RESUMEN

Designing electrocatalysts for seawater splitting remains challenging. A Ru-Co alloy supported by an N-doped carbon substrate catalyst has been designed using etching and a low-temperature treatment method. Studies show that the superior performance of this catalyst is related to the hollow-structured N-doped carbon frame and surface reconstruction of the Ru-Co alloy.

RESUMEN

In recent decades, many reports have been published on the composition and function of the tumor microenvironment (TME), among which cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) have received much attention. CAFs have different degrees of heterogeneity in terms of their origin, phenotype, and function and can be divided into different subpopulations. These subgroups may play different roles in the occurrence and development of tumors. In addition, CAFs are closely associated with tumor immunity and have been found to regulate immune cell activity and to suppress the tumor immune response. In this review, we systematize the heterogeneity and characteristics of CAFs, discuss how specific CAF subgroups contribute to cancer progression by inducing an immunosuppressive microenvironment, and finally, we examine the future clinical applications of CAF subgroups.

RESUMEN

Previous studies provide empirical evidence for the connection between air pollution and tourism. However, many of them take the nexus as a linear one. It remains unexplored whether any thresholds are required for the nexus to materialize. This study systematically investigates whether PM2.5 concentrations-an essential indicator of air pollution-affect tourism in China at various tourism development levels. We analyze 284 Chinese cities from 2008 to 2018 using the Unconditional Quantile Regression method. Our statistical results reveal that air pollution positively influences tourism (regarding tourist visits and tourism revenue) in areas with low tourism development levels. However, a complex correlation between air pollution and tourism emerges when tourism development has reached a certain level. The correlation is initially negative, then positive, and finally disappears. But, the overall correlation remains negative. The effects of the interaction between air pollution and tourism resources on tourism are inverted U-shaped, implying that tourism resources can mitigate the negative effects of air pollution on tourism only when tourism development has reached a certain level. Based on the above findings, the associated policy implications are discussed.

RESUMEN

For a long time, human activities have been prohibited in ecologically protected areas in the Ebinur Lake Wetland National Nature Reserve (ELWNNR). The implementation of total closure is one of the main methods for ecological protection. For arid zones, there is a lack of in-depth research on whether this measure contributes to ecological restoration in the reserve. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is considered to be the best indicator for ecological monitoring and has a key role to play in assessing the ecological impacts of total closure. In this study, we used Sentinel-2, Landsat-8, and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) remote sensing data to select optimal data and utilized Sen slope estimation, Mann-Kendall statistical tests, and the geographical detector model to quantitatively analyze the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) dynamics and its driving factors. Results were as follows: (1) The vegetation distribution of the Ebinur Lake Wetland National Nature Reserve (ELWNNR) had obvious spatial heterogeneity, showing low distribution in the middle and high distribution in the surroundings. The correlation coefficients of Landsat-8 and MODIS, Sentinel-2 and MODIS, and Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 were 0.952, 0.842, and 0.861, respectively. The NDVI calculated from MODIS remote sensing data was higher than the value calculated by Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 remote sensing images, and Landsat-8 remote sensing data were the most suitable data. (2) NDVI indicated more degraded areas on the whole, but the ecological recovery was obvious in the localized areas where anthropogenic closure was implemented. The ecological environment change was the result of the joint action of man and nature. Man-made intervention will change the local ecological environment, but the overall ecological environment change was still dominated by natural environmental factors. (3) Factors affecting the distribution of NDVI in descending order were as follows: precipitation > evapotranspiration > land use type > elevation > vegetation type > soil type > soil erosion > slope > temperature > slope direction. Precipitation was the main driver of vegetation change in ELWNNR. The synergistic effect of the factors showed two-factor enhancement and nonlinear enhancement, and the combined effect of the driving factors would increase the influence on NDVI.

RESUMEN

Bacillus velezensis has gained increasing recognition as a probiotic for improving animal growth performance and gut health. We identified six B. velezensis strains from sixty Bacillus isolates that were isolated from the cecal samples of fifteen different chicken breeds. We characterized the probiotic properties of these six B. velezensis strains. The effect of a selected strain (B. velezensis CML532) on chicken growth performance under normal feeding and Clostridium perfringens challenge conditions was also evaluated. The results revealed that the six B. velezensis strains differed in their probiotic properties, with strain CML532 exhibiting the highest bile salt and acid tolerance and high-yield enzyme and antibacterial activities. Genomic analyses showed that genes related to amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism, as well as genes related to starch and cellulose hydrolysis, were abundant in strain CML532. Dietary supplementation with strain CML532 promoted chicken growth, improved the gut barrier and absorption function, and modulated the gut microbiota. Under the C. perfringens challenge condition, strain CML532 alleviated intestinal damage, reduced ileal colonization of C. perfringens, and also improved chicken growth performance. Collectively, this study demonstrated that the newly isolated B. velezensis strain is a promising probiotic with beneficial effects on chicken growth performance and gut health.

