RESUMEN

AIM: To evaluate the effect of sodium picosulfate/magnesium citrate (SPMC) and 3 L split-dose polyethylene glycol (PEG) with or without dimethicone on bowel preparation before colonoscopy. METHODS: In this multicenter, prospective, randomized, controlled study conducted from April 2021 to December 2021, consecutive adult patients scheduled for colonoscopy were prospectively randomized into four groups: SPMC, SPMC plus dimethicone, 3 L PEG, and 3 L PEG plus dimethicone. Primary endpoint was colon cleansing based on Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS). Secondary endpoints were bubble score, time to cecal intubation, adenoma detection rate (ADR), patient safety and compliance, and adverse events. RESULTS: We enrolled 223 and 291 patients in SPMC and 3 L PEG group, respectively. The proportion with acceptable bowel cleansing, total BBPS score and cecal intubation time were similar in all four subgroups (p > 0.05). Patient-reported acceptability and tolerability was significantly greater in SPMC than 3 L PEG group (p < 0.001); adverse events were significantly lower in SPMC than latter group (p < 0.001). ADR in both groups was greater than 30%. CONCLUSION: SPMC had significantly higher acceptability and tolerability than 3 L PEG, however, was similar in terms of bowel-cleansing effect and cecal intubation time and hence can be used before colonoscopy preparation.

RESUMEN

The leaching of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the sludge into the liquid phase is induced by ultrasound. However, there is limited investigation into the structure and molecular composition of sludge DOM in this process. The molecular structure and composition of sludge DOM in ultrasonic treatment were comprehensively elucidated in this study. The sludge dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM) image had most significant change at 15-min ultrasonic time and 1.2 W/mL ultrasonic density, respectively. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis indicated that ultrasonic treatment of sludge reduced the macromolecules to small molecules in DOM. Then, electrospray ionization Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR-MS) analysis revealed that lignin, tannins, and carbohydrates were the main components of sludge DOMs after ultrasound treatment. analysis revealed that lignin, tannins, and carbohydrates were the main components of sludge DOMs after ultrasound treatment. Furthermore, through the Van Krevelen analysis, the major components were CHO (48.50%) and CHOS (23.20%) in the DOM of ultrasonicated sludge. This research provides the basis for the practical application of ultrasonic treatment of sludge and provides basic information for DOM components.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the clinical effects of resin nanoceramic (RNC) computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) partial crowns on posterior teeth after root canal treatment over a 3-year period. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 132 posterior teeth restored with CAD/CAM partial crowns were placed in 128 patients. The observation group (n=66) was restored with RNC restorations, while the control group received lithium disilicate-based glass ceramic (LDGC) CAD restorations. Using Federation dentaire internationale (FDI) World Dental Federation clinical criteria, 2 calibrated evaluators examined the performance of the restorations at baseline, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 36 months. The Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test were adopted to analyze the survival rate. The influence of potential risk factors on the main pattern of failure was studied by univariate Cox regression analysis (alpha=0.05). RESULTS At the 3-year followup, the survival rate of the partial crowns was 83.1% in the RNC group, and 93.5% in the LDGC group (P=0.061). Failures were caused by debonding (66.7%), restoration fracture (26.6%), and tooth fracture (6.7%). No significant differences were found between the 2 materials at 36 months, except for the parameters of "surface luster" (P=0.002) and "occlusal contour and wear" (P=0.009). The RNC group was significantly more likely to debond than the LDGC group (hazard ratio=9.22 [1.17,72.74], P=0.01). CONCLUSIONS RNC CAD/CAM-fabricated partial crowns are a potential clinical alternative for endodontically treated posterior teeth, with a survival rate of 83.1% at the 3-year followup. The main pattern of failure was debonding, which might be influenced by surface pretreatment of the RNC material.

RESUMEN

The glycosylation pattern of alpha fetoprotein (AFP) paves the basis for precise early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, existing analytical methods ignore the contribution of terminal sialic acid, which has been reported to be highly connected with HCC. Besides, the development of diagnostic assays is severely hindered by the preparation of anti-glycans antibodies. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), as synthetic antibody mimics, provide unique strengths to address these issues. Herein, we report a MIPs-based dual-modal ratiometric immunoassay for precise HCC diagnosis. Using a "pit one against ten" MIP to recognize a subset of glycans containing sialic acid and/or core fucose, we demonstrated our assay exhibited improved precision as compared with ELISA. This assay provided not only a glycoform-resolved method for precise HCC diagnosis, but also a new paradigm for developing antibody mimics via molecular imprinting towards challenging biomedical applications.

