RESUMEN

Nonsense mutations in the coding region turn amino acid codons into termination codons, resulting in premature termination codons (PTCs). In the case of the in-frame PTC, if translation does not stop at the PTC but continues to the natural termination codon (NTC) with the insertion of an amino acid, known as readthrough, the full-length peptide is formed, albeit with a single amino acid mutation. We have previously developed the functionality-transfer oligonucleotide (FT-Probe), which forms a hybrid complex with RNA of a complementary sequence to transfer the functional group, resulting in modification of the 4-amino group of cytosine or the 6-amino group of adenine. In this study, the FT-Probe was used to chemically modify the adenosines of the PTC (UAA, UAG, and UGA) of mRNA, which were assayed for the readthrough in a reconstituted Escherichia coli translation system. The third adenosine-modified UAA produced three readthrough peptides incorporating tyrosine, glutamine and lysine at the UAA site. It should be noted that the additional modification with a cyclodextrin only induced glutamine incorporation. The adenosine modified UGA induced readthrough very efficiently with selective tryptophan incorporation. Readthrough of the modified UGA is caused by inhibition of the RF2 function. This study has demonstrated that the chemical modification of the adenosine 6-amino group of the PTC is a strategy for effective readthrough in a prokaryotic translation system.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on pain, functionality, quality of life, and analgesic consumption in patients undergoing TKR. DESIGN: A single center, randomized controlled trial. METHODS: A total of 52 participants were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 26) and control (n = 26) groups. The intervention group was exposed to conventional TENS. Data were collected with a Patient Identification Form, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), the Quality of Life Scale (SF-36), and the Analgesic Tracking Form. RESULTS: VAS and WOMAC scores significantly decreased in the intervention group, over time, while they increased in the control group. SF-36 scores significantly increased in the intervention group over time. It was determined that analgesic consumption was significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: TENS significantly reduced pain and increased functionality and quality of life. Our findings suggest that TENS may be an effective adjunctive analgesic therapy in patients receiving TKR; however, more testing is needed in larger and more heterogeneous populations. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Nurses can provide effective postoperative pain control in patients undergoing TKR, increase functionality, accelerate the healing process, and improve their quality of life by using TENS, a non-pharmacological treatment method, in the perioperative period.

There has been considerable recent interest in and reference to body neutrality, despite limited scholarship on differences from existing constructs. Our study examined perceptions of body neutrality in 229 individuals (researchers, clinicians, eating disorder lived experience, general community). Questions explored definitions of body neutrality, its similarity and differences to other concepts, perceived benefits and risks of adopting a body neutrality approach, and ratings on the usefulness of proposed components. Participants defined body neutrality as adopting an accepting, non-judgemental approach to one's body, de-emphasising the importance of appearance, and viewing the body as a vessel that carries a person through life. Perceived benefits included it being more accessible than existing approaches and a useful coping strategy, while risks were that neutrality can be difficult to adopt in an appearance focused society and that it may prompt an apathetic response to self-care. Body neutrality was rated as conceptually similar to functionality appreciation, body acceptance, and body compassion, and definitions consistent with these terms were rated most favourably. Our findings show how body neutrality is perceived and used by experts and the general community. However, we question whether this conceptualisation is distinct from existing positive body image concepts.

Writing tasks that encourage an appreciation of body functionality can improve women's body image and may buffer against negative effects of idealised media exposure. However, no research has examined whether these tasks can serve as a coping strategy after idealised exposure. To this end, young adult women (N = 217, Mage = 21.63) recruited from an Australian university and general community completed a writing task after idealised media exposure, with state body image measures taken at baseline, post-exposure, and post-task. Women were randomly allocated to one of three writing tasks and asked to appreciate their body functionality, to focus on the previously viewed images (rumination), or to describe a frequently travelled route (distraction). Improvements on outcome measures were equally found across both the functionality and distraction condition. Only body appreciation uniquely improved in the functionality condition. The functionality task was rated more helpful but also more challenging. These findings add to the evidence base regarding the usefulness of functionality-based writing tasks for improving women's body image. They can offer immediate benefits when experiencing body image distress, as can distraction, and future research should explore their utility in driving more sustained and deeper ways of engaging with one's body long-term.

