RESUMEN

Introduction: Among clinical healthcare personnel, nurses face the highest proportion of workplace violence, which has a significant impact on their physical and mental well-being as well as their personal and professional lives. However, little is known about the effects of workplace violence on inexperienced breastfeeding nurses and their experiences during and after breastfeeding when they return to work. This study aimed to explore the experiences of inexperienced breastfeeding nurses who encountered workplace violence and its resulting impacts. Methods: This study employed a descriptive qualitative design. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 nurses working in various positions and departments at three tertiary hospitals. Purposive and maximum variation sampling techniques were employed. The interview data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method, and the research findings were reported according to Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Studies (COREQ)standards. Results: Inferences regarding workplace violence and risks for inexperienced breastfeeding nurses included physical labor (such as lifting heavy objects and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation), conflicts, inadequate job skills, role confusion, occupational exposure risks, patient violence, and pressure from older adults. An inductive thematic investigation revealed the "Challenges faced during breastfeeding," "Conflicting professional and family roles," "Out of balance," and "Coping strategies." Conclusion: Inexperienced breastfeeding nurses experience several negative consequences due to workplace violence. Therefore, it is essential to plan and implement preventive strategies and management programs that specifically target workplace violence among inexperienced breastfeeding nurses.

This article reports on a small mixed-methods research project undertaken with trainee nursing associates (TNAs) in the south of England. AIM: The aim was to gain insight into the motivation behind undertaking the nursing associate (NA) programme, how the NA role is perceived by service users and the wider healthcare team, and the future career pathways of NAs. METHODS: Online questionnaires (n=14) and online focus groups (n=6). FINDINGS: The results suggested undertaking the NA programme increased the TNAs' confidence and ability to use evidence to support their practice; that the role of the NA is not well understood. Some TNAs perceived the NA role as a distinct professional role, whereas others saw it as a way into registered nurse training. CONCLUSION: Role confusion still exists. Research is needed to capture how professional identities in new health and social care professional groups become established.

RESUMEN

Integrity is a foundational characteristic of the nursing profession. Ensuring academic integrity in nursing education is critical. The responsibility for academic integrity is shared among students, faculty, and administrators. Using a case scenario, the purpose of this manuscript is to identify and suggest administrative practices that create, maintain, and sustain a climate of academic integrity. This case scenario exposes some points of the inconsistencies in the policies and practices related to academic integrity while identifying best practices for administrators to employ and promote academic integrity at their respective institution. The authors address the inherent complexities of student due process, procedural fairness, faculty role confusion and confidentiality when working through academic integrity violations. As nurse leaders in an academic setting, the authors also share suggestions on how to improve the academic integrity process.

RESUMEN

The importance of a clinical placement in graduate nursing programs has been recognized in the academic literature and in the advanced nursing practice workforce environment as being beneficial. During a placement, post-graduate students have opportunities to familiarize themselves with the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) role and competencies, build networks, advance their personal and professional development, and validate their motivation and desire to pursue a particular professional area of advanced nursing practice. This paper describes reflections on a post-graduate clinical placement in palliative care, exercising the Canadian Nursing Association's (2019) APN competencies. Exposure to such a placement helps novice APNs develop a strategic and grounded advanced nursing practice foundation.

AIM: To describe the protocol for the pilot phase of a complex intervention, designed to address primary care nurses' role confusion in health promotion. DESIGN: A pilot clustered randomized controlled trial, with control and intervention groups. METHODS: The study will be conducted in a primary care setting. Participants will be nurses from the primary care health service working in a primary care team (PCT, 15 control group; 15 intervention group). Nurses in the experimental group will receive the ROLE-AP programme over a 3-week period. The control group will continue with the normal routine. The pilot will help determine the intervention's feasibility, acceptability, fidelity and quality of the programme components. Data collected preintervention, postintervention and 3 months after intervention will provide estimates of the intervention's preliminary effects on the main variable, nurses' degree of agreement concerning their expected role in health promotion. The study received funding from the local government in December 2019. DISCUSSION: Role confusion is promoting primary care nurses' omissions in their health-promoting practice, which is far from the ideal portrayed by the Ottawa Charter. Interventions are needed that reveal the most appropriate mechanisms for addressing role confusion, which requires reaching an intraprofessional agreement about the expectations for role activities. Healthcare organisations could benefit from the incorporation of a programme of these characteristics into standard practice. IMPACT: This study will produce a novel and comprehensive complex intervention that is expected to build nurses' capacity in primary healthcare organizations for health promotion, which is key to increasing the quality, efficiency and sustainability of the National Health System. The programme evaluation and feasibility study will reveal how to better use existing resources in a full-scale clinical trial. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT04726696).

Confusion and disagreement about the DNP degree and its implications continues despite the rapid and steady growth of DNP programs. There is a paucity of literature that examines nurses' perceptions of the role of the DNP-prepared nurse. The purpose of this study was to explore how nurses perceive the role of the DNP-prepared nurse and identify areas of ambiguity in understanding the roles that DNP-prepared nurses fulfill. A descriptive, cross-sectional design, using self-administered questionnaires, explored the perceptions of n = 340 nurses with various educational levels and backgrounds. Descriptives of the sample and instruments were conducted as well as chi-square analyses to detect differences in perceptions across levels of education. Results indicated that nurses clearly supported the DNP degree with a focus on the improvement of health care outcomes through the roles of leadership in health organizations, policy, interprofessionalism, and translation of evidence into practice. Multiple areas of confusion concerning the role of DNP-prepared nurse existed in academia, academia leadership, and scholarship. In order to reduce role ambiguity, the distinctive contributions of the DNP-prepared nurse must be embraced, valued, and operationalized. Otherwise, the role of the DNP-prepared nurse will continue to be discussed, debated, and challenged.
