RESUMEN

Environmental exposures and community characteristics have been linked to accelerated lung function decline in people with cystic fibrosis (CF), but geomarkers, the measurements of these exposures, have not been comprehensively evaluated in a single study. To determine which geomarkers have the greatest predictive potential for lung function decline and pulmonary exacerbation (PEx), a retrospective longitudinal cohort study was performed using novel Bayesian joint covariate selection methods, which were compared with respect to PEx predictive accuracy. Non-stationary Gaussian linear mixed effects models were fitted to data from 151 CF patients aged 6-20 receiving care at a CF Center in the midwestern US (2007-2017). The outcome was forced expiratory volume in 1 s of percent predicted (FEV1pp). Target functions were used to predict PEx from established criteria. Covariates included 11 routinely collected clinical/demographic characteristics and 45 geomarkers comprising 8 categories. Unique covariate selections via four Bayesian penalized regression models (elastic-net, adaptive lasso, ridge, and lasso) were evaluated at both 95 % and 90 % credible intervals (CIs). Resultant models included one to 6 geomarkers (air temperature, percentage of tertiary roads outside urban areas, percentage of impervious nonroad outside urban areas, fine atmospheric particulate matter, fraction achieving high school graduation, and motor vehicle theft) representing weather, impervious descriptor, air pollution, socioeconomic status, and crime categories. Adaptive lasso had the lowest information criteria. For PEx predictive accuracy, covariate selection from the 95 % CI elastic-net had the highest area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (mean ± standard deviation; 0.780 ± 0.026) along with the 95 % CI ridge and lasso methods (0.780 ± 0.027). The 95 % CI elastic-net had the highest sensitivity (0.773 ± 0.083) while the 95 % CI adaptive lasso had the highest specificity (0.691 ± 0.087), suggesting the need for different geomarker sets depending on monitoring goals. Surveillance of certain geomarkers embedded in prediction algorithms can be used in real-time warning systems for PEx onset.

Evaluation of the ecological health of rivers requires a focused examination of how biological indicators respond to chemical stressors to offer key insights for effective conservation strategies. We examined the influence of stressors on aquatic ecosystems by analyzing various ecological entities and biotic integrity metrics of fish communities. A nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) approach was applied to determine scores based on 19 fish ecological entities (FEs) and a fish-based multi-metric index of biotic integrity (mIBI-F). The composition of fish communities in reference clusters differed from the disturbed clusters due to instream chemical stressors. These chemical stressors, including high levels of nutrients, organic matter, and ionic/suspended solids, were linked to variation in the key indicator FEs, whose guild identities were closely associated with instream chemical degradation. The scores of FEs (abundance weighted) and mIBI-F metrics in the first NMDS axis (NMDS1) were significantly linked with chemical health indicators (p < 0.001), such as total phosphorus (R2 = 0.67 and 0.47), electrical conductivity (R2 = 0.59 and 0.49), and chlorophyll-a (R2 = 0.48 and 0.25). These NMDS1 scores showed better accuracy than the conventional mIBI-F score in capturing river ecological health linked with chemical health status as determined by a multi-metric index of water pollution. Our study suggests that based on the ordination approach, the biological integrity of these systems reflected the chemical health.

Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease but is greatly impacted by non-genetic (social/environmental and stochastic) influences. Some people with CF experience rapid decline, a precipitous drop in lung function relative to patient- and/or center-level norms. Those who experience rapid decline in early adulthood, compared to adolescence, typically exhibit less severe clinical disease but greater loss of lung function. The extent to which timing and degree of rapid decline are informed by social and environmental determinants of health (geomarkers) is unknown. Methods: A longitudinal cohort study was performed (24,228 patients, aged 6-21 years) using the U.S. CF Foundation Patient Registry. Geomarkers at the ZIP Code Tabulation Area level measured air pollution/respiratory hazards, greenspace, crime, and socioeconomic deprivation. A composite score quantifying social-environmental adversity was created and used in covariate-adjusted functional principal component analysis, which was applied to cluster longitudinal lung function trajectories. Results: Social-environmental phenotyping yielded three primary phenotypes that corresponded to early, middle, and late timing of peak decline in lung function over age. Geographic differences were related to distinct cultural and socioeconomic regions. Extent of peak decline, estimated as forced expiratory volume in 1 s of % predicted/year, ranged from 2.8 to 4.1 % predicted/year depending on social-environmental adversity. Middle decliners with increased social-environmental adversity experienced rapid decline 14.2 months earlier than their counterparts with lower social-environmental adversity, while timing was similar within other phenotypes. Early and middle decliners experienced mortality peaks during early adolescence and adulthood, respectively. Conclusion: While early decliners had the most severe CF lung disease, middle and late decliners lost more lung function. Higher social-environmental adversity associated with increased risk of rapid decline and mortality during young adulthood among middle decliners. This sub-phenotype may benefit from enhanced lung-function monitoring and personalized secondary environmental health interventions to mitigate chemical and non-chemical stressors.

