RESUMEN

Renewable electricity driven electrosynthesis of cyclohexanone oxime (C6H11NO) from cyclohexanone (C6H10O) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) is a promising alternative to traditional environment-unfriendly industrial technologies for green synthesis of C6H11NO. Precisely controlling the reaction pathway of the C6H10O/NOx-involved electrochemical reductive coupling reaction is crucial for selectively producing C6H11NO, which is yet still challenging. Herein, we report a porous high-entropy alloy PdCuAgBiIn metallene (HEA-PdCuAgBiInene) to boost the electrosynthesis of C6H11NO from C6H10O and nitrite, achieving a high Faradaic efficiency (47.6%) and almost 100% yield under ambient conditions. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations demonstrate that unconventional orbital hybridization between d-block metals and p-block metals could regulate the local electronic structure of active sites and induce electron localization of electron-rich Pd sites, which tunes the active hydrogen supply and facilitates the generation and enrichment of key intermediates NH2OH* and C6H10O*, and efficiently promotes their C-N coupling to selectively produce C6H11NO.

RESUMEN

Electrochemical upcycling of nitrate and polyester plastic into valuable products is an ideal solution to realize the resource utilization. Here, the co-production of ammonia (NH3) and glycolic acid (GA) via electrochemical upcycling of nitrate and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics over mesoporous Pd3Au film on Ni foam (mPd3Au/NF), which is synthesized by micelle-assisted replacement method, is proposed. The mPd3Au/NF with well-developed mesoporous structure provides abundant active sites and facilitated transfer channels and strong electronic effect. As such, the mPd3Au/NF exhibits high Faraday efficiencies of 97.28% and 95.32% at 0.9 V for the formation of NH3 and GA, respectively. Theoretical results indicate that the synergistic effect of Pd and Au can optimize adsorption energy of key intermediates *NOH and *OCH2-CH2OH on active sites and increase bond energy of C─C band, thereby improving the activity and selectivity for the formation of NH3 and GA. This work proposes a promising strategy for the simultaneous conversation of nitrate and PET plastic into high-value NH3 and GA.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: With remarkable progress in the field of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) prophylaxis, it is critical to understand population immunity against RSV. We aim to describe the RSV pre-F IgG antibodies across all age groups in Southern China and to evaluate the risk factors associated with lower antibody levels. METHODS: We performed a community-based cross-sectional sero-epidemiological study in Anhua County, Hunan Province, Southern China, from July 15, 2021, to November 5, 2021. Serum samples were tested for IgG antibodies against the RSV prefusion F (pre-F) protein using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We estimated the geometric mean titres (GMTs) and seropositivity rates across all age groups. The generalized linear models were built to identify factors associated with antibody levels. RESULTS: A total of 890 participants aged 4 months to older than 89 years were enrolled. The lowest RSV pre-F IgG GMTs were observed in infants and toddlers aged 4 months to younger than 2 years (3.0; 95% CI, 2.6-3.5). With increasing age, the RSV pre-F IgG GMT increased to 4.3 (95% CI, 4.1-4.4) between the ages of 2 and younger than 5 years and then stabilized at high levels throughout life. All the children had serological evidence of RSV infection by the age of 5 years. Age was associated with RSV pre-F antibody levels in children, with an estimated 1.8-fold (95% CI, 1.1-2.9) increase in titre per year before 5 years of age, although it was not significantly associated with antibody levels in adults aged older than 60 years. DISCUSSION: Our findings could provide a comprehensive understanding of the gaps in RSV immunity at the population level and inform the prioritization of immunization platforms.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: With rapid urbanization, massive migration, and non-family-based eldercare involvement, Chinese concepts of eldercare responsibility and filial piety are shifting. We performed age-period-cohort (APC) analyses to assess the transition of old-age pension coverage, eldercare responsibility, and filial piety concepts and its urban-rural differences among Chinese adults using data from the China General Social Survey (2006-2017). METHODS: Old-age pension coverage (yes/no) and primary eldercare responsibility (government/offspring/self/sharing) were investigated in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2017. Filial piety was evaluated using customized questionnaires