Objectives: To explore the content, ways, and methods of family education in cultivating students' humanistic literacy. Methods: We used a cross-sectional study and collected questionnaire data from 616 eight-year clinical medical students of Central South University by a convenience sampling survey. To determine the influence of parents' educational attainment on children's humanistic literacy, the students were mainly divided into two groups including parents' education attainment was college or above (Group B) and parents' education attainment below college (Group A). Non-parametric tests are used to test the differences between the two groups in humanistic spirit, interpersonal communication, humanistic knowledge and ability, and development planning. Results: Group B had better social morality and a sense of social responsibility than group A (P=0.024, P=0.001). Compared to group A, students in group B could better integrate into the new environment, communicate with students from different institutes, and take an active part in activities (P=0.001). In a nutshell, students in group B had more excellent humanistic knowledge and ability and could consult medical literature and write in Chinese or English more proficiently than group A (P=0.0001, P=0.0001). Conclusions: We found that the eight-year medical students whose parents' highest education attainment is college or above almost mastered a higher level of humanistic literacy. It demonstrated family humanistic literacy education is irreplaceable. We recommend systematic efforts to build a reasonable and effective family humanistic literacy education platform and form an educational synergy with school education to make the cultivation of humanistic literacy among students more efficient.

Certain bacteria demonstrate the ability to target and colonize the tumor microenvironment, a characteristic that positions them as innovative carriers for delivering various therapeutic agents in cancer therapy. Nevertheless, our understanding of how bacteria adapt their physiological condition to the tumor microenvironment remains elusive. In this work, we employed liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to examine the proteome of E. coli colonized in murine tumors. Compared to E. coli cultivated in the rich medium, we found that E. coli colonized in tumors notably upregulated the processes related to ferric ions, including the enterobactin biosynthesis and iron homeostasis. This finding indicated that the tumor is an iron-deficient environment to E. coli. We also found that the colonization of E. coli in the tumor led to an increased expression of lipocalin 2 (LCN2), a host protein that can sequester the enterobactin. We therefore engineered E. coli in order to evade the nutritional immunity provided by LCN2. By introducing the IroA cluster, the E. coli synthesizes the glycosylated enterobactin, which creates steric hindrance to avoid the LCN2 sequestration. The IroA-E. coli showed enhanced resistance to LCN2 and significantly improved the anti-tumor activity in mice. Moreover, the mice cured by the IroA-E. coli treatment became resistant to the tumor re-challenge, indicating the establishment of immunological memory. Overall, our study underscores the crucial role of bacteria's ability to acquire ferric ions within the tumor microenvironment for effective cancer therapy.

In recombinant protein-producing yeast strains, cells experience high production-related stresses similar to high temperatures. It is possible to increase recombinant protein production by enhancing thermotolerance, but few studies have focused on this topic. Here we aim to identify cellular regulators that can simultaneously activate thermotolerance and high yield of recombinant protein. Through screening at 46 °C, a heat-resistant Kluyveromyces marxianus (K. marxianus) strain FDHY23 is isolated. It also exhibits enhanced recombinant protein productivity at both 30 °C and high temperatures. The CYR1N1546K mutation is identified as responsible for FDHY23's improved phenotype, characterized by weakened adenylate cyclase activity and reduced cAMP production. Introducing this mutation into the wild-type strain greatly enhances both thermotolerance and recombinant protein yields. RNA-seq analysis reveals that under high temperature and recombinant protein production conditions, CYR1 mutation-induced reduction in cAMP levels can stimulate cells to improve its energy supply system and optimize material synthesis, meanwhile enhance stress resistance, based on the altered cAMP signaling cascades. Our study provides CYR1 mutation as a novel target to overcome the bottleneck in achieving high production of recombinant proteins under high temperature conditions, and also offers a convenient approach for high-throughput screening of recombinant proteins with high yields.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising candidates for spintronic applications. Maintaining their atomically smooth interfaces during integration of ferromagnetic (FM) electrodes is crucial since conventional metal deposition tends to induce defects at the interfaces. Meanwhile, the difficulties in picking up FM metals with strong adhesion and in achieving conductance match between FM electrodes and spin transport channels make it challenging to fabricate high-quality 2D spintronic devices using metal transfer techniques. Here, we report a solvent-free magnetic electrode transfer technique that employs a graphene layer to assist in the transfer of FM metals. It also serves as part of the FM electrode after transfer for optimizing spin injection, which enables the realization of spin valves with excellent performance based on various 2D materials. In addition to two-terminal devices, we demonstrate that the technique is applicable for four-terminal spin valves with nonlocal geometry. Our results provide a promising future of realizing 2D spintronic applications using the developed magnetic electrode transfer technique.