Alternative protein sources have been required to meet the significant plant protein demand. Agro-industrial by-products such as leaves have considerable potential as a source of macromolecules once they are mostly discarded as waste. The current study evaluated dried cassava leaves as a protein source. First, alkaline extraction parameters (solid-liquid ratio, pH, and temperature) were optimized and the run that result in the highest protein yield were acidified at pH 2.5 or 4. The influence of carbohydrate solubilized on protein precipitation was also evaluated by removing it via alcoholic extraction prior to precipitation. The experimental design showed that high pH and temperature conditions associated with a low solid-liquid ratio led to increased protein yields. The presence of carbohydrates in the supernatant significantly influenced protein precipitation. The protein concentrate had around 17.51% protein when it was obtained from a supernatant with carbohydrates, while protein content increased to 26.88% when it was obtained from carbohydrate-free supernatant. The precipitation pH also influenced protein content, whereas protein content significantly decreased when pH increased from 2.5 to 4. The natural interaction between carbohydrates and proteins from cassava leaves positively influenced the emulsion stability index and the foaming capacity and stability. Thus, the presented results bring insights into challenges in extracting and precipitation proteins from agro-industrial by-products.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) can have several consequences on sexual function, which can lead to worsened quality of life. AIM: The study sought to assess sexual function and its association with health functionality and quality of life in females with PAH. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in pulmonary circulation outpatient clinics from January 2022 to March 2023 in females diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. Assessment was carried out through the application of the Female Sexual Function Index, the 36-item World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule, and the Medical Outcome Study 36-Item Short Form Survey. OUTCOMES: Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0 and JASP, and Spearman's correlation tests were applied between the instruments, with a P value <.05 considered significant. RESULTS: A total of 91 females were assessed. It was identified that 90.1% of females had sexual dysfunction, with worse scores in females with sexual dysfunction in the domains of satisfaction, arousal, and desire, with average health functionality and quality of life. There were significant correlations between the domains of mobility, getting along, life activities, and the overall functionality score with some domains of sexual function, especially arousal and satisfaction. We found significant correlations between some domains of quality-of-life assessment with the domains of desire, arousal, and satisfaction, and with the overall score of sexual function assessment, as well as strong correlations between health functionality and quality of life. CLINICAL IMPLICATION: The data reinforce the need for rehabilitation programs and social support for this population. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: This is one of the few studies to evaluate sexual function, quality of life, and health functionality in women with PAH. Due to limitations in data collection, we were unable to assess certain factors such as hormone levels and a history of sexual abuse. CONCLUSION: We identified a high prevalence of sexual dysfunction in females with PAH with mild functional impairment and a moderate quality-of-life score with correlations between sexual function, health functionality, and quality of life.

The objective of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of dietary supplementation of muramidase (MUR) and 2 phytogenic additives on the growth performance, intestinal morphology, bacteria load, and production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) of broiler chickens raised under field-like conditions. A total of 6,400 day-old Ross 308 broiler chicks were randomly selected and distributed into 32 floor pens, with 200 chicks (100 males and 100 females)/pen. The treatment groups were an unsupplemented control, and the experimental groups supplemented with MUR at 35,000 LSU(F)/kg of feed, phytogenic 1 (Phyto 1, based on thymol) at 100g/ton feed, or phytogenic 2 (Phyto 2, based on alkaloids) at 60g/ton feed, for a total period of 41 d. A 4-phase feeding program was applied (starter, grower, finisher and withdrawal). The paramenters evaluated were: growth performance, carcass yield, concentration of muranic acid in the jejunum content and excreta, liver enzyme concentration, intestinal morphology, and bacteria enumeration and short and branch chain fatty acids (SCFA and BCFA) in the cecal content. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test was used to separate the means. Soluble muramic acid (MurN) in the jejunum increased with the supplementation of MUR and Phyto 2 when compared to the other groups (P = 0.0001), but only the supplementation of MUR increased the concentration of MurN in the excreta. The supplementation of all feed additives improved the body weight gain and the body weight corrected feed conversion ratio when compared to the control group (P = 0.0001). MUR increased villus heigh (VH) when compared to the control or the other supplemented groups (P = 0.0001), and led to the highest concentration of most SCFA, total BCFA, and total SCFA (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the supplementation of MUR and phytogenics to the diets of broiler chickens improved the growth performance, but MUR, only, was capable of effectively degrading peptidoglycans (PGNs) in both intestinal segments, as well as to increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria and SCFA production.