in 2006 and 2017. The APC effects were estimated using mixed effects and generalized additive models. RESULTS: Among 66,182 eligible participants (mean age: 48.8 years, females: 51.7%) in the six waves, APC analyses indicated that old-age pension coverage increased with aging and over time. Across cohort groups, it grew as the cohort was younger in urban residents but decreased in rural residents. The concept of offspring-based (> 50%) and government/self/offspring-shared eldercare (> 30%) predominated. APC analyses revealed that the offspring-based concept declined with aging (OR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.79-0.84), whereas the government-based (OR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.33-1.41) and self-based (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.47-1.63) concepts increased with aging. People born around the 1940s have a comparatively higher possibility to perceive that the primary eldercare responsibility should be undertaken by the government and elder parents. In contrast, people born in the younger cohort were more likely to perceive that adult children are responsible for their parents' primary eldercare. Filial piety score slightly increased with aging (ß = 0.18, SD: 0.05) but decreased as the birth cohort was younger. In addition, rural participants were more likely to perceive offspring-based eldercare and maintain filial piety, and the related urban-rural difference was intensified by aging. CONCLUSIONS: The traditional concept that eldercare solely relies on offspring has changed to relying on multiple entities, including the government and self-reliance. Diluted filial piety in people born in the young cohort requires reinforcement. Moreover, future healthy aging policies need to focus more on urban-rural disparities to promote equity in social well-being.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Human contact patterns are a key determinant driving the spread of respiratory infectious diseases. However, the relationship between contact patterns and seasonality as well as their possible association with the seasonality of respiratory diseases is yet to be clarified. METHODS: We investigated the association between temperature and human contact patterns using data collected through a cross-sectional diary-based contact survey in Shanghai, China, between December 24, 2017, and May 30, 2018. We then developed a compartmental model of influenza transmission informed by the derived seasonal trends in the number of contacts and validated it against A(H1N1)pdm09 influenza data collected in Shanghai during the same period. RESULTS: We identified a significant inverse relationship between the number of contacts and the seasonal temperature trend defined as a spline interpolation of temperature data (p = 0.003). We estimated an average of 16.4 (95% PrI: 15.1-17.5) contacts per day in December 2017 that increased to an average of 17.6 contacts (95% PrI: 16.5-19.3) in January 2018 and then declined to an average of 10.3 (95% PrI: 9.4-10.8) in May 2018. Estimates of influenza incidence obtained by the compartmental model comply with the observed epidemiological data. The reproduction number was estimated to increase from 1.24 (95% CI: 1.21-1.27) in December to a peak of 1.34 (95% CI: 1.31-1.37) in January. The estimated median infection attack rate at the end of the season was 27.4% (95% CI: 23.7-30.5%). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support a relationship between temperature and contact patterns, which can contribute to deepen the understanding of the relationship between social interactions and the epidemiology of respiratory infectious diseases.

RESUMEN

Measles remains a major threat to human health despite widespread vaccination. While we know that maternal antibodies can impair vaccine-induced immunity, the relative contributions of pre-existing immunity levels, maternal and infant characteristics on vaccine responses remain unclear, hampering evidence-based vaccination policy development. Here we combine serological data from 1,505 individuals (aged 0-12 years) in a mother-infant cohort and in a child cohort with empirical models to reconstruct antibody trajectories from birth. We show that while highly heterogeneous across a population, measles antibody evolution is strongly predictive from birth at the individual level, including following vaccination. Further, we find that caesarean section births were linked with 2.56 (95% confidence interval: 1.06-6.37) increased odds of primary vaccine failure, highlighting the long-term immunological consequences of birth route. Finally, we use our new understanding of antibody evolution to critically assess the population-level consequences of different vaccination schedules, the results of which will allow country-level evaluations of vaccine policy.

