BACKGROUND: No reports have been made on the entire extrinsic innervation of the heart in small laboratory animals. Therefore, this study examined the detailed morphotopographic features of the extrinsic cardiac autonomic nervous system (ECANS) with its adjacent structures (1) to record the general morpho-topography and variations of the ECANS in guinea pigs, (2) to compare it with previous reports on common laboratory rodents (rats, mice, and Syrian hamsters), rabbits, domesticated animals (cats, dogs, sheep, goats, oxen, pigs, and horses), primates, and humans, and (3) to infer the macroscopic evolutionary changes they presented. METHODS: The sympathetic ganglia, vagi, and emitting cardiac nerves/branches in the cervical and thoracic regions were dissected in 24 sides of 12 formalin-fixed, arterially injected adult male and female guinea pigs under a stereomicroscope. RESULTS: The ECANS in guinea pigs presented following general morphologic characteristics: (1) constant existence of the cranial cervical ganglion (CG) and placing caudal to the cranial base over the ventrolateral aspect of the longus capitis muscle, dorsomedial to the common carotid artery and communicating to the first two cervical spinal nerves, (2) the lack of the vago-sympathetic trunk, (3) the existence of the middle cervical ganglion (MG) and lying on the lateral aspect of the longus colli muscle (LC) at the level of the seventh cervical vertebra, (4) constant existence of the cervicothoracic ganglion (CT) composing generally from the caudal cervical ganglion and 1-3 thoracic ganglia and placing ventral to the first and second intercostal spaces over the lateral aspect of the LC and communicating to the eight cervical and first three thoracic spinal nerves in addition to the vertebral nerve, (5) constant existence of the limbs of the ansa subclavia (AS) joining the CT to MG, (6) the existence of individual thoracic ganglia from the 4th to the 12th and joining by single interganglionic branches (IGBs), and communicating to corresponding thoracic nerve, (7) the intimate relation between the caudal part of the thoracic sympathetic chain and the quadratus lumborum muscle, (8) the main cardiac nerves (CNs) emerging from the CT, (9) the lack of CNs springing generally from the CG, ST, AS, MG, or individual thoracic ganglia or their IGBs, and (10) the existence of the cardiac branches (CBs) emerging from the vagi and recurrent laryngeal nerves. The ECANS morphology in guinea pigs also shows sex and laterality differences. CONCLUSIONS: The general anatomical arrangement of the sympathetic components of the ECANS in guinea pigs extremely displaced features common to rats and Syrian hamsters regardless of the existence of MG and the close relation between the thoracic sympathetic chain and the quadratus lumborum muscle. However, the position and organization of the CT, along with its rami communicantes to spinal nerves in guinea pigs quite resembled those seen in rats. The general macroscopic arrangement of the sympathetic components of the ECANS in guinea pigs resembled that seen in rabbits regardless of the organization and location of the CT. The general morphology of the sympathetic components of the ECANS demonstrated markedly morphological variations and similarities among common laboratory rodents, rabbits, domesticated animals (DNs), primates, and humans. The main variations consisted of the position of the CG and its rami communicantes with the spinal nerves, the relation between the vagi and sympathetic trunks in the neck, the existence of the MG, the location and arrangement of the CT, the origins and incidences of the cardiac nerves, and the main sympathetic contributors. The general macroscopic architecture of the parasympathetic components of the ECANS in guinea pigs quite resembled that seen in domesticated animals, primates, and humans. Evolutionary comparative morphologic characteristics of the ECANS are discussed in detail and evolutionary differences and similarities of the ECANS have been found from common laboratory rodents, rabbits, domesticated animals, and primates to humans.

