RESUMEN

The interconversion between electrical and mechanical energies is pivotal to ferroelectrics to enable their applications in transducers, actuators and sensors. Ferroelectric polymers exhibit a giant electric-field-induced strain (>4.0%), markedly exceeding the actuation strain (≤1.7%) of piezoelectric ceramics and crystals. However, their normalized elastic energy densities remain orders of magnitude smaller than those of piezoelectric ceramics and crystals, severely limiting their practical applications in soft actuators. Here we report the use of electro-thermally induced ferroelectric phase transition in percolative ferroelectric polymer nanocomposites to achieve high strain performance in electric-field-driven actuation materials. We demonstrate a strain of over 8% and an output mechanical energy density of 11.3 J cm-3 at an electric field of 40 MV m-1 in the composite, outperforming the benchmark relaxor single-crystal ferroelectrics. This approach overcomes the trade-off between mechanical modulus and electro-strains in conventional piezoelectric polymer composites and opens up an avenue for high-performance ferroelectric actuators.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Aplasia of lacrimal and salivary glands (ALSG) is a syndromic disorder characterized by aplasia of lacrimal and salivary systems. Reported ophthalmic manifestations of ALSG include aplasia of lacrimal glands, punctal agenesis, lacrimal sac mucocele, and membranous congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO). Bony CNLDO, a rare clinical entity, has not been associated with any syndromic disorder. This study investigated the relationship between genetic mutations and bony CNLDO in 3 Chinese families with ALSG. DESIGN: Single-center observational case study. PARTICIPANTS: Three Chinese families with bony CNLDO, including 7 affected and 9 healthy family members. METHODS: Slit-lamp ophthalmic examination, comprehensive physical examination, orbital computed tomography (CT) imaging, cervicofacial magnetic resonance imaging, audiometry, and whole exome sequencing on periphery blood were performed. Variants were cross-referenced with 1000 control genomes and various population databases. Pathologic variants were identified using bioinformatic tools. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Clinical examination, diagnostic imaging, whole exome sequencing, and bioinformatic analysis findings. RESULTS: Affected patients showed decreased tear production on the Schimer I test and reduced tear breakup time. Bony CNLDO was observed on CT, showing unilateral or bilateral bony termination at the middle or terminal segment of the nasolacrimal canal. Magnetic resonance imaging showed aplasia or absence of lacrimal, parotid, and submandibular glands. Physical examination revealed normal ears, digits, and facial morphology. Audiometry and dental assessment were conducted on the pediatric patients and yielded normal results. The clinical characteristics of patients aligned with a diagnosis of ALSG. Genomic analysis revealed 3 novel heterozygous missense mutations of the Fgf10 gene: c.316T→C, c.327C→G, and c.332T→G. The inheritance pattern was autosomal dominant with variable penetrance. These variants were not observed in 1000 control genomes and population databases. These variant positions also were shown to be highly conserved across various animal species. Mutated genes and proteins were predicted as deleterious with most computational models, with a few suggesting they may be benign. CONCLUSIONS: Bony CNLDO was identified as a novel phenotype of ALSG implicated by missense mutations of highly conserved residues in the Fgf10 gene. These cases broadened our knowledge of Fgf10-related phenotypes and prompted clinicians to consider syndromic associations in patients with bony CNLDO. RESUMEN

Water is the lifeblood of everything on earth, nourishing and nurturing all forms of life, while also contributing to the development of civilization. However, with the rapid development of economic construction, especially the accelerated process of modern industrialization, the pollution of oily sewage is becoming increasingly serious, affecting the ecological balance and human health. The efficient elimination of pollutants in sewage is, therefore, particularly urgent. In this paper, a core-shell microbial reactor (MPFA@CNF-SA-AM) was fabricated by using nanocellulose and sodium alginate (SA) particles embedded with microorganisms as the core and lipophilic and hydrophobic fly ash as the outer shell layer. Compared with that of free microorganisms and cellulose and SA aerogel pellets loading with microorganisms (CNF-SA-AM), which has a degradation efficiency of 60.69 and 82.89%, respectively, the MPFA@CNF-SA-AM possesses a highest degradation efficiency of 90.60% within 240 h. So that this self-floating microbial reactor has selective adsorption properties to achieve oil-water separation in oily wastewater and high effective degradation of organic pollutants with low cost. The adsorption curves of MPFA@CNF-SA-AM for diesel and n-hexadecane were studied. The results showed that the adsorption follows the Freundlich model and is a multimolecular layer of physical adsorption. In addition, the degradation mechanism of diesel oil was studied by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that diesel oil was selectively adsorbed to the interior of MPFA@CNF-SA-AM, and it was degraded by enzymes in microorganisms into n-hexadecanol, n-hexadecaldehyde, and n-hexadecanoic acid in turn, and finally converted to water and carbon dioxide. Compared with existing oily wastewater treatment methods, this green and pollution-free dual-functional core-shell microbial reactor has the characteristics of easy preparation, high efficiency, flexibility, and large-scale degradation. It provides a new, effective green choice for oily wastewater purification and on-site oil spill accidents.

