Background and Objectives: Enucleation of an eye is the most invasive procedure in ophthalmologic surgery. It can be the result of various diseases (malignant/chronic/trauma/infection) and is nevertheless relatively rare, but leads to the loss of a strongly innervated neuronal organ. This study systematically evaluates postoperative pain levels following enucleation of the eye globe. Materials and Methods: This prospective single-center study enrolled twenty-four patients undergoing enucleation of the eye globe. Perioperatively all patients completed (preoperative day, day of surgery, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd day following surgery) standardized questionnaires concerning their pain experience and treatment-related side-effects (internal protocol, QUIPS, painDETECT®). Patients received usual pain therapy in an unstandardized individual manner. Results: Preoperatively, mean average pain intensity of all included patients was 3.29 ± 2.46 (range, 0-8), 3.29 ± 3.24 (range, 0-8) on the day of surgery, 4.67 ± 1.90 (range, 2-10) on day 1, 3.25 ± 1.39 (range, 1-6) on day 2, and 2.71 ± 1.30 (range, 1-6) on day 3 after surgery. Mean maximum pain intensity was 4.71 ± 3.28 (range, 0-10) preoperatively, 4.04 ± 3.78 (range, 0-10) on the day of surgery, 5.75 ± 2.01 (range, 2-10) on day 1, 4.25 ± 1.89 (range, 2-10) on day 2, and 3.88 ± 1.54 (range, 2-8) on day 3 after surgery. Nineteen patients (79.2%) stated that they would have preferred more pain therapy. Conclusions: Patients undergoing eye enucleation report pain sensations in need of intervention in this university hospital. Thus, effective standardized pain treatment concepts are now a high priority to be established in an interdisciplinary manner containing standardized regimens and continuous regional procedures. Awareness of this problem in the medical team should be sharpened through targeted training and information.

INTRODUCTION: Implant exposure is the most frequent complication after evisceration or enucleation, and multiple surgical techniques for the management of orbital implant exposure. The goal of our study is to investigate the success rate and risk factors for failure of various surgical procedures. METHODS: This was a retrospective study performed at the University Hospital of Limoges. We collected data from the files of every patient operated on for implant exposure between January 2005 and December 2020. The main criterion was the percentage of success for each procedure. Secondary objectives were to identify risk factors for failure of Müller's muscle flaps and to determine the incidence of post-enucleation socket syndrome depending on whether the orbital implant was maintained. RESULTS: Fifty-one patients were included: 26 patients who underwent Müller's muscle flap, 16 dermis-fat graft, 3 conjunctival flap, 2 amniotic membrane graft, 1 temporalis fascia graft, 1 buccal mucosa graft, 1 implant rotation, and 1 implant exchange. The dermis-fat grafts were more successful (87.5%) than the Müller's muscle flaps (52.2%) (P=0.0213). The study highlighted the importance of good vascularization of the implant (OR=32.00, P-value=0.0245) for the success of Müller's muscle flaps, and we found no statistically significant difference between the patients who maintained their implants and those who did not (P=0.3865) with regard to the incidence of post-enucleation socket syndrome. CONCLUSION: Müller's muscle flap may remain a reasonable option in the management of medium-sized implant exposures of well-vascularized implants confirmed on MRI in patients with no systemic healing disorders. Dermis-fat graft remains the option of choice in other cases, especially in large exposures or complicated orbits.

