RESUMEN

Aqueous rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (ARLIBs) are extensively researched due to their inherent safety, typical affordability, and potential high energy density. However, fabricating ARLIBs with both high energy density and power performance remains challenging. Herein, based on cyanoethyl-modified bacterial cellulose nanofibers (CBCNs), a multifunctional fast ion transport framework is developed to construct the flexible free-standing ARLIBs with high areal loading and excellent rate performance. Benefiting from the unique merits of CBCNs, such as ultra-high aspect ratio, excellent toughness, superior adhesion, good lithiophilicity and ideal stability, the flexible free-standing and highly robust electrodes are fabricated and exhibit a long-term stable cycling of 1200 cycles with a high specific capacity of 117 mAh∙g-1 at 15 C. Remarkably, the corresponding full cell with the free-standing high mass loading (45.5 mg∙cm-2) electrodes under the condition of ultra-low addition of battery binder demonstrates a cycle lifespan of over 1000 cycles with a specific capacity of 120 mAh∙g-1 and a capacity decay as low as 0.03% per cycle, which is far superior to those of almost all previous reports. This work provides a strategy for constructing ARLIBs with high energy density and power performance by introducing a unique fast ion transport nanofiber framework.

Simultaneously improving the activity and stability of catalysts for anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) remains a notable challenge. Here, we report a chromium-doped ruthenium dioxide with oxygen vacancies, termed Cr0.2Ru0.8O2-x, that drives OER with an overpotential of 170 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and operates stably over 2000 h in acidic media. Experimental and theoretical studies show that the synergy of Cr dopant and oxygen vacancy induces an unconventional dopant-mediated hydroxyl spillover mechanism. Such dynamic hydroxyl spillover from Cr dopant to Ru active site changes the rate-determining step from OOH* formation to O2 formation and thus greatly improves the OER performance. Moreover, the Cr dopant and oxygen vacancy also play a crucial role in stabilizing surface Ru and lattice oxygen in the Ru-O-Cr structural motif. When assembled into the anode of a practical PEMWE device, Cr0.2Ru0.8O2-x enables long-term durability of over 200 h at an ampere-level current density and 60 degrees centigrade.

Interparticle pore space and vugs are two different scales of pore space in vuggy porous media. Vuggy porous media widely exists in carbonate reservoirs, and the permeability of this porous media plays an important role in many engineering fields. It has been shown that the change of effective stress has important effects on the permeability of vuggy porous media. In this work, a fractal permeability model for vuggy porous media is developed based on the fractal theory and elastic mechanics. Besides, a Monte Carlo simulation is also implemented to obtain feasible values of permeability. The proposed model can predict the elastic deformation of the fractal vuggy porous media under loading stress, which plays a crucial role in the variations of permeability. The predicted permeability data based on the present fractal model are compared with experimental data, which verifies the validity of the present fractal permeability model for vuggy porous media. The parameter sensitivity analysis indicates that the permeability of stress-sensitivity vuggy porous media is related to the capillary fractal dimension, capillary fractal tortuosity dimension, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio.

In the field of automatic optical inspection (AOI), this study presents innovative strategies to enhance object detection accuracy while minimizing dependence on large annotated datasets. We initially developed a defect detection model using a dataset of 3579 images across 32 categories, created in collaboration with a major Taiwanese panel manufacturer. This model was evaluated using 12,000 ambiguously labeled images, with improvements achieved through data augmentation and annotation refinement. To address the challenges of limited labeled data, we proposed the Adaptive Fused Semi-Supervised Self-Learning (AFSL) method. This approach, designed for anchor-based object detection models, leverages a small set of labeled data alongside a larger pool of unlabeled data to enable continuous model optimization. Key components of AFSL include the Bounding Box Assigner, Adaptive Training Scheduler, and Data Allocator, which together facilitate dynamic threshold adjustments and balanced training, significantly enhancing the model's performance on AOI datasets. The AFSL method improved the mean average precision (mAP) from 43.5% to 57.1% on the COCO dataset and by 2.6% on the AOI dataset, demonstrating its effectiveness in achieving high levels of precision and efficiency in AOI with minimal labeled data.

