RESUMEN

The application of nano fertilizers is one of the hotspots in current agricultural production. In this study, nano silicon materials were mixed with compound fertilizers to make nano silicon fertilizer. The effects of different amounts of nano silicon application on the breaking-resistance strength, lodging-resistance index, lignin accumulation, lignin synthesis related enzymes, and the relative expression of lignin synthesis related genes in the second stem node of wheat were mainly studied. Four treatments were set up: CK (750 kg·ha-1 compound fertilizer), T1 (750 kg·ha-1 compound fertilizer + 0.9 kg·ha-1 nano silicon), T2 (750 kg·ha-1 compound fertilizer + 1.8 kg·ha-1 nano silicon), T3 (750 kg·ha-1 compound fertilizer + 2.7 kg·ha-1 nano silicon). The results of the two-year experiment showed that the breaking-resistance strength, lodging-resistance index, lignin accumulation in the second stem node of wheat treated with nano silicon fertilizer were higher than CK. In the first year of the experiment, the lignin accumulation of T2 was 130.73%, 5.14% and 7.25% higher than that of CK, T1 and T3 respectively at the maturity stage. In the second year of the experiment, the lignin accumulation of T2 was 20.33%, 11.19% and 9.89% higher than that of CK, T1 and T3 respectively at the maturity stage. And the activities of PAL, 4CL, CAD, and related gene expression levels were also higher than CK. And among them, T2 performed the best, indicating that the application of nano silicon fertilizer is beneficial for improving the lodging resistance of wheat stems and is of great significance for improving the quality of wheat.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the increasing number of genes associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, many patients currently still lack appropriate genetic diagnosis for this disease. Autosomal dominant mutations in aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARSs) have been implicated in CMT. Here, we describe causal missense mutations in the gene encoding seryl-tRNA synthetase 1 (SerRS) for 3 families affected with CMT. METHODS: Whole-exome sequencing was performed in 16 patients and 14 unaffected members of 3 unrelated families. The functional impact of the genetic variants identified was investigated using bioinformatic prediction tools and confirmed using cellular and biochemical assays. RESULTS: Combined linkage analysis for the 3 families revealed significant linkage (Zmax LOD = 6.9) between the genomic co-ordinates on chromosome 1: 108681600-110300504. Within the linkage region, heterozygous SerRS missense variants segregated with the clinical phenotype in the 3 families. The mutant SerRS proteins exhibited reduced aminoacylation activity and abnormal SerRS dimerization, which suggests the impairment of total protein synthesis and induction of eIF2α phosphorylation. INTERPRETATION: Our findings suggest the heterozygous SerRS variants identified represent a novel cause for autosomal dominant CMT. Mutant SerRS proteins are known to impact various molecular and cellular functions. Our findings provide significant advances on the current understanding of the molecular mechanisms associated with ARS-related CMT. ANN NEUROL 2023;93:244-256.

Lignin separation from natural lignocellulose for the preparation of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) is often challenging owing to the recalcitrant and complex structure of lignocellulose. This paper reports a strategy for the rapid synthesis of LNPs via microwave-assisted lignocellulose fractionation using ternary deep eutectic solvents (DESs). A novel ternary DES with strong hydrogen bonding was prepared using choline chloride, oxalic acid, and lactic acid in a 1:0.5:1 ratio. Efficient fractionation of rice straw (0.5 × 2.0 cm) (RS) was realized by the ternary DES under microwave irradiation (680 W) within only 4 min, and 63.4% of lignin could be separated from the RS to prepare LNPs with a high lignin purity (86.8%), an average particle size of 48-95 nm, and a narrow size distribution. The mechanism of lignin conversion was also investigated, which revealed that dissolved lignin aggregated into LNPs via π-π stacking interactions.