RESUMEN

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a neurotropic enterovirus associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) fatalities. In this study, we investigated the impact of EV71 on plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) and CD4+ T cells. The results showed that pDCs were promptly activated, secreting interferon (IFN)-α and inducing CD4+ T cell proliferation and differentiation during early EV71 infection. This initiated adaptive immune responses and promoted proinflammatory cytokine production by CD4+ T cells. Over time, viral nucleic acids and proteins were synthesized in pDCs and CD4+ T cells. Concurrently, the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) was activated, exhibiting an anti-inflammatory role. With constant viral stimulation, pDCs and CD4+ T cells showed reduced differentiation and cytokine secretion. Defects in pDCs were identified as a key factor in CD4+ T cell tolerance. CAP had a more significant regulatory effect on CD4+ T cells than on pDCs and was capable of inhibiting inflammation in these cells.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Neonates experience varying intensities of pain after surgery. While white noise has been used for postoperative pain relief in infants, its effects on neonates after surgery need further exploration. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of white noise on pain scores and salivary cortisol levels in surgical neonates. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 64 neonates scheduled for surgery were recruited and assigned by block randomization into 2 groups. The intervention group listened to white noise at 50 dB, while the control group listened to white noise at 0 dB, for 30 minutes 6 times for 48 hours postoperatively. Pain scores, measured by the COMFORTneo Scale, and salivary cortisol levels were compared. RESULTS: Although pain scores decreased after surgery in all subjects, no statistically significant difference was observed between the 2 groups (P = .937). There was a significant difference between pre- and postintervention pain scores in the intervention group only (P = .006). Salivary cortisol levels decreased after intervention in the intervention group, but there was no significant difference between pre- and postintervention levels in the 2 groups (P = .716). IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Given the reduction in pain scores and salivary cortisol concentrations after white noise intervention, white noise shows potential as an adjunctive soothing measure for neonates after surgery. IMPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH: Future studies are needed to confirm the efficacy and utility of white noise intervention in clinical settings.

RESUMEN

Nifedipine (NIF), as one of the dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers, is widely used in the treatment of hypertension. However, misuse or ingestion of NIF can result in serious health issues such as myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, stroke, and even death. It is essential to design a reliable and sensitive detection method to monitor NIF. In this work, an innovative molecularly imprinted polymer dual-emission fluorescent sensor (CDs@PDA-MIPs) strategy was successfully designed for sensitive detection of NIF. The fluorescent intensity of the probe decreased with increasing NIF concentration, showing a satisfactory linear relationship within the range 1.0 × 10-6 M ~ 5.0 × 10-3 M. The LOD of NIF was 9.38 × 10-7 M (S/N = 3) in fluorescence detection. The application of the CDs@PDA-MIPs in actual samples such as urine and Qiangli Dingxuan tablets has been verified, with recovery ranging from 97.8 to 102.8% for NIF. Therefore, the fluorescent probe demonstrates great potential as a sensing system for detecting NIF.

RESUMEN

Innovations in food packaging systems could meet the evolving needs of the market; emerging concepts of non-migrating technologies reduce the negative migration of preservatives from packaging materials, extend shelf life, and improve food quality and safety. Non-migratory packaging activates the surface of inert materials through pretreatment to generate different active groups. The preservative is covalently grafted with the resin of the pretreated packaging substrate through the graft polymerization of the monomer and the coupling reaction of the polymer chain. The covalent link not only provides the required surface properties of the material for a long time but also retains the inherent properties of the polymer. This technique is applied to the processing for durable, stable, and easily controllable packaging widely. This article reviews the principles of various techniques for packaging materials, surface graft modification, and performance characterization of materials after grafting modification. Potential applications in the food industry and future research trends are also discussed.

