RESUMEN

1. Dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) has been used to minimise problems in broiler chickens raised in warm climates. However, there is a need to determine the most appropriate DEB levels in these animals2. This study evaluated the influence of five DEB levels (110, 175, 240, 305 and 370 mEq/kg) on water intake (WI), zootechnical performance (feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio), tibiotarsus bone variables (fresh bone weight, dry bone weight, bone length, mineral matter, Seedor index and bone strength) and intestinal histomorphometry (villus height (VH) and width (VW), crypt height (CH) and width (CW), internal and external muscularis) on broilers in two developmental phases (1-21 and 22-42 d of age). Additionally, the haematological profile (blood count and serum biochemistry), carcass yield, cuts and abdominal fat were assessed.3. Applying 370 mEq/kg DEB increased WI, VW in the jejunum and ileum and number of haemocytes at 21 d, while WI and VW in the duodenum and ileum at 42 d. In contrast, 110 mEq/kg increased chlorine concentrations at 21 d and leukocyte and heterophil numbers at 42 d.4. In summary, the 370 mEq/kg level was the most appropriate for broiler homoeostasis raised under natural heat stress, as the best results were found on WI and VW variables. Therefore, this DEB level was recommended in broilers aged 21 or 42 d.

The study aimed to investigate the impact of wet feeding on broiler chicken performance and intestinal histomorphometry. The research was conducted at the Veterinary College, Udaipur, India, using 144 commercial broiler chicks from day 1 to 6 weeks of age. The chicks were divided randomly into three experimental groups, each with four replicates comprising 48 birds. The control group (G1) was fed dry; while, group 2 (G2) received wet feed supplemented with 1.00 g water per g of feed and group 3 (G3) received wet feed supplemented with 1.20 g water per g of feed. Results revealed that G3 had significantly superior feed conversion ratios, lower feed intake, and increased body weight and weight gain compared to G2 and G1. Among the three treatment groups, there were no variations in blood plasma indicators. In comparison with G1, duodenum and ileum in G2 had higher villus height. The G3 revealed higher net profit margins and 18.89% saving of feed compared to G1, suggesting that it may be a valuable tool for lowering chicken feed costs.

Bone metastases are the most severe and prevalent consequences of prostate cancer (PC), affecting more than 80% of patients with advanced PC. PCBMs generate pain, pathological fractures, and paralysis. As modern therapies increase survival, more patients are suffering from these catastrophic consequences. Radiographically, PCBMs are predominantly osteosclerotic, but the mechanisms of abnormal bone formation and how this pathological increase in bone density is related to fractures are unclear. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis on a cohort of 76 cadaveric PCBM specimens and 12 cancer-free specimens as controls. We used micro-computed tomography to determine 3D organization and quantify bone characteristics, quantitative backscattering electron microscopy to characterize mineral content and details in bone structure, nanoindentation to determine mechanical properties, and histological and immunohistochemical analysis of bone structure and composition. We define 4 PCBM phenotypes: osteolytic, mixed lytic-sclerotic, and 2 subgroups of osteosclerotic lesions-those with residual trabeculae, and others without residual trabeculae. The osteosclerotic lesions are characterized by the presence of abnormal bone accumulated on trabeculae surfaces and within intertrabecular spaces. This abnormal bone is characterized by higher lacunae density, abnormal lacunae morphology, and irregular lacunae orientation. However, mineral content, hardness, and elastic modulus at micron-scale were indistinguishable between this irregular bone and residual trabeculae. The collagen matrix of this abnormal bone presents with irregular organization and a prominent collagen III composition. These characteristics suggest that osteosclerotic PCBMs initiate new bone deposition as woven bone; however, the lack of subsequent bone remodeling, absence of lamellar bone deposition on its surface, and presence of collagen III distinguish this pathologic matrix from conventional woven bone. Although the mineralized matrix retains normal bone hardness and stiffness properties, the lack of fibril anisotropy presents a compromised trabecular structure, which may have clinical implications.

