Objective: Recent reports have demonstrated that a wider pulse pressure upon admission is correlated with heightened in-hospital mortality following spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage (ssICH). However, the underlying mechanism remains ambiguous. We investigated whether a wider pulse pressure was associated with hematoma expansion (HE). Methods: Demographic information, clinical features, and functional outcomes of patients diagnosed with ssICH were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to identify independent predictors of HE. Weighted logistic regression, restricted cubic spline models, and propensity score matching (PSM) were employed to estimate the association between pulse pressure and HE. Results: We included 234 eligible adult ssICH patients aged 60 (51-71) years, and 55.56% were male. The mean pulse pressure was 80.94 ± 23.32 mmHg. Twenty-seven patients (11.54%) developed early HE events, and 116 (49.57%) experienced a poor outcome (modified Rankin scale 3-6). A wider mean pulse pressure as a continuous variable was a predictor of HE [odds ratios (OR) 1.026, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.007-1.046, p = 0.008] in multivariate analysis. We transformed pulse pressure into a dichotomous variable based on its cutoff value. After adjusting for confounding of HE variables, the occurrence of HE in patients with ssICH with wider pulse pressure levels (≥98 mmHg) had 3.78 times (OR 95% CI 1.47-9.68, p = 0.006) compared to those with narrower pulse pressure levels (<98 mmHg). A linear association was observed between pulse pressure and increased HE risk (P for overall = 0.036, P for nonlinear = 0.759). After 1:1 PSM (pulse pressure ≥98 mmHg vs. pulse pressure <98 mmHg), the rates of HE events and poor outcome still had statistically significant in wider-pulse pressure group [HE, 12/51 (23.53%) vs. 4/51 [7.84%], p = 0.029; poor outcome, 34/51 (66.67%) vs. 19/51 (37.25%), p = 0.003]. Conclusion: Widened acute pulse pressure (≥98 mmHg) levels at admission are associated with increased risks of early HE and unfavorable outcomes in patients with ssICH.

Anodes with high capacity and long lifespan play an important role in the advanced batteries. However, none of the existing anodes can meet these two requirements simultaneously. Lithium (Li)-graphite composite anode presents great potential in balancing these two requirements. Herein, the working mechanism of Li-graphite composite anode is comprehensively investigated. The capacity decay features of the composite anode are different from those of Li ion intercalation in Li ion batteries and Li metal deposition in Li metal batteries. An intercalation and conversion hybrid storage mechanism are proposed by analyzing the capacity decay ratios in the composite anode with different initial specific capacities. The capacity decay models can be divided into four stages including Capacity Retention Stage, Relatively Independent Operation Stage, Intercalation & Conversion Coupling Stage, Pure Li Intercalation Stage. When the specific capacity is between 340 and 450 mAh g-1, its capacity decay ratio is between that of pure intercalation and conversion model. These results intensify the comprehensive understandings on the working principles in Li-graphite composite anode and present novel insights in the design of high-capacity and long-lifespan anode materials for the next-generation batteries.

Severe dendrite growth and high-level activity of the lithium metal anode lead to a short life span and poor safety, seriously hindering the practical applications of lithium metal batteries. With a trisalt electrolyte design, an F-/N-containing inorganics-rich solid electrolyte interphase on a lithium anode is constructed, which is electrochemically and thermally stable over long-term cycles and safety abuse conditions. As a result, its Coulombic efficiency can be maintained over 98.98% for 400 cycles. An 85.0% capacity can be retained for coin-type full cells with a 3.14 mAh cm-2 LiNi0.5 Co0.2 Mn0.3 O2 cathode after 200 cycles and 1.0 Ah pouch-type full cells with a 4.0 mAh cm-2 cathode after 72 cycles. During the thermal runaway tests of a cycled 1.0 Ah pouch cell, the onset and triggering temperatures were increased from 70.8 °C and 117.4 °C to 100.6 °C and 153.1 °C, respectively, indicating a greatly enhanced safety performance. This work gives novel insights into electrolyte and interface design, potentially paving the way for high-energy-density, long-life-span, and thermally safe lithium metal batteries.

