthened the C5-H bond and lowered its heterolytic dissociation energy, making it more susceptible to being deprotonated by CO32- and subsequently carboxylated by CO2. The developed Lewis acid coordination strategy provides a new idea for the efficient construction of C-C bonds between CO2 and aromatics through carbonate-promoted C-H carboxylation.

Highly responsive interface of semiconductor nanophotoelectrochemical materials provides a broad development prospect for the identification of low-abundance cancer marker molecules. This work innovatively proposes an efficient blank WO3/SnIn4S8 heterojunction interface formed by self-assembly on the working electrode for interface regulation and photoregulation. Different from the traditional biomolecular layered interface, a hydrogel layer containing manganese dioxide with a wide light absorption range is formed at the interface after an accurate response to external immune recognition. The formation of the hydrogel layer hinders the effective contact between the heterojunction interface and the electrolyte solution, and manganese dioxide in the hydrogel layer forms a strong competition between the light source and the substrate photoelectric material. The process effectively improves the carrier recombination efficiency at the interface, reduces the interface reaction kinetics and photoelectric conversion efficiency, and thus provides strong support for target identification. Taking advantage of the process, the resulting biosensors are being explored for sensitive detection of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, with a limit of detection as low as 0.037 pg/mL. Also, this study contributes to the advancement of photoelectrochemical biosensing technology and opens up new avenues for the development of sensitive and accurate analytical tools in the field of bioanalysis.

N-nitrosamines (NAs) are highly carcinogenic compounds commonly found in food, beverages, and consumer products. Due to their wide polarity range, it is challenging to find a suitable carbon adsorbent that can simultaneously adsorb and enrich both polar and nonpolar NAs with good recovery. In this study, nitrogen-doped magnetic mesoporous carbon nanospheres (M-MCN) were prepared and employed as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) to extract and concentrate four NAs. The introduction of nitrogen functional groups enhanced the hydrophilicity of the carbon material, allowing M-MCN to achieve a balance between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, resulting in good recovery for both polar and nonpolar NAs. A method combining MSPE with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was developed for the determination of NAs in processed meat and alcoholic beverages. The method exhibited a good linear range (1-100 ng g-1, r2 > 0.9967) and trace-level detection (0.53-6.6 ng g-1). The recovery rates for the four NAs ranged between 85.7 and 110.7 %, with intra-day precision expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD) between 4.1 and 10.7 %, and inter-day precision between 4.8 and 12.9 %. The results demonstrated not only good accuracy and precision but also provided a new adsorbent for the enrichment of trace-level NAs in processed meat and alcoholic beverage samples.

In this work, a microfluidic immunosensor chip was developed by incorporating microfluidic technology with electrochemiluminescence (ECL) for sensitive detection of human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2). The immunosensor chip can achieve robust reproducibility in mass production by integrating multiple detection units in a series. Notably, nanoscale materials can be better adapted to microfluidic systems, greatly enhancing the accuracy of the immunosensor chip. Ag@Au NCs closed by glutathione (GSH) were introduced in the ECL microfluidic immunosensor system with excellent and stable ECL performance. The synthesized CeO2-Au was applied as a coreaction promoter in the ECL signal amplification system, which made the result of HER2 detection more reliable. In addition, the designed microfluidic immunosensor chip integrated the biosensing system into a microchip, realizing rapid and accurate detection of HER2 by its high throughput and low usage. The developed short peptide ligand NARKFKG (NRK) achieved an effective connection between the antibody and nanocarrier for improving the detection efficiency of the sensor. The immunosensor chip had better storage stability and sensitivity than traditional detection methods, with a wide detection range from 10 fg·mL-1 to 100 ng·mL-1 and a low detection limit (LOD) of 3.29 fg·mL-1. In general, a microfluidic immunosensor platform was successfully constructed, providing a new idea for breast cancer (BC) clinical detection.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) may have been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Middle-aged and older adults, ages 45 years or older, are at higher risk of COVID-19 mortality and social isolation. However, most studies on IPV during the pandemic do not focus on this important subpopulation. Informed by the social-ecological theory, this study examines individual, household, community, and country-level correlates of IPV among middle-aged and older adults in multiple countries using a cross-sectional online survey. Data from 2867 participants aged 45 or older in the International Sexual Health and Reproductive Health (I-SHARE) survey from July 2020 to February 2021 were described using univariate analysis. IPV was defined using four validated WHO measures. Individual characteristics included self-isolation and food security. At the country-level, we examined social distancing stringency. Logistic regression models with a random intercept for country were conducted to explore IPV correlates among 1730 eligible individuals from 20 countries with complete data. Most participants were heterosexual (2469/2867), cisgender (2531/2867) females (1589/2867) between the ages of 45-54 (1539/2867). 12.1% (346/2867) of participants experienced IPV during social distancing measures. After adjustment, participants who self-isolated experienced 1.4 (95% CI 1.0, 2.0, p = 0.04) times the odds of IPV compared to those who had not isolated. Those who reported an increase in food insecurity compared to pre-pandemic experienced 2.2 times the odds (95% CI 1.6, 3.0, p<0.0001) of IPV compared to those who did not report increased food insecurity. People in countries with more stringent social distancing policies were less likely to experience IPV compared to people in countries with lower levels of stringency (aOR = 0.6, 95% CI 0.4, 0.9, p = 0.04). IPV was common among middle-aged and older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our data suggest the need for further crisis management and social protection measures for middle-aged and older adults who have intersecting vulnerabilities to IPV to mitigate COVID-19 impact.

