RESUMEN

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of prompt phacoemulsification, intraocular lens implantation, visco-goniosynechialysis, combined with pseudo-pupilloplasty for refractory acute primary angle closure (APAC) with atonic dilated pupil and to describe a feasible method of pupilloplasty. Methods A consecutive series of refractory APAC patients who had atonic dilated pupil and undergone prompt phacoemulsification combined with pseudo-pupilloplasty at our center were retrospectively analyzed. Pseudo-pupilloplasty referred to a method of pupilloplasty which included 4.5-mm capsulorhexis, postoperative opacification of anterior capsule residue, and ultimate pseudo-pupil formation. Preoperative and postoperative measurements included intraocular pressure (IOP), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and anterior chamber depth (ACD). Intraoperative and postoperative complications were documented. The process of pseudo-pupil formation was also observed. Results A total of 20 eyes of 19 APAC patients were followed up for 19.7 ± 9.8 months. IOP was lowered from preoperative 44.0 ± 9.8 mmHg to 15.5 ± 2.6 mmHg at final visit (t=11.945, P< 0.001). ACD was deepened from preoperative 1.77 ± 0.21 mm to 3.40 ± 0.20 mm at final visit (t=-27.711, P< 0.001). Twelve of 20 eyes had residual angle synechiae, whereas only 3 eyes needed anti-glaucoma medications. No severe complication was observed. All eyes had pseudo-pupil gradually formed within 3 months, accompanied with the gradual improvement of BCVA from preoperative 1.18 ± 0.55 to 0.58 ± 0.22, 0.26 ± 0.09, 0.11 ± 0.09, and 0.11 ± 0.09 at postoperative day 1, month 1, month 3, and last visit. Conclusions Prompt phacoemulsification-goniosynechialysis is effective and safe for refractory APAC with atonic dilated pupil. Pseudo-pupilloplasty is a feasible procedure for pupil reconstruction.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion is extremely common, especially unilateral artery, which can result in a significant incidence of cerebral infarction. OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of whole-brain computed tomography perfusion (CTP) imaging combined with dynamic CT angiography (dCTA) in the evaluation of pial collateral circulation in patients with MCA occlusion. METHODS: Whole-brain CTP and dCTA images were acquired in 58 patients with unilateral MCA occlusion. All patients were divided into three groups according to the American Society of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology/Society of Interventional Radiology (ASITN/SIR) collateral score (by CTA). The CTP parameters were analysed, including relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF), relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV), relative mean transit time (rMTT), and relative time to peak (rTTP). Patients were followed up with the modified Rankin scale (mRS). All cases in this study were confirmed by DSA. RESULTS: The CTP parameters of the MCA blood supply area on the affected side of patients with different degrees of stenosis were significantly different from those on the unaffected side. There are significant differences in the CTP parameters and openings of the Willis circle in patients with different degrees of stenosis. Significant differences were found in the number of patients with good prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: Whole-brain CT perfusion combined with dynamic CTA can structurally and functionally evaluate the establishment of pial collateral circulation and its effect on cerebral hemodynamic changes.

