RESUMEN

Resonant exchange of the chiral Majorana fermions (MFs) that is coupled to two parallel Majorana zero modes (MZMs) or two parallel quantum dots (QDs) is investigated. We find that, in the two QDs coupling case, the resonant exchange for the chiral MFs is analogous to that in the MZM coupling case. We further propose a circuit based on topological superconductor, which is formed by the proximity coupling of a quantum anomalous Hall insulator and a s-wave superconductor, to observe the resonant exchange of chiral MFs pairs. The numerical calculations show that the resonant transmission of the chiral MFs can be adjusted by varying the coupling parameters at superconductor phase differenceΔφ=π. It is particularly noteworthy that, by only modulating the coupling strength between the two QDs, the resonant exchange may be switched on or off. By adding another MZM, the non-Abelian braiding like operation can be realized. Therefore, our design scheme may provide another way for non-Abelian braiding operation of MFs and the findings may have potential application value in the realization of topological quantum computers.

RESUMEN

Recycling resources from wastewater is even more important for developing a more sustainable society. Disposing sewage sludge, which accumulates most pollutants and resources in sewage, is the main challenge in wastewater pollution control and resource utilization. Heavy metals (HMs) are the greatest constraint limiting the application of sewage sludge to land as a sustainable use of this material. We conducted a meta-analysis of the concentrations of HMs in Chinese sewage sludge by combining data from studies published from 2000 to 2019 (N = 8477). Over this period, the reported concentrations of HMs in sewage sludge declined in three stages (a fluctuating stage, a slight decrease stage, and a rapid and stable decrease stage). The results revealed that economic development and environmental policy implementation were the main factors mitigating HM pollution in sewage sludge in China. Moreover, if environmental regulations were strengthened and HM pollution-mitigation strategies were made consistent, such that the proportion of sewage sludge applied to land in China could be increased from 18.6% to 48.0% (the proportion applied to land in the United States), the ecosystem services analysis showed that huge ecological-economic benefits could be realized (3.1 billion Chinese Yuan) and the use of fertilizers could be substantially reduced (the use of nitrogen fertilizers by 8.5% and the use of phosphate fertilizers by 18.1%). This review shows that China should formulate a unified policy and interdepartmental committee for sustainable application of sewage sludge to land and wastewater resource recycling management.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the levels of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E in children with obesity and their influencing factors. METHODS: A total of 273 children with obesity who attended the Department of Clinical Nutrition, Xi'an Children's Hospital, from January 2019 to April 2021 were enrolled as the obesity group. A total of 226 children with normal body weight who underwent physical examination during the same period were enrolled as the control group. Anthropometric parameters and body composition were measured for both groups, and the serum concentrations of vitamins A, D, and E were also measured. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the obesity group had significantly higher serum levels of vitamin A [(1.32±0.21) µmol/L vs (1.16±0.21) µmol/L, P<0.001] and vitamin E [(9.3±1.4) mg/L vs (8.3±1.2) mg/L, P<0.001] and a significant reduction in the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [(49±22) nmol/L vs (62±24) nmol/L, P<0.001]. In the obesity group, the prevalence rates of marginal vitamin A deficiency, vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency, and vitamin E insufficiency were 5.5% (15/273), 56.8% (155/273), and 4.0% (11/273), respectively. After adjustment for body mass index Z-score and waist-to-height ratio, serum vitamin A level was positively correlated with age (P<0.001), while vitamins E and 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were negatively correlated with age in children with obesity (P<0.001). After adjustment for age, the serum levels of vitamin A, vitamin E and 25-hydroxyvitamin D were not correlated with degree of obesity, percentage of body fat, and duration of obesity in children with obesity, while the serum levels of vitamins A and E were positively correlated with waist-to-height ratio (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: There are higher serum levels of vitamins A and E in children with obesity, especially in those with abdominal obesity, while serum vitamin D nutritional status is poor and worsens with age. Therefore, vitamin D nutritional status should be taken seriously for children with obesity, and vitamin D supplementation should be performed when necessary.

