RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Biling Weitong Granules in the treatment of stomach ache disorder. Randomized controlled trial(RCT) of Biling Weitong Granules in the treatment of digestive diseases with stomach ache disorder as the primary symptom was retrieved from Chinese and English electronic databases and trial registration platforms from database inception to June 10, 2022. Two investigators conducted literature screening and data extraction according to the screening criteria. The Cochrane risk-of-bias tool(v 2.0) was used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. Analyses were performed using RevMan 5.4 and R 4.2.2, with summary estimates measured using fixed or random effects models. The primary outcome indicators were the visual analogue scale(VAS) scores and stomach ache disorder symptom scores. The secondary outcome indicators were clinical recovery rate, Helicobacter pylori(Hp) eradication rate, and adverse reaction/events. Twenty-seven RCTs were included with a sample size of 2 902 cases. Meta-analysis showed that compared with conventional western medicine treatments or placebo, Biling Weitong Granules could improve VAS scores(SMD=-1.90, 95%CI[-2.18,-1.61], P<0.000 01), stomach ache disorder symptom scores(SMD=-1.26, 95%CI[-1.71,-0.82], P<0.000 01), the clinical recovery rate(RR=1.85, 95%CI[1.66, 2.08], P<0.000 01), and Hp eradication rate(RR=1.28, 95%CI[1.20, 1.37], P<0.000 01). Safety evaluation revealed that the main adverse events in the Biling Weitong Granules included nausea and vomiting, rash, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and bitter mouth, and no serious adverse events were reported. Egger's test showed no statistical significance, indicating no publication bias. The results showed that Biling Weitong Granules in the treatment of digestive system diseases with stomach ache disorder as the primary symptom could improve the VAS scores and stomach ache disorder symptom scores of patients, relieve stomach ache disorder, and improve the clinical recovery rate and Hp eradication rate, with good safety and no serious adverse reactions. However, the quality of the original studies was low with certain limitations. Future studies should use unified and standardized detection methods and evaluation criteria of outcome indicators, pay attention to the rigor of study design and implementation, and highlight the clinical safety of the medicine to provide more reliable clinical evidence support for clinical application.

RESUMEN

AIM: Ergosterol is a plant sterol with anti-tumor and anti-angiogenic activities, but is poorly soluble. In this study, we attempted to enhance its anti-tumor action and oral bioavailability via poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticle encapsulation. METHODS: Ergosterol-loaded PLGA nanoparticles (NPs/Erg) were prepared using the emulsion/solvent evaporation technique. Their physicochemical properties were characterized, and their cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines was evaluated with MTT assay. The pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution of NPs/Erg were investigated in rats and mice, respectively. RESULTS: NPs/Erg were spherical in shape with a particle size of 156.9±4.8 nm and a Zeta potential of -19.27±1.13 mV, and had acceptable encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity. NPs/Erg exerted much stronger cytotoxicity against human cancer cells than the free ergosterol, and showed significantly reduced IC50 values (14.69±0.48 µg/mL in glioma U251 cells; 9.43±0.52 µg/mL in breast cancer MCF-7 cells; 4.70±0.41 µg/mL in hepatoma HepG2 cells). After oral administration of a single dose in rats, NPs/Erg displayed a prolonged plasma circulation with a 4.9-fold increase of oral bioavailability compared with the free ergosterol. After mice received NPs/Erg, the ergosterol in NPs/Erg was rapidly distributed in stomach, kidneys, liver, brain, spleen, and virtually non-existent in heart and lungs. The presence of NPs/Erg in brain was particularly improved compared with the free ergosterol. CONCLUSION: The PLGA nanoparticles serve as a promising carrier for the poorly soluble ergosterol and significantly improve its bioavailability, biodistribution and in vitro anti-tumor activities.

