RESUMEN

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic disease caused byMycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), which shows a long treatment cycle often leads to drug resistance, making treatment more difficult. Immunogens present in the pathogen's cell membrane can stimulate endogenous immune responses. Therefore, an effective lipid-based vaccine or drug delivery vehicle formulated from the pathogen's cell membrane can improve treatment outcomes. Herein, we extracted and characterized lipids fromMycobacterium smegmatis, and the extracts contained lipids belonging to numerous lipid classes and compounds typically found associated with mycobacteria. The extracted lipids were used to formulate biomimetic lipid reconstituted nanoparticles (LrNs) and LrNs-coated poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (PLGA-LrNs). Physiochemical characterization and results of morphology suggested that PLGA-LrNs exhibited enhanced stability compared with LrNs. And both of these two types of nanoparticles inhibited the growth of M. smegmatis. After loading different drugs, PLGA-LrNs containing berberine or coptisine strongly and synergistically prevented the growth of M. smegmatis. Altogether, the bacterial membrane lipids we extracted with antibacterial activity can be used as nanocarrier coating for synergistic antibacterial treatment of M. smegmatis─an alternative model of Mtb, which is expected as a novel therapeutic system for TB treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study is to explore the clinical effect of crus of helix incision through the posterior parotid gland approach in the treatment of Mid-or High-Level mandibular condylar fractures. METHODS: From September 2020 to June 2023, we performed incision reduction internal fixation of 23 patients with mid-level or high-level fractures of the mandibular condylar through the approach of the posterior parotid gland, and observed the effect of the operation. RESULTS: After a follow-up period of 6 to 12 months, all patients showed no signs of postoperative facial paralysis or salivary gland fistula. In addition, satisfactory scars were observed in the operation area, and the occlusion function had recovered well. CONCLUSION: The approach of using a crus of helix incision through the posterior parotid gland proved to be an effective method for treating mid-level or high-level fractures of the condylar fractures. This technique offers several advantages, including adequate exposure, minimal facial nerve injury, ease of incision and reduction, inconspicuous scarring, and a more concealed incision.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the methods and clinical effects of multidisciplinary collaborative treatment for occlusal reconstruction in patients with old jaw fractures and dentition defects. METHODS: Patients with old jaw fractures and dentition defects who underwent occlusal reconstruction at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Air Force Military Medical University from January 2018 to December 2022 were enrolled. Clinical treatment was classified into 3 phases. In phase I, techniques such as orthognathic surgery, microsurgery, and distraction osteogenesis were employed to reconstruct the correct three-dimensional (3D) jaw position relationship. In phase II, bone augmentation and soft tissue management techniques were utilized to address insufficient alveolar bone mass and poor gingival soft tissue conditions. In phase III, implant-supported overdentures or fixed dentures were used for occlusal reconstruction. A summary of treatment methods, clinical efficacy evaluation, comparative analysis of imageological examinations, and satisfaction questionnaire survey were utilized to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy in patients with traumatic old jaw fractures and dentition defects. All data are summarized using the arithmetic mean and standard deviation and compared using independent sample t-tests. RESULTS: In 15 patients with old jaw fractures and dentition defects (an average age of 32 years, ranging from 18 to 53 years), there were 7 cases of malocclusion of single maxillary fracture, 6 of malocclusion of single mandible fracture, and 2 of malocclusion of both maxillary and mandible fractures. There were 5 patients with single maxillary dentition defects, 2 with single mandibular dentition defects, and 8 with both maxillary and mandibular dentition defects. To reconstruct the correct 3D jaw positional relationship, 5 patients underwent Le Fort I osteotomy of the maxilla, 3 underwent bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy of the mandible, 4 underwent open reduction and internal fixation for old jaw fractures, 3 underwent temporomandibular joint surgery, and 4 underwent distraction osteogenesis. All patients underwent jawbone augmentation, of whom 4 patients underwent a free composite vascularized bone flap (26.66%) and the remaining patients underwent local alveolar bone augmentation. Free gingival graft and connective tissue graft were the main methods for soft tissue augmentation (73.33%). The 15 patients received 81 implants, of whom 11 patients received implant-supported fixed dentures and 4 received implant-supported removable dentures. The survival rate of all implants was 93.82%. The final imageological examination of 15 patients confirmed that the malocclusion was corrected, and the clinical treatment ultimately achieved occlusal function reconstruction. The patient satisfaction questionnaire survey showed that they were satisfied with the efficacy, phonetics, aesthetics, and comfort after treatment. CONCLUSION: Occlusal reconstruction of old jaw fractures and dentition defects requires a phased sequential comprehensive treatment, consisting of 3D spatial jaw correction, alveolar bone augmentation and soft tissue augmentation, and implant-supported occlusal reconstruction, achieving satisfactory clinical therapeutic efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Fiber added to the diet can promote intestinal mucin secretion, relieve intestinal inflammation, and enhance the intestinal barrier function. Glycosylation is the key to mucin function. However, there are few studies on the correlation between dietary fiber and mucin glycosylation, especially two kinds of dietary fiber with different solubility. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of soluble glucomannan (GM) and insoluble cellulose (CL) treatment on mucin secretion and mucin glycosylation-related gene expression in the colons of mice. RESULTS: The GM group significantly increased the goblet cell number, crypt depth, and the expression of mucin 2 (Muc2) and mucin 3a (Muc3a) genes in the colon. At the same time, the analysis of the colon transcriptome showed that the GM group changed the expression of genes related to the mucin glycosylation process, and the GM group up-regulated the expression of Gcnt3, Gcnt4, St3gal1, Galnt13, and B3gnt6 genes involved in the O-glycosylation process. Similarly, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis showed that differentially glycosylated genes in the GM group were mainly related to the biosynthesis of mucin type O-glycans, while the genes in the CL group were related to the biosynthesis of various types of N-glycans. The correlation analysis between colonic microbes and differentially glycosylated genes also showed that the abundance of Alistipes in the GM group was significantly associated with the expression of Gcnt3, a key glycosylation gene. CONCLUSION: Glucomannan treatment was more favorable for colonic Muc2 and Muc3a secretion and mucin O-glycosylation gene expression. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the socket healing outcome after alveolar ridge preservation at infected molar sites using an erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Er:YAG) laser. METHODS: Eighteen patients who needed molar extraction and exhibited signs of infection were included and allocated into either the laser group or the control group. Er:YAG laser irradiation for degranulation and disinfection was performed with alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) in the laser group. Traditional debridement with a curette was performed in the control group. Two months after ARP, bone tissue samples were harvested at the time of implant placement for histological analysis. Assessment of dimension changes in alveolar bone was conducted by superimposing two cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans taken at baseline and two months after extraction. RESULTS: Histologically, after two months of healing, Er:YAG laser treatment resulted in more newly formed bone (laser: 17.75 ± 8.75, control: 12.52 ± 4.99, p = 0.232). Moreover, greater osteocalcin (OCN) positive expression and lower runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX-2) positive expression were detected in the laser group. However, no statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups. The difference in the vertical resorption of the buccal bone plate was statistically significant between groups (laser: -0.31 ± 0.26 mm, control: -0.97 ± 0.32 mm, p < 0.05). Major changes in ridge width were observed at 1 mm below the bone crest. However, the differences between groups were not significant (laser: -0.36 ± 0.31 mm, control: -1.14 ± 1.24 mm, p = 0.171). CONCLUSIONS: ARP with Er:YAG laser irradiation seemed to improve bone healing by regulating osteogenesis-related factor expression in the early stage at infected sites. Solid photothermal materials with favorable biocompatibility and modifiable mechanical properties demonstrate obvious superiority and growing demand. In this work, polydopamine (PDA) induced functionalization of regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) fibers has satisfactory photothermal conversion ability and flexibility. Based on multilevel engineering, RSF solution containing PDA nanoparticles is wet spun to PDA-incorporating RSF (PDA@RSF) fibers, and then the fibers are coated with PDA via oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine to form PDA@RSF-PDA (PRP) fibers. During the wet spinning process, PDA is to adjust the mechanical properties of RSF by affecting its hierarchical structure. Meanwhile, coated PDA gives the PRP fibers extensive absorption of near-infrared light and sunlight, which is further fabricated into PRP fibrous membranes. The temperature of PRP fibrous membranes can be adjusted and increases to about 50 °C within 360 s under 808 nm laser irradiation with a power density of 0.6 W cm-2 , and PRP fibrous membranes exhibit effective photothermal cytotoxicity both in vitro and in vivo. Under the simulated sunlight, the temperature of PRP fiber increases to more than 200 °C from room temperature and the material can generate 4.5 V voltage when assembled with a differential thermal battery, which means that the material also has the potential for flexible wearable electronic devices.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Genetic and dietary factors are important contributors to the development of dental fluorosis (DF). This study investigated the association between DF and dietary carotenoids, and explored whether the association was modified by polymorphisms of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2 rs11968525) in Guizhou, China. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study with a total of 899 adults aged 18-75 years were enrolled in the study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to assess dietary habits using a validated 75 item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Sociodemographic and lifestyle information, and blood and urine samples were also collected. Genotypes were evaluated using TaqMan single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) Genotyping Assay. RESULTS: There were significant dose-dependent inverse associations of the prevalence of DF with intake of α-carotene, ß-carotene, lutein/zeaxanthin, lycopene and total carotenoids (p-trend ranged from <0.001-0.004). The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of DF comparing the highest against lowest quartile were 0.56 (0.35, 0.92) for α-carotene, 0.53 (0.35, 0.81) for ß-carotene, 0.44 (0.27, 0.74) for lycopene, 0.35 (0.21, 0.58) for lutein/zeaxanthin in combination and 0.42 (0.25, 0.69) for total carotenoids (all p-trend<0.005). Intake of ß-cryptoxanthin was not found to be related to DF. The inverse association of DF with dietary intake of α-carotene and ß-carotene was more evident in individuals with the AG+AA genotype (p-interaction<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Higher dietary carotenoids were associated with a lower occurrence of DF, polymorphisms in SOD2 (rs 11968525) modified the associations between dietary intake of carotene and DF. These findings provide evidence for precision prevention of fluorosis.