Background: Severe burn injury causes a hypermetabolic response, resulting in muscle protein catabolism and multiple organ damage syndrome. However, this response has not yet been continuously characterized by metabolomics in patients. This study aims to quantify temporal changes in the metabolic processes of patients with severe burns. Methods: We employed 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to scrutinize metabolic alterations during the initial 35 days following burn injury in a cohort of 17 adult patients with severe burns, with 10 healthy individuals included as controls. Plasma specimens were collected from patients on postburn days 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35. After performing multivariate statistical analysis, repeated-measures analysis of variance and time-series analysis, we quantified changes in metabolite concentrations. Results: Among the 36 metabolites quantified across 119 samples from burn patients, branched-chain amino acids, glutamate, glycine, glucose, pyruvate, lactate, trimethylamine N-oxide and others exhibited obvious temporal variations in concentration. Notably, these metabolites could be categorized into three clusters based on their temporal characteristics. The initial response to injury was characterized by changes in lactate and amino acids, while later changes were driven by an increase in fatty acid catabolism and microbial metabolism, leading to the accumulation of ketone bodies and microbial metabolites. Conclusions: Metabolomics techniques utilizing NMR have the potential to monitor the intricate processes of metabolism in patients with severe burns. This study confirmed that the third day after burn injury serves as the boundary between the ebb phase and the flow phase. Furthermore, identification of three distinct temporal patterns of metabolites revealed the intrinsic temporal relationships between these metabolites, providing clinical data for optimizing therapeutic strategies.

Objective: The increasing identification of pulmonary nodules has led to a growing emphasis on segmentectomy. Nevertheless, the surgical process for segmentectomy is complex and optimizing segmentectomy is a critical clinical concern. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and short- and long-term efficacy of V6-preserving superior segmentectomy. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent thoracoscopic superior segmentectomy at our hospital between January 2019 and June 2020. Eligible patients were categorized into an V6 vein-preserving segmentectomy (VVPS) group and a Non V6 vein-preserving segmentectomy (NVVPS) group depending on the preservation of V6. Primary outcome measures encompassed the evaluation of surgical safety (surgical margins, 3-year overall survival, and disease-free survival), whereas secondary measures included postoperative complication rates, operative time, estimated intraoperative blood loss, length of hospital stay, and associated costs. Results: The analysis included a final cohort of 78 patients. In the NVVPS group (n = 43), 95.3 % of patients exceeded the tumor diameter, and no positive surgical margins were observed. The 3-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates for the NVVPS group were 95.3 %, with no significant differences in OS (p = 0.572) and DFS (P = 0.800) compared with the VVPS group. Additionally, the median total hospitalization cost for the NVVPS group was 41,400 RMB (IQR, 38,800-43,400), which was significantly lower than that of the VVPS group, showing statistical significance (P < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were observed in the incidence of postoperative complications and length of stay between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: V6-preserving superior segmentectomy is a secure and optimized surgical alternative. Its streamlined procedure facilitates easier adoption in primary healthcare facilities, rendering it a superior choice for superior segmentectomy.

