RESUMEN

Terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy (TES) has emerged as a highly effective and versatile technique for investigating the photoelectric properties of diverse materials and nonlinear physical processes in the past few decades. Concurrently, research on two-dimensional (2D) materials has experienced substantial growth due to their atomically thin structures, exceptional mechanical and optoelectronic properties, and the potential for applications in flexible electronics, sensing, and nanoelectronics. Specifically, these materials offer advantages such as tunable bandgap, high carrier mobility, wideband optical absorption, and relatively short carrier lifetime. By applying TES to investigate the 2D materials, their interfaces and heterostructures, rich information about the interplay among photons, charges, phonons and spins can be unfolded, which provides fundamental understanding for future applications. Thus it is timely to review the nonlinear processes underlying THz emission in 2D materials including optical rectification, photon-drag, high-order harmonic generation and spin-to-charge conversion, showcasing the rich diversity of the TES employed to unravel the complex nature of these materials. Typical applications based on THz emissions, such as THz lasers, ultrafast imaging and biosensors, are also discussed. Step further, we analyzed the unique advantages of spintronic terahertz emitters and the future technological advancements in the development of new THz generation mechanisms leading to advanced THz sources characterized by wide bandwidth, high power and integration, suitable for industrial and commercial applications. The continuous advancement and integration of TES with the study of 2D materials and heterostructures promise to revolutionize research in different areas, including basic materials physics, novel optoelectronic devices, and chips for post-Moore's era.

The BOOST (Booster promotion for older outpatients using SMS text reminders) program at Taipei Veterans General Hospital assessed the effectiveness of text message reminders in enhancing COVID-19 booster vaccination rates among the elderly, guided by the Health Belief Model (HBM). Targeting patients aged 65 and above, eligible yet unvaccinated for a COVID-19 booster, this cohort study sent personalized reminders a week prior to their scheduled appointments between April 18, 2022, and May 12, 2022, acting as cues to action to enhance vaccination uptake by overcoming perceived barriers and raising awareness of benefits. Over 5 weeks, the study observed a 38% increase in vaccination rate among 3,500 eligible patients, markedly surpassing the concurrent national rate increase of 4% for the same demographic. The majority of vaccinations occurred within two weeks after the reminder, illustrating the effectiveness of the strategy. Cox regression analysis identified age and time since last vaccination as significant predictors of responsiveness, with those aged 65-74 and 75-84 showing higher uptake, particularly when reminders were sent within 4 months after the last dose. A single reminder proved to be effective. The findings of this study demonstrate the potential of SMS reminders to promote COVID-19 vaccination among the elderly through the strategic use of HBM principles, suggesting a feasible and effective approach to public health communication.

BACKGROUND: Mental diseases continue to rank among the top 10 leading causes of global burden. Psychiatric research is a crucial avenue through which mental healthcare can be enhanced. Taiwanese academics have constantly concentrated their efforts on psychiatric research and published their findings. A systematic examination of these papers will provide an assessment of the present state and contribute to the formulation of future policies for psychiatric research in Taiwan. We assessed psychiatric papers from Taiwan using the Web of Science (WoS) database. METHODS: Academic papers in the Psychiatry category of the WoS database from Taiwan were retrieved and evaluated. The analysis included papers published in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Indexed journals between 1970 and 2023, excluding meeting abstracts and corrections. RESULTS: Of the 1,049,281 papers published globally in the psychiatry category of the WoS system between 1970 and 2023, 6,117 (0.58%) were published in Taiwan. Taiwan ranked twenty-sixth globally in terms of number of papers published. These publications have received 150,519 citations. Over the past 53 years, both the annual number of psychiatric papers from Taiwan and their citations received have significantly and rapidly increased. However, the average impact factor of publications remained constant over time. CONCLUSION: Over the last five decades, the number of psychiatric publications from Taiwan has increased. However, the average impact factor of these published papers did not increase over time. Investing in advanced research infrastructure and interdisciplinary projects may improve the quality and relevance of Taiwanese psychiatric research publications, potentially increasing their global citations and impact.

