RESUMEN

Neuroendocrine tumors are uncommon in the gastrointestinal system but can develop in the majority of the body's epithelial organs. Our goal was to examine the presence and clinical application of serum dopamine (DA), serotonin (ST), norepinephrine (NE), and epinephrine (EPI), in addition to determining the significance of the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS), and systemic inflammatory response (SIR) markers as a prognostic factor for patients with colorectal neuroendocrine tumors (CR-NETs), in various tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stages. We also wanted to identify the possible connection between them. This study included 25 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with CR-NETs and a control group consisting of 60 patients with newly diagnosed colorectal cancer (CRC). We used the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) technique. This study revealed that CR-NET patients showed significantly higher serum levels of DA compared to CRC patients. We showed that serum DA was present in the early stages of CR-NETs, with increasing levels as we advanced through the TNM stages. Moreover, we found a close relationship between the levels of DA and the inflammation and nutritional status of the CR-NET patients in this study. CR-NET patients from the PNI < 47.00 subgroup had a higher level of DA than those from the PNI ≥ 47.00 subgroup. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed correlations between DA, PNI, and the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR). Both hematological indices were negatively correlated with albumin (ALB). Our investigation's findings relating to the PNI, GPS, SIR, and DA indicate that these tools can be markers of nutritional and systemic inflammatory status, are simple to use, and are repeatable. Further research on this topic could provide valuable insights into which biomarkers to incorporate into clinical practice for the management of CR-NET patients.

INTRODUCTION: Abnormal results in common blood tests may occur several months before lung cancer (LC) and colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis. Identifying early blood markers of cancer and distinct blood test signatures could support earlier diagnosis in general practice. METHODS: Using linked Australian primary care and hospital cancer registry data, we conducted a cohort study of 855 LC and 399 CRC patients diagnosed between 2001 and 2021. Requests and results from general practice blood tests (six acute phase reactants [APR] and six red blood cell indices [RBCI]) were examined in the 2 years before cancer diagnosis. Poisson regression models were used to estimate monthly incidence rates and examine pre-diagnostic trends in blood test use and abnormal results prior to cancer diagnosis, comparing patterns in LC and CRC patients. RESULTS: General practice blood test requests increase from 7 months before CRC and 6 months before LC diagnosis. Abnormalities in many APR and RBCI tests increase several months before cancer diagnosis, often occur prior to or in the absence of anaemia (in 51% of CRC and 81% of LC patients with abnormalities), and are different in LC and CRC patients. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates an increase in diagnostic activity in Australian general practice several months before LC and CRC diagnosis, indicating potential opportunities for earlier diagnosis. It identifies blood test abnormalities and distinct signatures that are early markers of LC and CRC. If combined with other pre-diagnostic information, these blood tests have potential to support GPs in prioritising patients for cancer investigation of different sites to expedite diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the clinical value of serum CEA levels and their implications on the diagnostic value of the conventional TNM staging system in the oldest-old patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: The recruited subjects were colorectal cancer patients aged 85 and older. The cutoff value for normal CEA level is 5 ng/mL. Patients with elevated CEA levels were categorized as stage C1, and those with normal CEA levels as stage C0. A number of Cox proportional hazard regression models were established to evaluate the prognosis of different prognostic factors with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The Kaplan-Meier method was utilized to display the disparate prognostic impact of multiple clinicopathological factors with the log-rank test. RESULTS: A total of 17,359 oldest-old patients diagnosed with CRC were recruited from the SEER database. The conditional survival of oldest-old patients with CRC was dismal with a 1-year conditional survival of only 11%, 18%, and 30% for patients surviving 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively. Patients with stage C1 exhibited a 48.5% increased risk of CRC-specific mortality compared with stage C0 (HR = 1.485, 95%CI = 1.393-1.583, using stage C0 patients as the reference, P < 0.001). All the stage C0 patients indicated lower HRs relative to the corresponding stage C1 patients. CONCLUSIONS: Dismal conditional survival of oldest-old patients with CRC should be given additional consideration. C stage influences the prognosis of oldest-old patients with CRC.

