Polypropylene microcentrifuge tubes (MCTs) are increasingly used in lipidome sample preparation. In the absence of a comprehensive study evaluating ramifications of plasticware utilization in mass spectrometry-based lipidomic analyses, we conducted a systematic analysis to elucidate potential negative effects ascribable to labware contamination in serum lipidomics. During serum lipid extractions, tested glassware introduced 24 labware contaminants. In contrast, Eppendorf polypropylene MCTs contributed 485 contaminant features, many of which could be erroneously putatively identified as lipids via their m/z values. Eppendorf MCTs contamination engendered severe ion-suppression of 40 low abundance serum lipids, while generating mild to modest lipid ion-suppression across a multitude of higher abundance coeluting lipids. Less compatible polypropylene MCTs from an alternative manufacturer introduced a staggering 2,949 contaminant m/z values, severely affecting 75 coeluting serum lipids and causing more frequent and pronounced ion-suppression instances. Furthermore, by performing serum extractions with varied initial volumes, it was ascertained that labware-induced lipid ion-suppression is a dynamic phenomenon, contingent on both lipid and labware contaminant concentrations where low-abundance lipids are disproportionately impacted by coelutes of suppressive contaminants. In addition to lipid ion-suppression, the identification and quantification of 7 fatty acid endogenous serum lipids were compromised by the leaching of structurally identical surfactants from MCTs. MCTs artificially introduced 10 additional primary amides extraneous to serum samples. Utmost caution is imperative in interpreting data concerning primary amides and fatty acids when employing plastic labware. Through this investigation, we aspire to elevate awareness regarding the pernicious impact of labware contamination on lipidome analysis.

In lipidomic analysis, plasticware is increasingly being used for lipid extraction and other sample processing procedures over glassware. However, a systematic investigation of the consequences of plasticware use on mass spectrometry (MS)-based lipidome analysis is lacking. In this work, we present an analytical approach for detecting and comparing solvent and labware contaminants encountered in lipidomic workflows. It is shown that the contaminant profiles varied widely between microcentrifuge tubes from different manufacturers. The most suitable polypropylene tubes tested introduced 847 labware-originating contaminant m/z's when three different manufacturing batches were tested for Folch lipid extractions. Of particular concern is that 21 primary amide and fatty acid surfactants were introduced that were identical to biological endogenous lipids, 16 of which had not been previously reported as leachables from polypropylene materials. Alternatively, the use of borosilicate glassware and PTFE-lined screw caps introduced 98 different contaminant m/z's across three manufacturing batches tested for Folch extractions. Despite the overwhelming number of labware contaminants introduced, current databases and literature only facilitated the identification of 32 contaminants. To address the dearth of publicly available contaminant information, we provide a comprehensive labware contamination repository containing high-resolution m/z values, adductation information, retention times, and MS/MS spectra. This resource should prove to be valuable for researchers in detecting and distinguishing contaminants from analytes of interest. A companion paper presents a detailed study of how labware contamination can lead to ion-suppression effects on coeluting lipids and interference in the analysis of endogenous lipids, such as those from human sera.

The intricacy and multifaceted nature of Alzheimer's disease (AD) necessitate therapies that target multiple aspects of the disease. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) emerge as potential agents to mitigate AD symptoms; however, whether their therapeutic efficacy involves modulation of gut microbiota and the microbiome-gut-brain axis (MGBA) remains unexplored. In this study, we evaluated the effects of three distinct MSCs types-derived from the umbilical cord (UCMSC), dental pulp (SHED), and adipose tissue (ADSC)-in an APP/PS1 mouse model of AD. In comparison to saline control, MSCs administration resulted in a significant reduction of behavioral disturbances, amyloid plaques, and phosphorylated tau in the hippocampus and frontal cortex, accompanied by an increase in neuronal count and Nissl body density across AD-afflicted brain regions. Through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we identified partial restoration of gut microbial balance in AD mice post-MSCs treatment, evidenced by the elevation of neuroprotective Akkermansia and reduction of the AD-associated Sphingomonas. To examine whether gut microbiota involved in MSCs efficacy in treating AD, SHED with better anti-inflammatory and gut microbiota recovery effects among three MSCs, and another AD model 5 × FAD mice with earlier and more pathological proteins in brain than APP/PS1, were selected for further studies. Antibiotic-mediated gut microbial inactivation attenuated MSCs efficacy in 5 × FAD mice, implicating the involvement of gut microbiota in the therapeutic mechanism. Functional analysis of altered gut microbiota and targeted bile acid metabolism profiling revealed a significant enhancement in bile acid variety following MSCs therapy. A chief bile acid constituent, taurocholic acid (TCA), was orally administered to AD mice and similarly abated AD symptoms. Nonetheless, the disruption of intestinal neuronal integrity with enterotoxin abrogated the ameliorative impact of both MSCs and TCA treatments. Collectively, our findings substantiate that MSCs confer therapeutic benefits in AD within a paradigm that primarily involves regulation of gut microbiota and their metabolites through the MGBA.