Gut microbiota dysfunction is a key factor affecting chronic kidney disease (CKD) susceptibility. Puerariae lobatae Radix (PLR), a traditional Chinese medicine and food homologous herb, is known to promote the gut microbiota homeostasis; however, its role in renoprotection remains unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy and potential mechanism of PLR to alleviate CKD. An 8­week 2% NaCl­feeding murine model was applied to induce CKD and evaluate the therapeutic effect of PLR supplementary. After gavage for 8 weeks, The medium and high doses of PLR significantly alleviated CKD­associated creatinine, urine protein increasement and nephritic histopathological injury. Moreover, PLR protected kidney from fibrosis by reducing inflammatory response and downregulating the canonical Wnt/ß­catenin pathway. Furthermore, PLR rescued the gut microbiota dysbiosis and protected against high salt­induced gut barrier dysfunction. Enrichment of Akkermansia and Bifidobacterium was found after PLR intervention, the relative abundances of which were in positive correlation with normal maintenance of renal histology and function. Next, fecal microbiota transplantation experiment verified that the positive effect of PLR on CKD was, at least partially, exerted through gut microbiota reestablishment and downregulation of the Wnt/ß­catenin pathway. The present study provided evidence for a new function of PLR on kidney protection and put forward a potential therapeutic strategy target for CKD.

BACKGROUND: Prior work documented circadian rhythm impacts on efficacy and toxicity of cancer therapies. METHODS: Secondary analysis of prospective, phase II trial of metastatic HNSCC randomized to nivolumab+/-SBRT. Used cutoffs of 1100 and 1630. Timing classified by first infusion or majority of SBRT (e.g., PM SBRT defined by two or three fractions after 1630). RESULTS: Of 62 patients, there was no significant difference in median PFS between AM nivolumab (n = 7, 175 days), PM nivolumab (n = 21, 58 days), or Mid-Day nivolumab (n = 34, 67 days; p = 0.8). There was no significant difference in median PFS with AM SBRT (n = 4, 78 days), PM SBRT (n = 13, 111 days), or Mid-Day SBRT (n = 15, 63 days; p = 0.8). There was no significant difference in Grade 3-4 toxicity or ORR. Sensitivity analyses with other timepoints were negative. CONCLUSIONS: Further work may elucidate circadian impacts on select patients, tumors, and therapies; however, we found no significant effect in this study.

OBJECTIVE: Hard-to-heal diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are associated with higher mortality rates and an increased medical burden for patients. ON101, a new topical cream, exhibited better healing efficacy than the control dressing in a Phase III trial. In this post-hoc analysis, we further identify whether ON101 can improve the healing of ulcers with hard-to-heal risk factors in this cohort of DFU patients. APPROACH: To compare the efficacy of ON101 with absorbent dressing among various hard-to-heal wounds in patients with DFU, a post hoc analysis of a randomized phase III trial included 276 DFU patients was performed by subgrouping those patients based on ulcer depth, location, size, duration, and patients' glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: In the full analysis set, the proportion of patients achieving healing was 61.7% in the ON101 group and 37.0% in the comparator (P =0.0001). In sub-group analysis according to risk factors, ON101 demonstrated superior healing capacity on Wagner grade 2 ulcers (P < 0.0001); plantar ulcers (P = 0.0016), ulcers size ≥5 cm² (P = 0.0122), ulcers duration ≥3 months (P = 0.0043); for patients with HbA1c ≥9% (P = 0.0285); and patients with BMI ≥25 (P = 0.0005). INNOVATION: ON101, a novel therapeutic drug, can modulate the functions of macrophages and demonstrate superior healing rates to conventional absorbent dressing in patients with hard-to-heal DFUs. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this post hoc study suggest that ON101 is a better therapeutic option than conventional dressing used in treatment for DFU patients with higher HbA1c, BMI, or ulcers with complex conditions such as longer duration, deeper wounds, larger size, and plantar location.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with the properties of structural stability, semi-volatility, and hydrophobicity are toxic and persistent in environments; thus, their transport and fate in agroecosystems is essential for reducing PAH accumulation in the edible parts of crops. Here, we cultivated cabbages (Brassica pekinensis L.) and carrots (Daucus carota L.) in PAH-contaminated soils under the greenhouse and field conditions. After harvesting, we observed a 9.5-46% reduction in soil ∑PAH concentrations. There were 37% of bioconcentration factors (BCFbs) > 1 and 93% of translocation factors (TFab) > 1, while low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAHs had higher BCFbs than high-molecular-weight (HMW) PAHs. The PAH concentrations showed significant and positive correlations among soils, the belowground parts, and the aboveground parts. The toxicity equivalent concentration (TEQBaP) followed the order of cabbage (greenhouse) > cabbage (field) > carrot (greenhouse) > carrot (field), suggesting potentially higher health risks in cabbage relative to carrot and vegetables under the greenhouse relative to field condition. Our study suggested growing carrots under field conditions as a management strategy for reducing the risks of vegetables grown in PAH-contaminated soils.