Insofar as they play an important role in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer (CRC), this study analyzes the serum profile of cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and soluble receptors in patients with CRC and cancer-free controls as possible CRC signatures. Serum levels of 65 analytes were measured in patients with CRC and age- and sex-matched cancer-free controls using the ProcartaPlex Human Immune Monitoring 65-Plex Panel. Of the 65 tested analytes, 8 cytokines (CSF-3, IFN-γ, IL-12p70, IL-18, IL-20, MIF, TNF-α and TSLP), 8 chemokines (fractalkine, MIP-1ß, BLC, Eotaxin-1, Eotaxin-2, IP-10, MIP-1a, MIP-3a), 2 growth factors (FGF-2, MMP-1), and 4 soluble receptors (APRIL, CD30, TNFRII, and TWEAK), were differentially expressed in CRC. ROC analysis confirmed the high association of TNF-α, BLC, Eotaxin-1, APRIL, and Tweak with AUC > 0.70, suggesting theranostic application. The expression of IFN-γ, IL-18, MIF, BLC, Eotaxin-1, Eotaxin-2, IP-10, and MMP1 was lower in metastatic compared to non-metastatic CRC; only AUC of MIF and MIP-1ß were > 0.7. Moreover, MDC, IL-7, MIF, IL-21, and TNF-α are positively associated with tolerance to CRC chemotherapy (CT) (AUC > 0.7), whereas IL-31, Fractalkine, Eotaxin-1, and Eotaxin-2 were positively associated with resistance to CT. TNF-α, BLC, Eotaxin-1, APRIL, and Tweak may be used as first-line early detection of CRC. The variable levels of MIF and MIP-1ß between metastatic and non-metastatic cases assign prognostic nature to these factors in CRC progression. Regarding tolerance to CT, MDC, IL-7, MIF, IL-21, and TNF-α are key when down-regulated or resistant to treatment is observed.

Background: This study evaluates the predictive value of preoperative inflammatory markers (NLR, PLR, APRI, SII) and liver function tests in determining the risk of fistula development postcolorectal cancer surgery. The objective was to determine the association between elevated marker levels and fistula risk and establish thresholds for preoperative risk stratification. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at the "Pius Brinzeu" Clinical Emergency Hospital from 2018 to 2023, analyzing data from 219 patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. Results: Among the markers studied, the Systemic Inflammation Index (SII) with a cutoff 460.5 showed the highest sensitivity (75.6%) and specificity (71.3%), resulting in an AUC of 0.774 (p=0.001). Albumin levels 2.9 g/dL also significantly predicted fistula occurrence with 77.3% sensitivity and 73.8% specificity (AUC 0.788, p 0.001). Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) and Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) presented cutoffs of 3.95 and 191.6 respectively, demonstrating substantial predictive value with AUCs of 0.732 and 0.746 (p 0.001 and p=0.001, respectively). Conclusions: Elevated levels of specific preoperative inflammatory markers and liver function tests are significantly associated with the risk of developing fistulas in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. These findings support the integration of these biomarkers into preoperative evaluations to enhance patient risk stratification and optimize surgical outcomes, providing a valuable tool for clinical decision-making in colorectal surgery settings.

Aim: Blood-based biomarkers have shown promise for diagnosing colorectal cancer (CRC) and adenomas (CRA). This review summarizes recent studies in this area. Methods: A literature search was undertaken for 01/01/2017-01/03/2023. Criteria included CRC, CRA, liquid-biopsy, blood-based tests and diagnosis. Results: 12,378 studies were reduced to 178 for data extraction. Sixty focused on proteomics, 53 on RNA species, 30 on cfDNA methylation, seven on antigens and autoantibodies and 28 on novel techniques. 169 case control and nine cohort studies. Number of participants ranged 100-54,297, mean age 58.26. CRC sensitivity and specificity ranged 9.10-100% and 20.40-100%, respectively. CRA sensitivity and specificity ranged 8.00-95.70% and 4.00-97.00%, respectively. Conclusion: Sensitive and specific blood-based tests exist for CRC and CRA. However, studies demonstrate heterogenous techniques and reporting quality. Further work should concentrate on validation and meta-analyzes.