The increasing prevalence and persistence of nanoplastics (NPs) have become critical environmental concerns. These particles have the potential to enter the food chain and accumulate in living organisms, which exerts their adverse effects on human health. The release of nanoparticles from feeding bottles raises concerns about potential health issues, especially for newborns exposed to NPs at the neonatal stage. In this study, we examined the impacts of neonatal exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) on neurodevelopment. Our study demonstrates that exposure to PS-NPs in newborn mice impairs microglial autophagic function and energy metabolism, leading to the disruption of microglia-mediated synaptic pruning during early neurodevelopment. These mice subsequently develop social behavioral defects in adulthood, suggesting the long-lasting effects of neonatal PS-NP exposure on brain development and behavior. Together, these data provide insights into the mechanism by which PS-NPs affect early neurodevelopment, thus emphasizing the crucial need to address plastic pollution globally.

Abbreviata baltazardi Chabaud, 1953 (Nematoda: Physalopteridae) is a hitherto poorly known parasitic nematode species reported from Phrynocephalus helioscopus Pallas (Squamata: Agamidae) in Iran. The current knowledge on the morphology of A. baltazardi is still very limited. In the present study, the detailed morphology of A. baltazardi was studied using light microscopy and, for the first time, scanning electron microscopy, based on newly collected specimens from the yarkand toad-headed agama P. axillaris Blanford Pallas (Squamata: Agamidae) in China. Some erroneous or previously unreported morphological features of A. baltazardi were observed using SEM, which include the presence of one large semicircular protrusion and 20-30 denticles on each pseudolabium, the absence of precloacal medioventral papilla in some individuals and the presence of 4-5 postcloacal medioventral papillae in males. SEM observations also clearly showed the detailed morphology of deirids, cloacal ornamentation, caudal papillae, vulva and egg. Abbreviata baltazardi represents the first species of Abbreviata Travassos, 1920 reported in China.

BACKGROUND: The effects of traction forces at different angles on impacted central incisors(ICI)with varying inverted angles (IA) may be different. The objective of this study was to analyze the biomechanical effects of different force directions (FD) on developmentally inverted ICI with multi-angle variations and to offer insights and guidance for the treatment of inverted ICI. METHODS: Three-dimensional finite element method was employed to simulate clinical scenarios of inverted ICI traction. As such, 0.2 N of force (direction: antero-superior angles of 90°, 100°, 110°, 120°, and 130° relative to the long axis of the inverted ICI crown) was applied to the inverted ICI with inverse angles (IA) of 40°, 30°, 20°, 10° and 0°. Inverted ICI apical displacement and Von Mises stress on periodontal ligament (PDL) and alveolar bone were compared. RESULTS: IA and FD showed minimal influence on the stress distribution in the PDL, as higher stresses were concentrated in the apical region. The higher stresses in the alveolar bone are focused on the cervical and apical regions of the tooth. In particular, IA exerts a more significant impact on stress distribution in the alveolar bone than FD. The influence of IA on the apical displacement of inverted ICI is larger than that of FD. CONCLUSIONS: To promote the health of the root and periodontal tissues, it is recommended to use an angle of 100°-110° relative to the long axis of the ICI crown when dealing with a large IA (> 20°) developmentally inverted ICI. Conversely, an angle of 110°-120° can be used.