Introduction: There is evidence that aging and obesity are associated with increased oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) may be superior to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) in anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity benefits. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine which HIIT prescriptions will be more effective in reducing fat accumulation, inflammation, and improving metabolic adaptation and exercise performance in middle-aged and older overweight adults. Methods: Thirty-six middle-aged with overweight adults were divided into one of three groups: 1. L-HIIT group: the long-interval HIIT group (4 × 4 min Exercise/4 min Rest), 2. M-HIIT group: the medium-interval HIIT group (8 × 2 min Exercise/2 min Rest), 3. Control group: no exercise training intervention. All groups underwent the training stage for eight weeks (three sessions per week), followed by a detraining stage of four weeks in order to investigate the effects induced by different HIIT interventions on inflammation, metabolic adaptation, anti-fatigue and exercise performance, and fat loss Results: There was a significant physiological response in the change rate of heart rate (HR) after an acute L-HIIT session compared with an acute M-HIIT session (ΔHR: ↑49.66±16.09% vs ↑33.22±14.37%, p=0.02); furthermore, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) decreased significantly following a single L-HIIT session. After an eight-week training stage, the L-HIIT and M-HIIT groups exhibited a significant increase in aerobic capacity (ΔVO2peak), with values of +27.93±16.79% (p<0.001) and +18.39±8.12% (p<0.001), respectively, in comparison to the control group. Furthermore, in the L-HIIT group, the anaerobic power of relative mean power (RMP) exhibited a significant increase (p=0.019). However, following a four-week detraining stage, the adiponectin concentration remained 1.78 times higher in the L-HIIT group than in the control group (p=0.033). The results of blood sugar, blood lipids, body composition, and inflammatory markers did not indicate any improved it did not indicate any improvements from the two different HIIT protocols. Conclusions: The results indicate that an eight-week L-HIIT or M-HIIT intervention (three sessions per week, 32 minutes per session) may be an effective approach for improving aerobic capacity. It can be posited that L-HIIT may be a more advantageous mode than M-HIIT for enhancing anaerobic power, adipokine levels, and improving blood pressure in an aged and overweight population due to the induced physiological responses.

Hierarchical polymer structures have garnered widespread application across various fields owing to their distinct surface properties and expansive surface areas. Conventional hierarchical polymer structures, however, often lack postfabrication scalability and spatial selectivity. In this study, we propose a novel strategy to prepare light-assisted hierarchical polymer structures using azopolymers (PAzo), the breath figure method, and anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Initially, the breath figure PAzo films are prepared by dripping a PAzo chloroform solution onto glass substrates in a high-humidity environment. The AAO templates are then placed on the breath figure PAzo film. Upon ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, the azobenzene groups in the azopolymers undergo trans-cis photoisomerization. This process causes the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PAzo to become lower than room temperature, allowing the azopolymer to enter the nanopores of the AAO templates. The hierarchical azopolymer structures are then formed by using a sodium hydroxide solution to remove the templates. Furthermore, exploring the effects of PAzo concentration and UV light exposure duration on the film morphology reveals optimized conditions for hierarchical structure formation. Additionally, the water contact angles of these polymer structures are measured. The hierarchical PAzo structures exhibit higher hydrophobicity compared with the flat PAzo films and the PAzo breath figure films. Finally, patterned breath figure films can be prepared using designed photomasks, demonstrating the method's capability for spatial selectivity.

