Pesticide micropollutants like 4-chlorophenol (4CP) and E. coli bacteria represent a substantial hazard, impacting both the environment and human health. This study delves into the effectiveness of Ag-doped TiO2 (Ag@TiO2) in removing both 4CP and E. coli. Ag@TiO2 has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in removing 4CP under both solar and visible light conditions, earning degradation efficiencies of 91.3% and 72.8%, respectively. Additionally, it demonstrates outstanding photodegradation efficiency for 4CP (98.8%) at an initial concentration of 1 mg L-1. Moreover, Ag@TiO2 exhibited substantially higher removal performance for 4CP (81.6%) compared to TiO2 (27.6%) in wastewater. Analysis of the radicals present during the photodegradation process revealed that ·O2- primarily drives the decomposition of 4CP, with h+ and ·OH also playing significant roles in the oxidation reactions of the pollutant. Interestingly, even under dark conditions, Ag@TiO2 exhibited the capability to eliminate approximately 20% of E. coli, a percentage that increased to over 96% under solar light. In addition, the prospects for environmental and health impacts of utilizing Ag@TiO2 for pesticide micropollutant removal and bacteria were discussed.

Recent decades have seen a shortage of water, which has led scientists to concentrate on solar desalination technologies. The present study examines the solar water desalination system with inclined steps, while considering various phase change materials (PCMs). The findings suggest that the incorporation of PCM generally enhances the productivity of the solar desalination system. Additionally, the combination of nanoparticles has been used to PCM, which is a popular technique utilized nowadays to improve the efficiency of these systems. The current investigation involves the transient modeling of a solar water desalination system, utilizing energy conservation equations. The equations were solved using the Runge-Kutta technique of the ODE23s order. The temperatures of the salt water, the absorbent plate of the glass cover, and the PCM were calculated at each time. Without a phase changer, the rate at which fresh water is produced is around 5.15 kg/m2·h. The corresponding mass flow rates of paraffin, n-PCM I, n-PCM III, n-PCM II, and stearic acid are 22.9, 28.9, 5.9, 11.9, and 73 kg/m2·h. PCMs, with the exception of stearic acid, exhibit similar energy efficiency up to an ambient temperature of around 29°. However, at temperatures over 29°, n-PCM II outperforms other PCM.

The present study aimed at exploring whether sunlight exposure might account for the relative difference in COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality between tropical and non-tropical countries. A retrospective observational study was designed and data from the World Health Organization weekly COVID-19 epidemiological update was compiled. We examined the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases per 100 000 population, as well as the total number of COVID-19-related mortalities per 100 000 population. Solar variables data were obtained from the Global Solar Atlas website (https://globalsolaratlas.info/). These data were analyzed to determine the association of sunlight exposure to COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality in tropical and non-tropical countries. Results revealed a statistically significant decrease in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases per 100 000 population (P<0.001), as well as the number of COVID-19-related mortalities per 100 000 population (P<0.001) between tropical and non-tropical countries. Analyses of sunlight exposure data found that specific photovoltaic power output, global horizontal irradiation, diffuse horizontal irradiation and global tilted irradiation at optimum angle were significantly inversely correlated to COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality. This suggests that stronger sunlight exposure potentially leads to lower COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality. Findings from this study suggest that the relatively low COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality in tropical countries were possibly due to better sunlight exposure that translates into adequate vitamin D status.

This study introduces an innovative LED-IoT photoreactor, representing a significant advancement in response to the demand for sustainable water purification. The integration of LED-IoT installations addresses the challenge of intermittent sunlight availability, employing LEDs with a spectrum mimicking natural sunlight. Passive Infra-Red (PIR) sensors and Internet of things (IoT) technology ensure consistent radiation intensity, with the LED deactivating in ample sunlight and activating in its absence. Utilizing a visible light-absorbing photocatalyst developed through sol-gel synthesis and mild-temperature calcination, this research demonstrates a remarkable carbamazepine removal efficiency exceeding 95% under LED-IoT system illumination, compared to less than 90% efficiency with sunlight alone, within a 6-h exposure period. Moreover, the designed photocatalytic system achieves over 60% mineralization of carbamazepine after 12 h. Notably, the photocatalyst demonstrated excellent stability with no performance loss during five further cycles. Furthermore, integration with renewable energy sources facilitated continuous operation beyond daylight hours, enhancing the system's applicability in real-world water treatment scenarios. A notable application of the LED-IoT system at an operating sewage treatment plant showed nearly 80% efficiency in carbamazepine removal from sewage in the secondary settling tank after 6 h of irradiation, coupled with nearly 40% mineralization efficiency. Additionally, physicochemical analyses such as XPS and STA-FTIR confirm that the carbamazepine photooxidation process does not affect the surface of the photocatalyst, showing no adsorption for degradation products.

The antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) undergoes direct phototransformation by sunlight, constituting a notable dissipation process in the environment. SMX exists in both neutral and anionic forms, depending on the pH conditions. To discern the direct photodegradation of SMX at various pH levels and differentiate it from other transformation processes, we conducted phototransformation of SMX under simulated sunlight at pH 7 and 3, employing both transformation product (TP) and compound-specific stable isotope analyses. At pH 7, the primary TPs were sulfanilic acid and 3A5MI, followed by sulfanilamide and (5-methylisoxazol-3-yl)-sulfamate, whereas at pH 3, a photoisomer was the dominant product, followed by sulfanilic acid and 3A5MI. Isotope fractionation patterns revealed normal 13C, 34S, and inverse 15N isotope fractionation, which exhibited significant differences between pH 7 and 3. This indicates a pH-dependent transformation process in SMX direct phototransformation. The hydrogen isotopic composition of SMX remained stable during direct phototransformation at both pH levels. Moreover, there was no variation observed in 33S between the two pH levels, indicating that the 33S mass-independent process remains unaffected by changes in pH. The analysis of main TPs and single-element isotopic fractionation suggests varying combinations of bond cleavages at different pH values, resulting in distinct patterns of isotopic fractionation. Conversely, dual-element isotope values at different pH levels did not significantly differ, indicating cleavage of several bonds in parallel. Hence, prudent interpretation of dual-element isotope analysis in these systems is warranted. These findings highlight the potential of multielement compound-specific isotope analysis in characterizing pH-dependent direct phototransformation of SMX, thereby facilitating the evaluation of its natural attenuation through sunlight photolysis in the environment.

BACKGROUND: Photoprotection is the first measure in the prevention and treatment of the deleterious effects that sunlight can cause on the skin. It is well known that prolonged exposure to solar radiation leads to acute and chronic complications, such as erythema, accelerated skin aging, proinflammatory and procarcinogenic effects, and eye damage, among others. METHODS: A better understanding of the molecules that can protect against ultraviolet radiation and their effects will lead to improvements in skin health. RESULTS: Most of these effects of the sunlight are modulated by oxidative stress and proinflammatory mechanisms, therefore, the supplementation of substances that can regulate and neutralize reactive oxygen species would be beneficial for skin protection. Current evidence indicates that systemic photoprotection should be used as an adjunctive measure to topical photoprotection. CONCLUSION: Oral photoprotectors are a promising option in improving protection against damage induced by UVR, as they contain active ingredients that increase the antioxidant effects of the body, complementing other photoprotection measures. We present a review of oral photoprotectors and their effects.

Iron (hydr)oxides are abundant in surface environment, and actively participate in the transformation of organic pollutants due to their large specific surface areas and redox activity. This work investigated the transformation of tetracycline (TC) in the presence of three common iron (hydr)oxides, hematite (Hem), goethite (Goe), and ferrihydrite (Fh), under simulated sunlight irradiation. These iron (hydr)oxides exhibited photoactivity and facilitated the transformation of TC with the initial phototransformation rates decreasing in the order of: Hem > Fh > Goe. The linear correlation between TC removal efficiency and the yield of HO• suggests that HO• dominated TC transformation. The HO• was produced by UV-induced decomposition of self-generated H2O2 and surface Fe2+-triggered photo-Fenton reaction. The experimental results indicate that the generation of HO• was controlled by H2O2, while surface Fe2+ was in excess. Sunlight-driven H2O2 production in the presence of the highly crystalline Hem and Goe occurred through a one-step two-electron reduction pathway, while the process was contributed by both O2-induced Fe2+ oxidation and direct reduction of O2 by electrons on the conduction band in the presence of the poorly crystalline Fh. These findings demonstrate that sunlight may significantly accelerate the degradation of organic pollutants in the presence of iron (hydr)oxides.