RESUMEN

Global rivers act as a dominant transport pathway for land-based plastic debris to the marine environment. Organic pollutants (OPs) affiliated with riverine plastics can also enter the global oceans, but their amounts remain unknown. Microplastic (MP) samples were collected in a one-year sampling event from the surface water of the eight main riverine outlets in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China, and analyzed for OPs affiliated with MPs, including 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 14 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The mean concentrations of MP-affiliated ∑16PAH, ∑8PBDE, and ∑14PCB were 2010 (range: 25-40,100), 412 (range: 0.84-14,800), and 67.7 (range: 1.86-456) ng g-1, respectively. Based on these and previous results, the annual riverine outflows of MP-affiliated OPs were 148, 83, and 8.03 g for ∑16PAH, ∑8PBDE, and ∑14PCB, respectively. Assuming that plastic debris of different sizes contained the same concentrations of the target pollutants as MPs, the mean riverine outflows of plastic-bound ∑16PAH, ∑8PBDE, and ∑14PCB were 6.75, 3.77, and 0.37 kg year-1, respectively, which were insignificant compared with the riverine outflows of OPs through riverine water discharge (up to hundred tons per year). Apparently, plastics are an insignificant carrier of riverine OPs to the coastal oceans.

RESUMEN

In this work, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) biocomposites with regenerated cellulose-softwood pulp (RC-SP) as a green reinforcement were prepared via co-precipitation method. Simultaneous precipitation of the two components promotes uniform dispersion of the RC-SP and constructs strong molecular chain entanglements and hydrogen bonding network inside the composites. This physical cross-linking network reduces the water absorption and improves the water resistance of the composites. The incorporation of RC-SP not only improves the thermal decomposition properties of the composites, but also enhances the mechanical properties and dynamic mechanical properties, attributed to the strong interaction between the filler and the matrix. Moreover, the fabricated PVA/RC-SP composites exhibit good water-induced shape memory effect, and shape recovery rate of 10% RC-SP reinforced composite reaches 95.3% after immersing for 35 min. This work provides useful information for the implementation of co-precipitation method and the application of renewable cellulose resources.

RESUMEN

Plastic pollution has caused increasing global concern. Currently, model estimates of the riverine plastic inputs to the global oceans based on the concept of Mismanaged Plastic Waste (MPW) varied substantially, and no field measurements of riverine inputs were available. We conducted sampling at the eight major river outlets of the Pearl River Delta, South China with rapid economic growth and urbanization to provide field measured data for fine-tuning modeling results. Floating microplastics (MPs) were collected with a Manta net (mesh size of 0.33 mm) five times during 2018. Microplastic particles (0.3-5.0 mm) widely occurred in all sampling sites. The number and mass concentrations of MPs were in the ranges of 0.005-0.7 particles m-3 and 0.004-1.28 mg m-3 and were positively correlated with water discharges. The annual riverine input of MPs from the Pearl River Delta was estimated at 39 billion particles or 66 tons, which converts to 2400-3800 tons of plastic debris based on calculations described in Text S2. These values were substantially below the MPW-based model estimates (91,000-170,000 tons). The large difference between measured and modeling results may have derived from the large uncertainty in the MPW values assigned to the world's countries/regions.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The fabrication of bioactive coatings on metallic implants to enhance osseointegration has become a topic of general interest in orthopedics and dentistry. Hydroxyapatite (HA) coating has been shown to induce bone formation and promote bone-implant integration. Unfortunately, poor mechanical performance has hindered this from becoming a favorable coating material. The majority of present studies have focused in incorporating different elements into HA coatings to improve mechanical properties. In recent years, tantalum (Ta) has received increasing attention due to its excellent biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. The aim of on the present study was to investigate the fabrication and biological performance of Ta-incorporated HA coatings. METHODS: Ta-incorporated HA coatings were fabricated using the plasma spray technique on a titanium substrate, and the surface characteristics and mechanical properties were examined. In addition, the effects of Ta-incorporated HA coatings on the biological behavior of mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were investigated. RESULTS: Ta-incorporated HA coatings with microporous structure had higher roughness and wettability. In addition, the bonding strength of Ta/HA coatings with the substrate was substantially superior to HA coatings. Furthermore, Ta-incorporated HA coatings not only facilitated initial cell adhesion and faster proliferation, but also promoted the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that the incorporation of Ta could improve mechanical performance and increase the osteogenic activity of HA coatings. The Ta-incorporated HA coating fabricated by plasma spraying is expected to be a promising bio-coating material for metallic implants.

