RESUMEN

The paper investigates how tropospheric ozone affects the financial performance of French wine companies by influencing their operating income, using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) methodology. The study encompasses 487 active French wine industry companies from 2010 to 2022, considering various market, climate, and financial factors. The main findings show that high concentrations of tropospheric ozone negatively affect both the quality and quantity of grapes, thereby reducing the operating income of French wine companies and, consequently, their financial performance. More precisely, within the current market conditions and climate context, a 1% rise in tropospheric ozone levels leads to a 10.4% decrease in the operating income of French wine companies, which translates to a 0.7-0.8% decline in their financial performance. A strong market position enables French wine companies to achieve higher revenues, increased profit margins, and sustainable growth. Additionally, lower soil wetness, humidity, and temperature under higher atmospheric pressure improve grapevine growth and grape quality, further boosting revenue. Policy implications for wine producers include adopting site selection, irrigation, and canopy management strategies to enhance grape quality and financial health. Public authorities can address tropospheric ozone pollution through air quality standards, monitoring systems, financial incentives, and educational programs to mitigate its adverse effects.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Hypertension significantly impacts the global cardiovascular disease burden, presenting a pronounced challenge within Latin America and the Caribbean. The Pan American Health Organization's (PAHO) HEARTS initiative endeavours to meet this challenge by enhancing comprehensive cardiovascular risk management, inclusive of improved access to antihypertensive medications. This study scrutinises the challenges and barriers in accessing these medications, which are crucial for effective hypertension management in these regions. Methods: The research employed a two-phase approach: an initial analysis of National Essential Medicines Lists (NEMLs) from 22 countries involved in the HEARTS initiative for the presence of antihypertensive medications, followed by an in-depth pharmaceutical market analysis in six selected countries to evaluate the availability, pricing, and procurement practices of these medications. Results: The study revealed notable inconsistencies in the inclusion of recommended antihypertensive medications across NEMLs, particularly the lack of fixed-dose combinations (FDCs). The market analysis brought to light significant limitations in medicine registration and substantial variations in pricing, which adversely impact the accessibility and affordability of essential antihypertensive treatments. Furthermore, an examination of procurement practices identified considerable diversity across countries, highlighting potential areas for optimisation, including the use of the PAHO Strategic Fund. Conclusions: The barriers to accessing essential antihypertensive medications in Latin America and the Caribbean are multifaceted, stemming from outmoded NEMLs, limited market availability of advised medications, and disparate procurement processes. Leveraging pooled procurement mechanisms such as the PAHO Strategic Fund, coupled with vital updates to NEMLs, stands to markedly improve both the accessibility and affordability of these treatments.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Specialised mental healthcare delivery is highly labour intensive, and the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated workforce shortfalls. We explore the information on the mental healthcare labour supply in Australia from a health policy viewpoint. Our purpose is to stimulate discussion, further research and development of interventions. CONCLUSIONS: The mental healthcare labour market has a number of features that make it prone to shortages and other distortions. These include: the labour-intensive nature of healthcare work;, long-training periods; that traditional policy levers like pay are only partially effective; as well as other challenges in retaining and recruiting mental health nurses and psychiatrists, especially in public mental health services. Further research is needed to develop and evaluate effective interventions.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Both vestibular neuronitis (VN) and Meniere's disease (MD) have great impact on quality of life and are associated with a significant number of sick leave days absent from work. The aim was to assess labor market participation rate one year after hospital diagnosis of VN and MD and the use of rehabilitation measures. STUDY DESIGN: Nationwide register-based cohort study including patients with VN (n = 1,341) and MD (n = 843) and control persons matched in 1:5 with a VN cohort control (n = 6,683) and MD cohort control (n = 4,209). RESULTS: Compared to control persons, VN patients were more likely to be single, have higher income, and a higher Charlson comorbidity index score. MD patients had a higher level of education and a higher Charlson index compared to control persons. One year after patients were diagnosed with VN, no significant difference in labor market participation was observed (p = 0.88). However, MD patients had a 10.4% reduced probability of possessing a full-time job one year after diagnosis compared to matched control persons (58.1 ± 0.5% vs. 68.5 ± 0.5%, p < 0.001). Both VN and MD patients consulted otorhinolaryngologists, general practitioners, and physiotherapists more than control persons both before and after the initial diagnosis (p < 0.01). In addition, MD patients also consulted psychologists more frequently before and after diagnosis of the disease (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Intrahospital diagnosed MD increases the risk of leaving the labor market in opposition to VN. Both MD and VN are associated with significant expenses to the Danish health care system from the use of public rehabilitation measures and medical consultations.