PURPOSE: Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common intraocular tumor in pediatric age group. The role of genetics has been explored in predicting survival prognosis, but its role in predicting globe salvage remains largely unexplored. We hereby aim to isolate cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from aqueous humor (AH) in RB eyes and validate its use for genetic studies. METHODS: AH was obtained from 26 eyes undergoing enucleation (arm A) or intravitreal chemotherapy (arm B). Isolation of cfDNA was done using QIAamp ® Circulating Nucleic Acid kit, and the cfDNA was utilized for targeted sequencing of RB1 gene. RESULTS: We could isolate cfDNA in all eyes (72% unilateral and 28% bilateral) with a distribution peak between 140 and 160 bp and a mean concentration of 27.75 ng/µl for arm A and 14 ng/µl for arm B. Targeted sequencing done on four samples showed RB1 gene mutations, namely, inframe deletion (c. 78-80del, p.Pro29del), start-loss mutation (c.1A>T, p.Met1?), nonsense mutations (c.2236G>T, p.Glu746Ter), (c.1659T>A, p.Cys553Ter), and (c.2065C>T, p.Gln689Ter), and novel missense mutations (c.672C>A, p.Asp224Glu) and c.692C>T (p.Pro231Leu). Genetic profile of cfDNA extracted from AH and genomic DNA from the tumor tissue was comparable. CONCLUSION: Our study supports the previous reports that AH may be used as a source of tumor-derived cfDNA. This is the first report from South Asia on isolation and genetic analysis of cfDNA from AH of RB eyes and, therefore, a big step forward in paving the role of tumor genetics in RB. Further studies are required to elucidate concordance between the tumor and AH genetic profile.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate factors associated with clinical presentation of uveal melanoma (UM) during the initial two years of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a multi-site, retrospective cohort study of patients treated for uveal melanoma during the first (early) and second (late) year of the pandemic compared with the year prior (control). RESULTS: A total of 48, 67, and 75 patients were in the control, early, and late cohorts, respectively. The early cohort had a higher frequency of large tumors (control: 29.2%, early: 40.3%, late: 29.3%; P < 0.001) at presentation. Both the early and late cohorts had higher rates of enucleation (control: 8.33%, early: 20.9%, late: 18.67%; P ≤ 0.0338) compared to the control cohort. CONCLUSIONS: While there was an increase in large tumors along with a rise in enucleation during the first year of the pandemic, enucleation rates remained elevated even while tumor sizes normalized. PURPOSE: To examine whether children treated for Retinoblastoma (Rb) have impaired orbital development. METHODS: A retrospective case series was performed among children with Rb treated at a single medical center from 2004 to 2020. Orbital volumes and measurements were assessed by 3-dimensional image processing software. The main outcome measures were differences in orbital growth between Rb and non-Rb eyes assessed at last follow-up. RESULTS: Among 44 patients included (mean age 16.09 ± 18.01 months), a positive correlation between age and orbital volume was observed only in the uninvolved, healthy eyes (p = .03). In unilateral cases, orbital growth in the horizontal, vertical, and depth planes was smaller on the affected side compared to the healthy eyes (p < .05). Orbits that underwent enucleation showed decreased growth over time compared to those treated conservatively (p = .017). CONCLUSIONS: Orbital growth rate is slower in the orbits of children treated for Rb compared to healthy orbits. Enucleation negatively affects orbital growth.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of preoperative bupivacaine inferotemporal retrobulbar blocks to postoperative liposome-encapsulated bupivacaine (Nocita) line blocks for analgesia following enucleation. ANIMALS: 39 client-owned dogs (40 eyes) presenting to the Ophthalmology Service for enucleation. METHODS: Dogs were randomly assigned to receive either a preoperative inferotemporal retrobulbar block with 0.5% bupivacaine or a peri-incisional line block with liposome-encapsulated bupivacaine (Nocita) at closure. Patients underwent unilateral enucleation and were hospitalized for 24 hours after surgery. Pain scores were performed by a masked observer with the Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale and the University of Wisconsin Ocular Pain Scale at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 24 hours following surgery. Intraoperative use of blood pressure and anesthetic support mediations as well as need for rescue pain control were recorded and compared between groups. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in rescue rates between treatment groups. When comparing the use of medical intraoperative heart rate, blood pressure, or anesthetic plane support, there were no significant differences in use between groups. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Use of preoperative bupivacaine retrobulbar blocks and postoperative Nocita line blocks were equally effective at postoperative pain control with similarly low complication rates.

Because of its rarity, the diagnosis of optic nerve medulloepithelioma poses a real diagnostic challenge. Medulloepithelioma is a congenital tumor that derives from the primitive medullary epithelium present in the neural tube and the optic vesicle. Its classical location is the ciliary body. Cases of retinal or optic nerve locations have been rarely reported in the literature. Only 11 cases have been published in the English literature. Herein, we report the case of a 2-year-old boy who underwent enucleation of the right eye for a presumed diagnosis of right-eye retinoblastoma, based on the presence of leukocoria on ophthalmological examination. Pathological examination showed an optic nerve medulloepithelioma. A review of the literature is also discussed in our work.

