RESUMEN

Chinese diesel trucks are the main contributors to NOx and particulate matter (PM) vehicle emissions. An increase in diesel trucks could aggravate air pollution and damage human health. The Chinese government has recently implemented a series of emission control technologies and measures for air quality improvement. This paper summarizes recent control technologies and measures for diesel truck emissions in China and introduces the comprehensive application of control technologies and measures in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and surrounding regions. Remote online monitoring technology has been adopted according to the China VI standard for heavy-duty diesel trucks, and control measures such as transportation structure adjustment and heavy pollution enterprise classification control continue to support the battle action plan for pollution control. Perspectives and suggestions are provided for promoting pollution control and supervision of diesel truck emissions: adhere to the concept of overall management and control, vigorously promote the application of systematic and technological means in emission monitoring, continuously facilitate cargo transportation structure adjustment and promote new energy freight vehicles. This paper aims to accelerate the implementation of control technologies and measures throughout China. China is endeavouring to control diesel truck exhaust pollution. China is willing to cooperate with the world to protect the global ecological environment.

RESUMEN

As an interferon-stimulating factor protein, STING plays a role in the response and downstream liaison in antiviral natural immunity. Upon viral invasion, the immediate response of STING protein leads to a series of changes in downstream proteins, which ultimately leads to an antiviral immune response in the form of proinflammatory cytokines and type I interferons, thus triggering an innate immune response, an adaptive immune response in vivo, and long-term protection of the host. In the field of antiviral natural immunity, it is particularly important to rigorously and sequentially probe the dynamic changes in the antiviral natural immunity connector protein STING caused by the entire anti-inflammatory and anti-pathway mechanism and the differences in upstream and downstream proteins. Traditionally, proteomics technology has been validated by detecting proteins in a 2D platform, for which it is difficult to sensitively identify changes in the nature and abundance of target proteins. With the development of mass spectrometry (MS) technology, MS-based proteomics has made important contributions to characterizing the dynamic changes in the natural immune proteome induced by viral infections. MS analytical techniques have several advantages, such as high throughput, rapidity, sensitivity, accuracy, and automation. The most common techniques for detecting complex proteomes are liquid chromatography (LC) and mass spectrometry (MS). LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry), which combines the physical separation capability of LC and the mass analysis capability of MS, is a powerful technique mainly used for analyzing the proteome of cells, tissues, and body fluids. To explore the combination of traditional proteomics techniques such as Western blotting, Co-IP (co-Immunoprecipitation), and the latest LC-MS methods to probe the anti-inflammatory pathway and the differential changes in upstream and downstream proteins induced by the antiviral natural immune junction protein STING.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although intensive blood pressure (BP) control has not been shown to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), intensive BP control has been shown to reduce the risk for adverse cardiovascular outcomes in the CKD population. The aim of this post-hoc study was to study the interplay between a self-monitoring BP system and glomerular function. METHODS: In all, 949 participants with hypertension underwent visits at baseline, after eight weeks and 12 months. Half of the participants received a BP monitor and installed a program on their mobile phone. During eight weeks, they measured daily and reported their BP values. RESULTS: Within the intervention group, BP and systolic BP (SBP) decreased from baseline to eight weeks and 12 months (p < .001). Pulse pressure (PP) and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) decreased from baseline to eight weeks (p = .021 and p = .004) vs 12 months (p = .035 and p = .008). Within the control group, a decrease was observed from baseline to 12 months for SBP, diastolic BP (DBP) and PP (p = .025, p = .023 and p = .036). In the intervention group, we observed an association between a decrease in SBP, DBP, PP and MAP and a decrease in eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate), (p < .001, p < .001, p = .013 and p < .001). In the control group, similar results were observed for PP only (p = .027). Within the intervention group, eGFR decreased (p < .001) but within the control group, the decrease was non-significant (p = .051). CONCLUSION: We observed an association between a decrease in all BP components and eGFR decline within the normal range in the intervention group but not in the controls. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov [NCT03554382].

