OBJECTIVES: For the first time in history, the COVID-19 pandemic required students at The University of Texas School of Dentistry (UTSD) to move to remote education. Based on a literature review, it was assumed that younger generations of students would prefer virtual teaching models over in-classroom formats. The purpose of this study is to assess students' perspectives of remote learning during COVID-19 in dental education relative to their generation and programme. METHODS: An electronic survey was administered to all UTSD dental and dental hygiene students via Qualtrics. The survey collected information on demographics, pre-pandemic learning preferences, remote learning experiences during the pandemic, and a free response section. Descriptive statistics and Fisher's exact test were used to analyse data. RESULTS: The survey received a 60% response rate (n = 290). Over 95% of respondents belonged to Generations Y and Z. There were no significant differences in responses between generations. However, significant differences in responses between programmes arose with more dental hygiene students agreed that they liked learning in a classroom setting compared to dental students (p < 0.01). Significantly more dental students agreed that they stayed organized, were less stressed, and felt that the transition to online learning was easy compared to dental hygiene students (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Although the majority of students surveyed belong to Generations Y and Z, there are still preferences for traditional, in-person learning. Both cohorts recognized the benefits and challenges of distance learning, and the findings from this study shed light on how students are handling remote learning in dental education.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate periodontal practice methods of dentists and dental hygienists to compare their knowledge and treatment approach in managing periodontal disease. METHODS: An electronic survey was designed to assess and capture three aspects of data: (a) knowledge of periodontics; (b) practice approaches in non-surgical periodontal therapy; and (c) factors affecting clinical care. The survey was distributed to dentists and dental hygienists who graduated from the same dental school within 5 years (2012-2016). Results were analysed by chi-square test, Fisher's exact test and logistic regression model. RESULTS: Out of total 117 participants, 111 of them reported their profession (n = 77 in the dental programme, n = 34 in the dental hygiene programme). The results showed no statistical difference in basic periodontal knowledge between dentists and dental hygienists (P = .12). Only 13% of the surveyed population identified appropriate recall intervals for periodontal maintenance and more dental hygienists reported periodontal re-evaluations being performed within their offices compared with dentists (91% vs 70%, P = .02). Almost half of the participants who reportedly performed periodontal re-evaluations (46%) charged for the re-evaluation procedure, despite it not being covered by dental insurance. More hygienists reported being familiar with and performing adjunct therapy compared to dentists in the study (P < .01). CONCLUSION: In general, dentists and hygienists in the study were found to have similar periodontal knowledge and practice approaches. However, differences in performing periodontal re-evaluation and adjunct therapy were significant. Further studies are needed to investigate clinical barriers that impact evidence-based periodontal care.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to assess the applicability of digital intraoral scanning in dental hygiene education and compare the quality, efficiency, and ease of use to conventional impression techniques. METHODS: Twenty-eight first-year dental hygiene students (DH1) at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry (UTSD) participated in this 2022 study. Each student participated in two 4-h lab sessions. Students took traditional alginate impressions and digital intraoral scans using Planmeca Romexis on standardized teeth during the first and second sessions. Both techniques were assessed by faculty for quality and efficiency using a standardized rubric. Participants completed a post-survey providing insight into their perceptions of both techniques and ease of use. RESULTS: The study had 100% participation in the lab sessions and survey responses (N = 28). The results showed digital scanning produced a statistically higher quality product than conventional alginate impressions (p = 0.023). The study found no statistical difference in the efficiency between the two methods. The majority of students (82%) agreed that digital intraoral scanning was easy to use (p = 0.001), and 89% agreed they would use digital intraoral scanning in clinical courses to help with patient care (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION: In this study, dental hygiene students with limited clinical experience learned new technology and used it to produce quality impressions compared to the conventional technique, indicating the value of introducing digital dentistry early in dental hygiene education.