In solid tumor oncology, circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is poised to transform care through accurate assessment of minimal residual disease (MRD) and therapeutic response monitoring. To overcome the sparsity of ctDNA fragments in low tumor fraction (TF) settings and increase MRD sensitivity, we previously leveraged genome-wide mutational integration through plasma whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Here we now introduce MRD-EDGE, a machine-learning-guided WGS ctDNA single-nucleotide variant (SNV) and copy-number variant (CNV) detection platform designed to increase signal enrichment. MRD-EDGESNV uses deep learning and a ctDNA-specific feature space to increase SNV signal-to-noise enrichment in WGS by ~300× compared to previous WGS error suppression. MRD-EDGECNV also reduces the degree of aneuploidy needed for ultrasensitive CNV detection through WGS from 1 Gb to 200 Mb, vastly expanding its applicability within solid tumors. We harness the improved performance to identify MRD following surgery in multiple cancer types, track changes in TF in response to neoadjuvant immunotherapy in lung cancer and demonstrate ctDNA shedding in precancerous colorectal adenomas. Finally, the radical signal-to-noise enrichment in MRD-EDGESNV enables plasma-only (non-tumor-informed) disease monitoring in advanced melanoma and lung cancer, yielding clinically informative TF monitoring for patients on immune-checkpoint inhibition.

Metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) presents significant challenges in clinical management due to its heterogeneity and variable response to treatment. In this study, we conducted comprehensive small RNA (sRNA) sequencing analyses to identify sRNA biomarkers associated with survival and treatment response in mCRC patients. We measured serum sRNAs before and after chemotherapy treatment in a discovery cohort of 189 mCRC patients. Our analysis revealed 25 microRNAs (miRNA) as significantly associated with overall survival at baseline. We found that 11 of the 25 significant miRNAs were also significant in an independent validation cohort of 20 mCRC patients, including the top five miRNAs from the discovery cohort. Importantly, all but four of the 25 significant miRNAs from the discovery cohort had hazard ratios in the same direction in the validation cohort. Among the 25 significant miRNAs, we identified the miR-320 family of miRNAs as the strongest independent prognostic marker, with high baseline levels correlating with poor survival outcomes. Furthermore, post-treatment levels of the same miRNAs were even more predictive of overall survival, emphasizing the prognostic value of serum changes in miRNA levels before and after treatment. Moreover, we observed significant changes in serum miRNAs and other sRNAs when comparing samples before and after chemotherapy, with distinct expression patterns between responders and non-responders. Leveraging these differential expression patterns, we established a serum sRNA signature that accurately predicts response to chemotherapy with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.8. In summary, our study highlights the prognostic and predictive potential of sRNA biomarkers in mCRC, offering valuable insights into patient stratification and personalized treatment approaches.

Background: Abnormal lipid levels have been associated with cancer incidence and progression. However, limited studies have investigated the relationship between apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I) and colorectal cancer (CRC). This study assessed the significance of ApoA-I levels in progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of patients with CRC. Methods: Survival curves were compared using Kaplan-Meier analysis, while the predictive values of various lipid indicators in CRC prognosis were evaluated based on receiver operating characteristic curves. The factors influencing PFS and OS in patients with CRC were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Finally, the relationship between ApoA-I level and disease recurrence was investigated through logistic regression analysis. The optimal Apo-I level was determined through maximally selected rank statistics. Results: Using the optimal ApoA-I cutoff value (0.9 g/L), the 1,270 patients with CRC were categorized into low (< 0.9 g/L, 275 cases) and high (≥0.9 g/L, 995 cases) ApoA-I groups. Compared with other lipid indicators, ApoA-I demonstrated superior predictive accuracy. The high ApoA-I group exhibited significantly higher survival rates than the low ApoA-I group (PFS, 64.8% vs. 45.2%, P < 0.001; OS, 66.1% vs. 48.6%, P < 0.001). Each one-standard-deviation increase in ApoA-I level was related to a 12.0% decrease in PFS risk (hazard ratio [HR] 0.880; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.801-0.968; P = 0.009) and an 11.2% decrease in OS risk (HR 0.888; 95%CI, 0.806-0.978; P = 0.015). Logistic regression analysis revealed that patients with low ApoA-I had a 32.5% increased risk of disease recurrence (odds ratio [OR] 0.675; 95%CI, 0.481-0.946; P = 0.0225) compared with those with high ApoA-I. PFS/OS nomograms based on ApoA-I demonstrated excellent prognostic prediction accuracy. Conclusions: Serum ApoA-I level may be a valuable and non-invasive tool for predicting PFS and OS in patients with CRC.