Eagle syndrome is a bone disease where elongation of the styloid process leads to throat and neck pain, and in severe cases neurovascular symptoms such as syncope and neuralgia. The pathophysiology of Eagle syndrome is poorly understood with various theories having been proposed how this elongation is caused. To better understand the pathophysiology, we performed a work-up in 6 patients presenting with Eagle syndrome. Patients mainly presented with pain on turning the neck (100%), foreign body sensation (67%), tension in the neck (67%), and dysphagia (50%). The typical length of the styloid process ranges from 25 to 30 mm; however, [18F]NaF (sodium fluoride) PET/CT showed elongated styloid processes with an average length of 52.1 ± 15.6 mm (mean ± SD) with increased turnover at the base of one of the styloid processes. The removed styloid processes were further examined by histology, micro-CT, quantitative backscatter electron imaging (qBEI), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and circularly polarized light imaging. Histology revealed one case of a fractured styloid process healing through callus formation and one case of pseudarthrosis. Bone mineral density and mineralization was similar in the styloid processes when compared to cortical bone samples derived from the mandibular bone of different patients. Circular polarized light microscopy showed a collagen orientation in the styloid process comparable to the cortical bone samples with a distinct separation of collagen structure between the mineralized structure and the surrounding soft tissue with FTIR analysis demonstrating a typical composition of bone. This altogether suggests that the elongated styloid processes in Eagle syndrome are mature bone, capable of endochondral repair, possibly growing from the base of the process through endochondral ossification, rather than being a form of secondary calcification of the stylohyoid ligament as previously postulated.

PURPOSE: The variable positions of the appendix can mislead surgeons and physicians to a wrong diagnosis. When appendicitis happens in subhepatic caecum, it can be misdiagnosed and can lead to severe complications during surgical procedures. Therefore, this study aimed to understand the histomorphometric development of the appendix and caecum and to identify when lymphoid follicles appear in the appendix during fetal life. METHODS: The study was conducted on a total of 50 fetuses. The caecum and appendix were carefully dissected. Their position and various measurements were observed. Afterwards, the appendix was taken out for histological processing. All three layers, mucosa, submucosa, and muscularis externa were measured using Image Analyzer Software Image Pro Premiere 9.1, and the appearance of lymphoid follicles was also examined. Results were analyzed using SPSS statistical software. RESULTS: During the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimesters the most common caecum type was type 1: as a lengthy tube, type 3: The lateral wall expanded more, thus it has an asymmetric saccule, and type 4: adult-like caecum. The caecum was mostly situated in the right lumbar region in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. In the 1st trimester, it was subhepatic in position. The most common position of the appendix was 11 o'clock in 1st and 3rd trimesters. 2nd trimester's most common position of the appendix was 12 o'clock. The thickness of the mucosa, submucosa, and the muscularis externa increases as the trimester increases. The lymphoid follicles have appeared during the 2nd trimester. CONCLUSION: The knowledge from this study will be useful in the diagnosis and treatment of malformations, pathology, and anomalies of the caecum and appendix due to congenital causes.

The aim of this systematic review was to determine whether autogenous tooth grafting material (ATGM) is as safe and effective as other bone substitutes used for maxillary sinus augmentation procedures, evaluating histomorphometric and/or histological data, implant primary stability, associated complications and radiographic bone height measurements. An automated electronic search was conducted using four databases (Medline/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library), supplemented by a manual search, to identify clinical human studies using particulate ATGM for the aforementioned procedure. The included studies had a sample size of at least four patients and were published before 31st July 2024. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS) and Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist were used to assess the risk of bias in cohort studies and case series, respectively. Seven studies were included in the descriptive analysis, obtaining 128 participants (46.8% only treated with ATGM) and 192 placed implants. Due to the heterogeneity of the studies, meta-analysis could not be performed. The authors concluded that ATGM appears to be a feasible and safe alternative for maxillary sinus augmentation procedures. These results should be interpreted with caution due to the limited amount of scientific evidence on this topic and the heterogeneity between the included studies.