In this study, the authors provide results of the precisely synchronized triggering of an intense electron beam accelerator (IEBA). The trigger generator was composed of a fractional-turn ratio saturable-pulse transformer and a compact six-stage Marx generator. The main switch of the IEBA was a corona-stabilized triggered switch (CSTS) based on the stabilized corona mechanism. The output voltage of a single IEBA exceeded 500 kV with less than 4 ns of jitter on a 50 Ω dummy load. We also conducted an experiment on the synchronous triggering of two IEBAs by using two independent trigger generators. The synchronization-related jitter was 6.1 ns, while the average time difference was 1.3 ns. We used this to attempt to trigger two parallel IEBAs by using a single trigger generator. The results showed a reduction in the synchronization-related jitter of 31% to 4.2 ns. The designs of the CSTS and the trigger generator guaranteed a precisely synchronous trigger by using a single trigger generator. Thus, the proposed method appears to be promising for accurately and synchronously triggering multiple IEBAs by using a single trigger generator. This provides an effective method to generate pulses with high power.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we build a Young's double-slit experimental platform with adjustable multiparameters by inserting a single slit in a Sagnac interferometer. Our experiment proves that this platform can easily control the parameters related to double slits. In addition, a new, to the best of our knowledge, type of double-slit experiment is performed on the platform. Our approach provides a detailed conceptual and experimental analysis for wave-particle duality and will be useful for research on quantum optics.

Objective: The objective was to explore the impact of WeChat follow-up management on the psychological distress, care burden, and quality of life of parents of infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) receiving in-home care. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study. A total of 101 parents of infants with BPD who were followed up from January 2016 to January 2022 were included in this study. According to different follow-up methods, these patients were classified into the WeChat group and the routine group. The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview (ZBI), and WHOQOL-BREF were used. The data on the psychological distress, care burden, and quality of life of the parents in the two groups were analyzed and compared at discharge and at the 3-month follow-up. Results: There was no significant difference in the DASS-21 and ZBI scores at discharge between the parents in the two groups. During the 3-month follow-up, the scores of the DASS-21 anxiety and stress subscale and the ZBI of parents in the WeChat group were significantly lower than those of parents in the routine group (P < 0.05); however, there was no significant difference in the depression subscale score between the two groups (P > 0.05). A comparison of the WHOQOL-BREF score between the two groups showed that the total quality of life score in the WeChat group was significantly higher than that in the routine group (P < 0.05). The scores of the psychological and social relationship fields in the WeChat group were significantly higher than those in the routine group (P < 0.05). The incidence of adverse events during follow-up was significantly lower in the WeChat group than in the routine group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: WeChat follow-up management is helpful to decrease the anxiety and stress, reduce the care burden, and improve the quality of life of parents of infants with BPD receiving in-home care.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to study the evidence on the efficacy and safety of omitting axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for patients with clinically node-negative but sentinel lymph node (SLN)-positive breast cancer using all the available evidence. METHODS: The Embase, Medline, and Cochrane Library databases were searched through February 25, 2023. Original trials that compared only the sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) with ALND as the control group for patients with clinically node-negative but SLN-positive breast cancer were included. The primary outcomes were axillary recurrence rate, total recurrence rate, disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS). Meta-analyses were performed to compare the odds ratio (OR) in rates and the hazard ratios (HR) in time-to-event outcomes between both interventions. Based on different study designs, tools in the revised Cochrane risk of bias tool were used for randomized trials and the risk of bias in nonrandomized studies of interventions to assess the risk of bias for each included article. Funnel plots and Egger's test were used for the publication's bias assessment. RESULTS: In total, 30 reports from 26 studies were included in the systematic review (9 reports of RCTs, 21 reports of retrospective cohort studies). According to our analysis, omitting ALND in patients with clinically node-negative but SLN-positive breast cancer had a similar axillary recurrence rate (OR = 0.95, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.76-1.20), DFS (HR = 1.02, 95% CI: 0.89-1.16), and OS (HR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.92-1.03), but caused a significantly lower incidence of adverse events and benefited in locoregional recurrence rate (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.59-0.97) compared with ALND. CONCLUSION: For patients with clinically node-negative but SLN-positive breast cancer (no matter the number of the positive SLN), this review showed that SLNB alone had a similar axillary recurrence rate, DFS, and OS, but caused a significantly lower incidence of adverse events and showed a benefit for the locoregional recurrence compared with ALND. An OS benefit was found in the Macro subset that used SLNB alone versus complete ALND. Therefore, omitting ALND is feasible in this setting. TRIAL REGISTRATION: CRD 42023397963.

