RESUMEN

Galvanic replacement reaction was used in the synthesis of bimetallic gold-silver alloy nanoparticles (Au-Ag NPs), where pre-synthesized Ag nanoparticles-polyvinylpyrrolidone (AgNPs-PVP) were used to reduce the aryldiazonium tetrachloroaurate(III) salt in water. TEM images and EDS elemental analysis showed the formation of spherical Au-Ag NPs with sizes of 12.8 ± 4.9 nm and 25.6 ± 14.4 nm for corresponding Au-Ag ratios and termed as Au0.91Ag0.09 and Au0.79Ag0.21, respectively, with different concentrations of the gold precursor. The hydrodynamic sizes measured using dynamic light scattering are 46.4 nm and 74.8 nm with corresponding zeta potentials of - 44.56 and - 25.09 mV in water, for Au0.91Ag0.09 and Au0.79Ag0.21 respectively. Oxidative leachability of Ag ion studies from the starting AgNPs-PVP in 1 M NaCl showed a significant decrease in the plasmon peak after 8 h, indicating the complete dissolution of Ag ions, however, there is enhanced oxidation resistivity of Ag from Au-Ag NPs even after 24 h. Electrochemical studies on glassy carbon electrodes displayed a low oxidation peak in aqueous solutions of 20 mM KCl at 0.16 V and KNO3 at 0.33 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE). We studied the antibacterial activity of Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, and gram-negative Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Our findings demonstrated superior antibacterial activity of Au-Ag NPs compared with AgNPs-PVP. Moreover, the nanoparticles inhibited the S. epidermidis biofilm formation.

Air pollutants generated from volatile toxic chemicals pose significant public health concerns. Density functional theory (DFT) computations were used in this research to explore the efficiency and mechanism of harmful gas sensing over the reduced graphene oxide-polypyrrole (rGO-PPy) composite. Volatile molecule sensing was investigated for the NH3, H2CO, CH3OH, and C2H5OH gas molecules over three PPy orientations on the rGO substrate. Results showed that PPy orientation over rGO plays a crucial role in the sensing efficiency of the investigated gas molecules. The rGO-PPy composite, with PPy in a vertical orientation, demonstrated higher stability and enhanced sensing than other orientations. The results indicate that the strong hydrogen bonding of NH3 and CH3OH with both PPy and rGO significantly enhanced the sensing of these gas molecules on rGO by influencing the charge transfer with adsorption energy values of - 0.84 and - 0.92 eV, respectively. The lack of a direct hydrogen bonding with rGO and the weak hydrogen bonding with PPy caused a weak adsorption of H2CO and C2H5OH over rGO as indicated by the adsorption energy values of - 0.60 and - 0.78 eV, respectively. Selectivity analysis for the NH3 and C2H5OH gas molecules showed that NH3 can maintain hydrogen bonding with PPy in the presence of C2H5OH while C2H5OH cannot sustain this interaction. This study highlights the importance of the structural and electronic properties of the rGO-PPy composite in volatile pollutant sensing, providing insights for designing high-performance gas sensors.

BACKGROUND: Demineralization of the enamel surface, which appears as white spot lesions during and after removal of the fixed orthodontic appliance, is the most common disadvantage of the orthodontic treatment course. Using the remineralizing agents during and after orthodontic treatment helps to avoid those enamel defects. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to assess the remineralizing effect of the chicken eggshell powder on the demineralized enamel surfaces after debonding the orthodontic bracket system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current study was performed on 80 prepared premolar crowns embedded into acrylic molds. The samples were prepared to receive routine steps of the bonding process for the bracket system. The paste of the chicken eggshell powder was added to the samples after the debonding process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) were used to evaluate the remineralization effect of the chicken eggshell powder. Also, the Vickers microhardness tester was used to assess the enamel surface microhardness. RESULTS: It was found that the mean value of the Ca/P ratio for the samples before bonding of the orthodontic bracket system was (4.17 ± 2.2). This value significantly decreased to (2 ± 1.3) after debonding of the orthodontic bracket system and then showed a significant increase to (4.79 ± 2.65) after remineralization. These results were assured by the values of the Vickers microhardness tester. CONCLUSION: The chicken eggshell powder has an excellent remineralization effect for the demineralized enamel surface after debonding the orthodontic enamel surface.