Guinea pigs have proved useful as experimental animal models in studying cerebellar anatomical and structural alterations in human neurological disease; however, they are also currently acquiring increasing veterinary interest as companion animals. The morphometric features of the normal cerebellum in guinea pigs have not been previously investigated using stereology. The objective of the present work was to establish normal volumetric and quantitative stereological parameters for cerebellar tissues in guinea pigs, by means of unbiased design-based stereology. Cerebellar total volume, gray and white matter volume fractions, molecular and granular layers volume fractions, cerebellar surface area, Purkinje cellular and nuclear volumes, and the Purkinje cell total count were stereologically estimated. For this purpose, cerebellar hemispheres from six adult male guinea pigs were employed. Isotropic, uniform random sections were obtained by applying the orientator method, and subsequently processed for light microscopy. The cerebellar total volume, the white and grey matter volume fractions, and the molecular and granular layer volumes were estimated using the Cavalieri's principle and the point counting system. The cerebellar surface area was estimated through the use of test lines; Purkinje cellular and nuclear volumes were analysed using the nucleator technique, whereas the Purkinje cell total count was obtained by means of the optical disector technique. The mean ± standard deviation total volume of a guinea-pig cerebellar hemisphere was 0.11 ± 0.01 cm3 . The mean volumetric proportions occupied by the gray and white matters were, respectively, 78.0 ± 2.6% and 22.0 ± 2.6%, whereas their mean absolute volumes were found to be 0.21 ± 0.02 cm3 and 0.059 ± 0.006 cm3 . The volumes of the molecular and granular layers were estimated at 112.4 ± 20.6 mm3 and 104.4 ± 7.3 mm3 , whereas their mean thicknesses were calculated to be 0.184 ± 0.020 mm and 0.17 ± 0.02 mm. The molecular and granular layers accounted for 40.7 ± 3.9% and 37.4 ± 1.8% of total cerebellar volume respectively. The surface area of the cerebellum measured 611.4 ± 96.8 mm2 . Purkinje cells with a cellular volume of 3210.1 µm3 and with a nuclear volume of 470.9 µm3 had a higher incidence of occurrence. The mean total number of Purkinje cells for a cerebellar hemisphere was calculated to be 253,090 ± 34,754. The morphometric data emerging from the present study provide a set of reference data which might prove valuable as basic anatomical contribution for practical applications in veterinary neurology.

The aim of this work is the analysis of histochemical and morphometric properties of the masseter muscles of Ctenomys talarum and Cavia aperea. The former belongs to a subterranean rodent clade, Ctenomyidae, which has evolved a robust masticatory apparatus adapted to chisel-tooth digging and processing of abrasive grasses; C. aperea belongs to the family Caviidae, with relatively graceful jaws and mandibular musculatures, consistent with less mechanically challenging diets. Adult males were captured, immediately transported to the laboratory, and euthanized in a CO2 chamber. The musculus masseter superficialis and musculus masseter profundus on the left side of the animals were used to analyze the histochemical composition of the fiber types treated with myosin adenosine triphosphatase, succinate dehydrogenase and periodic acid Schiff. The mean fiber diameters, relative areas, and frequencies of each muscle fiber type were calculated. The mm. masseter superficialis and masseter profundus on the right side were used to measure the physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA). Based on this measurement, the internal force (F) was estimated. In the m. masseter profundus of both species and in the m. masseter superficialis of C. aperea intermediate fast oxidative-glycolytic fibers (FOGi) predominated. In the mm. masseter superficialis and masseter profundus of C. talarum the relative area of fast glycolytic (FG) fibers was greater than that of the muscles of C. aperea, whose main muscle fiber component is FOGi fibers. When corrected for body mass differences, PCSA was higher for the mm. masseter superficialis of C. talarum. This and the larger relative area of FG fibers, probably contributes to the exertion of large bite forces in C. talarum, as measured in previous studies.

AIM: To identify the guinea pig eyeball with edge detection and curve fitting and devise a noncontact technology of measuring ocular morphological parameters of small experimental animal. METHODS: Thirty-nine eyeballs of guinea pig eyeballs were photographed to obtain the anterior and posterior surface; transverse and sagittal planes after the eyeballs were eviscerated. Next, the eyeball photos were input into digital image analysis software; the corresponding photo pixels-actual length ratio was acquired by a proportional scale. The contour lines of the eyeballs were identified by edge detection technology; conic curve fitting was applied to fit the contour line of the eyeball. The maximum and minimum diameters, the horizontal and vertical diameters, eccentricity, tilt angle, cross-sectional area, equatorial circumference, retrobulbar equatorial maximum length, corneal radius of curvature (CRC) in central region, and the whole cornea were calculated according to the geometric principles. The corneal data of in vitro study were compared with the in vivo results. RESULTS: The contour line of the selected guinea pig eye was identified correctly by edge detection. There were no significant differences between anterior and posterior surfaces of one eyeball in the maximum diameters, eccentricity, cross-sectional area, equatorial circumference, and tilt angle (P > 0.01). There were significant differences of eccentricity and CRC between central region and the whole cornea (P < 0.01). There were no significant differences between keratometer in vivo and cornea in vitro. CONCLUSION: It was feasible to measure an experimental animal eye in a noncontact way. Edge detection and curve fitting technology could accurately evaluate the ocular morphological parameters.