Dinoflagellates are important primary producers known to form Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs). In water, nutrient availability, pH, salinity and anthropogenic contamination constitute chemical stressors for them. The emergence of OMICs approaches propelled our understanding of dinoflagellates' responses to stressors. However, in dinoflagellates, these approaches are still biased, as transcriptomic approaches are largely conducted compared to proteomic and metabolomic approaches. Furthermore, integrated OMICs approaches are just emerging. Here, we report recent contributions of the different OMICs approaches to the investigation of dinoflagellates' responses to chemical stressors and discuss the current challenges we need to face to push studies further despite the lack of genomic resources available for dinoflagellates.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analysed in the sediments of one of the most well-preserved estuaries in South Brazil, the Paranaguá Estuarine System (PES), using several source apportionment tools. The ∑PAH ranged from < DL to 125.6 ng g-1 dw (dry weight) (average 29.9 ± 26.1 ng g-1 dw), and the lowest levels detected were similar to those found in other protected areas of the world. In general, the PAH concentrations indicated excellent environmental quality for the entire estuary. Principal component analysis indicated that fine sediments and total organic carbon were the main factors controlling PAH concentrations in the PES. Multiple PAH sources were identified in the study area; biomass burning and fossil fuel combustion predominated but considerable amounts of petrogenic residues were also observed. We identified evidence of a contribution from an adjacent watershed resulting from the construction of interconnections between large rivers and from years of intense deforestation in the local Atlantic Forest.

Animals often exhibit consistent-individual differences (CIDs) in boldness/fearfulness, typically studied in the context of predation risk. We focus here on fear generalization, where fear of one danger (e.g., predators) is correlated with fear of other dangers (e.g., humans, pathogens, moving vehicles, or fire). We discuss why fear generalization should be ecologically important, and why we expect fear to correlate across disparate dangers. CIDs in fear are well studied for some dangers in some taxa (e.g., human fear of pathogens), but not well studied for most dangers. Fear of some dangers has been found to correlate with general fearfulness, but some cases where we might expect correlated fears (e.g., between fear of humans, familiar predators, and exotic predators) are surprisingly understudied.

Background: Racial and ethnic disparities persist in preterm birth (PTB) and gestational age (GA) at delivery in the United States. It remains unclear whether exposure to environmental chemicals contributes to these disparities. Objectives: We applied recent methodologies incorporating environmental mixtures as mediators in causal mediation analysis to examine whether racial and ethnic disparities in GA at delivery and PTB may be partially explained by exposures to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a class of chemicals used as flame retardants in the United States. Methods: Data from a multiracial/ethnic US cohort of 2008 individuals with low-risk singleton pregnancies were utilized, with plasma PBDE concentrations measured during early pregnancy. We performed mediation analyses incorporating three forms of mediators: (1) reducing all PBDEs to a weighted index, (2) selecting a PBDE congener, or (3) including all congeners simultaneously as multiple mediators, to evaluate whether PBDEs may contribute to the racial and ethnic disparities in PTB and GA at delivery, adjusted for potential confounders. Results: Among the 2008 participants, 552 self-identified as non-Hispanic White, 504 self-identified as non-Hispanic Black, 568 self-identified as Hispanic, and 384 self-identified as Asian/Pacific Islander. The non-Hispanic Black individuals had the highest mean ∑PBDEs, the shortest mean GA at delivery, and the highest rate of PTB. Overall, the difference in GA at delivery comparing non-Hispanic Black to non-Hispanic White women was -0.30 (95% CI: -0.54, -0.05) weeks. This disparity reduced to -0.23 (95% CI: -0.49, 0.02) and -0.18 (95% CI: -0.46, 0.10) weeks if fixing everyone's weighted index of PBDEs to the median and the 25th percentile levels, respectively. The proportion of disparity mediated by the weighted index of PBDEs was 11.8%. No statistically significant mediation was found for PTB, other forms of mediator(s), or other racial and ethnic groups. Conclusion: PBDE mixtures may partially mediate the Black vs. White disparity in GA at delivery. While further validations are needed, lowering the PBDEs at the population level might help reduce this disparity.