RESUMEN

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with excellent photocatalytic properties and unique piezoelectric response have attracted great attention. However, these characters are rare for traditional 2D structures. With an intrinsic electric field, the Janus 2D materials show great promise in photocatalytic and out-of-plane piezoelectric applications. Herein, we show that Janus In2X2X' (X and X' = S, Se, and Te) monolayers are desirable in the overall water splitting and piezoelectric devices. Comprehensive investigations reveal that the band gaps of these Janus monolayers are from 0.34 to 2.27 eV. With proper band edge positions, strong solar absorption, fast transfer and efficient separation of carriers, and high solar to hydrogen (STH) efficiencies (reaching 37.70%), eight members of them stand out. Besides, the electrons and holes have sufficient driving forces in the process of redox reaction. The piezoelectric response for in- and out-of-plane is superior for all monolayers. These compelling features make them suitable for photocatalysts, sensors, actuators, and energy conversion devices.

RESUMEN

The van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH) has attracted widespread attention as a unique structure for future electronic and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, we constructed the ZnO-SeMoS and ZnO-SMoSe vdWHs and systematically investigated their electronic structures and band alignments considering vertical strain and external electric field effects. It is found that the ZnO-SeMoS and ZnO-SMoSe vdWHs both exhibit type-II band alignment with indirect band gaps of 1.31 and 0.63 eV respectively, depending on the interface characteristics. What's more, the band alignment of these two heterostructures can be tuned to type I or type III, and their band gap can be modified to direct feature by applying vertical strain and an electric field. The results reveal that ZnO/MoSSe vdWHs have promising potential in multi-functional nanodevices, and provide a way to modify the electronic properties of Janus-based heterojunctions using interface characteristics.

RESUMEN

Three novel dimeric bithiophenes, echinbithiophenedimers A-C (1-3), along with two known thiophenes, 4 and 5, were obtained from Echinops latifolius, and their structures were identified through extensive spectroscopic analysis and electronic circular dichroism calculations. Compounds 1-3 possessed new carbon skeletons; they are dimeric bithiophenes with 1 and 2 featuring an unprecedented 1,3-dioxolane ring system and 3 featuring an unusual 1,4-dioxane ring. These compounds are the first examples of bithiophene dimers furnished by different cyclic diethers. Dimeric bithiophenes 1-3 had good antifungal activities against five phytopathogenic fungi, and compound 3 showed excellent activity against Alternaria alternate and Pyricularia oryzae, with a minimal inhibitory concentration value of 8 µg/mL, which was close to or higher than that of carbendazim. Moreover, its effect on the mycelial morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Compounds 1-3, which were demonstrated to be nonphototoxic thiophenes, exhibited better nematicidal activity than the commercial nematicide ethoprophos against Meloidogyne incognita. This study revealed that dimeric bithiophenes containing 1,3-dioxolane or 1,4-dioxane rings could be used as novel antifungal and nematicidal agents for controlling plant fungal and nematode pathogens.

