RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Biling Weitong Granules in the treatment of stomach ache disorder. Randomized controlled trial(RCT) of Biling Weitong Granules in the treatment of digestive diseases with stomach ache disorder as the primary symptom was retrieved from Chinese and English electronic databases and trial registration platforms from database inception to June 10, 2022. Two investigators conducted literature screening and data extraction according to the screening criteria. The Cochrane risk-of-bias tool(v 2.0) was used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. Analyses were performed using RevMan 5.4 and R 4.2.2, with summary estimates measured using fixed or random effects models. The primary outcome indicators were the visual analogue scale(VAS) scores and stomach ache disorder symptom scores. The secondary outcome indicators were clinical recovery rate, Helicobacter pylori(Hp) eradication rate, and adverse reaction/events. Twenty-seven RCTs were included with a sample size of 2 902 cases. Meta-analysis showed that compared with conventional western medicine treatments or placebo, Biling Weitong Granules could improve VAS scores(SMD=-1.90, 95%CI[-2.18,-1.61], P<0.000 01), stomach ache disorder symptom scores(SMD=-1.26, 95%CI[-1.71,-0.82], P<0.000 01), the clinical recovery rate(RR=1.85, 95%CI[1.66, 2.08], P<0.000 01), and Hp eradication rate(RR=1.28, 95%CI[1.20, 1.37], P<0.000 01). Safety evaluation revealed that the main adverse events in the Biling Weitong Granules included nausea and vomiting, rash, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and bitter mouth, and no serious adverse events were reported. Egger's test showed no statistical significance, indicating no publication bias. The results showed that Biling Weitong Granules in the treatment of digestive system diseases with stomach ache disorder as the primary symptom could improve the VAS scores and stomach ache disorder symptom scores of patients, relieve stomach ache disorder, and improve the clinical recovery rate and Hp eradication rate, with good safety and no serious adverse reactions. However, the quality of the original studies was low with certain limitations. Future studies should use unified and standardized detection methods and evaluation criteria of outcome indicators, pay attention to the rigor of study design and implementation, and highlight the clinical safety of the medicine to provide more reliable clinical evidence support for clinical application.

RESUMEN

Living organisms have evolved fascinating structural colors to survive in complex natural environments. Artificial photonic composites developed by imitating the structural colors of organisms are applied in displaying, sensing, biomedicine, and many other fields. As emerging materials, photonic composites mediated by supramolecular chemistry, namely, supramolecular photonic composites, are designed and constructed to meet emerging application needs and challenges. This review mainly introduces the constructive strategies, properties, and applications of supramolecular photonic composites. First, constructive strategies of supramolecular photonic composites are summarized, including the introduction of supramolecular polymers into colloidal photonic array templates, coassembly of colloidal particles (CPs) with supramolecular polymers, self-assembly of soft CPs, and compounding photonic elastomers with functional substances via supramolecular interactions. Supramolecular interactions endow photonic composites with attractive properties, such as stimuli-responsiveness and healability. Subsequently, the unique optical and mechanical properties of supramolecular photonic composites are summarized, and their applications in emerging fields, such as colorful coatings, real-time and visual motion monitoring, and biochemical sensors, are introduced. Finally, challenges and perspectives in supramolecular photonic composites are discussed. This article provides general strategies and considerations for the design of photonic materials based on supramolecular chemistry.

RESUMEN

With the ever-growing demands for flexible smart interactive electronics, it remains highly desirable yet challenging to design and fabricate interactive ionic skin with multiple signal synergistic outputs. Herein, high-performance photonic ionogels (PIGs) with excellent stability and synergy sensitivity are designed by locking a non-volatile and non-hygroscopic ionic liquid (IL), that is, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIm][TFSI]), into photonic elastomers based on polymer networks of poly(ethylene glycol) phenyl ether acrylate (PEGPEA). Through manipulating the degree of crosslinking, PIGs exhibit high sensitivity that can output distinct and intuitive color change in visual with the mechanochromic sensitivity of ≈1.76 nm per percent strain and clear electrical signal with the gauge factor of 1, in response to a tiny stretch of millimeter scale. Thanks to the stable photonic elastomers and IL employed, the PIGs developed in this study exhibit good performance under harsh and complex environmental conditions, including high/low temperature (from -35 °C to 100 °C), dry/wet air, and high vacuum. This study provides a novel strategy for developing integrated, stable, and multifunctional photonic ionogels for ionic skin sensors and flexible interactive devices with synergistically optical and electrical output.

