This study aims to carry out an experience report demonstrating the perception of students of the dentistry course in their participation in the practice of primary health care (PHC), experienced in a pandemic scenario and based on the fight against confrontations and challenges imposed on the work process of family health teams. This study is an experience report, descriptive and retrospective, associated with bibliographical research to bring the necessary theoretical basis for the description of the lived experience report. During the pandemic, the Family Health Team played an important role and acted in the line of prevention and control of this, being one of the greatest support tools. In dentistry, the performance of the oral health team, due to risk factors inherent to this type of occupation, was limited in its exercise. The knowledge of many public health professionals was questioned, as well as their experience, limitations and fear of contracting the disease. Health team professionals showed that interprofessional work and a good relationship increased team incentive and responsibility.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the National Tobacco Control Program (PNCT) in Mato Grosso do Sul, coverage rates, dropout, cessation, use of medication, the health services network and the reasons why Family Health Teams in Campo Grande have not yet joined the program. Methods: This was a descriptive study with a quantitative approach, based on primary and secondary data on the PNCT in Mato Grosso do Sul. The primary data were obtained by means of a questionnaire administered to Family Health Teams (ESF) in Campo Grande, which did not offer the program and evaluated the frequency and presence of correlation between the variables analyzed using Cramer's V test and the χ2 test. The secondary data were obtained from the consolidated records of the José Alencar Gomes da Silva National Cancer Institute with the records produced by the services. Results: The rates of adherence, effectiveness and pharmacological support in the capital and interior were: 66.80 and 59.79%; 20.58 and 34.91%; and 32.14 and 99.86%, respectively. The program was offered in 49.37% of the municipalities and 43.85% of the Basic Health Units (UBS) estimated. There were correlations between being trained and implementing the program and entry training and provision in the UBS. The difficulties reported by professionals were the COVID-19 pandemic, overload and/or a small team and/or lack of time and the absence of training.

Introduction: Terminality is a situation increasingly experienced in healthcare services due to the progression of the population's life expectancy and, consequently, the increase in patients with serious chronic diseases. In Brazil, Palliative Care services are still centralized in tertiary care services. However, in many countries, Primary Health Care has been the major provider and coordinator of Palliative Care for users, in favor of decentralizing this assistance and promoting comprehensive care. Objective: To carry out a narrative literature review to identify the relationship of Family Practice Doctors in the performance of Palliative Care in Primary Health Care. Methods: Bibliographic review through access to databases: CAPES, LILACS, SciELO, and PUBMED. Sixteen articles were selected, which were submitted to thematic analysis and subsequent discussion of the main characteristics that contribute to the greater performance of Family Practice Doctors in Palliative Care. Results: The importance of Family Practice Doctors in Palliative Care within the scope of Primary Health Care was observed, as well as the interconnection between the two specialties, the challenges along this path, and the benefits of this practice. Conclusions: The offer of Palliative Care by Family Practice Physicians in Primary Care favors the access and monitoring of patients. However, the performance of the professionals in Family Health Teams in this line of care is still insufficient due to the lack of training in the area.

As ferramentas aplicadas foram o genograma, ecomapa, Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Outcome (FIRO), problem, roles, affect, communication, time in life, illness, coping with stress, environment/ecology (PRACTICE) e ciclo de vida familiar.

Problem: Intervention experience of a multidisciplinary team of the Family Health Strategy (ESF) through family approach tools. Among the problems identified in the case are the work overload of the index patient, diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in her children, husband's chronic alcoholism and hostile relationship within the family circle. Method: Descriptive and qualitative experience report. Developed by an ESF team in a family in the coverage area. Experience conducted in the second half of 2019. The tools applied were the genogram, ecomap, FIRO, PRACTICE and the family life cycle. The tools were chosen because of the index patient's frequent use of the ESF's services. Results: Through the application of the tools, the structures and ways of sharing family relationships, the health problems, the possible bonds identified and the stage in the life cycle were identified. As modes of intervention, the team proposed health care consultations, psychological assistance and qualified listening. In addition, through intersectional meetings, a school problem that affected the patient's health condition was solved. Conclusion: The application of the tools was an excellent method to carry out the study. It allowed a global view of the family, in addition to identifying weaknesses to be corrected or minimized, through interventions by the health team.