RESUMEN

Germinating seeds can release diverse phytochemicals that repel, inhibit, or kill pathogens such as root-knot nematodes and seed-borne fungi. However, little is known about the composition of these phytochemicals and their effects on pathogens. In this study, we demonstrated that tomato seed exudates can attract the nematode Meloidogyne incognita using a dual-choice assay. Eighteen compounds were then isolated and identified from the exudates. Of these, esters (1-3), fatty acids (4-6), and phenolic acids (10-12) were proven to be the signaling molecules that facilitated the host-seeking process of second-stage juveniles (J2s) of nematodes, while alkaloids (17 and 18) disrupted J2s in locating their host. Furthermore, some phenolic acids and alkaloids showed antifungal effects against seed-borne fungi. In particular, ferulic acid (12) showed obvious activity against Aspergillus flavus (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), 32 µg/mL), while dihydrocapsaicin (17) showed noticeable activity against Fusarium oxysporum (MIC, 16 µg/mL). Overall, this study presents the first evidence that M. incognita can be attracted to or deterred by various compounds in seed exudates through identification of the structures of the compounds in the exudates and analysis of their effects on nematodes. Furthermore, some antifungal compounds were also found. The findings of this work suggest that seed exudates are new source for finding insights into the development of plant protective substances with nematocidal and antifungal effects.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) has a negative impact on children's health and imposes a long-term burden on families. With economic development and cultural improvements, parents and medical professionals pay more attention to NE. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of NE among children ages 5-12 years in Xi'an, China. METHODS: A stratified cluster sampling method was used to conduct a cross-sectional study of NE in 10 kindergartens and 20 primary schools in Xi'an. We used univariate analysis to compare the prevalences of characteristics such as gender, duration of disposable diaper (DD) use, toilet training onset time, daily living habits, academic performance, and family history of NE. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate odds ratio and to determine risk factors of NE. RESULTS: The study included 6568 children ages 5-12 years, of which 262 (3.99%) had NE. The prevalence rates of NE decreased with age, with the highest prevalence at age 5 (9.09% for boys; 6.03% for girls). However, the prevalence increased with duration of DD use. Children experienced more NE if they never accepted toilet training (7.83%) or if they drank sugary beverages during the day (5.36%). Sleep disorders, sweets intake, drinking low amounts of plain water during the day, and family history of NE, were statistically associated with NE. CONCLUSION: NE was closely associated with a family history of NE, being male, long-term use of DD, delayed toilet training, drinking sugary beverages and/or consuming little plain water, and sleep disorders. A supportive parental attitude towards NE and timely medical treatment can improve the quality of life of enuretic children.

RESUMEN

Taking naturally growing grass (NG) as comparison, high-throughput sequencing technique was adopted to examine the effects of Lolium perenne (LP), Trifolium repens (TR), Vulpia myuros (VM), and Vicia villosa (VV) cultivation on soil microbial community in apple orchard of Yanggu County, Shandong Province, and the correlations of soil microbial community with soil nutrient and physicochemical property. The results showed that LP increased the relative abundance of Alternaria and Aspergillus in soil, TR increased that of Gibberella, VM increased Aureobasidium and Chaetomium, and VV increased probiotics such as Nitrososophaera and Metarhizium. However, the quantity of pathogenic bacteria Ralstonia was improved in NG treatment. Results from Spearman correlation analysis showed that the abundance of Bacillus was significantly positively correlated with the concentration of soil organic matter. The abundance of Aspergillus was significantly negatively correlated with available phosphorus, available potassium, CEC, and organic matter. The abundance of Metarhizium was significantly positively correlated with soil pH and CEC. Planting VV between rows of apple orchards, and enhancing the soil organic matter and nutrients content in a certain extent, helped to improve soil micro-ecological environment.