OBJECTIVE: This population-based study explored emergency room visits (ERVs) from all-causes, circulatory and respiratory diseases among different occupational groups in Taiwan associated with ambient average temperature. METHOD: Daily area-age-sex specific ERVs records were obtained from the Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare from 2009 to 2018. Distributed lag-nonlinear model (DLNM) was used to estimate the exposure-response relationships between daily average temperature and ERVs for all-causes, circulatory and respiratory diseases by occupational groups. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to pool the overall cumulative relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: The exposure-response curves showed ERVs of all-cause and respiratory diseases increased with rising temperature across all occupational groups. These effects were consistently stronger among younger (20-64 years old) and outdoor workers. In contrast, ERVs risk from circulatory diseases increased significantly during cold snaps, with a substantially higher risk for female workers. Interestingly, female workers, regardless of indoor or outdoor work, consistently showed a higher risk of respiratory ERVs during hot weather compared to males. Younger workers (20-64 years old) exhibited a higher risk of ERVs, likely due to job profiles with greater exposure to extreme temperatures. Notably, the highest risk of all-causes ERVs was observed in outdoor male laborers (union members), followed by farmers and private employees, with the lowest risk among indoor workers. Conversely, female indoor workers and female farmers faced the highest risk of respiratory ERVs. Again, female farmers with consistent outdoor exposure had the highest risk of circulatory ERVs during cold conditions. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlighted the complexity of temperature-related health risks associated with different occupational contexts. The population-level insights into vulnerable occupational groups could provide valuable comprehension for policymakers and healthcare practitioners.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diabetes is one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease (CVD). As high as 29 % of patients with diabetes develop atherosclerosis. Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells (VSMCs) are a key mediator in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, generating pro-inflammatory and proliferative characteristics in atherosclerotic lesions. METHODS: We used human atherosclerotic samples, developed diabetes-induced atherosclerotic mice, and generated loss of function and gain of function in Klotho human aortic smooth muscle cells to investigate the function of Klotho in atherosclerosis. RESULTS: We found that Klotho expression is decreased in smooth muscle actin-positive cells in patients with diabetes and atherosclerosis. Consistent with human data, we found that Apoe knockout mice with streptozotocin-induced diabetes fed on a high-fat diet showed decreased expression of Klotho in SMCs. Additionally, these mice showed increased expression of TGF-ß, MMP9, phosphorylation of ERK and Akt. Further, we utilized primary Human Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells (HASMCs) with d-glucose under dose-response and in time-dependent conditions to study the role of Klotho in these cells. Klotho gain of function and loss of function studies showed that Klotho inversely regulated the expression of atherosclerotic markers TGF-ß, MMP2, MMP9, and Fractalkine. Further, High Glucose (HG) induced Akt, and ERK1/2 phosphorylation were enhanced or mitigated by endogenous Klotho deficiency or its overexpression respectively. PI3K/Akt and MAPK/ERK inhibition partially abolished the HG-induced upregulation of TGF-ß, MMP2, MMP9, and Fractalkine. Additionally, Klotho knockdown increased the proliferation of HASMCs and enhanced α-SMA and TGF-ß expression. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these results indicate that local vascular Klotho is involved in diabetes-induced atherosclerosis, which is via PI3K/Akt and ERK1/2-dependent signaling pathways.