Enterovirus-A71 (EV-A71) has been associated with severe neurological forms of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). EV-A71 infects motor neurons at neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) to invade the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we investigate the role of peripherin (PRPH) during EV-A71 infection, a type III intermediate neurofilament involved in neurodegenerative conditions. In mice infected with EV-A71, PRPH co-localizes with viral particles in the muscles at NMJs and in the spinal cord. In motor neuron-like and neuroblastoma cell lines, surface-expressed PRPH facilitates viral entry, while intracellular PRPH influences viral genome replication through interactions with structural and non-structural viral components. Importantly, PRPH does not play a role during infection with coxsackievirus A16, another causative agent of HFMD rarely associated with neurological complications, suggesting that EV-A71 ability to exploit PRPH represents a unique attribute for successful CNS invasion. Finally, we show that EV-A71 also exploits some of the many PRPH-interacting partners. Of these, small GTP-binding protein Rac1 represents a potential druggable host target to limit neuroinvasion of EV-A71.

Periodontal tissues, including gingiva, cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone, play important roles in oral health. Under physiological conditions, periodontal tissues surround and support the teeth, maintaining the stability of the teeth and distributing the chewing forces. However, under pathological conditions, with the actions of various pathogenic factors, the periodontal tissues gradually undergo some irreversible changes, that is, gingival recession, periodontal ligament rupture, periodontal pocket formation, alveolar bone resorption, eventually leading to the loosening and even loss of the teeth. Currently, the regenerations of the periodontal tissues are still challenging. Therefore, it is necessary to study the development of the periodontal tissues, the principles and processes of which can be used to develop new strategies for the regeneration of periodontal tissues. This review summarizes the development of periodontal tissues and current strategies for periodontal healing and regeneration.

Mitochondria are involved in the regulation of apoptosis, making them a promising target for the development of new anticancer drugs. Doxorubicin (DOX), a chemotherapeutic drug, can induce reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated apoptosis, improving its anticancer effects. Herein, Rhein, an active ingredient in rhubarb, with the capability of self-assembly and mitochondrial targeting, was used in conjunction with DOX to form efficient nanomaterials (Rhein-DOX nanogel) capable of sustained drug release. It was self-assembled with a hydrogen bond, π-π stacking interactions, and hydrophobic interactions as the main driving force, and its loading efficiency was up to 100%. Based on its self-assembly characteristics, we evaluated the mechanism of this material to target mitochondria, induce ROS production, and promote apoptosis. The IC50 of the Rhein-DOX nanogel (3.74 µM) was only 46.3% of that of DOX (11.89 µM), and the tumor inhibition rate of the Rhein-DOX nanogel was 79.4% in vivo, 2.3 times that of DOX. This study not only addresses the disadvantages of high toxicity of DOX and low bioavailability of Rhein, when DOX and Rhein are combined for the treatment of hepatoma, but it also significantly improved the synergistic antihepatoma efficacy of Rhein and DOX, which provides a new idea for the development of long-term antihepatoma agents with low toxicity.

For further development and utilization of the germplasm resources of Puerariae Thomsonii Radix and Puerariae Lobatae Radix, this study developed the ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(UPLC-MS/MS) method, high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) method, and anthrone colorimetry to detect the content of 23 flavonoids, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, soluble sugar, and starch in Puerariae Thomsonii Radix and Puerariae Lobatae Radix. The content differences of various chemical components were analyzed. The methodological test of the established UPLC-MS/MS method for the determination of flavonoids showed that each component had satisfactory linearity within the corresponding linear range(R~2≥0.995), and the average spiked recoveries were 94.48%-105.5%. With this method, 17 flavonoids in Puerariae Lobatae Radix and Puerariae Thomsonii Radix were detected. Based on HPLC and anthrone colorimetry, the determination methods of lignocellulose, soluble sugar, and starch were established. According to the determination results, the content of cellulose in Puerariae Thomsonii Radix was significantly lower than that in Puerariae Lobatae Radix, and the content of starch was significantly higher than that in Puerariae Lobatae Radix. The content of hemicellulose, lignin, and soluble sugar showed no significant difference between the two medicinals, and the content of soluble sugar was in highly significantly negative correlation with that of starch. The established methods are simple, rapid, accurate, and sensitive. The results can lay a basis for the evaluation, and comprehensive development and utilization of the germplasm resources of Puerariae Thomsonii Radix and Puerariae Lobatae Radix.