RESUMEN

Botryosphaeria dothidea is an important fungal pathogen that causes apple ring rot, which can significantly reduce apple yield. Fungicide applications are the main control measure of apple ring rot worldwide. Pyraclostrobin is a quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicide that has yet to be registered for control of B. dothidea in China. Baseline sensitivity of B. dothidea to pyraclostrobin (EC50 of mycelial growth inhibition) was assessed for 97 isolates collected in Shandong Province. The EC50 values ranged from 0.7010 to 7.1378 µg/ml with the mean value of 3.0870 µg/ml and displayed a unimodal frequency distribution. After cultured on fungicide-free PDA medium or on apples for multiple generations, the B. dothidea-resistant isolates (RST) remained resistant to pyraclostrobin, but exhibited similar virulence as the susceptible isolates (ST). Cross-resistance investigation revealed that pyraclostrobin was not cross-resistant to tebuconazole, flusilazole, carbendazim, and iprodione. Field evolution showed that pyraclostrobin at 200 and 250 g a.i./ha provided greater than 80% control efficacy against apple ring rot disease when applied as a therapeutic or preventive fungicide. The efficacy was similar to fungicides that have been registered for apple.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Life expectancy is a statistical measure of the average time an organism is expected to live. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of injury-related mortality on life expectancy in Zhejiang Province. METHODS: Our study used standard life tables to calculate life expectancy and cause-removed life expectancy based on mortality data from the Zhejiang Chronic Disease Surveillance System. RESULTS: Life expectancy of residents in Zhejiang was 77.83 years in 2013, with females having a higher life expectancy than males. The decrease in life expectancy caused by injury-related deaths was 1.19 years, the effect of which was reduced for females and urban residents compared with males and rural residents. The greatest impact on life expectancy was road traffic injuries (RTIs), (0.29 years lost overall, 0.36 for men vs. 0.21 for women and 0.26 for urban residents vs. 0.31 for rural residents). The main causes were falls (0.29 years lost overall, 0.30 for men vs. 0.28 for women and 0.28 for urban residents vs. 0.30 for rural residents), followed by drowning (0.15 years lost), suicide (0.11 years lost), and poisoning (0.04 years). For children less than 5 years old and elders aged over 65, drowning had a greater impact than falls. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that injury deaths had a major impact on life expectancy in Zhejiang. More attention should be paid to road traffic injury, and preventive action should be taken to reduce injury-related deaths to increase life expectancy, especially in children under five years of age and the elders over 65 years of age.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To evaluate the association between sleep duration, snoring and diabetes according to gender and menopausal status in rural China. METHODS: The data were part of the baseline survey of China Kadoorie Biobank, from a rural county in the south-east costal Zhejiang province. Participants including 24,027 men and 33,677 women aged 30-79 years were enrolled during 2004-2008. Multivariable logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for diabetes. RESULTS: Sleep duration was shown to have a U-shaped association with diabetes in women, in particular in postmenopausal women after adjustment for potential confounders. Compared with 7-h sleepers, ORs (95 % CIs) of sleep duration ≤5 and ≥10 h for diabetes were 1.32 (1.02-1.69) and 1.30 (1.03-1.65), respectively, in postmenopausal women (P for quadratic trend = 0.016). However, this U-shaped association was not obvious in men and premenopausal women. Frequently snoring was positively associated with diabetes in all participants. However, this association was not independent of socioeconomic status, health behaviors, obesity and chronic diseases. With increasing sleep duration, the proportion of frequently snoring increased in all participants (P trend <0.05). Postmenopausal women had 23 % (95 % CI 6-44 %) higher odds of diabetes compared with premenopausal women, and the duration of menopause had cumulative effects on diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: Short and long sleep durations were significantly associated with diabetes in postmenopausal women, independent of potential confounders. The proportion of frequently snoring had linear trend with sleep duration. Postmenopausal status and the duration of menopause increased the odds of diabetes.

RESUMEN

Evidence indicates that breakfast consumption is associated with a cluster of health-related behaviors, yet studies in mainland China are scarce. This study is conducted to describe the frequency of breakfast consumption among Chinese adolescents and examine its associations with other dietary, physical activity, sedentary, sleep, cigarette-smoking, and alcohol-drinking behaviors. Breakfast consumption and other health-related behaviors data was collected via a self-administered questionnaire in a cross-sectional study in Zhejiang Province, China. A total of 19,542 school-aged adolescents were recruited in this survey. The associations between breakfast consumption and other health-related behaviors were examined using logistic regression models. A significantly higher prevalence of daily breakfast consumption was found among students who were younger (p for trend <0.001), from urban schools (p < 0.001), and academic high schools (p < 0.001). More frequent vegetable and milk consumption, greater physical activity, and longer sleep duration were positively associated with daily breakfast consumption, while soft drinks and fast food consumption, computer use, cigarette-smoking and alcohol-drinking behaviors were inversely associated. The prevalence of irregular breakfast consumption was relatively high among Chinese adolescents in Zhejiang Province. Daily breakfast consumption was associated with a constellation of health-related behaviors.