The amygdala is a part of neural networks that contribute to the regulation of emotional behaviours and emotional learning, stress response, and olfactory, pheromonal and reproductive functions. All these various functions are processed by the three main functional systems, frontotemporal, autonomic and olfactory, which are derived from different telencephalic sources (claustrum, striatum and olfactory cortex) and are represented, respectively, by the basolateral complex (BLC), the central complex (CC) and corticomedial complex (CMC) of the amygdala. The question arises of how these three functional systems evolved during mammalian phylogeny to fit the amygdala to specific needs of various animals. In the present study, we provide quantitative information regarding the individual volumes and neuron numbers in the BLC, CC and CMC of the common shrew, guinea pig, rabbit, fox and pig, a series of animals arranged according to increasing size and complexity of the brain. The results show that, in this series of animals, the BLC underwent a gradual size increase in volume and number of neurons, whereas the CMC was gradually reduced with regard to both these measures. The CC was more or less conserved across studied species. For example, the volume of the amygdala in pigs is ~250 times larger than that in shrews and it also has almost 26 times as many neurons as the amygdala of shrews. However, the volumes of the BLC, CC and CMC were ~380, 208 and 148 times larger, respectively, in pigs than in shrews. The number of neurons in these three regions was ~38, 23 and 20 times greater, respectively, in pigs than in shrews. The results also show striking morphometric similarities of the amygdala in the guinea pig and rabbit as well as fox and pig. For example, the percentages of neurons in the fox and pig are 42.23% and 42.78%, respectively, for the BLC, 16.64% and 16.58%, respectively, for the CC, and 41.12% and 40.64%, respectively, for the CMC. In conclusion, our results indicate that the amygdala does not evolve as a single unit but, instead, the three main functional systems evolved independently, which suggests that brain structures with major functional links evolve together independently of evolutionary changes in other unrelated structures. The size progression of the BLC parallels the size progression of the neocortex with which it is strongly functionally linked, whereas the CMC is strongly connected to olfactory regions, and all these structures follow the same regression course. Remarkable morphometric similarity of the amygdala in the guinea pig and rabbit as well as in the fox and pig, however, suggest that there must also be another mechanism shaping the morphology of the amygdala and the brain during evolution. The gradual nature of size changes in the BLC and CMC support this hypothesis as well.

Guinea pigs are animal models widely used in research related to developmental biology. The objective of this work was to demonstrate the process of formation and differentiation of urinary organs in females of the species in the prenatal period. Four females were used at 25, 30, 45 and >65 DG (days of gestation). The animals were dissected, and then macroscopic and microscopic descriptions of the urinary organs were performed. At 25 DG metanephros were present in the urogenital crest into the abdominal cavity. Collecting ducts and glomerular precursor cells could be visualized. After this period, metanephros underwent microstructural modifications to form the kidneys at the end of the prenatal period. After 30 DG, the renal parenchyma already had a cortex, where the glomerulus and proximal convoluted tubules were present; and the medulla, where distal convoluted tubules, collecting ducts, and pelvis were present. The pelvis of each kidney was drained by the ureters. The ureters also underwent tissue differentiation to be differentiated (mucosa with transitional epithelium and lamina propria of connective tissue, muscular, and adventitia) at the end of the prenatal period. The urinary vesicle also underwent tissue changes to form the tunics similar to those found in the ureters, with emphasis on the greater volume of the muscular tunica and the lamina propria that constituted the submucosa in this organ. The pelvic urethra was evidenced by a mucosa lined by transitional epithelium, submucosa, muscular and adventitia. Finally, a partial clitoral urethra and a urethral meatus in the prepuce of the clitoris were also evidenced. The urethral channel began to form with the emergence of the urethral plate and the urethral groove at 30 DG and thereafter with the fusion of the urethral folds to form a partially channeled urethra in the clitoris. A urethral meatus was observed in the most distal portion of the clitoral tissue, formed by the fusion of the prepuce. It is concluded that the urinary organs of guinea pig have similar development to that described in domestic animals, except for the partial clitoral urethra and evident urethral meatus.(AU)