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate differences in cervical lymph node image quality on dual-energy computed tomography (CT) scan with datasets reconstructed using filter back projection (FBP), hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR), and deep learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR) in patients with head and neck cancer. Method: Seventy patients with head and neck cancer underwent follow-up contrast-enhanced dual-energy CT examinations. All datasets were reconstructed using FBP, hybrid IR with 30 % adaptive statistical IR (ASiR-V), and DLIR with three selectable levels (low, medium, and high) at 2.5- and 0.625-mm slice thicknesses. Herein, signal, image noise, signal-to-noise ratio, and contrast-to-noise ratio of lymph nodes and overall image quality, artifact, and noise of selected regions of interest were evaluated by two radiologists. Next, cervical lymph node sharpness was evaluated using full width at half maximum. Results: DLIR exhibited significantly reduced noise, ranging from 3.8 % to 35.9 % with improved signal-to-noise ratio (11.5-105.6 %) and contrast-to-noise ratio (10.5-107.5 %) compared with FBP and ASiR-V, for cervical lymph nodes (p < 0.001). Further, 0.625-mm-thick images reconstructed using DLIR-medium and DLIR-high had a lower noise than 2.5-mm-thick images reconstructed using FBP and ASiR-V. The lymph node margins and vessels on DLIR-medium and DLIR-high were sharper than those on FBP and ASiR-V (p < 0.05). Both readers agreed that DLIR had a better image quality than the conventional reconstruction algorithms. Conclusion: DLIR-medium and -high provided superior cervical lymph node image quality in head and neck CT. Improved image quality affords thin-slice DLIR images for dose-reduction protocols in the future.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of acupuncture and moxibustion on postoperative complications and adverse events (AEs) of chemotherapy in patients with gastric cancer (GC) has been investigated. Through a meta-analysis of existing randomized controlled trials (RCTs), this study sought to strengthen the evidentiary basis to help investigators further understand the effects of moxibustion and acupuncture on postoperative complications and AEs of chemotherapy among GC patients. METHODS: Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, and VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals were searched to collect RCTs on effects of acupuncture and moxibustion on gastrointestinal function and AEs among GC patients undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. Outcome measures included postoperative gastrointestinal recovery (bowel sound recovery time, time to first flatus/defecation/feeding), the incidence of AEs (nausea and vomiting, abdominal distension, and diarrhea), myelosuppression (white blood cells, hemoglobin, and platelet), and immune function indicators (CD3+ and CD4+). To assess quality, the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool was utilized. Review Manager 5.4 was implemented to do the meta-analysis. RESULTS: Fifteen eligible RCTs involved 1259 patients. Meta-analysis results showed that the experimental group had a significantly shorter bowel sound recovery time (MD = - 14.57, 95% CI = [- 18.97, - 10.18], P < 0.00001), time to first flatus (MD = - 17.56, 95% CI = [- 22.23, - 12.88], P < 0.00001), time to first defecation (MD = - 17.05, 95% CI = [- 21.02, - 13.09], P < 0.00001), and time to first feeding (MD = - 23.49, 95% CI = [- 28.81, - 18.17], P < 0.00001) than the control group. There were significant decreases in the incidence of nausea and vomiting (RR = 0.46, 95% CI = [0.21, 1.02], P = 0.05) and abdominal distension (RR = 0.45, 95% CI = [0.27, 0.75], P = 0.002) observed in the experimental group in comparison with the control group. The experimental group demonstrated a significant increase in white blood cell counts in comparison with to the control group (MD = 0.89, 95% CI = [0.23, 1.55], P = 0.008). The experimental group showed significantly higher levels of CD3+ (MD = 7.30, 95% CI = [1.86, 12.74], P = 0.009) and CD4+ (MD = 2.75, 95% CI = [1.61, 3.90], P < 0.00001) than the control group. CONCLUSION: Among GC patients, acupuncture and moxibustion can aid in gastrointestinal function recovery, reduce the incidence of AEs of surgery and chemotherapy, and improve immune function.

