BACKGROUND: White clover (Trifolium repens) is a globally important perennial forage legume. This species also serves as an eco-evolutionary model system for studying within-species chemical defense variation; it features a well-studied polymorphism for cyanogenesis (HCN release following tissue damage), with higher frequencies of cyanogenic plants favored in warmer locations worldwide. Using a newly generated haplotype-resolved genome and two other long-read assemblies, we tested the hypothesis that copy number variants (CNVs) at cyanogenesis genes play a role in the ability of white clover to rapidly adapt to local environments. We also examined questions on subgenome evolution in this recently evolved allotetraploid species and on chromosomal rearrangements in the broader IRLC legume clade. RESULTS: Integration of PacBio HiFi, Omni-C, Illumina, and linkage map data yielded a completely de novo genome assembly for white clover (created without a priori sequence assignment to subgenomes). We find that white clover has undergone extensive transposon diversification since its origin but otherwise shows highly conserved genome organization and composition with its diploid progenitors. Unlike some other clover species, its chromosomal structure is conserved with other IRLC legumes. We further find extensive evidence of CNVs at the major cyanogenesis loci; these contribute to quantitative variation in the cyanogenic phenotype and to local adaptation across wild North American populations. CONCLUSIONS: This work provides a case study documenting the role of CNVs in local adaptation in a plant species, and it highlights the value of pan-genome data for identifying contributions of structural variants to adaptation in nature.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Leaf variegation is common in plants and confers diverse adaptive functions. However, its genetic underpinnings remain largely unresolved; this is particularly true for variegation that arises through modified leaf tissue structure that affects light reflection. White clover is naturally polymorphic for structure-based white leaf mark variegation. It therefore provides a useful system to examine the genetic basis of this phenotype, and to assess potential costs to photosynthetic efficiency resulting from modified leaf structures. This study sought to map the loci controlling the white leaf mark in white clover and evaluate the relationship between white leaf mark, leaf thickness, and photosynthetic efficiency. METHODS: We generated a high-density genetic linkage map from an F3 mapping population, employing reference genome-based SNP markers. White leaf mark was quantified through detailed phenotypic evaluations alongside leaf thickness to test how tissue thickness may affect the variegation phenotype. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping was performed to characterize their genetic bases. Photosynthetic efficiency measurements were used to test for physiological trade-offs between variegation and photosynthetic output. KEY RESULTS: The V locus, a major gene responsible for the white leaf mark polymorphism, was mapped to the distal end of chromosome 5, and several modifier loci were also mapped that contribute additively to variegation intensity. The presence and intensity of white leaf mark was associated with greater leaf thickness; however, increased variegation did not detectably affect photosynthetic efficiency. CONCLUSIONS: We have successfully mapped the major locus governing the white leaf mark in white clover, along with several modifier loci, revealing a complex basis for this structure-based variegation. The apparent absence of compromised photosynthesis in variegated leaves challenges the notion that variegation creates fitness trade-offs between photosynthetic efficiency and other adaptive functions. This finding suggests that other factors may maintain the white leaf mark polymorphism in white clover.

The clover seed weevil, Tychius picirostris Fabricius (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a major pest in Oregon white clover seed crops. Reliance on synthetic pyrethroid insecticides and limited availability of diverse modes of action (MoAs) has increased insecticide resistance selection in regional T. picirostris populations, emphasizing the need to evaluate novel chemistries and rotational strategies for effective insecticide resistance management (IRM). The efficacy of 8 foliar insecticide formulations for managing T. picirostris adult and larval life stages was determined in small and large-plot field trials across 2 crop years. In both years, bifenthrin (Brigade 2EC), the grower's standard, showed negligible adult and larval suppression. Insecticide formulations with isocycloseram and cyantraniliprole active ingredients reduced adult and larval populations when applied at BBCH 59-60 (prebloom) and BBCH 65-66 (full bloom) growth stages, respectively. While differences in T. picirostris abundance were observed among insecticide treatments, seed yield differences were not detected in large-plot trials. Larval abundance was correlated with reduced seed yield, and an economic threshold of ≥3 larvae per 30 inflorescences was determined as a conservative larval threshold to justify foliar applications of diamide insecticides. Additional commercial white clover seed fields were surveyed to compare larval scouting techniques, including a standard Berlese funnel and a grower's do-it-yourself funnel. Both larval extraction techniques were correlated and provided similar estimates of larval abundance. These findings demonstrate new MoAs, optimal insecticide application timing, and larval monitoring methods that can be incorporated into an effective T. picirostris IRM program in white clover seed crops.