Os porquinhos-da-índia são modelos animais amplamente utilizados em pesquisas relacionadas a biologia do desenvolvimento. O objetivo deste trabalho foi demonstrar o processo de formação e diferenciação dos órgãos urinários em fêmeas da espécie no período pré-natal. Foram utilizadas quatro fêmeas aos 25, 30, 45 e >65 DG (dias de gestação). Os animais foram dissecados e então, realizaram-se descrições macroscópicas e microscópicas dos órgãos urinários. Aos 25 DG os metanefros estavam presentes na crista urogenital da cavidade abdominal. Podiam ser visualizados ductos coletores e células precursoras glomerulares. Após este período, os metanefros sofreram modificações microestruturais para formar os rins ao final do período pré-natal. Após os 30 DG, o parênquima renal já apresentava um córtex, onde estavam presentes os glomérulos e túbulos convolutos proximais, e a medula onde estavam presentes túbulos convolutos distais, ductos coletores e a pelve. A pelve de cada rim era drenada pelos ureteres. Os ureteres também sofreram diferenciação tecidual para estarem com suas túnicas diferenciadas (mucosa com epitélio de transição e lâmina própria de tecido conjuntivo; muscular; e, adventícia) ao final do período pré-natal. A vesícula urinária também passou por modificações teciduais para formar as túnicas semelhantes as dos ureteres, com destaque para o maior volume da túnica muscular e a lâmina própria que constituiu a submucosa neste órgão. Uma uretra pélvica foi evidenciada por uma mucosa revestida por epitélio de transição, submucosa, muscular e adventícia. Por último, uma uretra parcialmente clitoriana e um meato uretral no prepúcio do clitóris também foi evidenciado. O canal uretral começou a se formar com o aparecimento da placa uretral e do sulco uretral aos 30 DG e posteriormente com a fusão das pregas uretrais para formar uma uretra parcialmente canalizada no clitóris. Observou-se um meato uretral na porção mais distal do tecido clitoriano, formado pela fusão do prepúcio. Conclui-se que os órgãos urinários do porquinho-da-índia possuem desenvolvimento semelhante ao descrito em animais domésticos, com exceção da uretra parcialmente clitoriana e do meato uretral evidente.(AU)

The formation of the caudal vena cava is a complex process involving development, regression, and anastomosis. In mammals, the normal caudal vena cava runs to the right side of the abdominal aorta, while duplication of the caudal vena cava has been identified as a congenital abnormality in both companion animals and humans. The present study demonstrates that Slc:Hartley guinea pigs frequently possess asymptomatic duplicated caudal vena cava. The prevalence was 30% and 24% for males and females, respectively, with no sex-related differences. In accordance with Saad et al. (2012)'s criteria, duplicated caudal vena cava were classified into two distinct variations. The dominant variation was a complete duplication without iliac anastomosis where the left caudal vena cava continued from the left common iliac vein and joined the left renal vein; the left renal vein ran to the right to join the right caudal vena cava. The alternative variation was an incomplete duplication where the left caudal vena cava joined the right infrarenal caudal vena cava at a more cranial point than in normal cases; the renal segment was unchanged. Iliac anastomosis was not found in any cases. Duplicated caudal vena cava neither affected the body weight nor the kidney weight. In conclusion, Slc:Hartley guinea pigs frequently possess asymptomatic duplicated caudal vena cava in the absence of iliac anastomosis and appear to be a novel and useful animal model for duplicated caudal vena cava in animals and humans.

RESUMEN

The female genital tract originates from the Müllerian ducts during embryological development. Fusion of the ducts occurs in different segments depending on the animal species, resulting in a variational number of the respective organ. Current literature on genital tract morphology of laboratory rodents is controversial. Therefore, the present study aimed at determining an anatomically correct definition of the uterus in laboratory guinea pigs, mice and rats. In all three rodent species, we found two separate cervical canals that communicate with an individual uterus via discrete ostia uteri interna. The correct anatomical definition should therefore be uterus duplex bicollis, vagina simplex.