RESUMEN

Visual anosognosia, associated with confabulations and cortical blindness in the context of occipital lobe injury, is known as Anton syndrome. Patients with this syndrome strongly deny their vision loss and confabulate to compensate for both visual loss and memory impairments. In this article, we present a case of a patient with some similarities to Anton syndrome, however, with several differences in clinical presentation. Bifrontal brain injury, bilateral enucleation, affective indifference (anosodiaphoria), generalized anosognosia, and the conviction that vision will resume mark clear clinical differences with Anton syndrome. Differentiating these findings from Anton syndrome will help occupational therapists, neuropsychologists, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, and physicians when assessing frontal lobe brain injury with total and partial visual loss. This case demonstrates that visual anosognosia and confabulations can occur without occipital lobe dysfunction or cortical blindness.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated the effect of parent-of-origin on retinoblastoma penetrance. The purpose of the current study was to assess differences in clinical presentation of paternally versus maternally inherited retinoblastoma. METHODS: The clinical records of all children with familial retinoblastoma treated on a tertiary Ocular Oncology Service between December 1975 and May 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: A total of 179 patients with familial retinoblastoma were included. Paternal inheritance (PI) was identified in 109 (61%) patients and maternal inheritance (MI) in 70 patients (39%). A comparison (PI vs MI) revealed PI patients were older at presentation (57.2 vs 24.4 months [P = 0.002]) with no difference in patient sex (53% females vs 57% males [P = 0.606]) or number of family members affected (3.2 vs 3.0 family members [P = 0.255]). PI patients had more advanced classification according to the International Classification of Retinoblastoma (ICRB) (group E: 31% vs 8% [P = 0.012)] and greater largest tumor in basal diameter (9.0 vs 6.2 mm [P = 0.040]) and thickness (5.6 vs 4.0 mm [P = 0.038]); they were also less likely to be located in the macula (40% vs 60% [P = 0.004]). There was no difference in tumor laterality (69% vs 64% bilaterality [P = 0.530]). PI patients required enucleation more frequently (34% vs 14% [P = 0.007]). There was no difference in need for plaque radiotherapy (P = 0.86) or chemotherapy (P = 0.85). One PI patient developed metastatic retinoblastoma, and there were no retinoblastoma-related deaths. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with paternally inherited retinoblastoma presented at an older age, with larger, more peripheral tumors and more advanced ICRB group, and were more likely to require enucleation compared to those with maternally inherited retinoblastoma.

PURPOSE: To explore whether varying degrees of vitreous haemorrhage (VH) and calcification act as risk factors for enucleation in patients with advanced retinoblastoma (RB). METHODS: Advanced RB was defined by the international classification of RB (Philadelphia version). Basic information for retinoblastoma patients diagnosed as groups D and E in our hospital between January 2017 and June 2022 was reviewed by logistics regression models. Additionally, a correlation analysis was performed, excluding variables with a VIF (variance inflation factor) >10 from the multivariate analysis. RESULTS: A total of 223 eyes diagnosed with RB were included in assessing VH and calcification; of these, 101 (45.3%) eyes experienced VH, and 182 (76.2%) eyes were found to have calcification within the tumour through computed tomography (CT) or B-scan ultrasonography. Ninety-two eyes (41.3%) were enucleated, of which 67 (72.8%) had VH and 68 (73.9%) calcification, both of which were significantly relevant to enucleation (p < 0.001*). Other clinical risk factors, such as corneal edema, anterior chamber haemorrhage, high intraocular pressure during treatment and iris neovascularization, correlated significantly with enucleation (p < 0.001*). Multivariate analysis included IIRC (intraocular international retinoblastoma classification), VH, calcification and high intraocular pressure during treatment as independent risk factors for enucleation. CONCLUSIONS: Despite identifying different potential risk factors for RB, there remains significant controversy concerning which patients require enucleation, and the degree of VH varies. Such eyes need to be evaluated carefully, and management with appropriate adjuvant therapy may improve the outcome of these patients.