This study aimed to examine the effects of incorporating amaranth (Amaranthus spinosus, either raw or heat-treated) into broiler diets on growth performance, meat antioxidant capacity, haemato-biochemical parameters, intestinal histomorphometry, and cecal volatile fatty acid profile. A total of 210 male Ross 308 broiler chicks were allocated to five dietary treatments in a completely randomized design, with each treatment comprising six replicates of seven birds each. The control group received a diet based on maize and soybean meal, while the remaining dietary groups were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isocaloric to the control, with exact levels of 10% and 20% raw or heat-treated amaranth in the diet. Body weight and feed intake were monitored on days 0, 10, 24, and 39 of the study. On day 39, two birds per replicate were randomly selected for blood sampling, followed by slaughtering for further parameter examination. Incorporating A. spinosus up to 20% in broiler diets had no adverse effect on body weight gain compared to the control. However, higher levels of amaranth led to a negative impact on the feed conversion ratio, attributed to increased feed intake. Furthermore, amaranth supplementation did not negatively influence carcass yield or various organ weights, except for the gizzard, which was heavier in the amaranth-fed groups. Notably, amaranth supplementation reduced abdominal fat, enhanced meat antioxidant status, and had no detrimental effects on blood biochemical or hematological indices. Additionally, amaranth feeding resulted in decreased blood triglyceride levels but had no effect on cholesterol levels. While heat treatment of amaranth did not significantly alter the performance of broiler chickens, it enhanced the beneficial effects of amaranth feeding on the histomorphological features of the duodenum and ileum, and increased blood IgG levels. The cecal volatile fatty acid profile remained largely unaffected by amaranth inclusion, although heat-treated amaranth led to increased levels of branched-chain fatty acids and valerate. Overall, the findings suggest A. spinosus as a promising alternative feed ingredient for broilers when included at 10% of the diet. However, further research is needed to investigate the effect of various amaranth species, processing methods and enzyme supplementation on poultry nutrition to expand its inclusion rate.

Idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis (IJO) is a rare condition presenting with vertebral and metaphyseal fractures that affects otherwise healthy prepubertal children. Bone mineral density (BMD) measurements are very low. The primary problem appears to be deficient bone formation, with a failure to accrue bone normally during growth. The onset in childhood suggests IJO is a genetic disorder, and a number of reports indicate that some children carry heterozygous pathogenic variants in genes known to be associated with defective osteoblast function and low bone mass, most commonly LRP5 or PLS3. However, a positive family history is unusual in IJO, suggesting the genetic background can be complex. We describe a young man with classical IJO who was investigated with a bone fragility gene panel and whole genome sequencing. The proband was found to carry four variants in three different genes potentially affecting osteoblast function. From his mother he had inherited mutations in ALPL (p.Asn417Ser) and LRP5 (p.Arg1036Gln), and from his father mutations in LRP5 (p.Asp1551Alsfs*13) and activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) (p.Leu306Ile). His sister had also inherited the LRP5 (p.Asp1551Alsfs*13) from her father, but not the ATF4 mutation. Their spinal BMD z-scores differed substantially (sister -1.6, father -3.2) pointing to the potential importance of the ATF4 mutation. Activating transcription factor 4 acts downstream from RUNX2 and osterix and plays an important role in osteoblast differentiation and function. This case, together with others recently published, supports the view that IJO can result from clustering of mutations in genes related to osteoblast development and function. Novel genes in these pathways may be involved. Our case also emphasizes the value of detailed study of other family members. After a bone biopsy had excluded a mineralization defect due to hypophosphatasia, the proband was treated with zoledronate infusions with good clinical effect.