RESUMEN

Glycerol oxidation-assisted water electrolysis has emerged as a cost-effective way of co-producing green hydrogen and HCOOH. Still, preparing highly selective and stable nickel-based metal electrocatalysts remains a challenge. Herein, heterostructure Ni3N/WO3 nanosheet arrays of bifunctional catalysts with large specific surface areas loaded on nickel foam (denoted as Ni3N/WO3/NF) were synthesized. This catalyst was for glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with excellent catalytic performance, a voltage saving of 267 mV compared to oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and a HER overpotential of 104 mV at 100 mA cm-2. The cell voltage in the assembled GOR//HER hybrid electrolysis system reaches 100 mA cm-2 at 1.50 V, 296 mV lower than the potential required for overall water splitting. This work demonstrates that replacing GOR with OER using a cost-effective and highly active Ni-based bifunctional electrocatalyst can make hybrid water electrolysis an energy-efficient, sustainable, and green strategy for hydrogen production.

RESUMEN

Background: Shanghai experienced a significant surge in Omicron BA.2 infections from March to June 2022. In addition to the standard interventions in place at that time, additional interventions were implemented in response to the outbreak. However, the impact of these interventions on BA.2 transmission remains unclear. Methods: We systematically collected data on the daily number of newly reported infections during this wave and utilized a Bayesian approach to estimate the daily effective reproduction number. Data on public health responses were retrieved from the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker and served as a proxy for the interventions implemented during this outbreak. Using a log-linear regression model, we assessed the impact of these interventions on the reproduction number. Furthermore, we developed a mathematical model of BA.2 transmission. By combining the estimated effect of the interventions from the regression model and the transmission model, we estimated the number of infections and deaths averted by the implemented interventions. Results: We found a negative association (-0.0069, 95% CI: 0.0096 to -0.0045) between the level of interventions and the number of infections. If interventions did not ramp up during the outbreak, we estimated that the number of infections and deaths would have increased by 22.6% (95% CI: 22.4-22.8%), leading to a total of 768,576 (95% CI: 768,021-769,107) infections and 722 (95% CI: 722-723) deaths. If no interventions were deployed during the outbreak, we estimated that the number of infections and deaths would have increased by 46.0% (95% CI: 45.8-46.2%), leading to a total of 915,099 (95% CI: 914,639-915,518) infections and 860 (95% CI: 860-861) deaths. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the interventions adopted during the Omicron BA.2 outbreak in spring 2022 in Shanghai were effective in reducing SARS-CoV-2 transmission and disease burden. Our findings emphasize the importance of non-pharmacological interventions in controlling quick surges of cases during epidemic outbreaks.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The 2022-2023 mpox (monkeypox) outbreak has spread rapidly across multiple countries in the non-endemic region, mainly among men who have sex with men (MSM). In this study, we aimed to evaluate mpox's importation risk, border screening effectiveness and the risk of local outbreak in Chinese mainland. METHODS: We estimated the risk of mpox importation in Chinese mainland from April 14 to September 11, 2022 using the number of reported mpox cases during this multi-country outbreak from Global.health and the international air-travel data from Official Aviation Guide. We constructed a probabilistic model to simulate the effectiveness of a border screening scenario during the mpox outbreak and a hypothetical scenario with less stringent quarantine requirement. And we further evaluated the mpox outbreak potential given that undetected mpox infections were introduced into men who have sex with men, considering different transmissibility, population immunity and population activity. RESULTS: We found that the reduced international air-travel volume and stringent border entry policy decreased about 94% and 69% mpox importations respectively. Under the quarantine policy, 15-19% of imported infections would remain undetected. Once a case of mpox is introduced into active MSM population with almost no population immunity, the risk of triggering local transmission is estimated at 42%, and would rise to > 95% with over six cases. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that the reduced international air-travel volume and stringent border entry policy during the COVID-19 pandemic reduced mpox importations prominently. However, the risk could be substantially higher with the recovery of air-travel volume to pre-pandemic level. Mpox could emerge as a public health threat for Chinese mainland given its large MSM community.

