RESUMEN

This study looked at how desalinated seawater, which has low minerals and high boron, could affect bone health. Prior research suggests that low mineral water may harm bone health and boron could be beneficial, but the overall impact on bone health is still unclear. Eighty-nine-week-old male Balb/C mice were allocated into eight groups and administered either tap water or purified water with varying boron concentrations (0, 5, 40, and 200 mg/L). They were kept in an environment mimicking tropical conditions (35-40 °C, 70-80% humidity) and underwent daily treadmill exercise for 13 weeks. At the 14th week, serum, femora, and lumbar vertebrae were collected for mineral metabolism, bone biomarker, microstructure, and biomechanics evaluation. Boron exposure improved bone formation, microstructure, and biomechanics initially but the benefits weakened with higher levels of exposure (p < 0.05). Co-exposure to purified water elevated serum boron but weakened the promotion of boron on bone minerals and the bone benefits of boron compared to tap water (p < 0.05). Thus, when studying the health effects of boron in desalinated seawater, it is crucial to look at various health effects beyond bone health. Furthermore, it is important to consider the mineral composition of drinking water when using boron for bone health benefits.

BACKGROUND: After suffering from COVID-19, a large number of patients need respiratory rehabilitation. One of the methods of rehabilitation is inhalation with salt aerosols. OBJECTIVE: Our work aimed to study the effectiveness of inhalations of a dry aerosol of salt precipitated from the mineral water of the "Teplitsa multidisciplinary sanatorium", Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 30 male patients were examined after suffering from COVID-19. We formed two groups of patients, control and main, 15 people each. Patients in the control group received inhalation with a dry aerosol of table salt of the "Aero-M-sol". In contrast, patients in the main group received a course of inhalations with a dry aerosol of salt precipitated from the mineral water. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Under the influence of the rehabilitation complex in both groups, there is a performance improvement but significant changes are observed only in patients of the main group. The indicator Forced Vital Сapacity1 increased to the greatest extent, which after rehabilitation is significantly higher than in the control group (p<0.05). As a result, the Tiffeneau index significantly increases in the main group compared to the control group, reaching normal values. The main effect is associated with a decrease in obstructive complications of the respiratory tract as a result of a decrease in inflammation. The use of iodine-bromine brines (as in our case) for inhalation in the treatment of respiratory diseases has been proven to be effective, with systemic effects in the form of decreased IgE and increased IgA in the blood serum having been noticed. CONCLUSIONS: The use of haloinhalations with MW salts in the rehabilitation of patients after suffering from COVID-19 disease significantly improves the clinical condition of convalescents.

This research article elucidates the pivotal role of radiopharmacy in the contemporary landscape, underscoring its potential therapeutic efficacy in addressing symptoms associated with aged-related neurocognitive processes. Clinical trials, characterized by the judicious application of modest radiation doses, exemplified by low-dose radon, have yielded affirmative outcomes in the amelioration of aged, related symptoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted on an animal model. The effect of low doses of radon on cognitive processes is being studied by inhalation of randomized mineral water. Changes in the clinical picture were studied using behavioral tests, namely the Barnes maze tests. At the cellular level, radon-contained water inhalation causes different changes: in the fraction of synaptic membranes (determined by Na, K-ATPase activity), aged, related changes by telomerase activity and oxidative stress level changes. RESULTS: Our studies show that age-related changes in brain tissue are less noticeable after radon inhalation, namely, the concentration of amyloid plaques decreases in a group of aged rats after radon therapy. A significant improvement in cognitive function was observed after radon inhalation in aged rats. CONCLUSION: The results show that exposure to radon-containing mineral water leads to improved spatial perception, potentially improving age-related cognitive functions not only at the level of neurocognitive tests, but also changes at the level of cellular functioning.