RESUMEN

Objective To observe the role of ultrasound biomicroscopy(UBM)in two-year post-operative follow-up for primary open-angle glaucoma patients with modified CO2 laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery(CLASS).Methods This was a case series study.A combination of modified CLASS and preoperative laser iris management was administered to 28 eyes.Visual acuity, intraocular pressure(IOP),and slit-lamp examinations, visual field testing, and gonioscopy were carried out at baseline and until 24 months postoperatively.UBM examination was performed at 1,3,12 and 24 months postoperatively. Results Compared with the mean preoperative IOP [(30.61±10.59)mmHg],the IOP at each time point after operation was significantly lowered [(15.15±5.87),(12.56±3.24),(13.15±2.73),(13.75±2.55)and(13.75±2.46)mmHg at 1,3,6,12 and 24 months, respectively;all P<0.001].Complete success rates and qualified success rates at 12 months and 24 months were 60.71%,89.29% and 53.57%,85.71%,respectively.UBM images can present "dolphin head sign" after successful CLASS.The thickness of trabeculo-Descemet's window was(0.13±0.03)mm,which had no significant correlation with postoperative IOP at 12(r=-0.278,P=0.144)and 24 months(r=0.026,P=0.895).UBM examination revealed a severe scleral lake diminution(a change > 50%)in 1 eye(3.57%)at 12 months and 3 eyes(10.71%)at 24 months. There was no statistical significance detected between the size of the scleral lake and IOP after CLASS.Non-founctional blebs were found in 16 eyes(57.14%)at 12 months and 25 eyes(89.28%)at 24 months. Two eyes(7.14%)demonstrated severe peripheral anterior synechiae at 24 months, requiring surgical intervention. Conclusions UBM can effectively observe the morphology of the scleral lake, anterior chamber angle and filtering blebs in post-operative follow-up after modified CLASS,and give early warning of complications. It plays an important role in ensuring the success of CLASS.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To compare the spectral computed tomography (CT) imaging parameters between squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (AC) at the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ). METHODS: A total of 80 patients were enrolled in this retrospective study. Among them, 35 were diagnosed with SCC (SCC group) and 45 were diagnosed with AC (AC group). All patients underwent an enhanced scan with spectral CT. The following CT imaging parameters were evaluated: iodine concentration (IC), water content (WC), effective atomic number (Eff-Z) and slope of the spectral HU curve (λHU) of lesions. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the predictive value of spectral CT imaging parameters for diagnosis of SCC and AC. RESULTS: Patients with SCC had lower IC, Eff-Z, and λHU in arterial phase and venous phase compared with AC (p< 0.05). There were no significant differences in WC between the two groups. ROC curve analyses revealed that IC, Eff-Z, and λHU in arterial phase and venous phase were predictors for diagnosis of SCC and AC (AUC > 0.5). Moreover, the IC, Eff-Z and λHU in venous phase had better differential diagnostic performances than that in arterial phase. CONCLUSIONS: Spectral CT could be useful in the differential diagnosis of SCC and AC at the GEJ. Therefore, a routine spectral CT scan is recommended for patients with carcinoma of the GEJ.

RESUMEN

Circular RNA (circRNA) is a type of closed circular RNA molecules formed by reverse splicing, which exists widely in organisms and has become a research hotspot in non-coding RNAs in recent years. Skeletal muscle plays the role of coordinating movement and maintaining normal metabolism and endocrine in organisms. With the development of sequencing and bioinformatics analysis technology, the functions and regulation mechanisms of circRNAs in skeletal muscle development have been gradually revealed. In this review, we summarize the types of molecular regulatory mechanisms, the classical research ideas and the functional research methods of circRNAs, and the research progress of circRNAs involved in normal development of skeletal muscle and regulation of skeletal muscle disease, in order to provide a reference to further study of the genetic mechanisms of circRNAs in the regulation of skeletal muscle development.

RESUMEN

As it is well known, proper exercise benefits our mind and body, especially the skeletal muscle. Exercise increases the capacity of muscle metabolism, enhances the biological function of mitochondria, regulates the transformation of muscle fiber types and increases the muscle power. In recent years, more and more researches show that epigenetic regulation plays an important role in strengthening the muscle, and these studies mainly include DNA methylation, histone modification, and regulation of miRNA expression. In order to adapt to the body movement, these three epigenetic patterns change the metabolic capacity of skeletal muscle, mitochondrial biological function and muscle fiber types by regulating the gene expression of skeletal muscle. In this review, we summarize research progresses of exercise-induced epigenetic regulation of gene expression of skeletal muscle, in order to provide a reference for further studies of how sports improve our body health.

RESUMEN

Enhancers are key cis-acting gene regulatory elements in eukaryotes, which can effectively promote the expression of target genes. Emerging evidence showed that enhancers in activation state could be transcribed to enhancer RNAs (eRNAs), the processes of which are regulated by various signaling systems and actions of signal-dependent transcription factors. Compared with the other transcripts (e.g. lncRNA, mRNA), eRNAs have shorter sequences, lower stability, and higher tissue specificity. eRNAs play roles in the initiation or stabilization of enhancer-promoter looping, and promote the expression of target genes. Recent studies have further showed that eRNAs have crucial roles in biological processes, such as development and disease initiation and progression. However, functional studies of eRNAs are currently lacking, and the regulatory mechanisms of eRNAs are still uncertain. Herein, we focus on the features, research methods and functional properties of eRNAs, and discusse the possibility of using eRNAs as therapeutic targets. We hope this discussion might provide some insights for further research on eRNAs.

