BACKGROUND: The impact of dynamic changes in the degree of atherosclerosis on the development of prediabetes remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between cumulative atherogenic index of plasma (CumAIP) exposure during follow-up and the development of prediabetes in middle-aged and elderly individuals. METHODS: A total of 2,939 prediabetic participants from the first wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were included. The outcomes for these patients, including progression to diabetes and regression to normal fasting glucose (NFG), were determined using data from the third wave. CumAIP was calculated as the ratio of the average AIP values measured during the first and third waves to the total exposure duration. The association between CumAIP and the development of prediabetes was analyzed using multivariable Cox regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression. RESULTS: During a median follow-up period of 3 years, 15.21% of prediabetic patients progressed to diabetes, and 22.12% regressed to NFG. Among the groups categorized by CumAIP quartiles, the proportion of prediabetes progressing to diabetes gradually increased (Q1: 10.61%, Q2: 13.62%, Q3: 15.65%, Q4: 20.95%), while the proportion regressing to NFG gradually decreased (Q1: 23.54%, Q2: 23.71%, Q3: 22.18%, Q4: 19.05%). Multivariable-adjusted Cox regression showed a significant positive linear correlation between high CumAIP exposure and prediabetes progression, and a significant negative linear correlation with prediabetes regression. Furthermore, in a stratified analysis, it was found that compared to married individuals, those who were unmarried (including separated, divorced, widowed, or never married) had a relatively higher risk of CumAIP-related diabetes. CONCLUSION: CumAIP is closely associated with the development of prediabetes. High CumAIP exposure not only increases the risk of prediabetes progression but also hinders its regression within a certain range. These findings suggest that monitoring and maintaining appropriate AIP levels may help prevent the deterioration of blood glucose levels.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of osteoarthritis (OA) is increasing, yet its pathogenesis remains largely unknown. Recent studies suggest that abnormal subchondral bone remodeling plays a crucial role in OA development, highlighting a gap in clinical treatments targeting this aspect. Soybean Isoflavone (SI) has shown potential in treating OA, although its mechanisms are not fully understood. METHODS: This research investigated the effects of SI on subchondral bone remodeling in an OA rat model, assessing joint damage, OARSI scores, and type H vessel formation (CD31hiEmcnhi expression). Additionally, the expression of ALP, OCN, BMP, and TSC1 was evaluated to determine involvement of the mTORC1 pathway. In vitro studies on IL-1ß-induced osteoblasts further examined the impact of SI on TSC1/mTORC1 signaling and related markers. RESULTS: SI treatment reduced joint damage and OARSI scores in the rat OA model, significantly decreasing CD31hiEmcnhi expression, indicating a reduction in type H vessel formation. SI also downregulated ALP, OCN, and BMP expression while upregulating TSC1, suggesting inhibition of the mTORC1 signaling pathway and VEGF release. In vitro, SI increased TSC1 expression and decreased mTORC1 signaling, VEGF, ALP, OCN, and BMP levels in IL-1ß-induced osteoblasts. CONCLUSION: SI targets the TSC1/mTORC1 signaling pathway to suppress osteoblast activation and VEGF release, inhibiting type H vessel formation and slowing abnormal subchondral bone remodeling. These findings provide a novel therapeutic approach for OA by focusing on subchondral bone remodeling mechanisms.

Global climate change poses challenges to agricultural production and food security. Assessing the adaptive capacity of crop wild relatives to future climate is important for protecting key germplasm resources and breeding new crops. We performed population genomics, genotype-environment association analyses, and genomic offset assessment of Chinese wild rice, Zizania latifolia, a crop wild relative and potential new grain crop, based on 168 individuals from 42 populations. We found two genetic lineages in Z. latifolia, corresponding to the south and north of its range, that diverged during the Late Pleistocene. We also identified lineage-specific positively selected genes associated with flower development and flowering, seed shattering, pathogen defense response and cold tolerance. We further found that populations from southeastern China are the most maladapted to future climate and should be prioritized for conservation. Our findings provide important clues for leveraging existing genetic diversity to identify important germplasm resources and create climate-resilient crops.