Developing an efficient signal amplification strategy is very important to improve the sensitivity of bioanalysis. In this paper, a liposome-assisted enzyme catalysis signal amplification strategy was developed for electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassay of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in a split-type mode. The sandwich immunoreaction occurred in a 96-well plate, and glucose oxidase (GOx) encapsulated and antibody-modified liposomes were used as labels. The ECL detection was carried out using a rGO-Au NP modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The large amount of generated H2O2, i.e. the coreactant of the luminol system, and the excellent catalytic behavior of rGO-Au NPs greatly boosted the ECL signal, resulting in the signal amplification. The developed ECL immunosensor for detecting PSA achieved a wider linear range from 1.0 × 10-13 to 1.0 × 10-8 g mL-1 and a detection limit of 1.7 × 10-14 g mL-1. The application of the proposed strategy was demonstrated by analyzing PSA in human serum samples with recoveries from 89.0% to 113.0%, and relative standard deviations (RSDs) were less than 6.6%. This work provides a new horizon to expand the application of liposomes for ECL bioanalysis.

Wool and silk fiber are the most extensive resources of protein fibers and have been used in the textile field for many years. The extracted biocompatible proteins are more and more widely used in flexible devices, sensors, tissue engineering, etc. Here, a fully biomaterial based flexible humidity sensor has been successfully fabricated for the first time. Interdigital electrodes of humidity sensor are printed on a transparent sensor substrate made of silk protein by inkjet printing. The humidity sensitive material is gold nanoparticles hosted nitrogen doped carbon (AuNPs@NC), which is fabricated by in situ dispersion of gold nanoparticles in a wool keratin assisted porous carbon precursor. The best treatment condition of the sensitive materials is obtained by comparing the sensitivity of humidity response. Moreover, the as-prepared biocompatible flexible sensor was successfully used to detect human respiration.