Timely accurate and cost-efficient detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) is of great clinical importance. This study aims to establish prediction models for detecting CRC using plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) fragmentomic features. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed on cfDNA from 620 participants, including healthy individuals, patients with benign colorectal diseases and CRC patients. Using WGS data, three machine learning methods were compared to build prediction models for the stratification of CRC patients. The optimal model to discriminate CRC patients of all stages from healthy individuals achieved a sensitivity of 92.31% and a specificity of 91.14%, while the model to separate early-stage CRC patients (stage 0-II) from healthy individuals achieved a sensitivity of 88.8% and a specificity of 96.2%. Additionally, the cfDNA fragmentation profiles reflected disease-specific genomic alterations in CRC. Overall, this study suggests that cfDNA fragmentation profiles may potentially become a noninvasive approach for the detection and stratification of CRC.

BACKGROUND: The role of novel circular RNAs (circRNAs) in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains to be determined. This study aimed to identify a novel circRNA involved in CRC pathogenesis, assess its diagnostic value, and construct a regulatory network. METHODS: Differential expression analysis was conducted using circRNA datasets to screen for differentially expressed circRNAs. The expression of selected circRNAs was validated in external datasets and clinical samples. Diagnostic value of plasma circRNA levels in CRC was assessed. A competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network was constructed for the circRNA using TCGA dataset. RESULTS: Analysis of datasets revealed that hsa_circ_101303 was significantly overexpressed in CRC tissues compared to normal tissues. The upregulation of hsa_circ_101303 in CRC tissues was further confirmed through the GSE138589 dataset and clinical samples. High expression of hsa_circ_101303 was associated with advanced N stage, M stage, and tumor stage in CRC. Plasma levels of hsa_circ_101303 were markedly elevated in CRC patients and exhibited moderate diagnostic ability for CRC (AUC = 0.738). The host gene of hsa_circ_101303 was also found to be related to the TNM stage of CRC. Nine miRNAs were identified as target miRNAs for hsa_circ_101303, and 27 genes were identified as targets of these miRNAs. Subsequently, a ceRNA network for hsa_circ_101303 was constructed to illustrate the interactions between the nine miRNAs and 27 genes. CONCLUSIONS: The study identifies hsa_circ_101303 as a highly expressed circRNA in CRC, which is associated with the progression of the disease. Plasma levels of hsa_circ_101303 show promising diagnostic potential for CRC. The ceRNA network for hsa_circ_101303 provides valuable insights into the regulatory mechanisms underlying CRC.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Classical serum cancer biomarkers, such as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9), remain important tools in colorectal cancer (CRC) management for disease follow up. However, their sensitivity and specificity are low for diagnostic and prognostic evaluation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of biomarkers reflecting biological activity of tumors - tissue polypeptide specific antigen (TPS), cytokeratin fragment 19 (CYFRA 21-1), thymidine kinase (TK), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGF-BP3) - together with the CEA and CA 19-9 in CRC diagnosis and prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study including 148 CRC patients and 68 age-matched healthy subjects. Serum biomarkers were measured in pre-operative serum samples using immunoanalytical methods. The end-point for the diagnostic evaluation was the area under the receiving operating characteristic curve (AUC ROC) of the biomarkers. The end-point for the prognostic evaluation was overall survival. RESULTS: Serum levels of CEA, CA 19-9, TPS, and TK were significantly increased in CRC early-stage patients compared with healthy controls. Each of the studied biomarkers had AUC between 0.6 and 0.7. Analysis of survival demonstrated that the patients with CEA, CA 19-9, cytokeratin, and TK above optimal cut offs had significantly shorter survival. A multivariate analysis performed on all the study biomarkers resulted in the selection of CYFRA 21-1 as the best performing biomarker with hazard ratio 10.413. CONCLUSION: The combination of cytokeratins and thymidine kinase with classical cancer biomarkers enables the prediction of tumor aggressiveness and long-term prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the existence of numerous studies investigating the diagnostic potential of blood microRNAs for colorectal cancer, the microRNAs under consideration vary widely, and comparative analysis of their diagnostic value is lacking. Consequently, this systematic review aims to identify the most effective microRNA blood tumor markers to enhance clinical decision-making in colorectal cancer screening. METHOD: A comprehensive search of databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane, was conducted to identify case‒control or cohort studies that examined the diagnostic value of peripheral blood microRNAs in colorectal cancer. Studies were included if they provided sensitivity and specificity data, were published in English and were available between January 1, 2000, and February 10, 2023. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist was employed for quality assessment. A Bayesian network meta-analysis was performed to estimate combined risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), with results presented via rankograms. This study is registered with the International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols (INPLASY), 202,380,092. RESULTS: From an initial pool of 2254 records, 79 met the inclusion criteria, encompassing a total of 90 microRNAs. The seven most frequently studied microRNAs (43 records) were selected for inclusion, all of which demonstrated moderate to high quality. miR-23, miR-92, and miR-21 exhibited the highest sensitivity and accuracy, outperforming traditional tumor markers CA19-9 and CEA in terms of RR values and 95% CI for both sensitivity and accuracy. With the exception of miR-17, no significant difference was observed between each microRNA and CA19-9 and CEA in terms of specificity. CONCLUSIONS: Among the most extensively researched blood microRNAs, miR-23, miR-92, and miR-21 demonstrated superior diagnostic value for colorectal cancer due to their exceptional sensitivity and accuracy. This systematic review and network meta-analysis may serve as a valuable reference for the clinical selection of microRNAs as tumor biomarkers.