Aim: Although lactate supplementation at the reperfusion stage of ischemic stroke has been shown to offer neuroprotection, whether the role of accumulated lactate at the ischemia phase is neuroprotection or not remains largely unknown. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate the roles and mechanisms of accumulated brain lactate at the ischemia stage in regulating brain injury of ischemic stroke. Methods and Results: Pharmacological inhibition of lactate production by either inhibiting LDHA or glycolysis markedly attenuated the mouse brain injury of ischemic stroke. In contrast, additional lactate supplement further aggravates brain injury, which may be closely related to the induction of neuronal death and A1 astrocytes. The contributing roles of increased lactate at the ischemic stage may be related to the promotive formation of protein lysine lactylation (Kla), while the post-treatment of lactate at the reperfusion stage did not influence the brain protein Kla levels with neuroprotection. Increased protein Kla levels were found mainly in neurons by the HPLC-MS/MS analysis and immunofluorescent staining. Then, pharmacological inhibition of lactate production or blocking the lactate shuttle to neurons showed markedly decreased protein Kla levels in the ischemic brains. Additionally, Ldha specific knockout in astrocytes (Aldh1l1 CreERT2; Ldha fl/fl mice, cKO) mice with MCAO were constructed and the results showed that the protein Kla level was decreased accompanied by a decrease in the volume of cerebral infarction in cKO mice compared to the control groups. Furthermore, blocking the protein Kla formation by inhibiting the writer p300 with its antagonist A-485 significantly alleviates neuronal death and glial activation of cerebral ischemia with a reduction in the protein Kla level, resulting in extending reperfusion window and improving functional recovery for ischemic stroke. Conclusion: Collectively, increased brain lactate derived from astrocytes aggravates ischemic brain injury by promoting the protein Kla formation, suggesting that inhibiting lactate production or the formation of protein Kla at the ischemia stage presents new therapeutic targets for the treatment of ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Patients with myocardial infarction (MI) can have disturbed sleep, but little is known about the efficacy of light therapy on sleep and prognosis of patients with MI. We conducted a randomized controlled study to investigate its efficacy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This preliminary study included 34 patients with MI. They were randomized into the blue light and the white light groups during their stay in intensive care unit. 17 age and gender matched healthy controls were also enrolled. Actigraphy was used to evaluate objective sleep since enrollment. Delirium scales were used to screen delirium. Lab work-up including vitamin D level was performed at the baseline and discharge. We used Mann-Whitney U test or Wilcoxon signed-rank test to compare the difference between the MI group and the healthy control group, and the group difference after receiving light therapy. RESULTS: Patients with MI had significantly lower vitamin D level than healthy controls (p<0.001). They also had significantly poorer sleep, as indicated by actigraphy parameters including sleep onset latency (p=0.01), sleep efficiency (p=0.002), wake after sleep onset (p<0.001) and awake times (p=0.002). No significant group difference was found by actigraphy after light therapy except a non-significant higher relative amplitude of the blue light group (p=0.061). Besides, vitamin D level of the blue light group increased significantly (p1=0.047, p2=0.045). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with MI had poorer sleep, highlighting the needs to develop interventions. Significantly increased vitamin D level and a non-significant better rest-active rhythm after light therapy suggest its potential with sleep and prognosis which warrants further investigation.

PURPOSE: Determine whether intravitreal injection of bevacizumab (IVB) exerts long-term effects on neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) when reaching the age of 8 years. METHODS: We enrolled 277 children. Patients were stratified into the groups full-term, preterm without ROP, ROP without treatment, or ROP with treatment, based on gestational age (GA) and ROP status. Children under GA of 37 weeks were considered premature. Patients' cognitive outcomes were evaluated using Full-Scale Intelligence Quotient (FIQ) (full score and percentile) generated by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) every 1 to 2 years. RESULTS: At the mean age of 7.8 years, ROP without and with treatment groups demonstrated lower FIQ scores and percentiles, compared with full-term and premature groups (both p<0.05). FIQ scores and percentiles didn't significantly differ between patients who received different treatments for ROP (full score p=0.19; percentile p=0.37). After adjusting for GA, LogMAR best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was negatively associated with FIQ scores (p=0.0008) and percentiles (p=0.0002). CONCLUSIONS: At the mean age of 8 years, patients with ROP undergoing IVB didn't exhibit worse cognitive outcomes than those who underwent laser photocoagulation or both treatments. GA and BCVA correlated with cognitive development in children.