Trichinellosis is a serious foodborne and zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Trichinella family. At present, the main on-site detection method for Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) infection is the lateral flow assay (LFA). Other diagnostic techniques for this parasite cannot be applied to on-site testing due to their reliance on special instruments. Here, we established an ELISA smartphone-based method for detecting anti-T. spiralis antibodies in pig serum. The use of horseradish peroxidase-labeled goat anti-pig IgG-modified gold nanoparticle (AuNPs@HRP-IgG) effectively increased the sensitivity of the method. The entire reaction was carried out at room temperature without the need for special instruments. A low-cost and portable device for imaging and processing experimental data was also developed. Validation analysis revealed that the specificity of the test was 98.89 %, while its sensitivity was 100.00 %. T. spiralis antibodies could be detected in pig serum beginning at 25 dpi after infection with the muscle larvae. This visual immunosensor facilitates on-site detection of T. spiralis, especially in regions lacking specialized laboratory equipment.

Research on riverine microplastics has gradually increased, highlighting an area for further exploration: the lack of extensive, large-scale regional variations analysis due to methodological and spatiotemporal limitations. Herein, we constructed and applied a comprehensive framework for synthesizing and analyzing literature data on riverine microplastics to enable comparative research on the regional variations on a large scale. Research results showed that in 76 rivers primarily located in Asia, Europe, and North America, the microplastic abundance of surface water in Asian rivers was three times higher than that in Euro-America rivers, while sediment in Euro-American rivers was five times more microplastics than Asia rivers, indicating significant regional variations (p < 0.001). Additionally, based on the income levels of countries, rivers in lower-middle and upper-middle income countries had significantly (p < 0.001) higher abundance of microplastics in surface water compared to high-income countries, while the opposite was true for sediment. This phenomenon was preliminarily attributed to varying levels of urbanization across countries. Our proposed framework for synthesizing and analyzing microplastic literature data provides a holistic understanding of microplastic disparities in the environment, and can facilitate broader discussions on management and mitigation strategies.

OBJECTIVE: To compare clinicopathological and imaging features of micro- and minitumors of the parotid gland and provide a reference for preoperative prediction of benign vs malignant status. STUDY DESIGN: Patients with parotid gland tumors treated surgically were selected. Relevant clinicopathological and imaging data were collected for patients with maximum tumor diameters ≤20 mm on preoperative computed tomography (CT). The lesions were divided into 2 groups, microtumors and minitumors, based on maximum tumor diameter. CT imaging features of benign and malignant tumors were compared through binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Microtumors and minitumors were categorized by maximum diameters <10 mm (n = 74) and 10-20 mm (n = 611), respectively. Benign and malignant minitumors exhibited significant differences in boundary, tumor density, margin morphology, spiculation margin, and CT values in the plain and arterial phase (P ≤ .027), resembling those found in typical malignant parotid gland tumors. However, no significant differences were observed between benign and malignant microtumors. Logistic regression analysis identified boundary, margin morphology, and spiculation margin as independent predictors of malignancy. The prediction model excelled in identifying benign lesions but was less successful in identifying malignancies. CONCLUSION: Parotid gland minitumors had imaging features similar to typical larger malignant tumors. Active exclusion of the malignant risk and early surgical treatment is recommended for these tumors.