BACKGROUND: In February 2021, over one hundred scientists and policy experts participated in a web-based Workshop to discuss the ways that divergent evaluations of evidence and scientific uncertainties are used to delay timely protection of human health and the environment from exposures to hazardous agents. The Workshop arose from a previous workshop organized by the European Environment Agency (EEA) in 2008 and which also drew on case studies from the EEA reports on 'Late Lessons from Early Warnings' (2001, 2013). These reports documented dozens of hazardous agents including many chemicals, for which risk reduction measures were delayed for decades after scientists and others had issued early and later warnings about the harm likely to be caused by those agents. RESULTS: Workshop participants used recent case studies including Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), Extremely Low Frequency - Electrical Magnetic Fields (ELF-EMF fields), glyphosate, and Bisphenol A (BPA) to explore myriad reasons for divergent outcomes of evaluations, which has led to delayed and inadequate protection of the public's health. Strategies to overcome these barriers must, therefore, at a minimum include approaches that 1) Make better use of existing data and information, 2) Ensure timeliness, 3) Increase transparency, consistency and minimize bias in evidence evaluations, and 4) Minimize the influence of financial conflicts of interest. CONCLUSION: The recommendations should enhance the production of "actionable evidence," that is, reliable evaluations of the scientific evidence to support timely actions to protect health and environments from exposures to hazardous agents. The recommendations are applicable to policy and regulatory settings at the local, state, federal and international levels.

During the 2015-2016 Zika Virus (ZIKV) epidemic in Brazil, the geographical distributions of ZIKV infection and microcephaly outbreaks did not align. This raised doubts about the virus as the single cause of the microcephaly outbreak and led to research hypotheses of alternative explanatory factors, such as environmental variables and factors, agrochemical use, or immunizations. We investigated context and the intermediate and structural determinants of health inequalities, as well as social environment factors, to determine their interaction with ZIKV-positive- and ZIKV-negative-related microcephaly. The results revealed the identification of 382 associations among 382 nonredundant variables of Zika surveillance, including multiple determinants of environmental public health factors and variables obtained from 5565 municipalities in Brazil. This study compared those factors and variables directly associated with microcephaly incidence positive to ZIKV and those associated with microcephaly incidence negative to ZIKV, respectively, and mapped them in case and control subnetworks. The subnetworks of factors and variables associated with low birth weight and birthweight where birth incidence served as an additional control were also mapped. Non-significant differences in factors and variables were observed, as were weights of associations between microcephaly incidence, both positive and negative to ZIKV, which revealed diagnostic inaccuracies that translated to the underestimation of the scope of the ZIKV outbreak. A detailed analysis of the patterns of association does not support a finding that vaccinations contributed to microcephaly, but it does raise concerns about the use of agrochemicals as a potential factor in the observed neurotoxicity arising from the presence of heavy metals in the environment and microcephaly not associated with ZIKV. Summary: A comparative network inferential analysis of the patterns of variables and factors associated with Zika virus infections in Brazil during 2015-2016 coinciding with a microcephaly epidemic identified multiple contributing determinants. This study advances our understanding of the cumulative interactive effects of exposures to chemical and non-chemical stressors in the built, natural, physical, and social environments on adverse pregnancy and health outcomes in vulnerable populations.

Humans are exposed to a diverse mixture of chemical and non-chemical exposures across their lifetimes. Well-designed epidemiology studies as well as sophisticated exposure science and related technologies enable the investigation of the health impacts of mixtures. While existing statistical methods can address the most basic questions related to the association between environmental mixtures and health endpoints, there were gaps in our ability to learn from mixtures data in several common epidemiologic scenarios, including high correlation among health and exposure measures in space and/or time, the presence of missing observations, the violation of important modeling assumptions, and the presence of computational challenges incurred by current implementations. To address these and other challenges, NIEHS initiated the Powering Research through Innovative methods for Mixtures in Epidemiology (PRIME) program, to support work on the development and expansion of statistical methods for mixtures. Six independent projects supported by PRIME have been highly productive but their methods have not yet been described collectively in a way that would inform application. We review 37 new methods from PRIME projects and summarize the work across previously published research questions, to inform methods selection and increase awareness of these new methods. We highlight important statistical advancements considering data science strategies, exposure-response estimation, timing of exposures, epidemiological methods, the incorporation of toxicity/chemical information, spatiotemporal data, risk assessment, and model performance, efficiency, and interpretation. Importantly, we link to software to encourage application and testing on other datasets. This review can enable more informed analyses of environmental mixtures. We stress training for early career scientists as well as innovation in statistical methodology as an ongoing need. Ultimately, we direct efforts to the common goal of reducing harmful exposures to improve public health.