Acid-related diseases (ARD) are the most common among digestive diseases. The main goals of therapy of ARD are to reduce the influence of aggression factors (production of HCl, pepsin) and increase the protective properties of the mucous membrane of the upper digestive tract. Also currently in medicine, one of the therapeutic and preventive methods is the use of chloride-hydrocarbonate sodium boron mineral waters. In this study, we compared the efficacy of table mineral waters in the therapy of induced gastropathy in Wistar rats. The study of the effect of mineral waters on the gastric mucosa of Wistar rats has provided valuable information that can be applied in medical practice for the treatment and prevention of various diseases of the gastrointestinal tract in humans. Careful analysis of the data obtained has shown that certain types of mineral waters can significantly reduce inflammatory processes and promote regeneration of the gastric mucosa, which makes them a useful addition to traditional treatment methods such as pharmacotherapy.

Mineral water is a natural water that originated from an underground water table, a well, or a natural spring which is considered microbiologically intact. The revenue from the bottled mineral water industry will be USD 342.40 billion in 2023, and it is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.24 %. Consequently, the discrimination of original bottled mineral water from tap water is an important issue that requires designing sensors for simple and portable identification of these two types of water. In this work, we have developed a Dip-Type colorimetric paper-based sensor array with three organic dyes (Bromothymol Blue, Bromophenol Blue, and Methyl Red) followed by chemometrics' pattern recognition methods (PCA and LDA) for discrimination of original bottled mineral waters from tap waters based on differences in ion variety and ion quantity. Forty brands of mineral water and twenty-six Tap water samples from different regions of Shiraz and other Iranian cities were analyzed by this sensor array. Moreover, these experiments were performed in two consecutive years to check the versatility of the sensor with seasonal changes in waters. This sensor array was able to discriminate these two water types from each other with an accuracy of > 95 % based on the analysis of 85 water samples.

Turkey is abundant in natural mineral water sources, thanks to its location on the Alpine-Himalayan belt. Natural mineral water is drinking water characterized by its natural mineral, trace elements, and carbon dioxide content. Because of quite insufficient data, the boron content in bottled natural mineral waters in Turkey was analyzed by three different methods and compared: inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique, carminic acid, and azomethine-H methods, in this study. The boron levels in mineral waters ranged from a minimum of 0.05 mg/L to a maximum of 8.61 mg/L. It was also safe by the upper limit level estimated by the World Health Organisation. As boron plays a beneficial role in human physiology, consuming natural mineral water may offer a positive contribution to public health by supporting boron intake in our country. The other outcome of our research was that the spectrophotometric carminic acid method can yield results similar to those obtained using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique since the boron level of Turkish mineral water was within the limits level of the carminic acid method. However, the result of the azomethine-H method was found not to be suitable. Cross-sensitivity with other elements in mineral water might have caused this.

The mineral content of thermal spring water (TSW) applied to the skin surface can directly influence the skin barrier. Indeed, our previous study showed that Avène TSW (ATSW), a low mineral content thermal spring water, protects the stratum corneum from dehydration compared to a mineral-rich TSW (MR-TSW) and maintains skin surface ultrastructure. While many TSWs have been recognized to have beneficial effects on skin, little is known about their localized and specific effects on skin barrier biomechanics at the nanometric scale. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of ATSW with a reference, MR-TSW, on the biomechanical barrier properties of the skin under homeostasis conditions using atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM was used to obtain a precise nanomechanical mapping of the skin surface after three applications of both TSW. This provides specific information on the skin topographical profile and elasticity. The topographic profile of skin samples showed a specific compaction of the skin layers after application of MR-TSW, characterized by an increase of the total number of external skin layers, compared to non-treated samples. By contrast, ATSW did not modify the skin topographic profile. High-resolution force/volume acquisitions to capture the elastic modulus showed that it was directly correlated with skin rigidity. The elastic modulus strongly and significantly increased after MR-TSW application compared to non-treated skin. By contrast, applications of ATSW did not increase elastic modulus. These data demonstrate that applications of MR-TSW significantly modified skin barrier properties by increasing skin surface layer compaction and skin rigidity. By contrast, ATSW did not modify the topographical profile of skin explants nor induce mechanical stress at the level of the stratum corneum, indicating it does not disrupt the biophysical properties linked to skin surface integrity.