Turning insulating silk fibroin materials into conductive ones turns out to be the essential step toward achieving active silk flexible electronics. This work aims to acquire electrically conductive biocompatible fibers of regenerated Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) materials based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) templated nucleation reconstruction of silk fibroin networks. The electronical conductivity of the reconstructed mesoscopic functional fibers can be tuned by the density of the incorporated CNTs. It follows that the hybrid fibers experience an abrupt increase in conductivity when exceeding the percolation threshold of CNTs >35 wt%, which leads to the highest conductivity of 638.9 S m-1 among organic-carbon-based hybrid fibers, and 8 times higher than the best available materials of the similar types. In addition, the silk-CNT mesoscopic hybrid materials achieve some new functionalities, i.e., humidity-responsive conductivity, which is attributed to the coupling of the humidity inducing cyclic contraction of SFs and the conductivity of CNTs. The silk-CNT materials, as a type of biocompatible electronic functional fibrous material for pressure and electric response humidity sensing, are further fabricated into a smart facial mask to implement respiration condition monitoring for remote diagnosis and medication.

To design higher-strength natural scaffold materials, wool keratin (WK) rich in α-helix structures is used as a well-defined foreign substrate, which induces the formation of ß-crystallites in silk fibroin (SF). Consequently, the macroscopic properties of silk materials (such as the rheological properties of SF hydrogels and the mechanical properties of stents) can be manipulated by governing the change in the hierarchical mesoscopic structure of silk materials. In this work, by monitoring the structure and morphology in the SF gel process, the mechanism of the effect of keratin on SF network formation was speculated, which was further used to design ultra-high-strength protein scaffolds. It has been confirmed that WK accelerates the gelation of SF by reducing the multistep nucleation barrier and increasing the primary nucleation sites, and then establishing a high-density SF domain network. The modulus of the protein composite scaffold prepared by this facile strategy can reach 11.55 MPa, and the MC-3T3 cells can grow well on the scaffold surface. The results suggest that freeze-dried biocompatible SF-based scaffolds are potential candidates for bone tissue engineering.

We synthesized amino-modified poly(ε-caprolactone) PCN-b-PEG-b-PCN (PECN) triblock copolymers and studied the contribution of the introduced amino groups to the drug delivery efficiency of PECN nanoparticles (NPs) and their injectable thermosensitive hydrogels. PECN15 with an optimal amino group content was obtained. Firstly, the hydrophobic drug paclitaxel (PTX) was loaded into PECN15 up to 5.91% and formed PTX/PECN NPs 90 nm in size and with a slightly positive charge (7.3 mV). Furthermore, the injectable PTX/PECN NPs aqueous solution (25 wt%) at ambient temperature could undergo fast gelation at 37 °C and sustainedly release PTX/PECN NPs in 10 days. More importantly, compared with our previously reported PECT NPs, the PECN NPs without an increase in toxicity could improve the cell uptake and enhance intracellular drug release by responding to the acidic environment of the endosome. Thus, the PTX/PECN NPs presented a lower IC50 of 3.14 µg mL-1 than that of the PTX/PECT NPs (7.67 µg mL-1) and free PTX (4.65 µg mL-1). Moreover, through peritumoral injection, the PTX/PECNGel showed 94.27% inhibition rate of tumor growth on day 19, higher than PTX/PECTGel (72.28%) and Taxol® (47.03%). Therefore, the PECN NPs hydrogel provided a more effective injectable platform to enhance local cancer chemotherapy, and also provided the possibility of further functionalization by the reactive amino groups.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to assess the efficacy of occlusal splints in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This systematic review was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Four databases (Medline via Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase and Scopus) were searched, the last search was conducted on April 2020. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) employing the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) or Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) as diagnostic criteria and including occlusal splint as one of the experimental groups were included in the present study. The data from the included studies were extracted and assessed for risk of bias. RESULTS: Eleven studies were included. The sample size ranged from 12 to 96 subjects. The male to female ratio was 0 to 25%. The mean length of follow-up was 4 months. Occlusal splint had a positive effect on mandibular movements in all included studies. Seven studies showed a positive effect of occlusal splint on chronic pain reduction and pain intensity, while two others showed improvement of temporomandibular joint clicking sounds and locking of the jaws. Moreover, improvements in mouth opening, depression, and anxiety symptoms, were reported in four studies. CONCLUSIONS: An occlusal splint can be considered as a non-invasive treatment approach for patients with TMD, especially those with signs and symptoms of restriction of mandibular movement and pain. Moreover, the present findings highlighted an urgent need of a standardised consensus regarding the prognostic evaluation of TMD.