The cumulative exposure to chemical and non-chemical stressors may have an impact on birth outcomes. The aim of this study is to examine the cumulative exposure of a mixture of chemicals (mercury, lead, selenium and tin) and non-chemical stressors (social support, perceived stress, probable depression and BMI) on birth outcomes (birthweight, gestational age at birth, and Apgar score at 5 min). The study population is a subset (n = 384) of the Caribbean Consortium for Research in Environmental and Occupational Health-MeKiTamara prospective cohort study. Associations between the latent chemical construct, non-chemical stressors and birth outcomes were assessed using path models. The results showed a significant direct relationship between perceived stress and birthweight (ß = -0.17), however even though the relationship between perceived stress and depression was significant in all three path models (ß = 0.61), the association between depression and birth outcomes was not significant. Perceived stress was significantly associated with community engagement (ß = -0.12) and individual resilience (ß = -0.12). BMI (ß = 0.12) was also significantly directly associated with birthweight. The latent chemical construct did not show an association with the birth outcomes. Our data indicate the need for the development of a support system for pregnant women by involving them in prenatal care programs to reduce maternal stress, which may also influence depression and (in)directly improve the birth outcomes. Interventions regarding weight management for women of childbearing age are necessary to halt obesity and its negative effects on birth outcomes.

Prenatal maternal exposure to air pollution may cause adverse health effects in offspring, potentially through altered immune responses. Maternal psychosocial distress can also alter immune function and may increase gestational vulnerability to air pollution exposure. We investigated whether prenatal exposure to air pollution is associated with altered immune responses in cord blood mononuclear cells (CBMCs) and potential modification by maternal depression in 463 women recruited in early pregnancy (1999-2001) into the Project Viva longitudinal cohort. We estimated black carbon (BC), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), residential proximity to major roadways, and near-residence traffic density, averaged over pregnancy. Women reported depressive symptoms in mid-pregnancy (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) and depression history by questionnaire. Immune responses were assayed by concentrations of three cytokines (IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α), in unstimulated or stimulated (phytohemagglutinin (PHA), cockroach extract (Bla g 2), house dust mite extract (Der f 1)) CBMCs. Using multivariable linear or Tobit regression analyses, we found that CBMCs production of IL-6, TNF-a, and IL-10 were all lower in mothers exposed to higher levels of PM2.5 during pregnancy. A suggestive but not statistically significant pattern of lower cord blood cytokine concentrations from ever (versus never) depressed women exposed to PM2.5, BC, or traffic was also observed and warrants further study.

The present study tested the biological consequences of exposure to a multimetal mixture as a multiple chemical stressor on Oncorhynchus mykiss at molecular, cellular, physiological and whole-organism levels and on biomarker responses of this fish during the depuration period. To represent environmentally relevant multiple chemical stressors, in our study, we used the mixture of Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb and Cd at the concentrations corresponding to Maximum-Permissible-Concentrations (MPCs) acceptable for the EU inland waters. This study was undertaken with a view to elucidate if changes in the MPC of the test mixture components (Ni, Pb, Cd) could cause significantly different biomarker responses in O. mykiss from those previously determined in the carnivorous and omnivorous fishes exposed to the mixture of the same metals but at different MPCs of Ni, Pb and Cd. This study has revealed that exposure to mixtures of metals at MPC produces genotoxic effects in fish blood erythrocytes and a lethargic effect on O. mykiss behaviour, and, also, significantly increases the levels of Cd, Cr and Ni accumulated in the gills tissue. O. mykiss successfully depurated Cr and Ni in less than 28 days, however, the level of Cd decreased by only approximately 40% over the same period. A significant capacity of O. mykiss to restore its DNA integrity (Comet assay) after exposure to metal mixtures was revealed. However, the 28-day recovery period proved to be insufficiently long for erythrocytes with nuclear abnormalities to recover to the unexposed level. In conclusion, changes in the MPCs of Ni, Pb and Cd in the test mixture produce biological effects similar to those previously determined in S. salar, R. rutilus and P. fluviatilis exposed to the mixture of the same metals but at lower MPCs of Ni and Pb and at higher MPC of Cd.