RESUMEN

N-Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), an endocannabinoid-like molecule, participates in controlling behaviors associated with mental disorders as an endogenous neuroprotective factor. On the basis of accumulating evidence and our previous data, we tested the hypothesis that the antidepressant-like effects of PEA observed during chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) are mediated by possible targets in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) pathway. In this study, rats were subjected to 35 days of CUMS and treated with drugs such as PEA (2.5, 5.0, or 10 mg/kg, by mouth), fluoxetine (10 mg/kg, by mouth), or the combination of PEA and MK886 (1-[(4-chlorophenyl) methyl]-3-[(1,1-dimethylethyl) thio]-α,α-dimethyl-5-(1-methylethyl)-1H-indole-2-propanoic acid). After behavioral tests, the animals were sacrificed and their hippocampi were dissected for subsequent studies. PEA normalized weight gain, sucrose preferences, locomotor activity in an open-field test, and levels of the PPARα mRNA and protein in the hippocampus, and it reduced serum adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone (CORT) levels in rats subjected to CUMS. PEA reversed the abnormal levels of several oxidative stress biomarkers and increased the concentrations of two neurotrophic factors in the hippocampus of CUMS-induced rats. In addition, PEA alleviated the decrease in hippocampal weight. However, the aforementioned effects of PEA were completely or partially abolished by MK886, a selective PPARα antagonist. On the basis of these findings, the PPARα pathway in the hippocampus is a possible target of the antidepressant effects of PEA, and the maintenance of a stable hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the antioxidant defenses, and normalization of neurotrophic factor levels in the hippocampus are involved in this process.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a genetic disorder that influences structures of ectodermal origin, such as teeth, hair, and sweat glands. Compared with autosomal recessive and dominant modes of inheritance, the X-linked HED (XLHED) characterized by Hypodontia/Oligodontia teeth, Absent/sparse hair, Anhidrosis/hypohidrosis, and characteristic facial features, is the most frequent and its primary cause is the mutation of ectodysplasin A (EDA) gene. This research aimed to expound the clinical and molecular features of a Chinese male with XLHED and to summarize and compare several previous findings. Methods: Genomic DNA was obtained from the peripheral blood of the proband and his family members, then Sanger sequencing was used to perform a mutational analysis of EDA. Real-time quantitative PCR and Western blotting were used to detect EDA expression. The transcriptional activity of NF-κB was detected using a luciferase assay. Results: The probandwith XLHED was identified a novel EDA mutation, c.1119G>C(p.M373I), that affected the molecular analysis of transmembrane protein exon8 mutations, inherited from the mother. He showed a severe multiple-tooth loss, with over 20 permanent teeth missing and sparse hair and eyebrows, dry, thin, and itching skin. Furthermore, his sweating function was abnormal to a certain extent. Discussion: The functional study showed that this novel mutant led to a significant decrease in the EDA expression level and transcriptional activity of NF-κB. Our findings extend the range of EDA mutations in XLHED patients, which provides the basis and idea for further exploring the pathogenesis of XLHED.

RESUMEN

Background: The clinical teaching of esthetic implant-supported restoration of the atrophic maxilla is challenging due to the complexity and unpredictability of bone and soft tissue augmentation. The traditional problem-based learning and case-based learning method (PBL-CBL method) with a full digital workflow (digital PBL-CBL method) provides the students a chance to view clinical cases in a more accurate and measurable way. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of the new digital PBL-CBL method in teaching complex implant cases in esthetic area. Materials & Methods: A full digital workflow of dental implant therapy was established for patients with severely atrophic anterior maxilla. The digital data of cases done in the new workflow was used as teaching materials in digital PBL-CBL teaching. Fifty-four postgraduate students were randomly selected and divided into three groups, including traditional PBL-CBL group (students taught in a PBL-CBL method with no digital cases), digital PBL-CBL group (students taught in a PBL-CBL method with full digital cases) and control group (students taught in didactic teacher-centered method). After training for three months, a study of the students' opinions on the corresponding teaching method was carried out through a feedback questionnaire. A theory test was used to evaluate students' mastery of knowledge about tissue augmentation and esthetic implant restoration. A case analysis was used to determine whether students could apply the knowledge to problem solving. Results: The digital PBL-CBL method resulted in a higher rate of satisfaction than the traditional PBL-CBL method and the didactic teacher-centered method in all items except for "This approach decreases extracurricular work". Case analysis scores of the digital PBL-CBL group were significantly higher than that of the traditional PBL-CBL group and the control group. For the theory test, the digital PBL-CBL group (61.00 ± 6.80) but not traditional PBL-CBL group (55.22 ± 9.86) obtained a significant higher score than the control group (45.11 ± 12.76), although no significant difference was found between the digital PBL-CBL group and the traditional PBL-CBL group. Conclusion: Compared with other methods, students taught with the digital PBL-CBL method showed higher satisfaction and better performance in acquisition of academic knowledge and ability in solving practical clinical problems. The digital PBL-CBL method provided a promising alternative for teaching complex implant cases at the anterior maxilla.