Objective: To assess morphological and histological features of cartilage at the posterior medial condyle in advanced pre-prosthetic osteoarthritis (OA), which is notably thicker compared to non-OA knees. Design: Cartilage thickness was measured pre-operatively using MRI in 10 subjects with medial femorotibial OA (mean age: 70.2 years). Posterior condyles were obtained during arthroplasty and cartilage thickness, relative collagen content and subchondral bone volume fraction (BV/TV) were determined using phosphotungstic acid (PTA)-enhanced micro-CT. Regions of interest (ROI) around the maximum cartilage thickness were further analyzed through histomorphometry (Mankin score) and immunohistochemistry (cell density and apoptosis rates). Results: Maximum cartilage thickness was 2.63 â€‹± â€‹0.51 â€‹mm in vivo and 3.04 â€‹± â€‹0.55 â€‹mm ex vivo and both measurements were strongly correlated (r â€‹= â€‹0.84, p â€‹= â€‹0.003). Cartilaginous collagen content measured by PTA-enhanced micro-CT was negatively correlated with maximum cartilage thickness (r â€‹= â€‹-0.70, p â€‹= â€‹0.02). Average subchondral BV/TV was 31.6 â€‹± â€‹3.4% and did not correlate with cartilage thickness. Extensive loss of proteoglycan staining and tidemark multiplication were common histomorphological features around the maximum cartilage thickness. Chondrocyte densities were 315 â€‹± â€‹67 and 194 â€‹± â€‹36 â€‹cells/mm2 at the superficial and transitional cartilage zones, respectively. Chondrocyte apoptosis rates were approximately 70% in both zones. Maximum cartilage thickness correlated with superficial chondrocyte densities (r â€‹= â€‹0.79, p â€‹= â€‹0.01). Conclusions: Thicker cartilage at the posterior medial condyle in OA knees displayed degenerative changes both in cartilage tissue and at the osteochondral junction. Cartilage thickening may be influenced by alterations in the superficial zone, necessitating further investigation through molecular studies.

This study assesses different IBV vaccination regimens in broiler chickens using commercially available live attenuated GI-23 (Egyptian-VAR2) and GI-1 (H120) vaccines. Vaccines were administered at 1, 14 days of age, or both. The ciliostasis test, following wild-type VAR2 challenge at 28 days of age, indicated that classic H120+VAR2 at one day old followed by the VAR2 vaccine at 14 days of age provided the highest level of protection (89.58%). Similarly, administering VAR2 at 1 day of age and classic H120 at 14 days of age demonstrated substantial protection (85.42%). Conversely, administering only classic H120 and VAR2 at one day old resulted in the lowest protection level (54.17%). Tracheal virus shedding quantification and assessment of trachea and kidney degenerative changes were significantly lower in vaccinated groups compared to the unvaccinated-challenged group. In conclusion, a carefully planned vaccination regimen based on homologous vaccination offers the most effective clinical protection in broiler chickens.