Pollen abnormalities frequency of Scots pine and pollen sterility of white clover, common columbine, and greater celandine growing in the Bryansk and Gomel' regions radioactively contaminated after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) were assessed. The frequency of abnormal pine pollen at the most contaminated plots significantly exceeded the control level and positively correlated with the total absorbed dose and the absorbed dose from ß-radiation. No sustainable significant changes in pollen sterility of the herbaceous plants studied were found in the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl NPP.

Species that repeatedly evolve phenotypic clines across environmental gradients have been highlighted as ideal systems for characterizing the genomic basis of local environmental adaptation. However, few studies have assessed the importance of observed phenotypic clines for local adaptation: conspicuous traits that vary clinally may not necessarily be the most critical in determining local fitness. The present study was designed to fill this gap, using a plant species characterized by repeatedly evolved adaptive phenotypic clines. White clover is naturally polymorphic for its chemical defence cyanogenesis (HCN release with tissue damage); climate-associated cyanogenesis clines have evolved throughout its native and introduced range worldwide. We performed landscape genomic analyses on 415 wild genotypes from 43 locations spanning much of the North American species range to assess the relative importance of cyanogenesis loci vs. other genomic factors in local climatic adaptation. We find clear evidence of local adaptation, with temperature-related climatic variables best describing genome-wide differentiation between sampling locations. The same climatic variables are also strongly correlated with cyanogenesis frequencies and gene copy number variations (CNVs) at cyanogenesis loci. However, landscape genomic analyses indicate no significant contribution of cyanogenesis loci to local adaptation. Instead, several genomic regions containing promising candidate genes for plant response to seasonal cues are identified - some of which are shared with previously identified QTLs for locally adaptive fitness traits in North American white clover. Our findings suggest that local adaptation in white clover is likely determined primarily by genes controlling the timing of growth and flowering in response to local seasonal cues. More generally, this work suggests that caution is warranted when considering the importance of conspicuous phenotypic clines as primary determinants of local adaptation.

The invasion of alien plant and the pollution caused by soil microplastics have emerged as significant ecological threats. Recent studies have demonstrated aggravating effect of non-biodegradable microplastics on plant invasion. However, the impact of biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) on plant invasion remains unclear. Therefore, it is imperative to explore the impact of BMPs on plant invasion. In this study, a 30-day potting experiment with Trifolium repens L. (an invasive plant) and Oxalis corniculata L. (a native plant) was conducted to evaluate the influence of BMPs on T. repens's invasion. The findings revealed that BMPs results in a reduction in available N and P contents, thereby facilitating the colonization of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on T. repens 's roots. Consequently, T. repens adjusted its N and P foraging strategy by increasing P absorption ratio, and enhancing the accumulation of N and P in leaves. This ultimately led to the decrease of relative neighbor effect index of T. repens, indicating an aggravated invasion by T. repens. This study significantly enhances and expands the understanding of mechanisms by which microplastics aggravate plant invasion.

Root-associated microbiota provide great fitness to hosts under environmental stress. However, the underlying microecological mechanisms controlling the interaction between heavy metal-stressed plants and the microbiota are poorly understood. In this study, we screened and isolated representative amplicon sequence variants (strain M4) from rhizosphere soil samples of Trifolium repens L. growing in areas with high concentrations of heavy metals. To investigate the microecological mechanisms by which T. repens adapts to heavy metal stress in abandoned mining areas, we conducted potting experiments, bacterial growth promotion experiments, biofilm formation experiments, and chemotaxis experiments. The results showed that high concentrations of heavy metals significantly altered the rhizosphere bacterial community structure of T. repens and significantly enriched Microbacterium sp. Strain M4 was demonstrated to significantly increased the biomass and root length of T. repens under heavy metal stress. Additionally, L-proline and stigmasterol could promote bacterial growth and biofilm formation and induce chemotaxis for strain M4, suggesting that they are key rhizosphere secretions of T. repens for Microbacterium sp. recruitment. Our results suggested that T. repens adapted the heavy metal stress by reshaping rhizosphere secretions to modify the rhizosphere microbiota.