A paucity of vitamin D is a common deficiency globally, with implications for many aspects of health besides the well-known impact on musculoskeletal health. The two sources of vitamin D are through oral intake, or through endogenous synthesis in the skin when exposed to ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. Assessing nutritional needs, whether by food, food fortification or supplementation, is aided by an understanding of local potential for cutaneous synthesis of the vitamin, dependent on latitude and climate, personal skin type and local culture. To aid these discussions we provide indicative exposure times for the maintenance of vitamin D status as a function of latitude, month and skin type, for the clear-sky case and all-sky conditions, for an ambulatory person wearing modest skirt/shorts and T-shirt. At latitudes greater than ±40 degrees, lack of available sunlight limits vitamin D synthesis in some months for all, while at the equator exposure times range from 3 to 15 min at noontime, for white and black skin, respectively. Rather than a sun exposure prescription, the data are intended to show where nutritional vitamin D intake is necessary, advisable, or can be mitigated by sun exposure, and allows for such advice to be personalized to account for different sub-groups in a multicultural population.

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been used since its discovery to characterize vegetation photosynthesis and is an effective tool for monitoring vegetation dynamics. Its response to meteorological drought enhances our comprehension of the ecological consequences and adaptive mechanisms of plants facing water scarcity, informing more efficient resource management and efforts in mitigating climate change. This study investigates the spatial and temporal patterns of SIF and examines how vegetation SIF in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) responds to meteorological drought. The findings reveal a gradual southeast-to-northwest decline in SIF across the Yellow River Basin, with an overall increase-from 0.1083 W m-2µm-1sr-1 in 2001 to 0.1468 W m-2µm-1sr-1 in 2019. Approximately 96% of the YRB manifests an upward SIF trend, with 75% of these areas reaching statistical significance. The Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) at a time scale of 4 months (The SPEI-4), based on the Liang-Kleeman information flow method, is identified as the most suitable drought index, adeptly characterizing the causal relationship influencing SIF variations. As drought intensified, the SPEI-4 index markedly deviated from the baseline, resulting in a decrease in SIF values to their lowest value; subsequently, as drought lessened, it gravitated towards the baseline, and SIF values began to gradually increase, eventually recovering to near their annual maximum. The key finding is that the variability of SIF with SPEI is relatively pronounced in the early growing season, with forests demonstrating superior resilience compared to grasslands and croplands. The responsiveness of vegetation SIF to SPEI can facilitate the establishment of effective drought early warning systems and promote the rational planning of water resources, thereby mitigating the impacts of climate change.

This article reports the results of an ecological study of cancer incidence rates by state in the US for the period 2016-2020. The goals of this study were to determine the extent to which solar UVB doses reduced cancer risk compared to findings reported in 2006 for cancer mortality rates for the periods 1950-1969 and 1970-1794 as well as cancer incidence rates for the period 1998-2002 and to determine which factors were recently associated with cancer risk. The cancer data for non-Hispanic white (European American) men and women were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Indices were obtained for solar UVB at the surface for July 1992, and alcohol consumption, diabetes, and obesity prevalence near the 2016-2020 period. Lung cancer incidence rates were also used in the analyses as a surrogate for smoking, diet, and air pollution. The cancers for which solar UVB is significantly associated with reduced incidence are bladder, brain (males), breast, corpus uteri, esophageal, gastric, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, pancreatic, and renal cancer. Lung cancer was significantly associated with colorectal, laryngeal, and renal cancer. Diabetes was also significantly associated with breast, liver, and lung cancer. Obesity prevalence was significantly associated with breast, colorectal, and renal cancer. Alcohol consumption was associated with bladder and esophageal cancer. Thus, diet has become a very important driver of cancer incidence rates. The role of solar UVB in reducing the risk of cancer has been reduced due to people spending less time outdoors, wearing sunscreen that blocks UVB but not UVA radiation, and population increases in terms of overweight and obese individuals, which are associated with lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations and the generation of systemic inflammation, which is a risk factor for cancer. A dietary approach that would reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity, lung cancer, and, therefore, cancer, would be one based mostly on whole plants and restrictions on red and processed meats and ultraprocessed foods. Solar UVB exposure for a few minutes before applying sunscreen and taking vitamin D supplements would also help reduce the risk of cancer.