RESUMEN

Nitroarenes are known for their stability, low toxicity, easy availability, and cost-effectiveness, making them one of the most fundamental chemical feedstocks. The direct utilization of nitroarenes as nitrogen sources in amidation reactions offers significant advantages over using arylamines. Herein, we disclose a streamlined method for constructing α-ketoamides through the direct coupling of nitroarenes with α-oxocarboxylic acids. This transformation obviates the need for preparing, isolating, and purifying arylamines, leading to improved efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and time savings.

RESUMEN

One of the most widely utilized methods for the construction of C(sp2)-N bonds is the transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling of aryl halides/boronic acids with amines, known as Ullmann condensation, Buchwald-Hartwig amination, and Chan-Lam coupling. However, aryl halides/boronic acids often require multi-step preparation while generating a large amount of corrosive and toxic waste, making the reaction less attractive. Herein, we present an unprecedented method for the C(sp2)-N formation via Buchwald-Hartwig-type reactions using synthetically upstream nitroarenes as the sole starting materials, thus eliminating the need for arylhalides and pre-formed arylamines. A diverse range of symmetrical di- and triarylamines were obtained in a single step from nitroarenes, and more importantly, various unsymmetrical di- and triarylamines were also highly selectively synthesized in a one-pot/two-step process. Furthermore, the success of the scale-up experiments, the late-stage functionalization of a drug intermediate, and the rapid preparation of hole-transporting material TCTA showcased the utility and practicality of this protocol in synthetic chemistry. Mechanistic studies indicate that this transformation may proceed via an arylamine intermediate generated in situ from the reduction of nitroarenes, which is followed by a denitrative Buchwald-Hartwig-type reaction with another nitroarene to form a C-N bond.

RESUMEN

Solid-state Li-S batteries (SSLSBs) are made of low-cost and abundant materials free of supply chain concerns. Owing to their high theoretical energy densities, they are highly desirable for electric vehicles1-3. However, the development of SSLSBs has been historically plagued by the insulating nature of sulfur4,5 and the poor interfacial contacts induced by its large volume change during cycling6,7, impeding charge transfer among different solid components. Here we report an S9.3I molecular crystal with I2 inserted in the crystalline sulfur structure, which shows a semiconductor-level electrical conductivity (approximately 5.9 × 10-7 S cm-1) at 25 °C; an 11-order-of-magnitude increase over sulfur itself. Iodine introduces new states into the band gap of sulfur and promotes the formation of reactive polysulfides during electrochemical cycling. Further, the material features a low melting point of around 65 °C, which enables repairing of damaged interfaces due to cycling by periodical remelting of the cathode material. As a result, an Li-S9.3I battery demonstrates 400 stable cycles with a specific capacity retention of 87%. The design of this conductive, low-melting-point sulfur iodide material represents a substantial advancement in the chemistry of sulfur materials, and opens the door to the practical realization of SSLSBs.

RESUMEN

d-π overlap, which represents overlap between metal-d and graphene-π orbitals to facilitate electron transfer, has rarely been reported. Ni/PtNi-G2 exhibits exceptional performance in seawater hydrogen evolution due to the electron-rich surface on Pt resulting from enhanced d-π overlap and subsequent electron transfer from graphene and Ni to Pt.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Using the published survival statistics from cancer registration or population-based studies, we aimed to describe the global pattern and trend of lung cancer survival. METHODS: By searching SinoMed, PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and SEER, all survival analyses from cancer registration or population-based studies of lung cancer were collected by the end of November 2022. The survival rates were extracted by sex, period, and country. The observed, relative, and net survival rates of lung cancer were applied to describe the pattern and time changes from the late 1990s to the early 21st century. RESULTS: Age-standardized 5-year relative/net survival rate of lung cancer was typically low, with 10%-20% for most regions. The highest age-standardized relative/net survival rate was observed in Japan (32.9%, 2010-2014), and the lowest was in India (3.7%, 2010-2014). In most countries, the five-year age-standardized relative/net survival rates of lung cancer were higher in females and younger people. The patients with adenocarcinoma had a better prognosis than other groups. In China, the highest 5-year overall relative/net survival rates were 27.90% and 31.62% in men and women in Jiangyin (2012-2013). CONCLUSION: Over the past decades, the prognosis of lung cancer has gradually improved, but significant variations were also observed globally. Worldwide, a better prognosis of lung cancer can be observed in females and younger patients. It is essential to compare and evaluate the histological or stage-specific survival rates of lung cancer between different regions in the future.