RESUMEN

Organisms in nature have evolved unique structural colors and stimuli-responsive functions for camouflage, warning, and communication over millions of years, which are essential to their survival in harsh conditions. Inspired by these characteristics, colloidal photonic composites (CPCs) composed of colloidal photonic crystals embedded in the polymeric matrix are artificially prepared and show great promise in applications. This review focuses on the summary of building blocks, i.e., colloidal particles and polymeric matrices, and constructive strategies from the perspective of designing CPCs with robust performance and specific functionality. Furthermore, their state-of-the-art applications are also discussed, including colorful coatings, anti-counterfeiting, and regulation of photoluminescence, especially in the field of visualized sensing. Finally, current challenges and potential for future developments in this field are discussed. The purpose of this review is not only to clarify the design principle for artificial CPCs but also to serve as a roadmap for the exploration of next-generation photonic materials.

RESUMEN

African swine fever (ASF), caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV), is an acute, deadly, infectious disease of domestic pigs and wild boars and has a tremendous negative socioeconomic impact on the swine industry. ASF is a notifiable disease to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Currently, no effective vaccine or treatment against ASF is available. Early detection and rapid diagnosis are potentially significant to control ASF spread with the emerging ASFV mutant strains and non-classical symptoms. In this study, we developed a real-time recombinase-aid amplification (RAA) assay to detect the ASFV genome rapidly. Thirty samples were detected using commercial lysis buffer for DNA extraction and equipped with a portable testing instrument. The results showed that the sensitivity of RAA was 103 copies per reaction at 95% probability in 9 min at 39°C. The method was universally specific for three strains of ASFV, and there was no cross-reaction with other pathogens, including foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), classical swine fever virus (CSFV), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2), pseudorabies virus (PRV), and porcine parvovirus (PPV). The coefficient of variation (C.V) of repetitive experiments was 0%, and the coincidence rate was 100% compared to the real-time qPCR. 123 field samples were detected by the real-time RAA assay, and the results showed that the clinical coincidence rate of the real-time RAA assay was 98% compared to the real-time qPCR assay. The advantages of this method were as follows: the extraction of DNA can be performed on site, the DNA template is directly used, a small battery-powered instrument is easily available, and the on-site diagnostic process is finished within an hour. These suggest that this assay could be used to detect different genotypes of ASFV and play a vital role in the control of ASF.

RESUMEN

Rapid and sensitive diagnostics in the early stage of bacterial infection and immediate treatment play critical roles in the control of infectious diseases. However, it remains challenging to develop integrated systems with both rapid detection of bacterial infection and timely on-demand disinfection ability. Herein, we demonstrate a photonic hydrogel platform integrating visual diagnosis and on-site photothermal disinfection by incorporating Fe3O4@C nanoparticles into a poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-co-polyacrylamide (PHEMA-co-PAAm) matrix. In vitro experiments demonstrate that such a hydrogel can respond to pH variation caused by bacterial metabolism and generate the corresponding color changes to realize naked-eye observation. Meanwhile, its excellent photothermal conversion ability enables it to effectively kill bacteria by destroying cell membranes under near-infrared irradiation. Moreover, the pigskin infection wound model also verifies the bacterial detection performance and disinfection ability of the hydrogel in vivo. Our strategy demonstrates a new approach for visual diagnosis and treatment of bacterial infections.

RESUMEN

Solar steam generation provides a promising and low-cost solution for freshwater production in energy scarcity areas. However, in real-world applications, evaporators are easily affected by microorganism contamination in source water, causing surface corrosion, structural damage, or even invalidation. Developing anti-biofouling and antibacterial evaporators is significant for long-term stable freshwater production. Herein, a composite polyelectrolyte photothermal hydrogel consisting of sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA), [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (METAC), and polypyrrole (PPy) with anti-biofouling and antibacterial properties is developed. Crediting sufficient ammonium groups and zwitterionic segments, the optimized polyelectrolyte hydrogel exhibits an ∼90% antibacterial ratio against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) and effectively controls biological contamination. Under 1.0 kW m-2 solar irradiation, a rapid water evaporation rate of ∼1.690 kg m-2 h-1 and a high solar-to-evaporation efficiency of ∼95.94% are achieved with the photothermal hydrogel. We show that a lab-made setup integrated with the hydrogel can realize ∼0.455 kg m-2 h-1 freshwater production from seawater under natural sunlight. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibits excellent durability with a stable evaporation rate of ∼1.617 kg m-2 h-1 in real seawater for over 6 weeks, making it fullhearted in the real-world application of solar steam generation.