Here, we present a protocol for inoculating drinking water samples with a variety of pathogens or facultative pathogen bacteria. We describe steps for preparing bacterial solutions, inoculating mineral water bottles and other drinking water samples, filtration and incubation of the agar plates, and counting colony-forming unit per mL. We also detail procedures for determining selected chemical properties, such as anions and cations, which can also affect the bacterial growth. Drinking water is essential to human life. However, it can be polluted by various factors, including radioactive substances such as radon 222Rn and radium 226Ra. Therefore, the determination of their concentrations is important for public health. The aim of this work is to measure the concentration of 226Ra in samples of tap, natural spring and well water taken from different sources in the eastern region of Morocco, as well as in a few samples of bottled mineral water. We used an AlphaGUARD detector with an AlphaKit accessory and an RTM1688-2 to carry out measurements of radon in secular equilibrium with radium. The got results show that the 226Ra activity is less than 0.104 ± 0.023 Bq/L, the Annual Effective Dose (AED)) for adults and children is less than 29.1 ± 4.7 µSv.y-1and 123.8 ± 4.7 µSv.y-1 for infants. The chemical toxicity risk evaluated using the Lifetime Average Daily Dose (LADD) was found less than 0.23 ± 0.05 µgkg-1day-1. The obtained results are reasonable in relation to international guidelines, and do not present any radiological hazard to consumers that could be attributed to the radium and radon in the analyzed water samples.

Bottled mineral and spring water constitute one of the main sources of drinking water. Relevant legal acts in each country individually regulate the highest permitted concentrations of harmful substances in these waters. However, current regulations do not take into account newly emerging contaminants such as BPA. Analysis of the chemical composition of 72 bottled waters from the Polish market showed that undesirable elements occur in quantities that do not exceed the maximum permissible concentrations. Special attention should be paid to bottled therapeutic water, which may contain elevated concentrations of some micronutrients, such as Al, B, Ba, Fe, Mn, or Sr contributing to the pattern of health risk with excessive consumption of this type of water. The presence of BPA was confirmed in 25 tested waters. The calculated hazard index values showed that the most exposed group are children up to 12 years of age. The greatest attention should be paid to waters with high mineralisation, for which the calculated risk values are the highest.

Balneotherapy includes practices and methods using medically and legally recognized mineral-medicinal waters, muds and natural gases from natural springs for therapeutic purposes. One of the most widely used method in balneotherapy is bathing with thermal mineral water. In the course of the years, scientific community has produced an increasing number of evidences that this practice is an effective method for treating signs and symptoms of several pathologies such as rheumatic, cardiovascular and dermatological diseases. This systematic review is aimed at evaluating the effect of balneotherapy with thermal water baths as a treatment to manage signs and symptoms of patients affected by all types of dermatological diseases. The systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA Statement, and its protocol was registered on PROSPERO platform (CRD42022295913). The research was performed on the databases Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane. We included clinical trials evaluating the effects of balneotherapy using thermal mineral water baths for managing dermatological diseases in humans, published in English and Italian language. Eight studies were included, seven of them enrolled adults affected by psoriasis and one studied atopic dermatitis patients. The common result of all the articles included was a clear improvement of signs and symptoms of psoriasis and eczematous diseases after use of thermal mineral water baths. These effects seem to be strictly related to physical and chemical properties of thermal water used for balneotherapy. However, studies in this field are still limited to support robust evidence of the effectiveness of balneotherapy using thermal mineral water baths and often their quality is low. Thus, new clinical studies need to be carried out, using more correct methods for conducting the studies and for processing statistical data.