In traditional ryegrass/white clover (Lolium perenne L./Trifolium repens L.) pastoral systems, forage herbs such as chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) present an opportunity to fill feed deficits during late spring and summer. Although multiple research publications have evaluated the efficacy of chicory for enhancing milk production and milk fatty acid (FA) profile, no publication has quantitatively synthesised the body of research. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effect of chicory on milk production and composition, as well as on the milk fatty acid composition of dairy cattle. A total of 29 comparisons from 15 unique research publications involving 597 dairy cattle were used to develop a dataset for analysis. Three-level random-effect and robust variance estimator models were used to account for the hierarchical structure of the data and the dependency of effect sizes within publications. Chicory inclusion increased milk yield when compared to grass-based diets {weighted mean difference (WMD) = 1.07 (95% CI 0.54-1.60) kg/cow/d, p < 0.001}, but it provided a similar milk yield when compared to other forages such as legumes and herbs {dicots; WMD = -0.30, (95% CI -89-0.29) kg/cow/day, p = 0.312}. Increases in milk yield were congruent with differences in DM intake (p = 0.09) and ME intakes (p = 0.003), being similar in chicory-fed and dicot-fed cows but higher than grass-fed cows. Chicory feeding's effect on milk solids was twice as high during mid lactation {154 days in milk; WMD = 0.13, (95% 0.081-0.175) kg/cow/day, p < 0.001} as during late lactation {219 days in milk; WMD = 0.06, (95% 0.003-0.13) kg/cow/day, p = 0.041}. In line with milk yield, greater and more significant effect sizes were found for alpha linolenic acid {ALA; WMD = 0.20 (95% CI 0.06-0.35) g/100 g FA, p = 0.011} when chicory was compared to grass species only. Comparing chicory with dicots suggests that chicory inclusion did not impact ALA concentrations {WMD = 0.001 (95% CI -0.02-0.2) g/100 g FA, p = 0.99}. There were no differences in conjugated linoleic acid concentration in the milk of cows fed chicory or control diets. The study provides empirical evidence of chicory's efficacy for improved milk production and milk fatty acid composition.

The clover seed weevil, Tychius picirostris Fabricius, a serious pest of white clover, Trifolium repens L., grown for seed in western Oregon, causing feeding damage to flowers and developing seeds. Since 2017, white clover seed producers have anecdotally reported T. picirostris control failures using foliar pyrethroid insecticide applications. This mode of action (MoA) is an important chemical control option for T. picirostris management. To evaluate insecticide resistance selection to pyrethroids (bifenthrin) and other MoAs labeled for T. picirostris management (malathion and chlorantraniliprole), adult populations were collected from 8 commercial white clover grown for seed fields in the Willamette Valley, OR, in 2022 and 2023. Among collected Oregon populations, very high resistance ratios (RR50 = 178.00-725.67) were observed to technical grade bifenthrin and low to high resistance ratios (RR50 = 7.80-32.80) to malathion in surface contact assays compared to a susceptible Canadian field population. Moreover, >2.73 times the labeled rate of formulated product containing bifenthrin as the sole MoA was required to kill >50% of T. picirostris in topical assays. Synergistic assays with a mixed-function oxidase inhibitor, an esterase inhibitor, and a glutathione-S-transferase inhibitor revealed phase I and II detoxification enzymes are present in Oregon T. picirostris populations and confer metabolic resistance to bifenthrin. This is the first report of T. picirostris insecticide resistance selection to pyrethroid and organophosphate insecticides. Results will inform continued monitoring and insecticide resistance management strategies to slow the evolution of T. picirostris insecticide resistance selection in Oregon's white clover seed production.

Trifolium repens is a well-known herbaceous, perennial herb and has been extensively used in the traditional medicine system over the years. Various parts of the plant are traditionally used as a curative agent against several health ailments such as skin problems, wound healing, stomach disorders, sedative, fever, antiseptic, analgesic, expectorant, psoriasis and eczema. To maximise the plant's potential for usage in the future, the review also aims to update information about its significant pharmacological properties. The ethnomedicinal benefits of T. repens have been well studied; however, the facets of the plant have not been explored yet. The current review outlines several bioactive compounds quantified from T. repens and a few of them namely quercetin, kaempferol, myricetin, acacetin and linamarin, have been reported to have biological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, antileishmanial, anti-inflammatory, antiaging and anti-hepatotoxic activities. A significant number of in vitro studies have been done on the plant extract, but little is known about the isolation and efficacy of the potent natural bioactive compounds of T. repens. The bioactive compounds in T. repens can be used for advanced drug development against various health disorders.