RESUMEN

As angiogenesis and vasculogenesis involve the complex network structures of various types of cells, extracellular matrix components, and cytokines, it is still difficult to exactly mimic the microenvironment of vascularization in vivo. In our study, we constructed a complex containing highly proliferative fibroblasts that can secrete extracellular matrix components and growth factors to chemotaxize endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in an attempt to create an ideal microenvironment for quick vascularization. Amniotic membrane microparticles (mAM) rich in type IV collagen (COL IV) and laminin (LN) were prepared, and human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) were infected with lentivirus (LV) of overexpression of SDF-1α to construct SDF-1α(ov)HDF. Using the rotary cell culture system (RCCS), mAM was loaded with HDF or SDF-1α(ov)HDF to construct HDF-mAM and SDF-1α(ov)HDF-mAM complexes. The complexes were able to secrete various types of active peptides (IL-6, IL-8, TGF-ß, and bFGF) during in vitro culture. In addition, SDF-1α(ov)HDF-mAM complex highly expressed SDF-1α. Transwell assay showed SDF-1α(ov)HDF-mAM complex had an apparent chemotactic effect on EPCs. Transplantation of complexes onto full-thickness skin defects of C57BL mice further demonstrated that SDF-1α expression and the number of peripheral EPCs at days 3, 5, and 7 in the SDF-1α(ov)HDF-mAM group were significantly higher than that in other groups (p < 0.01). The local microvascular density at day 10 of transplantation showed that the microvascular density in the SDF-1α(ov)HDF-mAM group was significantly higher than that in HDF-mAM group (p < 0.01). In conclusion, HDF-mAM had a strong proliferative activity and could be used to create a sound microenvironment for quick vascularization by secreting multiple cytokines and extracellular matrix components. Overexpression of SDF-1α could chemotaxize EPCs to reach local wounds, thus further accelerating angiogenesis in the transplant site. The technique described may prove to be a new model for accelerating vascularization of tissue and organ transplants and chronic ischemic wounds.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors of progressive brain contusion and to evaluate their impact on patients' outcome. METHODS: One hundred and thirty two patients with traumatic brain contusion were enrolled in the study, including 70 cases with progressive contusion and 62 cases with non-progressive contusion. The risk factors were investigated with univariate and multivariate Logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The univariate analysis showed that Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) at admission, contusion volume at the first brain CT scans, midline shift, combined with skull fracture, subarachnoid hemorrhage, epidural hematoma, subdural hematoma, location of brain contusion, D-dimer levels, combined with type 2 diabetes were associated with progressive brain contusion. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that GCS at admission, contusion volume at the first CT scans, combined with subarachnoid hemorrhage, combined with type 2 diabetes were the independent risk factors for disease progression. The outcome in the progressive group was more aggravated than that in non-progressive group (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Patients with disturbance of consciousness, the larger contusion volume, combined with subarachnoid hemorrhage and diabetes are at risk for progressive brain contusion and unfavorable outcome.

RESUMEN

Evidence indicates an increased cancer risk among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, yet studies in mainland China are scarce. Based on Diabetes Surveillance System linking to Cancer Surveillance System of Zhejiang Province in China, we explored the cancer risk among T2DM patients. Totally, 327,268 T2DM patients were identified and followed from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2013. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported. Overall cancer risk was found significantly increased with an SIR of 1.15 (95% CI 1.12-1.19) and 1.25 (95% CI 1.21-1.30) in males and females, respectively. Regarding specific cancer sites, risks of liver, colon, rectum, pancreas, and kidney were significantly increased with SIRs of 1.26 (95% CI 1.16-1.36), 1.47 (95% CI 1.29-1.67), 1.25 (95% CI 1.09-1.43), 2.81 (95% CI 2.50-3.16) and 1.61 (95% CI 1.28-2.03) in males, 1.53 (95% CI 1.35-1.73), 1.33 (95% CI 1.15-1.54), 1.29 (95% CI 1.10-1.51), 3.62 (95% CI 3.20-4.09) and 1.71 (95% CI 1.28-2.29) in females, respectively. A significant increased SIR was noted for prostate (1.80, 95% CI 1.58-2.06). Significant increased SIRs for lung (1.32, 95% CI 1.20-1.44) and stomach (1.16, 95% CI 1.03-1.30) were observed in females. We suggested an increased cancer risk among T2DM patients.