Importance: Among all subtypes of breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer has a relatively high relapse rate and poor outcome after standard treatment. Effective strategies to reduce the risk of relapse and death are needed. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects of low-dose capecitabine maintenance after standard adjuvant chemotherapy in early-stage triple-negative breast cancer. Design, Setting, and Participants: Randomized clinical trial conducted at 13 academic centers and clinical sites in China from April 2010 to December 2016 and final date of follow-up was April 30, 2020. Patients (n = 443) had early-stage triple-negative breast cancer and had completed standard adjuvant chemotherapy. Interventions: Eligible patients were randomized 1:1 to receive capecitabine (n = 222) at a dose of 650 mg/m2 twice a day by mouth for 1 year without interruption or to observation (n = 221) after completion of standard adjuvant chemotherapy. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary end point was disease-free survival. Secondary end points included distant disease-free survival, overall survival, locoregional recurrence-free survival, and adverse events. Results: Among 443 women who were randomized, 434 were included in the full analysis set (mean [SD] age, 46 [9.9] years; T1/T2 stage, 93.1%; node-negative, 61.8%) (98.0% completed the trial). After a median follow-up of 61 months (interquartile range, 44-82), 94 events were observed, including 38 events (37 recurrences and 32 deaths) in the capecitabine group and 56 events (56 recurrences and 40 deaths) in the observation group. The estimated 5-year disease-free survival was 82.8% in the capecitabine group and 73.0% in the observation group (hazard ratio [HR] for risk of recurrence or death, 0.64 [95% CI, 0.42-0.95]; P = .03). In the capecitabine group vs the observation group, the estimated 5-year distant disease-free survival was 85.8% vs 75.8% (HR for risk of distant metastasis or death, 0.60 [95% CI, 0.38-0.92]; P = .02), the estimated 5-year overall survival was 85.5% vs 81.3% (HR for risk of death, 0.75 [95% CI, 0.47-1.19]; P = .22), and the estimated 5-year locoregional recurrence-free survival was 85.0% vs 80.8% (HR for risk of locoregional recurrence or death, 0.72 [95% CI, 0.46-1.13]; P = .15). The most common capecitabine-related adverse event was hand-foot syndrome (45.2%), with 7.7% of patients experiencing a grade 3 event. Conclusions and Relevance: Among women with early-stage triple-negative breast cancer who received standard adjuvant treatment, low-dose capecitabine maintenance therapy for 1 year, compared with observation, resulted in significantly improved 5-year disease-free survival. In this work, acid and matrix-tolerant multifunctionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with an integrated chiral selector towards tyrosine (Tyr) and polyethylenglycol (PEG) chains were developed for visual chiral discrimination of Tyr in biological samples under acid conditions. In brief, AuNPs multifunctionalized with N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NALC) and PEG (PEG/NALC-AuNPs) were prepared via a simple strategy. In the presence of l-Tyr, the color of PEG/NALC-AuNP solution changed from red to gray, while no obvious color change was observed with the introduction of d-Tyr, which indicated that the introduction of PEG onto the surface of AuNPs has no effect on the chiral recognition between l-Tyr and NALC. A computer-aided molecular model was used to clarify the chiral recognition mechanism between NALC and Tyr enantiomers and to further guide the optimization of sensitivity. The resultant PEG/NALC-AuNP sensor presented a significantly improved stability under acid and alkali conditions compared with conventional NALC-AuNPs, resulting in a wider dynamic range (500 nM-100 µM) and a 50 times reduced detection limit by simply adjusting the pH of the sensor system under acid conditions (pH 2-2.5). More importantly, the PEG/NALC-AuNPs can realize the visual chiral discrimination of Tyr enantiomers in biological samples due to their significantly improved long-term stability and reduced interaction towards non-target species.

Inefficient diabetic ulcer healing and scar formation remain a challenge worldwide, owing to a series of disordered and dynamic biological events that occur during the process of healing. A functional wound dressing that is capable of promoting ordered diabetic wound recovery is eagerly anticipated. In this study, we designed a silicone elastomer with embedded 20(S)-protopanaxadiol-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (PPD-NS) to achieve ordered recovery in scarless diabetic ulcer healing. The nanostructured lipid carriers were prepared through an emulsion evaporation-solidification method and then incorporated into a network of silicone elastomer to form a unique nanostructured lipid carrier-enriched gel formulation. Interestingly, the PPD-NS showed excellent in vitro anti-inflammatory and proangiogenic activity. Moreover, in diabetic mice with full-thickness skin excision wound, treatment with PPD-NS significantly promoted in vivo scarless wound healing through suppressing inflammatory infiltration in the inflammatory phase, promoting angiogenesis during the proliferation phase, and regulating collagen deposition in the remodeling phase. Hence, this study demonstrates that the developed PPD-NS could facilitate ordered diabetic wound recovery via multifunctional improvement during different wound-healing phases. This novel approach could be promising for scarless diabetic wound healing.