Mechanochromic light control technology that can dynamically regulate solar irradiation is recognized as one of the leading candidates for energy-saving windows. However, the lack of spectrally selective modulation ability still hinders its application for different scenarios or individual needs. Here, inspired by the generation of structure color and color change of living organisms, a simple layer-by-layer assembly approach toward large-area fabricating mechanically responsive film for visible and near-infrared multiwavelength spectral modulation smart windows is reported here. The assembled SiO2 nanoparticles and W18O49 nanowires enable the film with an optical modulation rate of up to 42.4% at the wavelength of 550 nm and 18.4% for the near-infrared region, separately, and the typical composite film under 50% stretching shows ≈41.6% modulation rate at the wavelength of 550 nm with NIR modulation rate less than 2.7%. More importantly, the introduction of the multilayer assembly structure not only optimizes the film's optical modulation but also enables the film with high stability during 100 000 stretching cycles. A cooling effect of 21.3 and 6.9 °C for the blackbody and air inside a model house in the real environmental application is achieved. This approach provides theoretical and technical support for the new mechanochromic energy-saving windows.

By engineering chemically identical but structurally distinct materials into intricate and sophisticated polytypic nanostructures, which often surpass their pure phase objects and even produce novel physical and chemical properties, exciting applications in the fields of photovoltaics, electronics and photocatalysis can be achieved. In recent decades, various methods have been developed for synthesizing a library of polytypic nanocrystals encompassing IV, III-V and II-VI polytypic semiconductors. The exceptional performances of polytypic metal chalcogenide nanocrystals have been observed, making them highly promising candidates for applications in photonics and electronics. However, achieving high-precision control over the morphology, composition, crystal structure, size, homojunctions, and periodicity of polytypic metal chalcogenide nanostructures remains a significant synthetic challenge. This review article offers a comprehensive overview of recent progress in the synthesis and control of polytypic metal chalcogenide nanocrystals using colloidal synthetic strategies. Starting from a concise introduction on the crystal structures of metal chalcogenides, the subsequent discussion delves into the colloidal synthesis of polytypic metal chalcogenide nanocrystals, followed by an in-depth exploration of the key factors governing polytypic structure construction. Subsequently, we provide comprehensive insights into the physical properties of polytypic metal chalcogenide nanocrystals, which exhibit strong correlations with their applications. Thereafter, we emphasize the significance of polytypic nanostructures in various applications, such as photovoltaics, photocatalysis, transistors, thermoelectrics, stress sensors, and the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Finally, we present a summary of the recent advancements in this research field and provide insightful perspectives on the forthcoming challenges, opportunities, and future research directions.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors affecting the prognosis of penile cancer after surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data on 112 cases of penile cancer treated in Weifang People's Hospital from January 2013 to December 2023. Using the Kaplan-Meier survival curve, χ2 test, Fisher's exact test, and univariate and multivariate Cox risk regression analyses, we compared the clinical characteristics among different groups, and determined the independent prognostic risk factors for cancer-specific survival (CSS) of the patients. RESULTS: The 1-, 3- and 5-year CSS rates of the penile cancer patients were 78.2%, 66.1% and 63.7%, respectively. Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated a significant correlation of a higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with a lower CSS rate (P < 0.001). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed high NLR (HR = 2.6; 95% CI: 1.031-6.558; P = 0.043) to be an independent risk factor for CSS. CONCLUSION: Preoperative NLR is an independent risk factor for the prognosis of penile cancer. In addition, older age, farmer or worker occupation, lower education, preoperative lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR)≤2.81, preoperative fibrinogen (FIB)≥3.41 g/L, advanced tumor stage and tumor differentiation are associated with the poor prognosis the malignancy.

