RESUMEN

In this "plastic era" with the increased use of plastic in day today's life the accumulation of its degraded products like microplastics or plastic additives such as Bisphenol A(BPA) is also increasing. BPA is an endocrine-disrupting chemical used as a plasticizing agent in clear plastic, building materials, coatings, and epoxy resin. Several enzymes including laccases and lipases have been studied for the reduction of BPA toxicity. Over the decades of encountering these toxicants, microorganisms have evolved to degrade different classes of plastic additives. Since the degradation of BPA is a long process thus meta-omics approaches have been employed to identify the active microbiota and microbial dynamics involved in the mitigation of BPA. It is also necessary to investigate the impact of processing activities on transit of BPA in food items and to limit its entrance in food world. This review summarizes a comprehensive overview on BPA sources, toxicity, bio-based mitigation approaches along with a deeper understanding of multi-omics approaches for its reduction and risk analysis. Knowledge gaps and opportunities have been comprehensively compiled that would aid the state-of-the-art information in the available literature for the researchers to further address this issue.

RESUMEN

This clinical report presents the rehabilitation of extensive hard and soft tissue defects caused by rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis as a result of untreated diabetes mellitus. The patient underwent subtotal maxillectomy and was rehabilitated with an implant-supported maxillofacial prosthesis with zygomatic and pterygoid implants by following an immediate loading protocol.

RESUMEN

This study focuses on the development of a scalable method for producing poly(3-hydroxypropionate), a homopolymer with significant physico-mechanical properties, through the use of metabolically-engineered Escherichia coli K12 (MG1655) and externally supplied 3-hydroxypropionate. The polymer synthesis pathway was established and optimized through synthetic biology techniques, including the effects of overexpressing phasin and cell division proteins. The optimized strain achieved unprecedented production titers of 9.5 g/L in flask cultures and 80 g/L in fed-batch bioreactors within 45 h. The analysis of poly(3-hydroxypropionate) polymer properties revealed it possesses excellent elasticity (Young's modulus < 6 MPa) and tensile strength (∼80 MPa), positioning it within the category of elastomers or flexible plastics. These findings suggest a viable path for the sustainable, large-scale production of the poly(3-hydroxypropionate) biopolymer.

RESUMEN

The recent upsurge in the studies on micro/nano plastics and antimicrobial resistance genes has proven their deleterious effects on the environmental and human health. Till-date, there is a scarcity of studies on the interactions of these two factors and their combined influence. The interaction of microplastics has led to the formation of new plastics namely plastiglomerates, pyroplastics. and anthropoquinas. It has long been ignored that the occurrence of microplastics has become a breeding ground for the emergence of antimicrobial resistance genes. Evidently microplastics are also associated with the occurrence of other pollutants such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons and pesticides. The increased use of antibiotics (after Covid breakout) has further elevated the detrimental effects on human health. Therefore, this study highlights the relation of microplastics with antibiotic resistance generation. The factors such as uncontrolled use of antibiotics and negligent plastic consumption has been evaluated. Furthermore, the future research prospective was provided that can be helpful in correctly identifying the seriousness of the environmental occurrence of these pollutants.

Rationale: This paper presents the treatment of noninfected hypertrophic, horse hoof nonunion edentulous mandible accompanied with a Luhr class fracture. Patient Concerns: The patient reported with complaints of pain and an unstable lower denture at the right side of the lower jaw post mandibular fracture. Diagnosis: Upon inspection and post cone-beam computed tomography, it was determined that it was a case of a noninfected hypertrophic, horse hoof nonunion edentulous mandible with Luhr class 1 fracture. Treatment: The clinicians in this study treated the fracture with single-piece corticobasal jaw implants successfully with 10 BECES® corticobasal single-piece jaw implants in the maxilla by engaging double pterygoids bilaterally and eight implants in the mandible. Outcomes: After two years, complete unification of the fracture line and callus adaptation was observed on a panoramic radiograph. Take-away Lessons: The authors propose a new treatment option for the correction of nonunion mandibular fracture.

(1) Background: Dental implantology has been rapidly developing over the last decades. The introduction of new materials, surface modifications and implant designs has brought the need to rethink and systematize our knowledge regarding dental implants. Thus, the aim of this paper is to introduce a new classification and implant positioning indications that can be used to maximize the survival rate and the aesthetic outcome of single-piece compressive screw implants. (2) Materials and methods: This classification was based on a multicenter clinical and radiological observation of 151 patients, in whom 1057 implants were placed with a success rate of 98.5% (1041). The follow-up period was up to 82 months with a mean of 22.34 months. (3) Results: it seems that, in the case of single-piece implants, diameter and length of the implant have influence on their survival rate, whereas smoking and hypertension do not. (4) Conclusions: this paper provides clinicians with comprehensive information about the rationale, criteria and implementation of the new classifications based on a large number of implants and long-term observations.