The heteroatoms and transition metal co-doped carbon-based catalysts are an important way to improve the catalytic activity of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we reported a facile method to obtain iron, nitrogen, and sulfur co-doped cellulose paper carbon fibers as catalysts (Fe-N-S/CFs) for ORR in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) with the adsorption recovery of Congo red molecules from dye wastewater. The thermal treatment promoted the etching of carbon surface by ferric ions, resulting in increased surface roughness for forming the defective carbon structure. The rich active species and defective carbon formed on the etched surface to enhance the electroactive surface area and effective sites. Fe-N-S/CFs catalysts achieved high half-wave potential due to the synergy effect between chemical components and defect structures. The assembled single-chamber air cathode MFC gained a high maximum power density of 1773 ± 40 mW m-2 versus Pt/C MFC of 1325 ± 94 mW m-2. This work provides a strategy for recovering dye molecules from wastewater to prepare non-precious metal catalysts for enhancing ORR activity.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in the environment. However, it is unclear whether MPs are present in mammalian lungs through inhalation, and if so, could be possibly found in fetal tissues. In this study, we aim to determine the presence and characteristics of particles in domestic and fetal pig lung tissue in the natural environment. Specimens from the lungs of domestic pigs (n = 10) and fetal pigs that already died in matrix during vaginal birth from the non-contaminated area (n = 10) were obtained from farmers' nearby sludge treatment plant. These specimens were compressed between two glass microscope slides, which were examined under polarized light microscopy. In addition, Agilent 8700 LDIR Chemical imaging system (LDIR) was used to determine the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of MPs. According to the polarized light microscope survey of domestic pig lungs, we observed an average of 12 particles/g, which was more than the 6 particles/g observed in fetal pig lungs, which ranged in size from 115.14 µm to 1370.43 µm. All the observed MP particles were fiber in shape. LDIR indicated an average of 180 particles/g of domestic pig lungs, ranging in size from 20.34 µm to 916.36 µm, which was twice as many MPs observed in fetal pig lungs. Furthermore, the compositions of MPs were different between them. LDIR indicated that polyamide (PA) was the most common polymer identified in domestic pig lungs (46.11%), while polycarbonate (PC) was the most common polymer in fetal pig lungs (32.99%). These findings confirmed the presence of MPs in the lung tissue of both domestic and fetal pigs in the natural environment, but the main characteristics differed. This fact indicated the increasing risk of MPs to human respiratory tract is increasing. Further research should be conducted to entirely estimate the specific exposure level on humans and offspring.

Via the solvothermal reaction between Zn(II) or Mn(II) salts and 5-(3,4-dicarboxylphenoxy)nicotinic acid (H3L) ligand, a trifunctional N,O-building block having three diverse kinds of functional groups (O-ether, N-pyridyl and COOH), two new coordination polymers (CPs) could be generated, and their chemical formulae respectively are {[Mn3(L)2(H2O)2]·4H2O} (1) and {[Zn(HL)]·NMP} (2). The complex 2 based on Zn(II) possesses high efficiency of fluorescence quenching for the nitrophenol (2,4,6-trinitrophenol, TNP; 4-nitrophenol, 4-NP; 3-nitrophenol, 3-NP; 2-nitrophenol, 2-NP) in the aqueous solution. Furthermore, the treatment activity of compounds on the atherosclerosis was assessed, and relevant mechanism was investigated. First of all, the ELISA assay was used to measure the content of the inflammatory cytokines released into the plasma. Besides, the levels of the NF-κb signaling pathway in the vascular endothelial cells were measured with real time RT-PCR. The hemolysis test was conducted in this research to measure the biocompatibility of the new compound.

BACKGROUND: Ectodermal Dysplasia is a diverse group of inherited disorders characterized by a congenital defect in two or more ectodermal structures. Due to a fairly low incidence, to the best of our knowledge there are few clues that can assist in making an effective prenatal ultrasound diagnosis. Currently, the prenatal diagnosis of ectodermal dysplasia depends on a fetal genetic test combined with the family history. In this case report, we present a fetal case of ectodermal dysplasia with a remarkable prenatal ultrasound image, genetic testing, family history, and relevant exams of the stillbirth. CASE PRESENTATION: A multipara with a 22-week singleton male pregnancy undergoing a fetal ultrasound examination. The image showed a hypoplastic maxilla and mandible. Subsequently, the ectodermal dysplasia was defined using a family history and genetic testing. The skin pathology from the aborted fetus demonstrated a hypohidrotic type. The computed tomography (CT) reconstruction after induced labor confirmed the prenatal ultrasound findings of the maxilla and mandible. CONCLUSIONS: This case suggested that prenatal ultrasound may provide a valuable clue of ectodermal dysplasia. The diagnosis can be established using further prenatal genetic testing and a family history.