This study aimed to evaluate intraoral anastomosis of a deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) flap in combination with computer-assisted techniques for mandibular reconstruction. Between December 2015 and March 2018, 4 patients with mandibular discontinuity defects caused by ablative tumor surgery were included in the study. Mandibular reconstruction was performed with a DCIA flap using computer-assisted and intraoral anastomosis techniques. A computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing cutting guide, a reconstruction stereomodel, and a prebent reconstruction plate were used for mandibular reconstruction in each patient. Anastomosis was performed on the facial artery and vein using the deep circumflex iliac vessels through an intraoral approach. The resulting error-grade color map was used to evaluate repeatability between the preoperative design and postoperative results. Mandibular reconstruction with a DCIA flap using computer-assisted and intraoral anastomosis techniques was successful in all 4 patients. All flaps survived with no severe complications. Satisfactory cosmetic outcomes and occlusion with sufficient bone height for implants were achieved postoperatively. Repeatability between the virtual plan and postoperative result was 81.1% ± 8.2% within 1 mm, 85.8% ± 8.1% within 2 mm, and 89.6% ± 6.7% within 3 mm. The use of intraoral anastomosis and computer-assisted techniques with DCIA flaps for mandibular reconstruction without additional facial scarring is feasible and advantageous. However, the findings should be interpreted cautiously owing to the relatively short follow-up time and limited number of patients involved in this study.

Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is the primary etiological agent of dental caries. The S. mutans enzyme sortase A (SrtA) is responsible for anchoring bacterial cell wall surface proteins involved in host cell attachment and biofilm formation. Thus, SrtA is an attractive target for inhibiting dental caries caused by S. mutans-associated acid fermentation. In this study, we observed that astilbin, a flavanone compound extracted from Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae, has potent inhibitory activity against the S. mutans SrtA, with an IC50 of 7.5 µg/mL. In addition, astilbin was proven to reduce the formation of biofilm while without affecting the growth of S. mutans. The results of a molecular dynamics simulation and a mutation analysis revealed that the Arg213, Leu111, and Leu116 of SrtA are important for the interaction between SrtA and astilbin. The results of this study demonstrate the potential of using astilbin as a nonbactericidal agent to modulate pathogenicity of S. mutans by inhibiting the activity of SrtA.

Gastric cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-associated death worldwide. Although a decrease in its incidence is observed, gastric cancer still poses a major clinical challenge due to poor prognosis and limited treatments. Barbaloin (BBL) is a main medicinal composition of the Chinese traditional medicine aloe vera. BBL has various bioactivities, including anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. Polydopamine (pD)-based surface modification is easy to functionalize polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) surfaces with ligands and/or additional polymeric layers. In the present study, BBL-loaded formulations was developed with pD-modified NPs, which was synthesized by polylactide-TPGS (PLA-TPGS) (pD-PLA-TPGS/NPs). And galactosamine (Gal) was conjugated on the prepared NPs (Gal-pD-PLA-TPGS/NPs) for targeting the gastric cancer cells. Here, we found that BBL-loaded Gal-pD-PLA-TPGS/NPs showed the highest cellular uptake efficacy in gastric cancer cells. Gal-pD-PLA-TPGS/NPs more significantly reduced the gastric cancer cell viability. Further, greater apoptosis, autophagy and ROS generation was induced by Gal-pD-PLA-TPGS/NPs in gastric cancer cells. Additionally, compared to the other two NPs, Gal-pD-PLA-TPGS/NPs most markedly decreased ATP levels in gastric cancer cells. In vivo, Gal-pD-PLA-TPGS/NPs were specifically targeted to tumor site. Moreover, Gal-pD-PLA-TPGS/NPs exhibited the most anti-tumor effects, as evidenced by the lowest tumor volume and tumor weight. Of note, there was no significant difference was observed in body and liver weight, as well as the histological changes in major organs isolated from each group of mice. Together, the findings indicated that BBL-loaded Gal-pD-PLA-TPGS/NPs could be targeted to gastric cancer cells to suppress tumor progression without toxicity.