WHAT IS THE CONTEXTHypertension is a common risk factor and has been identified as the most important contributor to end stage renal disease (ESRD)At present, it is unclear if hypertension also plays a role in the gradual loss of kidney function that occurs with ageing in the general populationSome studies have found a link between baseline blood pressure and a decline in GFR (glomerular filtration rate), while others have shown no relationship or even higher GFRMost patients with hypertension attend primary care for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. Home blood pressure monitoring in hypertension treatment is becoming increasingly commonThe PERson-centredness in Hypertension management using Information Technology (PERHIT) study was designed to evaluate the effect of supporting self-management on (home) blood pressure by the use of information technology and aimed to lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension in primary careThe aim of this sub-study was to evaluate whether a person-centred approach in the treatment of high blood pressure, according to PERHIT, will have an impact on kidney function in patients with hypertension.WHAT IS NEWBlood pressure reduction in the intervention group was associated with a greater fall of eGFR (estimated GFR)glomerular filtration rate), but within the normal range, present already after eight weeks. Our analyses showed significant interactions between improved treatment related to the blood pressure components and lowering of eGFR, suggesting that the association between blood pressure changes and eGFR reduction was most prominent in individuals undergoing more effective antihypertensive treatment.WHAT IS THE IMPACTOur study concerns a common patient group at primary healthcare centres. When blood pressure treatment is initiated, or when treatment is increased via the general practitioner, it is common practice to arrange for a follow-up check of kidney function estimates such as creatinine and eGFR. In many cases, unfortunately not in accordance with proven science and experience, hypertension medication might be discontinued, or the dose reduced due to a short-term deterioration of kidney function (eGFR) that often reverts to normal levels again. This is a development that must be observed and prevented. Our results show that intensified blood pressure control is associated with a reduction in glomerular function measured by eGFR, but within normal range.

RESUMEN

The integrated economic reforms in recent years have transformed human life, however, the subsequent rise in environmental challenges necessitates sustainable development goals to ensure net-zero transformation. Within the context of modern energy, economic, and environmental transformation, we deliberate how environmental taxes, energy transition, and sustainable environmental innovation impact climate change in 38 OECD economies. Our robust empirical investigation allows us to report that environmental taxation, sustainable environmental technology, and energy transition lower but GDP and trade openness exacerbate ecological challenges. We also divide the dataset in G7 and the rest of the OECD groups to document the varying impact of environmental policies within OECD economies. Our econometric analysis helps us report novel policy frameworks to solve climate challenges under the UN SDG agenda.

RESUMEN

Innovative technology-based solutions in mental healthcare promise significant improvements in care quality and clinical outcomes. However, their successful implementation is profoundly influenced by the levels of trust patients hold toward their treatment providers, organizations, and the technology itself. This paper delves into the complexities of building and assessing patient trust within the intensive mental health care context, focusing on inpatient settings. We explore the multifaceted nature of trust, including interpersonal, institutional, and technological trust. We highlight the crucial role of therapeutic trust, which comprises both interpersonal trust between patients and providers, and institutional trust in treatment organizations. The manuscript identifies potential key barriers to trust, from sociocultural background to a patient's psychopathology. Furthermore, it examines the concept of technological trust, emphasizing the influence of digital literacy, socio-economic status, and user experience on patients' acceptance of digital health innovations. By emphasizing the importance of assessing and addressing the state of trust among patients, the overarching goal is to leverage digital innovations to enhance mental healthcare outcomes within intensive mental health settings.

RESUMEN

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) persistence and potential harm have become more widely recognized in the environment due to its fast-paced research. However, the bibliometric review on the detection, research hotspot, and development trend of environmental ARGs has not been widely conducted. It is essential to provide a comprehensive overview of the last 30 years of research on environmental ARGs to clarify the changes in the research landscape and ascertain future prospects. This study presents a visualized analysis of data from the Web of Science to enhance our understanding of ARGs. The findings indicate that solid-phase extraction provides a reliable method for extracting ARG. Technological advancements in commercial kits and microfluidics have facilitated the efficacy of ARGs extraction with significantly reducing processing times. PCR and its derivatives, DNA sequencing, and multi-omics technology are the prevalent methodologies for ARGs detection, enabling the expansion of ARG research from individual strains to more intricate microbial communities in the environment. Furthermore, due to the development of combination, hybridization and mass spectrometer technologies, considerable advancements have been achieved in terms of sensitivity and accuracy as well as lowering the cost of ARGs detection. Currently, high-frequency terms such as "Antibiotic Resistance, Antibiotics, and Metagenomics" are the center of attention for study in this area. Prominent topics include the investigation of anthropogenic impacts on environmental resistance, as well as the dynamics of migration, dissemination, and adaptation of environmental ARGs, etc. The research on environmental ARGs has made significant advancements in the fields of "Microbiology" and "Biotechnology Applied Microbiology". Over the past decade, there has been a notable increase in the fields of "Environmental Sciences Ecology" and "Engineering" with a similar growth trend observed in "Water Resources". These three domains are expected to continue driving extensive study within the realm of environmental ARGs.