Phytoremediation is a biological soil remediation technique using plants and their associated microorganisms to clean-up contaminated soils and improve soils' quality. We tested whether a co-culture between Miscanthus x giganteus (MxG) and Trifolium repens L. would enhance the soil biological quality. The objective was to determine the influence of MxG in mono- and in co-culture with white clover on the soil microbial activity, biomass and density. MxG was tested in mono- and in co-culture with white clover in a mesocosm over 148 days. The microbial respiration (CO2 production), the microbial biomass and the microbial density of the technosol were measured. Results showed that MxG induced an increase in microbial activity in the technosol compared to the non-planted condition with the co-culture having a greater impact. Regarding the bacterial density, MxG in mono- and in co-culture significantly increased the 16S rDNA gene copy number. The co-culture increased the microbial biomass, the fungal density and stimulated the degrading bacterial population, contrary to the monoculture and the non-planted condition. We can conclude the co-culture between MxG and white clover was more interesting than MxG monoculture in regards to the technosol biological quality and its potential for PAH remediation improvement.


Our precedent results have shown the benefits of using Miscanthus x giganteus in association with Trifolium repens L. to improve polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons dissipation and decrease soil ecotoxicity compared to monocultures. In this study we focused on the plant species' influence on the soil's biological quality to improve MxG biomass productivity in the long term and phytoremediation. Many bioindicators were used such as microbial activity, microbial biomass as well as bacteria, fungi and PAH-degrading bacteria density.We showed it was more beneficial to use co-culture instead of MxG monoculture to improve biological technosol quality and in particular microbial activity and biomass as well as fungi and PAH-degrading bacteria density.

Abstract The development and reproductive potential of Spodoptera eridania (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) was compared on natural and artificial diets. Its biology was determined under laboratory conditions, providing an artificial diet, leaves of white clover and the peach cultivar 'Chimarrita' and fruits and leaves of the apple cultivar 'Gala'. Larvae of S. eridania could not complete their biological cycle when fed on apple fruits or peach leaves. The artificial diet provided the shortest development time, with a cycle of 28.5±0.14 days from egg to adult and 37.3% total viability. Apple leaves led to a longer development time from egg to adult (62.8±1.22 days) and lower total viability (23%) and white clover provided the highest total viability (54.3%). The results showed that S. eridania can use white clover and apple leaves to develop normally in apple orchards. The reduction of food sources such as white clover used by the larvae results in infestation and damage to fruits from "test bites".

A biologia de S. eridania foi determinada em condições de laboratório, comparando-se uma dieta artificial com folhas de trevo branco e de pêssego da cultivar 'Chimarrita' e frutos e folhas de maçã da cultivar 'Gala'. As larvas de S. eridania não puderam completar seu ciclo biológico quando alimentadas com frutas de maçã ou folhas de pêssego. A dieta artificial proporcionou o menor tempo de desenvolvimento, com um ciclo completo de 28,5 ± 0,14 dias de ovo a adulto e 37,3% de viabilidade total. As folhas de maçã levaram maior tempo de desenvolvimento de ovo a adulto (62,8 ± 1,22 dias) e menor viabilidade total (23%). O trevo branco apresentou a maior viabilidade total (54,3%). Os resultados mostraram que S. eridania pode usar trevo branco e folhas de maçã para se desenvolver normalmente em pomares de maçã. A redução de fontes alimentares, como o trevo branco usado pelas larvas, resulta em infestação e danos aos frutos através das "mordidas de prova".