RESUMEN

Nucleos(t)ide analogues rarely result in a durable off-treatment response in chronic hepatitis B infection, whereas pegylated interferon (Peg-IFN) induces a long-lasting response only in a subset of patients. We assessed the effect of sequential combination therapy with Peg-IFN-α2a and entecavir in hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive patients with prior long-term entecavir therapy and investigated the predictors of response to treatment. HBeAg-positive individuals who did not achieve HBeAg seroconversion during previous long-term entecavir therapy, receiving Peg-IFN-α2a added to ongoing entecavir therapy (sequential combination [S-C] therapy; n = 81) for 48 weeks or remaining on entecavir monotherapy (n = 116), were retrospectively included. A matched pair was created at a 1:1 ratio from each treatment group. The primary endpoint was HBeAg seroconversion at week 48. Subgroup analysis of response prediction was conducted for 81 patients with S-C therapy. More patients in the S-C therapy group achieved HBeAg seroconversion than those in the entecavir group (44% versus 6%; P < 0.0001). An HBeAg level of <200 signal-to-cutoff ratio (S/CO) at baseline was a strong predictor for higher HBeAg seroconversion than that achieved when HBeAg was ≥200 S/CO (64.2% versus 17.9%; P < 0.0001). Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) levels at baseline and the decrease in HBsAg levels predicted HBsAg loss in the S-C therapy group. The combination of baseline HBeAg of <200 S/CO and HBsAg of <1,000 IU/ml and an HBsAg decline at week 12 of ≥0.5 log10 IU/ml provided the highest rate of HBeAg seroconversion (92.31%) and HBsAg loss (83.3%) at week 48. Patients receiving sequential combination therapy have a higher rate of HBeAg seroconversion and are more likely to experience HBsAg clearance than do those continuing entecavir monotherapy. Sequential combination therapy can be guided by baseline HBsAg/HBeAg levels and on-treatment HBsAg dynamics.

RESUMEN

The digestive physiology of Chinese loach (Paramisgurnus dabryanus) was studied by assessing the specific and total activities of different pancreatic (trypsin, chymotrypsin, amylase and lipase), gastric (pepsin) and intestinal (alkaline phosphatase and leucine-aminopeptidase) enzymes from hatching to 40 days after hatching (DAH). Larvae were reared at 24.4 ± 0.4 °C and fed with rotifers from mouth opening (4 DAH) to 15 DAH, from 10 to 35 DAH with Cladocera and from 30 to 40 DAH with compound diet. Enzyme activities for trypsin, chymotrypsin, amylase and lipase were detected before the onset of exogenous feeding, indicating that these enzymes were genetically pre-programmed. Most of the pancreatic enzyme specific activities increased until 20 DAH and decreased thereafter. The pepsin activity of Chinese loach was firstly detected at 30 DAH, indicating the appearance of functional gastric gland. Alkaline phosphatase specific activity was detected from hatching onward, showed marked increase and reached the second peak at 20 DAH, while a gradual increase in specific leucine-aminopeptidase activity was observed until the end of the experiment. Accordingly, the larvae of Chinese loach possess a functional digestive system before the onset of exogenous feeding and the digestive capacity gradually increases as development progresses. The abrupt increase in intestinal enzyme activities between 10 and 20 DAH demonstrates onset of juvenile-like digestive mode in Chinese loach larvae. The increase in pepsin activity after 30 DAH indicates the shift from alkaline to acidic digestion in Chinese loach larvae, which may be considered as the onset of weaning.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and adverse effects of dapoxetine in the treatment of premature ejaculation. METHODS: We randomly assigned outpatients with premature ejaculation in the proportion of 2:1 to receive 30 mg dapoxetine on demand (n =78) or 50 mg sertraline qd for one month (n = 39). Follow-up was accomplished in 95 cases, 63 in the dapoxetine group and 32 in the sertraline group. We recorded the intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT), clinical global impression of change (CGIC) score, and adverse reactions of the patients and compared them between the two groups. RESULTS: IELT was significantly increased in both the dapoxetine (from [0.87 ± 0.31] to [2.84 ± 0.68] min, P < 0.05) and the sertraline group (from [0.84 ± 0.28] to [2.71 ± 0.92] min, P < 0.05) after medication. Based on the CGIC scores in premature ejaculation, the rate of excellence or effectiveness was 36.5% in the dapoxetine and 37. 5% in the sertraline group, and the rate of improvement was 63.5% in the former and 71.9% in the latter. The incidence rates of dizziness, nausea, headache, and diarrhea were slightly higher (P > 0.05) while those of fatigue, somnolence, and dry mouth significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the sertraline than in the dapoxetine group. CONCLUSION: On-demand oral medication of dapoxetine is effective and well-tolerated for the treatment of premature ejaculation.