RESUMEN

Objective To observe distribution laws and features of syndrome types of Chinese medicine (CM) in hyperlipidemia patients of Han, Uyghur, Kazakh nationalities in Xinjiang Uyghur Auton- omous Region. Methods Using cluster random sampling, 1 410 hyperlipidemia patients (18 -70 years old ) were recruited from Urumqi, Turpan, Altay, Ili, Aksu, Hetian in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Re- gion. The general condition, susceptible factors, classification of blood lipids, complications, syndromes of CM, tongue figure, etc. clinical data were investigated using self-formulated Epidemiological Investiga- tion Questionnaire on Susceptible Factors in Different Nationalities of Hyperlipemia Patients in Xinjiang (abbreviated as Questionnaire thereafter). Factor analysis and cluster analysis were performed. Results Cronbach's coefficient for the 54 syndrome items in Questionnaire was 0.891, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) 0. 897, Sig <0.05 in Bartlett's sphericity test. Seventeen common factors were obtained using principal component analysis (PCA). Totally 54 common symptoms of hyperlipidemia were screened, which were then divided into 17 groups with 1 -6 symptoms in each group. F4 (soreness and weakness of waist and knees, sour pain in joints and muscles, body numbness, heavy body sensation, cold limbs), F5 (frequent and clear nocturia, dysuria,-dribble of urine, frequent urination at night), F10 (thirsty, no desire for water, tastelessness, hydroadipsia) , F12 (a white complexion with puffiness, hid- ing fever, hypoactive sexual desire) , and F17 (enuresis) were merged as Shen yang deficiency (SYD) ; F2 (fatigue, drowsiness, depression, spiritlessness, fatigue and disinclination to talk) and F15 (poor ap- petite) were merged as Pi-qi deficiency (PQD) ; F3 (dry mouth and dry pharynx, thirsty, propensity for water, bitter mouth, greasy mouth, stingy mouth, irritability and upset) and F16 (dark red tongue proper, greasy tongue fur) were merged as damp-heat trapped in Pi (DHTP). Results of cluster analysis showed that Pi-Shen deficiency (PSD) was most often seen in hyperlipidemia, and main syndrome types were sequenced from high to low as Pi-Shen deficiency type (46. 2%, 652/1 410) , blockage of cardiac vessels type ( 31. 1% , 438/1 410 ), phlegm and blood stasis internal resistance type ( 13. 3% , 187/1 410), Pi-deficiency induced damp abundance type (8. 3%, 123/1 410), Gan-Shen yin deficiency type (0. 7%, 10/1 410). Conclusions Deficiency syndrome was dominant in hyperlipidemia patients of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Phlegm turbidity, damp heat, and etc. were often complicated. The complex situation was manifested to be involved in multiple organs, qi-blood-fluid mixed disease.

RESUMEN

The utilization of biomass-based conductive polymer hydrogels in wearable electronics holds great promise for advancing performance and sustainability. An interpenetrating network of polyacrylamide/2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (PAM/HACC) was firstly obtained through thermal-initiation polymerization of AM monomers in the presence of HACC. The positively charged groups on HACC provide strong electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding with the PAM polymer chains, leading to improved mechanical strength and stability of the hydrogel network. Subsequently, the PAM/HACC networks served as the skeletons for the in-situ polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy), and then the resulting conductive hydrogel demonstrated stable electromagnetic shielding performance (40 dB), high sensitivity for strain sensing (gauge factor = 2.56). Moreover, the incorporation of quaternary ammonium chitosan into PAM hydrogels enhances their antimicrobial activity, making them more suitable for applications in bacterial contamination or low-temperature environments. This conductive hydrogel, with its versatility and excellent mechanical properties, shows great potential in applications such as electronic skin and flexible/wearable electronics.

RESUMEN

As the predominant pest of alfalfa, Odontothrips loti Haliday causes great damages over the major alfalfa-growing regions of China. The characteristics of strong mobility and fecundity make them develop rapidly in the field and hard to be controlled. There is a shortage of bioinformation and limited genomic resources available of O. loti for us to develop novel pest management strategies. In this study, we constructed a chromosome-level reference genome assembly of O. loti with a genome size of 346.59 Mb and scaffold N50 length of 18.52 Mb, anchored onto 16 chromosomes and contained 20128 genes, of which 93.59% were functionally annotated. The results of 99.20% complete insecta_odb10 genes in BUSCO analysis, 91.11% short reads mapped to the ref-genome, and the consistent tendency among the thrips in the distribution of gene length reflects the quality of genome. Our study provided the first report of genome for the genus Odontothrips, which offers a genomic resource for further investigations on evolution and molecular biology of O. loti, contributing to pest management.