O trevo branco é utilizado no Sul do Brasil conferindo qualidade nas pastagens ao qual se encontra, podendo ser maximizada a sua produção pelo manejo de macro e micronutrientes. Porém, alguns micronutrientes como o boro, possuem limites estreitos entre a deficiência e a toxicidade. Dessa forma, esse trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de doses de boro sobre a produção de forragem e componentes radiculares de trevo branco cultivadas em um Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação da Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná, localizada no Município de Pato Branco - PR. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com cinco repetições e os tratamentos consistiram de cinco níveis de boro (0; 0,5; 1; 2 e 4 kg ha-1). Foram avaliadas as características referentes à produção de raízes, nodulação e matéria seca da parte aérea em plantas de trevo branco. A adubação aumentou a produção de matéria seca de raízes, o número de nódulos e a matéria seca de nódulos até 2,8 kg de boro ha-1, resultando em maior produção de matéria seca de forragem. As maiores taxas, no entanto, apresentaram efeitos negativos sobre a produção de trevo branco, devido à sua toxicidade.


The white clover (Trifolium repens L.) is used in southern Brazil in giving quality pasture as you are and can be maximized by managing their production of macro and micronutrients. However, some micronutrients such as boron, have narrow limits between deficiency and toxicity. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of doses of boron application on the production of forage and root components of white clover grown on an Oxisol. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Federal Technological University of Parana, located in the city of Pato Branco - PR. The experimental design was completely randomized design with five replications and treatments consisted of five levels of boron (0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kg ha-1). We evaluated the characteristics concerning the production of roots, nodulation and dry matter of shoots of white clover plants. Fertilization increased the production of root dry weight, nodule number and nodule dry matter up to 2.8 kg ha-1 of boron, resulting in higher production of herbage. Higher rates, however, had negative effects on the production of white clover, due to its toxicity.

O trevo-branco (Trifolium repens L.) é uma forrageira utilizada na composição de sistemas de produção agropecuária. O objetivo do estudo foi investigar a seletividade de herbicidas em trevo-branco, aplicado no estádio fenológico de primeiro trifólio em expansão. Realizou-se um experimento em blocos casualizados, com 19 tratamentos e três repetições. Observou-se, aos 84 dias após a aplicação de bentazon + imazethapyr, imazethapyr, bentazon e 2,4-D fitointoxicação inferior a 25% e produção de massa seca da parte aérea superior a 1.300 kg ha-1, sendo a cultura do trevo-branco tolerante a esses produtos, quando aplicados em plântulas no estádio fenológico de primeiro trifólio em expansão.


White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is a forage used in the composition of crop system models. The objective of this study was to investigate the selectivity of herbicides on white clover seedlings, applied at the first trifoliate growth expanding. It was carried out an experiment in randomized blocks, with 19 treatments and three replications. White clover can be considered as tolerant to bentazon + imazethapyr, imazethapyr, bentazon and 2,4-D, because it was observed biomass production higher than 1.300 kg ha-1 in those treatments and phytotoxicity lower than 25% at 84 days after herbicides sprayed on seedling under phenological stage of plants expanding the first trifoliate.

A interferência das plantas daninhas é um dos principais fatores que influencia no estabelecimento das pastagens e, dentro das pastagens, o trevo branco é uma importante Fabaceae utilizada na alimentação animal. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar os períodos de interferência das plantas daninhas sobre o trevo branco, o qual foi submetido a períodos de convivência e de controle do mato. Foram realizados levantamentos fitossociológicos em cada período de convivência da cultura com a comunidade infestante e aos 119 dias para os períodos de controle de convívio. Os dados de produção de matéria seca de trevo branco foram ajustados ao modelo de regressão não linear sigmoidal de Boltzmann, adotando-se um nível de redução da produtividade de 5%. Os resultados revelaram que o período anterior à interferência (PAI) foi de 20 dias após a emergência (DAE), o período total, de prevenção à interferência, foi 82DAE e o período crítico, de prevenção à interferência, foi de 62 dias. As perdas de produtividade por matocompetição podem chegar a 96%, sendo necessário o controle das plantas daninhas aos 20DAE, prolongando-se até aos 62DAE.