PURPOSE: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) often metastasizes to the brain and has poor prognosis. SCLC subtypes distinguished by expressing transcriptional factors ASCL1 or NEUROD1 have been identified. This study investigates the impact of transcription factor-defined SCLC subtype on incidence and outcomes of brain metastases (BMs). METHODS: Patients with SCLC with ASCL1 (A) and NEUROD1 (N) immunohistochemical expression status were identified and classified: (1) A+/N-, (2) A+/N+, (3) A-/N+, and (4) A-/N-. Cumulative incidence competing risk analyses were used to assess incidence of CNS progression. Cox proportional hazards models were used for multivariable analyses of overall survival (OS) and CNS progression-free survival (CNS-PFS). RESULTS: Of 164 patients, most were either A+/N- or A+/N+ (n = 62, n = 63, respectively). BMs were present at diagnosis in 24 patients (15%). Among them, the 12-month cumulative incidence of subsequent CNS progression was numerically highest for A+/N- (50% [95% CI, 10.5 to 74.7]; P = .47). Among those BM-free at diagnosis, the 12-month cumulative incidence of CNS progression was numerically the highest for A+/N- (16% [95% CI, 7.5 to 27.9]) and A-/N+ (9.1% [95% CI, 0.0 to 34.8]; P = .20). Both subtypes, A+/N- and A-/N+, had worse OS compared with A+/N+ (A+/N-: hazard ratio [HR], 1.62 [95% CI, 1.01 to 2.51]; P < .05; A-/N+: HR, 3.02 [95% CI, 1.35 to 6.76]; P = .007). Excellent response rates (28, 65% CR/PR) across subtypes were seen in patients who had CNS-directed radiotherapy versus systemic therapy alone (9, 36% CR/PR). CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this report is the first to investigate CNS-specific outcomes based on transcription factor subtypes in patients with SCLC. BM-free patients at diagnosis with A+/N- or A-/N+ subtypes had worse outcomes compared with those with transcriptional factor coexpression. Further investigation into the mechanisms and implications of SCLC subtyping on CNS-specific outcomes is warranted to ultimately guide personalized care.

Low back pain is a common clinical symptom of intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD), which seriously affects the quality of life of the patients. The abnormal apoptosis and senescence of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) play important roles in the pathogenesis of IVDD. PHLDA2 is an imprinted gene related to cell apoptosis and tumour progression. However, its role in NPC degeneration is not yet clear. Therefore, this study was set to explore the effects of PHLDA2 on NPC senescence and apoptosis and the underlying mechanisms. The expression of PHLDA2 was examined in human nucleus pulposus (NP) tissues and NPCs. Immunohistochemical staining, magnetic resonance imaging imaging and western blot were performed to evaluate the phenotypes of intervertebral discs. Senescence and apoptosis of NPCs were assessed by SA-ß-galactosidase, flow cytometry and western blot. Mitochondrial function was investigated by JC-1 staining and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the expression level of PHLDA2 was abnormally elevated in degenerated human NP tissues and NPCs. Furthermore, knockdown of PHLDA2 can significantly inhibit senescence and apoptosis of NPCs, whereas overexpression of PHLDA2 can reverse senescence and apoptosis of NPCs in vitro. In vivo experiment further confirmed that PHLDA2 knockdown could alleviate IVDD in rats. Knockdown of PHLDA2 could also reverse senescence and apoptosis in IL-1ß-treated NPCs. JC-1 staining indicated PHLDA2's knockdown impaired disruption of the mitochondrial membrane potential and also ameliorated superstructural destruction of NPCs as showed by transmission electron microscopy. Finally, we found the PHLDA2 knockdown promoted Collagen-II expression and suppressed MMP3 expression in NPCs by repressing wnt/ß-catenin pathway. In conclusion, the results of the present study showed that PHLDA2 promotes IL-1ß-induced apoptosis and senescence of NP cells via mitochondrial route by activating the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway, and suggested that therapy targeting PHLDA2 may provide valuable insights into possible IVDD therapies.