BACKGROUND: Premature children with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) have been reported to an have increased risk of visual and neurocognitive impairments, yet little is known about whether vision could affect specific neurocognition. This study aimed to clarify the correlations between neurocognition and vision in premature children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a nonrandomized, cross-sectional, observational study in a pediatric cohort with five groups: (1) full-term (n = 25), (2) prematurity without ROP (n = 154), (3) prematurity with ROP but without treatment (n = 39), (4) prematurity with ROP and with bevacizumab (IVB) treatment (n = 62), and (5) prematurity with ROP and with laser/laser + IVB treatment (n = 20). Neurocognitive function was evaluated by the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV) around the age of 4 years. Visual acuity (VA) and refractive errors were tested. Correlations between WPPSI parameters and visual outcomes were analyzed across five groups. RESULTS: Among the 300 recruited children (mean age = 4.02 + 0.97 years, male = 56.3%), 297 were assessed by WPPSI-IV and 142 were assessed by vision tests. The Full-Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ) index was worse in the premature groups. After adjusting for covariates, seven items, including FSIQ-Index (p = 0.047), fluid-reasoning index (p = 0.004), FR-percentile ranking (p = 0.008), object assembly (p = 0.034), picture concept (p = 0.034), zoo locations (p = 0.014) and bug search (p = 0.020), showed significant differences between groups. The better the best corrected VA (BCVA), the higher the scores on Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI), VCI-PR, and the subtest of information. CONCLUSIONS: Specific cognitive dysfunctions are related to the BCVA in this large cohort. Subtest performance profiles in WPPSI can be affected by prematurity, ROP treatment, and different ROP treatment. FSIQ is generally lower in premature children and even lower in children with ROP.

Children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) frequently experience chronic low-grade systemic inflammation, with the inflammasome playing a central role in OSA. This cross-sectional study evaluated the relationship between weight status, autonomic function, and systemic inflammation in a cohort of 55 children with OSA, predominantly boys (78%) with an average age of 7.4 ± 2.2 years and an apnea-hypopnea index of 14.12 ± 17.05 events/hour. Measurements were taken of body mass index (BMI), sleep heart-rate variability, morning circulatory levels of interleukin-1ß, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, and interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α, anthropometry, and polysomnography. Multiple linear regression modeling showed that an apnea-hypopnea index was significantly associated with BMI, the standard deviation of successive differences between normal-to-normal intervals during N3 sleep, and the proportion of normal-to-normal interval pairs differing by more than 50 ms during rapid-eye-movement sleep. A moderated mediation model revealed that interleukin-1 receptor antagonist levels mediated the association between BMI and interleukin-6 levels, with sympathovagal balance during N3 sleep and minimum blood oxygen saturation further moderating these relationships. This study highlights the complex relationships between BMI, polysomnographic parameters, sleep heart-rate-variability metrics, and inflammatory markers in children with OSA, underlining the importance of weight management in this context.

Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites. However, Facebook intrusion or addiction is a growing concern as it involves an excessive attachment to Facebook, which disrupts daily functioning. To date, few studies have examined whether cross-cultural differences in the measurement of Facebook addiction exist. The aim of this study was to investigate the cross-cultural validity and measurement invariance of the Facebook Intrusion Questionnaire (FIQ), one of the most widely used measures of Facebook addiction, across 25 countries (N = 12,204, 62.3% female; mean age = 25 years). Multigroup confirmatory factor analyses (MGCFA) assessed cross-cultural validity as well as invariance. Additionally, individual confirmatory factor analyses evaluated the factorial structure and measurement invariance across genders in each country. The FIQ demonstrated partial metric invariance across countries and metric (13 countries), scalar (11 countries) or residual (10 countries) invariance across genders within individual countries. A one-factor model indicated a good fit in 18 countries. Cronbach's alpha for the entire sample was .85. Our findings suggest that the FIQ may provide an adequate assessment of Facebook addiction that is psychometrically equivalent across cultures. Moreover, the questionnaire seems to be universal and suitable for studying different social media in distinct cultural environments. Consequently, this robust tool can be used to explore behaviours related to specific media that are particularly popular in any given country.