Dyschromia is a top diagnosis among African Americans (AA). Sunscreen is an essential part of its management, but AA have low sunscreen use. We sought to examine the perception of sunscreen utility in dyschromia and photoaging among patients who identify as AA or Black. This cross-sectional study recruited participants from the Case Western Reserve University Academic Dental Clinic. Participants completed an electronic survey that contained questions related to sunscreen use, knowledge of the sun's role in hyperpigmentation and photoaging, and whether sunscreen could be used for hyperpigmentation and photoaging. Of the 151 participants recruited, 63.6% (n = 96) were women and 36.4% (n = 57) were men. Consistent with previous reports, participants had lower sunscreen use (20.5%) than whites (43.5%). The majority of participants (80.1% and 58.3%, respectively) didn't attribute the sun to hyperpigmentation or photoaging. Participants with dark/brown spots were significantly more likely to not attribute the sun to hyperpigmentation than those without spots. (p = 0.003) Limitations for this study include its small sample size, recall and reporter bias, question misinterpretation, and lack of question neutrality. This study highlights the knowledge gap of a major contributing factor to dyschromia which in turn could be leading to their view of the decreased utility of sunscreen.

Aeromonas hydrophila can be a substantial concern, as it causes various diseases in aquaculture. An effective and green method for inhibiting A. hydrophila is urgently required. Emodin, a naturally occurring anthraquinone compound, was exploited as a photo-antimicrobial agent against A. hydrophila. At the minimum inhibitory concentration of emodin (256 mg/L) to inactivate A. hydrophilia in 30 min, an 11.32% survival rate was observed under 45 W white compact fluorescent light irradiation. In addition, the antibacterial activity under natural sunlight (0.78%) indicated its potential for practical application. Morphological observations demonstrated that the cell walls and membranes of A. hydrophila were susceptible to damage by emodin when exposed to light irradiation. More importantly, the photoinactivation of A. hydrophila was predominantly attributed to the hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals produced by emodin, according to the trapping experiment and electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Finally, a light-dependent reactive oxygen species punching mechanism of emodin to photoinactivate A. hydrophila was proposed. This study highlights the potential use of emodin in sunlight-mediated applications for bacterial control, thereby providing new possibilities for the use of Chinese herbal medicine in aquatic diseases prevention.

In recent years, there has been an observed increase in the frequency of cutaneous carcinoma, which correlates with sun exposure. This study aims to explore the variances of tumor characteristics and immune response markers among patients diagnosed with cutaneous squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) and basosquamous-cell carcinoma (BSC) with varying levels of sun exposure. The objective is to elucidate the potential influence of sun exposure on tumor progression and immune response in these types of carcinomas. We conducted a retrospective observational study that included 132 patients diagnosed with SCC and BSC. Participants were separated into high- and low-sun exposure groups. Tumor characteristics and immune response markers, including lymphocyte percentage (LY%), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), were assessed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Our findings revealed the interplay between sun exposure, inflammation, aging, and immune response. In 80% of cases, it was found that individuals had high sun exposure throughout their lifetime. Patients in the high sun exposure category had a significantly higher LY% than those with low sun exposure (24.22 ± 7.64 vs. 20.71 ± 8.10, p = 0.041). Also, the NLR was lower in patients with high sun exposure (3.08 ± 1.47 vs. 3.94 ± 2.43, p = 0.023). Regarding inflammatory markers, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), LY%, NLR, and LMR showed significant differences between the two groups. Patients who were diagnosed with SCC had higher ESR values (p = 0.041), higher LY% (p = 0.037), higher NLR (p = 0.041), and lower LMR (p = 0.025). This study provides evidence supporting distinct tumor characteristics and immune response patterns in patients diagnosed with SCC and BSC with a high sun exposure history. These findings imply that sun exposure may contribute to tumor progression and influence the immune response in individuals with SCC and BSC.