Introduction: Knowledge of the magnitude to which the population implements protective measures issued by public health authorities is essential in preventing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The effectiveness of non-pharmacological prevention measures (NPM) and public policies aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19 depends on how well individuals are informed about the consequences of the infection and the measures they must adopt to reduce its spread. The understanding, attitudes, and practices of people in relation to COVID-19 and its prevention are fundamental for understanding the epidemiological dynamics, demanding research on compliance with NPM to prevent contagion in different territories. To this end, in 2020, NPM against COVID-19 were released by various sources, state and private, for most of the Brazilian population, with the aim of guiding behaviors to contain the health crisis. The Family Health Strategy (FHS) teams play a key role in this health education process, as they comprise sociocultural elements of their communities, reaching them both in capillarity and in local adequacy of technical-scientific information. This article covers field research, part of a national multicenter project. Objective: To evaluate whether the population of the territory of an FHS unit in the city of Condado, Pernambuco, understands and applies the information it received about NPM prevention in their practices to protect against COVID-19. More specifically, the research aimed to determine what information was received by the respondents, what are their sources, the degree of reliability attributed to these, in addition to their adherence to the NPM and their relationship with sociodemographic variables. Methods: The study model was observational and descriptive, with a quantitative approach, based on the collection of primary data with 70 users through face-to-face interviews with a structured questionnaire. Results: The results showed that the population received extensive information on disease prevention. Conclusion: With varying levels of reliability of the sources, attributing relevant importance to prevention measures and adopted most of them, with the exception of total social isolation.

BACKGROUND: Existing research has examined the link between family health and mental health outcomes like depression and anxiety, but the mechanisms are unclear. Sleep quality may play a mediating role, and the effects of family health on mental health can differ based on living arrangements, which influence experiences and social support. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of sleep quality in the relationship between family health and depression or anxiety across diverse living statuses. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted from June to September 2023 in five regions of China, including Guangdong Province, Guangxi Province, Jiangsu Province, Sichuan Province, and Macao Special Administrative Region. Family health was assessed using the Short Form of the Family Health Scale, while sleep quality was measured using the Self-Rating Scale of Sleep. Depression and anxiety were evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Mediation analysis was conducted to examine the mediating effect of sleep quality on the relationship between family health and mental health outcomes. Subgroup analyses were conducted to explore potential variations in the mediating role of sleep quality across different living status. RESULTS: This study sample comprised 4918 participants, with a mean age of 30.1 years (SD = 12.6). The direct effect analysis demonstrated a significant negative correlation between family health and symptoms of depression (ß = -0.216, p < 0.001) or anxiety (ß = -0.199, p < 0.001). The mediation analysis results revealed that family health had a significant indirect effect on symptoms of depression (ß = -0.040, p < 0.001) or anxiety (ß = -0.050, p < 0.001) through sleep quality. Specifically, both the living with family group and the living in a shared accommodation group showed a significant mediation effect of sleep quality in the relationship between family health and mental health outcomes. However, the living alone group did not show a significant mediation role. CONCLUSIONS: Sleep quality mediated the relationship between family health and symptoms of depression or anxiety, with significant effects in those living with family or in shared accommodations, but not those living alone. These findings underscore the importance of considering living status when examining mental health outcomes and developing interventions.

RESUMEN

AIM: To explore the existential lived experiences of parents of children and young people with complex care needs. DESIGN: An explorative qualitative design. METHODS: We conducted 16 in-depth interviews with parents of children and young people with complex care needs across Norway from February to May 2022. Data collection and analysis were guided by the theoretical framework of van Manen's phenomenology of practice approach. RESULTS: Four distinct but interwoven themes reflecting the comprehensive and holistic nature of parents' existential lived experiences emerged: lived body: "I am forever changed"; lived space: Seeking sanctuary; lived time: "Time doesn't seem to exist"; and lived self-other: Parents' changing relationships. CONCLUSIONS: Parents' ongoing efforts to manage fluctuations in their daily lives profoundly affect the existential aspects of their well-being, suggesting that respectful and attentive nurse-parent relationships can nurture existential growth. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND PATIENT CARE: There is a crucial need for a genuine nursing presence characterised by an attitude of open sensitivity and attentive listening to parents' existential experiences. Nurses should embrace the opportunity to engage in respectful and attentive dialogues with parents. Acknowledging that the insights emerging from these conversations can improve integrated and personalised nursing services worldwide. IMPACT: Parents of children and young people with complex care needs often experience suboptimal healthcare. Additionally, access to quality healthcare services, particularly in rural areas, is limited, creating inefficiencies and coordination challenges. This study provides nurses, other health care professionals, researchers, and decision-makers with valuable perspectives on supporting parents' existential needs which may significantly impact their overall well-being and coping abilities, contributing to a more compassionate approach to family care. REPORTING METHOD: Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ). PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Parents of children and young people with complex care needs provided valuable feedback on the findings and implications of this work.