Introduction: Workplace health management (WHM) is a worthwhile investment for companies. Nevertheless, the implementation of health-promoting interventions remains limited, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises. Interorganisational networks could be a promising way to raise awareness of the advantages of implementing WHM. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyse the perceived functionality and benefits of a regional WHM network from companies' perspective and to present initial results on this specific topic. Methods: An explorative qualitative case study was conducted analysing ERZgesund, a WHM network in a rural region in Germany. Twenty-two companies that participated in the network were interviewed about their experiences and perceived advantages and disadvantages participating in the WHM network ERZgesund. Results: The findings show that the network has raised awareness about WHM among the companies, provides opportunities for exchange of knowledge and experiences, and generates or strengthens collaboration. The positive effects were enhanced by the network's structure, such as regionality and a direct contact person. Nevertheless, some companies stated that they would welcome a higher level of participation and transparency. Conclusion: Overall, it becomes clear that a WHM network can be a valuable tool to emphasize the relevance of WHM to companies. Therefore, further studies should validate and intensify the research on WHM networks to ensure a long-term benefit from the network.

Community recovery from a disaster is a complex process, in which the importance of different types of infrastructure functionality can change over time. Most of the myriad of metrics available for measuring disaster resilience do not capture the dynamic importance of functionality explicitly, however. This means that very different recovery trajectories of a given infrastructure can correspond to the same resilience value, regardless of variations in its utility over time. While some efforts have been made to integrate features of time dependency into individual facility resilience quantification, the resulting metrics either capture only a limited set of temporal instances throughout the post-disaster phase or do not offer a way to prioritize time steps in line with variations in the importance of facility functionality. This study proposes a novel, straightforward metric for component-level post-disaster resilience quantification that overcomes the aforementioned limitations. The metric involves a dynamic weighting component that enables stakeholders to place varying emphasis on different temporal points throughout the recovery process. The end-user-centered approach to resilience quantification facilitated by the metric allows for flexible, context-specific interpretations of infrastructure functionality importance that may vary across different communities. The metric is demonstrated through a hypothetical case study of infrastructure facilities with varying degrees of importance across the post-disaster recovery period, which showcases its versatility relative to a previously well-established measurement of component-level resilience. The proposed metric has significant potential for use in stakeholder-driven approaches to decision making on critical infrastructure (as well as other types of built environment) recovery and resilience.

Protein hydrolysates have attracted much attention for their high biological activity and are a crucial product form for the utilization of foxtail millet bran by-products. In this study, changes in the structure, functionality, activity and peptide profile of foxtail millet bran protein hydrolysates (FMBPHs) at different ultrasound powers (0 - 600 W) were investigated. The results showed that ultrasound promoted the transformation of α-helix and ß-sheet to random coils and ß-turn, and the exposure of hydrophobic groups and sulfhydryl groups in FMBPHs. The average particle size of the samples decreased, and the absolute value of the ζ-potential increased significantly. Simultaneously, smaller porous particles and loose fragments appeared on the surface of FMBPHs when the ultrasonic power was increased to 450 W. Additionally, 450 W ultrasound treatment improved solubility, foaming properties, emulsifying properties, thermal stability of FMBPHs. The DPPH, ABTS and hydroxyl radical scavenging ability (IC50, 2.65, 1.06 and 3.02 mg/mL), Fe2+ chelating activity (IC50, 2.62 mg/mL), and reducing power of the samples were also enhanced. The peptidomics results demonstrated that ultrasonication increased the number of active peptides in the hydrolysate, and the relative abundance of 17 active peptides was obviously elevated at 450 W. Peptide map analysis showed that ultrasound-induced structural modifications affected the peptide profiles of Ubiquitin-like domain-containing protein, Cupin type-1 domain-containing protein, 40S ribosomal protein S19, and Oleosin 1, showing changes in the abundance of certain peptides, which may be related to changes in the characterization of FMBPHs.