This review research critically assesses the evolving landscape of age estimation methodologies, with a particular focus on the innovative integration of histomorphometry and artificial intelligence (AI) in the analysis of the medial clavicle. The medial clavicle emerges as a crucial skeletal feature for predicting age, offering valuable insights into the morphological changes occurring throughout an individual's lifespan. Through an in-depth exploration of histological complexities, including variations in osteons, trabecular structures, and cortical thickness, this review elucidates their utility as viable indicators for age-related evaluations. This framework is augmented by the incorporation of AI technology, which enables automatic picture identification, feature extraction, and complicated pattern analysis. Our review of previous research highlights the promise of AI in improving prediction models for nuanced age estimates, highlighting the importance of large-scale, diversified datasets and thorough cross-validation. This thorough study, which addresses ethical concerns as well as the influence of population-specific characteristics, moves the debate around age estimate ahead, presenting insights with consequences for forensic anthropology, clinical diagnoses, and future research avenues.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a skeletal dysplasia characterized by low bone mass and frequent fractures. Children with OI are commonly treated with bisphosphonates to reduce fracture rate, but treatment options for adults are limited. In the Phase 2b ASTEROID trial, setrusumab (a sclerostin neutralizing antibody, SclAb) improved bone density and strength in adults with type I, III, and IV OI. Here, we investigate bone matrix material properties in tetracycline-labeled trans iliac biopsies from 3 groups: (1) control: individuals with no metabolic bone disease, (2) OI: individuals with OI, (3) SclAb-OI: individuals with OI after 6 mo of setrusumab treatment (as part of the ASTEROID trial). In addition to bone histomorphometry, bone mineral and matrix properties were evaluated with nanoindentation, Raman spectroscopy, second harmonic generation imaging, quantitative backscatter electron imaging, and small-angle X-ray scattering. Spatial locations of fluorochrome labels were identified to differentiate inter-label bone of the same tissue age and intra-cortical bone. No difference in collagen orientation was found between the groups. The bone mineral density distribution and analysis of Raman spectra indicate that OI groups have greater mean mineralization, greater relative mineral content, and lower crystallinity than the control group, which was not altered by SclAb treatment. Finally, a lower modulus and hardness were measured in the inter-label bone of the OI-SclAb group compared to the OI group. Previous studies suggest that even though bone from OI has a higher mineral content, the extracellular matrix (ECM) has comparable mechanical properties. Therefore, fragility in OI may stem from contributions from other yet unexplored aspects of bone organization at higher length scales. We conclude that SclAb treatment leads to increased bone mass while not adversely affecting bone matrix properties in individuals with OI.


Individuals with OI, also known as "brittle bone disease," have low bone mass and frequent fractures. Low bone mass occurs due to an imbalance between cells that remove bone and cells that form bone. Pharmaceutical treatments that block removal of bone lead to reduced fracture rates in children with OI. Effective treatment options for adults are limited. Setrusumab is a drug that leads to increased bone mass and strength in adults with OI. Here, we investigate whether setrusumab alters the bone material in addition to improving bone mass. Three groups are compared: individuals with OI treated with setrusumab, individuals with OI not treated with setrusumab, and individuals without OI. A lower modulus and hardness were measured with nanoindentation in the setrusumab-treated group. However, we did not find any changes in the bone's multi-scale structure. Fragility in OI may stem from other yet unexplored aspects of bone organization. We conclude that setrusumab treatment leads to increased bone mass while not adversely affecting bone material properties in individuals with OI.

Romosozumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody that binds and inhibits sclerostin, produces a marked increase in bone formation with a concomitant decreased bone resorption. This transient rise in bone formation in the first 2 months of treatment is mainly due to an increased modeling-based bone formation. This requires the recruitment and differentiation of osteoblasts, one possibility being a preferential switch in commitment of precursors to osteoblasts over adipocytes. The purpose of this study was to analyze the marrow adiposity in transiliac bone biopsies at months 2 or 12 from the FRAME biopsy sub-study in patients receiving romosozumab or placebo. The total adipocyte area, number, and density were measured on the total cancellous bone area. The size and shape at the individual adipocyte level were assessed including the mean adipocyte area, perimeter, min and max diameters, and aspect ratio. No significant difference in total adipocyte area, number, or density between placebo and romosozumab groups was observed at months 2 and 12, and no difference was observed between 2 and 12 months. After 2 or 12 months, romosozumab did not modify the size or shape of the adipocytes. No relationship between the adipocyte parameters and the dynamic parameters of bone formation could be evidenced. In conclusion, based on the analysis of a small number of biopsies, no effect of romosozumab on bone marrow adiposity of iliac crest was identified after 2 and 12 months suggesting that the modeling-based formation observed at month 2 was not due to a preferential commitment of the precursor to osteoblast over adipocyte cell lines but may result from a reactivation of bone lining cells and from a progenitor pool independent of the marrow adipocyte population.