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) is the second most prevalent Gram-negative bacterium causing bloodstream infections (BSIs). In recent years, the management of BSIs caused by KP has become increasingly complex due to the emergence of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP). Although numerous studies have explored the risk factors for the development of CRKP-BSIs, the mortality of patients with KP-BSIs, and the molecular epidemiological characteristics of CRKP, the variability in data across different populations, countries, and hospitals has led to inconsistent conclusions. In this single-center retrospective observational study, we utilized logistic regression analyses to identify independent risk factors for CRKP-BSIs and factors associated with mortality in KP-BSI patients. Furthermore, a risk factor-based prediction model was developed. CRKP isolates underwent whole-genome sequencing (WGS), followed by an evaluation of microbiological characteristics, including antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes, as well as epidemiological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. RESULTS: Our study included a total of 134 patients with KP-BSIs, comprising 50 individuals infected with CRKP and 84 with carbapenem-susceptible Klebsiella pneumoniae (CSKP). The independent risk factors for CRKP-BSIs were identified as gastric catheterization (OR = 9.143; CI = 1.357-61.618; P = 0.023), prior ICU hospitalization (OR = 4.642; CI = 1.312-16.422; P = 0.017), and detection of CRKP in non-blood sites (OR = 8.112; CI = 2.130-30.894; P = 0.002). Multivariate analysis revealed that microbiologic eradication after 6 days (OR = 3.569; CI = 1.119-11.387; P = 0.032), high Pitt bacteremia score (OR = 1.609; CI = 1.226-2.111; P = 0.001), and inappropriate empirical treatment after BSIs (OR = 6.756; CI = 1.922-23.753; P = 0.003) were independent risk factors for the 28-day mortality in KP-BSIs. The prediction model confirmed that microbiologic eradication after 6.5 days and a Pitt bacteremia score of 4.5 or higher were significant predictors of the 28-day mortality. Bioinformatics analysis identified ST11 as the predominant CRKP sequence type, with blaKPC-2 as the most prevalent gene variant. CRKP stains carried multiple plasmid-mediated resistance genes along with some virulence genes. Phylogenetic analysis indicated the presence of nosocomial transmission of ST11 CRKP within the ICU. CONCLUSIONS: The analysis of risk factors for developing CRKP-BSIs and the association between KP-BSIs and 28-day mortality, along with the development of a risk factor-based prediction model and the characterization of CRKP strains, enhances clinicians' understanding of the pathogens responsible for BSIs. This understanding may help in the timely administration of antibiotic therapy for patients with suspected KP-BSIs, potentially improving outcomes.

Background: As an autoimmune disease, antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) often affects multiple organs, including the ocular system. This study aims to investigate differences in retinal thickness (RT) and retinal superficial vascular density (SVD) between patients with AAV and healthy controls (HCs) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Currently, these differences are not clear. Methods: A total of 16 AAV individuals (32 eyes) and 16 HCs (32 eyes) were recruited to this cross-sectional study conducted in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from June 2023 to September 2023. The study protocol conformed with the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki (as revised in 2013). Each image observed by OCTA was divided into 9 regions using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) subzones as a guide. Results: In the full layer, the RT of AAV patients was found to be significantly reduced in the inner superior (IS, P<0.001), outer superior (OS, P=0.003), inner temporal (IT, P=0.003), and outer temporal (OT, P<0.001) regions; inner RT was significantly lower in the IS (P=0.006), OS (P<0.001), inner nasal (IN, P=0.005), outer nasal (ON, P<0.001), and center (C, P=0.01) regions than that in HCs. Outer RT of AAV patients showed a reduction in the IS (P<0.001), as well as IT (P=0.008), and OT (P<0.001) regions. No statistically significant differences were seen in the different subregions in other different layers (P>0.05). Only the inner inferior (II) and outer inferior (OI) regions of SVD in AAV patients did not differ significantly from controls. All other regions showed a reduction in SVD. The details are as follows: IS (P<0.001), OS (P<0.001), IT (P=0.005), OT (P<0.001), IN (P<0.001), ON (P<0.001), and C (P=0.003). According to receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the full IS region [area under the curve (AUC): 0.8892, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.8041-0.9742, P<0.001] had the highest diagnostic value for AAV-induced reduction in RT. The IS (AUC: 0.9121, 95% CI: 0.8322-0.9920, P<0.001) region was also the most sensitive to changes in SVD of AAV individuals. In addition, we found that SVD in the IN region (r=-0.4224, 95% CI: -0.6779 to -0.0757, P=0.02) as well as mean visual acuity (r=-0.3922, 95% CI: -0.6579 to -0.0397, P=0.03) of AAV patients were negatively correlated with disease duration. However, we did not find an association between SVD and RT in this study. Conclusions: The findings from OCTA indicated a reduction in RT and SVD among patients with AAV. OCTA allows for the evaluation of AAV-related ocular lesions and holds promise for monitoring of disease progression through regular evaluations.