BACKGROUND: For centuries, spring and other natural waters have been recommended as external or internal remedies for numerous diseases. For studies that examined the effects of drinking mineral waters against heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or functional dyspepsia, a systematic review is lacking. OBJECTIVES: The main aim of this systematic review was to examine the effects of drinking natural mineral waters on heartburn from various causes by identifying all published intervention studies and critically appraising their methods as well as summarizing their results. METHODS: We systematically searched the largest medical literature database MEDLINE, further relevant web sources, and gray literature for randomized and nonrandomized trials, with or without control groups, up to September 2021 and no language restrictions. Further inclusion criteria were adult patients with heartburn, drinking cure with natural mineral water as the intervention, compared to no or other interventions (care-as-usual, waiting list). We defined the reduction of heartburn symptoms and duration of disease episodes as primary and quality of life as secondary outcomes. Two reviewers independently carried out the study quality assessments (risk of bias) using the National Institutes of Health-Study Quality Assessment Tools. RESULTS: Nine trials comprising 393 patients from Italy, Russia, Ukraine, and Germany fulfilled all inclusion criteria. We identified three randomized controlled trials (all with poor methodological quality), plus six before-after (pre/post) intervention studies without a control group. The intervention groups of the three comparative trials seemed to show a stronger reduction of self-reported heartburn symptoms, and duration of heartburn episodes than the respective control groups; however, they all had poor methodological quality. CONCLUSION: Based on the best available evidence of clinical studies, we cannot recommend or advise against drinking natural mineral waters as a treatment for heartburn. The potential benefits of natural mineral waters that were reported in some studies with a lower evidence level (e.g., lacking a control group) should be verified by good quality randomized clinical trials with adequate comparison groups and longer follow-up periods.HintergrundSeit Jahrhunderten werden Quell- und andere natürliche Wässer als äußerliche oder innerliche Heilmittel für zahlreiche Krankheiten empfohlen. PURPOSE: This study investigated the color stability of different commercially available silicone materials for facial prostheses upon exposure to everyday beverages. It was hypothesized that the beverages would not alter the color of the silicone under conditions simulating daily exposure. METHODS: Sixty specimens were fabricated using two materials - VST-50 and Silfy - and exposed to commercially available cold mineral water, tea, or coffee. Specimen color was evaluated on days 1 and 15. The color was measured with a spectrophotometer based on CIELab system and color differences were calculated as ΔE. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: The mean ΔE values after 15 days of exposure to mineral water, cold green tea, and coffee were 1.016, 3.480, and 3.636 for VST-50 and 0.440, 0.798, and 1.425 for Silfy, respectively. Both materials showed significant differences in color, and VST-50 showed a greater color change than Silfy, especially for coffee. CONCLUSION: Pigmented silicone elastomers have low color stability, leading to an overall color change in silicone prostheses when exposed to pigmented beverages. Color changes in such prostheses can be mitigated by selecting materials with better color stability to extend their longevity.

Stress-induced intestinal epithelial injury (IEI) and a delay in repair in infancy are predisposing factors for refractory gut diseases in adulthood, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Hence, it is necessary to develop appropriate mitigation methods for mammals when experiencing early-life stress (ELS). Weaning, as we all know, is a vital procedure that all mammalian newborns, including humans, must go through. Maternal separation (MS) stress in infancy (regarded as weaning stress in animal science) is a commonly used ELS paradigm. Drinking silicon-rich alkaline mineral water (AMW) has a therapeutic effect on enteric disease, but the specific mechanisms involved have not been reported. Herein, we discover the molecular mechanism by which silicon-rich AMW repairs ELS-induced IEI by maintaining intestinal stem cell (ISC) proliferation and differentiation through the glucagon-like peptide (GLP)2-Wnt1 axis. Mechanistic study showed that silicon-rich AMW activates GLP2-dependent Wnt1/ß-catenin pathway, and drives ISC proliferation and differentiation by stimulating Lgr5+ ISC cell cycle passage through the G1-S-phase checkpoint, thereby maintaining intestinal epithelial regeneration and IEI repair. Using GLP2 antagonists (GLP23-33) and small interfering RNA (SiWnt1) in vitro, we found that the GLP2-Wnt1 axis is the target of silicon-rich AMW to promote intestinal epithelium regeneration. Therefore, silicon-rich AMW maintains intestinal epithelium regeneration through the GLP2-Wnt1 axis in piglets under ELS. Our research contributes to understanding the mechanism of silicon-rich AMW promoting gut epithelial regeneration and provides a new strategy for the alleviation of ELS-induced IEI.