RESUMEN

The verdict in the case of Skatteverket v. David Hedqvist (Kokott, Advocate General (2015) Opinion delivered on 16 July 2015, Case C-264/14. ECLI:EU:C:2015:498. Available via TandF Online. 10.1080/20488432.2015.1096631.) is crucial for understanding how the EU treats virtual currencies, such as Bitcoin, in terms of Value-added Tax (VAT). This case involved the Swedish citizen David Hedqist who was seeking clarity from the Swedish Tax Authority Skatteverket on exchanging money for Bitcoins. The case set a precedent exempting such services from VAT under the EU's VAT Directive (Council Directive 2006/112/EC (2006) On the common system of value added tax. OJ L347. Available via EUR-Lex. https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/ALL/?uri=CELEX:32006L0112. Accessed 3 January 2024.). Specifically, Article 135(1)(e) of the EU's VAT Directive excludes those transactions from VAT that include money-related transactions, that include deals or negotiations about different kinds of money, including cash and coins that are officially legal tender, i.e., used for buying things, except for collectable items like special coins or notes that people collect but do not use as a means of payment. Skatteverket (Kokott, Advocate General (2015) Opinion delivered on 16 July 2015, Case C-264/14. ECLI:EU:C:2015:498. Available via TandF Online. 10.1080/20488432.2015.1096631.) clarified that cash transactions are not subject to VAT, even though they are considered services for VAT purposes. Despite this clarity, the evolving landscape of digital assets' uniqueness, including Non-Fungible Tokens (Alawadhi KM, Alshamali N (2022) NFTs Emergence in Financial Markets and their Correlation with DeFis and Cryptocurrencies. Applied Economics and Finance 9:108. 10.11114/aef.v9i1.5444. Available at CORE. https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/524752899.pdf. Accessed 3 January 2024.), continues to challenge VAT frameworks across member states. Using insights from the European Commission's Working Paper 1060, this article advocates for a unified approach tailored to digital and crypto services, addressing complexities in NFT taxation to reduce uncertainty and foster market cohesion. The findings highlight the importance of legislative changes and increased cross-border collaboration, as well as provide recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders in the digital finance and platform sector (European Commission (2024) Working Paper 1060. Available at: https://ec.europa.eu/info/publications/working-paper-1060_en. Accessed 3 March 2024.). By proposing strategic harmonisation of VAT enforcement, the research helps to improve tax compliance and support long-term growth in the EU's digital market (Cappai M (2023) The role of private and public regulation in the case study of crypto-assets: The Italian move towards participatory regulation. RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To compare relative risk (RR) of central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) between hospitals using Clave needleless connector technologies (NCT) and comparator hospitals using non-Clave NCT. And, to estimate avoided CLABSIs, mortality, and cost savings. BACKGROUND: Needleless connectors, while protective against needlestick injury, have long been implicated as a potential risk for CLABSI. Significant RR reduction of CLABSI among the many NCT has not been clinically demonstrated. METHODS: The U.S. Healthcare-Associated Infections database was accessed for CLABSI data for calendar year 2019 via the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services website. This dataset was merged with the Clave NCT manufacturer's 2019 database to identify hospitals purchasing Clave NCT (MicroClave™, NanoClave™, Clave Neutron™, Clave™, Microclave™ Clear) and non-Clave NCT comparator hospitals. Sub-analysis of Clave NCT hospitals included: (1) Clave NCT mixed-use and (2) Clave high-volume use hospitals. The standardized infection ratio (SIR) was generated to estimate CLABSI RR after adjusting for intern/resident-to-bed-ratio (IRB), care location, and hospital demographics. Using the RR, avoided CLABSIs, mortality, and cost savings were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 2987 eligible hospitals (1288 Clave NCT, 1699 non-Clave NCT) with 17,452,575 central line-days were evaluated. All three Clave NCT hospital groups showed a statistically significant reduction in RR compared to the non-Clave NCT hospitals. The RR in Clave NCT hospitals was 0.93, a 7% decrease in CLABSI risk (p = 0.02). In the Clave NCT subgroups, mixed-use hospitals RR was 0.93, a 7% reduction (p = 0.04), while the Clave NCT high-volume hospitals experienced a 19% reduction, RR 0.81 (p = 0.04). An estimated 563 CLABSIs and 84 related deaths were avoided with use of Clave NCT and $27,095,231 in cost savings. CONCLUSION: The use of the Clave NCT, in and of itself, is an effective risk reduction strategy for CLABSI prevention, reduced mortality, and substantial cost savings.