RESUMEN

Food is an essential commodity for the survival of any form of life on earth. Yet generation of plethora of food waste has significantly elevated the global concern for food scarcity, human and environment deterioration. Also, increasing use of polymers derived from petroleum hydrocarbons has elevated the concerns towards the depletion of this non-renewable resource. In this review, the use of waste food for the production of bio-polymers and their associated challenges has been thoroughly investigated using scientometric analysis. Various categories of food waste including fruit, vegetable, and oily waste can be employed for the production of different biopolymers including polyhydroxyalkanoates, starch, cellulose, collagen and others. The advances in the production of biopolymers through chemical, microbial or enzymatic process that increases the acceptability of these biopolymers has been reviewed. The comprehensive compiled information may assist researchers for addressing and solving the issues pertaining to food wastage and fossil fuel depletion.

RESUMEN

Oligosaccharides are the sugars made up of 3-10 saccharides units and one of the classes of prebiotics obtained from various biowastes. These biowastes could include rice straw, husk, spent coffee grounds, sugarcane bagasse, spent tea leaves, fruits and vegetables peel, corn stalk, corn stover, deoiled meals and brewer's spent grains etc., which can be used as a resource for oligosaccharides production. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the suitability of different biowaste resources for oligosaccharide production followed by critical analysis of the recent updates and production methods. The review also discusses the tremendous prebiotic potential of oligosaccharides in food applications with prospects for further advancements in the field.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The aim of this article is to report the long-term outcome of full mouth rehabilitation with single piece, smooth surface implants following immediate loading protocol on a patient suffering with RA and severe unilateral condylar resorption. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present a challenging case of a patient suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis who was stabilized and completed successfully with a 4 year follow-up period. Prosthetic management optimized the inter-occlusal relationship to maintain both function and esthetic integrity. Single piece implants are designed to engage and take support from the cortical bone low in metabolic activities thus promoting the force transmission through apical threads that are engaged in the cortical bone. DISCUSSION: Rheumatoid Arthritis [RA] is an auto-immune inflammatory condition in which the inflamed and hypertrophic synovial membrane grows into the articulation surfaces. The Temporomandibular Joints [TM] are frequently involved in rheumatoid arthritis. According to the literature on RA, due to frequent periodontitis, decreased salivary secretion, medication, as well as decrease in bone regenerative potential, RA is often considered as a relative contraindication in the use of implants. Atrophic jaws and cases with comorbidities like osteoporosis, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, periodontally infected cases are restored with high success by single piece smooth surface. CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this may be the first case of immediate functional loading by bi-cortical single piece implants.

Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate is a biopolymer which has shown tremendous potential for replacing conventional petroleum-based plastics for plummeting the plastic pollution problem. However, the production cost of PHB is high which makes it less attractive for commercial use. To tackle this challenge, various researchers suggest the search for low-cost substrates and energy efficient technologies for PHB production. In this regard, the waste generated from fruit processing industries or fruit wastes could be pre-processed and fermented for effectively generating PHB. Therefore, the aim of this review was to focus on the methods of fruit waste pre-processing and the effect of fermentation variables on PHB production using fruit waste as a substrate. The relevant research findings on the use of different microorganisms, PHB production conditions and fruit waste-based substrates are also covered. Analysis of various studies revealed that pineapple and mixed fruit waste are effective for PHB production.

Animal derived waste, if not disposed properly, could pose a threat to the environment and its inhabitants. Recent advancements in biotechnological and biomedical interventions have enabled us to bioengineer these valuable waste substrates into biomaterials with diversified applications. Rearing and processing of poultry, cattle, sheep, goat, pig, and slaughterhouse waste can aid in effective waste valorization for the fabrication of biopolymers, composites, heart valves, collagen, scaffolds, pigments and lipids, among other industrially important biomaterials. Feathers and eggshell waste from the poultry industry can be used for producing keratinous proteins and biocomposites, respectively. Cattle dung, hoofs and cattle hide can be used for producing hydroxyapatite for developing scaffolds and drug delivery systems. Porcine derived collagen can be used for developing skin grafts, while porcine urinary bladder has antiangiogenic, neurotrophic, tumor-suppressive and wound healing properties. Sheep teeth can be used for the production of low-cost hydroxyapatite while goat tissue is still underutilized and requires more in-depth investigation. However, hydrolyzed tannery fleshings show promising potential for antioxidant rich animal feed production. In this review, the recent developments in the production and application of biomaterials from animal waste have been critically analyzed. Standardized protocols for biomaterial synthesis on a pilot scale, and government policy framework for establishing an animal waste supply chain for end users seem to be lacking and require urgent attention. Moreover, circular bioeconomy concepts for animal derived biomaterial production need to be developed for creating a sustainable system.