Poly(ε-caprolactone) triacrylate (PCLTA) is attractive in tissue engineering because of its good biocompatibility and processability. The crosslinking time strongly influences PCLTAs cellular behaviors. To investigate these influences, PCLTAs with different molecular weights were crosslinked under UV light for times ranging from 1 to 20 min. The crosslinking efficiency of PCLTA increased with decreasing the molecular weight and increasing crosslinking time which could increase the gel fraction and network stiffness and decrease the swelling ratio. Then, the PCLTA networks crosslinked for different time were used as substrates for culturing rat aortic smooth muscle cells (SMCs). SMC attachment and proliferation all increased when the PCLTA molecular weight increased from 8k to 10k and then to 20k at the same crosslinking time. For the same PCLTA, SMC attachment, proliferation, and focal adhesions increased with increasing the crosslinking time, in particular, between the substrates crosslinked for less than 3 min and longer than 5 min. This work will provide a good experimental basis for the application of PCLTA.

Due to the natural biodegradability and biocompatibility, silk fibroin (SF) is one of the ideal platforms for on-skin and implantable electronic devices. However, the development of SF-based electronics is still at a preliminary stage due to the SF film intrinsic brittleness as well as the solubility in water, which prevent the fabrication of SF-based electronics through traditional techniques. In this article, a flexible and stretchable silver nanofibers (Ag NFs)/SF based electrode is synthesized through water-free procedures, which demonstrates outstanding performance, i.e., low sheet resistance (10.5 Ω sq-1 ), high transmittance (>90%), excellent stability even after bending cycles >2200 times, and good extensibility (>60% stretching). In addition, on the basis of such advanced (Ag NFs)/SF electrode, a flexible and tactile sensor is further fabricated, which can simultaneously detect pressure and strain signals with a large monitoring window (35 Pa-700 kPa). Besides, this sensor is air-permeable and inflammation-free, so that it can be directly laminated onto human skins for long-term health monitoring. Considering the biodegradable and skin-comfortable features, this sensor may become promising to find potential applications in on-skin or implantable health-monitoring devices.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and feasibility of a modified poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) atrial septal defect (ASD) occluder. METHODS: Forty-five piglets were divided into two groups: an experimental group (n = 27) and a control group (n = 18). The experimental group underwent percutaneous implantation of a modified PLLA ASD device while the control group underwent percutaneous implantation of a widely used metal ASD device. X-ray imaging, transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), electrocardiogram (ECG), histopathology and electron microscopic examination were performed at 7 days, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after implantation. RESULTS: Twenty-seven experimental piglets and 18 control piglets were all successfully implanted with modified biodegradable and metal ASD devices, respectively. While both devices exhibited very good occluding effects, the modified PLLA ASD devices were completely endothelialized at 3 months after implantation, and the endothelialization appeared to be more complete compared to the control group. Degradation of the PLLA devices was noted at 12 months follow-up with no loss of integrity at the atrial septum. CONCLUSION: This animal model with implanting of the occluders was effective and not associated with complications. The modified PLLA ASD devices are more controllable and practical than our previous devices. The implanted devices demonstrated good endothelialization and degradability in short and moderate term follow-up. Long-term studies are now underway to further evaluate the biodegradability of this novel device.