The objective of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effects of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) bark essential oil (CBEO) and its principal constituent cinnamaldehyde against Porphyromonas gingivalis and to elucidate the antibacterial mechanism. GC-MS analysis showed that cinnamaldehyde was the major constituent in CBEO (57.97%). The minimum inhibition concentrations (MICs) of CBEO and cinnamaldehyde were 6.25 µg/mL and 2.5 µM for P. gingivalis, respectively. Nucleic acid and protein leakage was observed with increasing concentrations of CBEO and cinnamaldehyde. Additionally, propidium iodide uptake assays revealed CBEO and cinnamaldehyde at 1 × MIC impaired P. gingivalis membrane integrity by enhancing cell permeability. Morphological changes in P. gingivalis cells were observed by scanning electron microscopy, which indicated cell membrane destruction. To further determine the anti-biofilm effect, relative biofilm formation and established biofilms were examined, which demonstrated that both CBEO and cinnamaldehyde at sub-MIC levels inhibited P. gingivalis biofilm formation by 74.5% and 67.3% separately, but only CBEO slightly decreased established biofilms by 33.5% at 4 × MIC. These results suggest the potential of CBEO as a natural antimicrobial agent against periodontal disease. Furthermore, cinnamaldehyde was confirmed to be the antibacterial substance of CBEO with inhibitory action against P. gingivalis.

BACKGROUND: Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is most frequently caused by Enterovirus71 (EV-A71) or Coxsackie virus A16 (CV-A16), infants and young children are at greatest risk. Describing the epidemiology of HFMD can help develop and better target interventions, including the use of pediatric EV-A71 vaccination. METHODS: We obtained data from the national surveillance system for HFMD cases with onset dates from 2009 to 2015. We defined probable cases as patient with skin papular or vesicular rashes on the hands, feet, mouth, or buttocks and confirmed cases as patients with the above symptoms along with laboratory-based enterovirus detection. We generated overall and age-specific annual incidence rates and described the temporal variability and seasonality of HFMD in Qinghai Province. We identified spatial clustering of HFMD incidence at the county level using the Local Indicator of Spatial Associationand an alpha level of 0.05. RESULTS: During the study period, 14,480 HFMD probable or confirmed cases were reported in Qinghai Province. Of the 2158 (14.9%) with laboratory confirmation, 924 (42.6%) were caused by CV-A16 and 830 (38.2%) were caused by EV-A71. The majority (89%) of all case-patients were ≤ 5 years of age and male (61.5%). The overall mean annual HFMD incidence rate was 36.4 cases per 100,000 populations, while the incidence rate for children ≤5 years of age was 379.5 cases per 100,000. Case reports peaked during the months of May through July. HFMD was predominantly caused by EV-A71, except in 2010 and 2014 when CV-A16 was the predominant causative agent. High incidence rates of HFMD were clustered (Moran's I = 0.59, P < 0.05) in the eastern region of the province. CONCLUSION: HFMD remains an important cause of childhood disease in Qinghai Province, occurring in an acyclical pattern of increased incidence, primarily due to CV-A16 circulation every three years. Incidence is also seasonal and tends to spatially cluster in the eastern region of the province. Since approximately 40% of confirmed HFMD cases were due to EV-A71, EV-A71 vaccination is likely to have a positive impact on the HFMD disease burden. Routine analysis of local surveillance data is crucial for describing disease occurrence and changes in etiology.