Prosthetic rehabilitation post resection and radiotherapy demand a thorough understanding of the biomechanics of the jaw, its associated structures, and their post radiation changes at the bone level. Restoring lost structures can often pose a challenge, especially with regard to the dentition. Due to inadequate hard- and soft-tissue structures as well as their demand for "biologic osseointegration," it is difficult to conduct immediate loading as a treatment option on conventional implants. Alternatives are today available. Since piece smooth surface cortical implants transmit occlusal forces at cortical bone/buttress by engaging them, with or without reliance on the alveolar bone, it can be considered as an option. Here, we report a case of immediate loading with single-piece smooth surface implants in a male patient who had undergone a marginal mandibulectomy 3 years back for the removal of an oral squamous cell carcinoma of the retromolar trigone area that was closed by an anastomosed radial forearm flap, followed by radiation therapy. The dentition was restored successfully using a single piece smooth surface cortically anchored implant and reported favorable success and survival rate with high patient acceptance. Single piece corticobasal implant technology is one of the most predictable methods for the functional and sociopsychological correction, with minimal invasive immediate functional loading protocol restoring function and post resection surgical deformation of the jaw, thus improving lifestyle and survival.

Presenting to our knowledge, for the first time in literature, a case report on the long term follow-up of an implant retained fixed prosthesis on free fibular reconstruction with a single piece zygomatic implant and single piece bicortical implant via a flapless approach and immediate functional rehabilitation. The technique involved the concept of "Remote Bone Anchorage" in conjunction with the union of grafted free fibula flap with the native mandible. It was facilitated with a single piece zygomatic implant engaged in the mandible and splinted with single piece implants on the grafted fibula as needed for prosthetic functional reconstruction. The author has reported a unique concept of immediate functional rehabilitation in the fibular graft therefore providing additional splinting of the vascularized free fibula to the mandible by splinting them with single piece zygomatic cortical implant.

Polyhydroxybutyrates (PHBs) are a class of biopolymers produced by different microbial species and are biodegradable and biocompatible in nature as opposed to petrochemically derived plastics. PHBs have advanced applications in medical sector, packaging industries, nanotechnology and agriculture, among others. PHB is produced using various feedstocks such as glycerol, dairy wastes, agro-industrial wastes, food industry waste and sugars. Current focus on PHB research has been primarily on reducing the cost of production and, on downstream processing to isolate PHB from cells. Recent advancements to improve the productivity and quality of PHB include genetic modification of producer strain and modification of PHB by blending to develop desirable properties suited to diversified applications. Selection of feedstock plays a critical role in determining the economic feasibility and sustainability of the process. This review provides a bird's eye view of the suitability of different waste resources for producing polyhydroxybutyrate; providing state-of the art information and analysis.

This Consensus-Document is issued by the International Implant Foundation (Munich/Germany). It describes distinct methods of placement of cortico-basal oral implants in different areas of the jaw bone and the maxillo-facial skeleton. The implants utilize the method of "osseofixation" instead of "osseointegration" for achieving primary, functional stability, hence they work according to the (AO-) principles of fracture treatment. The concept of the technology allows for immediate functional loading, just as it allows for various types of loading following orthopaedic surgery. The 16 methods and sub-methods as described and displayed here have been undergoing extensive observation and testing and they have been approved by the Board of the International Implant Foundation. All Consensus Documents of the International Implant Foundation are revised every three years. This is the 3rd version of the Consensus Document on placement of corticobasal oral implants Level of Evidence: S3 (evidence based, systematically developed consensus guideline).

This article analyses published prior article regarding the questions: is the study setup correct (true) and if comparable cases are evaluated for the compared methods. Futhermore the content, the pictures, the tables, the graphs and the pictures legends of the article and statistics are analysed for truth, relevance and applicability. We investigate furthermore if this article addresses all relevant questions regarding bias, the study groups, the evaluation of the outcomes and the evaluation of patient parameters such as burden of the treatment. As a result of the analysis, we state that the analysed article is misleading and it does not provide valuable information regarding decision making for other healthcare professionals in the dental implant field.

Maxillary jaw is restricted superiorly with maxillary sinus in the posterior region and nasal cavity in the anterior region. Augmentation of distal maxilla with recessed maxillary sinus has been documented since, last few decades. Sinus lifts the procedure either through crestal or lateral approach proves to be an effective way for augmenting bone for the placement of dental implants in atrophied posterior maxilla. However, when it comes to vertically deficient anterior maxilla, lifting of the nasal membrane is not considered. Perhaps, recent studies have shown greater success of dental implant placed after augmentation of the nasal floor. This report emphasizes on an observation of significant bone formation after indirect lifting of the nasal membrane with smooth polished surface bi-cortical implants.