Recently, an increasing number of researchers have begun to focus on developing nonfullerene acceptors, so it is very important to synthesize new polymers that are compatible with nonfullerene acceptors. Besides, wide- or medium-bandgap polymer donors could be better to match narrow nonfullerene acceptors. The design of medium-bandgap (MBG) polymer donors and their application in organic photovoltaics (OPVs) play an important part in the improvement of OPV device performance. This review summarizes the photovoltaic performance of MBG polymers that have been reported during the last decade. Furthermore, their structure-property relationships and device performance are discussed. On the basis of analyzing many polymer structures, guidance toward the design of novel photovoltaic materials might be helpful to understand the basic OPV mechanism and the path towards commercialization.

Lysozyme, an important antibacterial protein, is an enzyme that cleaves the glycosidic bond between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine of peptidoglycan in cell walls. The novel lysozyme was purified and characterized from Chinese Lueyang black-bone silky fowl (CBSF) egg white, and its N-terminal amino acid sequence, enzymatic properties, and antibacterial activity were investigated. The CBSF lysozyme was purified using adsorption chromatography, ammonium sulfate precipitation, ion exchange chromatography, and size-exclusion chromatography. The purification fold and yield were 3.28 and 14.69%, respectively. The purified lysozyme was revealed as a single protein band with SDS-PAGE and had a MALDI-TOF/TOF molecular weight of 14305.57 Da and a final specific activity of 3.49 × 105 U/mg protein using Micrococcus lysodeikticus as a substrate. The optimum temperature and pH of the lysozyme were 50 °C and 6.0, respectively. The 20 N-terminal amino acid residues of the purified lysozyme were determined to be KVFGRCELAAAMKRHGLDNY, showing some homology to the N-terminus of the odontophoridae egg white lysozyme. The purified lysozyme exerted a potent antimicrobial activity toward indicator microorganisms, including Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. However, its inhibition of gram-negative activity was weaker than that of the Gram-positive bacteria.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the periodontal status and salivary microbial diversity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and to analyze the relationship between the composition of oral microflora in patients with RA and the incidence of rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: 24 patients who were diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis were enrolled in the experimental group, and 20 healthy persons were enrolled in the control group. The periodontal index was recorded and non-irritating saliva was collected. DNA was extracted and high-throughput sequencing was performed. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in periodontal indices between the RA group and the control group. After analysis of salivary microorganisms in RA patients and control group, there was no significant difference in salivary microbial diversity between RA patients and control group. At the phylum level, 13 phyla were found, including Firmicutes (30.2%), Proteobacteria (29.3%), Bacteroidetes (23.8%), Fusobacteria (7.3%), Actinobacteria (5.6%) as dominant bacteria. Bacteroidetes (P=0.04) and spirochoetes (P=0.01) were significantly higher in the RA group. A total of 144 genus were found, and 12 dominant genus were found. 11 genuses were found to have significant difference between the RA group and the control. At the genus level, Prevotella (P=0.03), Porphyromonas (P=0.005 7), Tannerella (P=0.001 9) and Treponema (P=0.010) were significantly higher in the RA group. Salivary microbial community similarity in the RA group was significantly higher than that in the control group. CONCLUSION: Compared with healthy people, RA patients had higher periodontal inflammation indices, but there was no statistical difference. The oral saliva of patients with rheumatoid arthritis has a unique microbial diversity structure. This result provides a new insight for understanding the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis.

Nanocarriers like PEGylated liposomes have achieved enhanced drug accumulation in tumors and reduced systemic side effects, but failed to actively release the carried drug into cancer cells. To obtain improved therapeutic efficacy, we designed a novel liposome that was inserted by the amphiphilic agent PEG-IR780-C13 (PIC-Lipo) and encapsulated therapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX), termed as DOX@PIC-Lipo. Upon NIR laser irradiation, the novel liposomes could generate hyperthermia and facilitate the release of encapsulated DOX from PIC-Lipo, which were confirmed by photothermal curves and the DOX release assay in vitro, respectively. In addition, the enhanced DOX release and sufficient hyperthermia have performed synergetic therapeutic efficacy both in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, DOX@PIC-Lipo might provide an active strategy to release the loaded drug for synergetic chemo-photothermal combined therapy.