Understanding the potential carcinogenic potency of nitrosamines is necessary to setting acceptable intake limits. Nitrosamines and the components that can form them are commonly present in food, water, cosmetics, and tobacco. The recent observation of nitrosamines in pharmaceuticals highlighted the need for effective methods to determine acceptable intake limits. Herein, we describe two computational models that utilize properties based upon quantum mechanical calculations in conjunction with mechanistic insights and established data to determine the carcinogenic potency of a variety of common nitrosamines. These models can be applied to experimentally untested nitrosamines to aid in the establishment of acceptable intake limits.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are promising targets for improving anticancer treatment outcomes while eliminating recurrence, but their treatment remains a major challenge. Here, we report a nanointegrative strategy to realize CSC-targeted ferroptosis-immunotherapy through spatiotemporally controlled reprogramming of STAT3-regulated signaling circuits. Specifically, STAT3 inhibitor niclosamide (Ni) and an experimental ferroptosis drug (1S, 3R)-RSL3 (RSL3) are integrated into hyaluronic acid-modified amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) nanounits through biomineralization (CaP-PEG-HA@Ni/RSL3), which could be recognized by CD44-overexpressing CSCs and released in a synchronized manner. Ni inhibits the CSC-intrinsic STAT3-PD-L1 axis to stimulate adaptive immunity and enhance interferon gamma (IFNγ) secretion by CD8+ T cells to downregulate SLC7A11 and SLC3A2 for blocking glutathione biosynthesis. Meanwhile, Ni-dependent STAT3 inhibition also upregulates ACSL4 through downstream signaling and IFNγ feedback. These effects cooperate with RSL3-mediated GPX4 deactivation to induce pronounced ferroptosis. Furthermore, CaP-PEG-HA@Ni/RSL3 also impairs the immunosuppressive M2-like tumor-associated macrophages, while Ca2+ ions released from degraded ACP could chelate with lipid peroxides in ferroptotic CSCs to avoid CD8+ T-cell inhibition, thus boosting the effector function of activated CD8+ T cells. This study offers a cooperative ferroptosis-immunotherapeutic approach for the treatment of refractory cancer.

Cd ions are absorbed and transported from the soil by crop roots, which are the first organ to be exposed to Cd. This results in an increase in cadmium ions in crops, significantly affecting crop growth and yield. Exogenous melatonin (MT) can help reduce cadmium (Cd) stress in cotton, but the specific contribution of roots to this process remains unclear. In order to address this knowledge gap, an in-situ root phenotyping study was conducted to investigate the the phenotype and lifespan of roots under cadmium stress (Cd) and melatonin treatment (Cd + MT). The results showed that MT alleviated the decreases in plant height, leaf area, SPAD value, stem diameter, stomatal conductance and net photosynthetic rate under Cd stress, which further promoted the biomass accumulation in various cotton organs. What is more, the Cd + MT treatment increased root volume, surface area, and length under Cd stress by 25.63 %, 10.58 %, and 21.89 %, respectively, compared with Cd treatment. Interestingly, compared to Cd treatment, Cd + MT treatment also significantly extended the lifespan of roots and root hairs by 6.68 days and 2.18 days, respectively. In addition, Cd + MT treatment reduced the transport of Cd from roots to shoots, particularly to bolls, and decreased the Cd bioconcentration factor in bolls by 61.17 %, compared to Cd treatment. In conclusion, these findings show that applying MT externally helps reduce Cd stress by delaying root senescence, promoting root development and regulating Cd transport. This method can be an effective approach to managing Cd stress in cotton.