Este trabalho objetiva averiguar a presença de matérias estranhas presentes em águas minerais envasadas e sugerir a utilização da Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), como técnica adequada para detecção e contagem. Oito amostras de água mineral foram obtidas e subamostras de 100 mL foram filtradas em membranas, que foram secas e recobertas com platina e observadas em MEV. Áreas de 21.025 µm2 foram focalizadas e as partículas contadas. Realizaram-se análise de variância e o teste de Regwq para a comparação das médias das contagens. Diferentes partículas visualizadas foram registradas sob distintas magnificações. A análise de variância revelou alta significância entre a quantidade de matérias estranhas das amostras, indicando que as amostras diferiram bastante quanto a essa característica. As médias obtidas obedeceram a uma estratificação, mas foram estimadas com grande precisão, sugerindo-se que a subdivisão em 10 grupos de contagem e a extrapolação para o volume de 100 mL é uma estimativa confiável para a contagem de partículas filtradas nesse volume de água. Foi mostrado que o MEV se apresentou como instrumento auxiliar adequado para a contagem de matérias estranhas em amostras de águas minerais envasadas, especialmente quando suas dimensões não permitem sua identificação convencionalmente. This work aims to investigate the presence of microscopic foreign materials in bottled mineral waters and suggest the use of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) as a suitable technique for counting foreign matter. Eight samples of mineral water were obtained, and 100 mL subsamples were filtered through membranes, which were then dried, coated with platinum, and observed under SEM. Areas of 21,025 µm2 were analysed, and the particles present were counted. Variance analysis was carried out, and the Regwq test was applied to compare the counting averages. Samples of the dirt particles were imaged at different magnifications. The analysis of variance revealed high significance among the samples, indicating substantial differences between them. The averages followed a stratification pattern and were estimated with great precision, suggesting that the subdivision into 10 count groups and the extrapolation to 100 mL volume is a reliable estimate for the count of particles filtered in this volume of water. It was shown that SEM was a suitable instrument for counting and observing foreign matter and dirt in samples of bottled natural mineral waters, especially when their dimensions are too small to be detected by conventional methods. Quantifying the water and mineral losses in feces is essential to determine the optimal composition of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) for diarrheic animals. In a randomized complete block design, this study evaluated water, mineral, and blood acid-base balance of calves with naturally occurring diarrhea receiving ORS or a placebo. On d 0, 45 calves (age: 18 ± 3.2 d; mean ± SD) were selected based on the presence of visual signs of diarrhea, such as dirty tail or wet feces, along with clinical symptoms evaluated by measuring the skin turgor and the degree of enophthalmos. On d 1, calves were divided into blocks of 3 animals based on blood base excess (BE) measured at 0900 h, and within each block, calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments (15 calves per treatment) including (1) a hypertonic ORS (HYPER; Na+ = 110 mmol/L; 370 mOsm/kg; strong ion difference [SID] = 60 mEq/L), (2) a hypotonic ORS with low Na+ (HYPO; Na+ = 77 mmol/L; 278 mOsm/kg; SID = 71 mEq/L), and (3) a placebo consisting of lukewarm water with 5 g/L of whey powder (CON). Milk replacer (MR) was fed through teat buckets twice daily at 0630 h and 1700 h in 2 equally sized meals of 2.5 L from d 1 to 3 and of 3.0 L on d 4 and 5. Treatments consisting of 2.0 L lukewarm solutions were administered between milk meals from d 1 to 3 at 1200 h and 2030 h through teat buckets. Refusals of MR and treatments were recorded daily, and blood samples were collected from the jugular vein once daily at arrival in the afternoon of d 0 and at 0900 h from d 1 to 5 after arrival. Urine and feces were collected quantitatively over a 48-h period from 1200 h on d 1 to 1200 h on d 3, and a representative sample of each 24-h period was stored. In addition, the volume of extracellular fluid was evaluated on d 2 by postprandial sampling over a 4-h period relative to the injection of sodium thiosulfate at 1300 h. Total daily fluid intake (MR, treatment, and water) from d 1 to 3 was greater in HYPER (LSM ± SEM; 8.9 ± 0.36 L/d) and HYPO (7.8 ± 0.34 L/d) than in CON (6.6 ± 0.34 L/d). This resulted in a greater water balance (water intake - fluid output in urine and feces) in calves receiving ORS (59.6 ± 6.28 g/kg BW per 24 h vs. 39.6 ± 6.08 g/kg BW per 24 h). Fecal Na+ losses were greater in HYPER than in the other treatments (81 ± 12.0 mg/kg BW per 24 h vs. 24 ± 11.8 mg/kg BW per 24 h). Blood pH was higher in HYPO (7.41 ± 0.016) than CON (7.35 ± 0.016) over the 5 monitoring days, whereas HYPER (7.37 ± 0.017) did not differ with other treatments. In this experimental model, diarrheic calves were likely unable to absorb the high Na+ load from HYPER, resulting in greater Na+ losses in feces, which might have impaired the alkalinizing capacity of HYPER. In contrast, HYPO significantly sustained blood acid-base balance compared with CON, whereas HYPER did not. This suggests that low tonicity ORS with a high SID are more suitable for diarrheic calves.