Background: Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a hypermetabolic syndrome with high mortality rates. Early detection and prompt intravenous administration of dantrolene are crucial for effective management of MH. However, there is currently a lack of comprehensive nationwide surveys on the availability of dantrolene and anesthesiologists' understanding of MH in China. Methods: A nationwide survey was conducted between January 2022 and June 2022. Online questionnaires on the cognition of MH among anesthesiologists in China were sent through social platforms to anesthesiologists in mainland China. Data regarding participants' perception of MH-related knowledge, availability of domestic dantrolene, and reported MH cases were collected in this study. Results: Responses were collected from a total of 11,354 anesthesiologists representing 31 provinces across the Chinese mainland. Among the 11 scoring questions, the highest accuracy rates were observed for the question regarding therapeutic drugs for MH (99.3%) and the characteristics of MH (98.0%). Conversely, the question pertaining to the earliest clinical signs of MH had the lowest accuracy rate (23.5%). Significant variations were observed in the scores among different professional titles (P=0.003), academic degree (P<0.001), hospital classification (P<0.001), and urban hierarchy (P<0.001). Of the respondents, 919 (8.1%) anesthesiologists reported dantrolene availability in their hospitals, and 631 (5.6%) indicated unclear. A total of 136 hospitals in this survey reported at least one previous case of MH. Conclusion: Mainland China faces challenges such as insufficient experience in diagnosing and treating MH, as well as difficulty in obtaining dantrolene. To improve the public awareness of MH, it is imperative to establish and promote a refined MH training system. Additionally, a streamlined and rapid dantrolene linkage emergency system should be implemented to ensure prompt access to the drug.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a globally prevalent and lethal cancer form, whose precise mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Increasing evidence suggests that N6-methyladenosine (m6A) plays a crucial role in cancer progression. This study aimed to explore the biological function of m6A modification and vir-like m6A methyltransferase associated (VIRMA) in HNSCC. We conducted an analysis of VIRMA expression in HNSCC cells using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and employed reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and western blotting to assess its expression levels in HNSCC cell lines. Additionally, m6A levels in HNSCC cells were quantified, and the correlation between VIRMA expression levels and the clinical and pathological features of other genes was analyzed. Upon knocking down VIRMA levels, we assessed HNSCC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and validated downstream genes using RT-qPCR and western blot. Our findings suggested that VIRMA, as an m6A-related regulator, may significantly influence HNSCC progression by regulating ubiquitin protein ligase E3 component N-recognin 5 (UBR5) through m6A modification. Precise recognition of the intraparotid facial nerve (IFN) is crucial during parotid tumor resection. We aimed to explore the application effect of direct visualization of the IFN in parotid tumor resection. Fifteen patients with parotid tumors were enrolled in this study and underwent specific radiological scanning in which the IFNs were displayed as high-intensity images. After image segmentation, IFN could be preoperatively directly visualized. Mixed reality combined with surgical navigation were applied to intraoperatively directly visualize the segmentation results as real-time three-dimensional holograms, guiding the surgeons in IFN dissection and tumor resection. Radiological visibility of the IFN, accuracy of image segmentation and postoperative facial nerve function were analyzed. The trunks of IFN were directly visible in radiological images for all patients. Of 37 landmark points on the IFN, 36 were accurately segmented. Four patients were classified as House-Brackmann Grade I postoperatively. Two patients with malignancies had postoperative long-standing facial paralysis. Direct visualization of IFN was a feasible novel method with high accuracy that could assist in recognition of IFN and therefore potentially improve the treatment outcome of parotid tumor resection.

BACKGROUND: Relatively little is known about the plaque characteristics of border-zone infarcts and how they differ between cortical border-zone (CBZ) and internal border-zone (IBZ) infarcts. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational cohort study of patients with intracranial atherosclerotic disease who underwent high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) examination. Individuals with border-zone infarcts in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory, detected by diffusion-weighted imaging, were enrolled. Plaque morphological and compositional parameters of both IBZ and CBZ groups were compared. Independent predictors were identified using a binary logistic regression model, and the sensitivity and specificity of the model were assessed using a receiver operating characteristic curve. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis further explored differences in stroke recurrence between BZ patients with mono or dual antiplatelet therapy. RESULTS: We reviewed 101 symptomatic patients with border-zone infarcts (BZ) within the MCA territory in the study. Out of the patients meeting the imaging eligibility criteria, we detected 34 cases with isolated IBZ, 23 cases with isolated CBZ, and six cases with both IBZ and CBZ infarcts. Those with IBZ infarcts had a higher plaque burden than those without (p < 0.001), and those with CBZ infarcts exhibited a complicated plaque less frequently than those without (37.9% vs 67.6%, p = 0.018). In those with isolated IBZ or CBZ infarcts, plaque burden was independently associated with isolated IBZ infarcts (odd ratio=1.08; 95% CI, 1.02-1.15; p = 0.023). During the median follow-up period of 37 (27, 50) months, 13.8% of patients receiving early dual antiplatelet treatment and 30.4% of those on single antiplatelet therapy experienced stroke recurrence (p = 0.182). CONCLUSION: Intracranial atherosclerotic plaque morphology and composition differ between patients with IBZ and those with CBZ infarcts. Higher plaque burden is more associated with IBZ infarcts.