RESUMEN

Visual loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is qualified to be applied in the field to detect pathogens due to its simplicity, rapidity and cost saving. However, the color changes in currently reported visual reverse transcription LAMP (RT-LAMP) for foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) detection are not so obvious to the naked eye, so interpretation of results is troublesome. In this study, a new naked-eye visual RT-LAMP to detect all seven distinct serotypes of FMDV was established based on the 3D genes by using pH-sensitive neutral red as the indicator, rendering a sharp contrast of color changes between the negative (light orange) and the positive (pink). Analytical sensitivity tests showed that the detection limit of the visual RT-LAMP was 104 copies/µL while those were 103 and 104 copies/µL for the RT-qPCR and conventional RT-PCR methods, respectively. Specificity tests proved that the established visual RT-LAMP assay had no cross-reactivity with other common livestock viruses. Furthermore, the analysis of 59 clinical samples showed 98.31% and 100% concordance with the RT-qPCR and the RT-PCR, respectively. The pan-serotypic FMD visual RT-LAMP assay could be suitable for a pen-side test of all seven serotypes of FMDV because the results could be easily distinguished by the naked eye without the requirement of complicated instruments and professional technicians. Hence, the novel method may have a promising prospect in field tests which exert an important role in monitoring, preventing, and controlling FMD, especially in regions with no PCR or qPCR instrument available.

RESUMEN

Solar-driven steam generation has been recognized as a sustainable and low-cost solution to freshwater scarcity using abundant solar energy. To harvest freshwater, various interfacial evaporators with rational designs of photothermal materials and structures have been developed concentrating on increasing the evaporation rate in the past few years. However, pathogenic microorganism accumulation on the evaporators by long-duration contact with natural water resources may lead to the deterioration of water transportation and the reduction of the evaporation rate. Here, we develop cationic photothermal hydrogels (CPHs) based on [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (METAC) and photothermal polypyrrole (PPy) with bacteria-inhibiting capability for freshwater production via solar-driven steam generation. A rapid water evaporation rate of 1.592 kg m-2 h-1 under simulated solar irradiation is achieved with CPHs floating on the water surface. Furthermore, we find that CPHs possess nearly 100% antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The significant bacteria-inhibiting capability is mainly attributed to the large number of ammonium groups on the CPH network. Moreover, we show that CPHs exhibit good applicability with stable evaporation in natural lake water over 2 weeks, and the number of bacteria in purified lake water is significantly reduced. The device based on CPHs can achieve ∼0.49 kg m-2 h-1 freshwater production from lake water under natural sunlight. This study provides an attractive strategy for the evaporator to inhibit biological contamination and a potential way for long-term stable freshwater production from natural water resources in practical application.

RESUMEN

Graft copolymer starch-graft-polyacrylonitrile (St-g-PAN) was synthesized by homo-grafting acrylonitrile (AN) from water soluble starch as Ce(IV) was used as an initiator. St-g-PAN nanofibers were prepared via electrospinning St-g-PAN solution in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The effects of the spinning parameters such as flow rate, spinning voltage, and collector distance on the St-g-PAN nanofiber diameter were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to characterize the structure and surface morphology of the nanofibers. The results showed that the nanofiber diameter depended strongly on the processing parameters. Moreover, the nanofiber had good water resistance, biocompatibility, and tensile intensity. As the cyano groups on St-g-PAN nanofibers were transformed to amidoxime groups, the obtained St-g-PAO nanofiber displayed an excellent adsorption ability, with the adsorption of Cr 533.4 mg·g-1 at pH = 2.0 as K2Cr2O7 solution 500 mg·L-1 in water was used as the adsorption target. Therefore, these St-g-PAN nanofibers may find potential applications in a wide variety of fields such as tissue engineering, pharmaceutics, energy, and environmental science and engineering.

RESUMEN

Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to investigate well-known energetic material cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX) crystal, glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and RDX/GAP propellant. The results show that the binding energies on different crystalline surface of RDX change in the order of (0 1 0) > (1 0 0) > (0 0 1). The interactions between RDX and GAP have been analyzed by means of pair correlation functions. The mechanical properties of RDX/GAP propellant, i.e., elastic coefficients, modulus, Cauchy pressure, and Poisson's ratio, etc., have been obtained. It is found that mechanical properties are effectively improved by adding some amounts of GAP polymer, and the overall effect of GAP on three crystalline surfaces of RDX changes in the order of (1 0 0) > (0 1 0) > (0 0 1). The energetic properties of RDX/GAP propellant have also been calculated and the results show that compared with the pure RDX crystal, the standard theoretical specific impulse (I(sp)) of RDX/GAP propellant decrease, but they are still superior to those of double base propellant.