In this study, we investigated the concentration of airborne influenza virus in daycare centers and influencing factors, such as common cold prevalence, air pollutants, and meteorological factors. A total of 209 air samples were collected from daycare centers in Kaohsiung and the influenza virus was analyzed using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Air pollutants and metrological factors were measured using real-time monitoring equipment. Winter had the highest positive rates of airborne influenza virus and the highest prevalence of the common cold, followed by summer and autumn. The concentration of CO was significantly positively correlated with airborne influenza virus. Daycare center A, with natural ventilation and air condition systems, had a higher concentration of airborne influenza A virus, airborne fungi, and airborne bacteria, as well as a higher prevalence of the common cold, than daycare center B, with a mechanical ventilation system and air purifiers, while the concentrations of CO2, CO, and UFPs in daycare center A were lower than those in daycare center B. We successfully detected airborne influenza virus in daycare centers, demonstrating that aerosol sampling for influenza can provide novel epidemiological insights and inform the management of influenza in daycare centers.

Ten-eleven translocation 1 (TET1) is a methylcytosine dioxygenase involved in active DNA demethylation. In our previous study, we demonstrated that TET1 reprogrammed the ovarian cancer epigenome, increased stem properties, and activated various regulatory networks, including metabolic networks. However, the role of TET1 in cancer metabolism remains poorly understood. Herein, we uncovered a demethylated metabolic gene network, especially oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Contrary to the concept of the Warburg effect in cancer cells, TET1 increased energy production mainly using OXPHOS rather than using glycolysis. Notably, TET1 increased the mitochondrial mass and DNA copy number. TET1 also activated mitochondrial biogenesis genes and adenosine triphosphate production. However, the reactive oxygen species levels were surprisingly decreased. In addition, TET1 increased the basal and maximal respiratory capacities. In an analysis of tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolites, TET1 increased the levels of α-ketoglutarate, which is a coenzyme of TET1 dioxygenase and may provide a positive feedback loop to modify the epigenomic landscape. TET1 also increased the mitochondrial complex I activity. Moreover, the mitochondrial complex I inhibitor, which had synergistic effects with the casein kinase 2 inhibitor, affected ovarian cancer growth. Altogether, TET1-reprogrammed ovarian cancer stem cells shifted the energy source to OXPHOS, which suggested that metabolic intervention might be a novel strategy for ovarian cancer treatment.

INTRODUCTION: As patients nowadays tend to have multiple diseases and complex medical histories, our aim was to identify high-quality, non-instrumental dysphagia screening tools used for the detection of adult dysphagia cases in all disease categories in acute-care settings. METHOD: A literature search was conducted in five databases from each database's earliest inception to 31 July 2021 and guided by five keywords: 'dysphagia', 'deglutition', 'screening', 'test' and 'measure'. Without limiting the search in any specific disease category, reviewers assessed original studies and identified tools if they had been validated against instrumental evaluations and if they had been designed as a pass-fail procedure to screen whether dysphagia is absent or present. We further excluded any tool if it was (1) for pediatric focus, or (2) a patient self-report questionnaire. All final tool candidates underwent a methodological quality appraisal using the Revised Tool for the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2). RESULT: Out of 195 studies with 165 tools identified, 20 tool candidates underwent QUADAS-2 review. We found six high-quality, non-instrumental screening tools for detecting adult dysphagia cases in acute-care settings, including the Yale Swallow Protocol, Gugging Swallowing Screen, Toronto Bedside Swallowing Screening Test (both English and Portuguese versions), Sapienza Global Bedside Evaluation of Swallowing and Two-Step Thickened Water Test. These high-quality tools were developed primarily for patients with stroke. Only Yale Swallow Protocol was originally tested for heterogeneous populations with stroke, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, oesophageal surgery, neurosurgery and head-and-neck cancer. CONCLUSIONS: The results highlight the gap in the unavailability of high-quality dysphagia screening tool in several emerged high-risk populations including elderly inpatients, or patients following endotracheal extubation. Further research is needed to determine whether these six tools can be effectively applied across different high-risk populations in acute-care settings to screen for cases finding.

This work presents a hydrothermal method followed by a sonochemical treatment for synthesizing tantalum decorated on iron selenide (Ta/FeSe2) integrated with nitrogen-doped graphene (NGR) as a susceptible electrode material for detecting trolox (TRX) in berries samples. The surface morphology, structural characterizations, and electrochemical performances of the synthesized Ta/FeSe2/NGR composite were analyzed via spectrophotometric and voltammetry techniques. The GCE modified with Ta/FeSe2/NGR demonstrated an impressive linear range of 0.1 to 580.3 µM for TRX detection. Additionally, it achieved a remarkable limit of detection (LOD) of 0.059 µM, and it shows a high sensitivity of 2.266 µA µÐœ-1 cm-2. Here, we used density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the structures of TRX and TRX quinone and the locations of energy levels and electron transfer sites. The developed sensor exhibits significant selectivity, satisfactory cyclic and storage stability, and notable reproducibility. Moreover, the practicality of TRX was assessed in different types of berries, yielding satisfactory recoveries.

