RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: By including untreated obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) patients as the control group, this study explores the influence of minimally invasive surgical treatment and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on OSAHS patients, with the subjective and objective performance. The study also discusses their relationship, determines the effect factor, and provides a simple and practical method for evaluation of clinical efficacy. METHODS: A total of 90 OSAHS patients, who were diagnosed in the Sleep Disorders Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Sichuan Province from May 2014 to May 2016, were selected for the present study. These patients were divided into three groups: surgery group, CPAP group, and untreated group. These patients were followed up at six months, one year, and two years, respectively. The physiological indicators, clinical symptoms, degree of daytime sleepiness and quality of life were compared among these three groups. The daytime sleepiness and the quality of life before and after minimally invasive surgery and CPAP treatment were evaluated, and the subjective and objective efficacy of surgery and CPAP treatment was explored. RESULTS: Among these 90 patients, 11 (12.2%) patients had hypertension, while two (2.2%) patients had diabetes. The average AHI score was 50.53±23.39 per hour, and the mean minimum oxygen saturation and mean oxygen saturation was 71.25±14.16% and 90.13±5.90%, respectively. There were statistically significant differences in mouth breathing, morning sore throat and daytime sleepiness in the group having received surgery at 0.5 year and one year. In the CPAP group, there were statistically significant differences in mouth breathing, morning sore throat and daytime sleepiness at 0.5 year, one year and two years. Moreover, there were statistically significant differences in memory loss at one year and two years, and there were statistically significant differences in frequent nocturia at one year. The ESS value in the surgery group decreased at 0.5 year and one year, but increased at two years. The situation was the same in terms of the total points and in each dimension of the SF-36 paramter. The delta values of ESS among the three groups had statistical significance at 0.5 year, one year and two years, in which the CPAP group experienced the most changes, followed by the surgery group and the group received health education. CONCLUSION: For minimally invasive surgery, CPAP therapy and health education can improve daytime sleepiness and quality of life. CPAP therapy was found to be the most effective, followed by minimally invasive surgery and provision of health education. However, the treatment of OSAHS should be comprehensive.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of saliva of patients with chronic periodontitis (CPD) on the differentiation, activation, and secretion of osteoclast-maturing mediators of macrophages. METHODS: A total of 40 saliva samples were collected from healthy donors (n=20) and severe periodontitis patients (n=20). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and THP-1 monocyte line cells were challenged with 15% saliva for 5 days. The phenotype, surface marker, and phagocytosis of macrophages were analyzed by flow cytometry and microscopy. Osteoclast-maturing mediators were assayed by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. RESULTS: When PBMCs were treated with CPD saliva for 5 days, 61.25%±11.33% of cells were transformed into large granular cells; 86.78%±13.69% of large granular cells were identified as CD14⁺⁺CD16⁺ macrophages. When THP-1 cells were treated with CPD saliva, most cells attached to the bottom of cell culture plates, thereby exhibiting macrophage morphology and releasing additional osteoclast-maturing mediators. Furthermore, the phagocytosis of THP-1 cells considerably increased in the presence of CPD saliva (66.35%±9.67%) compared with medium control (33.33%±7.52%), or healthy saliva (40.71%±3.52%). CONCLUSIONS: Saliva from patients with CPD can induce macrophage differentiation, activate phagocytose microorganisms, and secrete osteoclast-maturing mediators.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the release feature of Res-nanoliposomes in vitro and clarify the difference in absorption of Res-nanoliposomes from varied intestinal segments and the absorptive mechanism in vivo. METHOD: Dialytic method was used to determine resveratrol release rate of Res-nanoliposomes in vitro. An in situ rat perfusion method was used to investigate the intestinal absorption of Res-nanoliposomes. RESULT: Resveratrol release from nanoliposomes in vitro fitted the log-normal distribution equation and had a property of sustained release. Compared with other intestinal segments, significantly high percentage of Res-nanoliposomes was absorbed in ileum (P < 0.001). The absorption rate constants (ka) of Res-nanoliposomes in intestine were not significantly different. CONCLUSION: Res-nanoliposomes could sustain to release drug in vitro. The absorption was a first-order process with the passive diffusion mechanism. The Res-nanoliposomes could promote the absorption of Res in rat small intestine.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Since the outbreak of renal diseases among children who had consumed melamine-tainted powdered formula in 2008, urinary system ultrasound examination was carried out for these children at our hospital. This study aimed to investigate the ultrasonographic characteristics of urolithiasis caused by melamine-tainted powdered formula. METHODS: From September 12 to October 9, 2008, urinary system ultrasound examination for children after consumption of melamine-tainted powdered formula was carried out at the Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University, China. A total of 15,577 infants and children were subjected to the examination. A questionnaire with items including demographic characteristics, history of exposure and clinical symptoms were completed before examination. RESULTS: Among the 15,577 children, 7988 were boys and 7,589 girls with age ranging from 1 month to 15 years (mean age, 22 months). Urolithiasis was found in 562 patients with an identification rate of 3.6%. Urolithiasis was identified mainly in the children aged 36 months or younger (88.6%). Unilateral kidney calculi were found in 431 children and bilateral kidney calculi in 131 children. Eleven of these children also had ureteric calculi, 1 had bladder calculi, 2 had urethral calculi, and 2 had gallbladder calculi. Fifteen children had urinary tract obstruction. Ultrasonographic characteristics of these melamine calculi were different from the calcium oxalate calculi, i.e., the lesions were less echogenic, had a more "sandy" appearance and were less dense. The posterior portion of the calculi could be observed and was accompanied with a feeble or absent acoustic shadow. CONCLUSIONS: Melamine-induced calculi were ultrasonographically less echogenic, sand-like and discrete; the posterior portion of the calculi was accompanied with a feeble or absent acoustic shadow. It might be a new type of urolithiasis in children.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the influence of hand-mixed methods on the compressive strength of the zinc phosphate dental cement. METHODS: Three skilled nurses used three kinds of common clinical hand-mixed methods (included the unidirectional rotation method, the alternate pro and con bidirectional rotation method and the pulling and pushing with folding method) to mix the zinc phosphate dental cement on the same condition (i.e. same indoor temperature and humidity, the same mixing ratio, mixing time, mixing frequency and the same mixing instruments and so on). The mixed zinc phosphate cement was packed into the plastic cylinders with 10 mm-high and 5 mm-bore. After the mixed zinc phosphate cement coagulated, compressive strength was tested separately. RESULTS: The compressive strength of the zinc phosphate dental cement mixed with the alternate pro and con bidirectional rotation method was the best, and the value was (106.11+/- 4.82) MPa. The compressive strength of the zinc phosphate dental cement mixed with the pulling and pushing with folding method was lower, and the value was (77.57 +/- 6.26) MPa. The compressive strength of the zinc phosphate dental cement mixed with the unidirectional rotation method was the lowest, and the value was (54.41 +/- 5.08) MPa. The compressive strength of the zinc phosphate dental cement mixed with the unidirectional rotation method and the pulling and pushing with folding method could not achieve the clinical required compressive strength (about 100 MPa), while the compressive strength mixed with the alternate pro and con bidirectional rotation method was above 100 MPa. CONCLUSION: The alternate pro and con bidirectional rotation method to mix the zinc phosphate dental cement is recommended in clinic.
