BACKGROUND: Percutaneous renal cyst sclerotherapy (PRCS) as a treatment for renal cysts is usually performed with a high concentration of ethanol (≥ 90%). This study reviewed cases in which a lower concentration of ethanol (83%) was used for the procedure in dogs. METHODS: Records of cases of renal cysts treated by sclerotherapy using 83% ethanol in dogs were reviewed. Outcomes of the treatment were evaluated by comparing volumes of renal cysts before the procedure and the volumes after treatment, using ultrasound images with the volume reduction rates classified as follows: < 50% of initial volume (failed); ≥ 50% but < 80% of initial volume (partial success); ≥ 80% but < 95% of initial volume (great success); ≥ 95% of initial volume (complete success). RESULTS: Out of nine dog kidneys, renal cysts sclerotherapy with 83% ethanol achieved partial success in one kidney, great success in four, and complete success in the other four. No side effect was observed. The mean of the volume-reduction rates was 90.00 ± 11.00 while the minimum and maximum reduction rates were 65% and 100%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The lower ethanol concentration (83%) is good for disinfecting kidneys in PRCS.

Functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube blended cellulose acetate (fCNT-CA) membranes were synthesized for forward osmosis (FO) through phase inversion. The membranes were characterized through SEM, FTIR, and water contact angle measurement. AFM was utilized to investigate alginate fouling mechanism on the membrane. It reveals that the fCNT contributes to advance alginate fouling resistance in FO (57% less normalized water flux decline for 1% fCNT-CA membrane was observed than that for bare CA membrane), due to enhanced electrostatic repulsion between the membrane and the alginate foulant. Furthermore, it was found that the fCNT-CA membranes became more hydrophilic due to carboxylic groups in functionalized carbon nanotube, resulting in approximately 50% higher water-permeated flux than bare CA membrane. This study presents not only the fabrication of fCNT-CA membrane and its application to FO, but also the quantification of the beneficial role of fCNT with respect to alginate fouling in FO.

We analyzed the distribution of phylogenetic groups of foodborne Escherichia coli isolates. We also investigated the prevalence of virulence-associated genes of diarrheagenic E. coli. In total, 162 E. coli isolated from foods (raw meat, fish, and processed foods) were collected in Korea. Approximately 90% of the foodborne isolates belonged to phylogenetic groups A and B1, whereas 1.2% were allocated to group B2, and 9.3% to D. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays were used to detect the following: stx (1) and stx (2) to identify Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), eae and bfpA to identify enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), ipaH for enteroinvasive E. coli, CVD432 for enteroaggregative E. coli, and lt and st for enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC). The presence of daaD in diffusely adherent E. coli was examined by singleplex PCR. Of the 162 foodborne E. coli isolates, three (1.9%) were confirmed to be pathogenic E. coli: STEC, ETEC, and atypical EPEC based on their possession of stx (1), st, and eae, and the pathogenic strains were isolated in beef, rockfish, and pork, respectively. Molecular typing was conducted by multilocus sequence typing to investigate the genetic relationships among the pathogenic strains. All isolates positive for virulence genes had different mulilocus sequence typing profiles representing different sequence types (ST) of ST101, ST1815, and ST1820. These results indicate that some food samples were contaminated with pathogenic E. coli.