Sluggish reaction kinetics and severe shuttling effect of lithium polysulfides seriously hinder the development of lithium-sulfur batteries. Heterostructures, due to unique properties, have congenital advantages that are difficult to be achieved by single-component materials in regulating lithium polysulfides by efficient catalysis and strong adsorption to solve the problems of poor reaction kinetics and serious shuttling effect of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this review, the principles of heterostructures expediting lithium polysulfides conversion and anchoring lithium polysulfides are detailedly analyzed, and the application of heterostructures as sulfur host, interlayer, and separator modifier to improve the performance of lithium-sulfur batteries is systematically reviewed. Finally, the problems that need to be solved in the future study and application of heterostructures in lithium-sulfur batteries are prospected. This review will provide a valuable reference for the development of heterostructures in advanced lithium-sulfur batteries.

Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy recessive 1 (LGMDR1), previously known as LGMD2A, is a specific LGMD caused by a gene mutation encoding the calcium-dependent neutral cysteine protease calpain-3 (CAPN3). In our study, the compound heterozygosity with two missense variants c.635 T > C (p.Leu212Pro) and c.2120A > G (p.Asp707Gly) was identified in patients with LGMDR1. However, the pathogenicity of c.635 T > C has not been investigated. To evaluate the effects of this novel likely pathogenic variant to the motor system, the mouse model with c.635 T > C variant was prepared by CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technique. The pathological results revealed that a limited number of inflammatory cells infiltrated the endomyocytes of certain c.635 T > C homozygous mice at 10 months of age. Compared with wild-type mice, motor function was not significantly impaired in Capn3 c. 635 T > C homozygous mice. Western blot and immunofluorescence assays further indicated that the expression levels of the Capn3 protein in muscle tissues of homozygous mice were similar to those of wild-type mice. However, the arrangement and ultrastructural alterations of the mitochondria in the muscular tissues of homozygous mice were confirmed by electron microscopy. Subsequently, muscle regeneration of LGMDR1 was simulated using cardiotoxin (CTX) to induce muscle necrosis and regeneration to trigger the injury modification process. The repair of the homozygous mice was significantly worse than that of the control mice at day 15 and day 21 following treatment, the c.635 T > C variant of Capn3 exhibited a significant effect on muscle regeneration of homozygous mice and induced mitochondrial damage. RNA-sequencing results demonstrated that the expression levels of the mitochondrial-related functional genes were significantly downregulated in the mutant mice. Taken together, the results of the present study strongly suggested that the LGMDR1 mouse model with a novel c.635 T > C variant in the Capn3 gene was significantly dysfunctional in muscle injury repair via impairment of the mitochondrial function.