Background: Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is a multifactorial disease, the exact causes of which are still unknown. Environmental, maternal, and genetic factors have been shown to contribute to this condition. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of mutations in the ANXA4 gene in patients with RSA. Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from 325 patients with RSA and 941 control women with a normal reproductive history for whole-exome sequencing (WES). The detected variants were annotated and filtered, and the pathogenicity of the variants was predicted through the SIFT online tool, functional enrichment analyses, Sanger sequencing validation, prediction of changes in protein structure, and evolutionary conservation analysis. Furthermore, plasmid construction, Western blotting, RT-qPCR, and cell migration, invasion and adhesion assays were used to detect the effects of ANXA4 mutations on protein function. Results: An ANXA4 mutation (p.G8D) in 1 of the 325 samples from patients with RSA (RSA-219) was identified through WES. This mutation was not detected in 941 controls or included in public databases. Evolutionary conservation analysis revealed that the amino acid residue affected by the mutation (p.G8D) was highly conserved among 13 vertebrate species, and the SIFT program and structural modeling analysis predicted that this mutation was harmful. Furthermore, functional assays revealed that this mutation could inhibit cell migration, invasion and adhesion. Conclusion: Our study suggests that an unreported novel ANXA4 mutation (p.G8D) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of RSA and may contribute to the genetic diagnosis of RSA.

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an essential neurotransmitter hydrolase, is targeted by organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides, and its number varies among species. In Aleuroglyphus ovatus, a pest mite that endangers health and economy, Aoace1 and Aoace2 have been identified encoding 590 and 460 amino acids, respectively, with characteristic structures, including catalytic triads, oxyanion holes, acyl pockets, peripheral anion, and catalytic anion sites. Phylogenetic analysis reveals distinct clusters for each gene. Expression patterns indicate that Aoace1 predominates in eggs, while Aoace2 is substantially expressed in adults. Experiments on the response of the Aoace genes to phoxim and natural pyrethrins showed that except for the Aoace2 gene responded to natural pyrethrins, all the experimental groups showed a significant increase at LC30 agent concentration. RNA interference with Aoace1 and Aoace2 significantly reduced AChE activity, and increased mortality with LC30 concentrations of phoxim by 15.8 % and 31.5 %, while increased mortality with LC30 concentrations of natural pyrethrins by 43.4 % and 40.4 %, respectively. Knockdown of ace gene significantly decreased fecundity and vitellogenin gene expression. These findings suggest that Aoace1 and Aoace2 are involved in cholinergic and non-cholinergic functions, with Aoace2 being more influential, offering new insights for A. ovatus control strategies.

BACKGROUND: The Clínica Universidad de Navarra-Body Adiposity Estimator (CUN-BAE) Index, serves as an effective tool for evaluating body fat (BF) levels. This research seeks to clarify the association between the CUN-BAE Index and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) from a gender perspective. METHODS: The study utilized data from a comprehensive health assessment initiative known as "Human Dock", involving 14,251 participants. MASLD was diagnosed using abdominal ultrasound, primarily evaluated based on the following sonographic features: hepatorenal echo contrast, vascular blurring, deep attenuation, liver brightness. First, we evaluated the association of MASLD with the CUN-BAE Index using multivariate logistic regression. Second, we visualized this association and estimated potential threshold effect points using the restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression model. Ultimately, we evaluated the ability of the CUN-BAE Index to detect MASLD through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS: The female-to-male ratio was 1:1.08, with a MASLD prevalence rate of 17.59%. Following the adjustment for confounding variables, an increase of one unit in the CUN-BAE Index corresponded to a 14% increase in the risk of MASLD for males and an 18% increase for females. RCS analysis revealed an S-shaped relationship between MASLD prevalence and the CUN-BAE Index for both genders, with potential threshold effect points at approximately 30 in females and 15 in males. Beyond these threshold points, the prevalence of MASLD increased rapidly. Further subgroup analyses indicated significant differences in the relationship of the CUN-BAE Index with MASLD within age and body mass index (BMI) subgroups in females, with a stronger association observed in younger and non-obese female participants. Additionally, ROC analysis revealed that the CUN-BAE Index possesses a strong ability to distinguish MASLD in both genders, especially in females. CONCLUSIONS: This research is the first to identify a positive relationship between the CUN-BAE Index and MASLD. The CUN-BAE Index appears to be more suitable for early screening of MASLD in females.