Osteoporosis is characterized by bone loss resulting from an imbalance between the bone resorption and the bone formation in favor of the resorption. Romosozumab, a new medication to treat osteoporosis, has been shown to induce an early transient increase in bone formation that requires the differentiation of new bone forming cells called osteoblasts. Osteoblasts and fat-containing cells known as adipocytes present in the bone marrow originate from a common precursor cell. Thus, a preferential switch of this precursor to osteoblast over adipocyte is thought to be a possible cause for the increase in bone formation. The purpose of this study was to analyze the bone marrow adipocytes on bone biopsies from the pelvis in osteoporotic patients treated with romosozumab in order to evaluate that possibility. After treatment, the proportion of adipocytes, their size and shape, did not change when compared with untreated patients. In conclusion, no effect of romosozumab on bone marrow adipocytes was identified suggesting that the increased bone formation induced by romosozumab was not due to a preferential differentiation of precursor cells to osteoblasts over adipocytes.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is a chemotherapy agent associated with adverse effects on male reproductive health. Chlorella vulgaris (ChV) is a potent natural antioxidant with promising applications in maintaining health and preventing oxidative stress-related diseases. The present study aimed to investigate the protective effect of ChV on DOX-induced testicular toxicity. Twenty-five Wistar rats (230 ± 20 g) were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 5), including the control group, sham group (received normal saline by oral gavage daily and intraperitoneally (IP) once a week), DOX group (3 mg/kg; once a week; IP), ChV group (300 mg/kg/day; by oral gavage), and DOX (3 mg/kg; once a week; IP) + ChV (300 mg/kg/day; by oral gavage) group. After 8 weeks of treatment, the rats were euthanized and serum testosterone level, testes histomorphometry, gonadosomatic index (GSI), apoptotic gene expression, oxidative stress index, and sperm parameters were assessed. The results showed that DOX led to a significant decrease in histological indexes, testosterone level, GSI, sperm parameters, and Bcl-2 gene expression and increased expression of P-53 and Bax genes, and oxidative stress markers (P<0.05). The administration of ChV in the DOX+ChV group significantly improved testosterone levels, sperm parameters, testicular tissue apoptosis, antioxidant enzymes, and structural integrity of the testes (P<0.05). The findings suggest that the co-administration of ChV can be a promising therapeutic agent to reduce the adverse effects of DOX on male reproductive performance.

Calorie restriction (CR) can lead to weight loss and decreased substrate availability for bone cells. Ultimately, this can lead to impaired peak bone acquisition in children and adolescence and bone loss in adults. But the mechanisms that drive diet-induced bone loss in humans are not well characterized. To explore those in greater detail, we examined the impact of 30% CR for 4 and 8 wk in both male and female 8-wk-old C57BL/6 J mice. Body composition, areal bone mineral density (aBMD), skeletal microarchitecture by micro-CT, histomorphometric parameters, and in vitro trajectories of osteoblast and adipocyte differentiation were examined. After 8 wk, CR mice lost weight and exhibited lower femoral and whole-body aBMD vs ad libitum (AL) mice. By micro-CT, CR mice had lower cortical bone area fraction vs AL mice, but males had preserved trabecular bone parameters and females showed increased bone volume fraction compared to AL mice. Histomorphometric analysis revealed that CR mice had a profound suppression in trabecular as well as endocortical and periosteal bone formation in addition to reduced bone resorption compared to AL mice. Bone marrow adipose tissue was significantly increased in CR mice. In vitro, the pace of adipogenesis in bone marrow stem cells was greatly accelerated with higher markers of adipocyte differentiation and more oil red O staining, whereas osteogenic differentiation was reduced. qRT-PCR and western blotting suggested that the expression of Wnt16 and the canonical ß-catenin pathway was compromised during CR. In sum, CR causes impaired peak cortical bone mass due to a profound suppression in bone remodeling. The increase in marrow adipocytes in vitro and in vivo is related to both progenitor recruitment and adipogenesis in the face of nutrient insufficiency. Long-term CR may lead to lower bone mass principally in the cortical envelope, possibly due to impaired Wnt signaling.