We demonstrate sub-Rayleigh dark-field imaging via speckle illumination. Imaging is achieved with second-order autocorrelated measurement by illuminating objects with hollow conical pseudothermal light. Our scheme can work well for highly transparent amplitude objects, pure phase objects, and even more complex transparent objects. The autocorrelated dark-field images show better resolution than intensity-averaged images and an ability in filtering out low-frequency noises.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Complex communications between hepatocytes and Kupffer cells (KCs) are known to drive or suppress hepatocarcinogenesis, with controversial data in the literature. In previous experiments that aimed to decipher hepatocyte/KC interactions, we unexpectedly unveiled a tumor-suppressing effect of polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid, a widely used inducer of MX dynamin like GTPase 1 (Mx1)-cre expression, which questioned a theory of interleukin 1a/6 cytokine circuit in hepatocyte/KC communication. The goal of this study was to clarify the controversy and decipher unique functions of KCs and non-KC macrophages in liver tumorigenesis. METHODS: We used the C-type lectin domain family 4 member F (Clec4f)-cre system to delete Src-homology 2 domain-containing tyrosine phosphatase 2 (Shp2)/protein tyrosine phosphatase nonreceptor 11 (Ptpn11) in KCs, and a combination of Clec4f-cre and adeno-associated virus-cre to delete Shp2 in KCs and hepatocytes to investigate the effects on hepatocellular carcinoma development and immune cell compositions/activities. RESULTS: Ablating Shp2 in KCs generated a tumor-promoting niche, which was exacerbated further by concurrent removal of Shp2 in both KCs and hepatocytes. Shp2 deficiency induced KC apoptosis and decreased its numbers, which induced compensatory recruitment of bone marrow-derived monocytes into liver. These newly recruited monocytes differentiated into non-KC macrophages with tumor-associated macrophage function, leading to aggravated tumor progression through down-regulation of CD8 T cells. Tumor-associated macrophage blockade by anti-chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2) antibody inhibited hepatocellular carcinoma progression, while depletion of all macrophages had a tumor-promoting effect by increasing myeloid-derived suppressor cells (M-MDSCs) and decreasing CD8 T cells. CONCLUSIONS: Shp2 loss in KCs or hepatocytes generated a protumorigenic microenvironment, which was exacerbated by its removal in both cell types. These results show the complexity of intercellular signaling events in liver tumorigenesis and raises caution on the use of specific Shp2 inhibitor in liver cancer therapy. Exploring advanced strategies in alleviating the thermal runaway of lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) is critically essential. Herein, a novel electrolyte system with thermoresponsive characteristics is designed to largely enhance the thermal safety of 1.0 Ah LMBs. Specifically, vinyl carbonate (VC) with azodiisobutyronitrile is introduced as a thermoresponsive solvent to boost the thermal stability of both the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and electrolyte. First, abundant poly(VC) is formed in SEI with thermoresponsive electrolyte, which is more thermally stable against lithium hexafluorophosphate compared to the inorganic components widely acquired in routine electrolyte. This increases the critical temperature for thermal safety (the beginning temperature of obvious self-heating) from 71.5 to 137.4 °C. The remained VC solvents can be polymerized into poly(VC) as the battery temperature abnormally increases. The poly(VC) can not only afford as a barrier to prevent the direct contact between electrodes, but also immobilize the free liquid solvents, thereby reducing the exothermic reactions between electrodes and electrolytes. Consequently, the internal-short-circuit temperature and "ignition point" temperature (the starting temperature of thermal runaway) of LMBs are largely increased from 126.3 and 100.3 °C to 176.5 and 203.6 °C. This work provides novel insights for pursuing thermally stable LMBs with the addition of various thermoresponsive solvents in commercial electrolytes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: SH2 domain-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase 2 (Shp2) is the first identified pro-oncogenic tyrosine phosphatase that acts downstream of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) to promote Ras-extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling. However, this phosphatase was also shown to be antitumorigenic in HCC. This study is aimed at deciphering paradoxical Shp2 functions and mechanisms in hepatocarcinogenesis and at exploring its value as a pharmaceutical target in HCC therapy. APPROACHES AND RESULTS: We took both genetic and pharmaceutical approaches to examine the effects of Shp2 inhibition on primary liver cancers driven by various oncogenes and on metastasized liver tumors. We show here that the catalytic activity of Shp2 was essential for relay of oncogenic signals from RTKs in HCC and that chemical inhibition of Shp2 robustly suppressed HCC driven by RTKs. However, in contrast to a tumor-promoting hepatic niche generated by genetically deleting Shp2 in hepatocytes, treatment with a specific Shp2 inhibitor had a tumor-suppressing effect on metastasized liver tumor progression. Mechanistically, the Shp2 inhibitor enhanced antitumor innate immunity by down-regulating inflammatory cytokines, suppressing the chemokine (C-C motif) receptor 5 signaling axis, but up-regulating interferon-ß secretion. CONCLUSIONS: These results unveil complex mechanisms for the tumor-suppressing effect of pharmaceutical Shp2 inhibition in the liver immune environment. We provide a proof of principle for clinical trials with specific Shp2 inhibitors in patients with primary and metastasized liver cancer.