Previously, we developed a simple procedure of intracameral injection of silicone oil (SO) into mouse eyes and established the mouse SOHU (SO-induced ocular hypertension under-detected) glaucoma model with reversible intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation and significant glaucomatous neurodegeneration. Because the anatomy of the non-human primate (NHP) visual system closely resembles that of humans, it is the most likely to predict human responses to diseases and therapies. Here we tried to replicate the mouse SOHU glaucoma model in rhesus macaque monkeys. All six animals that we tested showed significant retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death, optic nerve (ON) degeneration, and visual functional deficits at both 3 and 6 months. In contrast to the mouse SOHU model, however, IOP changed dynamically in these animals, probably due to individual differences in ciliary body tolerance capability. Further optimization of this model is needed to achieve consistent IOP elevation without permanent damage of the ciliary body. The current form of the NHP SOHU model recapitulates the severe degeneration of acute human glaucoma, and is therefore suitable for assessing experimental therapies for neuroprotection and regeneration, and therefore for translating relevant findings into novel and effective treatments for patients with glaucoma and other neurodegenerations.

Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus sanguinis are primary colonizers of the tooth surface. Although generally non-pathogenic in the oral environment, they are a frequent cause of infective endocarditis. Both streptococcal species express a serine-rich repeat surface adhesin that mediates attachment to sialylated glycans on mucin-like glycoproteins, but the specific sialoglycan structures recognized can vary from strain to strain. Previous studies have shown that sialoglycan binding is clearly important for aortic valve infections caused by some S. gordonii, but this process did not contribute to the virulence of a strain of S. sanguinis. However, these streptococci can bind to different subsets of sialoglycan structures. Here we generated isogenic strains of S. gordonii that differ only in the type and range of sialoglycan structures to which they adhere and examined whether this rendered them more or less virulent in a rat model of endocarditis. The findings indicate that the recognition of specific sialoglycans can either enhance or diminish pathogenicity. Binding to sialyllactosamine reduces the initial colonization of mechanically-damaged aortic valves, whereas binding to the closely-related trisaccharide sialyl T-antigen promotes higher bacterial densities in valve tissue 72 hours later. A surprising finding was that the initial attachment of streptococci to aortic valves was inversely proportional to the affinity of each strain for platelets, suggesting that binding to platelets circulating in the blood may divert bacteria away from the endocardial surface. Importantly, we found that human and rat platelet GPIbα (the major receptor for S. gordonii and S. sanguinis on platelets) display similar O-glycan structures, comprised mainly of a di-sialylated core 2 hexasaccharide, although the rat GPIbα has a more heterogenous composition of modified sialic acids. The combined results suggest that streptococcal interaction with a minor O-glycan on GPIbα may be more important than the over-all affinity for GPIbα for pathogenic effects.

OBJECTIVE: In our previous study, tantalum nanoparticle (Ta-NPs) was demonstrated to promote osteoblast proliferation via autophagy induction, but the specific mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, we will explore the potential mechanism. METHODS: Ta-NPs was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and BET specific surface area test. MC3T3-E1 were treated with 0 or 20 µg/mL Ta-NPs with or without pretreatment with 10 µM LY294002, Triciribine, Rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway inhibitors) for 1 h respectively. Western blotting was used to detect the expressions of pathway proteins and LC3B. CCK-8 assay was used to assess cell viability. Flow cytometry was used to detect apoptosis and cell cycle. RESULTS: After pretreatment with LY294002, Triciribine and Rapamycin, the p-Akt/Akt ratio of pathway protein in Triciribine and Rapamycin groups decreased (P < 0.05), while the autophagy protein LC3-II/LC3-I in the Rapamycin group was upregulated obviously (P < 0.001). In all pretreated groups, apoptosis was increased (LY294002 group was the most obvious), G1 phase cell cycle was arrested (Triciribine and Rapamycin groups were more obvious), and MC3T3-E1 cells were proliferated much more (P < 0.01, P < 0.001, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Pretreatment with Triciribine or Rapamycin has a greater effect on pathway protein Akt, cell cycle arrest, autophagy protein, and cell proliferation but with inconsistent magnitude, which may be inferred that the Akt/mTOR pathway, as well as its feedback loop, were more likely involved in these processes.