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical presentation, treatment preference, and relevant complications of infantile hepatic hemangioma (IHH) in propranolol era. METHODS: The National Taiwan University Hospital integrated Medical Database (NTUH-iMD) was used to enroll twenty-one cases of IHH diagnosed from 2006 to 2020. Medical charts were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: In nine patients (42.9%), IHH was found incidentally, and in seven patients (33%), it was detected during postnatal self-paid ultrasonography. Focal disease was determined in 17 patients, multifocal disease in 1 patient, and diffuse disease in 3 patients. Patients with diffuse disease had a lower hemoglobulin level than patients with focal IHH (9.38 vs. 12.6 mg/dL, p = 0.045). Two patients had Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon (KMP), one had hypothyroidism, and one had both. All patients with KMP had focal hepatic hemangiomas. Among the 17 patients with focal IHH, nine were prescribed propranolol, one was treated by surgical resection of the tumor, and the others had expectant management. All patients with multifocal and diffuse IHH were administered propranolol. One infant (7.7%) treated with propranolol had bradycardia initially but it subsided after dose adjustment. CONCLUSIONS: Most IHH is found incidentally or detected during postnatal ultrasonography screening. Patients with large focal lesions should also be screened for associated complications. Propranolol is the drug of choice and a safe therapeutic option for IHH, especially for focal tumors >5 cm as well as multifocal and diffuse lesions.

Human Cep57 is a coiled-coil scaffold at the pericentriolar matrix (PCM), controlling centriole duplication and centrosome maturation for faithful cell division. Genetic truncation mutations of Cep57 are associated with the mosaic-variegated aneuploidy (MVA) syndrome. During interphase, Cep57 forms a complex with Cep63 and Cep152, serving as regulators for centrosome maturation. However, the molecular interplay of Cep57 with these essential scaffolding proteins remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that Cep57 undergoes liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) driven by three critical domains (NTD, CTD, and polybasic LMN). In vitro Cep57 condensates catalyze microtubule nucleation via the LMN motif-mediated tubulin concentration. In cells, the LMN motif is required for centrosomal microtubule aster formation. Moreover, Cep63 restricts Cep57 assembly, expansion, and microtubule polymerization activity. Overexpression of competitive constructs for multivalent interactions, including an MVA mutation, leads to excessive centrosome duplication. In Cep57-depleted cells, self-assembly mutants failed to rescue centriole disengagement and PCM disorganization. Thus, Cep57's multivalent interactions are pivotal for maintaining the accurate structural and functional integrity of human centrosomes.

Understanding the nucleation and growth mechanism of 3d transition bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) is crucial to developing NCs with tailored nanostructures and properties. However, it remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of 3d bimetallic NCs formation and their sensitivity to oxygen. Here, by combining in situ electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray techniques, we elucidate the nucleation and growth pathways of Fe-Ni NCs. Interestingly, the formation of Fe-Ni NCs emerges from the assimilation of Fe into Ni clusters together with the reduction of Fe-Ni oxides. Subsequently, these NCs undergo solid-state phase transitions, resulting in two distinct solid solutions, ultimately dominated by γ-Fe3Ni2. Furthermore, we deconvolve the interplays between local coordination and electronic state concerning the growth temperature. We directly visualize the oxidation-state distributions of Fe and Ni at the nanoscale and investigate their changes. This work may reshape and enhance the understanding of nucleation and growth in atomic crystallization.

BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a unique diagnostic tool that assesses the functional capacity of the heart, lungs, and peripheral oxidative system in an integrated manner. However, the clinical utility of CPET for evaluating interstitial lung disease (ILD) remains uncertain. The objective of this study was to determine the predictive value of CPET for mortality in subjects with ILD. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled subjects with ILD who underwent CPET at a tertiary medical center in Taiwan and followed up their survival status for 12 months. Mortality prediction was based on comparing CPET parameters between subjects who survived and those who died. We further analyzed CPET parameters that showed significant differences using receiver operating characteristic curves to identify their optimal cutoff values. RESULTS: A total of 106 newly diagnosed subjects with ILD underwent CPET, and the 1-y mortality rate was 7.5%. Six CPET variables were found to be significant predictors of mortality: peak oxygen consumption, oxygen pulse, end-tidal partial pressure of carbon dioxide, heart rate recovery 1 min after CPET, minute ventilation to carbon dioxide output slope, and functional aerobic impairment. We calculated a summed score by adding the number of CPET variables that exceeded their cutoff values. Subjects with a summed score of 6 had a 1-y survival rate of only 25%, whereas subjects with scores of 0-5 had a survival rate of 98%. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the summed score represents a useful tool for screening patients with ILD who can undergo a CPET to determine their prognosis.