BACKGROUND: Accurately fitting diffusion-time-dependent diffusion MRI (td-dMRI) models poses challenges due to complex and nonlinear formulas, signal noise, and limited clinical data acquisition. PURPOSE: Introduce a Bayesian methodology to refine microstructural fitting within the IMPULSED (Imaging Microstructural Parameters Using Limited Spectrally Edited Diffusion) model and optimize the prior distribution within the Bayesian framework. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Involving 69 pediatric patients (median age 6 years, interquartile range [IQR] 3-9 years, 61% male) with 41 low-grade and 28 high-grade gliomas, of which 76.8% were identified within the brainstem or cerebellum. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3 T, oscillating gradient spin-echo (OGSE) and pulsed gradient spin-echo (PGSE). ASSESSMENT: The Bayesian method's performance in fitting cell diameter ( d $$ d $$ ), intracellular volume fraction ( f in $$ {f}_{in} $$ ), and extracellular diffusion coefficient ( D ex $$ {D}_{ex} $$ ) was compared against the NLLS method, considering simulated and experimental data. The tumor region-of-interest (ROI) were manually delineated on the b0 images. The diagnostic performance in distinguishing high- and low-grade gliomas was assessed, and fitting accuracy was validated against H&E-stained pathology. STATISTICAL TESTS: T-test, receiver operating curve (ROC), area under the curve (AUC) and DeLong's test were conducted. Significance considered at P < 0.05. RESULTS: Bayesian methodology manifested increased accuracy with robust estimates in simulation (RMSE decreased by 29.6%, 40.9%, 13.6%, and STD decreased by 29.2%, 43.5%, and 24.0%, respectively for d $$ d $$ , f in $$ {f}_{in} $$ , and D ex $$ {D}_{ex} $$ compared to NLLS), indicating fewer outliers and reduced error. Diagnostic performance for tumor grade was similar in both methods, however, Bayesian method generated smoother microstructural maps (outliers ratio decreased by 45.3% ± 19.4%) and a marginal enhancement in correlation with H&E staining result (r = 0.721 for f in $$ {f}_{in} $$ compared to r = 0.698 using NLLS, P = 0.5764). DATA CONCLUSION: The proposed Bayesian method substantially enhances the accuracy and robustness of IMPULSED model estimation, suggesting its potential clinical utility in characterizing cellular microstructure. Acute hypotension episode (AHE) is one of the most critical complications in intensive care unit (ICU). A timely and precise AHE prediction system can provide clinicians with sufficient time to respond with proper therapeutic measures, playing a crucial role in saving patients' lives. Recent studies have focused on utilizing more complex models to improve predictive performance. However, these models are not suitable for clinical application due to limited computing resources for bedside monitors. To address this challenge, we propose an efficient lightweight dilated shuffle group network (LDSG-Net). It effectively incorporates shuffling operations into grouped convolutions on the channel and dilated convolutions on the temporal dimension, enhancing global and local feature extraction while reducing computational load. Our benchmarking experiments on the MIMIC-III and VitalDB datasets, comprising 6,036 samples from 1,304 patients and 2,958 samples from 1,047 patients, respectively, demonstrate that our model outperforms other state-of-the-art lightweight CNNs in terms of balancing parameters and computational complexity. Additionally, we discovered that the utilization of multiple physiological signals significantly improves the performance of AHE prediction. External validation on the MIMIC-IV dataset confirmed our findings, with prediction accuracy for AHE 5 minutes prior reaching 93.04% and 92.04% on the MIMIC-III and VitalDB datasets, respectively, and 89.47% in external verification. Our study demonstrates the potential of lightweight CNN architectures in clinical applications, providing a promising solution for real-time AHE prediction under resource constraints in ICU settings, thereby marking a significant step forward in improving patient care.