A bottleneck characterized by high strain and low hysteresis has constantly existed in the design process of piezoelectric actuators. In order to solve the problem that actuator materials cannot simultaneously exhibit large strain and low hysteresis under relatively high electric fields, Nb5+-doped 0.975(Ba0.85Ca0.15)[(Zr0.1Ti0.9)0.999Nb0.001]O3-0.025(Bi0.5Na0.5)ZrO3 (BCZTNb0.001-0.025BiNZ) ceramic thick films were prepared by a film scraping process combined with a solid-state twin crystal method, and the influence of sintering temperature was studied systematically. All BCZTNb0.001-0.025BiNZ ceramic thick films sintered at different sintering temperatures have a pure perovskite structure with multiphase coexistence, dense microstructure and typical dielectric relaxation behavior. The conduction mechanism of all samples at high temperatures is dominated by oxygen vacancies confirmed by linear fitting using the Arrhenius law. As the sintering temperature elevates, the grain size increases, inducing the improvement of dielectric, ferroelectric and field-induced strain performance. The 1325 °C sintered BCZTNb0.001-0.025BiNZ ceramic thick film has the lowest hysteresis (1.34%) and relatively large unipolar strain (0.104%) at 60 kV/cm, showing relatively large strain and nearly zero strain hysteresis compared with most previously reported lead-free piezoelectric ceramics and presenting favorable application prospects in the actuator field.

Pectin-chitosan hydrogels with blends of low (50-190 kDa) and medium (310-395 KDa) molecular weight (MW) chitosan (LC and MC, respectively) were developed, and their characteristics were investigated before and after the encapsulation of an aqueous strawberry extract. The pectin to total chitosan mass ratio, the composition of the strawberry extract and the MW of chitosan greatly affected the interactions between pectin and chitosan at different pH values. More specifically, blends of low and medium MW chitosan improved the stability of the strawberry-gels in acidic conditions compared to their corresponding MC-gels, showed better flow and texture profiles, as well as slower release of phenolic compounds during in vitro digestion compared to the only stable LC-gel. Therefore, by manipulating the length range of chitosan chains would allow the formation of pectin-chitosan hydrogels with improved properties for the development of functional food products.

Persistent excessive inflammation caused by neutrophil and macrophage dysfunction in the wound bed leads to refractory response during wound healing. However, previous studies using cytokines or drugs often suffer from short half-lives and limited targeting, resulting in unsatisfactory therapeutic effects. Herein, the enucleated mesenchymal stem cell is engineered by aptamer bioorthogonal chemistry to modify the cell membrane and mRNA loading in the cell cytoplasm as a novel delivery vector (Cargocyte) with accurate targeting and sustained cytokine secretion. Cargocytes can successfully reduce NETosis by targeting the nuclear chromatin protein DEK protein with aptamers and sustaining interleukin (IL)-4 expression to overcome the challenges associated with the high cost and short half-life of IL-4 protein and significantly prevent the transition of macrophages into the M1 phenotype. Therapeutic effects have been demonstrated in murine and porcine wound models and have powerful potential to improve wound immune microenvironments effectively. Overall, the use of engineered enucleated mesenchymal stem cells as a delivery system may be a promising approach for wound healing.

The first-order antisymmetric (A1) mode lamb wave resonator (LWR) based on Z-cut LiNbO3 thin films has attracted significant attention and is widely believed to be a candidate for next-generation reconfigurable filters with high frequency and large bandwidth (BW). However, it is challenging for traditional interdigitated electrodes (IDTs) based LWR filters to meet the requirement of a clean frequency spectrum response and enough out-of-band (OoB) rejection. To solve the problem, we propose LWRs with checker-shaped IDTs for the design of filters that meet the Wi-Fi 6E standard. By taking advantage of checker-shaped IDTs with unparalleled boundaries, the fabricated 6-GHz resonators successfully suppress higher-order A1 spurious modes, demonstrating a spurious-free impedance response and a high figure-of-merit (FOM) up to 104. Based on the demonstrated checker-shaped electrode design, the filter features a center frequency (f0) of more than 6 GHz, a 3 dB BW exceeding 620 MHz, and an excellent OoB rejection >25 dB, consistent with the acoustic-electric-electromagnetic (EM) multi-physics simulations. Furthermore, through the capacitance-inductance matching network technology, the filter's voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is successfully reduced below 2, showing an excellent 50 Ω impedance matching. This study lays a foundation for ultra-high-frequency and ultra-wideband filters for the Wi-Fi 6/6E application.