Interference of weeds is a major factor influencing the establishment of pastures and rangeland in the white clover is an important Fabaceae used in animal feed. The objective of this study was to determine the periods of weed interference on the white clover, which was subjected to periods living and weed control. Phytosociological surveys were conducted in each period of coexistence of culture with weeds and 119 days for the control periods of conviviality. Data on dry matter production of white clover were adjusted to model nonlinear regression sigmoidal Boltzmann, adopting a tolerance level of yield reduction of 5%. The results revealed that the period before interference was 20 days after emergence (DAE), the total period of interference prevention was 82DAE and the critical period of interference prevention were 62 days. Productivity losses by weed competition can reach 96%, requiring weed control at 20DAE, extending up to 62DAE.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a produtividade e o valor nutritivo de dois sistemas forrageiros (SF) constituídos por capim elefante (CE), azevém (AZ), trevo branco (TB) e espécies de crescimento espontâneo (ECE), como SF1; e CE + AZ + amendoim forrageiro (AF) + ECE, como SF2. O CE foi estabelecido em linhas espaçadas a cada quatro metros. Entre elas, foi estabelecido azevém, durante o período hibernal, permitindo-se o desenvolvimento de ECE no período estival. Para avaliação, foram utilizadas vacas da raça Holandesa e o método de pastejo foi o rotacionado. Avaliaram-se a massa de forragem inicial (MFI) e a composição botânica e estrutural dos pastos. Para as estimativas de valor nutritivo, foram feitas amostragens simulando o pastejo e analisados a fibra em detergente neutro (FDN), fibra em detergente ácido (FDA), proteína bruta (PB), digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca (DIVMS) e digestibilidade in vitro da matéria orgânica (DIVMO). O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com dois tratamentos e duas repetições, em parcelas subdivididas no tempo. Os valores médios de massa de forragem inicial e da carga animal foram similares entre os SF. Observou-se resultado superior para o teor médio de PB da forragem do SF2. O uso do azevém, das leguminosas e das espécies de crescimento espontâneo em consórcio com o CE permite manter massa de forragem uniforme no decorrer dos pastejos.


The objective of this research was to evaluate the productivity and nutritive value of two pasture-based systems (PS) with elephant grass (EG) + ryegrass (RG) + white clover (WC) + spontaneous growing species (SGS), for PS1; and EG + RG + forage peanut (FP) + SGS, for PS2. EG was established in rows spaced by four meters. Ryegrass was seeding in the space between rows during cool-season and development of SGS was permitted in the warm-season. Holstein cows under rotational grazing were used in the evaluation. The initial forage mass (IFM), the botanical composition and the structural components were evaluated. Samples from hand-plucking method were collected to analyze neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude protein (CP), in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD). The experimental design used was completely randomized with two treatments, two repetitions in complete split-plot time. The mean values of initial forage mass and stocking rate were similar among PS. Superior results were found for mean of CP in PS2. The use of ryegrass, legumes and spontaneous growing species mixed to EG allow the forage mass to be uniform during the grazing pastures.

Realizou-se o presente trabalho com o objetivo de avaliar a composição química de dois sistemas forrageiros, tendo como componentes comuns o capim-elefante, o azevém e as espécies de crescimento espontâneo, variando em um sistema o consórcio com o trevo branco, e, em outro, com o amendoim forrageiro. Para avaliação, foram usados quatro piquetes com 0,25ha cada um. Como animais experimentais, foram utilizadas vacas em lactação da raça Holandesa. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com dois tratamentos (sistemas forrageiros) e duas repetições (piquetes). Para análise de proteína bruta (PB), fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e fibra em detergente ácido (FDA), foram retiradas amostras através de simulação de pastejo. A participação dos componentes dos sistemas forrageiros variou segundo as leguminosas componentes. O sistema composto por amendoim forrageiro permitiu suportar maior carga no período estival. Os valores médios (pré e pós-pastejo) para PB, FDN e FDA foram de 18,76; 71,46; 34,87 por cento para o sistema forrageiro constituído com o trevo branco e de 19,31; 71,19 e 35,40 por cento. Os resultados foram similares entre os sistemas forrageiros.


The aim of this research was to evaluate the chemical composition of two pasture-based systems having as common components the elephantgrass, ryegrass and spontaneous growth species, in one system the white clover and, in another system, the forage peanut. Four paddocks, each one with 0.25ha, were used in the evaluation. Holstein cows were used in the evaluation. The experimental design was completely randomized, with two treatments (pasture-based systems), two replications (paddocks). To analyze the crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF), hand-plucked samples were collected. Composition of forage systems changes according to its legumes compounds. Forage peanut system allowed a greater stocking rate in hot season. The mean values (pregraze and postgraze) of CP, NDF and ADF, were 18.76; 71.46 and 34.87 percent to the pasture-based system with white clover and 19.31; 71.19 and 35.40 percent to the system with forage peanut, respectively. Similar results were observed for the pasture systems.