RESUMEN

Effective control and readout of qubits form the technical foundation of next-generation, transformative quantum information sciences and technologies. The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center, an intrinsic three-level spin system, is naturally relevant in this context due to its excellent quantum coherence, high fidelity of operations, and remarkable functionality over a broad range of experimental conditions. It is an active contender for the development and implementation of cutting-edge quantum technologies. Here, we report magnetic domain wall motion driven local control and measurements of the NV spin properties. By engineering the local magnetic field environment of an NV center via nanoscale reconfigurable domain wall motion, we show that NV photoluminescence, spin level energies, and coherence time can be reliably controlled and correlated to the magneto-transport response of a magnetic device. Our results highlight the electrically tunable dipole interaction between NV centers and nanoscale magnetic structures, providing an attractive platform to realize interactive information transfer between spin qubits and nonvolatile magnetic memory in hybrid quantum spintronic systems.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Over 60% of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients are relying on hemodialysis (HD) to survive, and the arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred vascular access method for HD. However approximately half of all newly created AVF fail to mature and cannot be used without a salvage procedure. We have recently demonstrated an association between AVF maturation failure and post-operative fibrosis, while our RNA-seq study also revealed that veins that ultimately failed during AVF maturation had elevated levels of platelet factor 4 (PF4/CXCL4). However, a link between these two findings was yet to be established. METHODS: In this study, we investigated potential mechanisms between PF4 levels and fibrotic remodeling in veins. We compared the local expression of PF4 and fibrosis marker integrin ß6 (ITGB6) in veins that successfully underwent maturation with that in veins that ultimately failed to mature. We also measured the changes of expression level of α-smooth muscle actin (αSMA/ACTA2) and collagen (Col1/COL1A1) in venous fibroblasts upon various treatments, such as PF4 pharmacological treatment, alteration of PF4 expression, and blocking of PF4 receptors. RESULTS: We found that PF4 is expressed in veins and co-localizes with αSMA. In venous fibroblasts, PF4 stimulates expression of αSMA and Col1 via different pathways. The former requires integrins αvß5 and α5ß1, while chemokine receptor CXCR3 is needed for the latter. Interestingly, we also discovered that the expression of PF4 is associated with that of ITGB6, the ß subunit of integrin αvß6. This integrin is critical for the activation of the major fibrosis factor TGFß, and overexpression of PF4 promotes activation of the TGFß pathway. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that upregulation of PF4 may cause venous fibrosis both directly by stimulating fibroblast differentiation and expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules and indirectly by facilitating the activation of the TGFß pathway.

RESUMEN

Hierarchical assembly of arc-like fractal nanostructures not only has its unique self-similarity feature for stability enhancement but also possesses the structural advantages of highly exposed surface-active sites for activity enhancement, remaining a great challenge for high-performance metallic nanocatalyst design. Herein, we report a facile strategy to synthesize a novel arc-like hierarchical fractal structure of PtPd bimetallic nanoparticles (h-PtPd) by using pyridinium-type ionic liquids as the structure-directing agent. Growth mechanisms of the arc-like nanostructured PtPd nanoparticles have been fully studied, and precise control of the particle sizes and pore sizes has been achieved. Due to the structural features, such as size control by self-similarity growth of subunits, structural stability by nanofusion of subunits, and increased numbers of exposed active atoms by the curved homoepitaxial growth, h-PtPd displays outstanding electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction and excellent stability during hydrothermal treatment and catalytic process.

RESUMEN

A crop rotation system combining agricultural production with phytoremediation is an economical and sustainable method of remediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated farmland. This study focuses on migration and transformation of Cd in rotation systems and the influencing factors. In a two-year field experiment, four rotation systems were evaluated: traditional rice and oilseed rape (TRO), low-Cd rice and oilseed rape (LRO), maize and oilseed rape (MO), and soybean and oilseed rape (SO). Oilseed rape is a remediation plant in rotation systems. Compared to 2020, the grain Cd concentrations of traditional rice, low-Cd rice, and maize in 2021 decreased by 73.8%, 65.7%, and 24.0% (below the safety limits), respectively. However, soybean increased by 71.4%. The LRO system featured the highest oil content of rapeseed (about 50%) and economic output/input ratio (1.34). Removal efficiency of total Cd in soil was 10.03% (TRO) > 8.3% (LRO) > 5.32% (SO) > 3.21% (MO). Crop uptake of Cd was influenced by bioavailability of soil Cd, and soil environmental factors regulated the bioavailable Cd. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that soil nitratenitrogen (NO3--N) had a dominant impact on bioavailable Cd in soil, with variance contributions of 56.7% for paddy-upland (TRO and LRO) and 53.5% for dryland (MO and SO) rotation systems. The difference reflected that ammonium N (NH4+-N) was a secondary factor in paddy-upland rotations, while it was the available phosphorus (P) in dryland rotations, with variance contributions of 10.4% and 24.3%, respectively. The comprehensive evaluation of crop safety, production, economic benefits, and remediation efficiency revealed that the LRO system was efficient and more acceptable to local farmers, providing a new direction for the utilization and remediation of Cd-contaminated farmland.