OBJECTIVE: Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignant neoplasms in elderly males, with radical prostatectomy being the established therapeutic approach for localized disease. Patients undergoing this surgical procedure frequently experience increased negative emotions and symptomatology during the perioperative period, likely due to concerns about the illness and its treatment. The present study aims to investigate the effects of a novel educational approach involving a whole-process visualization and collaborative nursing discussions on perioperative symptoms and emotional well-being in radical prostatectomy patients. METHODS: Data were prospectively collected from 310 patients admitted to the hospital between June 2021 and December 2023, all of whom were scheduled to undergo radical prostatectomy. These patients were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (receiving new model education) or the control group (receiving conventional education), with 155 patients in each group. The study compared basic demographic information, anxiety and depression scores, fear of disease progression scores, quality-of-life scores, main symptom scores, and changes in perioperative vital signs between the two groups. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of age, comorbidities, insurance type, education level, income, and tumor history (P > 0.05). Similarly, there were no significant differences in anxiety and depression scores, proportion of patients with anxiety and depression, vital signs, and fear of disease progression scores between the two groups at Time 1 stage (P > 0.05). During stages Time 2 and Time 3, the intervention group exhibited lower anxiety and depression scores, a lower proportion of anxious and depressed patients, as well as significantly reduced blood pressure and heart rate fluctuations compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Following radical prostatectomy, the main symptoms of patients, such as pain, nausea, and fatigue, were assessed using the MADIS Symptom Assessment Scale on days 1-3 post-surgery. The intervention group exhibited significantly lower scores for three symptoms compared to the control group (P < 0.05); at Time 4 stage, the patients in the intervention group also demonstrated significantly improved quality-of-life scores compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Additionally, blood pressure and heart rate of patients returned to baseline levels at Time 4 stage, with no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). Nevertheless, the anxiety and depression scores in the intervention group at the Time 4 stage remained significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Additionally, the fear of disease progression scores in both groups were lower than those at the Time 1 stage, with a more pronounced improvement observed in the intervention group compared to the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Patients diagnosed with malignant tumors often experience fear and anxiety regarding the progression of their disease and upcoming surgery, as well as uncertainty surrounding their treatment and prognosis. This heightened emotional distress can contribute to a greater symptom burden during the perioperative period. Utilizing a whole-process visualization and collaborative nursing discussion approach, as compared to traditional communication methods, has been shown to alleviate patients' fears, reduce anxiety and depression, and ultimately lessen the symptom burden experienced during the perioperative phase. Ultimately, this approach can enhance the overall quality of life for patients facing malignant tumors.

We investigated the protective effect of walnut peptides and YVPFPLP (YP-7) on scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice and ß-amyloid (Aß)-induced excitotoxic injury in primary hippocampal neurons, respectively. Additionally, the protective mechanism of YP-7 on neuronal excitotoxicity was explored. Mouse behavioral and hippocampal slice morphology experiments indicate that YP-7 improves the learning and memory abilities of cognitively impaired mice and protects synaptic integrity. Immunofluorescence, western blotting, and electrophysiological experiments on primary hippocampal neurons indicate that YP-7 inhibits neuronal damage caused by excessive excitation of neurons induced by Aß. HT-22 cell treatment with peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) activators and inhibitors showed that YP-7 activates PPARγ expression and maintains normal neuronal function by forming stable complexes with PPARγ to inhibit the extracellular regulated protein kinase pathway. Therefore, YP-7 can ameliorate glutamate-induced excitotoxicity and maintain neuronal signaling. This provides a theoretical basis for active peptides to ameliorate excitotoxicity and the development of functional foods.

Starch adhesive is a commonly used bonding glue that is sustainable, formaldehyde-free and biodegradable. However, there are obviously some problems related to its high viscosity, poor water and mildew resistance. Hence, exploring a starch-based adhesive with good properties that satisfies the requirements of wood processing presents the context of the current research. Thus, corn starch was used as raw material to form oxidized starch (OCS) via oxidation using sodium periodate, it was reacted with a synthesis polyurea compound that prepared from hexanediamine-urea (HU) obtained by deamination to yield a oxidized starch-hexanediamine-urea adhesive (denoted hereafter as OCSHU). The oxidation process was optimized in terms of oxidant concentration, reaction time and temperature. Furthermore, the impact of HU addition on the mechanical properties of the adhesive was explored. Results indicate adhesive exhibited outstanding shear strength, when 13 % of NaIO4 was used as an oxidant to treat starch at 55 °C for 24 h, and involved in a subsequent reaction with 40 % of HU. The dry shear strength, 24 h cold water strength, 3 h hot water strength and 3 h boiling water strength are 1.84, 1.50, 1.32, and 1.31 MPa. Meantime, OCSHU adhesive solution revealed good storage stability whereas cured resin exhibited mildew resistance. The developed adhesive is a simple and green biomass wood adhesive.