RESUMEN

Replacing the slow oxygen evolution reaction with favorable hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) is a green and efficient way to produce hydrogen. In this work, we synthesize amorphous/crystalline RhFeP metallene via phase engineering and heteroatom doping. RhFeP metallene has good catalytic activity and stability for HER and HzOR, and only an ultralow voltage of 18 mV is required to achieve 10 mA cm-2in a two-electrode hydrazine-assisted water splitting system. The superior result is mainly ascribed to the co-doping of Fe and P and the formation of amorphous/crystalline RhFeP metallene with abundant phase boundaries, thereby adjusting electronic structure and increasing active sites.

RESUMEN

Electrochemical conversion of nitrogen into ammonia at ambient conditions as a sustainable approach has gained significant attention, but it is still extremely challenging to simultaneously obtain a high faradaic efficiency (FE) and NH3 yield. In this work, the interstitial boron-doped porous Pd nanotubes (B-Pd PNTs) are constructed by combining the self-template reduction method with boron doping. Benefiting from distinctive one-dimensional porous nanotube architectonics and the incorporation of the interstitial B atoms, the resulting B-Pd PNTs exhibit high NH3 yield (18.36 µg h-1 mgcat.-1) and FE (21.95%) in neutral conditions, outperforming the Pd/PdO PNTs (10.4 µg h-1 mgcat.-1 and 8.47%). The present study provides an attractive method to enhance the efficiency of the electroreduction of nitrogen into ammonia by incorporating interstitial boron into porous Pd-based catalysts.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is an infectious disease with high morbidity and mortality rates among children under 5 years old. This study aimed to explore the health-related quality of life (HRQOL), economic burden, and related influencing factors among Chinese HFMD patients. METHODS: From January to October 2019, a longitudinal cohort study of 296 hospitalized patients (≤ 5 years old) with HFMD and their guardians was conducted using the proxy version of the 5-level EQ-5D-Y (EQ-5D-Y-5L, Y-5L) in face-to-face interviews in Shanghai, Zhengzhou, and Kunming, representing three regions with different economic development levels. Multiple linear regression was used to explore the factors associated with HRQOL and costs. RESULTS: The mean Y-5L health utility score (HUS) (standard deviation, SD), and visual analogue scale (VAS) score (SD) were 0.730 (0.140) and 60.33 (16.52) at admission and increased to 0.920 (0.120) and 89.95 (11.88) at discharge, respectively. The children from Shanghai had the lowest HUSs at admission and had the best health improvement. The mean hospitalization cost and total cost were 4037 CNY and 5157 CNY, respectively. The children from Shanghai had the highest hospitalization cost (4559 CNY) and total cost (5491 CNY). Multiple regression analysis suggested that medical insurance status, type of employment, residence type, and religious status were significantly associated with the baseline HUS and improvement in the HUS after treatment. Region, loss of work time, and length of stay had a significant impact on the hospitalization cost and total cost. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate that HFMD could lead to poor HRQOL and the economic burden varies in different regions in China. Many pediatric patients still have physical or mental health problems shortly after treatment.