RESUMEN

The emergence of innovative plant-based meat analogs, replicating the flavor, texture, and appearance of animal meat cuts, is deemed crucial for sustainably feeding a growing population while mitigating the environmental impact associated with livestock farming. Multi-material 3D food printing (MM3DFP) has been proposed as a potentially disruptive technology for manufacturing the next generation of plant-based meat analogs. This article provides a comprehensive review of the state of the art, addressing various aspects of 3D printing in the realm of plant-based meat. The disruptive potential of printed meat analogs is discussed with particular emphasis on protein-rich, lipid-rich, and blood-mimicking food inks. The printing parameters, printing requirements, and rheological properties at the different printing stages are addressed in detail. As food rheology plays a key role in the printing process, an appraisal of this subject is performed. Post-printing treatments are assessed based on the extent of improvement in the quality of 3D-printed plant-based meat analogs. The meat-mimicking potential is revealed through sensory attributes, such as texture and flavor. Furthermore, there has been limited research into food safety and nutrition. Economically, the 3D printing of plant-based meat analogs demonstrates significant market potential, contingent upon innovative decision-making strategies and supportive policies to enhance consumer acceptance. This review examines the current limitations of this technology and highlights opportunities for future developments.

RESUMEN

A major challenge facing the biomedical community is creating and sustaining high-quality research environments. A literature search identified five common themes underlying biomedical research environments comprising collaboration, data access, user-led innovation, data provenance and a deep commitment to public and scientific benefit. Club theory is used to develop a model describing social structures that underpin these themes. It is argued that collaboration underlies impactful science and that collaboration is hindered by high transaction costs. This, combined with poorly defined property rights surrounding publicly funded data, limits the ability of data markets to operate efficiently. Although the science community is best placed to provide solutions for these issues, incentivization by funding agencies to increase the benefits of collaboration and reduce uncoordinated activity will be an accelerator. Given the complexity of emerging datasets and the collaborations needed to exploit them, trust-by-design solutions are suggested. The underlying motivational 'glue' that holds this activity together is the aesthetic and ethical value base underlying good science. The model has implications for data-driven science more generally. As biomedical science in the Global South develops, there is an opportunity to address foundational structural issues prospectively rather than inherit unwanted constraints of current practice.