Chemical stressors co-occur in mixtures into watercourses and this complicates predicting their effects on their ecological status. Our knowledge of river basin specific pollutants (RBSPs) is still limited, but it remains necessary to ensure the good chemical and ecological status. We performed an exercise on Mediterranean river sites exposed to urban and industrial pressures in order to, i) prioritize the occurring chemicals, ii) assessing the site's specific chemical risk (RQsite), and iii) relating the chemical risk to the biological quality, using as evidences invertebrates and diatom indices. Mediterranean rivers suffer from strong pressures which lead to a poor dilution ability, which makes the inhabiting biota highly vulnerable. The most frequent pollutants in the 89 sites surveyed included pharmaceutical products such as the antibiotics azithromycin, clarithromycin, and erythromycin, and the anti-inflammatory diclofenac, and products of industrial origin such as perfluorinated PFOS, nickel, and nonylphenol. Both the diatom index IPS and the macroinvertebrate index IBMWP hold strong negative correlations to RQsite, indicating a significant contribution of chemicals to biological impairment. Chemical contaminants (but not nutrients or dissolved organic carbon) were associated with significant changes to the taxonomic composition of invertebrate communities, but not to that of diatom communities. Our analyses indeed reveal that the impact of co-occurring chemicals translates onto negative effects in the biological quality. Our approach may be of use to evidence impacts on water resources and water quality in rivers under strong human pressure.

There is much debate around promoting waste to energy incineration facilities in many communities globally, mainly because of social opposition against potential negative health effects of the operation of these installations close to urban areas. In this paper, a novel decision support approach is developed and its applicability is demonstrated for the greater Thessaloniki area, Greece. In this area, the incineration facilities are hotly debated, mainly due to the "Not In My Back Yard" syndrome related with health considerations. The exclusive method of treatment is landfilling. Health impacts and corresponding externalities attributed to the operation of an incineration facility are reliably estimated. Three potential alternative sites and three scenarios of emission rates are considered, depending on the abatement technology used. The estimated externalities are compared to the corresponding ones attributed to other pressures in the area. The "Years of Life Lost (YOLL)" indicator attributed to the operation of the facility is 2.8 YOLL in the worst-case scenario. This corresponds to a minimal added implication in comparison with the 11,044 YOLL estimated for the area due to the other environmental pressures (road traffic, space heating, industrial activity). The externalities ratio (externalities due to incineration facility/total externalities) for the region is approximately 0.03%. Thus, the impact of this operation on human health is negligible -and preferable to landfilling- even in the case that maximum emission rates are considered. Efforts should be targeted towards enhancing public awareness and militating the widely acknowledged "Not In My Back Yard" syndrome by local communities.

Background: Children are exposed to chemical and non-chemical stressors from their built, natural, and social environments. Research is needed to advance our scientific understanding of non-chemical stressors, evaluate how they alter the biological response to a chemical stressor, and determine how they impact children's health and well-being. To do this, we conducted a state-of-the-science review of non-chemical stressors found in a child's social environment. Methods: Studies eligible for inclusion in this review were identified through a search of the peer-reviewed literature using PubMed and PsycINFO. Combinations of words associated with non-chemical stressors and children were used to form search strings. Filters were used to limit the search to studies published in peer-reviewed journals from 2000-2016 and written in English. Publications found using the search strings and filters went through two rounds of screening. Results: A total of 146 studies met the inclusion criteria. From these studies, 245 non-chemical stressors were evaluated. The non-chemical stressors were then organized into 13 general topic areas: acculturation, adverse childhood experiences, economic, education, family dynamics, food, greenspace, neighborhood, social, stress, urbanicity, violence, and other. Additional information on health outcomes, studies evaluating both chemical and non-chemical stressors, and animal studies are provided. This review provides evidence that non-chemical stressors found in a child's social environment do influence their health and well-being in both beneficial (e.g., salutatory effects of greenspace and social support) and adverse (e.g., poor relationships between health and selected non-chemical stressors such as economics, educational attainment, exposure to violence, stress) ways. Conclusions: This literature review identified a paucity of studies addressing the combined effects of chemical and non-chemical stressors and children's health and well-being. This literature review was further complicated by inconsistencies in terminology, methodologies, and the value of non-chemical stressor research in different scientific disciplines. Despite these limitations, this review showed the importance of considering non-chemical stressors from a child's social environment when addressing children's environmental health considerations.