RESUMEN

Background: Family planning (FP) services are pivotal in assessing a country's healthcare efficacy. Despite India's strides in FP promotion, disparities persist in its utilization rates. This study analyzes Karnataka's FP trends by using National Family Health Survey (NFHS) rounds 4 and 5, comparing its indicators with national averages. Methods: A retrospective record review-based descriptive study design was employed. Data from NFHS-4 (2015-16) and NFHS-5 (2019-21) were analyzed using MS Excel 365. Key variables included age at marriage, total fertility rate (TFR), and various contraceptive methods. Results: Karnataka exhibited a stable rate of early marriages for women and a decline among men aged 25-29 years. TFR in Karnataka slightly decreased, with increased contraceptive usage and significant growth in modern contraceptive methods. However, male sterilization rates remained low. There was an improvement in health workers' engagement with female non-users and in providing information on contraceptive side effects. Conclusion: While Karnataka has progressed in FP, challenges such as early marriages persist. Enhancing integration, leveraging technology, and empowering women are essential for comprehensive FP services in India.

RESUMEN

Context: Miscarriage is the most distressing complication in early pregnancy, with one in every five pregnant women ending in a miscarriage, and its causes are multifactorial. Aim: This study aimed to find the risk and protective factors of miscarriage among women aged 15-49 years in India by using the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) data. Methods and Material: The data were taken from NFHS-5; 53,560 women aged 15-49 years who had reported either a miscarriage (n = 5104) or livebirth (n = 48,456) during the last 12 months preceding the survey were included in the study. Statistical Analysis Used: Various sociodemographic, lifestyle, comorbid, and fertility-related factors were considered in the Poisson regression analysis, and adjusted prevalence ratios were obtained. Results: Significant sociodemographic risk factors were age less than 20 years or more than 34 years, urban residence, primary and higher education levels, wealth index middle and above, and occupation as employed. Muslim religion, Scheduled Tribe, and Other Backward Class castes were statistically significant protective factors. Obesity, severe anemia, hypertension, and thyroid disorder were the significant comorbid risk factors, whereas tobacco chewing was the only significant lifestyle risk factor. A higher number of ever-born children was the fertility-related risk factor, whereas the use of intrauterine devices was a significant protective factor for miscarriage. Conclusions: To reduce the incidence of miscarriage in developing countries like India, the respective governments and healthcare providers should develop intervention programs targeting women in well-educated and high-income families.

RESUMEN

Primary Health Centers have been a critical component of India's healthcare landscape, designed to provide accessible and affordable medical services. However, the term "Primary Health Center" may not adequately convey the comprehensive and family-centered approach that modern healthcare necessitates. Changing the terminology of "Primary Health Center" to "Family Health Center" represents a strategic move toward strengthening public health services in India. This change embodies a commitment to holistic family-centered care, integrated health services, and community engagement. By emphasizing the importance of families in health care, this initiative can help address the diverse health needs of the population and improve health outcomes across communities.