RESUMEN

Noncollinear antiferromagnets with novel magnetic orders, vanishingly small net magnetization, and exotic spin related properties hold enormous promise for developing next-generation, transformative spintronic applications. A major ongoing research focus of this community is to explore, control, and harness unconventional magnetic phases of this emergent material system to deliver state-of-the-art functionalities for modern microelectronics. Here we report direct imaging of magnetic domains of polycrystalline Mn3Sn films, a prototypical noncollinear antiferromagnet, using nitrogen-vacancy-based single-spin scanning microscopy. Nanoscale evolution of local stray field patterns of Mn3Sn samples are systematically investigated in response to external driving forces, revealing the characteristic "heterogeneous" magnetic switching behaviors in polycrystalline textured Mn3Sn films. Our results contribute to a comprehensive understanding of inhomogeneous magnetic orders of noncollinear antiferromagnets, highlighting the potential of nitrogen-vacancy centers to study microscopic spin properties of a broad range of emergent condensed matter systems.

RESUMEN

Many attempts have been made to enhance the relatively poor electrochemical activity of Ni3S2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by elevating the d-band center. Unfortunately, only limited success has been encountered thus far. Owning to the lower electronegativity and one less 3d electron relative to Ni, Fe shows great potentials in upshifting the overall d-band center of Ni3S2 when incorporating into its crystal structures. Herein, to enhance the intrinsic activity by elevating the d-band center, Ni3S2 nanosheets incorporated with suitable Fe content have been fabricated by a facile one-step solvothermal method. The obtained Fe-incorporated Ni3S2 catalyst exhibits an outstanding OER performance in alkaline media, only requiring 244 mV overpotential (with a reduction of 210 mV compared to Ni3S2) at 50 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH and without obvious degradation after sustaining for a 60 h test at a voltage above 1.5 V. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations consistently demonstrate that the superior performance of Fe-incorporated Ni3S2 is attributed to the upshift of the d-band center on neutralizing the electron densities of Ni, which optimize greatly the adsorption energy of the intermediate (OOH*) in the rate-determining Volmer step.

RESUMEN

A low-cost practical technology is urgently needed to minimize cadmium (Cd) pollution in rice in many parts of the world. In the present study, we elucidated the effects and mechanisms of four alkaline compound materials via field experiments in southern China. The results indicated that these two alkaline Si-rich compound materials (AF-SC, alkaline fertilizer compounded with Si-Ca mineral powder; AF-SS, AF compounded with Si-Se mineral powder) could achieve multi-objective gains by simultaneously reducing grain Cd, increasing yield and improving soil quality at a lower cost. The grain Cd content was decreased by an average of about 75% in two field sites, which even ensured safe grain production in areas with medium Cd pollution. The rice yield was increased by a range of 6.7%-21.0% for different varieties and sites. Moreover, the materials abated soil acidification with the increase of 0.36-0.62 pH units, increased the contents of available P and available Si, subsequently reducing available Cd content in soils. Structural equation model and regression analysis showed that the alkaline environment provided by the alkaline components in compound materials effectively inhibited the formation of Fe/Mn plaques on the root surface, reducing the uptake of Cd from the environment. In addition, the decrease in grain Cd was also attributed to the inhibition of Cd translocation from root to stem, mainly caused by the increase of available Si. These findings reveal that the base application of such alkaline Si-rich compound materials is a viable solution for the remediation of Cd-polluted paddy fields in south China.

RESUMEN

A solvothermal method to prepare PtNi alloys that have differing morphologies is described. By adjusting the feed ratio of Pt and Ni precursors in this process, PtNi alloys with different compositions (Pt : Ni atomic ratio from 1 : 3 to 3 : 1) and morphologies (evolution from nanobranches to nanoparticles) are generated. The prepared Pt48 Ni52 alloy, which has a composite morphology comprised of nanobranches and nanoparticles, exhibits superior activity and durability towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in seawater compared to those of commercial Pt/C catalyst and other PtNi alloys that have different compositions and morphologies. The excellent seawater HER performance of Pt48 Ni52 is ascribed to its nanobranch/nanoparticle morphology that optimally facilitates electron accumulation on Pt, which enhances resistance to chloride corrosion in seawater.