RESUMEN

As the most abundant renewable carbon source, lignocellulose holds potential as a raw material for biofuels and biochar. The components required for biofuel production differ from those for biochar, so combining processes can reduce costs. Biofuel preparation necessitates cellulase treatment of lignocellulose. This study examines the effects of various enzyme treatment conditions (dosage, time, temperature) on lignocellulose, focusing on the properties of biochar derived from it (BC-SR). A mathematical model was constructed to study the relationship between enzyme treatment conditions and BC-SR properties. BC-SR exhibited high adsorption selectivity for bisphenol A and outperformed untreated biochar in fixed-bed column experiments, demonstrating greater removal efficiency and structural integrity. This study provides insights into the impact of enzymatic treatment on biochar and offers a cost-effective method for producing stable, efficient biochar. Additionally, a highly persistent biochar can enter the carbon trading market as a carbon-neutral technology, further realizing economic and environmental benefits.

RESUMEN

Most Americans exceed the recommended limit for sodium in their diet, a risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Efforts have been made by the food industry and government agencies to reduce the sodium content in foods and encourage the consumption of lower sodium diets. Such efforts, however, are not successful in improving public health when consumers do not accept and consume lower sodium foods. This review article provides an overview of the strategies that have been used by the US food industry to reduce and replace sodium in consumer packaged goods, as well as future sodium reduction strategies and approaches for replacing sodium with potassium salts. Challenges in consumer acceptance regarding the reduction of sodium in foods are also discussed. Because of the widespread consumption of numerous sodium-containing consumer packaged goods, implementing future strategies in various aspects of salt reduction and potassium replacement in foods should have a profound impact on the health of Americans. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: New information is provided herein as it discusses the most current and collective perspectives of major food industry successes and challenges, as well as government strategies to decrease sodium intake. The information provided also addresses future strategies for reducing sodium content in foods, increasing potassium intake, and consumer acceptance of lower sodium foods.

RESUMEN

The study focuses on how infertility and assisted reproductive technology (ART) have been portrayed in the Zimbabwean print news media, specifically looking at articles related to the country's two private fertility clinics established in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Through thematic analysis of 35 news articles, seven prominent themes were developed: infertility as an undesirable and stigmatised condition; stress and the feminisation of infertility; the impact of societal and familial pressure to have children; ART as a ray of hope for infertile couples; growing acceptance of ART; availability, accessibility and affordability of ART; and the use of alternative medicines to cure infertility. The research highlights the coexistence of traditional medicine and ART in Zimbabwe, as well as the impact of stigma, pressure, and gender dynamics on infertile couples. Study findings signal how costly ART treatments may drive individuals towards potentially harmful traditional remedies. They also underscore the need for increased awareness of infertility, efforts to reduce stigma, and addressing barriers to ART access, particularly for men. Overall, findings shed light on the complexities surrounding infertility in Zimbabwe and the importance of addressing these issues in pursuit of better reproductive healthcare outcomes.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a prevalent and debilitating complication of diabetes, often leading to severe neuropathic pain. Although other diabetes-related complications have witnessed a surge of emerging treatments in recent years, DPN has seen minimal progression. This stagnation stems from various factors, including insensitive diagnostic methods and inadequate treatment options for neuropathic pain. METHODS: In this comprehensive review, we highlight promising novel diagnostic techniques for assessing DPN, elucidating their development, strengths, and limitations, and assessing their potential as future reliable clinical biomarkers and endpoints. In addition, we delve into the most promising emerging pharmacological and mechanistic treatments for managing neuropathic pain, an area currently characterized by inadequate pain relief and a notable burden of side effects. RESULTS: Skin biopsies, corneal confocal microscopy, transcutaneous electrical stimulation, blood-derived biomarkers, and multi-omics emerge as some of the most promising new techniques, while low-dose naltrexone, selective sodium-channel blockers, calcitonin gene-related peptide antibodies, and angiotensin type 2 receptor antagonists emerge as some of the most promising new drug candidates. CONCLUSION: Our review concludes that although several promising diagnostic modalities and emerging treatments exist, an ongoing need persists for the further development of sensitive diagnostic tools and mechanism-based, personalized treatment approaches.