The purpose of the present study was to define the applicability of tissue clearing to the field of otology. We combined tissue clearing with vital staining perfusion via a pumping system to examine the vascular anatomy of temporal bones in laboratory animals. We used six different types of species including Korean wild mouse, mouse, Mongolian gerbil, hamsters and Guinea pigs. A mixture of Alcian blue reagent and 4% paraformaldehyde was circulated throughout the entire circulatory system of the animal via a perfusion pump system. Transparency images were obtained from the temporal bones according to the protocol of the SunHyun 3D Imaging Kit. In examining the inner surface of the tympanic membrane, flaccid part (pars flaccida) was positioned along the entire marginal area in Guinea pig. In the Guinea pig, unlike the other species, the cortical bone of the mastoid (bullae) was easily removed using cold instruments, allowing a direct approach to the enclosed structures. The distribution and pattern of cochlea melanocytes were compared among the species. "Mobius strip"-like accumulated melanocytes in vestibules were shown in both the Korean wild mouse and mouse. The collateral blood supply to the cochlea in six different species was checked in various pattern. Combining dye infusion with tissue-clearing techniques, we documented the middle ear and transparent inner ear structures in six different species. The information and associated images will help other researchers to develop hypotheses and design experimental investigations.

Animal models are essential to understand healthy human placentation. Guinea pig related rodents became on focus for such purposes. In particular, processes of trophoblast invasion are similar. The latter is associated with a specialized area, the subplacenta. Since previous results showed differences between the guinea pig and its close relative Galea spixii, we aimed to study subplacental development with more detail. We investigated 16 pregnant females of 14 to 55 days of gestation by means of histology, morphometrics, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. The overlap between the fetomaternal blood systems resulted as intimate, suggesting some exchange processes. Proliferation was revealed by three independent methods, being most active in early and mid-gestation, which was in accordance to former results. Though degeneration of tissues took place, the subplacenta was maintained towards term with access to the fetal vascularization, supporting a hypothesis about the release of substances to the fetal unit in advanced gestation. In contrast to other species, the extraplacental trophoblast showed a shift from syncytial streamers to giant cells during mid-gestation. Views on placentation in caviomorphs were influenced by the guinea pig, but our data supported recent studies that the subplacenta had a much greater placidity. In regard to subplacental grow, degeneration and likely also exchange processes, Galea and other species showed a more basal pattern of caviomorphs than the guinea pig. Such differences should be considered, when choosing most adequate animal models for special purposes in comparison to human placentation.(AU)


Modelos animais são essenciais para entender a placenta humana sadia. Neste sentido os roedores relacionados ao porquinho da índia tornaram-se foco para tal entendimento. Em particular, os processos de invasão trofoblástica são semelhantes. O último está associado a uma área especializada, a subplacenta. Uma vez que os resultados anteriores mostraram diferenças entre o porquinho da índia e seu relativo o preá, buscamos estudar o desenvolvimento subplacentário com mais detalhes. Pesquisamos 16 fêmeas gestantes de 14 a 55 dias de gestação por meio de histologia, morfometria, imuno-histoquímica e microscopia eletrônica. A sobreposição entre os sistemas sanguíneos materno e fetal apresentou-se com íntima relação, sugerindo alguns processos de troca. A proliferação foi revelada por três métodos independentes, sendo mais ativos no início e metade da gestação, o que corroborou com os resultados anteriores. Embora a degeneração dos tecidos tenha ocorrido, a subplacenta foi mantida até o termo gestacional com acesso à vascularização fetal, apoiando uma hipótese sobre a liberação de substâncias para a unidade fetal em gestação avançada. Em contraste com outras espécies, o trofoblasto extraplacentário mostrou uma mudança de flâmulas sinciciais para células gigantes durante a metade da gestação. As visualizações sobre a placentação em caviomorfos foram influenciadas pelo porquinho da índia, mas nossos dados apoiaram estudos recentes de que a subplacenta apresentava uma plasticidade muito maior. Em relação ao crescimento subplacentário, a degeneração e provavelmente também os processos de troca, o preá e outras espécies apresentaram um padrão mais basal de caviomorfos do que o porquinho da índia. Tais diferenças devem ser consideradas, ao escolher os modelos animais mais adequados para fins especiais em comparação com a placentação humana.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Lymphoma is an important disease of pet guinea pigs, although validation of immunophenotyping techniques based on cytologic or hematologic samples has not been reported. OBJECTIVE: To describe an immunocytochemical method for immunophenotyping of lymphoma (as either T- or B-cell) in guinea pigs, and to validate antibodies for this purpose. METHODS: Blood and tissues were obtained at the time of necropsy from laboratory guinea pigs and a privately owned dog (control) euthanized for reasons unrelated to lymphoproliferative disease. Fine-needle aspirates of enlarged peripheral lymph nodes were obtained from a case of spontaneous lymphoma in a pet guinea pig. Anti-CD3 and anti-Pax5 antibodies were validated by a combination of western blotting performed on splenic lysates of both the dog and guinea pigs, immunohistochemical studies on normal guinea pig tissues, and immunocytochemistry on normal guinea pig peripheral blood and splenic impression smears. RESULTS: The antibodies bound to antigens of an appropriate size in both the dog and guinea pig splenic lysates by Western blot analysis. Immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry demonstrated the expected distribution of putative T- and B-lymphocytes in normal tissues, peripheral blood, and splenic impression smears. As a proof-of-principle for its clinical utility, this immunocytochemical assay was used to diagnose a B-cell phenotype in a spontaneous lymphoma case in a pet guinea pig. CONCLUSIONS: Here, we validated an immunocytochemical method for immunophenotyping of lymphoma in guinea pigs as either a T- or B-cell phenotype. This enables future research into the clinical attributes of these subtypes and may ultimately improve both prognostication and therapy of lymphoma in guinea pigs.