RESUMEN

This study uses China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) data from 2010 to 2018 to empirically investigate the interplay between digital technology access, labor market behavior, and income inequality in rural China. The following salient conclusions are derived. Digital technology access has a substantial negative influence on individual income inequality in rural China, with a more pronounced inhibitory effect on inequality among low-income groups, males, middle and higher professional classes, and younger cohorts. Mechanism analysis suggests that digital technology access significantly impacts a range of rural labor practices, including increasing the frequency of digital technology use among rural inhabitants, decreasing credit costs, enhancing entrepreneurial activities, and boosting rural labor mobility. Based on these findings, this study proposes accelerating digital infrastructure development in rural regions, improving digital and financial literacy among rural residents, and refining inclusive digital financial services to facilitate more stable and sustainable progress to promote common prosperity.

RESUMEN

This research addresses the impact of illicit drug use on labour market outcomes of men in Mexico. We leverage statistical information from three waves of a comparable national survey and make use of the Lewbel's heteroskedasticity-based instrumental variable strategy to deal with the endogeneity of the drug consumption. Our results suggests that drug consumption has fairly negative effects in the Mexican context: it reduces employment, occupational attainment and formality and raises unemployment of local males. These effects seem larger than those estimated for high-income economies.

RESUMEN

The global water cycle has experienced significant changes due to the interplay of climate shifts and human activities, resulting in more frequent and severe droughts and floods. These shifts have started to impact the operational efficiency of water treatment and delivery systems. This, in turn, has implications for the economic performance of these assets and the climate-impacted cost of their financing through the issuing of municipal bonds. Analyzing a decade of water bond data (2009-2019), this study offers empirical evidence for the impact of flood and drought risks on bond investor demand to offset water risks. The results reveal that bond markets factored in coastal flood risks between 2013 and 2019, adjusting by 3-6 basis points (bps) per risk score unit, and riverine flood risks from 2009 to 2013, with a 5-11 basis points increase per risk score unit. These effects were primarily driven by bonds issued in the Pacific Coast and Great Plains regions, respectively. In contrast, the pricing of drought risks in the bond market followed a more nuanced pattern. Additionally, we show the channeling effects of water consumption and investor perceptions of climate change on water risk pricing in the bond market. These findings have significant implications for water risk management in the public sector as regions with heightened water risk exposure are perceived as riskier by market participants, leading to a higher cost of capital for municipalities and water agencies.

RESUMEN

Technological change and globalization have caused unprecedented transformations of labour markets, resulting in a growing division between workers who perform cognitive vs non-cognitive tasks. To date, only few studies have addressed the fertility effects of these long-term structural changes. This study fills that gap. We measure the cognitive task content of occupations using data from the Employment Survey of the German Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, which we link to individual histories from the German Socio-Economic Panel 1984-2018. We find that women and men with non-cognitive jobs are increasingly less likely to enter parenthood; this is reflected in lower first-birth intensities but also in higher probabilities of childlessness compared with workers in highly cognitive jobs. These findings imply that structural shifts in the labour market are exacerbating disparities between low-skilled and highly skilled individuals, not only within the labour market but also in the realm of family formation.

RESUMEN

In 2022, the Drug User Liberation Front's Compassion Club and Fulfillment Centre emerged as a groundbreaking initiative and research endeavor aimed at addressing the alarming rise in overdose deaths within Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. As the first of its kind, this pioneering model operated as a non-profit, low-barrier, and non-medicalized approach to regulating the volatility of the content of the illicit drug market in order to prevent overdose deaths. Going beyond traditional overdose prevention methods, the Drug User Liberation Front's Compassion Club and Fulfillment Centre not only provided supervised consumption services, but also supplied rigorously tested cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine at cost to club members. This intrinsic case study offers a unique perspective on the operation of Drug User Liberation Front's Compassion Club and Fulfillment Centre, delving into its inception, development, implementation, and the challenges it faced in its operation. Ultimately, the insights garnered from the Drug User Liberation Front's Compassion Club and Fulfillment Centre hold significant value for others interested in establishing similar programs or exploring de-medicalized approaches regulating substances in order to prevent overdose deaths.