Objective: Screening and predicting potential targets for gastrodin antioxidant stress based on network pharmacology methods, and exploring the effect of gastrodin on lead acetate induced oxidative stress in PC12 cells through cell experiments. Methods: Through the Pharmaper database Predict the target of action of gastrodin. Through OMIM and GeneCards to collect oxidative stress targets from database, and intersect with drug targets to obtain drug disease intersection targets; Construct a PPI network diagram using the STRING database. Perform GO enrichment analysis and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis on intersection targets through the DAVID platform. Lead acetate (PbAc) exposure was used to establish a lead poisoning cell model, and intracellular ROS levels, ALB, AKT1, and Caspase-3 levels were measured. Results: A total of 288 targets of gastrodin action, 638 targets related to oxidative stress, and 62 drug disease intersection targets were obtained, among which core targets such as ALB, AKT1, CASP3 may be closely related to oxidative stress. KEGG pathway analysis showed that gastrodin antioxidant stress mainly involved in lipid, cancer pathway and other signaling pathways. The results of the cell experiment showed that 50 µM is the optimal effective concentration for PbAc induced ROS production in PC12 cells. Gastrodin significantly increased the ROS content of PC12 cells treated with PbAc, Upregulation of ALB expression and downregulation of AKT1 and CASP3 expression. Conclusions: Gastrodin may alleviate PbAc-induced ROS in PC12 cells, indicating potential protective effects against oxidative stress. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings and explore the underlying mechanisms.

Infection with drug-resistant bacteria poses a significant threat to human health. Judicious use of antibiotics could reduce the likelihood of bacterial resistance, which can be evaluated through antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST). This paper focuses on the application of a needle-like nanocapillary tip filled with chitosan (CS)/polyethylene pyrrolidone (PVP) hydrogel based on its specific pH-sensitive properties. The gel-filled nanocapillary has the potential to be used for electrical pH detection with a sensitivity of 3.06 nA/pH and a linear range from 7.3 to 4.3. Such sensitivity for pH measurement could be extended for monitoring of bacterial (such as Escherichia coli and Streptococcus salivarius) growth because of the relationship between pH and bacterial growth. Bacterial growth curves obtained using the hydrogel-filled nanocapillary showed good agreement with the OD600 method. Moreover, this device could be applied for rapid AST for tetracycline and norfloxacin on E. coli with minimum inhibitory concentrations of 2 and 0.125 µg/mL, respectively. This study expands the application of the hydrogel-based nanocapillary for bacterial research by monitoring changes in pH values.

Introduction: This study aims to evaluate the qualifications and identify skill enhancement areas for epidemiological investigators in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCs) in Guizhou's, informing future training and policy initiatives to strengthen public health responses. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in August 2022, and an online, self-designed questionnaire on the Epidemiological Dynamic Data Collection platform was administered to evaluate the professional staff in CDCs. The responses were scored and presented using descriptive statistical methods, and the factors influencing the total score were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and linear regression. Results and discussion: A total of 1321 questionnaires were collected, yielding an average score of 14.86±3.49 and a qualification rate of 29.9%. The scoring rate of ability of individual protection and coordination in epidemic control was high (87.25%). Meanwhile, improvements in further training were needed in areas such as data analysis ability (23.67%), knowledge of site disinfection (40.40%), and epidemiological investigation skills (42.50%). No significant difference was observed between the scores of city and county CDCs, (t = 1.071, p =0.284). The effects of gender and age could be disregarded, and the experience in epidemiological work and training (including investigation on COVID-19 cases and contacts), educational background, and professional title partially explained the survey outcome (R Square of the linear regression model was 0.351). The survey indicated the need for additional well-trained epidemiologic investigators in Guizhou. Specified training was effective in improving epidemiologic investigation, and enhancement in data analysis ability and knowledge of field disinfection are recommended in professional staff cultivation.