Guinea pig meat consumption is increasing exponentially worldwide. The evaluation of the contribution of carcass components to carcass quality potentially can allow for the estimation of the value added to food animal origin and make research in guinea pigs more practicable. The aim of this study was to propose a methodology for modelling the contribution of different carcass components to the overall carcass quality of guinea pigs by using non-invasive pre- and post mortem carcass measurements. The selection of predictors was developed through correlation analysis and statistical significance; whereas the prediction models were based on Multiple Linear Regression. The prediction results showed higher accuracy in the prediction of carcass component contribution expressed in grams, compared to when expressed as a percentage of carcass quality components. The proposed prediction models can be useful for the guinea pig meat industry and research institutions by using non-invasive and time- and cost-efficient carcass component measuring techniques.

The aim of this study was to describe origin, localization, and variations of renal arteries in guinea pig. The study was carried out on 26 adult guinea pigs. We prepared corrosion casts of the guinea pig arterial system. Batson's corrosion casting kit no. 17 was used as the casting medium. In 57.7% of specimens, a. renalis dextra was present as a single vessel with different level of its origin from aorta abdominalis. In 38.5% of specimens, two aa. renales dextrae were present with variable origin and arrangement. The presence of three aa. renales dextrae we found in one specimen. In 76.9% of specimens, a. renalis sinistra was present as a single vessel with different level of its origin from aorta abdominalis and variable arrangement. In 23.1% of specimens, we found two aa. renales sinistrae with variable origin and arrangement. The anatomical knowledge of the renal arteries, and its variations are of extreme importance for the surgeon that approaches the retroperitoneal region in several experiments, results of which are extrapolated in human. All mammals (apart from apes and humans) have whiskers that make use of a similar muscle arrangement. Whisker specialists, such as rats and mice, tend to be nocturnal and arboreal, relying on their whisker sense of touch to guide exploration around tree canopies at night. As such, nocturnal arboreal rodents have many whiskers that are organised into a grid-like pattern, and moved using a complex array of muscles. Indeed, most arboreal, nocturnal mammals tend to have specialised whiskers that are longer and arranged in a dense, regular grid, compared with terrestrial, diurnal mammals. The guinea pig diverged early from murid rodents (around 75 million years ago), and are ground-dwelling, diurnal animals. It would be predicted that, as a terrestrial mammal, they may have less whiskers and a reduced muscle architecture compared to arboreal, nocturnal rodents. We examined the mystacial whisker layout, musculature and movement capacity of Guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) whiskers and found that they did indeed have a disorganized whisker layout, with a fortification around the eye area. In addition, there was a reduction in musculature, especially in the intrinsic muscles. Despite guinea pigs not cyclically moving their whiskers, the mystacial musculature was still very similar to that of murid rodents. We suggest that the conserved presence of whisker layout and musculature, even in visual mammals such as primates and guinea pigs, may indicate that whiskers still play an important role in these animals, including protecting the eyes and being involved in tactile social behaviors. Acquired dental disease represents the most common oral disorder of guinea pigs. Most patients are presented with nonspecific clinical signs and symptoms, such as weight loss, reduced food intake, difficulty chewing and/or swallowing. The physical examination must be followed by standard radiography and/or computed tomography, and thorough inspection under general anesthesia. Several complications may follow, including periodontal disease, subluxation of the temporomandibular joint, periapical infection, and abscessation. The dental treatment is aimed to restore the proper length and shape of both the incisor and cheek teeth, associated with medical and supportive treatment. Abscesses should be surgically addressed by complete excision.