INTRODUCTION: In the majority of orthodontic premolar extraction cases, the canine retraction phase is the most laborious procedure. This randomized clinical trial aimed to assess the effect of single versus repeated micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) during orthodontic canine retraction. METHODS: In this split-mouth study, two equal groups of 18 patients who required maxillary first premolar extractions and fixed orthodontic therapy were randomly assigned (n=9). In Group I, MOPs were only performed once on one site before retraction, whereas in Group II, MOPs were performed on one site repeatedly once a month for four months. In both groups, the contralateral control sites received no MOPs. The canines were retracted using mini-screws and closed-coil nickel-titanium springs. Using the patients' 3D models, the primary outcome measure at four months was the amount of orthodontic canine distal movement. The amount of anchorage loss (AL), degree of molar rotation (MR) and canine rotation (CR), and degree of canine tipping (CT) were measured as the secondary outcomes. The comparison of mean changes in the primary and secondary outcomes between the groups was done using the independent sample t-test (p<0.05). RESULTS: The rate of canine retraction, degree of CT, and rotation were not significantly different between the two groups (p>0.05). Additionally, there were no statistically significant variations in the maxillary first MR and the degree of AL (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: When maxillary canine retraction was performed with a single and repeated regimen of MOPs, comparable levels of distal CR and tipping were observed, along with an identical minimal degree of MR and AL.

The dissemination of multi-drug resistant (MDR) superbugs in hospital environments, communities and food animals and the very dynamic bacterial mutation frequency require the development of prolonged therapeutic strategies to gain mastery over antibiotic resistance. A AuNP-lysozyme nanoantibacterial was fabricated by the conjugation of AuNPs-C6H4-4-COOH with lysozyme via green reduction of aryldiazonium gold(iii) salt [HOOC-4-C6H4N[triple bond, length as m-dash]N]AuCl4. Results from molecular docking calculations aimed at revealing the binding mode of benzoic acid with the lysozyme structure clearly showed the lowest energy conformation with benzoic acid bound in the deep buried hydrophobic cavity of the protein active site through strong hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, thus validating the experimental outcomes of the current study which also exhibited the binding of -COOH functional groups in the interior of the protein structure. The superiority of the lysozyme bioconjugate against superbugs was demonstrated by the enhanced and broadened lysozyme antibacterial activities of 98-99% against extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli and imipenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates and a selection of Gram-negative and Gram-positive standard ATCC strains. Selective toxicity against bacteria was confirmed by the high viability of HeLa and fibroblast cell lines and the outstanding hemocompatibility at the minimum bacterial inhibitory concentrations (MICs). Turbidimetric enzyme kinetic assay showed the enhancement of the lysozyme hydrolytic activity by gold nanoparticles on the Micrococcus lysodeikticus bacterial substrate. Using gel electrophoresis, the induced cell wall breakdown was confirmed by detecting the leaked-out bacterial genomic DNA. The integrity and morphology changes of the E. coli bacteria were investigated using a scanning electron microscope after one hour of contact with the lysozyme-gold bioconjugate. The antibacterial functionalities showed little or no damage to healthy human cells and can be applied to wound dressings and medical devices.

The success of pulpotomy of young permanent teeth depends on the proper selection of dressing materials. This study aimed to evaluate the histological and histomorphometric response of dentin-pulp complex to the enamel matrix derivative (Emdogain(®) gel) compared to that of calcium hydroxide when used as a pulp dressing in immature young permanent dogs' teeth. Dentin-like tissues bridging the full width of the coronal pulp at the interface between the injured and healthy pulp tissues were seen after 1 month in both groups. With time, the dentin bridge increased in thickness for calcium hydroxide but disintegrated and fully disappeared for Emdogain-treated group. Progressive inflammation and total pulp degeneration were only evident with Emdogain-treated group. The root apices of Emdogain-treated teeth became matured and closed by cementum that attached to new alveolar bone by a well-oriented periodontal ligament. In young permanent dentition, Emdogain could be a good candidate for periodontium but not dentino-pulpal complex regeneration.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a commonly used surgical technique for oropharyngeal reconstruction in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This procedure can be done either through the classic or the laser-assisted uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (LAUP) technique. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of classic UPPP and LAUP on acoustics of voice and speech nasalance, and to compare the effect of each operation on these two domains. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 27 patients with a mean age of 46 years. All patients were diagnosed with OSA based on polysomnographic examination. Patients were divided into two groups according to the type of surgical procedure. Fifteen patients underwent classic UPPP, whereas 12 patients were subjected to LAUP. A full assessment was done for all patients preoperatively and postoperatively, including auditory perceptual assessment (APA) of voice and speech, objective assessment using acoustic voice analysis and nasometry. RESULTS: Auditory perceptual assessment of speech and voice, acoustic analysis of voice and nasometric analysis of speech did not show statistically significant differences between the preoperative and postoperative evaluations in either group (P>.05). CONCLUSION: The results of this study demonstrated that in patients with OSA, the surgical technique, whether classic UPPP or LAUP, does not have significant effects on the patients' voice quality or their speech outcomes.