RESUMEN

A Gram-negative, poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-accumulating rod bacterium, strain GYP-2(T), was isolated from a pool of marine Spirulina platensis cultivation, Sanya, China. Growth was observed at 10-45 °C and pH 6-10 in the presence of 1-10 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the new isolate belonged to Gammaproteobacteria and displayed 93.8-95.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequences similarities to members of the genera Thalassolituus, Oleibacter, and Oceanobacter, but house-keeping gene gyrB (encode DNA gyrase beta subunit) demonstrated that the new isolate was distantly related to Thalassolituus, Oleibacter, and Oceanobacter species (only 77-83 % gene gyrB sequences similarities). The G+C content of genomic DNA was 55 mol%. The major respiratory quinone was Q-9, while that for Oceanobacter kriegii LMG 6238(T) was Q-8. Major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylethanolamine. On the basis of its physiological, chemotaxonomic, and molecular properties, strain GYP-2(T) is suggested to represent a novel species of a new genus in Gammaproteobacteria, for which the name Bacterioplanes sanyensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GYP-2(T) (=CGMCC 1.12392(T)=KCTC 32220(T)).

RESUMEN

The detection of pH and glutathione (GSH) is positively significant for the cell microenvironment imaging. Here, to assess the pH value and the concentration of GSH efficiently and visually, a cellulose-based multi-bands ratiometric fluorescence probe was designed by assembling MnO2-modified cellulose gold nanoclusters, fluorescein isothiocyanate-grafted cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and protoporphyrin IX-modified CNCs. The probe exhibits GSH-responsive, pH-sensitive and GSH/pH-independent fluorescent properties at 440 nm, 520 nm, and 633 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the probe identifies GSH within 4 s by degrading MnO2 into Mn2+ in response to GSH. Ingeniously, the green fluorescence of the probe at 520 nm was decreased with pH, and the red fluorescence at 633 nm remained stable. Therefore, the probe displayed distinguishing fluorescence colors from pink to blue and from green to blue for the synchronous detection of pH and GSH concentration within 4 s. The design strategy provides insights to construct multi-bands fluorescence probes for the rapid detection of multiple target analytes.

RESUMEN

The development of double encryption system enables information to switch reversibly between "False" and "True", which helps to ensure information security in the transmission process. Herein, a biomimetic cellulose nanofibre-based double information encryption sensor (CNF-DIES) with an excellent pH response and fluorescence colour-switching performance was prepared with fluorescein isothiocyanate and protoporphyrin IX modified acetylated cellulose nanofibres (ACNF) as the pH response switch and background, respectively. Interestingly, with the addition of cellulose, CNF-DIES can be regarded as both a dye and an ink binder, which can realize direct writing function. The fluorescein grafted to ACNF guaranteed the stability of writing and avoided the "coffee ring" phenomenon. The handwriting written by CNF-DIES processes excellent light/pH double encryption performance. Besides, the film prepared by CNF-DIES can realize high resolution fingerprint imaging. This work demonstrated a strategy for pH-responsive colour-tunable materials for sensors and double information encryption.

RESUMEN

The rapid loss of drugs and the weak curative effects due to cyclical urination are the main reasons why wound heal with difficulty after bladder tumour resection. Here, a bioinspired cellulose nanofibre (CNF)-based magnetic 3D nanonetwork wound dressing with excellent tissue adhesion and biocompatibility is designed by the assembly of pH- and near infrared-responsive CNF nanoskeletons, magnetic switching Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and temperature switching Pluronic®F-127. The dressing with high loading capacity for mitomycin and indocyanine green can form a sticky 3D nanonetwork at the wound site and remain for a long time to release drugs through an external magnetic field. Interestingly, the dressing possessed excellent antibacterial activity, bacterial biofilm elimination, T24 tumour cell killing, and wound healing promotion through photothermal, photodynamic, and chemotherapy. Therefore, it has promising application for bladder postoperative infected wound healing to avoid rapid loss of drugs due to cyclical urination.