RESUMEN

Dye-decolorizing peroxidases (DyPs) belong to a novel superfamily of heme peroxidases that can oxidize recalcitrant compounds. In the current study, the GlDyP2 gene from Ganoderma lucidum was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli, and the enzymatic properties of the recombinant GlDyP2 protein were investigated. The GlDyP2 protein could oxidize not only the typical peroxidase substrate ABTS but also two lignin substrates, namely guaiacol and 2,6-dimethoxy phenol (DMP). For the ABTS substrate, the optimum pH and temperature of GlDyP2 were 4.0 and 35 °C, respectively. The pH stability and thermal stability of GlDyP2 were also measured; the results showed that GlDyP2 could function normally in the acidic environment, with a T50 value of 51 °C. Moreover, compared to untreated controls, the activity of GlDyP2 was inhibited by 1.60 mM of Mg2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, and ethanol; 0.16 mM of Cu2+, Zn2+, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, and Na2EDTA·2H2O; and 0.016 mM of Fe2+ and SDS. The kinetic constants of recombinant GlDyP2 for oxidizing ABTS, Reactive Blue 19, guaiacol, and DMP were determined; the results showed that the recombination GlDyP2 exhibited the strongest affinity and the most remarkable catalytic efficiency towards guaiacol in the selected substrates. GlDyP2 also exhibited decolorization and detoxification capabilities towards several dyes, including Reactive Blue 19, Reactive Brilliant Blue X-BR, Reactive Black 5, Methyl Orange, Trypan Blue, and Malachite Green. In conclusion, GlDyP2 has good application potential for treating dye wastewater.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder. Besides skeletal abnormalities, CCD is often associated with dental complications, such as multiple supernumerary teeth and permanent teeth impaction or delayed eruption. METHODS: Supernumerary teeth of axial, sagittal and coronal CBCT view was characterized in detail and 3D image reconstruction was performed. Number and location of teeth, morphology of supernumerary teeth, positional relationship between supernumerary and adjacent permanent teeth, direction of supernumerary teeth in CCD patients were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean age of the 3 CCD patients in this study was 16.7 years. Among 36 supernumerary teeth, the majority of them were identified as apical side located and lingual side located. Normal orientation was the most common type in this study, followed by sagittal orientation, and horizontal orientation. Horizontal orientation teeth were all distributed in the mandible. Supernumerary teeth exhibited significantly shorter crown and dental-root lengths, as well as smaller crown mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters (P < 0.01). There was no difference in the number of supernumerary teeth between the maxilla and mandible, and the premolars region had the largest number of supernumerary teeth and the incisor region had the smallest number. CONCLUSIONS: This study compares number and location of teeth, morphology of supernumerary teeth, positional relationship between supernumerary and adjacent permanent teeth and direction of supernumerary teeth, this study also provides a reference for the comprehensive evaluation of CCD patients before surgery.

RESUMEN

Echovirus 3 (E3) belongs to the species Enterovirus B. Currently, three nearly whole-genome sequences of E3 are available in GenBank in China. In this study, we determined the whole genomic sequences of six E3 strains isolated from the stools of patients with hand-foot-and-mouth disease in Southwest China in 2022. Their nucleotide and amino acid sequences shared 82.1%-86.4% and 96.6%-97.2% identity with the prototype Morrisey strain, respectively, and showed 87.1% and 97.2% mutual identity. The six E3 strains are not clustered with other Chinese strains and formed a novel subgenotype (C6) with the recent American and British strains. Recombination analyses revealed that intertype recombination had occurred in the 2 C and 3D regions of the six E3 strains with coxsackieviruses B5 and B4, respectively. This study augments the nearly whole-genome sequences of E3 in the GenBank database and extends the molecular characterization of this virus in China.

RESUMEN

An ultrafine electro-optical frequency comb (EOFC) with plentiful comb teeth is demonstrated. Adopting a single-frequency fiber laser as a light source, cascade phase modulation based on a sinusoidal signal and a frequency-time transformation (FTT) signal is executed to generate the EOFC with high fineness. Meanwhile, a cyclic fast frequency shifting strategy is introduced to boost the number of comb teeth and the bandwidth of the EOFC. As a result, an EOFC with 12600 comb lines covering a broad bandwidth from -6.3 GHz to 6.3 GHz is established, corresponding to an ultrafine comb space of 1 MHz. Moreover, the power fluctuation of a comb tooth is less than 0.5 dBm. This state-of-the-art EOFC has significant potential in the field of precision spectroscopy.