The impact of multiple reuse on the alterations in internal threads of four different implant analogous composed of different materials (stainless steel (SS), aluminum (Al), titanium (Ti), and zirconia (Zr) by utilizing two die materials at different time durations is of interest to dentists. The spacing between the threads was measured using the impressions created for the interior threads of implant analogs, or replicas by stereomicroscope set to x50 at 0th, 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th interval. It was observed that there was decrease in distance between threads 1-2 as the increasing reuse at increasing time intervals in all implants analogs. However the decrease in distance between threads was low in Titanium implants analogs followed by Zircona implant analogs and the decrease was maximum in aluminum implants analogs followed by SS implant analogs. When there was evaluation of distance between threads 3-4 then it was observed that there was reduced decrease in distance between threads 3-4 as compared to threads 1-2 n all implant analogs. Similarly the reduction in distance between threads 5-6 was lesser as compared to threads 1-2 and threads 3-4. There was decrease in distance between threads 1-2 as the increasing reuse at increasing time intervals in all implants analogs. However, the reduction in distance between threads was lowest in Titanium implants analogs followed by Zircona implant analogs.

Introduction Zirconia is a widely used restorative material in dentistry due to its superior aesthetic and mechanical properties. The oral cavity is a complex ecosystem with various components, which affect the teeth, as well as artificial restorative materials. Various personal and professional interventions carried out can severely affect the properties of restorative materials, thus altering the longevity of the prosthesis; 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel is one such professionally applied topical fluoride agent used to prevent caries. The interaction of this APF gel with highly aesthetic restorative material such as zirconia crowns is unknown. Objective The objective of this study is the evaluation of the surface deterioration of prefabricated zirconia crowns on exposure to deionised water and 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel with field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and mass loss analysis. Material and method Sixty prefabricated paediatric zirconia crowns were taken, 10 samples were immersed in deionised water, 40 samples were immersed in 1.23% APF gel and 10 samples were used as control. Surface morphology and mass loss analysis were carried out at time intervals of four minutes, 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours using FE-SEM and digital weighing machine. Results No visual change was observed in the samples immersed in deionised water at the time interval of 72 hours. There was a marked visual change in samples immersed in 1.23% APF gel at the time interval of four minutes to 72 hours; this change involved a loss of gloss to the appearance of chalkiness. FE-SEM analysis for the control group and samples immersed in deionised water showed a smooth, continuous, undisrupted top layer, while samples immersed in 1.23% APF gel showed changes ranging from surface etching, to pinhole porosities, to crack formation and disruption of the surface depending upon the exposure time. Conclusions On the immersion of zirconia crowns in an aqueous acidic medium of 1.23% APF gel, the crowns showed flaws, imperfections and uneven superficial layers. It has been observed that surface grains are disrupted and micropores have been formed. This degraded superficial surface when undergoes cyclic mechanical loading can accelerate the ageing phenomenon of zirconia. Mechanical forces along with a dynamic electrochemical environment can degrade the material properties of zirconia.

Background: In 2017, the American Academy of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology updated the classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions. The goal of the present crossover study was to develop straightforward, illustrative flowcharts and determine their impact on the accuracy and speed of diagnosing periodontal conditions by predoctoral dental students (DS) and dental hygiene students (DHS). Methods: Two flowcharts (a decision-tree flowchart and one based on the periodontal disease/condition entity) were developed using updated diagnostic determinants proposed by the 2017 classification. A total of 26 second-, third-, and fourth-year DS (DS2, DS3, and DS4, respectively) and second-year DHS (DHS2) took a mock examination consisting of 10 periodontal clinical cases. The participants first diagnosed periodontal conditions using only their curricula-based knowledge (control) and then using the flowcharts (test). They also completed an optional post-examination questionnaire to provide feedback on the flowcharts. Statistical significance was detected at p ≤ 0.05. Results: Combined test groups had significantly higher accuracy in diagnosing periodontal conditions compared to controls (73.5% vs 50.0%, respectively), with the most substantial improvement in DS2 (66.3% vs 30%, respectively) and DHS2 (70.0% vs 41.4%, respectively). Combined test groups also completed the examination more quickly compared to controls (14.92 vs 20.85 minutes, respectively). The participants provided positive feedback and constructive criticism on the flowcharts, and also suggested converting them into application software. Conclusion: The flowcharts significantly improved the accuracy of diagnosing periodontal conditions in academic settings, especially among junior, less experienced participants.