Calorie restriction led to impaired bone mass and increased accumulation of bone marrow adipose tissue. During the development of bone-fat imbalance due to calorie restriction, bone remodeling was notably inhibited. Calorie restriction may shift the differentiation of bone marrow stem cells toward adipocytes instead of osteoblasts. This process involves a disruption in the canonical Wnt signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the histomorphometric and computerized microtomographic (Micro-CT) analysis of the regenerated bone tissue from maxillary sinus augmentation surgery, with and without using the collagen membrane on the external osteotomy window. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve patients were selected for this prospective, controlled, and randomized study. The patients were submitted to bilateral maxillary sinus surgery in a split-mouth design. On the test side, the maxillary sinus augmentation procedure included using Geistlich Bio-Oss® and a Geistlich Bio-Gide® collagen membrane covering the lateral osteotomy window. On the control side, only Geistlich Bio-Oss® was used without the presence of the membrane. After 6 months, the surgeries for implant installation were performed. In this surgical phase, specimens of the regenerated tissue were collected for histological and Micro-CT analysis. RESULTS: In the histomorphometric evaluation, the mean (±SD) percentages of newly formed bone were 43.9% (±11.5) and 40.8% (±8.9) in the test and control groups, respectively. The corresponding values of the Micro-CT analysis were 36.6% (±3.4) and 37.2% (±4.7) in the test and control groups, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between the test and control groups in the two methods. In addition, there was no statistically significant difference between the mean percentage of biomaterial remaining between the test and control groups. However, the mean percentage of newly formed bone was significantly higher and the mean percentage of remaining biomaterial was significantly lower in the histomorphometric analysis compared to the values obtained through microtomography. CONCLUSION: The additional use of collagen membranes in maxillary sinus surgery does not offer advantages in newly formed bone.

Background and Aim: To combat enteric infections and antibiotic resistance in the poultry industry, researchers seek alternatives such as probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics as growth promoters. Synbiotics support probiotic growth through the supply of essential nutrients. The study's objectives were to assess the most effective delivery methods for synbiotics and evaluate their growth, histomorphometric, and hematological impacts on Cobb-500 broilers. Materials and Methods: Two studies, independently conducted, employed a completely randomized design. One hundred and eighty viable eggs in the first trial were assigned to three groups: Control (T1), sterile water (T2), and synbiotic in sterile water (T3). On the 21st day of hatching, hatchability, day-old body weights, and ileum samples for histomorphometric analysis were recorded. In the second trial, out of 500 viable eggs, 200 eggs were fed in ovo with synbiotics (PoultryStar® sol, Biomin Singapore Pte Ltd, Singapore) on 17.5 days and 300 were set aside without in ovo injection. The treatments were control (T1), in water synbiotic (T2), in ovo synbiotic (T3), combination of in ovo synbiotic and synbiotic in feed (T4), and synbiotic in feed only (T5). On 21 and 42 days, blood, ileum, and visceral organ samples were collected for laboratory analysis. Data on weight gain, daily feed intake, and water consumption were recorded for 42 days. Results: The initial experiment's results revealed a decrease in hatchability, slight weight increase, and significant intestinal morphological changes with the use of an in ovo synbiotic. Applying synbiotic through various methods in the second trial yielded better growth results, lower blood cholesterol, and significantly longer (p < 0.05) villi on 21 days. Conclusion: Using the in ovo method to administer synbiotics lowered hatchability. Use of synbiotics with any method or in combination enhances growth, ileum structure, dressing yield, feed efficiency, and cholesterol levels in blood. Synbiotics enhance gut health and overall performance in broilers when used through diverse approaches.