RESUMEN

Anemia of inflammation (AI) is associated with inflammatory diseases, and inflammation-induced iron metabolism disorder is the major pathogenic factor. Earlier studies have reported a tendency of AI in periodontitis patients, but the explicit relationship and possible pathological mechanisms remain unclear. Here, the analyses of both periodontitis patients and a mouse model of ligature-induced experimental periodontitis showed that periodontitis was associated with lower levels of hemoglobin and hematocrit with evidence of systemic inflammation (increased white blood cell levels) and evidence of iron restriction (low serum iron along with a high serum hepcidin and ferritin levels), in accordance with the current diagnosis criteria for AI. Moreover, periodontal therapy improved the anemia status and iron metabolism disorders. Furthermore, the increased level of hepcidin and significant correlation between hepcidin and key indicators of iron metabolism emphasized the pivotal role of hepcidin in the pathogenesis of periodontitis-related AI. Administration of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) inhibitors Stattic suggested that the IL-6-STAT3-hepcidin signaling pathway participated in this regulatory process. Together, these findings demonstrated that periodontitis should be considered an inflammatory disease that contributes to the development of AI; furthermore, IL-6-STAT3-hepcidin signaling pathway plays a key regulatory role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis-related AI. Our study will provide new insights into the systemic effects of periodontitis, while meaningfully expanding the spectrum of inflammatory diseases that contribute to AI.

RESUMEN

The study aims to explore the role of the ERK signaling pathway in the crosstalk between Dkk-1 and TNF-α in MC3T3E1 pre-osteoblasts under cyclic tensile/compressive stress. A forced four-point bending system was used to apply cyclic uniaxial tensile/compressive strain (2000 µ, 0.5 Hz) to MC3T3E1 cells. Dkk-1 and TNF-α expression were upregulated in MC3T3E1 cells under compressive strain. Cell proliferation, the cell cycle, osteogenesis-related gene (Wnt5a, Runx2, Osterix) expression, ß-catenin expression, and the p-ERK/ERK ratio were significantly enhanced, whereas apoptosis, the RANKL/OPG ratio, and TNF-α expression were significantly attenuated, by Dkk-1 silencing. Dkk-1 expression increased and the effects of Dkk-1 silencing were reversed when exogenous TNF-α was added. Mechanically, TNF-α crosstalked with Dkk-1 through ERK signaling in MC3T3E1 cells. ERK signaling blockade impaired Dkk-1-induced TNF-α expression and TNF-α-mediated Dkk-1 expression. Dkk-1 and TNF-α crosstalked, partially through ERK signaling, in MC3T3E1 cells under compressive/tensile strain, synergistically modulating various biological behaviors of the cells. These findings not only provide mechanical insight into the cellular events and molecular regulation of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), but also aid the development of novel strategies to accelerate OTM.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study aimed to prepare a stable irinotecan liposome (CPT-11 liposome) and evaluate its antitumor efficacy in a range of tumor models. METHODS: CPT-11 liposome was prepared with a Z-average particle size of 110 ~ 120 nm and high entrapment efficiency (> 95%) and had a good stability within 18 months. Then the antitumor efficacy was studied in human colon (Ls-174t), gastric (NCI-N87), pancreatic (BxPC-3) and small cell lung (NCI-H526) cancer xenograft models. The toxicity of high-dose CPT-11 liposome was also evaluated in Beagle dogs. RESULTS: The results showed that the anti-tumor effects of CPT-11 liposome were markedly superior (at least 10 times higher) to those of the CPT-11 injection group in all four xenograft models. The tissue distribution test in the Ls-174t model further demonstrated that the CPT-11 liposome could alter the plasma and tissue distribution of CPT-11, increase the exposure level of its active metabolite SN-38 in tumor, and ultimately improve antitumor efficiency. Meanwhile, CPT-11 liposome showed a much less toxicity than CPT-11 injection in beagle dogs. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the CPT-11 liposome may be developed as a new clinical alternative for the cancer patients.

RESUMEN

The anterolateral thigh flap is often used to repair the wound tissue defect. Because it is difficult to carry out the perforating vessels before and after the operation, it is considered to use digital design combined with 3D printing technology to prepare the digital three-dimensional guide plate, and at the same time, the guide plate positioning algorithm is designed according to the error caused by the different placement of the guide plate at the site to be transplanted. First of all, select the patients with jaw defect, make the patient's jaw model, obtain the corresponding plaster working model through 3D scanning, obtain STL data, design the guide plate in combination with Rihnoceros and other software, and print the flap guide plate corresponding to jaw defect with the help of metal powder using 3D printer. Based on sequential CT images, the localization algorithm takes the improved genetic algorithm as the research object, extracts the information of the transplantation area as the parameter space, codes the parameters such as the coordinates of the end points of the flap transplantation, and constructs the target function and fitness function of the transplantation. In the experiment, the soft tissue of the patients with jaw defects can be well repaired based on the guide plate. The positioning algorithm locates the flap graft under the condition of less environmental parameters, and obtains the corresponding diameter parameters.