This study describes the development of the central nervous system in guinea pigs from 12th day post conception (dpc) until birth. Totally, 41 embryos and fetuses were analyzed macroscopically and by means of light and electron microscopy. The neural tube closure was observed at day 14 and the development of the spinal cord and differentiation of the primitive central nervous system vesicles was on 20th dpc. Histologically, undifferentiated brain tissue was observed as a mass of mesenchymal tissue between 18th and 20th dpc, and at 25th dpc the tissue within the medullary canal had higher density. On day 30 the brain tissue was differentiated on day 30 and the spinal cord filling throughout the spinal canal, period from which it was possible to observe cerebral and cerebellar stratums. At day 45 intumescences were visualized and cerebral hemispheres were divided, with a clear division between white and gray matter in brain and cerebellum. Median sulcus of the dorsal spinal cord and the cauda equina were only evident on day 50. There were no significant structural differences in fetuses of 50 and 60 dpc, and animals at term were all lissencephalic. In conclusion, morphological studies of the nervous system in guinea pig can provide important information for clinical studies in humans, due to its high degree of neurological maturity in relation to its short gestation period, what can provide a good tool for neurological studies.(AU)


Este estudo descreve o desenvolvimento do sistema nervoso central em guinea pig do 12º dia pós-concepção (dpc) até ao nascimento. No total, 41 embriões e fetos foram analisados macroscopicamente e por microscopia de luz e eletrônica. O fechamento do tubo neural foi observado no dia 14 e o desenvolvimento da medula espinhal e diferenciação das vesículas primitivas do sistema nervoso central foram observados no dia 20. Histologicamente, o tecido cerebral indiferenciado foi observado como uma massa de tecido mesenquimal entre os dias 18 e 20 e no 25º dia o tecido no interior do canal medular apresentou maior densidade. No dia 30 o tecido cerebral apresentou-se diferenciado, período no qual a medula espinhal preenchia todo o canal vertebral e foi possível observar os estratos cerebral e cerebelar. No dia 45 as intumescências cervical e lombar foram visualizadas e os hemisférios cerebrais estavam divididos, com uma clara distinção entre substância branca e cinzenta no cérebro e cerebelo. O sulco mediano dorsal da medula espinhal e a cauda equina foram evidentes apenas no dia 50. Não houve diferenças estruturais significativas em fetos de 50 e 60 dpc e animais a termo eram todos lisencefálicos. Estudos morfológicos do sistema nervoso em guinea pig podem fornecer informações importantes para estudos clínicos em seres humanos devido ao alto grau de maturidade neurológica em relação ao seu período de gestação curto, fato que servir como excelente ferramenta em estudos neurológicos.(AU)

Understanding of the reproductive function is essential for both, the establishment of appropriate management systems, and for the use of new species as animal models. In this study, we used light and electron microscopy to characterize the sexual development stages of the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) in specimens of 30, 45 and 90 days of age. We observed the differentiation of spermatocytes only through transmission electron microscopy in the leptotene, zygotene and pachytene phases of meiosis, in 30-day-old animals. During puberty, there was differentiation of the germinative epithelium and formation of the acrosome. Spermatozoa, however, were not detected. Thus, we could infer that puberty happens after 45 days of age. Sexual maturity was evident in 90-day-old specimens. Our results showed that changes in the testicular germinative epithelium during the postnatal sexual development in guinea pig led to morphological changes, including the ones related to the development of Leydig and Sertoli cells, which are directly related to puberty. In this work, we provide new morphological subsidies for a better understanding of reproductive parameters of this species, enabling its use as an animal model in the field of the reproductive biology.(AU)