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most lethal cancers, primarily due to its late diagnosis, high propensity to metastasis, and the development of resistance to chemo-/radiotherapy. Accumulating evidence suggests that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are intimately involved in the treatment resistance of pancreatic cancer cells via interacting with critical signaling pathways and may serve as potential diagnostic/prognostic markers or therapeutic targets in PDAC. DATA SOURCES: We carried out a systematic review on lncRNAs-based research in the context of pancreatic cancer and presented an overview of the updated information regarding the molecular mechanisms underlying lncRNAs-modulated pancreatic cancer progression and drug resistance, together with their potential value in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of PDAC. Literature mining was performed in PubMed with the following keywords: long non-coding RNA, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, pancreatic cancer up to January 2022. Publications relevant to the roles of lncRNAs in diagnosis, prognosis, drug resistance, and therapy of PDAC were collected and systematically reviewed. RESULTS: LncRNAs, such as HOTAIR, HOTTIP, and PVT1, play essential roles in regulating pancreatic cancer cell proliferation, invasion, migration, and drug resistance, thus may serve as potential diagnostic/prognostic markers or therapeutic targets in PDAC. They participate in tumorigenesis mainly by targeting miRNAs, interacting with signaling molecules, and involving in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition process. CONCLUSIONS: The functional lncRNAs play essential roles in pancreatic cancer cell proliferation, invasion, migration, and drug resistance and have potential values in diagnosis, prognostic prediction, and treatment of PDAC.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) has become one of the most common infectious diseases in China. Before 2016, the primary causal serotypes were enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16). Following the introduction of EV-A71 vaccines in China since 2016, the situation could change. CV-A6 has recently replaced EV-A71 and CV-A16 in some areas of China. However, the epidemiological characteristics of central China remain unknown. AIM: To investigate the clinical symptoms and pathogen spectrum of HFMD in Shiyan City, central China, in recent years. METHODS: The epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory data from HFMD cases reported to the Shiyan Center for Disease Control and Prevention between January 2016 and December 2020 were analyzed. 196 throat swab specimens were collected from hospitalized HFMD patients between January 2018 and December 2020. To detect and genotype enteroviruses, real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of the 5'-untranslated region were used. In Shiyan, 168 laboratory-confirmed HFMD cases were studied using a logistic regression model to determine the effect of predominant enterovirus serotypes. Based on the logistic regression model, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator model was used to analyze the correlation between CV-A6 infection and various clinical characteristics in HFMD patients in Shiyan. RESULTS: From 2016 to 2020, 35840 HFMD cases were reported in Shiyan. The number of cases decreased by 48.4% from 2016 to 2017. Approximately 1.58-fold increases were found in 2018 and 2019 when compared to the previous year, respectively. In 2020, a decrease of about 85.5% was reported when compared to 2019. The most common serotypes shifted from EV-A71 and CV-A16 (about 60%-80% in 2016 and 2018) to others (more than 80.0% in 2017, 2019, and 2020). EV-A71 lost its dominance in 2017 in Shiyan. Among 196 confirmed HFMD cases, 85.7% tested positive for enterovirus, with CV-A6 being the most common serotype (121/168, 72.0%). The positive rates for CV-A16 and CV-A10 were 4.8% and 3.0%, respectively. There was no EV-A71 discovered. Infection with CV-A6 was linked to fever, myocardial damage, increased creatine kinase MB isoenzyme, and lactate dehydrogenase levels. CONCLUSION: CV-A6 was the most common enterovirus serotype in Shiyan City, replacing EV-A71 and CV-A16 as the HFMD pathogen. Developing vaccines against CV-A6 or multiple pathogens, as well as rising CV-A6 surveillance, will help prevent HFMD in central China.