BACKGROUND: Dietary approaches are recommended for the management of chronic constipation. Until now, there has been no systematic review and meta-analysis on foods, drinks and diets in constipation. AIMS: To investigate the effect of foods, drinks and diets on response to treatment, stool output, gut transit time, symptoms, quality of life, adverse events and compliance in adults with chronic constipation via a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Studies were identified using electronic databases (12th July 2023). Intervention trials (randomised controlled trials [RCTs], non-randomised, uncontrolled) were included. Risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane 2.0 (RCTs) or JBI Critical Appraisal (uncontrolled trials). Data from RCTs only were synthesised using risk ratios (RRs), mean differences (MDs), standardised mean differences (95% CI) using random-effects. RESULTS: We included 23 studies (17 RCTs, 6 uncontrolled; 1714 participants): kiwifruit (n = 7), high-mineral water (n = 4), prunes (n = 2), rye bread (n = 2), mango, fig, cereal, oat bran, yoghurt, water supplementation, prune juice, high-fibre diet, no-fibre diet (n = 1). Fruits resulted in higher stool frequency than psyllium (MD: +0.36 bowel movements [BM]/week, [0.25-0.48], n = 232), kiwifruits in particular (MD: +0.36 BM/week, [0.24-0.48], n = 192); there was no difference for prunes compared with psyllium. Rye bread resulted in higher stool frequency than white bread (MD: +0.43 BM/week, [0.03-0.83], n = 48). High-mineral water resulted in higher response to treatment than low-mineral water (RR: 1.47, [1.20-1.81], n = 539). CONCLUSIONS: Fruits and rye bread may improve certain constipation-related outcomes. There is a scarcity of evidence on foods, drinks and diets in constipation and further RCTs are needed.

A protocol study was designed to examine cutaneous behavior after continuous application of a peloid in the dry mineral residue of Lanjarón-Capuchina natural mineral water. This study aims to analyze the biomechanical behavior of normal skin using various non-invasive bioengineering techniques after the application of this peloid. We determine the effects of its application for 3 months on 38 healthy volunteers (41.4 ± 5.9 years, range 32-58) without a previous history of skin diseases by courtmetry, sebumetry, pH-metry, reviscometry, and tewametry. It was shown that the production of cutaneous sebum is significantly reduced by 6%, trans epidermal skin loss (TEWL) by 21%, skin fatigue by 30%, elasticity increased by 19%, firmness by 5%, and a skin redensification by 6% was obtained under these experimental conditions. Disparate and non-significant results were obtained concerning pH and viscoelasticity. Continuous skin care with the Lanjarón-Capuchina natural peloid modifies skin behavior, normalizing sebaceous secretion, favoring the biomechanical properties of the skin and the skin barrier function without modifying skin homeostasis.