A função reprodutiva é um fator de vital compreensão tanto para o estabelecimento de sistemas apropriados de manejo, quanto para o uso de novas espécies como modelos animais. Neste estudo através da microscopia de luz e eletrônica caracterizou-se a fase de desenvolvimento sexual do porquinho-da-Índia (Cavia porcellus) em espécimes de 30, 45 e 90 dias de desenvolvimento. Nos animais de 30 dias, a diferenciação dos espermatócitos foi visualizada somente na microscopia eletrônica de transmissão em leptóteno, zigóteno e paquíteno. Durante a puberdade, houve diferenciação do epitélio germinativo, formação do acrossoma, porém não foram evidenciados espermatozóides, assim, infere-se que a puberdade acontece a partir dos 45 dias de idade. A maturidade sexual foi evidente aos 90 dias de idade. Nossos resultados mostraram que ao longo do desenvolvimento sexual pós-natal do porquinho-da-Índia, mudanças no epitélio germinativo testicular levam há alterações morfológicas, inclusive com relação ao desenvolvimento das células de Sertoli e de Leydig, as quais estão diretamente relacionadas com a puberdade. Assim, novos subsídios morfológicos são fornecidos para um melhor entendimento dos parâmetros reprodutivos desta espécie, a fim de viabilizar sua utilização como modelo animal no campo da biologia reprodutiva.(AU)

O preá é um roedor típico da caatinga pertencente à família Caviidae. Considerando a inexistência de dados sobre o arco aórtico do preá, foi realizado este estudo tendo como objetivo descrever os ramos colaterais do arco aórtico neste cavídeo, e dessa forma, contribuir com dados para biologia da espécie. Foram utilizados vinte preás machos provenientes de estudos anteriores e encontravam-se armazenados em freezer no Centro de Multiplicação de Animais Silvestres (CEMAS/UFERSA). Os animais foram descongelados, a cavidade torácica foi aberta, a aorta canulada e o sistema vascular lavado com solução salina e em seguida, injetado látex Neoprene corado com pigmento vermelho, amarelo ou branco. Posteriormente, os animais foram fixados em formol e depois de 72 horas, dissecados e analisados, sendo obtidos desenhos esquemáticos e os exemplares mais representativos fotografados. O arco aórtico do preá emitiu como ramos colaterais, o tronco braquiocefálico e a artéria subclávia esquerda. O tronco braquiocefálico originou na maioria das peças estudadas, a artéria carótida comum esquerda e o tronco braquiocarotídeo, do qual surgem as artérias subclávia direita e carótida comum direita. As artérias subclávias direita e esquerda em todos os animais estudados emitiram a artéria vertebral, a artéria torácica interna, a artéria cervical superficial, o tronco costocervical e a artéria axilar. O padrão da formação do arco aórtico do preá assemelhou-se ao observado em outros roedores, tais como no mocó, no porquinho-da-índia e na chinchila...


Galea spixii is a typical rodent of the caatinga belonging to the Caviidae family. Considering the lack of data on the aortic arch of the galea, this study aimed to describe the collateral branches of the aortic arch in this specie and to contributes to knowledge of its biology. Twenty males from previous studies were used which had been stored in a freezer at Multiplication Center of Wild Animals (CEMAS/UFERSA). The animals were thawed, the thoracic cavity was opened and the aorta cannulated vasculature was washed with saline and then injected with Neoprene latex colored with red pigment, yellow or white. Subsequently, the animals were fixed in formalin and after 72 hours dissected and analyzed, to obtain schematic drawings and the most representative samples were photographed. The cavy aortic arch issued as collateral branches, the brachiocephalic trunk and the left subclavian artery. The brachiocephalic trunk afforded in most of the specimens the left common carotid artery and the brachiocarotid trunk, where the right subclavian and right common carotid arteries arise. The right and left subclavian arteries in all animals studied issued the vertebral artery, internal thoracic artery, superficial cervical artery costocervical trunk and axillary artery. The pattern of formation of the aortic arch of galea was similar to that observed in other rodents, such as the kerodon, the guinea pig and chinchilla....

The aim of this study was to describe the arterial arrangement of the cervical spinal cord in the guinea pig. The study was carried out on 20 adult English self guinea pigs using corrosion and dissection technique. Batson's corrosion casting kit no. 17(©) was used as a casting medium. The origin of the ventral spinal artery from the left vertebral artery was found on average in 35% of the cases and from the right vertebral artery on average in 40% of the cases. The ventral spinal artery with origin from the anastomosis of two medial branches was found on average in 25% of the cases. The presence of ventral radicular branches of rami spinales entering the ventral spinal artery in the cervical region was observed in 42% of the cases on the right side and in 58% of the cases on the left side. The presence of dorsal radicular branches of rami spinales that reached the spinal cord was observed in 63% of the cases on the left side and in 37% of the cases on the right side. The number of radicular branches supplying the spinal cord is greater in guinea pig than in humans.