RESUMEN

The prevalence of avian influenza viruses is commonly found to increase dramatically as birds are transported from farms to live bird markets. Viral transmission dynamics along marketing chains are, however, poorly understood. To address this gap, we implemented a controlled field experiment altering chicken supply to a live bird market in Chattogram, Bangladesh. Broilers and backyard chickens traded along altered (intervention) and conventional (control) marketing chains were tested for avian influenza viruses at different time points. Upon arrival at the live bird market, the odds of detecting avian influenza viruses did not differ between control and intervention groups. However, 12 h later, intervention group odds were lower, particularly for broilers, indicating that viral shedding in live bird markets resulted partly from infections occurring during transport and trade. Curtailing avian influenza virus prevalence in live bird markets requires mitigating risk in marketing chain nodes preceding chickens' delivery at live bird markets.

RESUMEN

The article examines the service sector for the elderly as a segment of the silver economy market. The author's classification of services provided to the elderly is given according to an expanded set of criteria. During the expert survey, medical and social services that are of primary demand among the elderly were identified. Legal services and transportation services came in second place. The underestimation of the factor of psychological support for both the aging process itself and possible concomitant processes was noted.

RESUMEN

This study analyzes the effect of avian influenza outbreaks on retail price premiums in the US poultry market. We estimate hedonic price models for eggs, chickens, and turkeys, controlling for quality characteristics, unobserved time, and regional factors. To measure the impact of avian influenza outbreaks we use 2 proxies. The first proxy is a measure of the number of new bird infections at the production level. The second proxy measures online search queries related to the outbreak. The results show that, on average, prices increase across product categories, that is, egg, broiler, and turkey markets, during avian influenza outbreaks. Furthermore, we observe price convergence and reduced dispersion within product categories, which is consistent with the economic theory of asymmetric substitutability between conventional and premium products. Our analysis finds that the HPAI outbreak caused a reduction of the price gap between conventional and premium products.

RESUMEN

In China, acquiring firms are increasingly focused on the immediate financial returns that digital mergers and acquisitions (DM&A) can help them achieve in the stock market, but there is little literature that examines which acquiring firms achieve greater returns. Based on signaling theory, this study conceptualizes DM&A announcements as signals released by the acquiring firms to the stock market and explores the factors influencing the Chinese stock market's reaction to such signals. This research empirically investigates potential influencing factors using a short-term event methodology together with regression analysis based on the data collected in China's Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets during 2012-2021. The research finds that the Chinese stock market reacts more positively to DM&A announcements for acquiring firms with high executive shareholdings, high executive openness, strong digital innovation capabilities, and in regions with higher levels of investor protection. This study is the first attempt to explore the factors influencing the stock market's response to DM&A in the Chinese context.

RESUMEN

This data article provides a description of the labor market concentration dataset. Using the job vacancy data from Lightcast from 2007Q1 to 2021Q2 (2008 and 2009 data are not available), we measure labor market concentration by using Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) in labor markets defined at the occupation (six-digit SOC), commuting zone, and quarterly level. The HHI is calculated based on the share of vacancies among all the firms that post vacancies in that market. Data includes information on year-quarter, six-digit SOC, commuting zone, lower bound HHI, and higher bound HHI. Given the growing literature on labor monopsony power, this labor market concentration data can be used by researchers in various contexts, aiming to investigate the impact of employer market power on different labor market and social outcomes.

RESUMEN

The growth of physician vertical integration raises concerns about distorted referral patterns, higher spending, and market foreclosure. Using 100% Medicare data, we combine reduced-form analysis with a discrete choice model to estimate the effects of physician vertical integration on patients' provider choices and welfare for two common "downstream" surgical procedures. Physician-hospital integration results in an approximately 10% increase in referrals to higher-priced facilities instead of lower-priced providers. Our counterfactual analysis implies that if all primary care physicians become integrated, total Medicare spending will increase by $315 million.