Objective: Hypertension is a recognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), and dietary sodium intake has been linked to its development. However, mineral water high in bicarbonate and sodium does not appear to have adverse effects on blood pressure.This study examines the effects of consuming a mineral water high in bicarbonate and sodium (HBS) compared to a low bicarbonate and sodium (LBS) mineral water on blood pressure and related factors.Methods: A randomized controlled intervention was conducted with 94 healthy participants, consuming 1,500 - 2,000 mL daily of either mineral water high in bicarbonate and sodium (HBS water, n = 49) or low in bicarbonate and sodium (LBS water, n = 45). Blood pressure, anthropometrics, and urinary calcium and sodium excretion were assessed at baseline and after 28 days. 3-day food protocols were assessed to evaluate possible dietary changes.Results: Blood pressure changes did not differ between the groups. Both normotensive and hypertensive subjects showed similar changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in response to the different test waters. Serum aldosterone decreased significantly in both groups, with a greater reduction in the HBS group. Urinary calcium excretion significantly decreased (p = 0.002) and sodium excretion increased in the HBS group. Multiple linear regression analyses indicated no association between urinary sodium excretion and systolic blood pressure increase in the HBS group (B = 0.046, p = 0.170). Changes in urinary sodium excretion did not correlate with changes in serum aldosterone in the same group (r=-0.146, p = 0.350).Conclusions: The study revealed no significant differences in blood pressure changes between individuals consuming HBS water and LBS water. Notably, the additional sodium intake from the test water was effectively excreted.Trial registration: This trial was registered in the German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS00025341, https://drks.de/search/en).


What is the context? High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart diseases, one of the leading causes of illness and death worldwide. Too much sodium in the diet has been linked to the development of high blood pressure. However, some high-sodium mineral waters appear to have a different effect on blood pressure. Researchers have demonstrated that mineral waters high in both sodium and bicarbonate may not have harmful effects on blood pressure.What is the study about? In this study, 94 healthy participants between the ages 30 to 65 were divided into two groups. One group drank high-bicarbonate, high-sodium mineral water, and the other group drank low-bicarbonate, low-sodium mineral water for four weeks. Blood pressure was measured before and at the end of the study. The participants were asked not to change their usual diet and physical activity during the study.What are the results? Blood pressure did not change differently between the two groups. Consumption of high-sodium, high-bicarbonate mineral water increased sodium intake, but sodium was effectively excreted in the urine. Moreover, aldosterone, a blood pressure regulating hormone, decreased with mineral water consumption. Its reduction is good for maintaining stable blood pressure.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the fluoride concentration of bottled waters from municipalities in northeastern Brazil. Material and Methods: Bottled mineral waters were purchased in two periods at different commercial places of four large municipalities (João Pessoa, Campina Grande, Patos, and Cajazeiras) in the Paraíba state. The municipalities selected to present the following annual average temperature: João Pessoa 26.5 °C, Campina Grande 23.3 °C, Patos and Cajazeiras 27.5 °C. Fluoride concentration was determined using a combined ion-specific electrode. Readings (in mV) were conducted in triplicates for each standard solution and converted into fluoride concentration (mg F/L) using the Excel® software. Results: A total of 72 samples from six brands of bottled water were analyzed. The fluoride concentrations of all samples were low (0.11-0.21mg/L) but higher than those reported on the label and varied among different batches of the same brand. Conclusion: The fluoride levels in bottled water vary among brands, and these actual values are not stated in the labels.