RESUMEN

Effective clinical practice of precise photodynamic therapy (PDT) is severely impeded by the inherent drawbacks and aggregation propensity of conventional photosensitizers. An all-in-one approach is highly desired to optimize structural features, photophysical properties, and pharmacokinetic behaviors of photosensitizers. Herein, we have fabricated mesoporous boron dipyrromethene-bridged coordination polymer nanophotosensitizers (BCP-NPs) for high-performance PDT via a unique solvent-assisted assembly strategy. Distinctive photophysical and structural characteristics of BCP-NPs confer enhanced photodynamic activities, together with high cellular uptake and ultrahigh stability. Moreover, BCP-NPs showed excellent tumor accumulation and prolonged tumor retention, achieving eradication of the triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) model under low-power-density LED irradiation. This work has provided a valuable paradigm for the construction of mesoporous photoactive nanomaterials for biophotonic applications.

RESUMEN

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified (DLBCL-NOS) is a subtype of large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma with various clinical and pathological manifestations. DLBCL-NOS which primarily arises from maxillary sinus is rare and hard to diagnose due to unique anatomy. Here, we present a case of DLBCL-NOS that developed in the left maxillary sinus of a 72-year-old male, who presented with severe toothache that resembled acute pulpitis. The lesion was diagnosed and treated based on radiographs, histological, immunohistological examinations, and PET-CT analysis. Despite its rare incidence, DLBCL-NOS should still be included in differential diagnoses to rule out malignancy in cases of endodontic disease.

RESUMEN

Postoperative infected wound complications caused by residual tumor cells, bacterial biofilms, and drug-resistant bacteria have become the main challenge in postsurgical skin regeneration. Herein, a bionic cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-based in situ intelligent wound dressing with near-infrared (NIR)-, temperature-, and pH-responsive functions was designed by using NIR-responsive CNC as the network skeleton, dynamic imine bonds between dialdehyde cellulose nanocrystals and doxorubicin, chitosan oligosaccharide as the pH-responsive switch, and temperature-sensitive poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) as the temperature-responsive in situ formation switch. The as-prepared wound dressing with the intertwining three-dimensional (3D) network structure possessed high drug loadability of indocyanine green (30 mg/g) and doxorubicin (420 mg/g) simultaneously. The temperature-, NIR-, and pH-responsive switches endowed the wound dressing with controllable on-demand drug release behavior. In particular, the temperature switch endowed the dressing with a shape-adaptable ability on irregularly infected wounds. Interestingly, the wound dressing showed excellent antitumor activity for A375 tumor cells, antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and bacterial biofilm removal ability. Therefore, the developed wound dressing can provide an ideal synergistic treatment strategy combined with chemotherapy and photodynamic and photothermal therapy for postoperative drug-resistant bacteria-infected wound healing.

RESUMEN

In situ hydrogels with rapid hemostasis and antibacterial activity have received considerable attention in the field of wound healing. Herein, a white light and NIR dual light-responsive cellulose nanofibril (CNF)-based in situ hydrogel wound dressing is tailored by using white light-responsive CNF and endogenous antibacterial CNF as the skeleton, Prussian blue nanoparticles, Pluronic® F127 and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose as the NIR, temperature-responsive switch and binder, respectively. The dressing exhibits rapid hemostasis properties in rat liver injury model with low blood loss of 286.4 mg and short hemostasis time of 63 s. Meanwhile, the antibacterial activity of the dressing with white and NIR irradiation against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is higher than 99.9 %. Interestingly, the dressing with biocompatibility can promote MRSA infection wound healing and can be removed on demand without secondary injury to skin. Therefore, it has promising applications for first-aid hemostasis and wound healing.

RESUMEN

Tumor recurrence and drug-resistant bacterial infection are the main reasons that wounds heal with difficulty after skin tumor treatment. The near infrared- (NIR-) and pH-responsive, bionic, cellulose nanofiber-based (CNF-based) nanocage wound dressing with biocompatibility, bioviscosity, and shape adaptability is designed for dual NIR-triggered photothermal therapy of tumor and infection-induced wound healing. The wound dressing with the intertwining three dimensional (3D) nanocage network structure is skillfully constructed using NIR-responsive cellulose nanofibers and pH-responsive cellulose nanofibers as the skeleton, which endows the dressing with a high drug-loading capacity of doxorubicin (400 mg·g-1), and indocyanine green (25 mg·g-1). Moreover, the NIR- and pH-responsive bionic "On/Off" switches of the dressing enable a controllable and efficient drug release onto the wound area. The dual NIR-triggered wound dressing with excellent photothermal conversion performance possesses good antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It could effectively eliminate bacterial biofilms and kill A375 tumor cells. Interestingly, the bionic wound dressing with shape adaptability could adapt and treat irregular postoperative skin tumor wounds and drug-resistant bacterial infection via the synergistic therapy of photothermal, photodynamic, and chemotherapy, which provides an ideal strategy for clinical intervention.