RESUMEN

Flame retardants containing biomass receive growing interest in environmental friendliness and sustainability but usually face the low flame-retardant efficiency and deterioration on mechanical property of matrix. Herein, a calcium gluconate-based flame retardant (CG@APP) was chemically prepared using calcium gluconate (CG) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) via ion exchange reaction, and enabled the excellent fire safety and mechanical enhancement for epoxy resin (EP). The resulted EP composites containing 6 wt% CG@APP (EP/CG@APP6) exhibited V-0 ratings in UL-94 test. Furthermore, with respect to EP/APP6, the peak of heat release rate (pHRR) and peak of smoke production rate (pSPR) of EP/CG@APP6 decreased by 70.5 % and 50.0 %, respectively. The well synergistic flame-retardant mechanism of CG@APP between gaseous and solid phases was revealed to generate denser and more continuous charring residuals, which could do well work on insulation for heat transfer and fuel diffusion. In addition, the shell rich in hydroxyl group and Ca2+ on the surface of CG@APP well enhanced the interface compatibility through the hydrogen bond and coordinated bond, thus the tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength of EP/CG@APP6 increased by 18.2 %, 4.5 % and 9.1 % compared with pure EP, respectively. This work provided a simple and sustainable way to construct excellent fire-safety composites.

RESUMEN

Weak antigens represented by MUC1 are poorly immunogenic, which greatly constrains the development of relevant vaccines. Herein, we developed a multifunctional lipidated protein as a carrier, in which the TLR1/2 agonist Pam3CSK4 was conjugated to the N-terminus of MUC1-loaded carrier protein BSA through pyridoxal 5'-phosphate-mediated transamination reaction. The resulting Pam3CSK4-BSA-MUC1 conjugate was subsequently incorporated into liposomes, which biomimics the membrane structure of tumor cells. The results indicated that this lipidated protein carrier significantly enhanced antigen uptake by APCs and obviously augmented the retention of the vaccine at the injection site. Compared with the BSA-MUC1 and BSA-MUC1 + Pam3CSK4 groups, Pam3CSK4-BSA-MUC1 evoked 22- and 11-fold increases in MUC1-specific IgG titers. Importantly, Pam3CSK4-BSA-MUC1 elicited robust cellular immunity and significantly inhibited tumor growth. This is the first time that lipidated protein was constructed to enhance antigen immunogenicity, and this universal carrier platform exhibits promise for utilization in various vaccines, holding the potential for further clinical application.

RESUMEN

Non-viral gene vectors play an important role in the development of gene therapy. In this report, different hydrophobic chains were introduced into low molecular weight (LMW) PEI-based biodegradable oligomers to form a series of lipopolymers (LPs), and their structure-activity relationships were studied. Results revealed that the nine polymers can condense plasmid DNA well to form nanoparticles with appropriate sizes (120-250 nm) and positive zeta-potentials (+25-40 V). In vitro experiments were carried out and it was found that LP2 showed much higher transfection efficiency both in the presence and in the absence of serum under the polymer/DNA weight ratio of 0.8 in A549 cells.

RESUMEN

The inefficient treatment using protein-based nanovaccines is largely attributed to their inadequate immunogenicity. Herein, we developed a novel fluoropolymer (PF) via ring-opening polymerization and constructed a fluoropolymer-based nanovaccine for tumor immunotherapy. Due to the existence of fluoroalkyl chains, PF not only played a crucial role in tumor antigen delivery but also exhibited a remarkable adjuvant effect in enhancing the immunogenicity of nanovaccines. The nanovaccines formed by mixing PF with a model antigen ovalbumin (OVA) enhanced the uptake of antigen proteins by dendritic cells (DCs) and promoted the maturation and antigen presentation of DCs. Compared with free OVA, PF/OVA showed better efficacy in both pre-cancer prevention and tumor treatment. Furthermore, the proportion of CD4+ T and CD8+ T cells was significantly increased in lymph nodes and tumors of mice immunized with PF/OVA. Additionally, there was a great enhancement in the levels of key anti-tumor cytokines (TNF-α and IFN-γ) in the serum of the PF/OVA immunized mice. Our research has shown that fluoropolymer PF applied as a protein vector and adjuvant has great potential for the development of nanovaccines with robust immunogenicity.