RESUMEN

Background: Trans and/or non-binary parents experience structural exclusion in family healthcare and there is a need for specialist training for healthcare professionals so that they are able to create a gender inclusive environment. Aim: As part of a continued effort to address health inequity this study explores the body experiences of infant feeding within trans and non binary communities. Method: Semi structured interviews were conducted with seven trans or non-binary parents, based in the United Kingdom, who have experienced chestfeeding or breastfeeding. Results: A reflexive thematic analysis was utlitised to identify three main themes which centered around baby, body and support in health care settings. Parents were informed of the benefits of their milk and were strongly motivated by their child's needs. However, body feeding was emotionally and physically challenging. Conclusion: Person-centered care with consistent attention to language is required when supporting lactation.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: A healthy family is very important for community health. This study was conducted to test the validity and reliability of the short and long forms of the Family Health Scale (FHS) in Turkish culture. DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a cross-cultural adaptation and validation of instruments using a methodological approach. A total of 783 individuals aged between 18 and 65 from Turkey. The test-retest reliability analysis of FHS was performed with 64 participants after four weeks. RESULTS: Confirmed that the long form of the FHS was four-dimensional and the short form was one-dimensional. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis showed that the long and short forms fit well with the data, and it was determined that all fit indices were within acceptable limits. The Cronbach alpha of the long form of the FHS was 0.911, the cronbach alphas of the four sub-dimensions ranged from 0.833 to 0.908, and short form was 0.872. The pearson correlation coefficient between the forms was 0.919 (p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study revealed that the FHS is a valid and reliable measurement tool that can be used specifically for Turkish society. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Nurses can use both forms of the FHS to examine family health and trends in family health in the population they serve. The FHS may be an important screening tool in health care settings and family intervention programs. Nurses can use FHS when providing health care so that children grow up in a healthy family.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Burdening health and illness issues such as physical or mental illnesses, accidents, disabilities, and life events such as birth or death influence the health and functioning of families and contribute to the complexity of care and health care costs. Considerable research has confirmed the benefits of a family systems-centered care approach for patients, family caregivers, families, and health care professionals. However, health care professionals face barriers in working with families, such as feeling unprepared. Family systems-centered therapeutic conversations support families' day-to-day coping, resilience, and health. A family systems care unit (FSCU) was recently established as a real-life laboratory at one of the Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences. In this unit, health care professionals offer therapeutic conversations to families and individual family members to support daily symptom management and functioning, soften suffering, and increase health and well-being. These conversations are observed in real time through a 1-way window by other health care professionals, students, and trainees and are recorded with video for research and education. Little is known about how therapeutic conversations contribute to meaningful changes in burdened families and the benefits of vicarious learning in a real-life laboratory setting for family systems care. OBJECTIVE: In this research program, we aim to deepen our understanding of how therapeutic conversations support families and individuals experiencing burdening health and illness issues and how the FSCU laboratory setting supports the learning of students, clinical trainees, and health care professionals. METHODS: Here we apply a transformational action research design, including parallel and subsequent substudies, to advance knowledge and practice in family systems care. Qualitative multiple-case study designs will be used to explore the benefits of therapeutic conversations by analyzing recordings of the therapeutic conversations. The learning processes of students, trainees, and professionals will be investigated with descriptive qualitative study designs based on single and focus group interviews. The data will be analyzed with established coding methods. RESULTS: Therapeutic conversations have been investigated in 3 single-case studies, each involving a sequence of 3 therapeutic conversation units. Data collection regarding the second research question is planned. CONCLUSIONS: Preliminary results confirm the therapeutic conversations to support families' coping. This renders the FSCU a setting for ethically sensitive research. This program will not only support the health and well-being of families, but also contribute to relieving the financial and workforce burdens in the health and social care system. RESUMEN

Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) mothers with young children face multiple inequities in accessing primary health services, such as language barriers, social isolation, low health literacy, and the availability of appropriate interpretation services. These inequities are persistent and indicate that child and family health nurse (CFHN) services, the providers of primary healthcare in many developed countries, require better support to address the needs of these families. This study engaged with CFHNs and healthcare interpreters to co-design a model of support for practice using workshops that included individual and collective brainstorming and visual representations. Transcripts of the discussion were analysed using thematic analysis. CFHNs and interpreters were able to articulate their perfect service model: a central multidisciplinary team of CFHNs, interpreters, and bilingual educators who could facilitate nurse-interpreter and nurse-interpreter-client relationships, allowing CFHNs and interpreters to do their jobs properly. This central structural component would support and be supported by rapport, trust, client choice and access, continuity of care, and cultural comfort. The study concluded that CALD mothers' access and engagement require CFHNs to have support for their cultural comfort through the mechanism of bilingual educators and the expansion of healthcare interpreters' role and scope in working with CFHNs in the delivery of services.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Despite the implementation of various preventive measures, India continues to experience an alarmingly high under-five mortality rate (U5MR). The most recent nationwide data on U5MRs has provided an opportunity to re-examine the associated factors of U5MRs using advanced techniques. This study attempted to identify the associated determinants of U5MRs via the generalised additive Cox proportional hazards method. METHODS: This study analysed the fifth round of unit-level data for 213,612 children from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) to identify the risk factors associated with U5MRs, employing a generalised additive Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. RESULTS: The children who had a length of pregnancy of less than 9 months had a 2.621 (95% CI: 2.494, 2.755) times greater hazard of U5MRs than the children who had a gestational period of 9 months or more. The non-linear association with U5MRs was highest in the mother's age, followed by the mother's haemoglobin, the mother's education, and household wealth score. The relationships between the mother's age and the mother's haemoglobin level with the U5MR were found to be U-shaped. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the importance of addressing maternal and socioeconomic factors while improving access to healthcare services in order to reduce U5MRs in India. Furthermore, the findings underscore the necessity for more sophisticated approaches to healthcare delivery that consider the non-linear relationships between predictor variables and U5MRs.

RESUMEN

The health of road transport workers is affected by working conditions and life. However, there is a lack of studies on the level of stress and health of the families of these workers. This study aimed to evaluate the perceived stress level and family effectiveness of family members of road transport workers. A quantitative study was carried out with the family members of road transport workers in the southern region of Brazil. For data collection, a sociodemographic form, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Evaluation of Family Effectiveness Strategies were used. The data were analyzed by simple frequency, Spearman correlation coefficient (ρ) (p < 0.05), and descriptive analysis from the perspective of Systemic Organization. The sample was composed of 49 family members of road transport workers. Perceived stress was higher in family members who had more than nine years of education (p = 0.0403). Family members who scored higher in Family Effectiveness scored high on the targets of Control (p = 0.0353) (Control aims to reduce anxiety and prevent and eliminate events that threaten family stability) and Growth (p = 0.0360) (represented by attitudes that promote new roles in response to critical situations experienced by families, which require re-adaptation processes and adjustments). The Control target was significant (p = 0.0353) in families that had more than three people. The Coherence dimension (concerning self-esteem, body image, personal identity, self-confidence, and sexual identity) presented positive significance (p = 0.0244) in families with health problems and whose income was less than USD 792.00 per month (p = 0.0072). The Individuation dimension (including functions and responsibilities, where talents are reinforced, as well as initiatives that allow for the incorporation of knowledge to assume behaviors against personal/family and environmental pressures), was significant (p = 0.0138) in families with incomes over USD 792.00. The Maintenance System (strategies for decision-making, problem negotiation, ritual and traditional roles, communication patterns, standards, financial management, and approaches to maintaining family harmony) presented positive significance (p = 0.0151) in families where drivers worked as intercity drivers, as did the Stability target (p = 0.0196) (concerning the continuity of routines, structure, organization, traditions, and values assumed by the family and transmitted from generation to generation, which promote unity and the development of values, attitudes, and beliefs). In conclusion, social factors, such as education, income, diseases, type of worker activity in road transport, and number of people in the family, influenced perceived stress and family effectiveness, which demonstrates the need to increase the promotion of health care for the families of road transport workers.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Immunization is a key component of primary health care and an indisputable human right. Vaccines are critical to the prevention and control of infectious disease outbreaks. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and associated disruptions over the past two years have strained the health systems, with many children missing out on essential childhood vaccines. AIM: To evaluate the immunization coverage among 12-23-month-old children in the rural areas of Community Health Centre (CHC) Dighal and to determine the factors influencing the existing immunization coverage. METHODS: A coverage evaluation survey was conducted according to the 30-cluster sampling technique, which is the standard methodology for such surveys devised by World Health Organization. A total of 300 children aged 12-23 months were included, whose immunization details were noted from their immunization cards. RESULTS: Full immunization rate was noted in 86.7% of the children, with partial and non-immunized children accounting for 9% and 4.3% respectively. The full immunization dropout rate was 4.2%. The common reasons for partial or non-immunization were family problem including illness of mother, vaccine not being available and child being ill. Place of birth (P = 0.014) and availability of immunization card (P < 0.001) were significant predictors of the immunization status. Since the study was conducted in 2020/2021, health services were disrupted due to the COVID-19 lockdown. CONCLUSION: Due to the coverage being higher than the national average, it was concluded that the immunization coverage was optimal and not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Family health history (FHx) is an important predictor of a person's genetic risk but is not collected by many adults in the United States. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to test and compare the usability, engagement, and report usefulness of 2 web-based methods to collect FHx. METHODS: This mixed methods study compared FHx data collection using a flow-based chatbot (KIT; the curious interactive test) and a form-based method. KIT's design was optimized to reduce user burden. We recruited and randomized individuals from 2 crowdsourced platforms to 1 of the 2 FHx methods. All participants were asked to complete a questionnaire to assess the method's usability, the usefulness of a report summarizing their experience, user-desired chatbot enhancements, and general user experience. Engagement was studied using log data collected by the methods. We used qualitative findings from analyzing free-text comments to supplement the primary quantitative results. RESULTS: Participants randomized to KIT reported higher usability than those randomized to the form, with a mean System Usability Scale score of 80.2 versus 61.9 (P<.001), respectively. The engagement analysis reflected design differences in the onboarding process. KIT users spent less time entering FHx information and reported more conditions than form users (mean 5.90 vs 7.97 min; P=.04; and mean 7.8 vs 10.1 conditions; P=.04). Both KIT and form users somewhat agreed that the report was useful (Likert scale ratings of 4.08 and 4.29, respectively). Among desired enhancements, personalization was the highest-rated feature (188/205, 91.7% rated medium- to high-priority). Qualitative analyses revealed positive and negative characteristics of both KIT and the form-based method. Among respondents randomized to KIT, most indicated it was easy to use and navigate and that they could respond to and understand user prompts. Negative comments addressed KIT's personality, conversational pace, and ability to manage errors. For KIT and form respondents, qualitative results revealed common themes, including a desire for more information about conditions and a mutual appreciation for the multiple-choice button response format. Respondents also said they wanted to report health information beyond KIT's prompts (eg, personal health history) and for KIT to provide more personalized responses. CONCLUSIONS: We showed that KIT provided a usable way to collect FHx. We also identified design considerations to improve chatbot-based FHx data collection: First, the final report summarizing the FHx collection experience should be enhanced to provide more value for patients. Second, the onboarding chatbot prompt may impact data quality and should be carefully considered. Finally, we highlighted several areas that could be improved by moving from a flow-based chatbot to a large language model implementation strategy.