RESUMEN

LAY ABSTRACT: Technologies using artificial intelligence to recognize people's emotional states are increasingly being developed under the name of emotional recognition technologies. Emotion recognition technologies claim to identify people's emotional states based on data, like facial expressions. This is despite research providing counterevidence that emotion recognition technologies are founded on bad science and that it is not possible to correctly identify people's emotions in this way. The use of emotion recognition technologies is widespread, and they can be harmful when they are used in the workplace, especially for autistic workers. Although previous research has shown that the origins of emotion recognition technologies relied on autistic people, there has been little research on the impact of emotion recognition technologies on autistic people when it is used in the workplace. Through a review of recent academic studies, this article looks at the development and implementation processes of emotion recognition technologies to show how autistic people in particular may be disadvantaged or harmed by the development and use of the technologies. This article closes with a call for more research on autistic people's perception of the technologies and their impact, with involvement from diverse participants.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Technology has the potential to prevent patient falls in healthcare settings and to reduce work-related injuries among healthcare providers. However, the usefulness and acceptability of each technology requires careful evaluation. Framed by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and using the Adaptive Robotic Nursing Assistant (ARNA) to assist with patient ambulation, the present study examined the perceived usefulness of robots in patients' fall prevention with implications for preventing associated work-related injuries among healthcare providers. METHODS: Employing an experimental design, subjects were undergraduate nursing students (N = 38) and one external subject (not a nursing student) who played the role of the patient. Procedures included subjects ambulating a simulated patient in three ways: (a) following the practice of a nurse assisting a patient to walk with the patient wearing a gait belt; (b) an ARNA-assisted process with the gait belt attached to ARNA; (c) an ARNA-assisted process with a subject walking a patient wearing a harness that is attached to ARNA. Block randomization was used with the following experimental scenarios: Gait Belt (human with a gait belt), "ARNA + Gait Belt" (a robot with a gait belt), and "ARNA + Harness" (a robot with a harness). Descriptive statistics and a multiple regression model were used to analyze the data and compare the outcome described as the Perceived Usefulness (PU) of a robot for patient walking versus a human "nurse assistant" without a robot. The independent variables included the experimental conditions of "Gait Belt," "ARNA + Gait Belt," and "ARNA + Harness," the subject's age, race, and previous videogame playing experience. FINDINGS: Results indicated that PU was significantly higher in the Gait Belt + ARNA and Harness + ARNA conditions than in the Gait Belt condition (p-value <.01 for both variables). In examining potential influencing factors, the effects of race (White, African American, and Asian), age, and previous video-playing experience were not statistically significant (p-value >.05). DISCUSSION: Results demonstrated that using robot technology to assist in walking patients was perceived by subjects as more useful in preventing falls than the gait belt. Patient fall prevention also has implications for preventing associated work-related injuries among healthcare providers. IMPLICATIONS: Understanding the effects of a subject's perceptions can guide further development of assistive robots in patient care. Robotic engineers and interdisciplinary teams can design robots to accommodate worker characteristics and individual differences to improve worker safety and reduce work injuries.

Background: Despite positive results for the use of assistive technologies (ATs) in dementia, the uptake of ATs lags behind. It is considered important to assess determinants of successful or unsuccessful implementation of ATs. Objective: We explored factors that influence the implementation of ATs for community-dwelling people with dementia, with the aim to better understand potentially effective implementation strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional survey for researchers was developed and disseminated, exploring factors that influence either successful or unsuccessful implementation of ATs for dementia. The survey consisted of closed and open questions. Results: The response rate was 10% (21/206); the 21 respondents who completed the survey were from 8 countries. Determinants of implementation were described for 21 ATs, of which 12 were successfully and 9 were unsuccessfully implemented. Various types of ATs were included, such as online platforms, sensors, or physical aids. The main determinants of implementation success were related to the AT itself, contextual factors, research activities, and implementation strategies. There was a lack of research data on some ethical issues and cost-effectiveness. Conclusions: This study provided insight into some main barriers to and facilitators of implementation of ATs in dementia related to the AT itself, context, research-related activities, and applied implementation strategies. Lessons were formulated for various stakeholders to improve the implementation effectiveness of ATs in dementia.

RESUMEN

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent gynecological-endocrinological disorder characterized by hyperandrogenism, menstrual irregularities, and metabolic disturbances. Recent research has highlighted the role of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation in exacerbating PCOS symptoms and impeding reproductive outcomes. Astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant found in marine organisms, has been suggested as a potential therapeutic intervention due to its ability to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. This meta-analysis systematically reviews randomized controlled trials assessing the impact of astaxanthin supplementation on oxidative stress and reproductive outcomes in women with PCOS. Data from four trials were analyzed, focusing on markers of oxidative stress and reproductive health metrics. The meta-analysis utilized fixed and random-effects models to synthesize results, with heterogeneity assessed using Chi-square and I2 statistics. The findings indicate that while astaxanthin significantly improves markers of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in follicular fluid, it does not show a consistent effect on other oxidative stress biomarkers such as malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), or superoxide dismutase (SOD). Reproductive outcomes, including oocyte quality and the number of high-quality embryos, showed moderate improvements, although effects on fertilization rates and pregnancy outcomes were insignificant. The analysis highlights variability in study designs and dosing, suggesting a need for further research with standardized protocols and larger sample sizes. Future studies should focus on determining optimal dosing, exploring mechanistic pathways, and investigating the combined effects of astaxanthin with other interventions. Longitudinal studies are needed to assess long-term benefits and safety, and personalized approaches could enhance treatment efficacy for individuals with PCOS.