INTRODUCTION: Reunion Island, a French overseas department, is located in the southern hemisphere, close to the Capricorn tropic. This island has a multicultural and multiethnic population of 860 000 inhabitants, a quarter of whom are at high risk of developing skin cancer due to intense ultraviolet radiation. Melanoma is responsible for the majority of skin cancer deaths. The early prevention of melanoma is based on sun protection in childhood, but French regulations are not adapted to the environmental conditions of this tropical region.The main objective of our study is to evaluate the effectiveness of three sun protection programs conducted in Reunionese primary schools through a pupil knowledge questionnaire. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: PRESOLRE is an interventional, open-label, cluster-randomised controlled trial, in four parallel arms, that is being conducted throughout 2022-2023 on Reunion Island. The trial design assumes an escalation interventional effect using: first, a control arm without proposed intervention (arm 1); second, an arm whose classes are encouraged to use the validated educational programme 'Living With the Sun' (LWS) (arm 2); third, an arm whose classes are encouraged to use both 'LWS' combined with 'Mission Soleil Réunion's sun protection awareness programme (arm 3); fourth, an arm benefiting from an intervention similar to arm 3, combined with the distribution of hats, sunglasses and sun creams (arm 4). In all, 1780 pupils from 18 classes of 20 pupils, on average, will be included. Randomisation applies to the classes of pupils (so defined as clusters). The primary outcome is based on the proportion of correct answers to the knowledge questions after the awareness programme, compared between the four arms using a linear mixed model with random intercept. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study obtained ethics approval in 2022 (ID: 2022-A00350-43). Results will be published in peer-reviewed journals. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT05367180.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding sun exposure and sun protection among the population of Kazakhstan. METHOD: A cross sectional study was conducted by administering an online questionnaire via social networking sites to residents of Kazakhstan. The questionnaire was designed to determine demographic information as well as knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding sun exposure and sun protection. RESULT: The responses of 249 participants were analysed.  Descriptive tests, bivariate analyses, and multiple linear regression were used to statistically analyse the data. The mean age of the participants was 31.7 ± 11.5 (SD) years. Most participants were of Kazakh nationality (88.7%), female (71.0 %), urban residents (93.9 %), and possessed higher education degrees (88.0 %). The level of knowledge and attitudes were found to be moderate amongst the population whilst practices were determined to be low.  Knowledge (p=0.002), attitudes (p=0.002), female gender (p=0.002), and having children educated in school about sun safety (p=0.018) were significantly associated with improved sun-protective practices. CONCLUSION: This study has demonstrated low adoption of sun protective practices in the Kazakhstan population, despite the identification of certain characteristics associated with higher rates of practice.

Exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation and use of UV-emitting tanning devices are known risk factors for skin cancer. Few studies have explored the interaction between these risk factors, namely how the risk of skin cancer increases among those who both have been exposed to high levels of natural sunlight and regularly use tanning beds. Nurses' Health Study II followed 116,430 women, aged 25-42, from 1991 to 2011. Cumulative average UV exposure was based on participants' residences at follow-up periods. History of severe sunburn during ages 15-20 was used as a proxy for early-life sunlight exposure. Tanning bed use in early life data was collected. Participants reported melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) diagnoses. We built multivariable Cox regression models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for risk of skin cancer associated with joint effects of sunlight exposure and tanning bed use. Participants with high sunlight exposure and tanning bed use during high school/college had an increased risk of BCC (HR = 1.53, 95% CI 1.37-1.71, Pinteraction=0.01; vs. low sun exposure and no tanning bed use). Participants with a history of severe sunburns and tanning bed use during high school/college were at increased risk of BCC (HR = 1.62, 95% CI 1.47-1.79, Pinteraction=0.02; vs. no sunburns and no tanning bed use). No significant interactions were found between sunlight exposure and tanning bed use on SCC and melanoma risk. We found significant interactions between sunlight exposure and tanning bed use on the risk of BCC.

A direct flow evacuated tube solar dryer (DF_ETSD), a novel drying system, was used for drying pre-treated okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). The performance of DF_ETSD was analysed by determining thermal profiling, dryer and collector efficiency hourly. The maximum 3-day average ambient temperature, collector outlet temperature and solar radiation were 35.6 °C, 66.4 °C and 976 W m-2 respectively. The collector efficiency increased as solar radiation increased over time due to a higher temperature difference between the collector outlet and ambient temperature. The maximum collector and dryer efficiency observed were 30.19% and 21.47%, respectively. A pre-treatment of okra was done in hot water at 70, 80 and 90 °C for 5 min. Okra samples were dried from an initial moisture content of 87.42 ± 1.49% (wb) to a final value of 10.77 ± 1.03% (wb) in 9 h. The pre-treatment temperature of 80 °C is suitable for maximum drying rate, colour retention and rehydration ratio and minimum water activity, which signifies the longer shelf-life of okra. Midilli and Kucuk model was best fitted (highest R2, lowest χ2 and RMSE) for the control and samples pre-treated at 80 °C; however, Verma model was suitably fitted for the sample pre-treated at 70 and 90 °C. The payback period of DF_ETSD was found to be 1.27 years. Environmental analysis shows the CO2 emission and net CO2 mitigation ranged between 1.24 and 18.65 t and 9.86 and 154.05 t respectively for different selected lifecycles of the dryer. Due to its environmental sustainability and low payback period, the presented drying system is recommended for okra and other fruits and vegetables.