Serious safety risks caused by the high reactivity of lithium metal against electrolytes severely hamper the practicability of lithium metal batteries. By introducing unique polymerization site and more fluoride substitution, we built an in situ formed polymer-rich solid electrolyte interphase upon lithium anode to improve battery safety. The fluorine-rich and hydrogen-free polymer exhibits high thermal stability, which effectively reduces the continuous exothermic reaction between electrolyte and anode/cathode. As a result, the critical temperature for thermal safety of 1.0 Ah lithium-LiNi0.5 Co0.2 Mn0.3 O2 pouch cell can be increased from 143.2 °C to 174.2 °C. The more dangerous "ignition" point of lithium metal batteries, the starting temperature of battery thermal runaway, has been dramatically raised from 240.0 °C to 338.0 °C. This work affords novel strategies upon electrolyte design, aiming to pave the way for high-energy-density and thermally safe lithium metal batteries.

In this paper, an all-solid-state high voltage trigger generator is developed, which is aimed at triggering a several gigawatts three-electrode spark gap of an intense electron beam accelerator (IEBA). As one of the most important parts for triggering the IEBA precisely, it is developed based on a fractional-turn ratio saturable pulse transformer and a compact six-stage Marx generator. A pulse of rising time 141 ns and amplitude 79.6 kV is obtained on the 1000 Ω dummy load. The trigger is operated at pulsed repetition frequency over 10 Hz for testing its operational stability. The jitter counted from the initial control signal to the falling edge of the pulse is 0.64 ns. In addition, experiments of three-minute continuous repetitive operations at 10 Hz and higher frequency are carried out. The results show that the trigger generator has high stability even in long-time operations. So far, it successfully applies to the main switch of IEBA with a breakdown voltage of over 500 kV, and a total system jitter of 6.7 ns is acquired.

The potential threat of global warming in the 21st century is on the ecosystem through many aspects, including the negative impact of rising global temperature on the health of humans and animals, especially domestic animals. The damage caused by heat stress to animals has been more and more significant as the worldwide climate continues to rise, along with the breeding industry's expanding scale and stocking density, and it has become the most important stress-causing factor in southern China. In this review, we described the effects of heat stress on animal immune organs and immune system. The much-debated topic is how hyperthermia affects the tight junction barrier. Heat stress also induces inflammation in the body of animals causing low body weight and loss of appetite. This review also discussed that heat stress leads to hepatic disorder, and it also damages the intestine. The small intestine experiences ischemia, and the permeability of the intestine increases. Furthermore, the oxidative stress and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways have a significant role in stress-induced cellular and organ injury. The study has shown that MAPK activity in the small intestine was increased by heat stress. Heat stress caused extreme small intestine damage, enhanced oxidative stress, and activated MAPK signaling pathways.

Low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs) are a promising next-generation fuel cell due to their low cost and rapid start-up, posing a significant challenge to electrode materials with high electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we reported the bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon nanotubes (NiFe@CNTs) prepared by carefully controlling catalytic pyrolysis of waste plastics. Results showed that plenty of multi-walled CNTs with outer diameters (14.38 ± 3.84 nm) were observed due to the smallest crystalline size of Ni-Fe alloy nanoparticles. SOFCs with such NiFe@CNTs blended in anode exhibited remarkable performances, reaching a maximum power density of 885 mW cm-2 at 500°C. This could be attributed to the well-dispersed alloy nanoparticles and high graphitization degree of NiFe@CNTs to improve HOR activity. Our strategy could upcycle waste plastics to produce nanocomposites and demonstrate a high-performance LT-SOFCs system, addressing the challenges of sustainable waste management and guaranteeing global energy safety simultaneously.