PURPOSE: To evaluate socket outcomes of enucleation for uveal melanoma. METHODS: This study was a retrospective chart review conducted in December 2022 of all patients who underwent enucleation surgery for uveal melanoma between 2010 and 2015 in the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, to evaluate socket outcomes including completion of revision surgery, type of surgery, and completion of multiple revision surgeries, and potential associations. RESULTS: Between June 2010 and December 2015, 72 patients underwent enucleation for uveal melanoma in the ocular oncology service, including 25 females and 47 males, mean age 65, range 11-91 years old. There were 68 primary enucleations and 4 secondary enucleations. Complete follow-up data was available for mean 4 years, range 1-11 years. Fourteen patients underwent further surgery, including one exenteration for local recurrence. Oculoplastic surgery (n = 6, 8%), implant exposure repair (n = 3, 6%), and orbit volume expanding surgery (n = 4, 6%) were also performed. Eight patients (11%) underwent one further surgery and five patients (7%) underwent a series of procedures. There was a significant association with younger age at enucleation (age <65) with undergoing further surgery (p = 0.03, Fisher's Exact Test (FET)), and also an association of younger age with undergoing multiple further surgeries (p = 0.02, FET). There was no association found with other predictor variables, including primary versus secondary enucleation status. Most patients (75%) with PESS underwent more than one surgery. CONCLUSION: Post enucleation surgery 82% of patients did not undergo further surgery, but younger patients were more likely to undergo anophthalmic socket revision or oculoplastic surgery. Management of post enucleation socket syndrome was challenging and usually involved a series of procedures.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the addition of dexmedetomidine (BLD) to retrobulbar blockade with combined lignocaine and bupivacaine on nociception. ANIMALS: A total of 17 eyes from 15 dogs. METHODS: Prospective, randomized, masked clinical comparison study. Dogs undergoing unilateral enucleation were randomly assigned into two groups; a retrobulbar administration of lignocaine and bupivacaine in a 1:2 volume ratio combined with either BLD or 0.9% saline (BLS). The total volume of the intraconal injection was calculated at 0.1 mL/cm cranial length. Intraoperative parameters were recorded: heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2 ) arterial blood pressure (BP), and inspired isoflurane concentration (ISOinsp). Pain scores, heart rate and RR were recorded postoperatively. RESULTS: Dogs receiving BLD (n = 8) had significantly lower intraoperative RR (p = 0.007), and significantly lower ISOinsp (p = 0.037) than dogs in the BLS group (n = 9). Postoperatively heart rate was significantly lower in the BLD group at 1 min (p = 0.025) and 1 h (p = 0.022). There were no other significant differences in intraoperative or postoperative parameters, or in postoperative pain scores (p = 0.354). Dogs receiving BLD had a higher rate of anesthetic events of bradycardia and hypertension (p = 0.027). Analgesic rescue was not needed in either group. CONCLUSIONS: The addition of BLD to retrobulbar anesthesia did not result in a detectable difference in pain scores relative to blockade with lignocaine and bupivacaine alone. Dogs receiving retrobulbar BLD had a significantly lower intraoperative RR and isoflurane requirement and an increased incidence of intraoperative bradycardia and hypertension.