RESUMEN

This article reports a rare case of bilateral choroidal occlusion that occurred in a 24-year-old woman with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This young lady concurred with aorta ventralis thrombosis and bilateral iliac artery occlusion when presented, and experienced a rapid deterioration of vision. She also has a history of recurrent miscarriage. Corticosteroid, immunosuppression and anticoagulation therapy were administered. Patients with APS associated with SLE are at risk for thrombotic phenomena, which may affect the ocular vessels of all sizes, including choroidal vessel. Our case alerts ophthalmologists and rheumatologists that bilateral choroidal occlusion may indeed be developed in patients with APS associated with SLE, and is a potential cause of visual morbidity.

RESUMEN

Chenghua pig is one of the famous indigenous breeds of Sichuan province in China. In the study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Chenghua pig was first determined. The total mitochondrial genome is 16,760 bp in length and its overall base composition of the circle genome is A (34.71%), T (25.79%), C (26.20%) and G (13.30%), respectively, indicating an A-T (60.50%)-rich feature. It contains the typical structure, including 22 transfer RNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes and a major non-coding control region (D-Loop region). The D-loop region contains two different repeat motifs. According to the phylogenetic tree, we can infer that it is reasonable to divide Chenghua pig into the genus Sus Scrofa in southwest China. The mitochondrial genome would play an important role in population genetics and phylogenetic analysis of Sus Scrofa.

RESUMEN

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) play an important role in life science. The most widely studied protein modifications in biological science include protein phosphorylation, acylation, glycosylation, ubiquitination, acetylation, oxidation, methylation and so on. This review outlines current achievements in the study of protein modifications in muscle food using proteomic approaches. First we describe the general knowledge of protein modifications and then the development of proteomic approaches for the characterization of such modifications. Second, we describe the effects of protein modifications on muscle foods and devote our main attention to the application of proteomic approaches for the analysis of these modifications. We conclude that proteomics analysis is powerful for the study of protein modifications and analysis of meat quality characteristics in the process of food production.

RESUMEN

The epidemiological characteristics of Sjögren syndrome (SS) are significantly varied in different countries. We conducted the present study to survey the epidemiological characteristics of primary SS in China. We recruited 483 primary SS patients from 16 Chinese medical centers nationwide from January 2009 to November 2011 and assessed salivary and lacrimal gland dysfunction, organ involvement, and autoimmunity in these patients. The cohort included 456 women and 27 men (ratio, 17:1; mean age at onset, 42 ±â€Š11 years; median age at diagnosis, 49 years; range, 41-56 years). Male patients showed a lower frequency of xerophthalmia (37.0% vs 60.7%) and a higher frequency of arthritis (40.7% vs 16.4%). Young-onset patients showed a higher frequency of low C3 levels (57.7% vs 36.3%) and pancytopenia (22.2% vs 8.8%). Patients with systemic involvement had a higher frequency of immunoglobulin A (IgA) (39.4% vs 22.5%) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) (12.4% vs 37.9%). Patients with pulmonary involvement had a higher parotid enlargement (21.4% vs 10.2%), purpura (12.1% vs 5.7%) and higher anti-La/SS-B (61.7% vs 41.8%), immunoglobulin G (IgG) (80.7% vs 64.6%) and IgA (48.9% vs 30.6%) levels. Patients with anti-Ro/SSA antibodies had more frequent exocrine gland symptoms and some extraglandular symptoms and immunological alterations. Compared with previous studies performed in other countries, SS patients in China showed particular clinical manifestation, systemic involvement, and immunological alterations.