White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) hold significant promise in illumination and displays, but achieving high efficiency while maintaining stability is an ongoing challenge. Here, we strategically combine a blue donor-acceptor thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter featuring rapid reverse intersystem crossing rate and a yellow multi-resonance TADF emitter renowned for the fast radiative transition process to achieve warm WOLEDs with exceptional power efficiency exceeding 190 lm W-1 and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 39%, setting records for WOLEDs. Meanwhile, these devices also exhibit an extended operational lifetime (LT80) of 446 h at an initial luminance of 1000 cd m-2. Another group of blue and yellow emitters based on our strategy achieves a standard white emission and a high EQE of 35.6%, confirming the universality of our strategy. This work presents a versatile strategy to harmonize singlet exciton radiation and triplet exciton up-conversion, thus achieving a win-win situation of efficiency and stability.

Patients with preimplantation embryo arrest (PREMBA) often experience assisted reproductive failure primarily due to the lack of transferable embryos, and the molecular mechanisms underlying PREMBA remain unclear. In our study, the embryos from five women with recurrent preimplantation embryo arrest and three women with tubal factor infertility were used for single-embryo transcriptome sequencing. Meanwhile, the transcriptomes of normal human preimplantation embryos obtained from GSE36552 were utilized to perform a comparative analysis with the transcriptomes of PREMBA embryos. Our results showed dysregulation of the cell cycle phase transition might be a potential pathogenic factor contributing to PREMBA. Through integrated analysis of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), we identified a number of hub genes using the protein-protein interaction network. The top 5 hub genes were as follows: CCNB2, BUB1B, CDC25A, CCNB3, and PLK3. The expression of hub genes was validated in PREMBA embryos and donated embryos using RT-qPCR. The knockdown of Ccnb2 in mouse zygotes led to an increase in embryo fragmentation, a rise in apoptosis, and a reduction in blastocyst formation. Furthermore, silencing the expression of CDC25A in HEK293T cells resulted in a decrease in cell proliferation and an increase in apoptosis, providing further support for our findings. Our findings could predict the development outcomes of preimplantation embryos and be used as potential therapeutic targets to prevent recurrent failures of IVF/ICSI attempts.

Multi-resonance (MR) type emitters have emerged as highly promising candidates for high-resolution organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emissions with simultaneous short excited state lifetimes and ultrapure blue color (a CIEy close to 0.046 and an emission peak > 440 nm) have rarely been obtained for MR emitters. Herein, we report a design of dual gold-coordinated MR molecules to achieve efficient and short-lived ultrapure blue TADF emission. The dinuclear Au(I) complex, namely iPrAuBN, shows a narrowband deep-blue emission with a peak maximum of 448 nm and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 29 nm in doped film. The coordination with two Au atoms significantly shortens the delayed fluorescence lifetime to 7.8 µs in comparing with 60.6 µs for the organic analogue. Solution-processed OLED doped with iPrAuBN demonstrates an ultrapure blue electroluminescence with a peak maximum of 442 nm, a FWHM of 19 nm, Commission International de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.154, 0.036), and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 14.8%.

The escalating energy and environmental challenges have catalyzed a global shift toward seeking more sustainable, economical, and eco-friendly energy solutions. Water, capturing 35% of the Earth's solar energy, represents a vast reservoir of clean energy. However, current industrial capabilities harness only a fraction of the energy within the hydrological cycle. The past decade has seen rapid advancements in nanoscience and nanomaterials leading to a comprehensive exploration of liquid-solid triboelectrification as a low-carbon, efficient method for water energy harvesting. This review explores two fundamental principle models involved in liquid-solid triboelectrification. On the basis of these models, two distinct types of water energy harvesting devices, including droplet-based nanogenerators and water evaporation-induced nanogenerators, are summarized from their working principles, recent developments, materials, structures, and performance optimization techniques. Additionally, the applications of these nanogenerators in energy harvesting, self-powered sensing, and healthcare are also discussed. Ultimately, the challenges and future prospects of liquid-solid triboelectrification are further explored.