BACKGROUND: Placement of peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVC) is a routine procedure in hospital settings. The primary objective is to explore the relationship between healthcare inequities and PIVC outcomes. METHODS: This study was a multicenter, observational analysis of adults with PIVC access established in the emergency department requiring inpatient admission between January 1st, 2021, and January 31st, 2023, in metro Detroit, Michigan, United States. Epidemiological, demographic, therapeutic, clinical, and outcomes data were collected. Health disparities were defined by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. The primary outcome was the proportion of PIVC dwell time to hospitalization length of stay, expressed as the proportion of dwell time (hours) to hospital stay (hours) x 100%. Multivariable linear regression and a machine learning model were used for variable selection. Subsequently, a multivariate linear regression analysis was utilized to adjust for confounders and best estimate the true effect of each variable. RESULTS: Between January 1st, 2021, and January 31st, 2023, our study analyzed 144,524 ED encounters, with an average patient age of 65.7 years and 53.4% female. Racial demographics showed 67.2% White, and 27.0% Black, with the remaining identifying as Asian, American Indian Alaska Native, or other races. The median proportion of PIVC dwell time to hospital length of stay was 0.88, with individuals identifying as Asian having the highest ratio (0.94) and Black individuals the lowest (0.82). Black females had a median dwell time to stay ratio of 0.76, significantly lower than White males at 0.93 (p < 0.001). After controlling for confounder variables, a multivariable linear regression demonstrated that Black males and White males had a 10.0% and 19.6% greater proportion of dwell to stay, respectively, compared to Black females (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Black females face the highest risk of compromised PIVC functionality, resulting in approximately one full day of less reliable PIVC access than White males. To comprehensively address and rectify these disparities, further research is imperative to improve understanding of the clinical impact of healthcare inequities on PIVC access. Moreover, it is essential to formulate effective strategies to mitigate these disparities and ensure equitable healthcare outcomes for all individuals.

INTRODUCTION: The prone foot posture has a negative effect on postural stability, function, and knee valgus, but to our knowledge, the contribution of the degree of pronation has not been examined. METHODS: 39 participants aged 18-40, with Foot Posture Index (FPI) scores between 6-12 and without any pain complaints were included. Participants with 6-9 points were included in the pronation group (PG) (n = 19), and participants with 10-12 points were included in the hyperpronation group (HPG) (n = 20). Static and dynamic postural stability, Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM), and frontal plane projection angles (FPPA) were measured for all participants. RESULTS: The initial data of the participants are distributed homogeneously. In the intergroup evaluation only FPI-1 (p = 0.001; p < 0.05), FPI-4 (p = 0.00; p < 0.05), FPI-5 (p = 0.00; p < 0.05) and FPI-T (p = 0.000; p < 0.05) scores were found significantly different. CONCLUSION: Pronation and hyperpronation of the subtalar joint did not lead to a difference in postural stability, function, and knee valgus in healthy individuals. It may be more beneficial to focus on the prone posture rather than the degree of pronation.

OBJECTIVES: The aim is to assess performance characteristics in jumps and functionality in participants with patellar tendinopathy and compare changes with various tendinopathy treatments in the short and medium term. As a secondary objective, the study aims to verify the relationship between changes in knee functionality assessed by the VISA-P and jump capacity in the different treatment groups. DESIGN: A double-blinded randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Recruitment was conducted at sport clubs, with 48 participants with patellar tendinopathy included in the study. Participants were randomized into groups: dry needling (DN), percutaneous electrolysis (PNE), and sham needling as the control group (CG), all combined with eccentric exercise (EE). Functionality and performance during jumps, including squat jump (SJ) and counter movement jump (CMJ), were assessed. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in functionality between the pre-test and post-test evaluations, as well as between the pre-test and follow-up evaluations, in all three groups (p < 0.001). The DN group experienced an improvement in eccentric power (p = 0.021). A moderate correlation was found between the pre-test and post-test changes in functionality and SJ maximum concentric force (r = 0.63, p < 0.01, CI: 0.1; 0.8), CMJ maximum concentric force (r = 0.52, p = 0.05, CI: -0.01; 0.8), and CMJ eccentric power in the DN group (r = 0.63, p = 0.01, CI: 0.1; 0.8). CONCLUSIONS: Eccentric exercise could be effective in improving functionality in patellar tendinopathy and DN could improve eccentric power in jumps performance. Moreover, the DN group experienced an increase in functionality that correlated with the improvements found in jump performance in eccentric power and concentric strength.

The sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) seriously restricts the overall efficiency of water splitting. Here, we present an environmentally friendly and efficient aniline oxidation (BOR) to replace the sluggish OER, accomplishing the co-production of H2 and high value-added benzonitrile (BN) at low voltages. Cobalt oxalates grown on cobalt foam (CoC2O4·2H2O/CF) are adopted as the pre-catalysts, which further evolve into working electrocatalysts active for BOR and HER after appropriate electrochemical activation. Thereinto, cyclic voltammetry activation at positive potentials is performed to reconstruct cobalt oxalate via extensive oxidation, resulting in enriched Co(III) species and nanoporous structures beneficial for BOR, while chronoamperometry at negative potentials is introduced for the cathodic activation toward efficient HER with obvious improvement. The two activated electrodes can be combined into a two-electrode system, which achieves a high current density of 75 mA cm-2 at the voltage of 1.95 V, with the high Faraday efficiencies of both BOR (90.0%) and HER (90.0%) and the satisfactory yield of BN (76.8%).

In order to determine suitable end use applications for different starches, this review characterizes and differentiates the physical components, solid state, crystalline structures, and their effects on gelatinization, retrogradation, texture and functionality. There exist four crystalline packings of starch. A-, B- and C-type packings are attributed to amylopectin, and V-type which is attributed to amylose. B- and C- type crystallinity rely on water to help coordinate their crystal structures due to the congregation of water in the large intrahelical cavity of the B-type packings. The ratio of amylose to amylopectin content largely affects the textural and functional properties of starch. Amylose largely influences retrogradation, and thus can largely impact the crystallinity, strength, cohesion and brittleness of starch gel systems. Amylose has been found to crystallize prior to amylopectin, suggesting that amylose acts as a nucleation site for further radial crystallization of amylopectin. Processing treatments such as size reduction and drying, which are typically applied to all commercial starches, also impact the physiochemical and functional characteristics of the starch. These processes can cause damage to the starch granule while reducing crystallinity in the native starch, but also increasing retrogradation in gelatinized systems.

Rice grain is widely consumed as a staple food, providing essential nutrition for households, particularly marginalized families. It plays a crucial role in ensuring food security, promoting human nutrition, supporting good health, and contributing to global food and nutritional security. Addressing the diverse quality demands of emerging diverse and climate-risked population dietary needs requires the development of a single variety of rice grain that can meet the various dietary and nutritional requirements. However, there is a lack of concrete definition for rice grain quality, making it challenging to cater to the different demands. The lack of sufficient genetic study and development in improving rice grain quality has resulted in widespread malnutrition, hidden hunger, and micronutrient deficiencies affecting a significant portion of the global population. Therefore, it is crucial to identify genetically evolved varieties with marked qualities that can help address these issues. Various factors account for the declining quality of rice grain and requires further study to improve their quality for healthier diets. We characterized rice grain quality using Lancastrians descriptor and a multitude of intrinsic and extrinsic quality traits. Next, we examined various components of rice grain quality favored in the Asia-Pacific region. This includes preferences by different communities, rice industry stakeholders, and value chain actors. We also explored the biological aspects of rice grain quality in the region, as well as specific genetic improvements that have been made in these traits. Additionally, we evaluated the factors that can influence rice grain quality and discussed the future directions for ensuring food and nutritional security and meeting consumer demands for grain quality. We explored the diverse consumer bases and their varied preferences in Asian-Pacific countries including India, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Korea, Myanmar and Japan. The quality preferences encompassed a range of factors, including rice head recovery, grain shape, uniform size before cooking, gelatinization, chalkiness, texture, amylose content, aroma, red-coloration of grain, soft and shine when cooked, unbroken when cooked, gelatinization, less water required for cooking, gelatinization temperature (less cooking time), aged rice, firm and dry when cooked (gel consistency), extreme white, soft when chewed, easy-to-cook rice (parboiled rice), vitamins, and minerals. These preferences were evaluated across high, low, and medium categories. A comprehensive analysis is provided on the enhancement of grain quality traits, including brown rice recovery, recovery rate of milled rice, head rice recovery, as well as morphological traits such as grain length, grain width, grain length-width ratio, and grain chalkiness. We also explored the characteristics of amylose, gel consistency, gelatinization temperature, viscosity, as well as the nutritional qualities of rice grains such as starch, protein, lipids, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and bio-fortification potential. The various factors that impact the quality of rice grains, including pre-harvest, post-harvest, and genotype considerations were explored. Additionally, we discussed the future direction and genetic strategies to effectively tackle these challenges. These qualitative characteristics represent the fundamental focus of regional and national breeding strategies employed by different countries to meet consumer preference. Given the significance of rice as a staple food in Asia-Pacific countries, it is primarily consumed domestically, with only a small portion being exported internationally. All the important attributes must be clearly defined within specific parameters. It is crucial for geneticists and breeders to develop a rice variety that can meet the diverse demands of consumers worldwide by incorporating multiple desirable traits. Thus, the goal of addressing global food and nutritional security, and human healthy can be achieved.