RESUMEN

TEMPO-oxidized nanofibrillated cellulose (ONFC) with charged carboxyl groups is introduced for the efficient exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 /graphene composites. As an effective dispersant agent, ONFC can be easily absorbed between the adjacent layers, so as to prevent the accumulation of the exfoliated nanosheets. With the assistance of charged ONFC, the exfoliated MoS2 /graphene is gradually increased in the aqueous dispersions with the elongated sonication time. After dewatering, self-standing MoS2 /Graphene/ONFC/CNTs composite films are rationally constructed using ONFC as flexible fibrous skeleton, and CNTs/graphene as 1D/2D interpenetrating electrical networks. Ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets anchored on the 1D/2D heterogeneous networks is directly acted as an ideal paper-anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) without using traditional metallic current collector. The self-standing flexible electrode materials based on natural cellulose will promote the future green electronics with high flexibility, miniaturization, and increased portability.

RESUMEN

This study evaluated the toxicity of Cr(VI) to microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, and its removal by continuous microalgae cultivation in membrane photobioreactor (MPBR). Batch cultivation in photobioreactors showed that low concentration of Cr(VI) (0.5 and 1.0 mg L-1) stimulated the growth of C. vulgaris, while 2.0 and 5.0 mg L-1 Cr(VI) in the wastewater significantly inhibited the growth of C. vulgaris. Superoxide dismutase and catalase activities that represented cellular antioxidant capacity significantly increased at 0.5 and 1.0 mg L-1 Cr(VI), and then gradually decreased with the continuous increase of Cr(VI) concentration. The content of malondialdehyde, which represents the degree of cellular oxidative damage, increased with the increase of Cr(VI) concentration and reached the peak value at 2.0 mg L-1 Cr(VI). C. vulgaris was then cultured in MPBR equipped with hollow-fiber ultrafiltration membrane module to achieve continuous removal of Cr from wastewater. With the in-situ solid-liquid separation function of the membrane module, solid retention time (SRT) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of the reactor could be controlled separately. Experimental results showed that both SRT and HRT had significant effects on the algal biomass production and pollutants removal. During the continuous operation, MPBR achieved a maximum total Cr reduction of 50.0% at HRT of 3-day and SRT of 40-day, and a maximum volumetric removal rate of total Cr of 0.21 mg L-1 d-1 at HRT of 2-day and SRT of 40-day.

RESUMEN

This study was to investigate the effects of in vitro simulated saliva-gastrointestinal digestion on the physicochemical properties and bioactivities of okra polysaccharides (OPS). Results showed that the digestibilities of OPS were about 5.1%, 37.5%, and 41.3% after saliva digestion (SD), saliva-gastric digestion (SGD), and saliva-gastrointestinal digestion (SGID), respectively. The SGID significantly changed the physicochemical properties of OPS, such as total uronic acids, total flavonoids, monosaccharide composition, rheological properties, and molecular weights (Mw). Especially, Mw changes resulted in the breakdown of glycosidic bonds during SGD, and the degradation of OPS during SGID was mainly caused by disrupting aggregates. Furthermore, the bioactivities of OPS were also affected by SGID. After SGID, OPS still possessed strong antioxidant activities, binding capacities, and prebiotic activities, but the α-glucosidase inhibitory effect was obviously decreased. Overall, results can provide valuable and scientific support on the oral administration of OPS as functional foods and medicines in the future.

RESUMEN

The plants of genus Toona are well known for diverse limonoid secondary metabolites, while polyacetylenes are rarely found from Toona species. In this work, six new polyacetylenes toonasindiynes A-F (1-6) and six known analogues (7-12) were isolated from the root bark of Toona sinensis. Their structures and absolute configurations were elucidated by HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis, modified Mosher's method, and biosynthetic consideration. These polyacetylenes share the same 4,6-diyne moiety with different side chain length and different oxidation degree. Bioactivity screening revealed the cytotoxic activity of 3, 5, 9, and 11 against U2OS cells, and the inhibitory effects on nitric oxide (NO) production of 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, and 11 in lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 cells.