Purpose: A number of nuclear and radiological sources have contributed or are still contributing to the release of a series of stressors such as radionuclides in combination with trace metals and even organic chemicals. To assess the impact of mixed contamination, a limited number of stressors are usually evaluated one by one. We have therefore evaluated the benefit of using the multiple stressor concept focusing on key topics within radioecology such as the source term and deposition, ecosystem interactions and exposure, biological uptake and effects including adverse outcome pathways (AOPs), as a basis for assessing impact and risk. Materials and methods: We have extracted information from highly relevant scientific articles (e.g. Web of Science) describing multiple stressor exposure experiments where at least one stressor is ionizing radioactivity such as low dose gamma radiation or radionuclides (e.g. fission or activation products; uranium and daughter nuclides). In addition, experiences obtained during recent years at the author´s laboratories are included in the discussions, especially when it comes to speciation issues, combined effects, risk estimates, and AOPs. Results: The multiple stressor concept is not only related to the total concentration of a series of radionuclides and other stressors released from one source or from different sources, but also related to the presence of different physico-chemical forms of individual radionuclides. Due to interactions, the ecosystem transfer to biota is dynamic, and the application of toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics considerations seems most useful. Although there is a limited number of articles dealing with multiple stressors in which ionizing radiation is included as one of the stressors, deviation from concentration (dose) additive responses should probably be expected, especially under field conditions where additional abiotic as well as biotic interactions take place Conclusions: Following severe nuclear events, releases can be described as a massive multiple stressor exposure containing radionuclides combined with other stressors. Thus, advanced characterization technologies are needed for parameterization of the mixed stressor source term as input to ecosystem transport, dose, and impact models. To reduce uncertainties in assessments of these complex exposures, advanced technologies and computational efforts to link internal distributions to responses are also needed to understand how multiple stressor exposure could affect toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics, and why combined exposures could depart from additivity along the source-adverse outcome continuum.

Freshwaters are among the most endangered ecosystems worldwide, due predominantly to excessive anthropogenic practices compromising the future provisioning of ecosystem services. Despite increased awareness of the role of multiple stressors in accounting for ecological degradation in mixed land-use stream systems, risk assessment approaches applicable in field settings are still required. This study provides a first indication for ecological consequences of the interaction of organic and inorganic chemical stressors, not typically evaluated together, which may provide a missing link enabling the reconnection of chemical and ecological findings. Specifically, impaired ecological conditions - represented by lower abundance of meiobenthic individuals - were observed in the hyporheic zone where a contaminant groundwater plume discharged to the stream. These zones were characterized by high xenobiotic organic concentrations, and strongly reduced groundwater (e.g. elevated dissolved iron and arsenic) linked to the dissolution of iron hydroxides (iron reduction) caused by the degradation of xenobiotic compounds in the plume. Further research is still needed to separate whether impact is driven by a combined effect of organic and inorganic stressors impacting the ecological communities, or whether the conditions - when present simultaneously - are responsible for enabling a specific chemical stressor's availability (e.g. trace metals), and thus toxicity, along the study stream. Regardless, these findings suggest that benthic meioinvertebrates are promising indicators for supporting biological assessments of stream systems to sufficiently represent impacts resulting from the co-occurrence of stressors in different stream compartments. Importantly, identification of the governing circumstances is crucial for revealing key patterns and impact drivers that may be needed in correctly prioritizing stressor impacts in these systems. This study further highlights the importance of stream-aquifer interfaces for investigating chemical stressor effects in multiple stressor systems. This will require holistic approaches for linking contaminant hydrogeology and eco(toxico)logy in order to positively influence the sustainable management of water resources globally.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this review is to identify cumulative modeling methods used to evaluate combined effects of exposures to environmental chemicals and social stressors. The specific review question is: What are the existing quantitative methods used to examine the cumulative impacts of exposures to environmental chemical and social stressors on health? RECENT FINDINGS: There has been an increase in literature that evaluates combined effects of exposures to environmental chemicals and social stressors on health using regression models; very few studies applied other data mining and machine learning techniques to this problem. The majority of studies we identified used regression models to evaluate combined effects of multiple environmental and social stressors. With proper study design and appropriate modeling assumptions, additional data mining methods may be useful to examine combined effects of environmental and social stressors.