Contexte: En 2017, l'Académie américaine de parodontologie et la Fédération européenne de parodontologie ont mis à jour leur classification des maladies et des affections parodontales et péri-implantaires. L'objectif de la présente étude croisée était de créer des organigrammes simples et représentatifs et de déterminer leur effet sur l'exactitude et la vitesse de diagnostic des affections parodontales par les étudiants en médecine dentaire, prédoctorat(ÉD) et les étudiants en hygiène dentaire (ÉHD). Méthodes: Deux organigrammes (un organigramme d'arbre décisionnel et un graphique basé sur l'entité de la maladie ou de l'affection parodontale) ont été élaborés à l'aide des déterminants diagnostiques actualisés, comme proposés dans la classification de 2017. Un total de 26 étudiants de deuxième, troisième et quatrième année (ÉD2, ÉD3 et ÉD4, respectivement) en médecine dentaire et des étudiants de deuxième année en hygiène dentaire (ÉHD2) ont passé un examen fictif portant sur 10 cas cliniques parodontaux. Les participants ont d'abord diagnostiqué les affections parodontales en utilisant seulement leurs connaissances fondées sur leur programme d'études (témoins) et en utilisant ensuite les organigrammes (tests). Ils ont aussi rempli un questionnaire optionnel après avoir passé l'examen afin de fournir des commentaires sur les organigrammes. La signification statistique a été décelée à p ≤ 0,05. Résultats: Les groupes de tests combinés avaient une exactitude considérablement plus élevée dans le diagnostic des affections parodontales par rapport aux groupes témoins (73,5 % contre 50,0 %, respectivement), et l'amélioration la plus importante était chez les ÉD2 (66,3 % contre 30 %, respectivement) et les ÉHD2 (70,0 % contre 41,4 %, respectivement). Les groupes de tests combinés ont aussi terminé l'examen plus rapidement par rapport aux groupes témoins (14,92 contre 20,85 minutes, respectivement). Les participants ont fourni des commentaires positifs et des critiques constructives sur les organigrammes et ont aussi suggéré de les convertir en logiciels d'application. Recent efforts have demonstrated that the morphology of ceramics can be manipulated to control both their deformation mechanism and mechanical performance. However, precise control of the ceramic nanostructure is still difficult to achieve. Biotemplating, leading to biomorphic materials, provides a facile route to manipulate the nanostructure of the resulting materials, and the use of melanin as a coating provides a new route to biotemplated materials. Melanin is underutilized for structural materials partly due to the cost of procuring it from natural sources and the inability to control the shape and sizes of melanin particles. Taking a combined synthetic biology and chemical synthesis approach, we report the melanization of Escherichia coli and its subsequent silanization and functionalization with preceramic polymers to make novel biomorphic silicon-based ceramic materials. Graft-to and graft-from reactions were used to append preceramic polymers to the melanin, followed by pyrolysis under argon. Samples were analyzed by FTIR, XRD, XPS, and TEM and found to retain the shape and size of the original cells with high fidelity. The homogeneity of coverage and yield of the resulting ceramic materials depended on the type of grafting reaction. This work provides a promising proof-of-concept that bacterial-templated ceramics can be readily made and opens a host of possibilities for further studies and applications.