BACKGROUND: For elderly patients with high-grade gliomas, 3-week hypofractionated radiotherapy (HFRT) is noninferior to standard long-course radiotherapy (LCRT). We analyzed real-world utilization of HFRT with and without systemic therapy in Medicare beneficiaries treated with RT for primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors using Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data. METHODS: Radiation modality, year, age (65-74, 75-84, or ≥85 years), and site of care (freestanding vs hospital-affiliated) were evaluated. Utilization of HFRT (11-20 fractions) versus LCRT (21-30 or 31-40 fractions) and systemic therapy was evaluated by multivariable logistic regression. Medicare spending over the 90-day episode after RT planning initiation was analyzed using multivariable linear regression. RESULTS: From 2015 to 2019, a total of 10,702 RT courses (ie, episodes) were included (28% HFRT; 65% of patients aged 65-74 years). A considerable minority died within 90 days of RT planning initiation (n=1,251; 12%), and 765 (61%) of those received HFRT. HFRT utilization increased (24% in 2015 to 31% in 2019; odds ratio [OR], 1.2 per year; 95% CI, 1.1-1.2) and was associated with older age (≥85 vs 65-74 years; OR, 6.8; 95% CI, 5.5-8.4), death within 90 days of RT planning initiation (OR, 5.0; 95% CI, 4.4-5.8), hospital-affiliated sites (OR, 1.4; 95% CI, 1.3-1.6), conventional external-beam RT (vs intensity-modulated RT; OR, 2.7; 95% CI, 2.3-3.1), and no systemic therapy (OR, 1.2; 95% CI, 1.1-1.3; P<.001 for all). Increasing use of HFRT was concentrated in hospital-affiliated sites (P=.002 for interaction). Most patients (69%) received systemic therapy with no differences by site of care (P=.12). Systemic therapy utilization increased (67% in 2015 to 71% in 2019; OR, 1.1 per year; 95% CI, 1.0-1.1) and was less likely for older patients, patients who died within 90 days of RT planning initiation, those who received conventional external-beam RT, and those who received HFRT. HFRT significantly reduced spending compared with LCRT (adjusted ß for LCRT = +$8,649; 95% CI, $8,544-$8,755), whereas spending modestly increased with systemic therapy (adjusted ß for systemic therapy = +$270; 95% CI, $176-$365). CONCLUSIONS: Although most Medicare beneficiaries received LCRT for primary brain tumors, HFRT utilization increased in hospital-affiliated centers. Despite high-level evidence for elderly patients, discrepancy in HFRT implementation by site of care persists. Further investigation is needed to understand why patients with short survival may still receive LCRT, because this has major quality-of-life and Medicare spending implications.

A series of well-defined diblock copolymers, namely, 3,4-polyisoprene-block-syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene (3,4-PI-b-s-1,2-PBD), with a soft-hard block sequence were synthesized via an in situ sequential polymerization process using a robust iron-based catalytic system Fe(acac)3/(isocyanoimino) triptenylphosphorane (IITP)/AliBu3. This catalyst exhibits vigorous activity and temperature tolerance, achieving a polymerization activity of 5.41 × 106 g mol(Fe)-1 h-1 at 70 °C with a [IP]/[Fe] ratio of 15,000. Moreover, the quasi-living polymerization characteristics of the catalyst were verified through kinetic experiments. The first-stage polymerization of isoprene (IP) is performed at 30 °C to give a soft 3,4-PI block, and then a quantitative amount of 1,3-butadiene was added in situ to the quasi-living polymerization system to produce a second hard s-1,2-PBD. The s-1,2-PBD segments in block copolymers display a rodlike morphology contrasting with the spherulitic morphology characteristic of s-1,2-PBD homopolymers. The precise tunability of the length of the soft and hard chain segments of these novel elastic materials with the feed ratio of IP and BD, endowing them with outstanding mechanical properties and excellent dynamic mechanical properties, which are expected to be promising high-performance rubber materials.