The C5-C6 nerve roots are usually spared from avulsion after brachial plexus injury (BPI) and can thus be used as donors for nerve repair. A BPI rat model with C5-C6 nerve root stumps has been established in our previous work. The aim of this study was to test whether riluzole loaded into a thermosensitive hydrogel could applied locally in the nerve root stumps of this BPI rat model, thus increasing the reparative effect of the nerve root stumps. Nile red (a hydrophobic dye) was used as a substitute for riluzole since riluzole itself does not emit light. Nile red, loaded into a thermosensitive hydrogel, was added to the nerve root stumps of the BPI rat model. Additionally, eighteen rats, with operation on right brachial plexus, were evenly divided into three groups: control (Con), thermosensitive hydrogel (Gel) and thermosensitive hydrogel loaded with riluzole (Gel + Ri) groups. Direct nerve repair was performed after local riluzole release for two weeks. Functional and electrophysiological evaluations and histological assessments were used to evaluate the reparative effect 8 weeks after nerve repair. Nile red was slowly released from the thermosensitive hydrogel and retrograde transport through the nerve root stumps to the motoneurons, according to immunofluorescence. Discernible functional recovery began earlier in the Gel + Ri group. The compound muscle action potential, ChAT-expressing motoneurons, positivity for neurofilaments and S100, diameter of regenerating axons, myelin sheath thickness and density of myelinated fibers were markedly increased in the Gel + Ri group compared with the Con and Gel groups. Our results indicate that the local administration of riluzole could undergo retrograde transportation through C5-C6 nerve root stumps, thereby promoting neuroprotection and increasing nerve regeneration.

A novel Vogesella strain, YM-1T, was recovered from human urine in PR China in 2017. Cells of strain YM-1T were Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic, motile, non-spore-forming and poly-ß-hydroxybutyrate-accumulating. The strain contained C16:1ω6c/C 16:1ω7c, C16:0 and C18:0ω7c as major fatty acids; phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified phospholipid as major polar lipids; and ubiquinone-8 as the predominant respiratory quinone. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that this strain had highest similarities to Vogesella perlucida DS-28T (98.8 %) and Vogesella mureinivorans 389T (98.1 %). The results of phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the novel strain was clustered and well separated with V. perlucida DS-28T and V. mureinivorans 389T within the genus Vogesella. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and amino acid identity (AAI) analyses showed that this strain was not identified as V. perlucida DS-28T or V. mureinivorans 389T, with values well below the threshold limit for species demarcation (ANI <88.1 %, AAI <88.6 %). Based on the above results, strain YM-1T is proposed to be a novel species of the genus Vogesella with the name Vogesella urethralis sp. nov. (YM-1T=NBRC 113779=CGMCC 1.17135).

BACKGROUND We synthetized a 3D printed poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) scaffold with polydopamine (PDA) coating and lithium chloride (LiCl) deposition for cartilage tissue engineering and analyzed its effect on promoting rabbit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSC) chondrogenesis in vitro. MATERIAL AND METHODS PCL scaffolds were prepared by 3D printing with a well-designed CAD digital model, then modified by PDA coating to produce PCL-PDA scaffolds. Finally, LiCl was deposited on the PDA coating to produce PCL-PDA-Li scaffolds. The physicochemical properties, bioactivity, and biocompatibility of PCL-PDA-Li scaffolds were accessed by comparing them with PCL scaffolds and PCL-PDA scaffolds. RESULTS 3D PCL scaffolds exhibited excellent mechanical integrity as designed. PDA coating and LiCl deposition improved surface hydrophilicity without sacrificing mechanical strength. Li⁺ release was durable and ion concentration did not reach the cytotoxicity level. This in vitro study showed that, compared to PCL scaffolds, PCL-PDA and PCL-PDA-Li scaffolds significantly increased glycosaminoglycan (GAG) formation and chondrogenic marker gene expression, while PCL-PDA-Li scaffolds showed far higher rBMSC viability and chondrogenesis. CONCLUSIONS 3D printed PCL-PDA-Li scaffolds promoted chondrogenesis in vitro and may provide a good method for lithium administration and be a potential candidate for cartilage tissue engineering.