PURPOSE: Enucleation is a common treatment modality performed for pediatric retinoblastoma patients, and the resultant defects are reconstructed using an ocular prosthesis. The prostheses are modified or replaced periodically, as the child develops due to orbital growth and patient-error. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the replacement frequency of prostheses in the pediatric oncologic population. METHODS: A retrospective review was completed by the two senior research investigators, of patients that had ocular prostheses fabricated following enucleation of their retinoblastoma from 2005 to 2019 (n = 90). Data collected from the medical records of the patient included the pathology, date of surgery, date of prosthesis delivery, and the replacement schedule of the ocular prosthesis. RESULTS: During the 15-year study period, 78 enucleated observations (ocular prosthesis fabricated) were included for analysis. The median age of the patients at the time of delivery of their first ocular prosthesis was calculated to be 2.6 years (range 0.3-18 years). The median time to the first modification of the prosthesis was calculated to be 6 months. The time to modification of the ocular prosthesis was further stratified by age. CONCLUSION: Pediatric patients require modification of their ocular prostheses throughout their growth and development period. Ocular prostheses are reliable prostheses with predictable outcomes. This data is helpful to set an expectation among the patient, parent, and provider.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical presentation and treatment outcomes of children who received a diagnosis of retinoblastoma in 2017 throughout Asia. DESIGN: Multinational, prospective study including treatment-naïve patients in Asia who received a diagnosis of retinoblastoma in 2017 and were followed up thereafter. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 2112 patients (2797 eyes) from 96 retinoblastoma treatment centers in 33 Asian countries. INTERVENTIONS: Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, enucleation, and orbital exenteration. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Enucleation and death. RESULTS: Within the cohort, 1021 patients (48%) were from South Asia (SA), 503 patients (24%) were from East Asia (EA), 310 patients (15%) were from Southeast Asia (SEA), 218 patients (10%) were from West Asia (WA), and 60 patients (3%) were from Central Asia (CA). Mean age at presentation was 27 months (median, 23 months; range, < 1-261 months). The cohort included 1195 male patients (57%) and 917 female patients (43%). The most common presenting symptoms were leukocoria (72%) and strabismus (13%). Using the American Joint Committee on Cancer Staging Manual, Eighth Edition, classification, tumors were staged as cT1 (n = 441 [16%]), cT2 (n = 951 [34%]), cT3 (n = 1136 [41%]), cT4 (n = 267 [10%]), N1 (n = 48 [2%]), and M1 (n = 129 [6%]) at presentation. Retinoblastoma was treated with intravenous chemotherapy in 1450 eyes (52%) and 857 eyes (31%) underwent primary enucleation. Three-year Kaplan-Meier estimates for enucleation and death were 33% and 13% for CA, 18% and 4% for EA, 27% and 15% for SA, 32% and 22% for SEA, and 20% and 11% for WA (P < 0.0001 and P < 0.0001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: At the conclusion of this study, significant heterogeneity was found in treatment outcomes of retinoblastoma among the regions of Asia. East Asia displayed better outcomes with higher rates of globe and life salvage, whereas Southeast Asia showed poorer outcomes compared with the rest of Asia. BackgroundThis study determined to probe the potential association between somatic copy number alteration (SCNA) in retinoblastoma (RB) aqueous humour (AH) and pathological high-risk factors, clinical features and previous chemotherapy history. METHODS: Single-centre retrospective cohort study from including 58 AH samples collected from 58 patients diagnosed. Among them, 41 samples were collected after enucleation and 17 samples were collected before intravitreal chemotherapy. SCNAs were accessed by conducting shallow whole-genome sequencing in cell-free (cf) DNA of AH. HRs and ORs were applied to measure risk factors. RESULTS: Canonical RB SCNAs including 1q gain (87%), 2p gain (50%), 6p gain (76%), 16q loss (69%) were frequently detected. Non-classical RB SCNAs in AH including 17q gain (53%), 19q loss (43%), 7q gain (35%) were also commonly observed. 19q loss was significantly more common in patients with cT3c or worse stage than others (p=0.034). 2p gain(p=0.001) and 7q gain(p=0.001) were both more common in patients with primary enucleation than those with previous chemotherapy. Interestingly, both 2p gain (HR=1.933, p=0.027) and 7q gain (HR=2.394, p=0.005) might predict enucleation. Correlation analysis with pathological features among enucleated eyes showed that 19q loss can predict a higher risk for both massive choroid invasion (OR=4.909, p=0.038) and postlaminar optic nerve invasion (OR=4.250, p=0.043). DISCUSSION: Sequencing of AH cfDNA in RB can provide sufficient in vivo information. 19q loss was a potential signature of advanced cases clinically and pathologically.Repeated sampling from eyes receiving sequential chemotherapy should be conducted to evaluate fluctuation of SCNA in future study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate long-term outcomes of staged volume rehabilitation for acquired anophthalmos. METHODS: Case-note review of patients who had preceding i) eye removal without implant, ii) eye removal with an intraconal implant, but ball-related problems, or iii) removal of exposed implant. Secondary interventions were a) a first-time ball implant, b) dermis-fat graft, c) ball repositioning, d) ball replacement after prior removal, or e) orbital floor implantation. RESULTS: Secondary volume-augmenting surgery was performed in 175 sockets at a mean age of 42.7 years (range 2-91), with 62% secondary ball implants, 3% dermis-fat grafts, 6% ball repositioning, 19% ball replacement after prior removal for exposure, and 10% having orbital floor implantation. After this surgery, further volume enhancement was required in 21% of sockets, this being 40% for spheres ≤18 mm diameter, in contrast to 6% for those ≥20 mm ( p < 0.001). Exposure or malposition of the secondary implant occurred in 8% (12/151) and was unrelated to implant type, size, wrapping, or prior irradiation. Tertiary surgery addressed lining deficiency (18%) or eyelid malposition (25%). Overall, 92/175 (53%) had tertiary surgery to improve cosmesis and comfort, with 49% (36/92) being related to small implants. At a mean follow-up of 9.1 years, 82% of sockets had adequate volume, 79% had excellent lining, and 93% were comfortable. Prosthetic fit was satisfactory in 96% of cases, and 97% reported improved cosmesis. CONCLUSION: Over half of the sockets having planned 2-stage volume enhancement may need further procedures, especially after small-volume secondary implants, but, with meticulous surgery, reasonable long-term results can be achieved with few complications.