RESUMEN

A facile method is developed for the preparation of high-quality, water-soluble, and near-infrared (NIR)-emitting CdSeTe alloyed quantum dots (AQdots) with L-cysteine as the capping agent. By changing the size and the composition of AQdots the photoluminescent quantum yield (QY) can reach as high as 53% and the emission color can be tuned between visible and NIR regions (580-814 nm). Furthermore, the prepared NIR-emitting AQdots have been successfully applied for HL-60 cell imaging and glucose and cholesterol assay, which demonstrates the great potential of the AQdots for biological applications.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of nonsurgical periodontal therapy on the serum interleukin 6 (IL-6) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and on the carotid artery in rats with chronic periodontitis (CP) and with or without hyperlipidemia (HL). METHODS: A total of 29 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups: group A (CP, n = 14) and B (CP + HL, n = 15), and subjected to the corresponding treatment. Groups A and B were further divided into groups A1/B1 (without periodontal interventions) and A2/B2 (with periodontal interventions). The serum IL-6 and hsCRP levels were evaluated before periodontal intervention and at 1, 3, 5, and 7 weeks after periodontal intervention. The rats were euthanised 8 weeks after the periodontal intervention and the histopathologic changes in the carotid artery were observed. RESULTS: The serum hsCRP and serum IL-6 levels in groups A1 and B1 were elevated with time; they were significantly higher in group B1 than in group A1 (P < 0.001) at all time points. The hsCRP and IL-6 levels in groups A2 and B2 increased with time and reached the maximum level 1 week after the second intervention, and then gradually decreased. Atherosclerotic plaques, fibrous cap, and calcium salt deposits were apparent in the rats of group B1, whereas no obvious atherosclerotic changes were observed in the rats of groups A2 and B2. CONCLUSION: Periodontal interventions resulted in acute, short-term systemic inflammation. However, it was beneficial in long-term as it improved the carotid artery integrity.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of periodontal non-surgical treatment on serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) expression and carotid vascular wall in a rat model of chronic periodontitis (CP) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: Twenty-eight 6-week-old SD rats were randomly divided into group A (control group, 7 rats) and group B (T2DM+CP group, 21 rats). According to different intervention measures, group B was randomly subdivided into B1 (natural process), B2 (periodontal mechanical treatment), and B3 (periodontal mechanical treatment + 2% minocycline hydrochloride + systemic metronidazole plus amoxicillin). Serum IL-6 was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and carotid tissue was observed under light microscopy after hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. RESULTS: The carotid artery wall of group A was normal. In group B1, the endothelial cells disappeared, the elastic fibers of the middle membrane were disordered, the local necrosis of smooth muscle tissue was amorphous particles, a small amount of calcium salt was deposited, and the wall thickening was obvious. The endothelial cells in groups B2 and B3 disappeared, and the smooth muscle cells in the middle membrane underwent denaturation. No significant thickening of the vessel wall was noted. The serum IL-6 level in group B1 continually increased with time, and it was higher than that in group A (P<0.001). The IL-6 levels of groups B2 and B3 peaked a week after the first intervention. Subsequently, IL-6 levels gradually decreased. At the last point (five weeks after the second intervention ), the IL-6 levels of groups B2 and B3 were significantly lower than that of group B1 (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: For rats with periodontitis and diabetes, periodontal mechanical treatment may elevate serum IL-6 levels in the short term but might reduce the whole inflammatory state in the long term. Thus, this treatment might be valuable to the improvement of vascular disease. The adjunctive benefits of systemic metronidazole and amoxicillin in non-surgical periodontal therapy are decreased serum IL-6 expression and normal carotid artery.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of nifedipine on periodontal ligament remodeling during orthodontic tooth movement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into an orthodontic group and groups that received either 10 mg/kg or 40 mg/kg nifedipine (NIF). Immunohistochemical staining and image analysis were used to investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, -10, -13 and collagen-I in PDL, and maxillary 1st molar displacement was measured. RESULTS: Expression of MMP-1, -10, and -13 was significantly decreased in both NIF groups, while collagen-I expression was markedly increased. NIF significantly inhibited tooth movement. CONCLUSIONS: NIF affects the expression of MMP-1, -10, -13 and collagen-I and tooth movement induced by orthodontic force in rats, thus indicating that calcium channels might be important in mediating PDL remodeling.