RESUMEN

Background: China has experienced a COVID-19 wave caused by Omicron XBB variant starting in April 2023. Our aim is to conduct a retrospective analysis exploring the dynamics of the outbreak under counterfactual scenarios that combine the use of vaccines, antiviral drugs, and nonpharmaceutical interventions. Methods: We developed a mathematical model of XBB transmission in China, which has been calibrated using SARS-CoV-2 positive rates per week. Intrinsic age-specific infection-hospitalization risk, infection-ICU risk, and infection-fatality risk were used to estimate disease burdens, characterized as number of hospital admissions, ICU admissions, and deaths. Results: We estimated that in absence of behavioral change, the XBB outbreak in spring 2023 would have resulted in 0.86 billion infections (∼61% of the total population). Our counterfactual analysis shows that the synergetic effect of vaccination (70% vaccination coverage), antiviral treatment (20% receiving antiviral treatment), and moderate nonpharmaceutical interventions (20% isolation and L1 PHSMs) could reduce the number of deaths to levels close to seasonal influenza (1.17 vs. 0.65 per 10,000 individuals and 5.85 vs. 3.85 per 10,000 individuals aged 60+, respectively). The maximum peak prevalence of hospital and ICU admissions are estimated to be lower than the corresponding capacities (8.6 vs. 10.4 per 10,000 individuals and 1.2 vs. 2.1 per 10,000 individuals, respectively). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the capacity of the Chinese healthcare system was adequate to face the Omicron XBB wave in spring 2023 but, at the same time, supports the importance of administering highly effective vaccine with long-lasting immune response, and the use of antiviral treatments.

RESUMEN

Upgrading overall water splitting (OWS) system and developing high-performance electrocatalysts is an attractive way to the improve efficiency and reduce the consumption of hydrogen (H2 ) production from electrolyzed water. Here, a Pt cluster/Ir metallene heterojunction structure (Pt/Ir hetero-metallene) with a unique Pt/Ir interface is reported for the conversion of ethylene glycol (EG) to glycolic acid (GA) coupled with H2 production. With the assistance of ethylene glycol oxidation (EGOR), the Pt/Ir||Pt/Ir hetero-metallene two-electrode water electrolysis system exhibits a lower cell voltage of 0.36 V at 10 mA cm-2 . Furthermore, the Faradaic efficiency of EG to GA is as high as 87%. The excellent performance of this new heterostructure arise from the charge redistribution and strain effects induced by Pt-Ir interactions between the heterogeneous interfaces, as well as the larger specific surface area and more active sites due to the metallene structure.

RESUMEN

A facile one-step solvothermal method was developed to synthesize Ir-doped Co-based metal-organic framework (CoIr-MOF) nanoarrays as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for water-glucose co-electrolysis. It was demonstrated that in situ incorporation of a low-content of Ir cations could modulate the electronic structure of Co active centers and thus boost the electrocatalytic performance towards both the hydrogen evolution reaction and glucose-to-formate oxidation reaction.

RESUMEN

Genomic data hold increasing potential in the elucidation of transmission dynamics and geographical sources of infectious disease outbreaks. Phylogeographic methods that use epidemiological and genomic data obtained from surveillance enable us to infer the history of spatial transmission that is naturally embedded in the topology of phylogenetic trees as a record of the dispersal of infectious agents between geographical locations. In this Review, we provide an overview of phylogeographic approaches widely used for reconstructing the geographical sources of outbreaks of interest. These approaches can be classified into ancestral trait or state reconstruction and structured population models, with structured population models including popular structured coalescent and birth-death models. We also describe the major challenges associated with sequencing technologies, surveillance strategies, data sharing, and analysis frameworks that became apparent during the generation of large-scale genomic data in recent years, extending beyond inference approaches. Finally, we highlight the role of genomic data in geographical source inference and clarify how this enhances understanding and molecular investigations of outbreak sources.