PURPOSE: To describe a unique case of a fatal self-enucleation and review previously published cases. METHODS: The authors describe a unique case of a complete unilateral self-enucleation while under the influence of drugs, which resulted in severe intracranial hemorrhages, right internal carotid artery opacification, and death. A literature review was performed by searching articles published before January 2023 in the Pubmed/MEDLINE database using the keywords "auto-enucleation or self-enucleation." Cases of self-inflicted damage to the globe without severing any connections were excluded. RESULTS: A literature review identified a total of 54 articles and 75 patients who had self-enucleated at least one globe completely (84.0%). Their average age was 37 years and 50.7% were male. At the time of auto-enucleation, 64.0% of these patients had known psychiatric disorders, and 28.0% were found to be under the influence of illicit drugs or alcohol. Auto-enucleation resulted in intracranial complications in 26.7% of cases. There has been 1 prior case, which, like the authors' case, resulted in death due to intracranial complications. However, this occurred in a patient who partially enucleated one eye after a self-inflicted injury to the fellow eye. The current case is unique as these complications resulted from a complete unilateral auto-enucleation. CONCLUSIONS: The severity of this case's presentation and outcome highlights the importance of prompt neuroimaging and a thorough assessment. Prompt psychiatric assessment and treatment are also required.

Background: Retinoblastoma is curable in industrialized countries. However, it is associated with mortality in resource-poor nations due to disparities and poor access to eye care. Aim was to determine the relationships between patient-related factors and clinical outcomes of Retinoblastoma management in a tertiary hospital in Nigeria. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective study of all children who were diagnosed and treated for Retinoblastoma from January 2017 through December 2022. Information obtained from their records included biosocioeconomic data, symptoms, lag time from initial symptoms, staging, treatment and outcome (dead or alive). Results: Fifty-three patients, aged 6 to 88 months on first hospital presentation were recruited. There were 29(54.7%) females and 20(37.7%) patients died. Parental low socioeconomic class, rural residence and poor nutrition occurred more in those that survived, though not significantly (p>0.05). Median(interquartile) age at diagnosis [24(18-36) months, p=0.005] and lag time [13(6-20) months, p=0.274] were low in the survived group. Bilateral Retinoblastoma (20.8%,p=0.002), brain metastasis (22.6%,p<0.001), IRSS IV (18.9%,p=0.01) and relapse (34%,p<0.001) occurred more among the patients that died. The overall survival (OS) was 22(11.77-32.23) months with 1-year OS of 63%. Treatment with only chemotherapy [HR 4.76(95%CI:1.726-13.128)], incomplete chemotherapy [HR 5.61(95%CI:1.271-24.741)], relapse [HR 5.98(95%CI:1.376-25.983)] and eye surgery after 3 chemotherapy cycles [HR 8.22(95%CI:1.087-62.239)] were predictors of mortality. Conclusion: Early presentation of retinoblastoma especially of advanced and bilateral disease may lead to improved survival if chemotherapy and eye surgery are appropriately performed. Routine screening and immediate referral of retinoblastoma particularly in rural areas are recommended.