Developing high-performance Pt-based catalysts with low Pt loading is crucial but challenging for CO oxidation at temperatures below 100 °C. Herein, we report a Pt-based catalyst with only a 0.15 wt% Pt loading, which consists of Pt-Ti intermetallic single-atom alloy (ISAA) and Pt nanoparticles (NP) co-supported on a defective TiO2 support, achieving a record high turnover frequency of 11.59 s-1 at 80 °C and complete conversion of CO at 120 °C. This is because the coexistence of Pt-Ti ISAA and Pt NP significantly alleviates the competitive adsorption of CO and O2, enhancing the activation of O2. Furthermore, Pt single atom sites are stabilized by Pt-Ti ISAA, resulting in distortion of the TiO2 lattice within Pt-Ti ISAA. This distortion activates the neighboring surface lattice oxygen, allowing for the simultaneous occurrence of the Mars-van Krevelen and Langmuir-Hinshelwood reaction paths at low temperatures.

The microorganism in rhizosphere systems has the potential to regulate the migration of arsenic (As) in coastal tidal flat wetlands. This study investigates the microbial community in the iron plaque and rhizosphere soils of Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) and Suaeda salsa (S. salsa), as two common coastal tidal flat wetland plants in China, and determines the impact of the As and Fe redox bacteria on As mobility using field sampling and 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing. The results indicated that As bound to crystalline Fe in the Fe plaque of S. salsa in high tidal flat. In the Fe plaque, there was a decrease in the presence of Fe redox bacteria, while the presence of As redox bacteria increased. Thus, the formation of Fe plaque proved advantageous in promoting the growth of As redox bacteria, thereby aiding in the mobility of As from rhizosphere soils to the Fe plaque. As content in the Fe plaque and rhizosphere soils of S. alterniflora was found to be higher than that of S. salsa. In the Fe plaque, As/Fe-reducing bacteria in S. alterniflora, and As/Fe-oxidizing bacteria in S. salsa significantly affected the distribution of As in rhizosphere systems. S. alterniflora has the potential to be utilized for wetland remediation purposes.

Dandelion (Taraxacum genus), a perennial herb belonging to the Asteraceae family is widely distributed in hillside grasslands, roadsides, fields, and river beaches in middle and low-altitude areas. It has a long history of traditional Chinese medicine usage as a heat-clearing and detoxifying agent, often consumed as tea or vegetable. Multiple pharmacological studies have demonstrated the antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, immune-regulating, antioxidant, anti-tumor, and other effects of the Taraxacum genus. Objective: This study aims to explore the relationship between cardiovascular calcification (CVC) and serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and its subfractions in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods: HD patients and healthy participants were recruited based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Various blood indicators were measured, and demographic information was recorded. HDL-C particle levels were quantified using lipophilic fluorescent dye staining and capillary electrophoresis (microfluidic platform). Coronary artery calcium scores and valve calcification were used to classify HD patients into calcification and non-calcification groups. Results: Compared to healthy participants, HD patients showed a significant increase in HDL-C, high-density lipoprotein 2 cholesterol (HDL2-C), and high-density lipoprotein 3 cholesterol (HDL3-C) levels (p < 0.001). Further division of HD patients into calcification and non-calcification groups revealed higher serum HDL3-C concentrations (p = 0.002) and a higher HDL3-C/HDL-C ratio (p = 0.04) in the calcification group. Additionally, elevated HDL3-C levels were found to be an independent risk factor for CVC in HD patients (p = 0.040). The ROC curve analysis showed an AUC value of 0.706 for HDL3-C (p = 0.002). Conclusion: Our study indicates that elevated serum HDL3-C levels in HD patients are an independent risk factor for CVC and can serve as a potential predictor for CVC events.