This study examined health information technology-related incidents to characterise system issues as a basis for improvement in Swedish clinical practice. Incident reports were collected through interviews together with retrospectively collected incidents from voluntary incident databases, which were analysed using deductive and inductive approaches. Most themes pertained to system issues, such as functionality, design, and integration. Identified system issues were dominated by technical factors (74%), while human factors accounted for 26%. Over half of the incidents (55%) impacted on staff or the organisation, and the rest on patients - patient inconvenience (25%) and patient harm (20%). The findings indicate that it is vital to choose and commission suitable systems, design out "error-prone" features, ensure contingency plans are in place, implement clinical decision-support systems, and respond to incidents on time. Such strategies would improve the health information technology systems and Swedish clinical practice.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigation of the effects of the Cognitive Exercise Therapy Approach (Bilissel Egzersiz Terapi Yaklasimi-BETY), a supervised biopsychosocial model-based exercise intervention, on functionality, muscle strength, vascularization, anti-inflammatory and biopsychosocial status in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) patients. METHODS: Thirty-seven SSc patients were included. Twenty of them were recruited into the study group (SG) undergoing BETY group exercise sessions three times a week for three months and 17 were in the control group (CG) following a home exercise program. Assessments tools were the Modified Rodnan Skin Score (mRSS), Scleroderma Health Assessment Questionnaire (SHAQ), Modified Hand Mobility in Scleroderma (mHAMIS), Duruoz Hand Index (DHI), Six Minute Walk Test (6MWT), skeletal muscle strength measurements using an isokinetic dynamometer (Biodex System 3 Pro), Shear Wave Elastography (SWE), ELISA kits (for tumor necrosis factor-alpha, Interleukin-6, IL-10, serum irisin level), BETY-Biopsychosocial Questionnaire (BETY-BQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Short Form-36 (SF-36). RESULTS: The SG demonstrated improvements in SHAQ, mHAMIS, 6MWT, BETY-BQ, HADS, and SF-36 values, excluding the DHI scores (p < 0.05). In contrast, CG showed worsening in SHAQ-general scleroderma symptoms and HADS scores compared to SG (p < 0.05). IL-10 and TNF-alpha increased in both groups, also various vascular parameters were significantly different changed in SG than CG (p < 0.05). Muscle strength values improved in the SG but decreased in the CG however this was statistically not significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: BETY can be recommended as a nonpharmacologic approach to the disease management of SSc patients.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of horse riding simulator on upper extremity skills, trunk control and functionality in cerebral palsy (CP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized controlled trial included total 32 CP, 16 in horse riding simulator group (HRSG) and 16 in control group (CG). ABILHAND-Kids, Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT), Gross Motor Function Measurement-sitting dimension (GMFM-B), Trunk Control Measurement Scale (TCMS), Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) were evaluated before and after procedure. RESULTS: It was observed that there were improvements in both groups for ABILHAND-Kids scores after intervention, but the change in HRSG was significantly higher (p < 0.001). For all parameters of JTHFT (except writing dominant, non-dominant, turning cards-dominant), there was a significant difference between groups in favor of HRSG (p < 0.001-0.002). There was no change in GMFM-B values with intervention for both groups (p > 0.05). There were significant changes in favor of HRSG group in terms TCMS-Total (p = 0.003). There were significant changes in HRSG compared to CG for PEDI (pPEDI-Self-care<0.001, pPEDI-Mobility<0.001, pPEDI-Social function=0.016, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: It has been found that HRS in addition to conventional physiotherapy have positive effects on upper extremity skills, trunk control and functional abilities in daily life in the rehabilitation process of CP.The study protocol is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (Identifier: NCT05518370).


Horse riding simulator (HRS) in addition to the routine physiotherapy is an effective method to improve upper extremity skills in children with CP.HRS may be an effective method to improve functional abilities of the children with Cerebral Palsy (CP).HRS is suitable for indoor use and has positive therapeutic effects on children with CP.The type and difficulty of the movements can be programmed gradually with HRS.