RESUMEN

The induction of immunogenic ferroptosis in cancer cell is limited by the complex and delicate antioxidant system in the organism. Synergistic induction of oxidative damage and inhibition of the defensive redox system in tumor cells is critical to promote lethal accumulation of lipid peroxides and activate immunogenic death (ICD). To address this challenge, we present a multifunctional and dual-responsive layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheet to enhance immunogenic ferroptosis. The MTX-LDH@MnO2 nanoplatform is constructed by intercalating methotrexate (MTX) into LDH interlayers and electrostatically absorbing biomineralized ovalbumin (OVA)-MnO2 onto the LDH surface. Specifically, the released Mn2+ from the incorporated MnO2 triggers a Fenton-like reaction, leading to reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, while the depletion of reduced glutathione (GSH) further intensifies oxidative stress, resulting in the induction of ferroptosis. MTX is released in response to the acidic environment of tumor cells and inhibits the regeneration of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), modulating the GTP cyclic hydrolase 1 (GCH1)/BH4 axis. MTX disrupts the antioxidant metabolic activity regulated by GCH1/BH4 axis and inhibits ROS consumption, further boosting the ferroptosis effect, which promoted the release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and triggered ICD in the tumor. This activation subsequently leads to significant antitumor immune reactions, including DCs maturation, infiltration of CD4+/CD8+ T cells and cytokines release. The redox-controllable nanoplatform demonstrates promising anticancer efficacy in a mouse breast model providing a novel strategy for cancer immunotherapy.

RESUMEN

The development of effective and stable cathode electrocatalysts is highly desired for fuel cells. Controlling the composition and morphology of Pd-based materials can provide a great opportunity to improve their oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance. Here, we report the synthesis of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) Pd2B nanosheet assemblies (Pd2B NAs) via the boronation reaction between as-synthesized Pd NAs and N,N-dimethylformamide. The hcp Pd2B NAs with uniform pore distribution can provide sufficient active sites for ORRs. The insertion of B atoms can induce the phase transition from face-centered cubic structure to hcp structure, as the most thermodynamically stable phase in the Pd-B alloy, which is beneficial for enhancing the ORR stability and toxicity resistance. Therefore, the hcp Pd2B NAs exhibit superior mass activity, specific activity and excellent stability for ORR. The present strategy of boron-intercalation-triggered crystalline transition of Pd-based nanomaterials is valuable for the design of metal-nonmetal catalysts with enhanced performance.

RESUMEN

Following the approval of Cervarix for the immunization of girls and women in China against high-risk human papillomavirus types 16 and 18, a non-interventional post-authorization safety study was performed. A multi-center prospective cohort study assessed safety following Cervarix vaccination of Chinese girls and women aged 9-45 years between 31 May 2018 and 3 December 2020. Adverse events following immunization (AEFIs), potential immune-mediated diseases (pIMDs), and pregnancy-related outcomes were collected up to 12 months from the third immunization or 24 months from the first immunization, whichever came first. Among 3,013 women who received 8,839 Cervarix doses, 167 (5.5%) reported ≥ 1 any AEFI, and 22 (0.7%) reported 40 serious AEFIs. During the 30 days after each dose, 147 women (4.9%) reported 211 medically attended AEFIs, including 3 serious AEFIs reported by 1 woman (0.03%). One woman reported a pIMD. Cervarix was inadvertently administered to 65 women (2.2%) within 60 days before conception or during pregnancy. Of these women, 34 (52.3%) gave birth to live infant(s) with no apparent congenital anomalies, and 1 (1.5%) woman gave birth to a live infant with a congenital anomaly. No serious AEFIs or pIMDs were considered to be related to the vaccination. In Chinese women aged 9-45 years, immunization with the Cervarix three-dose schedule was well tolerated. Overall, no safety concerns were identified, although rare adverse events may have been missed due to the study sample size.Clinical trial registration: NCT03438006.

A new kind of electrocatalyst consisting of yttrium-doped Co(OH)F (Y-Co(OH)F) nanowires was synthesized by one hydrothermal method for nitrate electroreduction to ammonia. It was demonstrated that the rare earth element Y, as an oxophilic metal, can be approximated as Lewis acid sites enhancing nitrate adsorption on the catalyst surface. Therefore, the Y-Co(OH)F exhibits excellent nitrate reduction performance, reaching an optimal ammonia production rate of 0.2149 mmol h-1 cm-2 and ammonia faradaic efficiency of 91.81%.