RESUMEN

Satellite cell is a kind of myogenic stem cells, which plays an important role in muscle development and injury repair. Through proliferation, differentiation and fusion of muscle fiber can satellite cells make new myonuclear, leading to the hypertrophy of skeletal muscle and fiber type transformation, and this would further affect the meat quality. Here, we review the relationship between muscle fiber development and meat quality attributes as well as the influence of the satellite cell differentiation on muscle fiber character. Besides, we also summarize the classical signaling pathway (i.e., Notch etc.) and influence of epigenetic regulation (i.e. miRNA) on muscle quality.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the impact of combination use of prostaglandin analogue and cholinergic agonists on main matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) synthesized by albino rabbit ciliary muscle. METHODS: Normal adult albino rabbits were divided into the control group, 2% pilocarpine group, 0.004% travoprost group and travoprost plus pilocarpine group. Two rabbits in the control group were executed after treated with normal saline for one day. Two rabbits were separately executed on the 7th, 14th and 24th day of the treatment in each drug treated group. In each subgroup ciliary muscle band of 4 eyes was taken and made into homogenate. The MMPs activities of 10 subgroups were assayed by zymography. Bands' intensity which represents the activity of MMPs was measured by the UltraViolet Illumination system. RESULTS: A bright band of MMP-1/2 was showed on each lane at the position corresponding to the molecular weight of 62 kD in the ciliary smooth muscles electrophoresis. When ion Zn and Ca was displaced by MMPs inhibitor EDTA, this bright band disappeared. Compared with the control group, MMP1/2 activity increased by 4.0%, 4.1% and 14.0% after 7, 14 and 24 days of pilocarpine treatment. Corresponding data was 23.2%, 61.7% and 111.5% in the travoprost group and 49.3%, 68.0% and 88.4% in the travoprost plus pilocarpine group. CONCLUSIONS: Pilocarpine has little effect on activity of MMP1/2. Travoprost can increase activity of MMP1/2 gradually. Activity of MMP1/2 is rapidly increased by pilocarpine combined with travoprost, but shows small change with the prolonged treatment.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the predictive factors of refractory glaucoma treated with diode laser transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (TSCP) in a midterm observation. METHODS: Fifty-four consecutive patients (54 eyes) with refractory glaucoma were enrolled and underwent TSCP (power of 1.5-2.0 W, exposure time of 2 seconds and 20-50 applications). Patients were regularly followed up for 12 months. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured before TSCP treatment and at each follow-up visit. Patients were divided into the sensitive and insensitive groups according to the effect of a single treatment of TSCP on IOP. The success rate was defined as the percentage of eyes achieving an IOP between 5 and 21 mm Hg following TSCP therapy at their final follow up visit. Difference of age between the sensitive and insensitive groups was evaluated with independent-samples T test and that of gender distribution of two groups was evaluated with Fisher's exact test. The success rate of different types of glaucoma to TSCP was calculated. RESULTS: A total of 32 patients were sensitive to TSCP (sensitive group) and 22 patients were insensitive to TSCP (insensitive group). The success rates of female (77.8%, 14/18) and cases being over 50 years (71.4%, 20/28) were higher than those of male (50.0%, 18/36) and ones being under 50 years (46.2%, 12/26) (all P>0.05). The age of the sensitive and insensitive groups was 56.0+/-15.5 and 46.4+/-15.4 years, respectively (P=0.029). The age (P=0.029) and gender distribution (P=0.046) of the two groups had significant difference. The success rate of neovascular glaucoma, primary angle-closure glaucoma, primary open angle glaucoma, traumatic glaucoma, uveitic glaucoma, and secondary glaucoma after silicone oil injection to TSCP was 57.1%, 100.0%, 50.0%, 20.0%, 81.8%, and 0%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Age, gender, and type of glaucoma appear to be associated with effect of TSCP on IOP control.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Intraocular pressure (IOP) is a elementary data in diagnosis and therapy of glaucoma. Many studies have confirmed that most tonometry, including Goldmann applanation tonometry, are influenced by central corneal thickness (CCT) and CCT varies greatly among the general population. As a result, the measurement of CCT has a great implication in management of glaucoma. Further, CCT is confirmed a risk factor for progression from ocular hypertension to primary open angle glaucoma. The idea of that CCT may bear an inverse relation with the risk for developing glaucoma damage is in debating. Many specialists bring forward that CCT measurement should be one of the regular examinations in treatment of glaucoma patients.