A fluorimetric method is described for the determination of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. It is based on the use of polyethyleneimine-coated silver nanoclusters (AgNCs), which display an intense blue fluorescence peaking at 450 nm (under 375 nm excitation). ALP catalyzes the dephosphorylation of the thiophosphate amifostine to generate a thiol that binds to the AgNCs and causes its fluorescence to be quenched. Under the optimal experimental conditions, fluorescence linearly drops in the 0.08-2.0 U L-1 ALP activity range, and the limit of detection is 0.02 U L-1. The method was successfully applied to the determination of ALP activity in spiked human serum samples. Graphical abstract Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) catalyzes the degradation of amifostine with a generation a thiol product. The thiol quenches the fluorescence of silver nanoclusters, and a method for the detection of ALP down to 0.02 U L-1 was developed.

The authors describe a tetrahedral DNA nanostructure loaded with SYBR Green (SG-TDN) for fluorometric determination of nucleic acids. After intercalating into the TDN, fluorescence of SG is enhanced by 260-fold (exc 480 nm, em 524 nm), and the resulting SG-TDN nanoflare displays >7-fold stronger fluorescence than that of FAM-labeled TDN. The SG-TDNs were coupled to magnetic microparticles and polydopamine nanoparticles to construct multi-functional nanoprobes through sequence hybridization using a toehold strand. The method was applied to detect a stretch of microRNA sequence (20 bp) in buffer and in undiluted serum with excellent selectivity, over a wide linear range and with a low limit of detection (0.2 nM). The probe was also applied for visualization of tumor-related microRNA in living cells via fluorescence imaging. Nanoparticles (NPs) are currently under intensive research for their application in tumor diagnosis and therapy. X-ray fluorescence computed tomography (XFCT) is considered a promising non-invasive imaging technique to obtain the bio-distribution of nanoparticles which include high-Z elements (e.g., gadolinium (Gd) or gold (Au)). In the present work, a set of experiments with quantitative imaging of GdNPs in mice were performed using our benchtop XFCT device. GdNPs solution which consists of 20 mg/mL NaGdF4 was injected into a nude mouse and two tumor-bearing mice. Each mouse was then irradiated by a cone-beam X-ray source produced by a conventional X-ray tube and a linear-array photon counting detector with a single pinhole collimator was placed on one side of the beamline to record the intensity and spatial information of the X-ray fluorescent photons. The maximum likelihood iterative algorithm with scatter correction and attenuation correction method was applied for quantitative reconstruction of the XFCT images. The results show that the distribution of GdNPs in each target slice (containing liver, kidney or tumor) was well reconstructed and the concentration of GdNPs deposited in each organ was quantitatively estimated, which indicates that this benchtop XFCT system provides convenient tools for obtaining accurate concentration distribution of NPs injected into animals and has potential for imaging of nanoparticles in vivo.

Three new substituted bithiophenes (1⁻3), and one new sulf-polyacetylene ester, ritroyne A (16) were isolated from the whole plant of Echinops ritro together with twelve known substituted thiophenes. The structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D NMR as well as MS. Furthermore, the absolute configuration of ritroyne A (16) was established by computational methods. In bioscreening experiments, four compounds (2, 4, 12, 14) showed similar antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 2592 with levofloxacin (8 µg/mL). Five compounds (2, 4, 9, 12, 14) exhibited antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 32⁻64 µg/mL. Three compounds (2, 4, 12) exhibited antifungal activities against Candida albicans ATCC 2002 with MIC values of 32⁻64 µg/mL. However, compound 16 did not exhibit antimicrobial activities against three microorganisms.