Aim To calculate fallow time (FT) required following dental aerosol generating procedures (AGPs) in both a dental hospital (mechanically ventilated) and primary care (non-mechanically ventilated). Secondary outcomes were to identify spread and persistence of aerosol in open clinics compared to closed surgeries (mechanically ventilated environment), and identify if extraoral scavenging (EOS) reduces FT and production of aerosol.Methods In vitro simulation of fast handpiece cavity preparations using a manikin was conducted in a mechanically and non-mechanically ventilated environment using Optical Particle Sizer and NanoScan at baseline, during the procedure and fallow period.Results AGPs carried out in the non-mechanically, non-ventilated environment failed to achieve baseline particle levels after one hour. In contrast, when windows were opened after AGPs, there was an immediate reduction in all particle sizes. In mechanically ventilated environments, the baseline levels of particles were very low and particle count returned to baseline within ten minutes following the AGP. There was no detectable difference between particles in mechanically ventilated open bays and closed surgeries. The effect of the EOS on reducing the particle count was greater in the non-mechanically ventilated environment; additionally, it also reduced the spikes in particle counts in mechanically ventilated environments.Conclusion High-efficiency particulate, air-filtered mechanical ventilation, along with mitigation (high-volume suction), resulted in reduction of fallow time (ten minutes). Non-ventilated rooms failed to reach baseline level even after one hour of fallow time. There was no difference in particle counts in open bays or closed surgeries in mechanically ventilated settings with an extraoral suction device reducing particulate spikes. This study confirms that AGPs are not recommended in dental surgeries where no ventilation is possible.

Introduction This study was conducted in light of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which brought UK dentistry to a standstill. The market has seen a recent influx of unproven extraoral scavengers (EOSs), which claim to reduce the risk of particulate spread.Aims To investigate the efficacy of a commercially available EOS device on contamination reduction during dental aerosol generating procedures (AGPs). The secondary aim was to investigate differences between open and closed dental operatories.Method Dental procedures were simulated on a dental manikin using citric acid (10%) added to the water lines with universal indicating paper (UIP) placed in strategic locations in the operatory, on the clinician and assistant. Chromatic change related to settling of splatter containing citric acid on the UIP was analysed to calculate percentage intensity of splatter contamination.Results EOSs resulted in 20% reduction in frequency and 75% reduction in mean intensity of contamination of operatory sites. There was a 33% and 76% reduction in mean intensity contamination for clinician and assistant, respectively. Use of rubber dam and four-handed dentistry resulted in further reduction.Discussion This exploratory study demonstrates contamination by splatter in a simulated dental setting. The concern in dentistry regarding aerosol requires further quantitative investigation of smaller particles.Conclusions The routine use of four-handed dentistry and rubber dam should continue where possible to maximise risk mitigation during AGPs. However, on the basis of our findings, the use of an EOS device can further mitigate the magnitude and concentration of splatter.

Introduction Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through aerosol has been suggested, particularly in the presence of highly concentrated aerosols in enclosed environments. It is accepted that aerosols are produced during a range of dental procedures, posing potential risks to both dental practitioners and patients. There has been little agreement concerning aerosol transmission associated with orthodontics and associated mitigation.Methods Orthodontic procedures were simulated in a closed side-surgery using a dental manikin on an acrylic model using composite-based adhesive. Adhesive removal representing debonding was undertaken using a 1:1 contra-angle handpiece (W&H Synea Vision WK-56 LT, Bürmoos, Austria) and fast handpiece with variation in air and water flow. The removal of acid etch was also simulated with the use of combined 3-in-1 air-water syringe. An optical particle sizer (OPS 3330, TSI Inc., Minnesota, USA) and a portable scanning mobility particle sizer (NanoScan SMPS Nanoparticle Sizer 3910, TSI Inc., Minnesota, USA) were both used to assess particulate matter ranging in dimension from 0.08 to 10 µm.Results Standard debonding procedure (involving air but no water) was associated with clear increase in the 'very small' and 'small' (0.26-0.9 µm) particles but only for a short period. Debonding procedures without supplementary air coolant appeared to produce similar levels of aerosol to standard debonding. Debonding in association with water tended to produce large increases in aerosol levels, producing particles of all sizes throughout the experiment. The use of water and a fast handpiece led to the most significant increase in particles. Combined use of the 3-in-1 air-water syringe did not result in any detectable increase in the aerosol levels.Conclusions Particulate matter was released during orthodontic debonding, although the concentration and volume was markedly less than that associated with the use of a fast handpiece. No increase in particulates was associated with prolonged use of a 3-in-1 air-water syringe. Particulate levels reduced to baseline levels over a short period (approximately five minutes). Further research within alternative, open environments and without air exchange systems is required.