Background and Objective: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is among the most common types of cancer. Although the disease is treatable in its early stages, five-year survival falls below 20% in the later stages. CEA and CA19-9 are tumor markers used in the diagnosis and follow-up of the disease in clinical practice; however, their diagnostic effectiveness is insufficient. Therefore, the identification of biomarkers that can be easily studied from serum and can diagnose CRC and determine its severity is highly important. In this context, dickkopf1 (DKK1) and cytoskeleton-associated protein 4 (CKAP4) are both promising biomarkers. Materials and Methods: Serum DKK1 and CKAP4 levels were measured in 55 patients with CRC and 40 healthy controls. The patients with CRC were divided into groups based on pathological stages and histological differentiation. The serum levels of both proteins in patients with CRC were measured preoperatively and 10 and 30 days postoperatively. Results: Serum DKK1 and CKAP4 were significantly higher in the CRC group than in the healthy controls (p < 0.05). Serum levels of both proteins rose in line with the disease stage and grade but decreased following surgical resection. A positive correlation was observed between tumor diameter and protein blood levels. The diagnostic efficacy of DKK1 and CKAP4 in CRC (approximately 95%) was higher than that of markers such as CEA and CA19-9. Conclusions: The DKK1 and CKAP4 serum values of patients with CRC are promising biomarkers. They can potentially be used in CRC management, namely, in the diagnosis and treatment of tumor response access and in tumor aggressiveness prediction.

Metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) currently lacks reliable biomarkers for precision medicine, particularly for chemotherapy-based treatments. This study examines the behavior of 11 CXC chemokines in the blood of 104 mCRC patients undergoing first-line oxaliplatin-based treatment to pinpoint predictive and prognostic markers. Serum samples were collected before treatment, at response evaluation (EVAR), and at disease progression or last follow-up. Chemokines were assessed in all samples using a Luminex® custom panel. CXCL13 levels increased at EVAR in responders, while in non-responders it decreased. Increasing levels of CXCL13 at EVAR, independently correlated with improved progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Nanostring® analysis in primary tumor samples showed CXCL13 gene expression's positive correlation not only with gene profiles related to an immunogenic tumor microenvironment, increased B cells and T cells (mainly CD8+) but also with extended OS. In silico analysis using RNAseq data from liver metastases treated or not with neoadjuvant oxaliplatin-based combinations, and deconvolution analysis using the MCP-counter algorithm, confirmed CXCL13 gene expression's association with increased immune infiltration, improved OS, and Tertiary Lymphoid Structures (TLSs) gene signatures, especially in neoadjuvant-treated patients. CXCL13 analysis in serum from 36 oxaliplatin-treated patients from the METIMMOX study control arm, reported similar findings. In conclusion, the increase of CXCL13 levels in peripheral blood and its association with the formation of TLSs within the metastatic lesions, emerges as a potential biomarker indicative of the therapeutic efficacy in mCRC patients undergoing oxaliplatin-based treatment.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant public health issue owing to its widespread occurrence and substantial morbidity and mortality rates. Recent studies have highlighted serum uric acid (SUA) level as a probable risk factor for CRC; however, the inconsistency in these findings has created doubt. We performed a Mendelian randomization (MR) study utilizing extensive cohort data from the UK BioBank and the NHGRI-EBI Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) Catalog to investigate the causal connection between SUA levels and CRC incidence. Our MR study addresses the constraints of earlier studies, including limited sample sizes and inconsistent results. Considering SUA levels as the exposure and CRC as the outcome, the inverse variance-weighted (IVW) approach in MR showed that the odds ratios (ORs) for CRC for each unit increase in SUA were 0.232 (95% confidence interval [CI] of OR 0.094-0.570; P = .001) and 0.551 (95% CI of OR 0.325-0.934; P = .027). Pleiotropic tests and sensitivity analysis confirmed minimal horizontal pleiotropy and the robustness of causality. Our research deepens the understanding of the association between SUA levels and CRC, offering insights into prevention strategies and patient outcomes prediction.

BACKGROUND: Secreted Frizzled-Related Protein 5 (SFRP5) modulates Wnt signalling pathways, affecting diverse biological processes. We assessed the diagnostic and prognostic value of circulating SFRP5 (cSFRP5) in colorectal cancer (CRC) METHODS: Plasma cSFRP5 concentrations were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in healthy donors (n = 133), individuals diagnosed with CRC (n = 449), colorectal polyps (n = 85), and medical conditions in other organs including cancer, inflammation, and benign states (n = 64). RESULTS: Patients with CRC, polyps, and other conditions showed higher cSFRP5 levels than healthy individuals (p < 0.0001). Receiver operating characteristic curves comparing healthy donors with medical conditions, polyps and CRC were 0.814 (p < 0.0001), 0.763 (p < 0.0001) and 0.762 (p < 0.0001), respectively. In CRC, cSFRP5 correlated with patient age (p < 0.0001), tumour stage (p < 0.0001), and histological differentiation (p = 0.0273). Levels, adjusted for patient age, sex, plasma age and collection institution, peaked in stage II versus I (p < 0.0001), III (p = 0.0002) and IV (p < 0.0001), were lowest in stage I versus III (p = 0.0002) and IV (p = 0.0413), with no difference between stage III and IV. Elevated cSFRP5 levels predicted longer overall survival in stages II-III CRC (univariate: HR 1.82, 95% CI: 1.02-3.26, p = 0.024; multivariable: HR 2.34, 95% CI: 1.12-4.88, p = 0.015). CONCLUSION: This study confirms cSFRP5 levels are elevated in CRC compared to healthy control and reveals a correlation between elevated cSFRP5 and overall survival in stages II-III disease.