RESUMEN

Polydopamine (PDA) is a good adhesion agent for lots of gels inspired by the mussel, whereas hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) usually exhibit extraordinary optoelectronic performance. Herein, mussel-inspired chemistry has been integrated with two-dimensional HOIPs first, leading to the preparation of new crystal (HDA)2PbBr4 (1) (DA = dopamine). The organic cation dopamine can be introduced into PDA resulting in a thin film of (HPDA)2PbBr4 (PDA-1). The dissolved inorganic components of layered perovskite in DMF solution together with H2O2 addition can facilitate DA polymerization greatly. More importantly, PDA-1 can inherit an excellent semiconductor property of HOIPs and robust adhesion of the PDA hydrogel resulting in a self-adhesive photoelectric coating on various interfaces.

RESUMEN

Microplastics have become pervasive in ambient aquatic ecosystems over the last decade and are currently a serious global scale concern. To evaluate the potential toxic effects of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) microplastics on the immune functions of freshwater fish, this study undertook a conducted chronic 60-day dietary exposure experiment with Cyprinus carpio var. larvae. We exposed the fish to four microplastic treatments of different concentrations (food rationed diets): no-plastic (control), 10%, 20% and 30%. At the end of the experimental period the impacts of microplastics on the histology, biochemistry, ROS (reactive oxygen species) levels and gene transcription of immune organs were investigated. The results revealed that PVC microplastics induced cytoplasmic vacuolation in the liver, damaged villi in the intestine, inflammatory cell infiltration, hemosiderosis and vacuolar degeneration in the spleen, glomeruli tuft shrinkage and aggregation of melanin macrophage cells in the kidney. Moreover, following PVC microplastics exposure, ROS levels in the liver and protein levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-6, IL-8, and TNFα in the liver and serum were increased. Furthermore, modifications in the activities of non-specific immunoenzyme ACP (Acid phosphatase), AKP (alkaline phosphatase), LZM (lysozyme), and expression levels of a range of immune-related genes were observed. Using various techniques at the histological, biochemical and molecular levels, our findings demonstrated the effects of PVC microplastics on changes and imbalances in the immune status of carp. The results of this study provide basic toxicological data toward elucidating and quantifying the impacts of microplastics immunotoxicity on aquatic organisms.

RESUMEN

Prior studies of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) have often observed inconsistent results regarding meteorological factors. We propose the hypothesis that these meteorological associations vary in regions because of the heterogeneity of their geographical characteristics. We have tested this hypothesis by applying a geographical detector and Bayesian space-time hierarchy model to measure stratified spatiotemporal heterogeneity and local associations between meteorological factors and HFMD risk in five climate zones in China from January 2016 to December 2017. We found a significant spatial stratified heterogeneity in HFMD risk and climate zone explained 15% of the spatial stratified heterogeneity. Meanwhile, there was a significant temporal stratified heterogeneity of 14% as determined by meteorological factors. Average temperatures and relative humidity had a significant positive effect on HFMD in all climate zones, they were the most obvious in the southern temperate zone. In northern temperate, southern temperate, northern subtropics, middle subtropics and southern subtropics climate zone, a 1 °C rise in temperature was related to an increase of 3.99%, 13.76%, 4.38%, 3.99%, and 7.74% in HFMD, and a 1% increment in relative humidity was associated with a 1.51%, 5.40%, 2.21%, 3.44%, and 4.78% increase, respectively. These findings provide strong support for our hypotheses that HFMD incidence has a significant spatiotemporal stratified heterogeneity and different climate zones have distinct influences on the disease. These findings provide strong support for our hypotheses: HFMD incidence had significant spatiotemporal stratified heterogeneity and different climate zones had distinct influences on it. The study suggested that HFMD prevention and policy should be made according to meteorological variation in each climate zone.

RESUMEN

A molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor was designed for the selective determination of gatifloxacin (GTX) based on dual functional monomers. Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) enhanced the current intensity and zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF8) provided a large surface area to produce more imprinted cavities. In the electropolymerization of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), p-aminobenzoic acid (p-ABA) and nicotinamide (NA) were used as dual functional monomers, and GTX was the template molecule. Taking [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- as an electrochemical probe, an oxidation peak on the glassy carbon electrode was located at about 0.16 V (vs. saturated calomel electrode). Due to the diverse interactions among p-ABA, NA, and GTX, the MIP-dual sensor exhibited higher specificity towards GTX than MIP-p-ABA and MIP-NA sensors. The sensor had a wide linear range from 1.00 × 10-14 to 1.00 × 10-7 M with a low detection limit of 2.61 × 10-15 M. Satisfactory recovery between 96.5 and 105% with relative standard deviation from 2.4 to 3.7% in real water samples evidenced the potential of the method in antibiotic contaminant determination.