RESUMEN

Background: Physical activity is an essential aspect of living a healthy lifestyle, which offers a myriad of benefits for both the body and the mind. Nonetheless, a family history of obesity can pose significant challenges to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, which is further exacerbated by the academic stress. Individuals who have a role model that prioritizes physical activity are more likely to develop positive and healthy habits in their lives. Objectives: The study aimed to examine how role models affect physical activity and its impact on addressing challenges of family obesity history and academic stress in school children. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2019 to April 2020 in three schools in Amritsar district selected by lottery method of simple random sampling. Out of 4226 students, 355 overweight and obese students were interviewed regarding their physical activity. An informed written assent and consent was taken from the children and guardians respectively. Mothers of 6 to 11-year-old students and students aged 12 to 16 were interviewed using a pre-designed, validated, semi-structured questionnaire. Results: 51.3% had a family history of obesity while 14.9% and 14.6% of parents of overweight students had hypertension and diabetes, respectively. Over half (52.7%) lacked interest in physical activity and almost 33.5% of males were inactive. Students who chose movie actors as role models (71.1%) and those who found their role models' information reliable (83.2%) were more likely to participate in physical activity. Of the 247 students who were knowledgeable about healthy living, a significant majority of 70.4% engaged in physical activity while 76% of overweight/obese students reported academic stress as a barrier. Conclusions: Study shows majority engage in physical activity regardless of gender. Over 70% have family history of obesity and healthy lifestyle knowledge. Stress reduces physical activity and students with movie/sports/fitness role models have better activity levels. Reasons for not engaging included dislike for sports and lack of time.