Boronate-affinity based molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are beset by the unsatisfied adsorption capacity and narrow working pH ranges. A magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer containing phenylboronic acid groups was placed on the surface of Fe3O4 (magnetite) microspheres coated with porous TiO2 (Fe3O4@pTiO2@MIP). In contrast to its silica analog (Fe3O4@SiO2@MIP), the flowerlike Fe3O4@pTiO2 offers more binding sites for templates. Thus, the adsorption capacity of the Fe3O4@pTiO2@MIP is strongly enhanced. The strong electron-withdrawing effects of Ti(IV) enable the boronic acid of the MIP to have better affinity for glycoproteins at a wide pH range from 6.0 to 9.0. Consequently, the Fe3O4@pTiO2@MIP exhibits higher adsorption for glycoproteins than Fe3O4@SiO2@MIP in both basic and acidic medium. The Fe3O4@pTiO2@MIPs were eluted with 5% acetic acid aqueous solution containing 30% acetonitrile, and the eluate was analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. The method was applied to the selective extraction and quantitation of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in spiked fetal bovine serum (FBS). The linear range is 0.40-10 µg·mL-1 with the limit of detection of 0.31 µg·mL-1. In our perception, this work has a wide scope in that is paves the way to a more widespread application of boronate affinity based MIPs for analysis of glycoproteins and related glyco compounds even at moderately acidic pH values. Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) play an important role in nitrification in estuaries. The aim of this study was to examine the spatial abundance, diversity, and activity of AOB in coastal sediments of the Liaohe Estuary using quantitative PCR, high-throughput sequencing of the amoA gene coding the ammonia monooxygenase enzyme active subunit, and sediment slurry incubation experiments. AOB abundance ranged from 8.54 × 104 to 5.85 × 106 copies g-1 of wet sediment weight and exhibited an increasing trend from the Liaohe Estuary to the open coastal zone. Potential nitrification rates (PNRs) ranged from 0.1 to 336.8 nmol N g-1 day-1 along the estuary to the coastal zone. Log AOB abundance and PNRs were significantly positively correlated. AOB richness decreased from the estuary to the coastal zone. High-throughput sequencing analysis indicated that the majority of amoA gene sequences fell within the Nitrosomonas and Nitrosomonas-like clade, and only a few sequences were clustered within the Nitrosospira clade. This finding indicates that the Nitrosomonas-related lineage may be more adaptable to the specific conditions in this estuary than the Nitrosospira lineage. Sites with high nitrification rates were located in the southern open region and were dominated by the Nitrosomonas-like lineage, whereas the Nitrosospira lineage was found primarily in the northern estuary mouth sites with low nitrification rates. Thus, nitrification potentials in Liaohe estuarine sediments in the southern open region were greater than those in the northern estuary mouth, and the Nitrosomonas-related lineage might play a more important role than the Nitrosospira lineage in nitrification in this estuary.

Origami is a topic of rapidly growing interest in both the scientific and engineering research communities due to its promising potential in a broad range of applications. Previous assembly approaches of origami structures at the micro/nanoscale are constrained by the applicable classes of materials, topologies and/or capability of control over the transformation. Here, we introduce an approach that exploits controlled mechanical buckling for autonomic origami assembly of 3D structures across material classes from soft polymers to brittle inorganic semiconductors, and length scales from nanometers to centimeters. This approach relies on a spatial variation of thickness in the initial 2D structures as an effective strategy to produce engineered folding creases during the compressive buckling process. The elastic nature of the assembly scheme enables active, deterministic control over intermediate states in the 2D to 3D transformation in a continuous and reversible manner. Demonstrations include a broad set of 3D structures formed through unidirectional, bidirectional, and even hierarchical folding, with examples ranging from half cylindrical columns and fish scales, to cubic boxes, pyramids, starfish, paper fans, skew tooth structures, and to amusing system-level examples of soccer balls, model houses, cars, and multi-floor textured buildings.

Urchin-like amorphous Ni2B alloys were successfully prepared for the first time from a mixture of Ni(NH3)6(2+) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) via a solution plasma process (SPP). The as-synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), selected-area electron diffraction patterns (SAED) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. In the performance test, the obtained Ni-B urchins showed great antibacterial activities, comparable with those of amikacin and kanamycin, especially towards Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). Meanwhile, the magnetic properties of Ni-B urchins are enhanced in comparison with those of conventional Ni-B. During hydrous hydrazine (N2H4) decomposition, the dehydrogenation performance of Ni-B urchins is superior to those of Raney Ni and conventional Ni-B. The enhanced catalytic performance of Ni-B urchins is attributed to their high surface area of active species nickel and the enhanced intrinsic activity resulting from their unique structure.