RESUMEN

The success of conventional suicide gene therapy for cancer treatment is still limited because of lack of efficient delivery methods, as well as poor penetration into tumor tissues. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have recently emerged as potential vehicles in improving delivery issues. However, these stem cells are usually genetically modified using viral gene vectors for suicide gene overexpression to induce sufficient therapeutic efficacy. This approach may result in safety risks for clinical translation. Therefore, we designed a novel strategy that uses non-viral gene vector in modifying MSCs with suicide genes to reduce risks. In addition, these cells were co-administrated with prodrug-encapsulated liposomes for synergistic anti-tumor effects. Results demonstrate that this strategy is effective for gene and prodrug delivery, which co-target tumor tissues, to achieve a significant decrease in tumor colonization and a subsequent increase in survival in a murine melanoma lung metastasis model. Moreover, for the first time, we demonstrated the permeability of MSCs within tumor nests by using an in vitro 3D tumor spheroid model. Thus, the present study provides a new strategy to improve the delivery problem in conventional suicide gene therapy and enhance the therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, this study also presents new findings to improve our understanding of MSCs in tumor-targeted gene delivery.

RESUMEN

In order to gain better understanding of the oviposition preference of Grapholitha molesta, we studied the ovipositional preference on different host fruit leaves, different parts of peach bran- ches and different varieties of peach in simulated outdoor conditions. The adult ovipositional preference on the host fruit leaves was in descending order, i. e. peach > cherry > apple > plum > pear > crabapple > apricot, and 33.5% of eggs were laid on the peach leaves with the average number of egg on one peach leaf being 8.3. There were differences in egg distribution on both sides of the leaves in different hosts. The number of egg laid on the positive surface was more than on the reverse surface of apple and crabapple leaves, and vice versus for peach, plum, pear and apricot leaves, and 3.3 times more eggs were laid on the reverse surface of peach leaves than on the positive surface. The egg distribution had no significant difference on both sides of cherry leaves. The adult ovipositional preference on peach branches was in descending order of leaf > stipule > petiole > branch. The leaves were the major ovipositonal places with 88.7% of total eggs on. 72.5% of eggs were laid on the 10 leaves near the top unexpanded leaflets, and the maximum number was on the 3rd leaf accounting for 9.3%, while only 1.1% of eggs were laid on the peach leaves after 25th. The ovipositional preference on different peach fruits was in descending order of nectarine > flat peach > prunus persica. The density and characteristics of the hair on host fruits and leaves were the primary factors affecting the ovipositional preference.

RESUMEN

Premature senescence can limit crop productivity by limiting the growth phase. In the present study, a spontaneous premature senescence mutant was identified in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Genetic analysis revealed that the premature senescence phenotype was controlled by a recessive mutation, which we named Oryza sativa premature senescence1 (ospse1). The ospse1 mutants showed premature leaf senescence from the booting stage and exhibited more severe symptoms during reproductive and ripening stages. Key yield-related agronomic traits such as 1,000-grain weight and seed-setting rate, but not panicle grain number, were significantly reduced in ospse1 plants. Chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate, and transpiration rate of ospse1 flag leaves were similar to the wild-type plants in vegetative stages, but these parameters decreased steeply in the mutant after the heading stage. Consistent with this, the senescence-associated genes OsNYC1 and OsSgr were up-regulated in ospse1 mutant during premature leaf senescence. The ospse1 locus was mapped to a 38-kb region on chromosome 1 and sequence analysis of this region identified a single-nucleotide deletion in the 3' region of an open reading frame (ORF) encoding a putative pectate lyase, leading to a frame shift and a longer ORF. Our results suggested that the premature senescence of the ospse1 may be regulated by a novel mechanism mediated by pectate lyase.