This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the uterotubal junction in two distinct mammalian species, the bovine (Bos taurus) and the dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius), focusing on histological and histomorphometric parameters. Uterotubal junction (UTJ) was dissected from 8 cows and 12 camels with dominant follicles, and processed for H&E staining for histology, and histomorphometry examination. The results showed that the camel uterotubal junction papillae (UTJP) existed only in camels and was completely absent in cattle. Histologically, the cow UTJ appears with a star-shaped lumen, and the mucosa is lined by a simple columnar epithelium with ciliated and non-ciliated cells. Superficial (SG) and deep glands (DG) were abundant in the submucosa. Camel UTJP is a conical structure, it has a pale yellowish colour, 0.5 ± 0.2 cm height, and 0.3 ± 0.1 cm width, and it has a distinct sphincter at the tip towards the uterine lumen. In the camel UTJP, the lumen is wider, and the mucosa showed large multiple folds lined with ciliated and non-ciliated cells in a pseudostratified columnar epithelium. The submucosa showed no mucosal glands. Lumen area, lumen epithelial height, luminal epithelial density, the thickness of the muscular layer, number of folds, fold height, epithelial height, fold area and epithelial perimeter were higher in camel UTJP (p < .001) than cow UTJ, while the total endosalpinx area and glandular epithelial density were lower in camel UTJP (p < .001) than in cow UTJ. In conclusion, this study elucidates potential variations in the uterotubal junction between bovines and dromedary camels, providing valuable insights into their reproductive adaptations. The epithelial lining, absence of glands and the thick layer of tunica muscularis might indicate that camel UTJP could play a mechanical role in selecting spermatozoa and assisting the hatching of blastocysts during their passage into the uterus.

INTRODUCTION: The ductus arteriosus (DA) connects the left pulmonary artery with the aorta during fetal life. Although it connects two elastic arteries, histological studies have shown that it is a muscular artery. There are very few studies on the histomorphometry of human fetal cadaveric DA. There are few studies on the changes in the tunics of the DA at various stages of fetal development. The present study aimed to observe the histomorphometric features of DA and its histological variations according to the gestational age of the fetus. METHODS: The study sample was DA dissected from 34 fetal cadavers of different gestational ages and stained with standard hematoxylin and eosin staining (H&E). We studied the structure of DA under a light microscope. We used ImageJ software (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland) to measure the thickness of all three layers of the DA wall. RESULTS: The thickness of the DA wall was directly proportional to the gestational age of the fetus. In each trimester, we observed distinct histological changes in the tunics. CONCLUSION: The formation of multiple intimal mounds and the increase in intimal thickness observed during the last trimester are responsible for the closure of the ductus after birth. Elastosis is associated with patent DA. The disappearance of elastosis at a later gestational age ensures the closure of the ductus.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) presents significant challenges due to its complex etiology, often insidious onset, high incidence, and progressive structural deterioration. While research has explored genetic and molecular factors, treatment outcomes remain suboptimal, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of disease progression. OBJECTIVE: This study employs a specific mandibular shift rat model to explore the dynamic progression of TMJ-OA-like lesions and evaluate the potential for self-repair at different stages, aiming to inform early diagnosis and preventative strategies. METHODS: Seventy-two female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into three groups: a control group (n=24; average weight: 157.23±1.63 g) receiving sham surgery. an experimental group (n=24; average weight: 157.78±1.88 g) subjected to mandibular shift induction, and a removal group (n=24; average weight: 158.11±2.20 g) experiencing mandibular shift for one, two, or four weeks followed by a one-month recovery period (designated as 1w Removal, 2w Removal and 4w Removal, respectively). Histomorphological and molecular analyses were conducted at designated time points. RESULTS: Rats in the 1-week removal group exhibited substantial recovery in condylar morphology, cartilage thickness, extracellular matrix composition, and expression of OA-related genes. Conversely, the 4-week removal group mirrored the experimental group, indicating limited self-repair capacity at later stages. The 2-week removal group presented with variable outcomes, with some animals showing signs of recovery and others resembling the experimental group, indicating a potential transitional phase in the disease process. CONCLUSION: Recovery from early-stage TMJ-OA involves eliminating provoking factors such as occlusal interference or reducing joint loading. However, advanced stages exhibit diminished self-repair capabilities, necessitating additional therapeutic interventions. These findings emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in TMJ-OA management.
